Vom 16.—21. September 2014 wird Berlin erneut zum Zentrum der Kunstwelt. Zur dritten Berlin Art Week haben sich die Messeformate abc art berlin contemporary und Positions Berlin sowie die renommierten Berliner Institutionen der Gegenwartskunst Akademie der Künste, Berlinische Galerie, C/O Berlin, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Haus am Waldsee, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, me Collectors Room, Nationalgalerie — Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein und neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst zusammengeschlossen und präsentieren an sechs Tagen die Vielfalt, Kreativität, Experimentierfreude und Qualität des Kunststandortes Berlin. Zugleich ist die Berlin Art Week ein wichtiger Wirtschaftsfaktor der Stadt. Eine Expertenjury — bestehend aus der Künstlerin Mathilde ter Heijne, dem Kunstkritiker Kolja Reichert und der Kuratorin und Dozentin Anna-Catharina Gebbers — hat weitere temporäre Partner für das Programm der Berlin Art Week ausgewählt. Zum ersten Mal findet die internationale Konferenz Artfi — The Fine Art and Finance Conference im Verlagsgebäude des Tagesspiegels in Berlin statt. Exklusiv zur Berlin Art Week gewähren auch einige Berliner Sammler wieder Einblicke in ihre Räume. Geführte Touren zu den Partnern und Galerienrundgänge stehen ebenfalls auf dem Programm. Mit einem Kombiticket für alle Ausstellungsorte werden sechs Tage zu einem vielfältigen Kunsterlebnis (Preise und weitere Infos ab Seite 54). Sie sind herzlich eingeladen zur großen Eröffnung der Berlin Art Week am 16. September um 19 Uhr, die in diesem Jahr gemeinsam mit der Ausstellungseröffnung »Schwindel der Wirklichkeit« in der Akademie der Künste am Hanseatenweg 10 stattfindet.

From 16—21 September 2014, Berlin will once again become the centre of the art world. This year for the third time the art fairs abc art berlin contemporary and Positions Berlin and the city’s prominent institutions of contemporary art Akademie der Künste, Berlinische Galerie, C/O Berlin, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Haus am Waldsee, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, me Collectors Room, Nationalgalerie—Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst join efforts and present for six days the variety, creativity, experimental spirit, and quality that Berlin has to offer as an art location. At the same time, the art event is an important economic factor for the city as well. A highly qualified jury, this year consisting of the artist Mathilde ter Heijne, art critic Kolja Reichert, and curator and lecturer Anna-Catharina Gebbers, has chosen additional temporary partners for the programme of Berlin Art Week. For the first time this year, the international conference Artfi—The Fine Art and Finance Conference will take place at Tagesspiegel headquarters. Exclusively for Berlin Art Week, several Berlin collectors provide insights into their spaces. Guided tours of select locations and gallery tours in various neighbourhoods are also on the programme. With a combi-ticket for all exhibition sites, the six days can offer a widely varied art experience (For pricing and more information, see p. 54). Welcome to the Third Berlin Art Week 2014

Berlin’s art world keeps on the move, developing and changing so quickly that it’s increasingly challenging to keep track of it all. The six days of Berlin Art Week, now a fixed date in the second half of September, can help. Begun in 2012 as a joint effort of Berlin’s most important contemporary art institutions, this platform, now held for the third time, presents an art week that could hardly be any more vital to an audience from Germany and around the world. Whether in individual positions or at curated thematic exhibitions, Berlin Art Week presents a world of art and culture that shows a great deal of creativity and commitment, proving that Berlin rightly enjoys the reputation of an attractive and innovative art centre. At the same time, the art event is an important economic factor for the city as well. Artists, collectors, gallerists, museum directors, curators, and all those interested in art come to the city from all over the world for Berlin Art Week. Once again, there are lots of new things to discover, and the familiar will also surprise us all with new offerings. As a centre for art production, Berlin is always providing new impulses with the help of the city’s many project spaces, artist initiatives, and galleries. Once again this year, the partners of Berlin Art Week, the fairs, exhibition institutions, and the temporary jury-selected partners offer a rich opportunity for discovery, exchange, and inspiration, with exhibition openings and many special events. All visitors, art connoisseurs and art lovers alike, Berliners and guests from around the world, are cordially invited to enjoy the lively diversity of the city’s art world. A format like Berlin Art Week can only succeed if all those involved—the partners from the very beginning, the jury, the temporary and new partners, the city’s galleries, and Kulturprojekte Berlin—contribute their experience and their passion. Willkommen zur dritten Berlin Art Week 2014

