In less than two years, 19 businesses have decided to reside in Berlin, according to town officials. Some of these businesses relocated to the center of the state, others grew their businesses from the ground up, and a few returned to town. By contrast, during last month’s budget hearing residents continually spoke out about how they viewed Berlin as unfriendly to businesses. This came after months of zoning issues for Kensington Garden Center, which resi- Casa Mia at The Hawthorne dents vocally defended. opened in February after being vacant since 2014.

So far, seven youngsters have registered for the upcoming derby. “It was a lot of trial and error in the beginning, figuring out what worked and what didn’t,” Satkowski explained. The event starts at 8 a.m. down by the pond, where parents can register their children if they haven’t done so already. A light breakfast will be served before the fishers start casting their lines into the pond. The actual junior fishing kicks off at 9 a.m., until noon. A lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs will be served up at the park pavilion following the fishing session. Trophies are given for participation Satkowski and approximately 30 other Lions Club members will be on hand to
help with bait, fishing poles, line, and anything else the junior participants need. “The parents love it, everyone gets involved,” he said. “They look forward to this.” Satkowski credits the teamwork of the Lions as being the reason the Derby remains a success. The planning for the event started in January. The Lions have also been preparing for its Senior VIP Derby open to visually impaired people age 16 and up, on Monday, May 23, in Niantic. The senior derby will also include a light breakfast and lunch but will be held on the Black Hawk Fishing Charter in Niantic. Last year the Lions Club decided to split the junior and senior derbies and take the senior group to the ocean. “It’s getting really popular

Resident named president, CEO of Junior Achievement The Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Southwest New England appointed Kensington resident Jeremy D. Race to succeed Lou Golden, who is retiring as president and chief execu-
tive officer on June 30. Race is the organization’s current chief operating officer and has been a member of the JA staff for nearly 14 years. His appointment was recommended to the board
by the organization’s executive committee. “Jeremy cares deeply about the JA mission and brings great leadership ability, a strong strategic sense and an excellent understanding of
Kaczynski announced that a new store Ferndale Market Fresh would be opening in the plaza. The new market will be operated by Salim and Samira Saleh, a couple from New Jersey. “We are excited, we are building this from scratch,” Samira said when the market was just being renovated. Casa Mia is already open and the market is planning its official opening for next month. The trend in businesses that settle into Berlin is the town’s central location with easy access to surrounding highways. “Being here has brought people from the whole surrounding area,” said Dr. Ann Aresco, founder of ProNatural Physicians Group, which moved from New Britain Road to a newly constructed facility on Webster Square Road. Laurie Dechello, co-owner of Florida-based company Altra Service Professionals, also favored the location when she and her husband opened an office on Christian Lane at
the beginning of the year. “We chose Berlin, specifically, because it is centrally located in the area we are growing our business and it is easy access to major highways,” said Laurie DeChello, co-owner of Altra Service Professionals. The potential closing of Kensington Garden Center on Chamberlain Highway however, has residents fearing that another vacancy will soon take place. The center has been in a zoning dispute with the town over what it’s allowed to sell in the attached gift shop. Kaczynski said the town is “working with businesses and putting forth a coordinated effort to help.”

Several people voiced their opinions not only at the hearing, but also at recent Town Council and Planning & Zoning Commission meetings. They say they’re disappointed in the number of vacancies. But town officials this week stressed that new businesses are taking the place of old ones. The Hawthorne restaurant and banquet facility, now Casa Mia at The Hawthorne, was empty since the summer of 2014 and recently reopened under new ownership. “I’ve always had an interest in this area and this building,” Tony Guglielmi said back in November shortly after he became the owner. He kept the building on the Berlin Turnpike intact with renovated interiors and an Italian steak restaurant. The positive response to a returned town staple may be a sign of hope for new businesses to continue to emerge this year. “We will be seeing new players who haven’t been here looking to come to Berlin for the first time,” said Economic Development Director Chris Edge. Mayor Mark Kaczynski credits lower taxes as a way to keep businesses successful and staying in town. “We try to keep taxes low. It’s very important, but it’s not the only part,” he explained. The state’s financial woes, he said, are a contributing factor due to declining state aid. Locally, the most recent grand list also grew by less than one percent and a 1.5 percent tax increase is proposed for the next fiscal year. Town officials point to other recent successes like filling another longstanding vacancy – the former Roger’s Marketplace on the Chamberlain Highway. In the winter,

