Citizen of the Year 2010: Mark Lewandowski 9/11 memorial demonstrates outstanding vision By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
In March 2010, Mark Lewandowski joked with the Town Council that he was prone to “grandiose plans.” But despite the light note, he was completely serious about the vision he brought for-
ward: to build a local memorial in recognition of the nearly 3,000 people killed Sept. 11, 2001, including 343 firefighters involved in rescue operations Lewandowski, chief at Kensington Fire Rescue sent a grant application, to the 9/11 Family Association, requesting tons of steel, relics from Ground Zero. One intent of the 9/11 Family Association is to grant artifacts to community See Citizen, page 5

When one of her five yearold twins woke with a headache on Dec. 27, 2010, Jessica Silva gave him a pain reliever. Soon after, he said his knees hurt. Silva and her husband, Tyler, thought their son Jonathan might be experiencing growing pains. “By Wednesday he was shuffling around like a little old man and had dark circles under his eyes,” she said. “On Thursday, he had no strength in his legs and collapsed.” By the weekend, he wasn’t walking, sitting up or eating. The Silvas called an ambulance to transport their son to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford because they could not get him into the car. After a series of painful and invasive tests, including a spinal tap, doctors diagnosed Jonathan with Guillain-Barré Syndrome — a rare, but treatable autoim-
mune disease. According to the keepkidshealthy.com website, GBS occurs 0.4 to 1.7 cases per 100,000 people per year. It strikes randomly and is not genetic, which explains why Jonathan’s twin brother Alex is unaffected to date.
“For most people, it starts at the bottom and works its way up,” Jessica Silva said. In addition to muscle weakness, symptoms may include numbness, tingling, and difficulty walking,

The Berlin Citizen — Thursday, January 27, 2011
A classroom at Berlin High School has been closed due to serious water leakage from snow and ice build up on the roof. It was the second time this school year that the room had experienced significant leaks. According to Principal Matthew Harnett, the room’s ceiling tiles were removed last month, before the holidays, after rain resulted in leaks. During that incident, a
few soggy tiles had fallen. Since it occurred on a Sunday, there were no concerns about injuries. However, the ceiling was removed at that time to make sure staff and students were safe. After cleaning, disinfecting and drying out the room, it was put in use again for classes. Now room 216, used for English classes, has been closed until further notice. Classes have moved to another space. “I’m not letting anyone in there,” Harnett said, citing safety concerns. The
recent siege of snow and ice, followed by warm temperatures and melting, has triggered more leakage, this time to a point where the room is no longer useable. Because of hazardous conditions, it’s not possible to get up on the roof to clear it, he said. “It’s frustrating,” Harnett said, adding that there are also a couple of smaller leaks in the band room. He said the leaks are occurring in parts of the building that are part of its original construction.

The Lamentation society, helped launch a new author last month when it hosted a discussion with Jonathan Westbrook. His 2010 book, A Legend in Time, is based on the legend of Lake Pocotopaug. The discussion, and author’s debut, was held at Angelico’s Lakehouse restaurant near Pocotopaug as a way to increase interest in the book and author. At least 65 people attended an “unheard of turnout for a brand new unknown author,” Young said. “Being a well read group, we naturally progressed to discussing our literary opinions and choosing books with a ‘destination’ discussion location,” Young said of the venue. The event was mentioned on Faith Middleton’s NPR Book Show and that helped spur interest, too. Westbrook and restaurant

Enjoy winter activities at Hungerford Park museum By Karen Brancato Special to The Citizen
Have you taken your kids to Hungerford Park recently? If it’s been a while since you visited the indoor and outdoor animals or walked the nature trails, some events are coming up which may reignite your interest. Donna Veach is director of marketing and special events for the New Britain Youth Museum, with locations at Hungerford Park, 191 Farm-
ington Ave., and at 30 High St. New Britain. She provided the scoop on all the exciting happenings planned for the next few months. The annual Italian Night will take place on Friday, Jan. 28, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. “We did the same pasta night for about 22 years. Then we stopped for a couple of years,” Veach said. Then, three years ago the organization changed it up a bit, and the result was “wow.” This popular event typi-

Fire crews have been clearing snow and ice from around hydrants in town, but much more work is needed, says Chief Mark Lewandowski of Kensington Fire Rescue. The recent storm has buried hydrants and it’s likely some won’t be visible until spring, he said. In the meantime, fire departments, are asking the public to provide assistance in identifying and clearing hydrants. Lewandowski said many hydrants are still under piles of snow.