Berlins Kunstszene bleibt in Bewegung. Sie entwickelt und verändert sich so rasant, dass es eine immer größere Herausforderung ist, den Überblick zu bewahren. Die Berlin Art Week — inzwischen ein fester Termin in der zweiten Septemberhälfte — verschafft gebündelt an sechs Tagen Abhilfe. Als Zusammenschluss wichtiger Akteure der zeitgenössischen Kunstszene Berlins im Jahr 2012 gestartet, bietet die Plattform bereits zum dritten Mal einem nationalen und internationalen Publikum eine Kunstwoche, die lebendiger kaum sein könnte. Ob künstlerische Einzelposition oder thematisch kuratierte Gruppenschau, zur Berlin Art Week zeigen die Kunst- und Kulturproduzenten wieder mit viel Kreativität und Engagement, dass Berlin zu Recht den Ruf einer international attraktiven und innovativen Kunstmetropole hat. Zugleich ist das formatübergreifende Kunstereignis ein wichtiger Wirtschaftsfaktor der Stadt. Künstler, Sammler, Galeristen, Museumsdirektoren, Kuratoren und Kunstinteressierte aus der ganzen Welt treffen sich zur Berlin Art Week. Es gibt viel Neues zu entdecken, aber auch Vertrautes wird Überraschungen bieten. Als Ort der Kunstproduktion setzt Berlin immer wieder neue Impulse. Dazu tragen die zahlreichen Projekträume, Künstlerinitiativen und Galerien bei. Mit rund 110 Einzelpositionen zeitgenössischer Kunst und einem umfangreichen Programm präsentiert sich die abc art berlin contemporary vom 18.—21. September in den Hallen der Station am Gleisdreieck in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Zahlreiche nationale und internationale Galerien — darunter sowohl junge als auch etablierte — zeigen Arbeiten internationaler Künstlerinnen und Künstler. Es werden vor allem neue Arbeiten und Premieren zu sehen sein. abc bietet während der gesamten vier Tage Performances, Künstlergespräche, Soundarbeiten, Film- und Theaterinszenierungen. Das Programm wird ergänzt durch die abc gallery nights, die Eröffnungen in den Berliner Galerien am Mittwoch- und Freitagabend. With 110 single positions of contemporary art and an extensive programme, abc art berlin contemporary is being held this year from 18—21 September at the Station in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Numerous galleries—both young and established, national and international—will present mainly new works and premieres. The four day abc programme offers a packed calendar of performances, artists talks, sound pieces, films and theatre productions across the entire site. The programme is complemented by the abc gallery nights, openings at the Berlin galleries on Wednesday and Friday evening.

