Mastrojanni Winery, known for its superb Brunello wines, was established in 1975 on the ruins of a half-abandoned small village in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, at the extreme southeast of Montalcino, near Siena, Italy. Mastrojanni Farm includes 90 hectares of land, 25 of which are cultivated as vineyards, 14 solely for Brunello. In 1992, Andrea Marchetti was appointed director and Maurizio Castelli was named oenologist of the winery. Together, they have improved the wine, which is now of the highest quality and appreciated around the world. In 2008, the Farm joined Gruppo illy, led by Chairman Riccardo Illy, which has helped to guarantee the vineyards’ continuity and a philosophy focused on tradition and quality. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and owners who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers. R. Illy at Mastrojanni

Wlm Board of Trustees On behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff, and people we serve, welcome to the Berkshire Museum’s ninth biennial Wine Gala and Auction. This year’s event coincides with our 110th Anniversary and we are thrilled you are here to help us celebrate. For more than a century, Berkshire Museum has been THE place where people come together to make inspiring connections among art, history, and natural science. In our galleries now is Objectify: A Look Into the Permanent Collection, featuring a fascinating array of art, artifacts, and natural specimens illustrating the Museum’s origins and evolution, leading to the question, “What will the next 110 years look like?”
William M. Hines, Jr.
For eleven decades, the Berkshire Museum has transformed the lives of children—−perhaps its greatest legacy—−and tonight’s proceeds benefit our education programs for local students. Last year we provided more than 16,000 student experiences through curriculum-based classes and tours at the Museum and outreach programs within schools. Thanks to our supporters, the Museum is now known for leadership in fostering 21st century learning skills including the four C’s —−Critical thinking and problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity and innovation. We continue to expand our capacity and are currently developing new technology-based tools for interactive wireless learning networks for students and the public, within the Museum and outside its walls.
Michael Addy
We are grateful to our Wine Gala and Auction volunteer chairs, Wendy and Peter Gordon, and honorary chairs Mike Chefetz and Nancy Edman Feldman—− and their dedicated volunteer committee members who designed this evening to be memorable and fun. Special thanks to Heidi and Jim Nejaime and Courtney and Mike Addy, chairs of the Wine Committee, for their invaluable expertise and hard work. We are also grateful to our special guest, Riccardo Illy, and auctioneer Marie Keep of Skinner Wine Auctions for helping to make this evening such a success.
Charles Kittredge
Finally, we thank YOU, the many individuals and businesses who made tonight possible—−Enjoy!

It is a great privilege to serve as Chairs of the 2013 Berkshire Museum Wine Gala and Auction. Tonight’s event is a testament to the Berkshire Museum’s 110-year legacy. Wine tastings and hors d’ouevres will be served in the Museum’s historic Crane Room and throughout the new permanent collection exhibition, Objectify. As you catch up with friends and bid on auction items, you will be surrounded by the artifacts that make the Berkshire Museum the treasure that it is —−a place where art, history, and natural science come together like nowhere else in the Berkshires (and perhaps the world)! We are extremely proud to have Nancy Edman Feldman and Mike Chefetz serve as Honorary Chairs this year. In past years, they have served as Chairs of this event and it is a treat to be able to recognize them in this way. They are true advocates and supporters of the Museum and their enthusiasm for this event is never-ending. Tremendous thanks to both of them. Our Gala Committee members have all done a superb job. Each has contributed in some important way, and we sincerely thank all of them for their hard work. The evening would not have this caliber of wine lots if not for the continued dedication and determination of Jim Nejaime and Mike Addy. Warm Salute! to them both. And the room décor and tablescapes are so incredibly beautiful thanks to the extraordinary style and design of Renee Erenburg. Suzanne Nash’s assistance in enlisting the generosity of our local restaurants for hors d’oeuvres donations was exemplary. We also appreciate the hard work and dedication of all the Berkshire Museum staff members who contributed to the success of this event. We want to personally thank our Guest of Honor, Riccardo Illy, from Mastrojanni, a wine estate located in the celebrated region of Montalcino in southern Tuscany, for providing us with spectacular wines for the Gala dinner, as well as two wonderful auction lots. In addition, our very special thanks go to our auctioneer Marie Keep, from Skinner Wine Auctions —−we look forward to a spirited and successful live auction. In the end, it is you, our Wine Gala guests, for whom we save the most heartfelt thanks. You buy the tickets and bid on the auction lots —−and through your attendance, all of you are supporting vital education programs at the Museum. Bid often, bid high, and bid over your limit! Most of all, enjoy the evening and help us make this Gala a successful and fun evening for all.

