The unseasonably warm weather prompted golf season to start early in central Connecticut. Timberlin Golf Club in Berlin was one of several that opened Tuesday morning, March 8. “It’s great for the town that we got to open early,” said Marc Bayram, Timberlin head golf professional, who hit a ceremonial tee shot to start the season at the municipal course. “Everyone is excited.” The Tradition Golf Club in Wallingford also opened last Tuesday. Proposed budget to impact several projects By Ashley Kus

ment as it was only meant to last eight to 10 years, but Capodiece said at a budget meeting last week it will be put off another year. Capodiece told town councilors Tuesday night, March 8 that cracks are also an ongoing issue at the McGee Middle School tennis courts and the surface will need to be replaced soon. The high school tennis courts, however, will no longer be patched. “Interscholastic competition would be jeopardized,” he said.

The Berlin Citizen

Slight increases in the town’s recreation, public grounds and community departments will mean some improvements to recreation facilities, but larger projects will have to wait. The town’s turf field, for example, is high on the priority list of projects for Community, Recreation and Park Services Director Jim Capodiece. The aging 13-year-old field is in need of replace-

Last year, two of six courts had to be shut down as they were deemed unusable. The two basketball courts are also in need of patching and repairing. All six courts that need work would cost an estimated $385,000. In the Public Grounds department, the budget is proposed at $1,603,688. This is a $167,000 increase from last year’s budget. Another major project that Capodiece brought up specific for this area was the East Berlin pool.

Caroline’s Dance Center, LLC Caroline’s Dance Center, LLC

“It’s important to teach kids to swim and to have a public pool for them to learn in,” he said. He mentioned that the pool was patched recently but will soon need additional and more significant work. The concrete piece of the project will go to bid, while he stated the rest would be in the budget. Concerning safety issues, the Griswold playscape was also flagged as needing to be replaced. The two other elementary school play areas

were replaced recently and are up to date. Griswold’s is close to 25-years-old. The school has an idea planned but Capodiece noted the school is about $45,000 short for the ideal playscape. The school is raising funds to cover the remaining cost. The proposed town budget is $85,560,689, a 6.16 percent increase from last year’s budget. Several more departments were to meet with the council before its Tuesday, March 15 meeting.

significant work ahead to replace signs in town to comply with state standards. He added that Berlin met the first part of the requirements and they were currently going through the process of replacing signs. With a 1 percent cut, $27,000 would be cut in sign funds, and with 5 percent it would be $80,000. Maintenance trucks were also a priority in the budget. Healy explained that the fleet always needs to be reliable and that there should always be a spare truck available in case one breaks down. The decision to buy or lease the trucks will be discussed further by the council. Healy discussed future work that would eventually have to be done in town. He stated that more roads need to be replaced next year, and that considering the next five to 10 years was crucial. This was the second week of budget presentations by town departments. The council is looking for 1 to 5 percent cuts in each department. The proposed town budget is $85,560,689, a 6.16 percent increase from last year’s budget.

In the meantime the Highways department will prebuy salt for next year. Healy stated that if they made an $80,000 cut in the budget they would have to put that amount back in the following year. They increased their total budget from $1,939,804 to $2,051,483 and the amount budgeted for snow and ice was $180,000, also an increase from last year. However, Healy suggested that though they could potentially factor in a 1 percent cut it may not be the best idea. With a mild

Schools Griswold school earns first place, $8,000 Two months ago, Mary E. Griswold Elementary School entered a $200,000 national education contest hoping for a chance at one of the 14 prizes that would be awarded

to recognize the best in K-12 innovation. In addition to completing an online application for the fifth annual Follett Challenge, Griswold school also submitted a short

video to promote its innovative programs that teach students the 21st century skills they need to be prepared for life. Griswold’s application and video highlighted the implementation of eBooks into the classroom curriculum. This year, Griswold school challenged grade 3-5 students to build upon their 21st century learning skills while immersed in medieval period roles and costuming. They unleashed a six-week ebrary

Quest, which consisted of enticing literature via eBooks, partnered with an engaging Follett Shelf online platform, and packaged in a motivational medieval theme. “In just those short eight weeks, Griswold students surpassed our goal, reading over 4,000 eBooks,” said Griswold librarian, Danielle Salina. Griswold school competed against 38 schools that were also successful in making it to the final round. The $8,000 Popular Vote award was pre-

mised solely on online votes. Griswold knew the majority of schools it was competing against would have the advantage of students voting in school. The age requirement for voters was 13, a disadvantage for the elementary school. But Griswold school was prepared. Griswold rallied students, parents, teachers, and the surrounding community. The school used social media and town stores, See Griswold / Page A10

