An East Berlin volunteer firefighter will be climbing the 72 floors of 4 World Trade Center in New York City for a good cause. Derek Wnuk was just 11 years old on Sept. 11, 2001. Now he wants to honor the memories of those lost in the terrorist attacks. “I remember that day every day,” he said. On Sunday, March 13, Wnuk will be among 343 firefighters who will participate in the second annual NYC Firefighter Stair Climb. Each participant will ascend the building – in full gear – in honor of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters killed on Sept. 11. The climb will also memorialize fallen first responders and military personnel. Funds raised through the event will benefit Team Red, White and Blue (RWB), an organization with a mission to connect veterans to their

BHS alum throws hat in the ring for 30th District seat The Berlin Citizen
He may still be in college, but Chris Morelli is ready to dive into politics. The UConn student (West Hartford branch) and B erlin High School graduate is seeking the Republican endorsement for State Representative in the 30th Morelli assembly district. “I really want to make a difference,” he explained. The district covers Berlin and Southington, areas that Morelli is more than familiar with. The lifelong Berlin resident, with family in Southington, is hoping to create change for his hometown and his state. One of the primary problems that the political science major plans to tackle is how to keep young people, such as his peers, in the state. He noticed that after college many young adults leave the state because of the lack of oppor-
tunities available to them. “It’s not being addressed properly at a state level,” Morelli said. With his school’s tuition increasing, Morelli plans to help make school more affordable if elected. He noted that schools should take a closer look at their spending. “I think across the board, costs should be cut for students,” he said. When he’s not studying, Morelli enjoys working out at the Powerhouse Gym and grabbing lunch at the Starlight Diner in Berlin. However, in all his years living in town he has noticed increased business vacancies. “I plan to make myself available to the Town Council, as well as the different boards and commissions to find out more specific solutions I can potentially provide in town,” he explained. It’s not only Berlin businesses that are a concern, Morelli saw General Electric’s recent exit as a result of tax increases. He added that business start-ups have also faced difficulties and haven’t been able to get off the ground. With two of the

largest tax increases in state history, Morelli believes that Connecticut should look at tax reductions. “Something needs to be done now, which is why I don’t want to wait to get involved,” he stated. Another way to boost businesses that Morelli wants the state to consider is to reform occupational licenses. He noted that the small change would make a big difference to people wanting to start a business. “We need to find ways to boost the economy,” he said. Observant and prone to research, Morelli plans to focus on what the public wants. He expressed his desire to go door-to-door and talk with people about his ideas. “I really want to hear what people have to say,” he said. The college student noted that he will try to find solutions and strategies to solve current problems. With heroin overdoses increasing an-

Berlin company faces 12 OSHA violations, $46K fine By Mary Ellen Godin
Special to The Citizen
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited a local aerospace manufacturer and repair facility with 12 violations of workplace safety standards after an investigation revealed workers were exposed to a carcinogen. The company, Budney Overhaul & Repair Ltd. Inc., has 15 business days to take corrective action, meet with OSHA, or contest the findings, and faces $46,287 in fines, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Labor. “Employees faced unknowing and needless exposure to
an occupational carcinogen as well as potential burns and fires,” Warren Simpson, OSHA’s area director in Hartford, stated. “For the health and wellbeing of its employees, Budney Overhaul and Repair must take effective and comprehensive corrective action to eliminate these hazards and prevent them from occurring again.” According to the statement, a complaint sparked an investigation at the plant on New Park Drive, where inspectors found several hazards associated with the use and presence of hexavalent chromium. The chemical compounds are known to cause cancer and “it targets the respiratory system, kid-