CL&P, Yankee Gas offer grants to FIRST Robotics
There is no cure for GBS, but Jonathan receives intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatments to suppress the disease. Roughly 80 percent of GBS patients regain full function, according to keepkidshealthy.com. For some, varying levels of weakness will remain and there is always a chance of relapse. Once they knew the cause of Jonathan’s paralysis, the Silva’s next challenge was explaining it to their son. Tyler Silva used a few of Jonathan’s stuffed animals to explain what his body is doing.

High school students in Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and Yankee Gas service territories competing in the upcoming 2011 Connecticut FIRST Robotics Competition can apply for grants to help fund their entries, thanks to CL&P and Yankee Gas. A total of $15,000 is available. Winning teams will be eligible for grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 each. “I am very proud that once again, we are stepping up and supporting Connecticut FIRST,” said Jeff Butler, president and chief operating officer, CL&P. “They know how to make science and learning fun and the competition is just as exciting for spectators as it is for the students.” Applications for the CL&P/Yankee Gas grants are available at www.clp.com/Home/Community/Fi rst.aspx. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Feb. 1. Winning teams will be notified by Feb. 22. Over 1,500 high school students are expected to compete in the 2011 Connecticut FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, March 31 - April 2 at Hartford’s Connecticut Convention Center.
Jonathan and Alex Silva are twins. The whole family is pitching in to help Jonathan get better.
money to cover expenses the Silvas’ medical insurance does not. While Tyler Silva is returning to work gradually, Jessica Silva is on leave from her part-time job. “I don’t even know how to thank people who have been
so generous,” she said, also acknowledging the help they received from their children’s pediatrician Matteo Loprieato and the hospital staff. “There are not enough words to explain how appreciative we are.”

breathing and swallowing. The longer the condition goes undetected, the more serious the consequences. “If it reaches the lungs, you can’t breathe,” she said. Fortunately, the doctors were able to stop the rapid progression in Jonathan’s system. His paralysis remains below the waist. “He’s 30 to 40 percent better, as of now,” Silva said, discussing the situation from her son’s hospital bedside last week. Rather than set a date for recovery, the doctors have set physical goals. “Jonathan will go home when he can bear weight on his legs and walk,” she said.
Jessica Silva remains strong and positive on the road to her son’s recovery. The initial tests were the hardest part of the journey. “I knew they had to do it and there was no other way, but it was just too hard to see his little body go through that,” she said. Now that there is a diagnosis, Silva stays focused on the plan of treatment. She also wants to spread awareness of GBS, which occurs more commonly in adults. “Being younger, Jonathan has the ability to bounce back faster,” she said. However, GBS often goes undiagnosed longer in adults, or misdiagnosed as arthritis, for example. While Jonathan recovers, the Silvas want to keep life as normal as possible for their other son. Grandparents Robert and Susan D’Ambrosio help maintain Alex’s routine. This includes attending kindergarten at Hubbard Elementary School, where classmates in Samantha Bell’s class have made a banner and cards for Jonathan. In addition to meals, prayers and well wishes, some people have donated