Musicians Gold Medal Fiddle Competition held in Cork, Ireland in 2011. Since 2010, he has taught fiddle and tin whistle for the Reynolds-Hanafin-Cooley branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann in Boston. Much to Gagliardi’s delight and dismay, Aromin is working on incorporating English concertina into his repertoire of instruments. Gagliardi said he discovered folk music in high school by way of a cassette tape of the Connecticut- based band, The Morgans. “I didn’t really listen to much music before that, maybe Weird Al here and there,” said Gagliardi with a laugh. “But for some reason I fell in love with nautical music.” Nautical music, just like songs of the American Civil War, have a strong Irish influence, said Gagliardi, whose mother’s mother was an O’Brien from County Clare. After listening to The Morgans, he said, he marched out and bought a concer-

tina. Although he never received formal lessons, his music-making was nurtured and encouraged at sessions by local traditional musicians including Joe Gerhard, John Tabb, Jeanne Freeman, Jon Warner and many others from the time he first started going to sessions. He is now a regular session guest host at McKinnon’s in Hartford, The Playwright in Hamden and up until its untimely end, Anna Liffey’s in New Haven. Gagliardi has been in a number of folk music bands (Full Gael with Will O! ’Hare and Gary Palmer, and Shinbone Alley with Tyler Bussey and Chris Biase) and played throughout the Northeast at festivals, house concerts, coffeehouses, farmers markets and other venues small and large. He has had the pleasure of joining Robbie O’Connell, Dan Milner and Jeanne Freeman at the 32nd and 34th annual Mystic Sea Music Festivals. On a number of occasions, he’s joined Don Sineti and other members of The Morgans on stage which

he said, “has been a satisfying full-circle sort of experience.” He’s also played a few gigs with Jeff Davis who has become a close friend and musical mentor. Davis, one of the country’s most respected collectors and interpreters of traditional music, has traveled far to visit source singers — farmers and miners who remember the old songs and tunes — and to libraries and archives, always looking for the best of the music that was once common in the towns and villages of the region. Gagliardi placed first in the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Se-

nior Duets competition with Jon Warner and the Senior Melodeon and Mouth Organ competition. Since 2012, he’s led a slow session and taught concertina at the Connecticut Academy of Irish Music and has also been an anchor at the Lower Valley Beginner Irish Session in Holyoke, Mass. In his undergraduate days, he established and led a Folk Music club at the University of Connecticut. He says since he can’t dance a step, he tries to make good use of his time sitting by singing and playing banjo, baritone ukulele, harmonica, or melodeon.

a banjo and a pair of complementary voices, The Vox Hunters have developed a reputation for presenting “an exciting repertoire of driving dance tunes blended with an unorthodox collection of interesting songs and musical varia.” “Whatever we like, we play,” said Gagliardi from his office at Storrs where he is working towards a degree in entomology. The musician grew up in Berlin. Along with an eclectic and ever-growing amalgam of songs both inside and far outside the realm of folk music, said Gagliardi, the two musicians have years of performance experience ranging from small scale concerts in cozy coffeehouses, libraries, and lamp-lit living rooms, to farmers markets, weddings, festivals, and other large public venues. “We particularly enjoy intimate settings like house shows where we can more easily coax listeners to join in on choruses,” he said, “but we’re equally at home on the performance stage entertaining larger audiences.” Aromin, who studied at Berklee College of Music and the University of Limerick, is a graduate of the North Bennet Street School in Boston, where he earned his diploma in Violin Making & Repair. He currently works as a repair technician at McCarten Violins in Pawtucket, and when time allows, he makes his own instruments for his company, Aromin Violins. He also plays with the Boston-based Irish music group, The Ivy Leaf. Picking up the fiddle and tin whistle in his mid-teens, Aromin learned much of his music from renowned Irish musicians and tunesmiths Jimmy Devine and Patrick Hutchinson, both of whom helped to foster an interest in the lyrical and colorful styles of older musicians such as Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford, Bobby Casey, Johnny Doherty, and Tommy Reck. In addition to being the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Fleadh Cheoil Champion for Senior Fiddle, Aromin was also a finalist at the Séan Ó Riada

