One girl’s wish to meet Johnny Depp comes true By Katherine Vandrilla Special to The Citizen
The Federal Department of Agriculture released a new meal plan that dictates what school districts serve as beverages, meats, vegetables, bread, greens and what is required for each serving size. July 1 marked the start of new nutritional standards schools will
(Katherine Vandrilla was required to keep this story under wraps for the past year, due to certain confidential aspects of the Johnny Depp project. A Berlin High School graduate and contributor to The Berlin Citizen, she now reveals her involvement in the Make-A-Wish program - which led to an encounter with Depp - in this exclusive story.) The Make-A-Wish Foundation gives children facing lifethreatening illnesses the one thing they want most. Never did I expect to be on the receiving end of this immense generosity. As a teenager I was diagnosed with leukemia, a blood cancer, and was told that I qualified for a wish. I knew instantaneously what I’d choose: to meet Johnny Depp. If you know one thing about me, it’s that Johnny Depp is a huge part of my life. I discovered him at the age of 12, and have never looked back. In the beginning, he was my favorite actor and the reason for my dream of acting. When I got sick, he became so much more than that. He gave me something to look forward

Changes in the cafeteria for healthy student lifestyle By Monica Szakacs and Farrah Duffany Staff writers
For this up and coming school year, parents and students can expect a change in the cafeteria and it’s not the lines or seating area. All five schools will serve 100 percent whole wheat products, and
meals will include a larger portion of fruits and vegetables, according to Director of Food Services and Chef Timothy Prosinski. “For a few years now, we have been proactive and have slowly introduced the kids to healthier foods and larger fruits and vegetables servings.”

The remainder of Patterson Way is posted “No Parking” on both sides of the roadway for the safety of the children and motorists traveling on the street. The “No Parking” areas will be strictly enforced for parking violations of state law and violators will be issued a state infraction in the amount of $92. (A parked vehicle is defined in Connecticut law as a motor vehicle in a stationary position within the limits of a public highway. Sitting in a stopped vehicle waiting to pick up a student falls under this definition.) Berlin High School students should also be mindful of the various laws that pertain to them. There are several laws that can result in a 30 or 60 day suspension of driving privileges. McGee Middle School and Griswold Elementary School - Parents must utilize the designated pick-up and drop-off points inside the school parking areas. 1254019
The Berlin Police Department reminds motorists to keep a watchful eye out for children in the roadways, as the school year begins. Watch out for school busses and children waiting at bus stops or walking to school. Obey all posted traffic controls and the directions of school crossing guards on Grove Street in East Berlin and Norton Road in Berlin. Speed limits in the areas of all schools will be strictly enforced with the aid of both radar and laser, according the Berlin Police Department. The speed limit in a school zone is 25 MPH and is strictly enforced with a minimum fine of $182. Passing a standing school bus (state law) will also be strictly enforced with a $465 infraction for the first offense. Areas of particular interest include: Berlin High School - There are two designated student pick-up and drop-off areas at the high school. One pick-up/drop-off area is located inside the student parking lot near the glass doors that lead to the gym. The second is on the east bound side of Patterson Way directly opposite the teacher’s parking

Community garden offers plots, and relaxation By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen While the purpose of community gardens is to offer people who may not have the space to build a garden on their property an accessible plot of land, Berlin’s garden also offers a peaceful place for gardeners to work. That’s according to Patricia
Bigelow, a Conservation Commission member, and one of the driving forces behind the creation of Hatchery Brook Community Garden. “The community garden is a good thing for the town, and the people always seem to enjoy gardening in the peaceful setting,” she said. “There are blue birds that come and land
on the fence, and you always see flocks of birds flying over. People come there with their dogs to walk on the hiking trails. All around it’s just relaxing.” In early 2008, the Conservation Commission designated a portion of the town-owned land at 685 Orchard Rd. for a

community garden. Bigelow, who is the garden coordinator, initiated a plan for the commission on how to start the garden. This use, for a portion of this open space property, was approved by the Town Council. “When I was a student up at UConn, I had started a community garden on campus for the students,” she said. “So, I already had experience on how to cultivate the land for crops and how to get a big community garden started. I volunteered back in
2008, and I am still volunteering today.” With Bigelow’s help, gardeners were able to plant their first crops, in May 2009, at the former Scheer Farm, according to the Conservation Commission’s webpage. Walking onto the former Scheer Farm, there is an open field that leads to woodland where several hiking trails around Berlin connect. Right next to the parking lot, the garden lies surrounded by a deer fence to keep crops safe from wildlife. There is also a well on the property, which draws a water supply for the gardens. Gardeners can grow what