Anna T. (Vecchione) Roche, 96, of Whitinsville, M a s s . , known to her loving family as “Nonnon,” died peacefully on Jan. 13, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph T. Roche, to whom she was married for nearly 50 years. She is survived by three children and their families: her daughters, Carol Virostek and husband Paul of Berlin, Kathleen McCarthy and husband George of Whitinsville, and her son, Joseph T. Roche, Jr. of Holly Hill, Fla.; her eight grandchildren, Allison (Virostek) Hopkins and husband Charles, Leslie Virostek and husband John Cobb, Daniel McCarthy and wife Jodi, Timothy McCarthy and wife Elizabeth, Sarah (McCarthy) Lamoreaux and husband Daniel, and Jessica, Barbara, and Joseph T. Roche III; and her 13 great-grandchildren, Zachary and Isaac Pfosi, Aidan, Elise, and Aileen Cobb, Alexis Gentry, Connor and Kyle McCarthy, Parker and Clara McCarthy, Annabella and Lea Lamoreaux, and Joseph T. Roche IV. “Annie” was born in 1914 in Douglas, Mass. to the late Maria (Saviano) and Salvatore Vecchione and grew up in a large Italian family. She graduated from Douglas High and for decades was a communicant of St. Denis Parish, where she and her husband married in 1938, and where she was an active member of the St. Anne Society and the Catholic Women’s Council. A member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Whitinsville since 1966, she taught CCD classes, sang in the choir, and for many years worked on the bereavement committee. The Church and prayer were central to her life, especially her devotion to the Blessed Mother. When her husband died in 1986, her faith sustained her. Even to the end of her life her caregivers brought her to daily Mass in the chapel of St. Camillus Health Center, her
final home. Known for her beautiful smile, impeccable sense of style, and generous heart, she made a host of friends during her long lifetime. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, spending time with her sisters, working as a salesperson at the former Louis Fashion Shop in Whitinsville, and rooting for the Celtics. With her husband she loved dancing and traveling, and she had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. An expert seamstress, Anne instructed girls in the 4-H Club and Girl Scouts and also taught adult education classes in Douglas and at Worcester Trade School. She took great pride in her creations, especially in designing and making original wedding gowns for her daughters. Anne was predeceased by her brothers Felix, Joseph, Angelo, and James, and her sisters Philomene (Fannie) Yacino and Pasqualine (Pat) Chiras. She is survived by her sisters Vincentia (Vinny) Limanek and Mary Wallace and husband Thomas, and many other relatives and friends. The family will be forever grateful to the staff at St

CitizenOpinion Letters to the Editor
High school logic
To the Editor: Let me get this straight, 1.) Go with a $25 million proposal, completely out-of-pocket (no reimbursement from state) that addresses approximately eight percent of the Berlin High School building structure by adding some additional classrooms, HVAC system and updating a few exisiting rooms as well as not fully guaranteeing that all New England Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation issues are resolved while increasing our future taxes only to be increased further in the future with further updates and bonding. Or 2.) Go with a “renovate as new” $70 million project on the entire building structure now (currently approx. 60 years or 30 years old depending on limited update done in late 70’s), that will: guarantee resolution to all NEASC accreditation issues;
be subject to state reimbursement bringing final cost to around $47 million; propel state-of-the-art learning structure for the future; maintain and stabilize property values; and attract potential new residents with families. To me it seems very illogical, to duct tape an issue now — only to address it later in the future. If not fully addressed now, when? Based on the state reimbursement factor on the entire structure, low interest rates and reasonable property tax projection increases, in my opinion is seems very logical to “renovate as new” now as this building is literally falling apart. Todd Braun Berlin
Middle ground To the Editor: I want to thank Scott Veley for the math lesson in his Letter to the Editor last
week. Interesting that he did not correct Richard Rampone’s letter as well; Richard did some serious rounding down (he used $69 million as the cost of the high school renovation plan). I can’t argue with the fact that the total project cost has been reduced from $83,233,100 to $69,939,227, a 15.97 percent reduction. But we should not forget that the original plan was “a wish list.” Of the reductions: $2 million was eliminating the alternative energy allowance; $1,496,250 from eliminating new/enhanced fields; and $2,436,165 in contingency. So 45 percent of the reduction happened in a couple minutes. This means it took six months to find the remaining reductions. We need to get this project approved and underway as evidenced by the ceiling collapse this past week. But the plan needs to be reSee Letters, next page

Look past price tag to understand real cost to fix BHS By Bill Rasmussen Special to The Citizen The town of Berlin will soon vote on whether or not to approve funding for a complete renovation of Berlin High S c h o o l . Rasmussen Everyone agrees that the high school must be renovated. However, there is much debate on whether or not to do a “partial renovation” or “renovate as new”. “Partial renovation” addresses the immediate and most pressing needs of the high school. The town of Berlin would pay almost 90 percent of the cost for a “partial renovation”. This approach is perceived to be the least expensive way to address the immediate needs of the high school. However, it is important to remember that parts of the high school were originally constructed in

