Welcome

For more than a century, the Berkshire Museum has been the region’s premier museum of science, history, and the arts. We are, in effect, the Smithsonian for the Berkshires and like the Smithsonian, transforming lives through education has always been the heart of our programming. In the last two decades, the Museum’s Wine Gala and Auction has become an important financial pillar in building capacity to serve our under-resourced schools. Thanks to you and other investors, we have been able to meet the steadily increasing demand for our programs. As we close this fiscal year,

we are proud to relay that our educators have delivered more than 26,000 experiences to local students at the Museum and in schools. This represents an astonishing 43 percent increase since our last Wine Gala and Auction in 2015. Beyond the numbers

is the fact that for many of these students, it is the first time that they have explored the dynamic intersection of science, history, and the arts embedded in the Museum’s interdisciplinary experiences. You will find more about our outstanding education programs on page 11. While demand for our programs has increased, rising costs and a changing economic and philanthropic model have prompted the Museum’s leadership to consider how best to shape our institution to continue to thrive in the next century. Please stay tuned for an opportunity to learn about our plans later this summer. With the promise of a very bright tomorrow in view, your support today speaks volumes, sending a compelling message that we hope will help power the Museum’s flight through our coming evolution and beyond. With so much at stake we are aiming high; anything less would be a missed opportunity to do all that we can for our beloved community. So thank you again for your support and please join us in thanking our Gala volunteer chairs, Wendy and Peter Gordon and Mike and Lynne Mazzeo, along with their dedicated volunteer committee, who made this year’s events so memorable and fun. We deeply appreciate all that our volunteers and guests do and we hope to see you at the Berkshire Museum in the coming months! Van W. a message from your

Gala Co-Chairs Welcome to the 2017 Berkshire Museum Wine Gala and Auction celebration. We are thrilled to be co-chairing the Gala this year and thank you for joining us. For more than 15 years the biannual Berkshire Museum Wine Gala and Auction has gathered some of the Museum’s most valued friends in celebration and to support the Museum’s education programs which now provide more than 26,000 educational experiences annually. Past events have raised a combined

this year, with your help, we expect to cross the $2 million mark – an incredible accomplishment. $1.8M, and

The Wine Gala and Auction has become a treasured tradition and we are in awe of the many of you who have been involved since the beginning. First and foremost, we humbly recognize the tremendous contributions to this year’s event (as well as all previous years) by Jim Nejaime. Jim and his wife Heidi have worked tirelessly to solicit wine donations, engage our guests of honor, and share the word about our cause. These events have been so successful because of the contributions of the Nejaimes – we are forever in their debt. We would like to thank the people who helped make the 2017 Wine Gala and Auction events possible. Each member of the Gala Committee has contributed in some important way, and we sincerely thank all of them for their efforts and ideas. Special acknowledgments must be made to Renee Erenburg for her help with décor, Carol Rabin for her hours of work on the chocolates you will receive when you leave the Gala (a delicious Berkshire Museum Wine Gala tradition!), Mike Addy for his wine expertise, and Eric Korenman for his assistance photographing wine lots. We also appreciate the hard work and dedication of the Berkshire Museum staff members who contributed to the success of this event. We want to personally thank our Guest of Honor Ken Wright for joining us this week and providing spectacular wines for the Wheatleigh and Gala dinners, as well as a wonderful auction lot. In addition, we are pleased to welcome back to the Berkshire Museum and extend special thanks to our auctioneer Marie Keep from Skinner Wine Auctions — we anticipate another spirited and successful live auction.