All crops are grown organically. “First of, it is a conservation area and number two, we are on top of an aquifer and we are very close to Hatchery Brook,” Bigelow said. The garden holds 34 plots, and currently there are three or four that were not rented

Bigelow said the open plots do have “cover crops” planted to keep the soil nurtured. “We want to be able to control what’s growing in the garden,” she said. “You don’t want to leave soil idle, otherwise you’re going to get a lot of weed growth. We have one big plot that we are going to plant a turnip crop.” Hatchery Brook community gardeners grow crops for their own personal use

A cooler is set up in the garden around harvest time where people may place vegetables if they choose to donate. The garden also has a plot set aside specifically for crops to be grown for the Berlin Senior Center. “Last year, I believe we raised around 600 pounds in vegetables that was split between the Senior Center and Salvation Army,” Bigelow said. As summer comes to end, farmers’ market still open fresh herbs and homemade sauce, and finish with delectable biscotti and candied pecans. Although summer is reaching its conclusion, the Berlin Farmers’ Market is still in full swing. Located in the new Labieniec’s Feed Store parking lot across the street from Dairy Queen, the market features much more
than what one usually expects at a farmers’ market. Visitors will find locally grown fruits and vegetables, goats milk soap, jewelry, cookies, houseplants, hand carved wooden lighthouses and pet dish holders, just to name a few items. The market also features a unique solo guitar player providing live entertainment for mar-

Mayor welcomes Okay Industries to town By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen As Berlin welcomed a new manufacturing company Aug. 14 to the community, Mayor Adam Salina said Okay Industries, Inc., will anchor the town because the company already is a “corporate leader in manufacturing essential medical tools.” “It’s more than just being a new business, it’s being an outstanding corporate community service leader,” he said to a crowd of about 200 employees during the corporation’s new facility welcoming ceremony, and corporation’s 100th anniversary. The Berlin facility will create 20 to 30 new jobs in which the company will hire new people and transfer others from the New Britain facility, according to Okay Industries CEO Jason Howey. Most of the new positions will include manufacturing technicians who will be responsible in programing the machines to run on their own. Gov. Dannel Malloy spoke during the welcoming ceremony to celebrate the growth of Connecticut businesses. Malloy said the new facility will help grow the state’s economy because the company is adding jobs “during a

I inherited a job with a state that lost jobs for 22 years,” he said. “In the 19 months that I’ve been governor, we added over 20,000 private sector jobs to our economy- some of those at this very company.” Other dignitaries in attendance that toured the facility to learn about the company’s

Okay Industries’ world headquarters is located in New Britain and the company has a medical and precision component manufacturing facility in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The new 63,000 square feet facility in Berlin, located on New Park Drive, will serve as a medical and engineering plant. Howey said the Berlin stand-alone facility will allow the company to focus on the quality and precision of its Accu-Blade® surgical blades that are designed to reduce cutting force. “Our goal is to help redefine how our medical costumers treat their patients,” he said. be required to follow under the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and new guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “In the near future it’s going to be government mandated that all schools across the state and nationwide serve larger amounts of vegetables and fruits,” Prosinski said. The Healthy Hunger-Free
Kids Act of 2010 gives the USDA the “opportunity to make real reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs by improving the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children,” according to the USDA website. “It’s the first time that the USDA made such significant changes with meal patterns,” said Susan Fiore, the nutrition education coordinator at the Connecticut State Department of Education. “I think it’s going to be a process because
some of the requirements will be quite different and kids may not be used to it.” The changes will affect more than 32 million children nationwide and is being described as the largest change to school lunches in 15 years. The new standards, based on dietary guidelines, will be implemented in phases. Fruit requirements at breakfast and lunch will be increased. Half of the grain products must be whole-grainrich foods. Only low-fat milk will be served, and a certain amount of legumes, orange, red, or green vegetables will be required on the school menu each week. Many of the changes are expected to occur gradually, over three years. By 2014, every grain that is served will have to be whole grain. Lunches will have to consist of a serving of milk, a vegetable or fruit and a meal. Instead of grabbing a slice of pizza and a drink, students also will have to take a vegetable or a fruit. This month, Prosinski and his managing staff will attend a USDA training session to learn more about the nation-
wide healthy foods initiative. Prosinski already attended a conference in June, but will gain further training on how to increase the nutritional value of each school meal. Prosinski estimates about 90 percent of the school district’s past food items where whole wheat. He said kids sometimes had a choice between white, whole grain or whole wheat rolls and other sandwich breads. This year Food Services will receive shipments of fresh whole wheat breads from a deli, which will include rolls and grinders. Fiore believes that, although there is a chance of revenue loss at first, these nutritional standards are critical to children’s health and can make a difference in the way American children are eating. “It sets a good role model for the way that kids should be eating,” Fiore said. “It follows national health recommendations and focuses on a meal that is heavily based on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. It’s definitely a recommendation based on the best science we have at the time to how we need to eat to be healthy and to
avoid the risk of heart disease.” According to a news release on the USDA website, the standards for the act spawned from a collaboration with a panel of experts assembled by the Institute of Medicine, a nonprofit organization that provides health analysis based on evidence. While creating the new standards, the panel and USDA also kept in mind some major changes from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that aims to foster healthy eating habits and encourages the changes at home. The release stated that “the final standards make the same kinds of practical changes that many parents are already encouraging at home” such as offering more fruits and vegetables to the children every day. Another major change that comes along with the new nutritional standards is that every school around the country will be using the same menu planning system. In the past, schools had several options to choose from for their menu, but now all schools have to plan the menu based on the food items they serve.