Vom 18.—21. September 2014 findet die erste Ausgabe der POSITIONS BERLIN statt. Mit der neuen Messe bieten Kristian Jarmuschek und sein Team bis zu 40 ausgewählten Ausstellern die Möglichkeit, die prägnantesten künstlerischen Positionen ihres Programms im Rahmen der Berlin Art Week vorzustellen. Der Schauplatz, das Kaufhaus Jandorf in der Brunnenstraße im Stadtteil Mitte, ist mit einer reliefverzierten Fassade, großen Fensterflächen und dem für Berlin typischen Charme unsanierter Altbauten ein faszinierender und zugleich zentral gelegener Veranstaltungsort. Nationale und internationale Kunst werden hier in einer auf den Raum reagierenden Ausstellungsarchitektur mit Kojen und Solowänden präsentiert. POSITIONS BERLIN will das Spektrum bereits vorhandener Formate in Berlin erweitern, indem sie nicht nur schlaglichtartig auf die zeitgenössische Kunstszene Berlins und aufstrebende junge Positionen schaut, sondern auch aktuelle und etablierte Kunst zeigt. Damit setzt sich die Messe zum Ziel, den Überblick und Diskurs über die Entwicklungen des Kunstmarktes in Berlin wieder umfänglicher zu ermöglichen. The first POSITIONS BERLIN will be held from 18—21 September 2014. With this new art fair, up to 40 select galleries present their most striking artistic positions as part of Berlin Art Week. The fascinating showplace, the former Kaufhaus Jandorf centrally located on Brunnenstraße in Berlin-Mitte, features a façade rich in reliefs and large windows, exuding the typical Berlin charm of unrenovated old buildings. The fair presents art from Germany and around the world with an exhibition architecture with booths and solo walls that reacts to the space. POSITIONS BERLIN seeks to expand the already existing formats, not only spotlighting Berlin’s contemporary art world and upcoming young positions, but also showing current, established art. In this way, the fair seeks to allow for a greater overview and discussion about developments on the Berlin art market.

Schwindel der Wirklichkeit Vertigo of Reality 17. sep—14. DEZ Das Programm »Schwindel der Wirklichkeit« fragt nach der Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion von Wirklichkeit in den Künsten. Die Ausstellung stellt künstlerische Strategien und Arbeitsweisen vor, in denen die Wahrnehmung des Betrachters im Zentrum steht. Das Kunstwerk verwirklicht sich nur in und durch ihn selbst. Dabei stehen die aktuellen Entwicklungen der Game Art in einer Tradition künstlerischer Auseinandersetzungen seit den 1960er Jahren, insbesondere von Closed Circuit Videoinstallationen, aber auch Performances, Partizipationsprojekten, Filmen, Fotografien und Spiegelobjekten. Zu sehen sind Arbeiten von Marina Abramović, Alexander Bruce, Peter Campus, Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Christian Falsnaes, Harun Farocki, Hamish Fulton, Jochen Gerz, Dan Graham, gold extra, Richard Kriesche, Bjørn Melhus, Bruce Nauman, Julian Oliver / Danja Vasiliev, Trevor Paglen, Paidia Institute, Nam June Paik, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Tino Sehgal, Tale of Tales und vielen mehr. Inmitten der Ausstellung nimmt das »Metabolische Büro zur Reparatur von Wirklichkeit« Themen der Schau auf.

“Vertigo of Reality” examines the construction and deconstruction of reality in the arts. The exhibition presents artistic strategies and methods of working which focus on the viewer’s perception. The artwork materialises only in and through the viewers themselves. Current developments in game art here stand within a tradition of artistic explorations beginning in the 1960s, in particular closed circuit video installations, as well as performances, participation projects, films, photographs, and mirror objects. On view are works by Marina Abramović, Alexander Bruce, Peter Campus, Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Christian Falsnaes, Harun Farocki, Hamish Fulton, Jochen Gerz, Dan Graham, gold extra, Richard Kriesche, Bjørn Melhus, Bruce Nauman, Julian Oliver / Danja Vasiliev, Trevor Paglen, Paidia Institute, Nam June Paik, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Tino Sehgal, and Tale of Tales among others. Die Gruppe raumlabor berlin verbindet in ihrer Praxis Architektur, Kunst und Urbanismus. Das »Küchenmonument« ist eine Soziale Skulptur von raumlabor berlin und plastique fantastique und greift die Küche als Ort der Kommunikation auf. Es erweitert das Museum während der Schließzeit in den Stadtraum und lässt einen durchscheinenden Raum für temporäre Gemeinschaften entstehen. In their work, raumlabor berlin combines architecture, art, and urbanism. The “Küchenmonument” is a social sculpture by raumlabor berlin and plastique fantastique, and takes up the kitchen as a site of communication. It expands the museum while it is closed into urban space, allowing space to emerge for temporary communities.