The Berkshire Museum Board of Trustees and Staff acknowledge with affection and gratitude the extraordinary support, guidance, commitment, and motivating spirit of Honorary Chairs Mike Chefetz and Nancy Edman Feldman. Mike has been chairman and a champion of the Wine Gala since the event was first held in 1993. Over the years, he has secured auction lots, helped write and edit the catalog, and promoted participation in the events within the community of the Berkshires’ wine collectors and enthusiasts. Along the way, he has been a constant inspiration for the many volunteers and staff members who have worked with him. His dedication is unparalleled. The Berkshire Museum Wine Gala and Auction would not be what it is without Mike Chefetz. Nancy has been a member of the Wine Gala committee since 2009. Her sense of style and design has helped to make the Gala not only elegant but fun as well. As with Mike, Nancy has always kept the Berkshire Museum’s important role in the community in the forefront of her efforts to make the Wine Gala a fundraising success. Nancy has recently joined the Berkshire Museum Board of Trustees, an additional testament to her commitment to supporting the Museum’s good work. Heartfelt appreciation, Mike and Nancy!

Guest of Honor Riccardo Illy Chairman Gruppo illy S.p.A. and Vice Chairman illycaffè s.p.a Born in 1955 in Trieste, Italy, Riccardo Illy is the current Chairman of Gruppo illy S.p.A. and Vice Chairman of illycaffè s.p.a. Over the years, he has held many additional roles in and out of the family business. Riccardo joined the family firm in 1977 and dedicated himself to the re-organization of the commercial structure. In his position as Sales Director of Italy, he developed all Marketing and Public Relations activities and produced the firm’s first important advertising campaigns that went on to receive international recognition. He was named Chairman of Gruppo illy in 2004 and has held the position since. Under Riccardo, Gruppo illy has taken on a number of high-quality foodstuff brands such as Domori (chocolate), Dammann Frères (tea), Agrimontana (fruit preserves, jams and confectionaries) and most recently, Mastrojanni, a wine estate located in the celebrated region of Montalcino in southern Tuscany. With the addition of Mastrojanni, Riccardo and the Illy family realized one of their dreams: to own a top-quality wine producer in their native Italy. Riccardo Illy is also a journalist and author of Dal Caffè all’Espresso, a book published by Mondadori; in 2006 he wrote La Rana Cinese (“The Chinese Frog”) and in 2008, Così Perdiamo il Nord (“So We Lose the North”). From 1993 until 2001 he was the mayor of Trieste, and in 2001 Riccardo was elected a member of the Italian Parliament. Riccardo Illy resides in Trieste where he is married with one daughter and holds an honors degree in Political Science from the University of Trieste.
Marie Keep is the founder and Director of the Fine Wines department at Skinner. In spearheading this strategic business effort, Marie was instrumental in establishing Skinner as the only major auction house in New England to offer fines wines at auction. Her personal knowledge and passionate appreciation for the finest producers and vintages have quickly made Skinner a viable venue for the consignment and purchase of fine wines. Actively involved in Boston’s growing food and wine community, and a long time wine connoisseur, Marie launched Skinner’s Fine Wines Department at the close of 2006. She also established Skinner’s collaboration with its retail partner, Lower Falls Wine Company, a third generation wine seller based just west of Boston. Marie also plays a key role operationally at Skinner as Managing Director of its two galleries. In this capacity she manages day-to-day operations at Skinner, oversees 60 auctions and events annually, and manages over a dozen staff members. Marie joined Skinner in 1998.

