Berlin PD puts a stop to wrong way drivers

Traffic enforcement at Berlin High School is getting a crackdown. The Berlin Police Department was out at the school for multiple days recently observing dangerous traffic patterns, specifically vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road. Deputy Chief John Klett says it has become an unsafe situation with drop-offs and pick-ups during school hours. “We are trying to make it safer,” he said. Several officers, including Klett, witnessed vehicles driving the wrong way on Patterson Way to pass other drivers. The vehicles then proceeded to cut back into the right lane. Wednesday, March 16 until that Friday, March 18 officers wrote six tickets for the violation. “The problem is that people are getting impatient in the line,” Klett explained. The hazardous traffic is not
Candy was on the minds of the children who showed up at Sage Park Saturday, March 19 to participate in the annual Easter Candy Hunt.
Decades-old Easter candy collection event is still hopping By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
When the bunny’s paw went down, the kids took off. The Berlin Parks and Recreation department held its annual Easter Candy Hunt, Saturday, March, 19 at Sage Park, and more than 200 youngsters scrambled all over Auxiliary Field grabbing candy after the Easter Bunny gave the motion to start. “It’s a big anticipation and then they all run out on the field,” SuperSee Wrong way / Page A5 intendent of Recreation Debbie Den-
nis said. Then – “It’s done within minutes.” Clearly a hit with local families, the Easter hunt has been going on for 30-plus years now. And it shows no signs of going away. “We had more kids than last year,” Dennis explained. This was partly due to the springlike weather March 19. Endless winter snowstorms forced the event inside in 2016, but not this time.
Many girls dream of going to prom in the perfect dress and dancing the night away, feeling like a princess. Unfortunately, for some girls in Connecticut this is not possible. “I was talking to some friends about what dress they were going to pick out and then I thought; well what about the girls who can’t afford it?” said Berlin High School junior and Interact Club Vice President, Nicole Cyr. Cyr decided to research ways to help girls get prom dresses they could otherwise not afford. See Prom / Page A3

It’s not just the girls who get their dream proms. Their parents also get to experience the event with them. DeCroce says they often tell her that without the charity, their daughters might not be able to have a

Dresses donated to Princess and the Prom as part of BHS Interact Club’s dress drive. Croce said. Last year over 600 girls attended the event, which took place in March, with over 150 volunteers helping out. This year DeCroce hopes even more people register and volunteer. “Some girls come in and know exactly what they want, others are not so sure,” she explained. The goal of Princess and the Prom is to create a memorable experience for girls who might not otherwise be able to have their dream dress. Volunteers act as personal shoppers who help pick out the dresses and accessories. For Interact members Cyr and LaVoie, prom held a personal significance. “For me personally I’ve been dreaming of going to prom since I was a little kid

so it makes me happy to know that there will be people now that actually get to go because of the work and donations that people have provided,” LaVoie said. The effort also represents the values of the club. The high school chapter of the world’s largest service organization, Rotary International, aims to provide leadership and goodwill. “We are helping others in the community,” Cyr explained. The Princess and the Prom event is entering its tenth year and is open to all Connecticut girls. The participants do not need to provide financial information, but they do need to register ahead of time. “It was a nice surprise to receive all the dresses they collected,” DeCroce noted.

She came across the West Hartford-based organization, Princess and the Prom, which gives donated dresses to girls in need. Along with the Interact Club, Cyr decided to run a donation drive at the high school. “It really speaks volume to the impact in the area,” said Dara DeCroce, president of Princess and the Prom. Princess and the Prom offers a three-day event from Friday, April, 15, through Sunday, April, 17, for girls in Connecticut to come and pick-out a prom dress and accessories for free. DeCroce was impressed with the more than 120 dresses the Interact Club was able to donate this year. Last year they donated 27. Interact Club President and BHS junior Hannah LaVoie, helped Cyr prepare for the dress drive. “By the end of March we had already contacted Good Cause Gifts and people were already turning in dresses,” LaVoie said. People were able to donate dresses at the high school, or Good Cause Gifts on Main Street. The dresses were then taken to Best Cleaners to be cleaned for free, before being brought to Princess and the Prom. From there, the organization sets up a shopping experience at the Hilton Garden Inn in Windsor. “The overall atmosphere is so upbeat and positive,” De-

“You’ve got to be patient or find an alternative route to take,” the deputy chief advised. To cut back on the heavy traffic, Klett recommends that drivers come through from Farmington Avenue. Officers will continue to spot check the area and make sure drivers are following the rules of the road. The Berlin PD is also reminding people that the issue is being primarily handled by the police and that concerned residents should not direct their questions to the school administration.