With the state primary looming, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump opened his statewide campaign headquarters in a small plaza on the Berlin Turnpike. Trump signs with the familiar “Make America Great Again” slogan dotted the plaza lawn and decorated the storefront windows. A campaign worker said Wednesday, April 13, he was unauthorized to speak about the campaign and referred all questions to Trump’s press office. Trump supporters from as far away as Danbury arrived at the headquarters last Wednesday to pick up signs. “When he gets the nomination, I think he’s going to be a lot smoother and quieter,” said Barry Connell, a former

I think he’s going to do well.” Helen Bergenty, 86, is the coordinator for the Donald Trump campaign in Plainville. She feels the U.S. needs a businessman to run the country. State Republicans have not endorsed any candidate to date and 28 delegate votes are up for grabs in the April 26 primary. For the Democrats, 71 delegate votes are at stake. Clinton has 1,287 delegates based on primaries and caucuses, compared to Sanders’ 1,037. Berlin High School seniors will be throwing their caps in the air Sunday, June 19. The town school district announced the 2016 graduation date earlier this month. Even with the spring snow storm and resulting school delays, the graduation date
is solidified. The graduation will be at 1 p.m. in Welte Auditiorium at Central Connecticut State University. Superintendent Dave Erwin said that graduation has been on Father’s Day for many years now. Last year it was June 21.
The last day of school for Berlin students won’t be set in stone until the end of April. Currently, the final day is planned for Tuesday, June 14. “We will talk it over at the end of the month,” the superintendent said. — Ashley Kus

Supporters said it’s a coincidence that less than three miles from Trump’s headquarters in the Worthington Plaza is the mosque for the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford. Trump’s campaign promises to ban Muslims from entering the country. Trump supporter John O’Brien, of Berlin, said Berlin was selected for

He said the campaign knows the mosque is close by. “That had no effect (on their decision),” O’Brien said. “It’s just like having a Catholic church, like the one right there,” he said gesturing west. But Mongi Dhaouadi, executive director of the Connecticut Council of American-Islamic Relations, said he’s very concerned about the campaign headquarters being so close to the mosque. “Obviously we believe in free speech, and Mr. Trump has the right to organize anywhere,” Dhaouadi

Opinion Beauty of Australia leaves ‘lasting impression’ Editor’s note: Recently, the writer took a 23-day adventure around the world. This is part of her travelogue. By Barbara Helming My trip of a lifetime continued with an eight-hour overnight fight from Singapore to Melbourne, Australia. This city of 4.17 million people is located on the southeast shore of Australia. The Flinders Street Station is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Completed in 1909, this busy railway station with a prominent dome, tower and arched entrance is on the Victorian Heritage Register. Taking up two city blocks, Flinders Street Station is the busiest train station in Aus-
tralia. A row of clocks above the main entrance indicate the departure time for trains on each of the lines. Thus the Melburnian phrase “I’ll meet you under the clocks” refers to the main entrance at Flinders Street Station. A modern city landmark completed in 2006, The Eureka Skydeck 88 stands at 984 feet tall, making it the tallest public viewing vantage point in the southern hemisphere. In 40 seconds, the fastest elevator in the southern hemisphere brings visitors to Level 88 of the Eureka Skydeck for fantastic views of the city of Melbourne and beyond. A late afternoon excursion took me on a 90-minute ride to Westernport Bay and across the bridge to Phillip
Island for the Little Penguin Parade. Little Penguins are found along the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand. Formerly referred to as Fairy Penguins, these tiny 13-inch tall birds with slate blue plumage swim to shore in small groups on the island. Incidentally, groups of penguins are referred to as rafts in the water and as waddles on land. The penguins stood at water’s edge at dusk deciding if it was safe to come ashore or not. Their enemies include owls and the white-bellied sea eagle. Once it was deemed safe, each small group of penguins paraded across Summerland Beach and onto the grassy areas See Helming / Page A19
Letters to the Editor Promise kept To the editor: Reality bites! The taxpayers previously voted for an expensive high school renovation and now the bonding costs are hitting our pockets. It was repeatedly mentioned that we could not promise a “zero” tax increase this term because of the actions of previous leadership, but over the long-term, taxes should stabilize. Citizens would love to see a zero tax increase, but know it is not the reality. In good faith, the Council
Majority is keeping its promise to “minimize” the tax burden. Councilor Evans, budget chairman, worked tirelessly with town employees and the school board to cut operating costs while maintaining services that Berlin citizens have come to expect. When voting on April 26, the council will again listen to what the citizens are saying and will follow your wishes. Charles R. Paonessa Town Councilor and candidate for 6th District Senate
Please vote To the editor: Berlin residents, please vote on April 26 and let your voice be heard on this year’s budget. Last fall we promised that our majority Republican Town Council members would minimize the tax increase impact to the taxpayers due to automatic increases guaranteed from high school bonding and town employee wage contracts approved by the prior Democrat-led Town See Letters / Page A21