OSHA states the company failed to monitor exposure levels and lacked controls to reduce exposure levels, failed to train employees on potential hazards and safeguards, failed to provide protective equipment, did not require employees to remove contaminate clothing and allowed employees to enter eating and drinking areas while wearing contaminated clothing. The inspection also identified fire and burn hazards due to improper storage and disposal of flammable materials. Company representatives could not be reached for comment.
Berlin man to be sentenced in crash that killed teenager By Lauren Sievert Special to The Citizen
NEW BRITAIN — A Berlin man will be sentenced in May for a 2014 accident that killed a Cheshire teenager on Route 9. Anthony Longo, 23, of 23 Iris Way, was arrested on Aug. 21, 2015, and charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, driving under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane. Isabelle Gozzo, 19, of Cheshire, was a passenger in Longo’s car and died from injuries suffered in the crash. Longo appeared in New Britain Superior Court Feb.
23 and pleaded no contest to the second-degree manslaughter charge. A judge made a guilty finding for the charge, but the no contest plea cannot be used as evidence of guilt if a civil lawsuit is filed. The plea deal consists of 10 years in prison, suspended after four years served, followed by three years’ probation. The case was continued to May 4 for sentencing. On Dec. 13, 2014, Longo was driving on Route 9 near Exit 21 about 2:15 a.m., according to police reports. Longo told police that he had three beers earlier that night, was driving around See Sentencing / Page A7

nually, Morelli hopes to look at ways to treat addictions. Furthermore, he intends to look at medical components in the budget. “We have to be careful because we obviously want to cut spending at a state level,
but Governor Malloy is trying to cut money from mental health services,” Morelli explained. “I just don’t think that’s where we should be making cuts.” A Berlin Republican Town Committee member, Morelli hopes to restore the public’s faith in government as a state
representative.“I think people aren’t happy right now with what’s going on,” he said. “I want to listen to them and see what they can bring to the table.” The 30th assembly district seat is currently held by Democrat Joe Aresimowicz, the majority leader.

80 miles an hour, lost control and the car flipped several times, the warrant said. Police determined Longo’s car hit a utility pole and a rock wall, then rolled over multiple times, before coming to a stop in the median separating the Exit 21 on-ramp from the highway, the warrant said. Gozzo was ejected from the car during the crash. Police determined that the car was out of control over a distance of 568 feet and became airborne during a portion of the rollover, the warrant said. Both Gozzo and Longo were taken to Hartford Hospital, the warrant said, and Gozzo died several hours later.
Police spoke with a witness driving on Route 9 around the same time as the accident who estimated Longo’s car was going over 100 mph, the warrant said. Longo told police he was at a party at Central Connecticut State University and Gozzo was at a separate party on campus, the warrant said. Longo said he picked up Gozzo and left the campus shortly after 2 a.m. Police obtained a search and seizure warrant for Longo’s medical records and discovered his blood alcohol level was .154, almost twice the legal limit of .08, the warrant said. Longo also tested positive for marijuana in his system at the time of the accident, the warrant said.
Police concluded that Longo drove recklessly and his actions resulted in Gozzo’s death, the warrant said. Gozzo was a 2014 graduate of Cheshire High School. A memorial was held on the football field shortly after the accident.