Five ways to prepare your child for a successful school year Back-to-school season is an important transition for students and their parents. Regardless of grade level, how well a student is prepared – physically, intellectually and emotionally – has a profound effect on her or his ability to learn and grow in the classroom. By following these tips from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, parents can help their child begin the school year with better ease. 1. Begin the transition to the school routine this month by moving bedtime a little earlier each day. 2. Check with school regarding
what supplies your child will need to bring and any uniform requirements. 3. Talk to your child about school as much as possible, highlighting all of the fun things he or she will do. 4. Make a point of contacting your child’s teacher(s). Attend back to school nights or open houses to find out about class expectations and extra-curricular activities. 5. Set a strong routine as school starts. Make a habit of daily attendance and homework completion, including at least 20 minutes of reading per day.
As part of the Foundation’s early childhood development initiative, First Years First, CFGNB works with local collaboratives and programs such as the New Britain Early Childhood Collaborative, Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington, Tunxis Community College and Central CT Literacy Volunteers to increase the number of children participating in pre-K programs, train teachers, enhance curriculum and foster family literacy. Since 2005, First Years First has invested over $900,000 in grant support to these and other early childhood development programs serv-
ing the children of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. About the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain Established in 1941, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain connects donors who care with causes that matter in Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington. It does this by raising resources and developing partnerships that make a measurable improvement in the quality of life in each of these communities. Submitted by Friends of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library
Brothers Caleb and Joshua Uliasz and first grade friends Hannah Smith and Andreas Aichele display mud sculptures they created at the recent Berlin-Peck Memorial Library’s Clean Mud program. Ideal place To the editor: Again I read about the Vet-
erans Memorial Park and the skate board issue. Why doesn’t anyone mention Pistol Creek. It’s barely used, can’t say much for the upkeep during the year. Yes, it’s used by people walking, jogging etc. There is also a summer camp that uses it. Perfect place for the skate board park: plenty of useable land, plenty of parking and very few houses around
that the noise would bother people. The police do ride their quads there to make sure others do not - the property wasn’t purchased for that. I think it would be an ideal place - at least the town would be showing some type of other use for the money that was spent to purchase Pistol Creek. Ron Kokofsky Berlin

