Residents expressed overwhelming opposition to a text amendment that would pave the way for a 319-unit apartment complex on Atkins Street during a Planning and Zoning Commission public hearing on Thursday, July 11.

Earlier this summer, a bicycle was reported stolen from the train station in Berlin. The Police Department posted security images on its Facebook page and within an hour received a call, interviewed the suspect and recovered the bike.

“It’s been a great tool for us,” said Berlin Deputy Police Chief Christopher Ciuci. “And not just for criminal matters.” Cops are using social media, mainly Facebook and Twitter, to help solve crimes, inform the public about upcoming events and recognize officers.

According to a 2016 survey by the Urban Institute, the increase in police departments signing up for social media accounts began in 2010 and peaked in 2012. The institute conducts research on social and economic policy. See Police, A12

applied to 19 acres of property along Atkins Street. William Krame, principal for Rio Vista Associates LLC, said he’s committed to the concept plan shown at past hearings, in which 11 multistory buildings would be built, with housing for an estimated 487 people.