1953. Over the next 25 years it is likely that there will be a need to complete other “partial renovations” to upgrade the high school. “Renovate as new” is a complete and total renovation of the high school. The town of Berlin would pay $47 million of the $69 million cost for “renovate as new”. “Renovate as new” is perceived to be a more expensive approach to addressing the immediate needs of the high school. However, the entire school will be “renovated as new”. In effect, a 60 year-old building becomes a new school; thereby addressing the needs of the high school for the next 25 years. The ultimate cost associated with each approach to addressing the needs of the high school must be measured over the long term. Currently, reimbursement rates for “renovate as new” are favorable. Interest rates are at historic lows; which creates a favorable environment for bonding. Construction costs are also favorable due to the competitive bidding environment in a difficult economy. There is virtually no reimbursement for “partial renovation”. More importantly, if we choose to do a “partial renovation” we lose the opportunity to take advantage of the reimbursement rates currently available through the “renovate as new” approach, thereby making “partial renovation” the only option for fixing the high school in the foreseeable future. Making a prudent financial decision regarding the renovation of Berlin High School is more than looking at a price tag and saying it costs too much. Being fiscally responsible is also about putting the total cost of renova-

Berlin Relay for Life celebrates with an “unbirthday” launch party The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Berlin 2011 officially gets underway when volunteers, cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and family members gather at Pine Loft Restaurant, 1474 Berlin Turnpike in Berlin on Monday, Feb. 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The American Cancer Society is known as the Official Sponsor of Birthdays®. This year, Berlin is celebrating unbirthdays like the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass and in the movie, Alice in Wonderland. “With our “Unbirthday” theme, we don’t have to wait for a real birthday to celebrate because every day is a day that is not someone’s birthday — it’s an unbirthday,” said Lynn Kipphut, community executive, development, ACS. The unbirthday theme was Katherine

Get the full story To the Editor: Let’s get the facts straight. The town agrees that Berlin High School must be modified in order to 1) correct accreditation violations and 2) be brought up to the current fire codes and Americans with Disabilities requirements. But the town is divided on how to make these changes. One group believes we should only make the changes need-
The Berlin train station enhancement project was the subject of a meeting earlier this week to discuss a possible rehabilitation to the existing Amtrak station as well as the state-owned site. Construction costs are estimated to be about $1.8 million. The Federal Highway Administration will provide 80 percent of the funds with the town providing the rest through Small Town Economic Assistance grants from the state. For more information or to provide input contact Jim Mahoney, development director, or Arthur Simonian, town engineer, at Town Hall, Room 8.

Completing future “partial renovations” without any financial reimbursement from the state of Connecticut also comes with a price tag and could prove to be more expensive over the long term than a “renovate as new” approach.

These changes would only modify eight percent of the school. Another group wants to make the above changes, add the science wing, and also “renovate as new“, the entire school. This is estimated to cost the town $47 million; that is $69 million minus the state reimbursement of $22 million — and 100 percent of the school would be modified. Knowing the situation of the current economy, the first option sounds like a better plan. But that’s not the full story. The high school is 59 years old. A majority of the school’s systems are way past their expected lives. The HVAC system will need to be replaced soon and will cost the tax payers $10 million and that project will not be eligible for state reimburse-
ment. Can someone explain to me why we wouldn’t want to take the state’s $22 million, add it to our $42 million, to renovate 100 percent of the school — yet we’re willing to pay $25 million right out of our pockets to modify only eight percent? With high state and federal deficits this reimbursement is sure to go down or become non-existent. Interest rates and construction costs are at historical lows right now. Do we want another McGee where students were evacuated four times because of unidentified fumes? The town quickly approved a $7 million project to replace the roof and HVAC. Still, people asked, “Why didn’t you do something about it before it got this bad?” Sue Kozlowski Berlin
Ultimately, we as taxpayers will decide whether we are willing to risk bearing 100 percent of the cost for current proposed and future required “partial renovations”. Or whether we are willing to bear the cost of “renovate as new” and bring a significant amount of our own tax dollars back to Berlin in the form of state reimbursement to help pay for the cost of “renovate as
new”. I encourage everyone to make an informed decision regarding the renovation of Berlin High School. I encourage everyone to ignore political rhetoric which is factually misguided, inaccurate and misleading. Most importantly, I encourage everyone to vote. (Bill Rasmussen is a member of the Town Council.)