Meschac Gaba: Museum of Contemporary African Art In Kooperation mit Tate Modern / In collaboration with Tate Modern 20. SEP—16. NOV Meschac Gabas »Museum of Contemporary African Art« (1997—2002) ist eine 12 Räume umfassende Installation — die KunstHalle wird sieben dieser Räume zeigen —, die das grundsätzliche Wesen des Museums und die Wahrnehmung afrikanischer Kunst kritisch hinterfragt. Gabas Museum ist temporär und wandelbar, viel mehr ein konzeptioneller als ein physischer Raum. Als Provokation gegenüber dem westlichen Kunstbetrieb fordert es nicht nur mehr Anerkennung für afrikanische Gegenwartskunst, sondern wirft auch die Frage auf, warum diese kulturellen Abgrenzungen existieren. Die Ausstellung steht am Anfang der Kooperation der Deutsche Bank KunstHalle und der Tate Modern. In den kommenden Jahren werden innerhalb dieser Zusammenarbeit drei Ausstellungen in Berlin realisiert, die künstlerische Positionen aus Asien und Afrika präsentieren.

Meschac Gaba’s “Museum of Contemporary African Art” (1997—2002) is an installation consisting of 12 rooms. KunstHalle presents seven of these rooms, which critically question the essence of the museum and the perception of African art. Gaba’s museum is temporary and transformable, more a conceptual than a physical space. A provocation of the Western art world, it not only demands more recognition for African contemporary art, but also raises the question of why these cultural distinctions exist. The exhibition marks the start of a collaborative effort between Deutsche Bank KunstHalle and Tate Modern. In coming years, three exhibitions will be presented in Berlin as part of this collaboration, showing artistic positions from Asia and Africa.

Michael Sailstorfer B-Seite / B-Side 5. SEP—9. NOV Als herausragender Konzeptkünstler unter den jüngeren deutschen Bildhauern arbeitet Michael Sailstorfer (*1979) mit Objekten der Natur, der Technik, dem urbanen Raum und der Kunstgeschichte. Umkehr- und Umdeutungsstrategien werden eingesetzt, mit denen er Funktionen aufgreift, zu Ende denkt und ad absurdum führt. Er entzieht den Dingen ihren ursprünglichen Zweck, zerlegt, deformiert, adaptiert sie, um sie neu zusammen zu setzen. Daraus entstehen kraftvolle Installationen, die in der Ausstellung vor allem das kreative Potenzial unserer unmittelbaren Alltagsumgebung sichtbar machen. Sailstorfer hat in den vergangenen fünfzehn Jahren ein bedeutendes Oeuvre geschaffen, das international wahrgenommen wird und eine eigenständige Position im zeitgenössischen Diskurs zur Bildhauerei markiert.

As one of the most outstanding conceptual artists among young German sculptors today, Michael Sailstorfer (born in 1979) works with objects from nature, urban space, and art history. Strategies of reversal and reinterpretation are used to take up functions that he thinks through to the end, taking them to absurd lengths. He removes things from their original purpose, dissecting, deforming, and adapting them to reassemble them anew. In this way, powerful installations emerge that reveal the creative potential of our immediate everyday environment. Over the past fifteen years, Sailstorfer has created a significant body of work that has received international acclaim and marks a unique position in contemporary sculptural discourse.

The Artist at Work Adam Avikainen 20. + 21. SEP 16—19 Uhr / 4—7 pm Für den Maler und Autor Adam Avikainen wird die gesamte Natur zum Schauplatz eines Verbrechens in einer fortlaufenden Geschichte, die alle Elemente seines Lebens in einem ausgedehnten künstlerischen Prozess subsumiert. CSI DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES befasst sich mit der Rolle der Naturwissenschaften in unserer Gegenwart, dem Künstler als Medium und Detektiv sowie der Malerei als Praxis. Avikainen spielt mit wissenschaft lichen Methoden und Theorien ebenso wie mit forensischen Methodologien, weitet sie auf poetische Weise aus zu einer fortwährenden narrativen Untersuchung. Für die 333 investigativen Episoden der neuen Arbeit wird die Umgebung des HKW zur Produktionsstätte. Die Installation ist Teil von »Das AnthropozänProjekt. Ein Bericht«, dem groß angelegten Abschlussprogramm des 2-jährigen »Anthropozän-Projektes«. Zusammen mit Arbeiten von The Otolith Group und »Anthropocene Observatory« wird Adam Avikainens Installation im Haus der Kulturen der Welt ab dem 17.10. zu sehen sein.