Anthony Marzi, a star pitcher at Berlin High School and UConn, is hoping to regenerate his career in the Atlantic League with the New Britain Bees after being cut by the New York Yankees. | Justin Weekes / For the Record-Journal
The Bees go local Just how local are our local sports teams? It turns out, for many, the answer is not very. Let’s take a look at some Connecticut college basketball teams, for instance. The UConn men’s 2015-16 squad included just two players for Connecticut, and the women’s team had one. Even the Central Connecticut State University hoops programs — which, of course, don’t have nearly the recruiting reach that UConn does — weren’t exactly overflowing with local talent this past season. The CCSU women’s team featured one Connecticut player on its roster, and the Blue Devil men had exactly zero. Yes, a great many “local” teams are local in name and zip code only. This is why it has been so refreshing to see the New Britain Bees — a professional team — signing one baseball player after another with Connecticut ties for their inaugural season. “We want as many local kids as we can that are good ballplayers,” Bees manager Stan Cliburn said. The Bees’ roster includes Southington native and Xavier High School graduate Nick Greenwood, Berlin High School grad Anthony Marzi,
Bristol Eastern alum Kevin Rivers, and Jovan Rosa, out of East Hartford. Other Bees are Josh Zeid, a New Haven native who attended Hamden Hall, Cole Johnson, an Ohio native living in Newington, and Anthony Hewitt, who prepped in Connecticut at the Salisbury School. Now this is a “local” team. “We’re excited about the players with local ties that we’ve announced for the inaugural roster,” Bees media relations manager Chris Knoblock said. “There is some fantastic homegrown talent that will don Bees uniforms this season.” The Bees, who call New Britain Stadium home, are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball. So, for many Bees, New Britain will be their last stop in the sport. But this opportunity allows them to stay on the radar for a while longer, and potentially draw the attention of the guys with big checkbooks. Players refusing to give up on the dream. A team with serious local flavor. This is something to cheer about. This editorial was published originally in the Meriden Record-Journal

where their nests are located. They completely ignored the crowd gathered to watch them come ashore. Once the penguins reached their nests, a brief preening session was followed by vocalizing for their mates to also return to the nest. As the evening grew later, the air was filled with the vocalizations of dozens of Little Penguins calling their mates home from a day at sea. I was amazed to see how far some of the penguins walked to their nests leaving trails of erosion over time. In fact, as visitors, we

walked many yards to the bus in the parking lot at the end of the evening. Before departing, the bus driver looked under the bus because some young penguins have been known to become lost and wander into the parking lot. An all-day excursion took me to the Great Ocean Road for spectacular views along the Port Campbell National Park in Victoria. The Twelve Apostles, London Arch and the Loch Ard Gorge are limestone rock formations constantly being shaped by the ocean waves. Erosion created caves in the soft limestone cliffs which eroded into arches that eventually collapsed into
rock stacks up to 164 feet high. Despite having only nine stacks originally, the Twelve Apostles became a popular tourist attraction given the close proximity of the rock stacks to each other. Currently, only eight apostles are standing after one collapsed in 2005. London Bridge was a double span natural bridge prior to the collapse of the arch connecting the bridge with the mainland in 1990. That collapse caused the structure to be renamed London Arch. The Loch Ard Gorge is named for the ship that ran aground at the site in 1878. The arch that connected the two rock pillars collapsed
in 2009. The two pillars are now referred to as Tom and Eva in memory of the only two survivors of that shipwreck.

The incredible beauty of the vistas along the Great Ocean Road certainly left a lasting impression!

Drug ‘Take Back’ initiative The Berlin Police Department, in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Agency, has scheduled its annual “Take Back” initiative to remove expired and unused prescription drugs from homes for Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the upper parking lot of the Berlin
Town Hall, 240 Kensington Road. Last year, Berlin’s efforts collected over 200 pounds of expired and unused prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous and no questions will be asked. Residents need only drive up the Town Hall driveway to drop
substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction. Unused medicine that is flushed down the drain can result in contamination of groundwater and surface water. For more information, contact Sgt. John McCormack, Berlin Police Department, at 860-828-7191.

Do you really want windows made of the same material as your shower curtain? Low-end vinyl windows are made from the same material as your shower curtain. • To help prevent drafts, we made our composite Fibrex® window material two times stronger than vinyl.
We are the full-service replacement window division of Andersen. • Multiple companies working in your home can be frustrating, but we’re the company that does it all: we sell, build and install your windows. • Most other window warranties won’t cover you completely. Our double warranty covers both your windows and your installation too.