Bddng Pocdur When you arrive at the Museum, go directly to register or confirm registration and receive a bidder paddle for use during the auction. The number of this paddle will be used for both the Silent and Live Auctions. You cannot bid without a bidding number. Silent Auction Bidding for all Silent Auction lots opens on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 5:00 p.m., and closes at 6:30 p.m. Silent auction lots are displayed in the Ellen Crane Memorial Room. The bid amount must exceed the previous entry by at least $10. The final digit of each bid must be either ‘5’ or ‘0’ in whole dollar increments. At the close of the Silent Auction at 6:30 p.m., the clipboards and bidding sheets for all lots will be collected by Wine Auction staff and volunteers. The highest bidder for each lot will be considered to have purchased that lot. Live Auction The Live Auction will be held in the Berkshire Museum’s theater beginning at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Marie Keep of Skinner Wine Auctions will conduct this auction. this evening's event supports
Berkshire Museum’s WeeMuse Initiative For many families, “Back to School” is an exciting time of year, with new shoes, a favorite lunchbox, and a happy sense of anticipation; and beginning Kindergarten is an especially important milestone. Children who enter Kindergarten prepared to learn and thrive, equipped with a growing vocabulary and social skills, will be much more successful throughout their school years. Sadly, many youngsters from at-risk families begin their education at a disadvantage, with limited language skills and health or emotional problems that hinder learning. Berkshire Museum has an exceptional educational program in place, providing more than 16,000 educational experiences for students and teachers each year. Now the Museum will be using its extensive resources and depth of experience to assist early learners through
WeeMuse, the newest educational venture at the Berkshire Museum. Developed in collaboration with key community partners, WeeMuse serves low-income pre-school children and their families in Berkshire County.
WeeMuse places a strong emphasis on literacy skills. The first event, a Museum-wide Pajama Night held in November, was a huge success, with community leaders and educators acting as storytellers and readers for the more than 400 children and parents who attended, free of charge. And everyone went home with free books. In addition to core WeeMuse projects such as a year-round early childhood curriculum, professional development workshops for teachers, and publication of the book Welcome to Kindergarten, four more community outreach events are planned for the upcoming months as part of the WeeMuse program. • • • •

Aromas of black licorice, coffee, and currant follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a long, flavorful finish.” (Wine Spectator) • 2005 Château Les Grands Chênes Médoc (3.0L Double Magnum) This superb 25-acre Medoc estate (owned by Bordeaux visionary Bernard Magrez, owner of Chateau Pape Clement) produces a blend of 60 percent Merlot and 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005 reveals aromas of chocolate, cassis, smoke, herbs, and meat, followed by a full-bodied, well-endowed, impressively constituted wine with sweet tannin as well as loads of character and personality. Enjoy it over the next 10 to 12 years. (91 points, Robert Parker)

Donated by Denis and Susan Toner Value: $2,500+
9. Instant Cellar: Vintage of the Century! Thirty years ago, 1982 gained recognition, thanks largely to Robert Parker, as a spectacular vintage for Bordeaux, perhaps even rivaling the previous greats of the 20th century: 1961, 1945, and 1929. Prices skyrocketed, and the wines lived up to their early billing. “I believe unequivocally that these are the most exhilarating wines of this generation,” Parker wrote in 1986, commenting on the tremendous fruit and depth that guaranteed not just excellence but long life as well. The top wines remain paragons of classic Bordeaux, but with each passing year they’re more difficult to find. Until tonight! This lot boasts two full cases of top-shelf mature Bordeaux: 16 bottles from the 1982 vintage, and 8 from 1978, another excellent and long-lived vintage. Don’t miss this rare chance to own this magnificent collection. Some of the highlights in this lot include: • 1982 Ch. Lynch-Bages, Pauillac, 3 bottles “savory, rich, complex, beautiful …. ” • 1982 Ch. Langoa Barton, St. Julien, 6 bottles “gorgeous nose … dense, full-bodied, expansively flavored wine …. ” • 1982 Ch. Montrose, St. Estèphe, 1 bottle “round, sweet entry, medium to full body … thick juicy finish …. ” • 1982 Ch. Villemaurine, St. Emilion, 2 bottles “gorgeous and voluptuous …. ” • 1982 Ch. Beychevelle, St. Julien, 1 bottle “Dense, thick, rich, concentrated, and impressive.” • 1982 Ch. La Tour Carnet, Haut- Médoc, 2 bottles • 1982 Ch. Les Ormes de Pez, St. Estèphe, 1 bottle • 1978 Ch. Montrose, St. Estèphe, 3 bottles • 1978 Ch. Fourcas Hosten, Listrac Médoc, 5 bottles Total of 24 bottles in 2 wooden Bordeaux cases.