Screenings are conducted on the second Tuesday of each month in Wethersfield and the fourth Tuesday of each month in Rocky Hill. Residents of all four health district towns are invited to participate at the location of their choice. The February glucose screenings are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pitkin Community Center, 30 Greenfield St.

Berlin finished the first half of the regular season with a frustrating 47-45 overtime loss at Middletown, playing a large portion of the game without leading scorer Max DeLorenzo. DeLorenzo, averaging 19.4 points and 7.5 rebounds, scored 14 in the first quarter as the Redcoats (7-3) jumped to a 20-11 lead. “He was unstoppable,” Berlin coach Mike Veneziano said. Middletown hit two straight 3s, one at the end the first and one to start the second, to close within three and then DeLorenzo (20 points) picked up his third foul in a 70-second span. The 6-foot senior sat the rest of the second and was called for his fourth foul two minutes into the third quarter. He went to the bench again. “I was proud of the kids,”

Heading into this week, Berlin High School senior Max DeLorenzo was just a few baskets shy of career-point No. 1,000. Veneziano said. “We didn’t have one of our better shooting nights, but they fought
for 36 minutes.” Berlin tried to pound it inside and just couldn’t get
shots to go down. But Kevin Stritch hit a 3-pointer with one minute left in regulation to tie the game. Veneziano said Mike Rector led the defense. The Redcoats took a twopoint lead in OT, but it just wasn’t to be this night. The loss stung, but the first half of the season has not been a disappointment. With the loss of guard Richie Conway, who transferred, and the football players coming in late, the Redcoats have gotten the job done. “Before the season, I definitely would have taken 7-3,” Veneziano said. “They play tough. These kids don’t want to be 8-12. They want to win 13, 14 games or more and win some tournament games. That’s their attitude.” DeLorenzo, who will play football at UConn on scholarship in the fall, has had a big first half for the Redcoats and at press time was 14 points away from becoming the fourth Berlin player to reach 1,000 points for his career. He also has a chance to grab his 500th rebound before he is done. Veneziano said what’s even more impressive is how
Szczepanik making the most of senior year Berlin qualifies for tourney By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
For Jess Szczepanik, being a year behind — arguably — the best girls basketball class to come through Berlin High School meant she would have to wait patiently for her chance to shine on the court. As the BHS girls hoop class of 2010 led the Lady Redcoats to conference titles, and deep into the state tournament, Szczepanik bided her time. “Clearly, that built character,” Berlin coach Sheila King said, pointing out that, now, Szczepanik is “our
strong point.” Heading into this week, the senior inside player was averaging more than seven points and nearly six rebounds per-game. Also, she had made 13 steals and was shooting a solid 41 percent from the floor. “She gives us so much each night,” King said of Szczepanik, a team captain. “Clearly, she’s our most improved player.” With Szczepanik pulling a sizeable portion of the load, the Lady Redcoats have stayed competitive this winter, despite graduating four starters.
Monday night, Szczepanik scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help Berlin knock off visiting Middletown, 61-45. Monique St. Jarre led the home team with 12 points and 10 boards. The Lady Redcoats improved to 8-5 with the win, which qualified them for the postseason. Realistically, Berlin could have 10 or 11 wins under its belt at this point. The locals have not lost by more than seven points this season. “We’re looking forward to the second half of the season and getting some wins we
should have grabbed in the first half,” King said. Their offense is “a work in progress,” according to King, so the Lady Redcoats have relied on defense to win games.

difficult it is to find a guard or small forward in the state who has put up the numbers DeLorenzo has when basketball is his second sport. “He picks up a basketball after football,” Veneziano said. “He plays for three months. It’s pretty amazing. It’s not like he’s a 6-8 kid that just posts people up.” Veneziano said DeLorenzo’s shot selection is outstanding. He draws defenders and sets up teammates. “He’s so versatile that he’s hard for other teams to match up against,” Veneziano said. “If you play a box-and-one on him with a bigger guy he’s going to get by him. If you put a smaller guy on him, he’s going to use his strength.” Berlin will need DeLorenzo to shine this week. The Redcoats hosted a big Farmington team after press time Tuesday and travel to undefeated Maloney Friday. Berlin lost to Maloney at home 60-46 back on Dec. 20. “We have a tough stretch now, but I think these kids are ready,” Veneziano said. “They’re not going to give up, no matter what the situation is.”

