A crowd of people gathered inside the lobby of the new Casa Mia at The Hawthorne, 2421 Berlin Turnpike on Sunday, Feb. 28. After months of planning and a few setbacks, the banquet facility officially opened its doors. Owner and Chef Tony Guglielmi stood in front of the Casa Mia sign overlooking the turnpike to cut the ribbon. Mayor Mark Kaczynski and Board of Education member and Economic Development Commissioner JoAnn Angelico-Stetson, were both in attendance. The long-awaited opening resulted in a full parking lot and plenty of guests for the open house. Inside, waiters offered visitors a selection of wines to enjoy with the buffet of catered food available in the main banquet room. The room, the largest of three at Casa Mia, was designed to hold up to 320 people with round dining tables

during the week, Wednesday through Saturday nights. Happy hour will also happen Monday through Friday, from 4 until 6 p.m. Casa Mia had been open a few days prior to the ribbon-cutting with people coming for lunch and dinner. Feb. 28, a shower was already taking place in one of the smaller banquet rooms on the first floor. Events had already been in full swing since December with numerous holiday parties. However, February was the first time that the whole place was open, including the Italian steakhouse restaurant and lounge. Guglielmi’s vision from the beginning was to revamp the old Hawthorne into a modern town staple with an Italian flair. The menu features Italian dishes such as, Ravioli alla Lucania which consists of beef short ribs ravioli, parmiggiano and tomato couli, in a beef broth. Sticking to the tradition of steak and seafood, the restaurant offers several selections of lob-

ster, beef, and poultry. Cold and hot appetizers are also offered. Separate lunch and dinner menus are available for corporate gatherings, as well as for showers and rehearsals. Guglielmi currently owns the Casa Mia banquet restaurants in Rocky Hill and East

Hartford. The Hawthorne has a long history in town as it was used as an inn and then a restaurant dating back as far as the 1930s until it closed in 2014. For more information or to make reservations visit: http://www.casamiact.com/ hawthorne.htm

operational budget, totaling $1,816,547. Wren looked at new debt services – the money needed to pay back the costs of town projects – and made further reductions, in the amount of $415,529. One of the major debt services was the Berlin High School renovation, along with several road improvements and new school roofs. This totaled a 13.67 percent increase in total debt services. Another primary factor that drove increases was the impact of the state’s budget. “This is just the starting point, and this is what I feel is necessary for the town to continue to provide existing services,” McNair explained. The council discussed the reductions during its meeting on Tuesday, March 1. McNair noted that, besides the Board of Education budget, which was still being reviewed, the

Galgano total town budget did not include any new services or positions. “I know there’s been a lot of hard work put into this and I’m looking at this as the starting point,” Mayor Mark Kaczynski said. “I think we have to, unfortunately, go much lower. I think we have to start learning and trying to live within our means.” The budget presented to the council by McNair was the first step in sending the complete budget to the annual public hearing. Adjustments will be made between Wednesday, March, 2, and the next meeting on Tuesday, March 15. Further changes will be made, if necessary, before sending the budget to referendum on Tuesday, April, 26. The public can view impacts to the budget, as well as see revisions made during the process by using the Dashboard tool available through the town website.

ties that are in charge of reemployment, education and rehabilitation of veterans. Among many other responsibilities, Galgano will be the primary person veterans can seek out for help. The role is new to the town, but not to Galgano, who has plenty of experience helping veterans. He is currently the veterans outreach coordinator at Middlesex Community College. A veteran himself, just last year, Galgano helped put together an American Wars walkway in Veterans Memorial Park in town. The walkway was dedicated in November, on Veterans Day. Also, he was in attendance as the co-president of the Connecticut State Veterans Memorial Board of Directors, to officially commemorate the opening of the Connecticut State Veterans Memorial in Hartford. In Berlin, Galgano was formerly a member of the Veterans Commission. And controversy swirled in January after the Town Council, now led by Republicans for the first time in more than a decade, did not reappoint Galgano, a registered Democrat, when his term was up. The Democratic councilors released a statement voicing their disappointment with this decision. Soon after, Mayor Mark Kaczynski said he had spoken with Galgano and was working on a solution. On Tuesday, March 1, Kaczynski officially

appointed Galgano as the VSCP. Galgano was in the audience and accepted the position along with the associated training offered by the state. “We appreciate your service to the country and this town,” Kaczynski stated. “We look forward to working with you.” Councilor Kristin Campanelli congratulated Galgano and added that she was pleased with how things shook out. “I’m glad we were able to come to a non-partisan decision to keep you where you belong,” she said. Councilor Brenden Luddy added that he was happy that veterans would have someone they could go to. Galgano is now working with Town Clerk Kate Wall to create a veterans service page on the town website, much like the one he built for Middlesex Community College.

