Inside Winter Carnival: A Breakdown of Field Events By Molly Crabtree

On the night of January 30, Berkshire students filled Allen Theater for Winter Carnival opening ceremonies with each dorm representing the theme of different music genres. There was a lot of hype among the student body about the theme this year, which was clear when members of all the dorms stormed Allen Theater at 7:30 before the field games began. Junior Eliza Griffin thought the theme “was jazzy”. Eipper lined the Allen Theater lobby, waiting for all the other dorms to pass through before they made their official entrance. Unlike the other dorms, Eipper remained straight-faced and silent, representing their Jazz theme appropriately. Further embodying their theme, Eipper was decked out in black and white attire holding saxophones and wearing dark sunglasses. Stanley was the first dorm to enter Allen Theater, filling the first two rows of seats.

Their outfits reflected attire kids wear to Electric music concerts. The other dorms were hesitant to enter Allen Theatre, vying to make a statement in front of the other dorms. Unlike the other dorms, Allen arrival was from the side entrance of Allen near the stage. Allen’s entrance was bold, dressed in flannels and cowboy hats, repeatedly saying, “We are Allen”. It took a couple of minutes before Mr. Quilty could calm down the hyped student body. When all the dorms were quiet enough, Mr. Quilty cued the prefect video, in which prefects from each dorm gave a sneak preview of their Winter Carnival music genre. After the prefect video was shown, each dorm ran out to the football field, prepared to take on the other dorms in the various races and games. Heading into these competitions, on the girls side, Spurr/Senior House were the overall points leaders with 2460 points. Not far behind was Godman with 2405 points. Likewise, Allen was leading on the boys end with 2405 points, with the day students not far behind with 2310.

Despite the freezing cold weather outside, the competitions on the football field got heated among the students. Both Spurr/ Senior House and Godman kept their first and second places in lock by winning their relay races; whereas DeWindt, Stanley and Buck came from behind and won their races, stealing the lead from Allen. Although Allen was not able to pull out a victory in the relays, they prevailed in the sled races, winning both heats. Eipper was able to pull out two victories in the sled races, making it a close battle for first place on the boy’s side. The utmost anticipated event on the football field was tug of war. Both Spurr/Senior House and CGR won both of their hard fought battles. Allen and Eipper were also able to pull off two victories in tug of war. Despite the cold weather, the energy remained upbeat during the whole duration students were outside. Senior Liza Jane Branch particularly noticed this enthusiasm, “I’ve never seen anything like this past weekend before at Berkshire. All of the dorms became united and worked together so well. It was incredible to experience, especially in Macmillan. Even in the crazy wind storm and freezing temperature, everyone was excited to be a part of the weekend.” Mr. Quilty was impressed with the efforts on the football field as well, “I loved the energy and the support the students offered to their teammates. It’s great to see them running around the sled race pulling their team with words of encouragement.” Heading into the ice skits, it was a close call for who was in first place for both the boys and girls. The judges would have a hard decision to make as all the dorms prepared for countless days and mornings to perfect their performances on the ice. Senior Olivia Silverman, prefect of Godman, choreographed the school’s largest girls dorms’ ice

skit with Caroline Welch. “Caroline and I made up the dance on land first, then taught it to the skater on ice the next morning.” The Spurr and Senior House figure skating skit not only received the most points (59) out of all the girl’s dorms, but also was rewarded with the most overall points. For the girls dorms, Godman followed with 56 points and not far behind was Day Students and Mac, both with 41 points. CGR trailed with 34 points. On the boy’s end, Eipper finished first with 51 points, followed by Allen with 57 points. The Day students finished up with 41 points and both Buck (35 points) and DeWindt (33 points) followed. Although there was a clear winner in the ice figure skating skits, the faculty were impressed with everyone’s efforts. Mr. Quilty reiterated this, “The figure skating may have been the best collective effort ever. I was impressed with their organization. All of the teams were searching for practice time during the week

to refine their choreography.” The energy did not die after the figure skating skits as students from each dorm played each other in broomball. CGR, Spurr, and Buck won two of their broomball games. The girl Day Students, boys Day Students, Eipper, Allen, and Stanley were all victorious in one of their games. The upbeat spirit continued into the next morning when the members of all each dorm performed their skits in Allen Theater. DeWindt made a statement when they received a standing ovation after performing Baba O’Riley (Teenage Wasteland) by The Who. Although DeWindt placed first for the boy’s dorm skits, Allen’s skit was also well thought out and popular among the judges. Prefect Jimmy McKee was enthused with his dorm’s performance, “It was a big collective effort, there was a lot of collaboration that helped us figure out what we were going to say and do. It was nice to see the entire dorm come together.” The Day Students’ skit in Allen was also

popular among both students and judges. Mr. Quilty was predominantly impressed with their performance, “A special shout out to the day students and their prefects. They had a great turn out both Friday night and Saturday morning.” Going into Trivia Night, it was a close race among all the dorms. Being Mr. Gulotta’s last Trivia Night, it was a particularly special evening and all the dorms were significantly involved. Despite all the valiant efforts of other participants, CGR prevailed and was rewarded both 1st place and 2195 points. Following was Spurr/Senior House (2167), Day Students (2070), Mac (2031), Godman (1890), Allen (1463), Eipper (1293), Buck (1284), DeWindt (1187), and Stanley (1134). The last efforts to receive points was through the ice sculpture competition, which Spurr/Senior House participated in, making an disco ball out of snow, along with other dorms. Although the snow later covered this sculpture on Monday, their efforts earned them noteworthy points.

Preparation for Winter Carnival

By James Coyle As Winter Carnival approached for students at Berkshire School, new students and faculty wondered what was in store. During Winter Carnival, teams comprised of dorms and day students who compete against one another during a series of great games, including broomball, dog sled races and other fun activities all of which can earn points for dorms. Winter Carnival is viewed as a “rigorous and congenial competition,” according to students of the Buck dormitory. Mike Schiffer, a prefect and viewed as “the godfather of Buck dormitory,” has experienced three winter carnivals at Berkshire. Schiffer views the competition as “The best time of the year. I love when the students come together and compete against one another. The students demonstrate great school spirit.” Both the students and faculty of Berkshire are “nervous and excited” about the upcoming events. When asked about his expectations for the carnival, Kevan Bowler the head of the history department, said he expected “the dorms to come together. It is a great honor to be crowned the Winter Carnival champion. It takes a team effort and preparation.” Although the days prior to Winter Carnival can be “stressful and demanding, it is worth all the trouble. Winter Carnival is what makes Berkshire a special place,” stated junior Josiah Tolvo. Overall, the feedback from students made it clear that this year’s Winter Carnival was one of the best.