For the painter and writer Adam Avikainen, all of nature becomes a crime scene in a continuing story that subsumes elements of his life in an extended artistic process. CSI DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES deals with the role of the natural sciences in our present, the artist as a medium and a detective, and painting as practice. Avikainen plays with academic methods and theories as well as with forensic methodologies, expanding them in a poetic way to a continuous narrative exploration. For the 333 investigative episodes of the new work, the surroundings of Haus der Kulturen der Welt will become a production site. The installation is part of “The Anthropocene Project. A Report”, the large-scale concluding programme of the two-year “Anthropocene Project”. Together with works by the Otolith Group and the “Anthropocene Observatory”, Adam Avikainen’s installation will be on view at HKW starting 17 October.

Die KW Institute for Contemporary Art freuen sich, die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung von Ryan Trecartin in Deutschland zu präsentieren. Sein Film ist die Bühne für ein Ensemble völlig überdrehter Charaktere, die uns befremden und uns gleichzeitig bekannt erscheinen und die manchmal in Form von HybridMenschen aus der Zukunft auftauchen, welche in eine verzerrte und irreale Gegenwart zurückkehren. Das parallel zum Film entwickelte Environment nimmt die Erzählstränge des Films auf und platziert die BetrachterInnen in einer Struktur, die zwischen mehreren Wirklichkeiten oszilliert. For the exhibition at KW, Ryan Trecartin has produced a new, site-specific work, that continues to challenge the movie form and viewing experience. KW Institute for Contemporary Art is proud to present Ryan Trecartin’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. His movie creates performance platforms for a cast of hyper intense characters that are simultaneously strange and recognizable, sometimes appearing as future hybrid-human forms, returned to a distorted and unreal present moment. In the exhibition context, a sculptural environment reflects the film’s narratives, and is created in tandem with the movie, positioning the viewer in a structure that oscillates between multiple perceptual realities.

SEP 2014—11. jan 2015 Eröffnung: 13. sep, 17—22 Uhr / Opening: 13 sep, 5—10 pm Die diesjährige Gewinnerin des Kunstpreises der Schering Stiftung, Kate Cooper, eröffnet im September 2014 ihre erste Einzelausstellung in den KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin. In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Künstlerin intensiv mit der Frage beschäftigt, wie neue Technologien unser Handeln beeinflussen. Cooper untersucht nicht nur Formen der Online-Selbstinszenierung und die Entstehung unterschiedlicher Formen von ›agency‹, sondern aktiviert und inszeniert sie im Rahmen ihrer künstlerischen Praxis. Kate Cooper, this year’s winner of the Schering Stiftung Art Award, will open her first institutional solo exhibition in September 2014 at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. Over the last few years, the British artist has investigated the way new technologies influence behavior. Cooper not only explores modes of online self fashioning as celebrated on the internet and the emergence of different forms of ‘agency’, but she has also managed to activate and perform them in her practice.

Studioprogramm Ilit Azoulay Residency Program 14. SEP—9. nov Ilit Azoulay bezog im Juni 2013 ein Studio in den KW und nutzte in den fünf Monaten ihres Aufenthalts die Möglichkeit, ihr Interesse an der Archäologie von Städten zu vertiefen. In Deutschland sammelte und fotografierte sie Objekte und architektonische Fragmente. In den KW präsentiert sie nun die Ergebnisse ihres Aufenthaltes. Ilit Azoulay moved into her studio at KW in June, 2013, and used her five-month residency to develop her interest in the archeology of cities. During her travels throughout Germany, she collected and photographed objects and architectural fragments. For her exhibition at KW, Azoulay presents the photographed objects in a site-specific installation.