commuters to use rail travel more consistently. The Meriden station in particular has been championed as the anchor to this new work, with updates to include elevated platforms on both sides of the track, an overhead pedestrian bridge, and ticket vending machines all under the umbrella of a new station. Work began on the site more than a year ago with the demolition of the former Stone Insurance Building, 88 State St., and the skeleton of this new station is starting to be visible. Bruce Olmstead, project manager for the state Department of Transportation, said that crews have been working through the first phase of work. “Work that gets the project out of the ground, including sheeting installation, footings, stem walls, and stair tower steel has been completed.” He added, “Much of the work is on the west side of the tracks but some work is on the east side.” Shortly, work will focus on demolishing the existing train platforms. In order to accommodate that in a functioning station, temporary platforms will be built next month farther south along State Street. Earlier this month, the City
Council voted unanimously to abandon a portion of Brooks Street, between State Street and the Amtrak rightof-way, about halfway up the street and just past the railroad tracks. This space will house the temporary platforms while crews work on the existing platforms. Ultimately it will be combined with the 88 State St. parcel and converted into rail passenger parking. “It’s anticipated that the closure will occur in March,” Olmstead said. City Councilor David Lowell, who chairs the Economic Development, Housing, and Zoning subcommittee of the council, said the city would maintain access to businesses on the western half of Brooks Street. “We’ll still preserve public access to properties on Brooks Street on the other side of the railroad tracks,” he said, adding, “From a flow of traffic and public use standpoint, it’s not going to have much of an effect — you’ll still be able to go down to Camp (Street) to cross over (to Colony Street). Plus eventually, the whole downtown flow is going to be modified.” Lowell was referring to a plan by city officials to restore two-way traffic flow to many streets downtown. The
plan includes improved pedestrian and bicycle access. The city recently received a nearly $3 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration to convert and update traffic signals in downtown junctures, something that was described as a “crucial step” in updating the traffic flow. Collectively, the three stations in central Connecticut — Meriden, Wallingford, and Berlin — are roughly 30 percent complete, with the expectation that they’ll be done by this November, ahead of the implementation of the new train service, Olmstead said. “The objective is to be as close to the original project completion date of November of this year,” Olmstead said in an email. “The contractor is currently exploring avenues to meet that date.” The New York-based Judlau Contracting Inc. was contracted by the state to do the work. And though Olmstead acknowledged, “Working within an operating railroad is always a challenge,” he also said, “We are excited to see the work advance and are looking forward to using the new stations with the new service for the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Line.”

The seasoned actress explained how she held the position of stage manager at the same time as playing Ethel Toffelmier, one of the gossip
ladies. “I get to talk about the town and gossip to the music man,” Gable said. She got to be in one of the more fast-paced numbers of the show, “Pick-a-Little-Talka-Little.” Though Gable noted the overall pace of the show was a challenge to keep up with. “It’s definitely hard to stay on pace with the band,” she added.

The full pit band consisted of many students who are in the high school band. This was the second year that senior Joe Pagliaruli had been part of the pit band. “I really like watching the show while playing, it’s just a really fun show,” he said. With so many different aspects going into bringing the show alive, every role was important. Senior Cole Johnson made sure the lights matched every scene. “It’s a great group of people to work with,” he said. With so many musical numbers and rapidly-changing sets, it was vital to make sure everyone worked together to make the show go off without a hitch. The show was performed at McGee, as the high school auditorium is still under construction. The Music Man played Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27.