Karl Brownstein KENSINGTON — With profound sadness, the family of Karl Brownstein, of Kensington, announces his passing on Sunday, March 6, 2016, after a brief illness. Born in New Britain, son of the late Anthony and the late Anella Brownstein, he graduated from New Britain High School, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from the Diving and Salvage School in Bayonne, N.J. His training was depicted in the movie “Men of Honor”, and Karl, always a man of few words, only comment after watching it was “the ship wasn’t that big.” Upon his discharge, he apprenticed as a tool and die maker. He married the love of his life, Joyce Johnson, on Sept. 3, 1955, and in 1962 they moved to Kensington where they raised three children, instilling in them the values of hard work, honesty, and decency, and where he was a communicant of St. Paul’s Church for over 50 years. He worked as a tool and die maker at General Electric for almost 30 years, retiring shortly after his wife’s death. Karl had the uncanny ability to fix or improve on anything mechanical, and would always come to the aid of his family and friends. Attending countless dance performances, swim meets, and ball games, he enjoyed playing cards and domi-

noes with his family, and was an avid New England Patriots and UConn basketball fan. Karl leaves his children and their spouses, Linda and Dean Martin, of Kensington, Bill Brownstein and Debbie Lotstein, of East Hartland, and Debra and Paul Karambay, of Berlin; his grandsons, Bryce Martin, Darrin Misteri, and William Brownstein Jr.; his step-grandchildren, Jamie Karambay, and Katie Goff and her family; his sisterin-law, Constance Brownstein; his life-long friends, Chickie and Donald Saraceno, and Bobby and Flora Bell; and several nieces and a nephew. In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, he was predeceased

by his brothers, Ray, A.J., and Anthony. His family wishes to express their gratitude to Bristol Hospital’s staff on F South for their care and compassion during Dad’s final days. Funeral services were held Friday, March 11, at Porter’s Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway in Berlin, with a funeral liturgy at St. Paul’s Church. He was laid to rest with full military honors beside his wife in Maple Cemetery in Berlin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. Opinion A warm winter While not known for being terribly accurate, in this case, the Farmer’s Almanac was not even close. The annual North American periodical predicted this winter would be just as brutal for our region as the previous one, dubbing it a “winter deja vu,” and predicting “snow, snow and more snow.” Of course, that wasn’t the case. In fact, when the meteorological winter wrapped up on the last day of February, the winter of 2015-16 was tied with the winter of 200102 as Connecticut’s warmest on record. Those winters, the average temperature for the months of December, January and February was 35.2 degrees. We certainly hear a lot of “warmest ever,” “coldest ever,” “most devastating

storm ever” talk these days, and scientists have no problem pointing out the culprit — climate change. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the major scientific agencies of the United States — including NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration — agree that climate change is occurring and that humans are contributing to it. In 2010, the National Research Council concluded that “Climate change is occurring, is very likely caused by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.” For a certain segment of society, however, such a dire prediction is not at all troubling. Some actually believe climate change is a hoax per-

petrated on the public by leftist scientists and politicians seeking to undermine business. Folks of this mindset are free to believe as they wish, and likely will never change their view, but facts are facts. Consider this — NASA reports: “All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed since 1880. Most of this warming has occurred since the 1970s, with the 20 warmest years having occurred since 1981 and with all 10 of the warmest years occurring in the past 12 years. Even though the 2000s witnessed a solar output decline resulting in an unusually deep solar minimum in 20072009, surface temperatures continue to increase.” Scientists tell us the

oceans absorb much of this heat, which leads to more severe weather events, and ice melt; raising the global sea level. And that, of course, could have catastrophic implications. Again, this winter tied as

the warmest on record in our state. We won’t be one bit surprised if a new record is set in 2017. Would anyone? Published originally in the Meriden Record-Journal

Letters to the Editor A true politician To the editor: I agree with liberal House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz that Berlin and Southington deserve an honest debate of the issues. However in his “Commentary” in the March 3 issue of The Berlin Citizen, Joe’s opening sentence was: “While the 2016 campaign season has clearly started, I was hoping that it would never turn this negative, let alone so soon.” Negative? Since when is questioning an elected official’s voting record negative? He also announces: “I will not respond again to negative, half-true letters to the editor in this, or any, paper, blog, or social media post. Berlin deserves better than that type of political debate.”