Commentary
Enough with the TV ads By Glenn Richter Well, now that primary season is over we slide right into election season, but maybe we’ll get a break from these incessant campaign ads on TV, at least for a while. Someday the social scientists will study these things as priceless documents of our public life, but right now they’re just a pain in the dupa, with precious little variation from the standard template. You know the drill: Candidate A (the good guy, the one you should vote for) is sitting on the front stoop of a regular, just-folks house . . . or else he’s in a factory (do we still have any of those?) with his shirtsleeves rolled up to demonstrate that, after all, he’s just folks, he’s one of us . . . or else she’s hobnobbing with the hoi polloi down at the senior center, just-folksing around with some other just-folks . . . or else, if he’s the incumbent, he’s sitting at his Big Official Desk in front of a way-too-big American flag . . . or else he and his wife are schlepping their adorable tots around the supermarket (because, after all, he’s just folks, he’s one of us) while other “shoppers” come up to him, uninvited, and deliver word-perfect micro-speeches on Medicare and/or Social Security and/or taxes and/or the economy, calling him by his first name because, after all, he’s just folks, he’s one of
us. And then Candidate A mentions “my opponent” (the evil Candidate B, the one you should definitely not vote for). The camera moves in for a close-up. The expression on Candidate A’s face, already alarmingly sincere, turns more so, if that’s even possible, as he stares into the camera, and thus into your soul: “Candidate B has called me a doo-doo head. Well, I’m not a doo-doo head. It’s just that I’ve been fighting so hard for you and your family (in Hartford or Washington) that I may, at times, look like a doodoo head. But it’s a wellknown fact that Candidate B is a poo-poo face. Why, in the fifth grade he once pushed Mary Ellen Rogers so hard that she dropped her books. And he used to cut in the lunch line. And he’s been accused of removing the labels from pillows, the kind you’re not supposed to remove. And he doesn’t close cover before striking. And he doesn’t seem to know, let alone care, that objects in mirror are closer than they appear. And he once voted for a bill that wasn’t exactly, 100 percent what he wanted, because it was a compromise. And — worst of all — unlike me, he hasn’t been fighting hard for you and your family (in Hartford or Washington). I’m Candidate A, and I approved this

to. I had to meet the man who had brought so much joy to my life. Mid-September of 2011, after four years, my family told me that Make-A-Wish had called and we were being sent to London to meet the man of my dreams. Within a few hours my parents, brother and I were half across the world. The whole experience was surreal. A limo picked us up at our hotel and we were taken to Pinewood Studios where
Garden Continued from page 4 etables came from and what went into the soil to grow the crops. Bigelow said a lot of supermarkets carry fruits and vegetables that carry genetically modified organisms. “It’s just not good [practice] and over all, they’re not valuable nutritional food,” she said. “The more people became aware of the benefits of fresh vegetables—community gardens have been popping up all around the state.”
Johnny was filming Dark Shadows, a movie based on the TV show of the same name. In the film he plays Barnabas Collins, a man who was cursed by a witch to spend eternity as a vampire. He was then buried for 200 years until he is accidentally unearthed in the year 1972. At the studio we were shown props from the movie by the man who created them—and someone whose work I’ve admired—David Balfour. We also had the opportunity to watch them filming next door via a monitor.
Then came the big moment. The moment I had been waiting for eight years. It was time to meet Johnny. But it wasn’t only him; Tim Burton, the director of the film and my favorite one at that, was also with him. No words could ever describe how meeting them felt. To be in the same room as the man of my dreams was unbelievable. It was magical and utterly perfect—much more than I had ever dreamed it would be. There were a couple other Make-A-Wish children, and we were able to speak
with Johnny and Tim for a while. We also had some oneon-one time with each of them. I have never been as happy as I was on that day. I spoke with Johnny about acting, and told him how much he has meant to me. It is an experience I will never forget, and has given me precious memories for a lifetime. After the day of my wish, my family had a few days to explore the City of London, with just enough time for me to fall helplessly in love with it. The foundation also sent us
to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, as well as took care of all of our expenses. After our walk among the stars, it was time to return to real life. I can never say enough good things about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Johnny Depp, Tim Burton, or Dark Shadows. It was the happiest week of my life, and I am so glad my family was able to share it with me. Dark Shadows comes to DVD on Oct. 2. For more information on the Make-A-Wish Foundation, visit http:// www.wish.org/.
In recent years at the Hatchery Brook Community Gardens, the first and third Saturday of each month was designated as “community garden workday.” Gardeners came to help laydown or fix the woodchips on the pathways between each garden, help maintain or plant shrubbery around the perimeter, or help each other with their own gardens. In 2009, the conservation commission received a grant from Fiskars, a garden tool manufacturer. That grant was used to provide some gardening tools to Hatchery Brook community garden-
ers. In additon, funds were used for shrubbery planted on the left side of the perimeter, and for perennials that line the front of the garden. This year, due to scheduling conflicts, gardeners were not able to plan workdays to plant additional shrubbery around the back and right side of the garden. “Eventually, the goal is to have gardens and shrubbery all the way around the outside perimeter to attract beneficial insects and pollinators,” said Bigelow, adding that it is good ecology for the garden’s growth.

