Tree removal set to begin By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
Berlin Public Works is ready to take residents’ Christmas trees off their hands, and are also prepared for more winter weather. A town-wide tree collection will begin the week of Jan. 11. Trees will be picked up curbside on regular trash days, and all decorations should be removed, of course. “It hasn’t been a problem in the past but occasionally ornaments here and there are left on,” said Deputy Director See Trees / Page A2
The Berlin Police Department has added James Monthei to its team of officers. The 26-year-old was welcomed aboard at a Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, swearing-in ceremony, where he was presented a badge by Chief Paul Fitzgerald. Monthei won’t be out patrolling the town just yet though. First he has to complete more than six months at the Connecticut Police Academy. His time there will be demanding, Deputy John Klett said. “I have to learn about dealing with crime and dealing with people in a different fashion than what I’m used to,” Monthei said. Monthei worked as a paramedic for Hunter’s Ambulance for five years before applying to be an officer. He believes his time with Hunter’s was great preparation for his new job. “I know how to direct people and complete what needs to

A Meriden resident, originally from Wallingford, Monthei said he is excited to become part of the Berlin community. In fact, Berlin was the first department he applied to. “Hunter’s covered Berlin, so I am familiar with the town,” he said. “I find the citizens to be nice and hardworking, overall.” The skills that Monthei will be expected to acquire in the academy include; knowledge of the
law, self-defense tactics, driving cruisers, and many other critical elements of policing. “This is definitely night and day compared to what I was doing,” Monthei said. But there are some aspects of the job Monthei already has grasped. His time as a paramedic puts him ahead of other officers at the academy who have just been introduced to EMT training. From that experience he realized how many parents of students do not vote. “I feel it is important for the BOE to engage parents more in the budget process,” he said. “There is so much at stake with the kids’ education.” In his seat on the BOE, Rasmussen said he plans to work with the other members to make sure students in town continue to have a quality education. “I am looking forward to serving the town of Berlin again,” he said.

Residents are being reminded to keep the sidewalk in front of their home clear and safe. Sidewalks and walkways are to be cleared and/or sanded within 24 hours of street plowing. Also, parking bans go into effect when there is an accumulation of four or more inches of snow. Any vehicle not moved during the ban will be towed. The parking bans will end eight hours or more after a snowstorm, or by the direction of Public Works. For more information visit www.town.berlin.ct.us/.

Discussion swirls around Acura dealership By Ashley Kus
The Berlin Citizen
Increased traffic has been raised as a concern as Berlin prepares for a new Acura dealership. The current Acura building is on Webster Square Road, but if the dealership gets approved it will relocate to 244-256 Berlin Turnpike. Several public hearings have been held in regards to the dealership be-
ing constructed. The issue of traffic at the intersection of Deming and Episcopal road has been an ongoing topic of discussion. At the Police Commission meeting, Wednesday, Dec. 16, the commissioners and Chief Paul Fitzgerald looked over the lot plans for the dealership and retail space. They also looked over the traffic officer’s report, which highlighted concerns with the
intersection. The commissioners agreed with the findings of the report that Episcopal Road for Acura access should be closed until John Orsini, the applicant and Chief Executive Officer of Executive Auto Group, is able to coordinate a traffic light with the state. Discussion continued at the Planning and Zoning commission meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17, as part of
a public hearing. Orsini and his attorney, as well as two engineers, were present to discuss the plans. Attorney Dennis Cenevia explained that the 29,000 square foot dealership and accompanying 17,000 square foot commercial building would have more than 180 parking places. One of the engineers, Corey Garrow, mentioned the corresponding traffic study which stated that peak hours were
determined to be 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.; 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Garrow concluded there would be “no adverse impact from the traffic.” He added that the project did not meet state requirements for a major traffic generator. The only thing he said would need state approval would be the

LOCAL ‘ELF’ SINGS FOR VETERANS Tyler Ciaffaglione, 5, of Kensington, led veterans in the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “America the Beautiful” at the recent Christmas Shops at the VA Hospital in Rocky Hill. The purpose of the Christmas Shops is to allow veterans to chose gifts for their families and loved ones. Members in units across Connecticut raise money to purchase merchandise for the shops. What makes Tyler’s performance more special is that the youngster was born with severe hearing loss. However, by the magic of music, Tyler learned to speak and sing.