Again we thank you. Please bid often, bid high, and bid over your limit! We look forward to toasting you and those who came before you as we reach the $2 million mark in funds raised through the Wine Gala and Auction events. Most of all, please enjoy the celebration. Guest of honor

Ken Wright For Ken Wright, the inspiration for a career in wine came while, when waiting tables in Lexington, Kentucky, to put himself through school, he was exposed to fine wines from regions around the world. Wright left the Bluegrass State to attend enology and viticulture classes at UC-Davis and spent eight years making wine at vineyards in Monterey County on California’s central coast. Friends from the Willamette Valley in Oregon piqued Wright’s interest in the region and a trip to the Dundee Hills in 1976 convinced him that the finest Pinot Noir in North America was being grown there. In 1986, Wright moved to the Willamette Valley and started Panther Creek Cellars, where he began focusing on vineyarddesignate bottling, an idea that became a core philosophy in 1994 when Ken Wright Cellars was founded in historic downtown Carlton. Wright now makes a single vineyard bottling from 13 vineyard sites. With his appreciation of sense of place, Wright was instrumental in organizing the six new American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in the Northern Willamette Valley that define the distinct growing areas within the region. For the town of Carlton, Oregon, Wright helped develop a 20-year plan for the community. In 2003, Wright and his wife, Karen, bought and renovated the town’s 1923 train station which now houses the tasting room for Ken Wright Cellars. Wright was involved in the funding of a winery for the viticulture program at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon, and worked closely with the Yamhill-Carlton School district and the YC Agricultural Education Department to create the first ever high school viticulture program with an onsite working vineyard. Wright’s accomplishments have been recognized over the years. In 2005, Wright was awarded the VINI Award at Classic Wine Auction for a lifetime of service to the wine industry and Oregon’s community at large. In 2012 Ken and Karen Wright were voted Oregon Wine People of the Year and in 2014 Ken Wright Cellars was an American Winery of the Year Nominee. Wine from Ken Wright Cellars continues to receive scores 90 and above in Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast. In 2014, Wright’s 2012 Abbott Claim Vineyard Pinot Noir was ranked the number one wine in the world by Wine Enthusiast. In May 2015, Wright was featured on the cover of the Wine Spectator with a 9-page article on his lifetime achievements in the Oregon Pinot Noir industry.

Marie Keep

Marie Keep is the founder and director of the Fine Wines department at Skinner. In spearheading this strategic business effort, Marie was instrumental in establishing Skinner as the only major auction house in New England to offer fines wines at auction. Her personal knowledge and passionate appreciation for the finest producers and vintages have quickly made Skinner a viable venue for the consignment and purchase of fine wines. Actively involved in Boston’s growing food and wine community, and a long time wine connoisseur, Marie launched Skinner’s Fine Wines Department at the close of 2006. She also established Skinner’s collaboration with its retail partner, Lower Falls Wine Company, a third generation wine seller based just west of Boston. Marie also plays a key role operationally at Skinner as Managing Director of its two galleries. In this capacity she manages day to day operations at Skinner, oversees 60 auctions and events annually, and manages over a dozen staff members. Marie joined Skinner in 1998 as the Boston Gallery Director, a position she held until 2007. Prior to joining Skinner, Marie worked in New York at Christie’s auction house. Education Programs

The Berkshire Museum is a vibrant, busy place, ringing with the happy sounds of children exploring, learning, and sharing. One group of youngsters is exclaiming as they create hills, valleys, and ponds in the topographic sandbox; another group is engaged in the study of mammals, using specimens and objects from the Museum’s collection; and a group of toddlers sits in a circle, singing a song as they learn about rhythm and counting.

The Berkshire Museum leads the region in educational programs, from

school field trips and summer camps to weekly programs for home-schoolers and early learners. The Museum’s education team works closely with the area’s schools,

serving 30 districts and providing more than 26,000 individual student experiences annually. NO IMPRINT ON

By focusing on creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, all key twenty-first century learning skills, the Museum’s educational programs prepare “world ready” students. Children thrive when presented with the opportunity to experience hands-on science experiments, building robots, interacting with live animals, creating films and animation, making art, planting a garden, writing, and much more. Many of the education programs offered by the Berkshire Museum focus on serving students from low income households with little or no cultural exposure or educational support at home. We strive to provide programs either free or at very low cost, ensuring maximum access for all schools and students. From toddlers to high school students, the young people served by the Berkshire Museum’s educational programming encounter new worlds of science, history, and the arts, important experiences that expand their imaginations, give them new aspirations, and introduce skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. They deserve your

enthusiastic support.