At worst, the Founders probably feared that some brazen no-goodnik would ride into town with a barrel of booze and start buying people’s votes with free drinks. Not very dignified, maybe, but it sounds like a lot more fun than we’re going to be having from now until Nov. 6. Anyway, I’m me, and I approved this message. New veterinary hospital opens in Berlin
health notes: Keep Seasonal Sports Fun and Injury Free by Gregory Czarnecki, DO For many, Summer is often the time for recovery from year-round sports activities. For others, Summer brings sports camps, clinics and preparation for Fall competition. Staying safe and protecting yourself from injury and illness are key to continuing pain-free sports participation.

Tips for healthy sports participation Suite 1 • Gradually increase training for Fall sports. People Glastonbury, CT are excited about getting back into their fall sports; so they jump right back in with the same vigor as when the last season ended. Unfortunately, your body doesn’t retain peak performance during the off season. It's important to allow time to return to the activity by gradually increasing training duration and intensity. Conditioning during the summer can reduce the risk of injury when you return to your organized sport. • Make sure you have appropriate gear. Concussions, contusions and other injuries can be prevented by using protective gear. • Avoid heat-related injuries. While protective gear is important, remember that it can add to the risk of heat illness. In addition, limit exercise when temperatures soar. Some late Summer days are just too hot to exercise safely, especially in the mid-day. Consider training indoors with climate control or plan to exercise early in the morning or the evening. • Stay well-hydrated. Drink plenty of fluid before, during, and after your activity. For exercise that is less than one hour, water is sufficient as a replacement fluid. For longer or more intense activities, additional electrolyte replacement can help with performance and recovery. • Continue to use plenty of sunscreen and reapply it often. Recognize signs of a concussion Head injuries are serious and awareness is key. Sometimes symptoms will not appear right away, so it’s important that you remain alert to the symptoms. Call your healthcare provider immediately if you experience the following: • Headache • Neck pain • Difficulty concentrating • Easily confused
• Mood changes • Fatigue • Nausea • Loss of balance
• Blurred vision • Ringing in the ears
Hopefully your Summer and Fall will be injury-free, but if not, our sports medicine services at Hartford HealthCare’s Primary Care Network are here for you.

After 28 years, Profitt returns to Paralympic Games Berlin High School graduate eyes medal in London By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Nearly three decades after her first and only appearance in the Paralympic Games, Berlin High School alumna Tara Profitt is set to compete, once again, in the gathering of the world’s top physically-disabled athletes. The 2012 Summer Paralympics will be held Aug. 29 to Sept. 9 in London, England, and Profitt, a member of the United States table tennis team, is eager to get down to business. “It would be great to medal there since I didn’t accomplish that back in 1984,” she said. “It would be great to do that.” Profitt’s return to the Paralympics after 28 years has not gone unnoticed by the media. The 47-year-old was featured
recently in segments on two local television networks. Sports writers have been calling as well. Profitt’s story is one of determination and grit. The wheelchair-bound athlete, paralyzed from the neck down, and without the use of her fingers, competes with the table tennis paddle strapped to her hand. She headed into this year ranked 12th in the world in her class. “A lot of feedback I’ve gotten from people is that ‘it’s such an inspirational story,’ or ‘we wish more people looked at life the way you do,’” said Profitt, of Newington. “I don’t think of myself as an inspiration, but if I inspire some other people, it makes me happy.”
‘Every day is a blessing because you never know if you’re going to have tomorrow,’ said two-time Paralympian Tara Profitt, a Berlin High School alumna. ‘So stay See Profitt, page 31 positive, fight hard and live life to the fullest.’
Carasiti takes first step on road to the majors
Berlin High School alumnus Matt Carasiti, pictured in action at St. John’s University, is now a professional pitcher. The rookie has turned in good work for the Grand Junction Rockies this season. At press time, Carasiti owned a record of 3-2.
By Mark Pukalo Special to The Citizen It all didn’t fully hit Matt Carasiti until he arrived in Grand Junction, a city in Western Colorado surrounded by mountains and desert. The former Berlin High pitching standout was beginning his professional baseball career. “It’s completely different than anywhere I’ve ever been,” said Carasiti, a sixthround pick of the Colorado Rockies June 5. “But once I started to pitch, it’s just like playing in the backyard. It’s really been fun for me. I’m having a great time.” And, Carasiti is making strides. In 10 starts, Carasiti was 3-2 and sported a 4.04 earned-run average in 49 innings of work with the Grand Junction Rockies of the rookie Pioneer League, his first stop on the way to what he hopes can be a major league baseball career. The batters are more ag-
gressive, more talented and are less likely to let you get away with a bad pitch. Carasiti is learning and adjusting every day. After helping St. John’s to their deepest run in the NCAA tournament since 1980 as a junior this past spring, the right hander took some time off from throwing before getting to Colorado. “I was a little rusty the first two outings,” said Carasiti, who allowed 13 hits in his first 7 2/3 innings. “Then I kind of put it together.” Carasiti gave up just seven earned runs in his next six starts, totaling 33 innings. In two straight outings against Missoula Osprey July 13 and 19, Carasiti allowed just six hits and no runs in 13 innings. Grand Junction pitching coach Ryan Kibler said Carasiti had some issues with controlling his fastball early on, but was receptive to making adjustments that have helped him keep the ball down and get ahead in the count.
Kibler likes Carasiti’s competitiveness and his willingness to learn. “You look at his face and you can tell he is all business,” said the coach. “That’s a great place to start when it comes to coaching a young athlete. Guys like that are a dream to work with.” Carasiti was both a starter and a closer for St. John’s. Kibler said he sees the 6 foot 3, 205-pound Carasiti as a starter, with three or four plus pitches. The versatility should be a positive for Carasiti going forward, but the hurler said the biggest thing he has learned in his first few months as a pro is the stress the increased schedule puts on his arm. Instead of 94, 95, sometimes 96 miles per hour, he is more around 92-94. “But I think I’m learning how to pitch more now,” Carasiti said. “I’m learning se-