“We had a really great crowd outside this year,” Dennis noted. The event is open to all Berlin children age 2 to 10. The candy-hunters are broken up into two groups, with different ages meeting the
Easter Bunny and starting their hunts at separate times. The field turned into a gold-mine for treats with candy scattered everywhere. Excited kids grabbed as many goodies as they could fit in their baskets before it was all gone.
a new issue; Klett says it has been going on long before the school was under construction. Just this past year, the traffic pattern was changed from a one-way street to a two-way. Officers have been periodically enforcing the area since September. A complaint to the school resource officer a few weeks ago sparked further investigation. “There’s, unfortunately, no perfect solution to the problem because of current dropoff issues,” Klett said. Parents dropping off and
picking up their children at the top of the hill have caused significant traffic back-ups. Even though there are designated drop-off and pick-up areas, Klett says many drivers are not abiding by the rules and are instead stopping in the road to let out their children. “We worry about pedestrians crossing the street in that area,” he said. Klett fears that vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road are not only causing more traffic headaches, but are also creating the potential for a major accident. He says people need to read and follow the signs.

McGee to stage ‘State Fair’ By Ashley Kus
The Berlin Citizen
Local middle school students dressed in overalls, 1940’s style dresses, Mary Jane shoes, and farmer boots swarmed the McGee auditorium to get ready for rehearsal. Director Katie Griswold was busy getting
derland. “State Fair,” a Broadway production, is a more realistic story concerning a family that travels to the Iowa State Fair in the summer of 1946. Romances fall apart while new ones develop; which Griswold noted is another new concept for the students to act out. “This is my first lead here,” said eighth grader Alexis Dascher. Her character, Emily Arden, is one of six lead roles. Emily is a singer whose flirtatious personality captures the attention of farmer Wayne Frake, played by eighth grader Noah Reed. “I’ve had smaller roles in the past, so this is my first lead at McGee,” Reed said. With 55 actors and 11 crew members, the packed musical offers plenty of scenes to allow everyone to shine. The cast is not only a mix of grades, it also varies in individual theater experience. For Dascher this is her ninth show. “It’s not a boring role,” she said. “I can portray more personality.”
everyone prepared for the first day of rehearsing “State Fair” in costume Thursday, March, 17. “It’s a little more mature than what they’ve done in the past,” Griswold explained. The drama club had previously done more Disney-based shows, such as Peter Pan and Alice in Won-

A scene where Emily Arden, played by Alexis Dascher, sings in “State Fair.” | Ashley Kus / The Berlin Citizen In one scene, Dascher’s character sings with back-up dancers clad in matching polka dot dresses while Reed’s character looks on from a corner table. The scene offers a 1940’s feel and Dascher gets to show her character’s big personality. “She’s at the fair but she also gets to be different places as a singer,” Dascher explained. Along with plenty of musical numbers, a host of choreography is present in several full-cast scenes. The students practiced dancing in moving lines in the number “All I Owe Ioway.” They clapped, stomped their feet, and spun in unison as one line moved forward and the other moved back.
“They’re really enjoying it; it’s fun music,” Griswold said. When The Citizen visited the rehearsal earlier this month, students were still memorizing parts while they waited for their scene. With a slew of monologues and general dialogue in the show, it’s a lot to consume. “I have lots of lines and scenes, and I get to express a different side,” Reed said. The students will have three shows to show off their hard work, which began in November. The performances are Friday, April 1 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 2 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at mcgeedrama.eventbrite.com.

Children’s department at Berlin library reopens After more than a month of repairs, the children’s department at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library officially reopened Monday. “We are so grateful, said Jennifer Needham, head of children and teen services. A burst pipe last month flooded the children’s department and destroyed about 1,400 books, along with items in the play area. The library set up a Go-Fund Me page to replace damaged books and other items. “It is still a work in progress, Needham said. Though the department will open for normal hours, several shelves will remain bare until books are replaced. Needham says the community has been very generous. Children even offered their piggy banks. G r i swo l d E l e m e n t a r y School ended up raising over $2,000 for the library through their Read Across America “Read-A-Thon event. The library’s Go-Fund-Me page has now raised $10,075, surpassing the $10,000 goal. As a way to thank everyone, the library will hold a celebration in the children’s department on Monday, April 11. UpBeat students will provide balloon animals and face painting from noon until 2 p.m. Minstrel Storyteller Mary-Jo Maichack will also be at the event from 2 to 3 p.m. with her puppets.
The Local History room, also damaged, is still undergoing repairs.