Half-truth letters to the editor!? Really?! Joe, it’s your voting record. Does that sound like Joe wants to encourage an honest debate of the issues? It doesn’t seem so. The Majority Leader’s limited explanations to half of our concerns were written like a true politician. Everything sounded wonderful. Except, if you dig deep you’ll find purposeful exclusions. The most glaring was Joe’s avoiding to tell you why he voted for the criminal early release program (HB7104) in which 30,000 criminals have been released back on the streets with a re-offending rate between 65 and 80 percent. Did you know sexual predators are eligible to participate in this program? In a recent study, from May 2012 to April 2015, 35 murders were committed by these “reformed” criminals.

Does Joe’s “yes” vote make you and your children safer? His response for voting yes to both of the largest tax increases in Connecticut’s history, Majority Leader Joe declares: “Yes, I have. But, I have also insisted that every program, every agency, every lineitem funded by taxpayers be justified and held accountable.” Well folks, with a $911 million deficit, it’s undeniable that Joe isn’t being “accountable.” Scott Veley CTGOP #6

Author to present hidden war history at Berlin library By Ashley Kus

The Berlin Citizen

Nearly forgotten, and buried in memorials around Connecticut, are the lives of over 50,000 Connecticut soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Local author John Banks will bring their stories to the surface when he presents his book “Hidden History of Connecticut Union Soldiers” at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m. “I don’t go into battle strategies, but, instead, I go into

the tales of the soldiers who went through those battles,” Banks said. The book is his second story collection about the Civil War. His first book, “Connecticut Yankees at Antietam,” was inspired by his blog, which touched on the different soldiers and their roles in the war. “I would go past a Civil War memorial every day and think; who are these people?” the author said. Since moving to the state from Texas 10 years ago, Banks has been interested in

the history of Connecticut. After creating his Civil War blog, a publisher contacted him with a proposal to write a book that went further into the soldiers’ stories. For a full year, Banks researched within the Connecticut Historical Society, the Connecticut State Library, and even through the national archives in Washington. “If I don’t tell these stories they may be forgotten,” he said. Adult Reference Librarian Carrie Tyszka says the library has had Civil War au-

thors come to speak in the past. However, she is excited to have a local author come in and, specifically, talk about Civil War soldiers from the state. “I thought his talk would be of particular interest to local history buffs,” she said. Currently an editor at ESPN, and a longtime journalist, Banks used his journalism style to search for the best angle to tell soldiers’ stories. “I tried to hook the reader quickly,” he noted. In the book, Banks reveals how 40 sets of brothers from the state perished in battle.

“Imagine having one son from a family dying in the war. But this was two sons,” he said. “It was the ultimate sacrifice.” Banks has put on nearly 25 presentations across the state, and said he treats the discussions like a show-andtell. “I’ll bring things with me to pass around and get people engaged,” he explained. Banks is part of the library’s ongoing author series. Next month the featured author will be Ann Nyberg. For more information and to register visit www.berlinpeck. org/

After attending a Science Teachers Association (STA) conference, the science teacher decided that the new fair would consist of more project options. It wasn’t a typical science fair at Saint Paul School in Berlin, Thursday, Feb. 25. Science teacher Kristin Michalak had been working with her middle school students since the beginning of the year on their projects, which ranged from traditional experiments, to museum-level displays. The most unique, however, were the inventions. “One student actually customized their Chromebook by designing a smart case with a built-in whiteboard and mouse extension,” Michalak explained.

Parents and visitors walked around the gymnasium to view the more than 70 different projects, all of which were judged by a Central Connecticut State University Biology professor. Michalak started the concept of a “new and improved” science fair a few years ago after getting feedback from students who were bored with the same old projects. “I really wanted them to enjoy the process more,” she said.

While deciding on a Berlin High School team to be recognized this year, it was hard to overlook the accomplishments of the four golf teams of 1987-90, so it was decided that all four would be inducted together this year. The 1987, 88, 89, 90 golf teams won four consecutive Division II state championships. During that run they had three individual champions: Paul Veneziano in 1987, with a score of 78, and Jon Veneziano, who captured the individual title in 1988 with a score of 68, and did so again in 1989 with a 73.