Court of Appeals weighs in on cheerleading debate By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
The long-debated question “is cheerleading a sport?” received a definitive answer recently. A federal appeals court has ruled that competitive cheerleading is not a sport. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill, who found in 2010 that competitive cheerleading cannot – at least not yet – be considered a varsity sport under Title IX, the 1972 federal law that requires equal opportunities for men and women in academics. “Competitive cheer may, sometime in the future, qualify as a sport under Title IX,” Underhill wrote. “Today, however, the activity is still too underdeveloped and disorganized to be treated as offering genuine varsity athletic participation opportunities for students.” Underhill’s ruling came after five members of the Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team and their coach sued QU when it was announced that the Hamden university would eliminate its women’s volleyball program for budgetary reasons. To comply with Title IX, QU planned to replace
women’s volleyball with a less expensive team — competitive cheerleading. The suit brought by the QU volleyball players and coach argued that move violates Title IX, and Judge Underhill agreed. “I hold that the University’s competitive cheerleading team does not qualify as a varsity sport for the purposes of Title IX, and, therefore, its members may not be counted as athletic participants,” Underhill wrote in his decision. For an activity to be considered a sport under Title IX, it must have coaches, practices, competitions during a defined season and a governing organization. The activity must also have competition as its primary goal – not merely the support of other athletic teams. Of course, many people strongly disagree with the legal ruling. Matt Leidemer has seen dozens of cheerleading competitions through his work as a freelance sports photographer, and has a great appreciation for the athleticism on display at the events. “I can see where the perception that cheerleading is not a sport can come from. When you say ‘cheerleading,’ most people are going to con-
jure up the image of the girls on the sidelines of football and basketball games, chanting and going through arm motions,” Leidemer said. “But that’s not all of cheerleading. I think you need to go watch a competition and see the tumbling, the jumps, the tosses, and see that there is more to competitive cheer than the ‘rah-rah, go team go’ of sideline cheer. There is a degree of athleticism involved.” Southington High School cheer coach Heather Allenback agrees. “No one argues that it is a highly athletic activity with elements that must be included – skills, etcetera – that are

sports, and I can appreciate the fitness and athleticism that goes into it, but it’s not a ‘game’ per se.” Another commented: “What they do is amazing, but it shouldn’t count as a sport.” Other Citizen Facebook followers had a different take on the subject. “I absolutely think it is a sport,” wrote the mother of an 8-year-old cheerleader. “The girls do all kinds of conditioning, and practice just as long and hard as the football players they cheer for. They cheer at games, but they also compete against other cheer squads, just as gymnasts compete against each other. I’m not sure what else they would have to do to be considered athletes!” Another poster believes she knows why the court shot down the idea that competitive cheerleading is a sport. “I’ll tell you the reasoning!,” she wrote. “They’re frustrated jocks!”