In der Betrachtung des Individuums als Wunderkammer entstehen neue Definitionen der historischen Kategorien: Artificialia, Naturalia, Scientifica, Mirabilia und Exotica werden zu Instinkt, Simulacra, Geist, Absonderlichkeiten und Exotica und ermöglichen so spannungsvolle und überraschende Beziehungen zwischen Wunderkammerobjekten und Werken der Gegenwart. “EXOTICA” circles around the question of the self in our time, using Wunderkammer Olbricht as its point of departure. Sein Werk ist kompromisslos, seine Produktion an Gemälden und Zeichnungen lässt viele Assoziationen zu. »No Father No Mother« ist Gershunis erste Einzelausstellung in einem Museum außerhalb Israels. Moshe Gershuni is one of the most significant living Israeli artists. His oeuvre is uncompromising, and his prolific production of paintings, drawings, and sculptures is extremely evocative. “No Father No Mother” is Gershuni’s first solo show in a museum outside Israel.

Der Künstler setzt sich mit der Verwendung von Computerspielen zur Ausbildung amerikanischer Soldaten auseinander und reflektiert den Einfluss bildgebender Technologien auf unsere kollektive Vorstellung vom Krieg. Harun Farocki’s four-part series “Serious Games” (2009—2010), is being presented in Berlin for the first time. The artist engages with the use of computer games to train American soldiers and reflects on the influence of visual technologies on our collective notion of war.

Das Raster des Alphabets bietet einen facettenreichen Zugang zu Werken der Konzeptkunst, Minimal Art und Arte Povera. Die Präsentation wird vierteljährlich erneuert und greift einzelne Positionen, wichtige Ausstellungen und künstlerische Gattungen auf. The exhibition “A—Z. The Marzona Collection” is a celebration of the conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s and offers a rich approach to works of Conceptual Art, Minimal Art, and Arte Povera. Luca Vitone (*1964 in Genua, lebt in Mailand und Berlin) beschäftigt sich in seinem künstlerischen Werk mit der Konstruktion und Repräsentation von Schauplätzen und Orten und den verschiedenen Sprachen, die diese in all ihren geographischen, politischen, sozialen, kulturellen und poetischen Dimensionen beschreiben. In einer Reihe von Arbeiten, zuletzt präsentiert auf der 55. Biennale Venedig 2013, erschafft Vitone olfaktorische ›Skulpturen‹, die allein durch die Präsenz eines Duftes im Raum das kollektive Gedächtnis ansprechen und Assoziationen bei den BetrachterInnen auslösen. Luca Vitone (born in Genoa, 1964, lives in Milan and Berlin) deals in his artwork with the construction and representation of sites and locations in various languages, describing them in all their geographical, political, social, cultural, and political dimensions. In a series of works presented at the 55th Venice Biennial in 2013, Vitone creates olfactory ‘scuptures’, which solely due to the presence of a smell in the space address the collective memory, triggering associations among those visiting the exhibition.

Katharina Grosse (*1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) ist vor allem bekannt durch ihre großen, raumgreifenden Malereien, die der Farbe einen die üblichen Dimensionen des Bildes übersteigenden Spielraum erschließen. Die von ihr verwendeten Formen des Farbauftrags, unter anderem mit Pinsel, Rolle oder Sprühdüse, sind so vielfältig wie der Malgrund und ihre räumliche Erstreckung über Boden, Decke und Wände, über ganze Gebäude oder als Eingriff in die Landschaft. Katharina Grosse (born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1961, lives and works in Berlin) is wellknown primarily for her large, spatially expansive paintings that open a space for the paint to transgress the usual pictorial dimensions. The forms of paint application she utilizes, which include brushes, rolls, or spray cans, are as varied as the supports she uses, and their spatial expansion over the floors, ceilings, and walls, over entire buildings, or as an intervention in the landscape.