Berkshire Museum depends on the generosity of people like you to provide more than 16,000 educational experiences every year to area students. 101. Luscious Sauternes
103. Grand Cru Chablis at its Best
Acclaimed “An Extraordinary Wine of Profound & Complex Character … ” and rated 96 points by both Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and the Wine Spectator, this six-bottle case of 2005 Château Rieussec Sauternes will provide the showpiece for many pleasurable evenings. “Full-bodied, very sweet and unctuous, with honey and caramel flavors. Long and rich, oozing with sweet, ripe fruit, this is like liquid candy!” (Wine Spectator)
Grand Cru Chablis is a special joy, with its brilliant color, wonderful aroma, and unique combination of elegance and flintiness. Savor this six-bottle wood case of 2000 Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis Grand Cru “Les Clos.” Owned by the historic Burgundy firm of Maison Albert Bichot since 1968, Domaine Long-Depaquit is one of the appellation’s most important estates, including 10 percent of all Chablis Grand Cru vineyards. Grapes are grown according to environmentally friendly practices, and restricted yields ensure the quality of the wine.

102. Great Bordeaux with an American Connection Château Haut-Bailly, one of the most prestigious Cru Classé de Graves, has a Berkshire connection—−our Stockbridge neighbor and Berkshire Museum supporter, Robert Wilmers. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded high praise: “One cannot say enough about the investments and commitment to quality instituted by Haut-Bailly’s new American owner, Robert Wilmers.” Six bottle equivalent—−four 750ml bottles and one magnum: • 2003 Château Haut-Bailly (90 points, WA) “Powerful, fruit-driven, and big … boasting beautiful purity, medium to full body … it is an elegant, classic Bordeaux.” • 2000 Château Haut-Bailly (92 points, WS) “Wonderful finesse and length to this wine. One of the few Pessacs better in 2000 than 1998.” • 1998 Château Haut-Bailly (94 points, WS) “Full-bodied, with superclassy tannins that are polished and very refined.” • 1995 Château Haut-Bailly (92 points, WS) “A chewy, burly wine for aging .… Full-bodied and tough, with masses of tannins and a long, wet earth and fruit aftertaste.” • Magnum - 1999 Château Haut-Bailly (87-89 points, WA) “Haut-Bailly has again produced a lush, sweet, graceful wine with smoky oak gently integrated with ripe cherry fruit, caramel, and earth.”

104. Grand Cru Bargain for a Burgundy-Lover Any Echezeaux Grand Cru is a plum of a red Burgundy to have and this four bottle lot of 2004 Bruno Desaunay – Bissey Grand Cru Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes is also a great value.

105. St. Émilion Triple Be surprised by this three-bottle lot of 2000 Château du Cauze St. Émilion. “The deep ruby/purple-colored 2000 is an elegant, delicious, sexy, open-knit effort displaying abundant quantities of currant and black cherry fruit, moderate tannin, and an excellent finish. Unlike most vintages of Du Cauze, it will require one to three years of cellaring; it will keep for 15 years. It is a sleeper of the vintage.” (88-89 points, Robert Parker)

106. 2005 Château Fombrauge Grand Cru St. Émilion
108. The Finest Food Wine I
Two bottle lot.
“Best” is of course a subjective descriptor when it comes to wine: you like Syrah, I’ll take Grenache, and so on. But many in the know wouldn’t argue that Reisling is the world’s single best wine to pair with food. Its combination of acidity and fruit creates a marvelous harmony with just about any comestible. Here, one case (12 bottles) from Reisling’s motherland, Germany, of 2010 Selbach Piesporter Michelsberg Riesling Kabinett. According to Robert Parker, “Johannes Selbach, this estate’s winemaker and director, is on fire. His wines are top flight and yet his winemaking appears to be improving with each vintage.” Perfect for this summer’s picnics, brunches, or just to sip on a beautiful evening.

107. Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve
109. The Finest Food Wine II
“Dark in color, with intense aromas of dried mushroom and very ripe fruit. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of ripe fruit. Turns meaty and raisiny. A very mature style, but one that I like a lot. This is always a wonderful value.” (91 points, Wine Spectator—−JS) “This chewy, powerful, decadent St. Émilion is a modernstyled, impressively endowed, pure, intense wine. It is another brilliant example of winemaking from proprietor Bernard Magrez. Anticipated maturity: 2010 – 2020+.” (90 points, Robert Parker)
Charles Heidsieck produces one of the most highly rated champagnes in the market and this six-bottle case of Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve non-vintage will set the mood for many special evenings. Wine Spectator awarded 93 points, and Bettane et Desseauve raved: “This House offers champagnes of an exquisite finesse and of a perfect maturity … The House is at its peak.” The World of Fine Wines tasters were unequivocal: “There is no doubt that Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve stood out above the rest of the champagnes in the tasting … This NV champagne has been in a class of its own since 1997.”