Letters to the Editor Terrific representative To the editor: I take issue with Mr. Veley’s and Ms. Reilly’s letters questioning the patriotism of Joe Aresimowicz; a veteran who served our country to protect us and the freedoms that we enjoy. State Rep. Joe Aresimowicz has done a terrific job representing this community and I thank him for both his military service and his legislative service. Maggie Morelli Berlin

To the editor: It was recently announced that UConn is raising the cost of in-state tuition a total of 31 percent over the next four years. With student loan debt and the skyrocketing price of college at the forefront of political discussion, I find myself asking why my school is doing this? The University of Connecticut has hundreds of millions of dollars in its endowment,

and is consistently receiving more money through the fundraising activities of the UConn Foundation. Is there really no money here that can be used to help solve UConn’s financial problems and keep school affordable? Additionally, UConn’s administration is generously compensated, and in a time when both teachers and students are being asked to sacrifice, is it wrong to ask the UConn administration to sacrifice a little pay to show that we’re all in this together? Or, is it wrong to ask the state legislature to take action to ensure that our state’s flagship school is really using its massive taxpayer subsidies in a way that best benefits the students? With young people leaving the state in droves, we should be looking for ways
to keep them here, not creating more reasons for them to leave. Chris Morelli
Open your eyes To the editor: In response to Fred Jortner’s letter last week, I would like to comment. You seem to make fun of, and light of, the fact that, like most of Americans, Scott Veley is concerned about not bringing terrorism and/or terrorists onto our homeland. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what is happening in this world, and to take caution is a wise idea. If Americans are killed by terrorism in our own country, it won’t really See Letters / Page A11

Winter ordinance reminder Town of Berlin follows local ordinances that apply to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways. Property owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into or across a public street. These actions are strictly prohibited and subject to a fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code, according to the Public Works Department. Residents are responsible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk fronting along their property. All sidewalks are to be cleared and/ or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. It is the responsibility of the property owner fronting that sidewalk to make it safe
for public travel. Failure to do so may result in a fine levied against the abutting property owner. Parking bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the Director of Public Works) whenever there is an accumulation of four (4) inches or more of snow and ice on any of the streets of the town. Parking bans will terminate no sooner than eight hours after any snowstorm, or as directed by the Director of Public Works. Any vehicle left parked on the street after such parking ban has taken effect, will be towed and subject to a fine and all towing and storage charges. For more information regarding snow removal operations, call the Public Works Department at 860-828-7022.