Sock hop to benefit world-wide cause By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
Bethany Covenant Church on Mill Street is transporting people to the 1950’s as part of its sock hop fundraiser in the church gym. The event will be held Saturday, April, 16, 5:30 to 9 p.m. The sock hop is part of an effort to raise funds for the church’s November project for the organization Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). “People are coming for fun but we always take a moment to let them know what it’s all about,” said Kristen Walsh, FMSC Volunteer Mobile Pack Coordinator of Bethany Covenant Church. This is the third year for the fundraiser, and the sixth year of the church’s involvement with FMSC. While the sock hop event is fun-filled, it leads up to a busy three days in November when some 100,000 meals will be prepared and packed for those in need. The non-profit Minnesota-based organization feeds starving children around the world. The food packed by the church is primarily delivered to Africa by FMSC. This concept caught the

One meal costs just
22 cents. This year’s sock hop could make it possible for the church to pack its one millionth meal. “We commit to 100,000 meals each time, and this year we are hoping for 131,000 to make a total of one million,” Walsh said. Tickets to the sock hop will go towards the $29,000 needed to purchase the raw materials required for the meals. One thousand volunteers are needed to participate in the food preparation

Bernadette Schreiner KENSINGTON — Bernadette (Blankenburg) Schreiner passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at her home, surrounded by her family and her beloved (and lovingly spoiled) German shepherd dogs. Bern was happily married to her husband Rick for 37 years, and was incredibly proud of her three children, Casey, Scott, and Brooke. As a stay at home mother, she taught her children the joy of reading and learning and encouraged and supported them unconditionally. After her own children grew up, she continued to inspire countless children while working at Hubbard Elementary School for many years. A gifted artist, Bern was an expert calligrapher and practiced the German paper-cutting art of scheren-

Helen A. Wiernasz schnitte, often combining the two into beautiful works that still hang in family members’ homes today. She was an avid skier and loved exploring the mountains of New England with her family and friends, and she also worked as a ranger at Mount Southington for many years. In more recent years, she rediscovered her love for art, exploring photography and enjoying the beauty in nature. More than anything, though, she loved spending time with her best friend and husband “Babe,” on weekend bike riding adventures, trips to the beach, or just relaxing at home by their wood stove. Her love of animals was life-long and inspiring, and ensured the home was always decorated with ample amounts of dog hair. Bernadette is survived by her husband, Rick (and their three German Shepherds, Heike, Klaus, and Fritz); her son, Casey and his partner, Daniel (and their pit bull, Emmy), her son, Scott and his wife,
Ashley (and their German Shepherd, Ivan); and her daughter, Brooke and her boyfriend, Brian (and their Dalmatian, Taygon). She also leaves behind her mother, Marie Blankenburg; her sisters, Diane Parker and Maribeth Ritchie; her sister-in-law, Pam Blankenburg; and many, many other cherished cousins; nieces, nephews; relatives; and friends. She is predeceased by her father, Richard Blankenburg; her brother, Richard “Skip” Blankenburg; and many other beloved relatives. Memorial services will be held at Kenney-Luddy Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St., New Britain, on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care of Meriden, an organization that has been very helpful and comforting to the Schreiner family in this difficult time.

Opinion Haunting ‘mortality piece’ featured at open house The compelling tale of a masterpiece of American folk art, the story of its discovery, and Berlin’s poignant connection to the young woman who created it, will be the topic of a free program on Saturday, April 9, at 2 p.m., at the Berlin Historical Society, 305 Main St., Kensington, as part of the museum’s Spring Open House (1 to 4 p.m.). The remarkable story will be recounted by Elizabeth Abbe, former director of public outreach at the Connecticut Historical Society, and Diana McCain, a historian and author of numerous articles and books on Connecticut history. The masterpiece is a finely-stitched needlework titled “The First, Second and Last Scene of Mortality,” made between 1775 and 1783 by Prudence Punderson of Preston, Connecticut. The powerfully evocative needlework depicts a young woman, believed to be Prudence Punderson herself, seated at a table, with a baby in a cradle to one side and a coffin with the initials “P.P.” on the lid on the other. It represents the stages of life, cradle to grave. The coffin symbolizes the inevitability of death, which the high mortality rate of Prudence’s