The Ultimate Capital is the Sun Metabolismus in Kunst, Politik, Philosophie und Wissenschaft 20. SEP—16. NOV Die Ausstellung nimmt Bezug auf das griechische Wort metabolē — ursprünglich ›verändern‹ und wörtlich ›umstürzen‹. Sie untersucht, wie das Denkmodell ›Metabolismus‹ in der Gegenwartskunst verstanden wird und tritt dabei in einen Dialog mit wissenschaftlicher Forschung jenseits eurozentrischer Perspektiven. Der biologische Metabolismus beschreibt einen konstituierenden Prozess, in dem sich Lebewesen in einem permanenten Austausch mit ihrer Umwelt befinden. So steht beispielsweise am Anfang der Nahrungskette die Fotosynthese — ein konstantes Einfangen und Verdichten von Sonnenenergie und damit die Versorgung der gesamten Biosphäre. Im Hinblick auf das parasitäre Verhältnis des irdischen Lebens zum Kosmos bezeichnet der französische Philosoph Michel Serres die Sonne als unseren energetischen Horizont und als das ›ultimative Kapital‹ (Michel Serres, »Der Parasit«).

The Greek word metabolē originally meant ‘to change’ and, literally, ‘to throw over’. The exhibition investigates the understanding of ‘metabolism’ in contemporary art in a dialogue with philosophical and scientific research beyond Eurocentric rationalization. Biological metabolism is a process that constitutes living beings in continuous exchange with their environment. Photosynthesis, for instance, struggles to capture and condense solar energy at the basis of the food chain that sustains the whole biosphere. For the parasitic relation of terrestrial life with the outside cosmos, the French philosopher Michel Serres in his book “The Parasite” once defined the sun as our energetic horizon and the very ‘ultimate capital’.

The Rio based artist Otavio Schipper has developed a new work for die raum that responds to the claustrophobic dimensions of the exhibition space. In line with the surrealistic aesthetic of Schipper's oeuvre and his tendency toward the mechanical traces of early modernization, the installation references concepts of time and the subconscious.

Fabras Mutter war Aktivistin im Kampf gegen das Regime Uruguays der 70er. Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellung ist ein in Haft entstandener Brief der Mutter an den Sohn in Form eines Kinderbuches. Fabra’s mother was involved in the Uruguayan urban guerilla movement against the dictatorship during the 1970s. The starting point of “Noviembre” is a letter in the form of a children’s book that his mother wrote to him while incarcerated.

Die KUNSTSAELE BERLIN sind Ausstellungsraum der Sammlungen Bergmeier und Oehmen. In »Panoramic Avenue« befinden sich Werke der Sammlungen in Konversation mit zeitgenössischen und jüngeren historischen Positionen. KUNSTSAELE BERLIN is an exhibition space housing the Bergmeier and Oehmen collections. At “Panoramic Avenue”, works from the collections are brought into conversation with contemporary and more recent historical positions.

Die Sammlung Boros ist eine Privatsammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst mit Werkgruppen internationaler Künstler von 1990 bis heute. Seit 2008 sind Teile der Sammlung in einem umgebauten Bunker auf 3000 qm öffentlich zugänglich. Boros Collection is a private collection of contemporary art including the work of international artists from 1990 to the present. Since 2008, parts of the collection have been publically accessible in a 3000 square meter space of a former bunker.

Durch die Zusammen stellung von ausgesuchten Arbeiten soll in der Fotografiesammlung Arthur de Ganay aufgezeigt werden, dass die Fotografie der Malerei innerhalb der bildenden Künste durchaus gleichwertig ist. The works shown from the Arthur de Ganay Photography Collection attest to the equal artistic stature of photography and painting.

Die Sammlung Hoffmann umfasst Werke zeitgenössischer Kunst, erworben seit 1968 von Rolf und Erika Hoffmann. In ihren Büro- und Wohnräumen sind zur Zeit Arbeiten verschiedener Generationen und Medien zum Thema ›unterwegs‹ installiert. Sammlung Hoffmann consists of works of contemporary art purchased since 1968 by Rolf and Erika Hoffmann. Currently on view at their offices and residential space are works from various generations and media on the subject of ‘underway’.