On Friday, Jan. 1, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) visited the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford in Berlin in recognition of its work with community youth, refugees, and the wider community. Larson praised the association’s president, Dr. Reza Mansoor, for the group’s efforts to combat radicalization and promote tolerance and understanding across Connecticut. “It was an honor to join Dr. Mansoor and the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford today, as they have been powerful voices for peace and respect,” Larson said. “Recent tragedies in San Bernardino and Paris have left us all afraid, but it is crucial to remember our Muslim neighbors are important members of our community. We are a nation of immigrants, and it is our diversity and the freedoms we offer – including freedom of religion – which make our country what it is. Obituaries Charles Charamut NEWINGTON — Charles Charamut, 83, of Newington, formerly of New Britain and Berlin, beloved and adored by his children, passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at the Connecticut Hospice Center in Branford, with his children at his bedside. He was revered and admired for his long, valiant and courageous battle with multiple health issues, and he himself, poignantly deemed the journey to the Hospice Center as “his last ride”. Charles, known for his beautiful, sparkling, blue eyes, was a crafty and meticulous “hands on kind of guy”.
He was born in the original family homestead where he made his life, and was well known for tinkering in his and his families’ yards, garages and basements. He was predeceased by parents, Frank and Marianna Charamut; and by four brothers, Walter, Frank, Joseph and Edward. Charles, or Charlie as everyone knew him, had an exemplary work ethic, and was an expert “heavy equipment mechanic”, routinely sought after for detailed and meticulous work, at H.O. Penn Machinery Company where he was employed for 43 years, never missing a day of work. He was an avid hiker, lover of nature, and world traveler following his son Charles who was stationed all over the world with the U.S. Air Force, and
vacationed with his family who hiked and camped many U.S. National Forests and National Parks. A determined and disciplined man Charles earned his GED in 2008 at the age of 72 and went on to enroll at Tunxis Community College. A devoted, genuine and authentic person, Charles dedicated his life to his adored children and their families. He is survived by his three children, his son, William Charamut and his wife, Judy, of Wethersfield, his daughter, Rebecca Charamut-Cass and her husband, Michael, of Berlin, and his son, MSgt USAF, Ret., Charles Charamut, and his wife, Damaris, of Florida. He is also survived by six grandchildren, William, Ryan and wife Danielle, Abby and
partner Kevin Shaw, and Trevor Charamut, as well as Sean and partner Kate Allen, and Briana Cass. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Jackson Charamut, and Tatum Shaw. Charles leaves behind a former wife, Beverly Symonaitis, of Berlin; beloved nieces and nephews, Ed, Joe, Sue, Chris, Mary Jane and Diane; children of his beloved best friend and brother, Ed; and a trusted best friend, of over 40 years, Howard Griswold and his wife, Mary. Charles, a proud and decorated veteran, was a Corporal in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean theatre with the 40th Infantry Division and receiving the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, a United Nations Service Medal, one Overseas Bar, a Combat Infan-
try Badge, and a National Defense Service Medal. He was especially proud of his family members who have served, and are currently serving in both the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Army. He was a proud patriot and an avid supporter of Veterans. His funeral service took place on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Paul’s Church, 485 Alling St., Kensington. He was laid to rest with military honors in Wilcox Cemetery, East Berlin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles’ name to St. Paul’s Church in Kensington. oriented, he won numerous awards for his produce displays as he worked his way up the corporate ladder. A direct and honest man, those who knew George quickly became acquainted with his strong personality, whether you wanted to or not, as he made sure you knew exactly where you stood with him, never believing in a “middle ground”. His penchant for details carried over into the select hobbies and interests he pursued. Among his favorite activities were his many trips to the Super Bowl. Not one to approach any task lightly, he sought perfection in everything from growing his massive vegetable gardens, fine tuning his famous prime rib and French onion soup
recipes, and most notably, rebuilding his classic cars. A winner of many trophies in Connecticut and Massachusetts for his beautifully restored vehicles, he rode with his motto “CHOPIT” emblazoned on his CT plates. For more than 18 years, George enjoyed relaxing at his beach house on Cape Cod without ever setting foot on the beach or in the water. He preferred the beach without sand, always saying “I can see you from my chair on the deck” when asked by his children and grandchildren to come on down. In typical Georgestyle, his favorite months at the beach were October to April, seeking the quiet and low-key atmosphere of the beach in fall and winter. In addition to his wife, he
is survived by three children and their spouses; and 10 grandchildren, Jacquelyn and Michael Sokolowski, of Berlin, Michael and Dawn Pauley, of Berlin, and Linette and Lucio Caraco, of Burlington. Papa had special nicknames for each of his grandchildren, Samuel “Sam-A-Reno“, Emma Rose “M&M“, Charles “Charlie Cool“, Lily Mae “Lily Bug“ aka “Shirley Temple“, and Jackson “Action Jackson” Sokolowski, Alexandra “Her Unique Greatness”, and Katarina “Kit Kat”, and Jonathan “Johnny Boy” Pauley, and Nicholas “Nick at Nite” and Grace “Twinkie” Caraco. He also leaves his sister-inlaw and her husband, Doris and David “Pat” DeSaulnier, of Chatham, Mass.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 5, from Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway, Berlin, followed by a funeral liturgy at St. Paul Church on Alling Street. Burial took place in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 7 Mill Brook Road, P.O. Box 909, Wilton NH 03086-0909, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908. A small group of Minutemen traveled to New Milford High School on Sunday, Dec. 13 for the Kick-Off Classic Wrestling Tournament. The group wrestled extremely well on the day, with the following finishes: Tyler Ebrahimi in his first tournament as a Mighty Mite placed second with three wins (two by pin), Bantam Maleeah Rios finished 3-1 and took home first place on a point criteria as she pinned two of her opponents, Elijah Ortiz in the Intermediate Division finished second with a 2-2 record, pulling out a third-period win in his last match to beat his opponent 5-3, and fellow Intermediate wrestler Nicky Ebrahimi won both his matches by pin to bring home a gold medal. In the afternoon, Novice wrestler Johnny Rosario won one match on the day in a six-man bracket. “We have only been wrestling for about a month and have missed numerous nights due to school activities, but they looked good as a whole and we now know some of the areas we need to work on to get better on the mat,” Minutemen coach Roger Moss said. “I liked the aggressiveness of some of our wrestlers; they went right after their opponent and won the matches. Tyler went out and won his first match ever by pin, which was awesome,” assistant coach Fred Orde added. The Minutemen traveled to Bristol Eastern for the second tournament of the young season on Sunday, Dec. 20.