Going along with the read-a-thon, McGee had a bracket last month for popular library books, with prizes given to the students who got the most choices correct. During the whole month, classmates will get to play against each other in Period 8 class basketball games. During the period, teams consisting of students in the same grade will play for a chance to be finalists and get to play against the “Dream Team” made up of McGee teachers and staff. Students will also have the opportunity to referee the games or just cheer on their peers. Midnight Madness, on Friday, March, 4 was when sixth grade teams played several night games. Last year, money was donated to the Joseph Manzi Foundation, Camp Hope, and the Salvation Army. Since 1998, when the program was started, McGee has raised over $100,000 for various charities. Resident sets out on trip of her lifetime By Barbara Helming I was invited to join friends on a recent 23-day adventure that took me around the world. This is part one of my travelogue of the trip of a lifetime. Singapore was our first destination. On Feb. 3, an evening flight of 7 hours, 35 minutes brought us to Frankfurt for breakfast and refueling. The final leg of the journey involved crossing the international dateline on a flight of 12 hours, 10 minutes to Singapore. Singapore is an island of 275.8 square miles in Southeast Asia boosting one of the two busiest container ports in the world. Surprisingly, 43.4 square miles of the island is land reclaimed from the sea. Its small size means one can drive from one side of Singapore to the other in 45 minutes. The car ride from Singapore’s Changi Airport revealed a modern city adorned with beautiful flowers and palm trees. Singapore has a population of 5.5 million and prides itself on being a very clean city. Weapons, tobacco, drugs and even chewing gum are prohibited in Singapore. Three attractions help to make Singapore’s skyline unique and recognizable. The Singapore Flyer is one of the world’s largest observation wheels. The 45-minute slow revolution affords panoramic views of the city and the Ma-

The boat area has an observation deck for incredible city views, a bar and an infinity pool. The two domes and the towering vertical Supertrees of the Gardens by the Bay are home to more than 250,000 rare plants from around the world. I was in Singapore for the Chinese New Year celebrated during the first 15 days of February, with 2016 being the year of the monkey. The traditional New Year celebration includes the Prosperity Salad called Lo Hei. This custom involves the gathering of family and friends around the table for the mixing of the salad ingredients of

raw fish, shredded vegetables, condiments and sauces. Each ingredient signifies an auspicious wish for the New Year. Once all the ingredients are added, diners stand and use chopsticks to enthusiastically toss the salad in the air while stating aloud their wishes for the New Year. The food in Singapore was primarily Asian, with rice, noodles and prawn dominating the menu. Restaurants and outdoor food courts, referred to as serving hawker food, abound in every neighborhood. Westerners quickly learn to eat with chopsticks! Napkins are not available to diners in Singapore except at very fancy restaurants. One highlight of my time in Singapore was a visit to the

Letters to the Editor Protect public safety To the editor: Recently, members of the CT General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Public Safety and Security heard public testimony on HB 5408, An Act Concerning the Presentation of a Carry Permit. It requires gun owners carrying in public to show their

While police should not be allowed to stop civilians without cause, guns are dangerous. Given the increasing frequency of mass shootings, it is fair and reasonable to empower police officers

Three of those incredible creatures sat on a bench eating sunflower seeds in an open air café while humans enjoyed their breakfasts. It was incredible to be within arm’s reach of those beautiful apes.

Later that evening, I returned to the zoo after dark for the night safari. This included animal viewing from the tram and four walking trails. In the evening, the zoo was quieter and cooler than during the day. Many of the animals, especially the cats, were more active after dark than they had been during the day.

BHS Red Cross club is working to fulfill the mission of the national organization.

Students at Berlin High School are taking the Red Cross club to new levels. What started as only a few members has grown to nearly 30 since the beginning of the school year. Together they are working to fulfill the mission of the American Red Cross. President and founder of the club, Steven Miano, is going beyond just impacting his school and community. He and other members are working to help another country. “One goal for our club this year is to raise $500 for the

Vaccinate a Village project,” he explained. The money will provide vaccinations for measles and rubella for a community in a third-world country. So far

the club has raised $300 for the project. The club is a registered chapter of the national Red Cross organization. The main concept of a Red Cross school club is to hold fundraisers, while also being prepared for emergency situations. Miano and his classmates found a unique way to combine the two. “This spring, we plan to

accomplish our goal with the sales of Zip Kits,” Miano stated. The kits are individual first aid kits that come in several sets for sports, homes, cars, or babies. The club will be selling the kits at school and at sporting events. Club advisor and Special Education teacher Ashley Cassello is See Club / Page A19

Since becoming advisor this year, Cassello has seen members apply for similar programs and scholarships. “It’s a great transition into the real world for them,” she said. The club hopes to recruit more members next year and continue growing the club.

“With the help of our town, our club can continue to make a positive impact on our community and the world,” Miano said.