judged somewhat objectively with a rubric, but inevitably includes subjective assessment. It’s like diving, ice skating or gymnastics,” said Allenback. “The difficulty comes in judging the team as a whole. As a sport, cheer just isn’t set universally, with consistency and standards. I suspect, however, that you will see movement towards a gymnastics-cheer competitive movement in the next 10 years.” At the end of the day, Allenback is unfazed by the legal ruling. “Again, this decision doesn’t bother me,” she said. “It’s not saying that cheerleading isn’t athletic.” The question of whether or not cheerleading is a sport received a myriad of responses on Citizen Facebook pages. “I’ve read a lot on this subject, and my opinion is that cheerleading should also not count as a sport,” wrote one poster. “I understand that there are more injuries in cheerleading than in most

quences, when to go in and when to go away.” Kibler said many young pitchers’ initial mindset is to try and strike everyone out by tricking them. That can lead to high pitch counts and shorter outings. He thinks Carasiti can get a ton of ground balls when he commands his fastball. “He can average 92 [mph] every night,” Kibler said. “He doesn’t need much more velocity than that. When you command 92 in and out with the leg movement he gets with it, that’s a recipe for winning and going deep into games.” Carasiti said the host family he has lived with in Grand Junction, 247 miles from Denver and close to the Utah border, has been great. He has also enjoyed going through the first few months of his pro career with his St. John’s teammate Matt Wessinger, a shortstop who was drafted by the Rockies in the fifth round this year. It is expected Carasiti will go to Instructional League in Arizona at the conclusion of the Pioneer League season to work with all the coaches from the Rockies’ system. Carasiti said he expects to return to Berlin near the end of October. Then it’s on to the next step — Class A ball in 2013. Carasiti said he is patient. It could take three or four years, but pitching in the majors is within his sights. “That’s my goal,” Carasiti said. “I think I can do it.”
Locals of a certain age may remember Profitt – formerly Tonina – as a top-notch athlete in town. She played basketball, baseball and softball and was an accomplished swimmer. “You name the sport and I probably tried it,” she said. But Profitt’s promising athletic career was cut short when she was just 13. A diving accident on July 7, 1979 left her confined to a wheelchair. She nearly died that horrific day. “When my dad found me I was blue,” Profitt said. “He resuscitated me. And at that point I really couldn’t move anything.” Profitt soon learned she would never walk again. Despite the devastating news, the teenager did not allow herself to be encompassed by dark thoughts. “I was young,” she said. “So you figure you just have to channel all your focus in a different direction, being the best person, and finding other things you can do to replace some of your losses.” When Profitt arrived at Wright State University in Ohio in 1983 she realized that her days as an athlete were far from over. She got involved in wheelchair athletics, including table tennis,
which she took to rapidly. So rapidly in fact that she qualified for the 1984 Paralympics in Stoke Mandeville, England. After the ’84 Games, Profitt took a 20-plus year break from table tennis; she graduated college, got married, raised a child. It was not until her son, Andre, now 19, entered high school, that she picked up the paddle again. “I had a little more free time, so I figured ‘let me get back into the sport’, never figuring I would wind up going to the Paralympics again,” said Profitt, who credits her coach Roman Tinyszin with making the comeback possible. “As an athlete, before my accident, I was really instinctive. I was pretty athletic. I kind of excelled in whatever sport I chose to play. Table tennis just came right back to me. The sport is a little different now; there’s a lot of spin. But I just made the adjustments necessary.” In 2009, Profitt earned a gold medal at the Para PanAm Games in Venenzuela. She grabbed a silver at the 2011 Para Pan-Am Games in Mexico. No matter how Profitt fares in London, the experience will be joyous for her. For one, she and her husband, Matt Profitt, will celebrate their 25th wedding an-
niversary during the Games. On top of that, Profitt’s college friend, Pam Fontaine, the woman responsible for getting her into table tennis, is joining her in London. Fontaine, also confined to a wheelchair, is a member of the U.S. Paralympic table tennis team, like Profitt, for the first time since ’84. “That was quite an accomplishment for us to make it again after all these years,” said Profitt, who will compete individually and as a team with Fontaine in London. Recently, Profitt, Fontaine and fellow Paralympian Tahl Leibovitz graced the cover of U.S.A. Table Tennis Magazine. Profitt’s mother, Terry Tonina, is, understandably, filled with pride when thinking back on all that her daughter has accomplished. “It’s amazing,” Tonina said. “God has been good to