110. Beautiful Barolo
113. Sonoma Large Format
Don’t miss this stunning Barolo from one of the stars of Italy’s Piedmont: Roberto Voerzio’s 2004 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Torriglione. “Very perfumed, with intense aromas of plum and blackberry. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, silky-textured finish. There’s lovely finesse and balance. Very refined for Voerzio. Best after 2011. Only a total of 515 cases made.” (93 points, Wine Spectator)
Since 1985, Ferrari-Carano has been a leading producer of world-class, nationally acclaimed wines. Located in California’s Dry Creek Valley, the winery also boasts one of Sonoma County’s most beautiful gardena and a magnificent villa. 114. 2005 Penfolds Shiraz South Australia “St. Henri” A Wine Spectator top 100 Wine in 2009: “Aromatic, complex and silky, slipping in its gorgeous blackberry, currant and plum fruit against a seething background of toast, spice, mineral, and loamy earth. The texture is seamless, and the fl avors just take off, sailing through the long, expressive finish. Best to enjoy from 2011 through 2020.” (95 points)

115. MAGnificent Merlot The film Sideways gives Merlot an undeservedly bad rap; as wine lovers know, many of the world’s great reds are built on this classic grape (think St. Émilion and Pomerol for starters). Here’s a full six-bottle case of 2007 Pepperbridge Merlot from Washington State in magnums—−one of just 30 such cases produced. A 91-point Robert Parker rating barely hints at the pleasures delivered by this lush, velvety, and balanced wine.

119. 1994 Fonseca Vintage Port – 100 Point Superstar!
Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy this sixbottle case of the limited production 2009 Dunn Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet from legendary winemaker Randy Dunn. The Wine Advocate gives it 92 points and notes, “A dark, juicy wine, the 2009 is surprisingly open for a young Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon.” Anticipated maturity is 2014–2029.
Wine Spectator: 100 points!!!! “Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it’s probably even better than that classic vintage—−more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit fl avor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, fullbodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it’s a long-term, great Port.”

117. American Pinot: In the Bottle and in Person Enjoy a VIP tour of Beaux Frères Vineyard and Winery, in Newberg, Oregon, whose philosophy since its first vintage in 1991 has been “to produce a world-class Pinot Noir from small, well-balanced yields and ripe, healthy fruit that represents the essence of our vineyard.” Add to your visit a wonderful four-bottle lineup of small production Pinot Noir that showcases the brilliance of this classic grape when grown in different vineyards and touched by four gifted winemakers. Each comes with a reputation and pedigree among the finest expressions of Pinot Noir in the United States. One bottle each: • 2010 Beaux Frères, Beaux Frères Vineyard Pinot Noir • 2010 Cristom, Eileen Vineyard Pinot Noir • 2010 Capiaux, Chimera Pinot Noir • 2010 Walter Hansel, Estate Pinot Noir

118. Double Magnum Bogle Phantom Proprietary Red Blend “Bogle Vineyards’ top red—−a beautiful blend of Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Mourvèdre. California meets Provence. Great red to match for a group summer BBQ! Flavors of deep, ripe wild berry and raspberry, with spicy fl oral edge … with a complex, long, dry finish.”
Robert Parker: “One of the most spectacular 1994s, this opaque purple-colored wine is an exotic, f lamboyant, ostentatious port. This wine will drink fabulously well at age 10, but keep for up to 30 years.” (97 points)
Donated by Anonymous Value: $225
120. Magnum Porto It’s difficult to match the pleasure of ending a great meal with a glass (or two) of rich, full-bodied vintage Port, perhaps, if you’re lucky, with the perfect pairing of Stilton and a few walnuts. For a magical end to your next dinner party consider this 1.5 liter magnum of 1994 Cockburn Vintage Port, of which Robert Parker writes, “An attractive, smoky, tarry, roasted black fruit character dominates this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine’s aromatic profile. Low acidity, sweet, rich fruit, and a forward, expansive feel suggest this full-bodied wine will mature quickly, but it will last for at least two decades … 91 points.”