goal is to raise $1,000. As of Thursday, Feb. 25, $495 had been generated. “It makes it extra special to get people involved,” said Wnuk, a Berlin resident with eight years of firefighting experience “I really enjoy helping and protecting my community,” he expressed. This will be Wnuk’s first time tackling the 4 World Trade Center climb and he will be the only Berlin firefighter to do so this year. Wnuk noted that he missed out on the 2015 event and was determined to attend this time around. “I’m representing Berlin,” he said. With a physically challenging climb ahead of him, Wnuk has been preparing at the gym. He’s been running on the treadmill and doing other exercises to get ready for the big day. “I’m really excited to climb with the other firefighters,” he said. Wnuk, along with his father, will be traveling to the city the day before the event. By then, he hopes to have raised his goal amount for Team RWB. However, he looks at the fundraising part as a secondary to the bigger picture. The firefighter is most looking forward to honoring the brave men and women who risked their lives to serve. The Berlin Historical Society will have a story share event Wednesday, March 16, to celebrate the Chamberlain Highway and Kensington. | Submitted
Historical society celebrates Kensington Many know Chamberlain Highway as one of the most scenic routes in Central Connecticut. On Wednesday, March 16, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive, Kensington, Berlin Historical Society will present a slide show of vintage photos chosen to inspire audience participation. This is the sixth in a series of story shares highlighting the history of neighborhoods and communities of Berlin. The focus of this session will be the Chamberlain Highway and southwestern part of town. Collective memories include family drives to Ferndale Dairy Ice Cream
Bar and to many family farms and summer vegetable stands. Fewer locals know that the road was named in honor of the prominent 19th century Chamberlain brothers, Abiram and Valentine, who regularly traveled, by horse and carriage between New Britain and Meriden for Sunday visits. In their time, and until 1935, the dirt path was known as Cat Hole Road, and the cat does not refer to the domestic variety. It was said that a wild cat, perhaps a cougar, roamed the Blue Hills and the notch approaching Meriden. Despite the loss of land to development, Berlin has successfully preserved contiguous acreage as a
network of trails for passive recreation and for wildlife habitat. Bicentennial Park, Chotkowski Farm, Kensington Orchards, Hatchery Brook, Scheer Farm and Blue Hills trails are open to all who enjoy the outdoors. Even Timberlin Golf Course provides acres of green where there might have been a patchwork quilt of houses. This area still has blueberry picking, tree and flower farming, a pussy willow stand, hay and corn fields. Meanwhile, third generation farmers are keeping agriculture alive and now there is exciting news that the old Midway Farm may soon be a vineyard.
Letters to the Editor Enough empty stores To the editor: I have lived on Meeting House Road, one block away from Kensington Gardens, for 45 years. There have been gift shops there as long as I can remember. Chris has been very kind and helpful to many seniors and widows. He has done arrangements for my husband’s cemetery plot and planted it, delivered plants, shrubs and trees, including
planting them, and he even delivered Christmas trees, not only for me but for many of my friends as well. I enjoy shopping for gifts as well. With only a garden shop, how can he compete with Stew Leonard’s or Loews – in Newington, by the way, not Berlin. There must be some way to rezone this property to allow such a small, convenient gift shop. Start thinking about the residents off the Chamberlain

was only one individual. So a death penalty sentence was a hollow pledge to the family and friends of the victims that the perpetrators would receive that punishment. Regarding this year’s state budget and previous budgets, what matters to me is making sure that we are protecting the services our community relies on, creating an economic climate that supports our local businesses, and funding our education system. Have I voted for tax increases to achieve these goals? Yes, I have. But, I have also insisted that every pro-
gram, every agency, every line-item funded by taxpayers be justified and held accountable. I have voted against the state budget during years when I was not satisfied that we were making progress in these areas. As we work this year to make changes to the governor’s proposed budget, at the forefront of my mind will be our middle class families and our most vulnerable citizens. The other accusations that have been thrown at me regarding Syrian refugees and sanctuary cities are both federal and local issues for which there is no significant role for state legislators.
With all of these issues, like with every bill that comes before us at the state capitol, I reach out to and hear from all of you throughout the process to get your thoughts, which helps me form my final decision. I believe that the desk with my name on it in the house chamber, really says “Property of the people of Berlin and Southington.” Which is why I’ve talked about all of these issues with any constituent who wrote, called, text messaged, or came over to me in places like Stop & Shop. Unfortunately, it seems that it has become politically effective to tear people
apart and only focus on the negative. I’m guessing that through Election Day no subject, personal or professional, for some, will be off limits from spin in an attempt to gain a political advantage. We have seen this all-out assault on our fellow townspeople in Berlin before. I promise that I will not participate in it. I will not respond again to negative, half-true letters to the editor in this, or any, paper, blog, or social media post. Berlin deserves better than that type of political debate. We have a great community with many dedicated people that run for office, volunteer on boards and commissions, and coach and mentor our
kids, which make our town what it is. If you want to discuss any pending legislation or issue, call me, email me, text me, grab a cup of coffee with me, come to my office hours, visit me at the capitol. That way we can have a real discussion about what is happening in our community. It is an honor and privilege to represent Berlin and Southington at the state capitol and I hope to continue to do so. Aresimowicz is a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and the current Majority Leader. He represents the 30th Assembly District of Berlin and Southington.