Parafati: Assistant Soccer Coach of the Year By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
The work junior varsity coaches put in is seldom recognized, or appreciated. So when a JV head man gets statewide recognition, the coach has done something special. Berlin High School’s Sal Parafati fits that bill.
Coming off an undefeated 13-0-3 campaign, Parafati has been named Connecticut’s Assistant Soccer Coach of the Year for 2010. “This award caps off what was truly an incredible season,” Parafati said, pointing out the BHS varsity team’s first ever state semifinal appearance. “And then to have this
recognition from my peers is really special. It’s an unbelievable honor and undeniably something I will never forget.” Parafati is the definition of a ‘soccer guy.’ He is passionate about the sport, and has been since childhood. “My wife would definitely tell you that I am happiest when I’m on the soccer field,

and I have to agree. I really love this game,” he said. “When I teach something in practice and I see my players take what they have learned and apply it in a game, there is no better feeling than that. It gives me an amazing sense of accomplishment and pride to see my players succeed.” Parafati has assisted Dave Francalangia the past 11 years. The longtime friends were soccer teammates at BHS in the 90s. The duo still competes together in winter leagues. “He has a tough job,” Francalangia said of his right hand man. “He has to get kids varsity-prepared, and he’s done a remarkable job.” Francalangia is impressed with Parafati’s ability to connect with players. “Sal is more than a coach

to these kids. Kids will often call both of us when they have graduated from high school or college to check in on the team or to ask us for advice,” Francalangia said. “We have developed a familytype atmosphere here that extends beyond the students’ four years of high school. Without Sal’s presence, patience, understanding of the game, and caring, it would be a lot harder to accomplish this one aspect of our team.” Some junior varsity coaches view their position as a stepping stone to a more high-profile job. Parafati doesn’t. “I am really happy in my supporting role,” he said. “I credit much of that to the friendship I have with Dave. When it comes to soccer, we can read each other’s minds. In our playing days, he was the first person I’d look to pass to, and that successful collaboration has carried over to our coaching.” “If the opportunity to be a head coach arises, I may entertain the idea, but in all honesty, it will be very difficult to leave here,” Parafati continued. “I love coaching in this town, and I am very proud of what this soccer program has accomplished. I have built many lasting friendships with ex-players and parents and it would be a little strange to picture myself coaching anywhere else.”

After a couple of shaky seasons, the Berlin High School wrestling program appears to be on the ascent. Last week the Redcoats knocked off Bristol Central for the first time in Coach Dave Tremblay’s three years at BHS, and followed up that performance with a strong second-place showing at the Eagle Classic. The win over Bristol Central kept Berlin undefeated in the Central Connecticut Conference South Division. Tremblay praised his guys’ heart and determination. “Last year the kids had to go through a streak where we had 10 kids on the team. We forfeited a lot of matches. But they always stayed positive,” Tremblay said. “And the new kids have seen that attitude our older kids have.” The Redcoats’ stick-toitiveness was on display against Bristol Central. Berlin trailed by 30 points that night before staging a comeback. A win by freshman Richie Schlichting in the final match — 112 pounds — gave the locals the improbable victory. “The kids just kept coming back, kept fighting,” said Tremblay. “They didn’t get negative. They just kept clawing back and clawing back.” Berlin rolled up 172 points at the 21-team Eagle Classic to finish three points behind first-place South Windsor. The Redcoats crowned three individual champions at the Eagle Classic. Mason Powers claimed the title at 215, Anthony Squiteri was the champ at 160 and Ethan Greider bested the 103-pound field. Heading into this week, Powers, a senior, was undefeated. “He’s a great kid. He wrestles hard. He doesn’t back down from any challenge put in front of him. And he’s al-
ways trying to get better. He’s one of those no-excuse kids,” Tremblay said of Powers, who finished second at 215 at