time made a looming presence for young and old alike. The “mortality piece,” as the work has come to be known, is unique in several ways. Most eighteenth-century women demonstrated their skill with the needle by stitching decorative flowers or fanciful pastoral scenes. Prudence Punderson chose
to do a realistic self-portrait, unique in early American women’s art, setting herself in a meticulously detailed domestic setting that is a rare source of information about the interior furnishings of a Revolutionary War-era house. Prudence depicted clothing and furniture, a checkered rug and
window curtains. An elegant mirror is shown shrouded in cloth, as was the custom in homes when someone had died. Prudence Punderson herself was an unusual personality in a turbulent time of divided loyalties. Born in 1758 in Preston, she enjoyed a better education than most
Aresimowicz honored by AARP Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D - Berlin/Southington) was awarded the 2015 AARP Legislative Achievement Award, Tuesday, March 22, in recognition of his leadership on retirement savings in Connecticut. “I’m truly honored to receive this award from AARP,” said Aresimowicz. “Currently, more than 600,000 Connecticut residents, mostly small business workers, do not have a retirement savings plan available to them through their employer — and most fear they have not saved enough for retirement. AARP honored Aresimowicz for his leadership and outstanding advocacy for the establishment of the Con-
necticut Retirement Security Board, which after more than a year of extensive research in consultation with organizations specializing in retirement savings, determined that creating a plan at no cost to taxpayers is feasible and would address the retirement savings crisis in Connecticut. “On behalf of AARP Connecticut’s more than 600,000 members, we are proud to honor Majority Leader Aresimowicz with a legislative achievement award,” said John Erlingheuser, Advocacy Director for AARPCT. “Through his leadership, residents of Connecticut are one step closer to a more secure retirement.” Earlier this year, AARP released
the results of their own survey among Connecticut voters, age 35-64, about workplace retirement savings plans, which support the findings of the CRSB study. Eighty-eight percent of those surveyed said they wished they had saved more for retirement, and 61 percent, or 3 out of 5, said they were concerned that some residents have not saved enough for retirement and could end up being reliant on public assistance. AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, with a membership of more than 37 million, that works on issues that matter most to families such as healthcare, employment security and retirement planning.
women of her era, and came of age during the American Revolution. She became engaged to Dr. Timothy Rossiter. Prudence’s father, Ebenezer Punderson, was a Loyalist who sided with the British. Considered a traitor by Connecticut patriots, Punderson fled to British-held Long Island. Prudence and the rest of the family joined him in 1778. Prudence broke her engagement to Timothy Rossiter, who was, by now, a surgeon in the Continental Army. Prudence endured five years of hardship, suffering, and danger in exile. In 1783, America having won its war for independence, she and Timothy Rossiter, with whom she’d re-established contact, were married on Long Island. They soon moved to Berlin, where, in July of 1784, Prudence gave birth to their daughter, Sophia. Sadly, the “mortality piece” Prudence had stitched with such skill proved to be a harbinger of her future. She died two months after Sophia’s birth, only 26 years old. She was buried in Maple Cemetery on Worthington Ridge in See Mortality / Page A16

For the second year in a row, the library will be participating in the Passport to Connecticut Libraries Program in April. “Last year the program took place in September, but this year they decided to make it coincide with National Library Week,” Carrie Tyszka, Head of Reference and Adult Services, explained. More than 100 Connecticut libraries will be participating in the month-long free event starting Friday, April 1, and running through Saturday, April 30. The program is open
to adults and children, and the library hopes it encourages residents to explore the diversity of public libraries. To participate, residents can visit the Berlin library and pick up their passport. The library will then stamp it and give a token gift to get folks started. From there, residents can visit any of the participating libraries with their passport. The other libraries will stamp the passport as well and give out a small gift. At each visit, residents must show their library card to receive a stamp. By visiting at least five participating libraries, and returning the passport to a participating library by May 6, qualifying patrons will be entered into one state-wide

Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrates 50 years By Ashley Kus
The Berlin Citizen
For Barbara Helming, the Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters program is a way for her to make a difference. “It’s my small way of making a small change in the world,” said Helming, a big sister. The Berlin resident has participated in the program twice, once during the ‘90s and again years later. The Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters in Connecticut is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Helming’s first match with a “little” lasted nine years. She has been paired with Meriden resident Ke’Aira Spells for the past eight years. “Most of our matches do not last that long,” said Nutmeg Big Brothers Big Sisters YOU CAN BE

Match Support Coordinator Jackie Lundie, adding most matches last about three years. With no children of her own, Helming has made Spells a part of her family. “It is a gift to watch her grow up,” Helming said. When the two first met, Spells had just turned 6 years old, which is the minimum age requirement for the program. Helming described her as quiet and sweet. Spells grew up with many siblings and Helming wanted to give her a unique experience on her own. Their first day together consisted of time at the park followed by Helming’s house for dinner. Soon enough, Helming was meeting up with her little sister every week. “I love Barbara’s relationship with my daughter,” Spells’ mother Kenya explained. “She’s very positive and talks to Ke’Aira about life on multiple levels.”
East Berlin resident Barbara Helming and Meriden resident Ke’Aira Spells have been matched through Big Brother Big Sisters for nearly 8 years now. | Contributed Helming, a nurse, has shared her career experience with Spells who, at age 14, is considering a medical career. “It was just one of those freak things that just worked out perfectly,” Helming said. done some of that together,” Helming said. “It’s fun to explore with her.” The two have gone on several trips, including one to Times Square. “It doesn’t need to be expensive, just the little things means so much to the kids in this program,” she said. Kenya is happy her daughter has gotten to explore a bigger world with Helming. “Ke’Aira’s really matured a lot through this program and she’s experienced so much she might not have otherwise,” she said. Helming recommends people get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. “You get to teach the next generation,” she said. So far 65,000 children have participated in the program between 1966 and 2016. this, Monday, March, 21. “I am pleased that the state is granting us funds to improve the paths. I am particularly excited that we will be able to create Berlin’s first handicapped accessible trail section so that all of our citizens will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the Pistol Creek property,” he said. The upgrades project will benefit from $125,580 from the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) Trails & Greenways Program and The CT Greenways Council. There will also be a 20 percent assist of matching funds from the town. The project is set to begin next fall or spring and is

not expected to take long to complete. The Pistol Creek paths have deteriorated over time and Economic Development Coordinator Jim Mahoney noted that upgrades were needed for the two-mile span of trails. The grant will also cover new signs that will detail information about the wetlands and wildlife. “We want to enhance the user experience,” Mahoney said. The trails are primarily used for walking and bicycling, as the paths are flat with few inclines. The repaving will take place primarily along the perimeter of The Spruce Brook Road town-owned property. The new handicap trail is proposed to run parallel to Savage Hill Road and start on Spruce Brook Road. The trail will be a one-quarter mile portion of the current cart path. The new handicap parking spaces will be in that area, on the north side of Spruce Brooke Road, as well. See Trails / Page A21

ons. Berlin finished the season tenth overall in the state. Scott set the BHS record for TD passes that season with 17, which led the state. Scott started at third base and pitched for the Berlin High School baseball team. The 1995 team went 22-2 and recorded 20 straight wins en route to a Northwest Conference title and state championship. The team finished undisputed No. 1 in the yearend Connecticut rankings. Tangled Webs, an art song recital, was held recently at Kensington Congregational Church. Art song combines classical music and renowned poetry for solo voice and piano. Depicting the dramatic love triangle of 19th-century British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, Harriet Westbrook and Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, the recital featured Steven Humes, tenor, of Berlin; Caitleen Kahn, soprano; Megan Moore, mezzo-soprano, and Florence Mak on the piano. The fourm musicians studied in the graduate program at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Tangled Webs is part of the Lynx Project, whose goal is to bring art song to diverse audiences.

CROSSWORD ANSWER
“Selling your home is a huge undertaking filled with many variables and uncertainties. It is a daunting and overwhelming task, and one of the biggest decisions you will need to make is who will be your Realtor. You want someone you can communicate openly with. Someone who listens to your ideas and doesn’t talk over them, but instead infuses them with their insight and experience to make them even more relevant. Someone with knowledge of the local real estate market who has been doing business in Berlin and surrounding towns for years, yet has a fresh perspective on current trends. In my opinion, Leslie from RE/MAX Edge is that Realtor.” - Nikki Grozio, Berlin, CT