tended Wright State University where she participated in wheelchair basketball, track, and table tennis. In 1984, Tara qualified for the Paralympics in Stoke Mandeville, England in table tennis. After the games, she took a 20-year break from the sport to get her degree. She married Matt Profitt in 1987 and raised her son, Andre. Tara returned to table tennis in 2009 and earned a gold medal at the Para Pa-Am games in Venezuela in the team event. In 2011, she earned a silver medal in the singles event at the Para Pa-AM games in Mexico. That
year she also participated in two European tournaments, the Slovenia Open and the Dutch Open in Rotterdam. In 2012, she was ranked 12th in the world in her class and participated in the Paralympics in London. With only 12 spots open worldwide, she traveled to tournaments in Slovenia, Romania, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina to boost her worldwide ranking. She was featured on the cover of USA Table Tennis magazine in the May/June 2012 issue. Local business sets stage for win at garden show By Ashley Kus
The Berlin Citizen
Guests at the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show were treated to the unlikely display of a piano in the middle of a garden, placed there by Hillside Landscaping Co. of Berlin. Owner John Wilcox credited the piano as just another way to repurpose an old item into something new. “Our idea was that the piano was the spotlight feature on a stage,” he explained. Vines poured out of the top of the piano with a waterfall effect flowing from the keys below. Rocks surrounded the main attraction, with trees and bushes creating a perimeter around the whole thing. Wilcox, along with owner and business manager Steven Walowski, worked to make everything fit together with the help of their employees.
In fact, the idea of making something old into something new again is a main theme throughout the business itself. Wilcox detailed how they are a design-based company and like to explore different ways to create interesting landscapes. “We like to utilize materials that aren’t brand new,” he said. For Hillside Landscaping Co., planning for the show started in the fall with the main idea. Wilcox and his crew then worked to figure out how many plants were needed and the amount of Scott Walowski, John Walowski and John Wilcox of time needed to grow them. recent snow and burst of freezing temperatures, the business faced a setback right before the show. Some plants didn’t survive in the greenhouse and were not able to be used in the show. Instead, they improvised with what they had on hand to create a winning display. “We call it a ‘flower show moment’ when we have to make changes at the last minute,” Wilcox explained. With 27 years as show participants under their belt, the Berlin landscapers took home the Best Design Award. They’re no strangers to winning displays at the garden show. They took home the design award in 2001, 2004, 2008, and 2012 as well. They also won more than a few Best In Show awards. Wilcox noted that they plan to continue presenting their designs at the show each year.

Winter ordinance reminder Town of Berlin follows local ordinances that apply to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways. Property owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into or across a public street. These actions are strictly prohibited and subject to a fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code, according to the Public Works Department. Residents are responsible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk fronting along their property. All sidewalks are to be cleared and/ or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. It is the responsibility of the property owner fronting that sidewalk to make it safe
for public travel. Failure to do so may result in a fine levied against the abutting property owner. Parking bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the Director of Public Works) whenever there is an accumulation of four (4) inches or more of snow and ice on any of the streets of the town. Parking bans will terminate no sooner than eight hours after any snowstorm, or as directed by the Director of Public Works. Any vehicle left parked on the street after such parking ban has taken effect, will be towed and subject to a fine and all towing and storage charges. For more information regarding snow removal operations, call the Public Works Department at 860-828-7022.

STUDENTS AT MOCK TRIAL
Students in Saint Paul Middle School classes participated in a Mock Trial Competition sponsored by Civics First. Participants in the Mock Trial program served as lawyers or witnesses in a civil case involving an attack by a gorilla on a college basketball player. The students represented either the plaintiff college student or the defendant zoo and its owner. Through participation in the program, students engaged in the process of developing and presenting a legal case before a judge. Students learned the elements of a negligence claim and the rules of evidence. They were also given the opportunity to prepare and present opening and closing statements and to conduct direct and cross examinations of witnesses.
