Distracted drivers pay the price By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

The southbound lane of the Berlin Turnpike was heavy with traffic Wednesday afternoon, April 27, as drivers got a wake-up call from the Berlin Police Department. Officer Kathy Griffin and Lt. Chris Ciuci, both “spotters,” observed drivers on their phones and called in violations to the officers further down the road. Within 10 minutes they saw nearly 15 drivers breaking the law. “This gets the message out there,” said Lt. Jim Gosselin. Since the distracted driving crack-down, funded by a state Berlin PD caught more than 400 people on the turnpike using their phones in April during a distracted driving crack-down. coach Dan Lee with the assistance of a proactive board of directors. The Foundation, according to its website, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “honor the enduring spirit of a special young man by actively seeking out opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.” Ryan T. Lee died on April 26, 2011, one day after being struck by a motor vehicle on the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University. He was attending LIU on a golf scholarship after graduating from Berlin High in 2009. He also captained the Redcoats’ varsity basketball team. Last Thursday, after breakfast, the students participated in leadership building activities organized by Jim O’Rourke, executive director of the Greater Waterbury YMCA.

They attended a panel discussion featuring UConn’s former All-American point guard and ex-University of Hartford women’s coach Jen Rizzotti and Yale football coach Tony Reno. It was moderated by NBC Connecticut sports director Kevin Nathan, “We’ve been really fortunate to get a real good selection of leaders to come meet with our students the last couple of years,” Dan Lee said. “I’m always amazed when I make the phone calls how many people say yes. [Rizzotti, Reno and Nathan], if I said their lives were busy would be an understatement. It’s not like they have a whole bunch of time on their hands, but they make time for things that matter. We really appreciate that they felt that this mattered.” The students broke into small groups for lunch, which featured a community leader at every table. Numerous coaches were among them, including Cheshire graduate

Among the words that kept coming up as Rizzotti, Reno and Nathan helped define the principles of leadership was selflessness. “Personalities are different, so every person in this room has a different mindset on leadership,” Reno said. “It’s what makes the world so great and what makes us great as individuals. The first thing is to be invested into the group, the organization and the leadership of the team. If you’re invested, it means you’re willing to put yourself last. It means you’re always willing to look at the organization first and do what’s best See Event / Page A3

Event the beginning of the Foundation’s calendar year, which includes its primary fundraiser, the Ryan T. Lee Golf Classic, slated for August 12 at Timberlin Golf Course in Berlin. A food drive will be held in July. A New Britain back-toschool event providing supplies for those in financial need is scheduled for August. Last September, the Foundation added the Ryan T.

Lee Collegiate Golf Tournament, which brings 12 college teams to Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury for a three-day weekend. A 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a blood drive will take place in the fall. The Foundation’s season ends by spreading some holiday cheer in the region. “We’ve got a busy year but a fulfilling year, without a doubt,” Dan Lee said.

themselves last for the team.” Putting social media in perspective was a subject that students and leaders broached periodically. “In one of my classes we’re doing a research project on social media and narcissism, and this directly relates to the topic,” said Platt junior Drew Siebert, who plays interscholastic golf and roller hockey more or less on a recreational basis. “Specifically, what I’ve been looking into is you want to share about you. You don’t necessarily want to see what they’re doing. Everyone wants those ‘likes.’ If you’re not getting the amount that you want, your photo or post was not good enough. That, in my opinion, has shifted our whole generation into being more selfish than selfless.” The conference marked

for it.” That quality could be measured to its highest standards in Dan Lee’s establishment of a foundation to help others after he and his family mourned Ryan’s passing. He said the board of directors — people who knew Ryan in different facets of his life, like his best friend and teammate John McNair — inspired him to reach out in a humanitarian way that Ryan would have cherished. Another key word is respect. “You’re not going to be able to lead if you’re not respected by your peers,” said Rizzotti, who recently accepted the head coaching position at George Washington University. “There are a lot of different ways to garner respect among your peers and being invested is one of the best ways, but also through communication ... “So much of what I learned [from playing under Geno Auriemma] had nothing to do with basketball. I needed to know my teammates, have them trust me and have them be willing for me to push their buttons. Most of the time I was pretty fiery, but I think my best moments were when my teammates looked me in the eye and knew what came out of my mouth was worth listening to.” Rizzotti also explained the importance of putting peer pressure in its proper place. “You have to do things that are hard when it’s not

easy to do them. Sometimes that’s about decision-making and sometimes that’s about standing away from the rest, standing above the crowd and making decisions you know are right,” Rizzotti said. The impact of the event hit home with a trio of athletes from Cheshire, Southington and Platt. “I’ve captained two sports (soccer and basketball) and I liked giving my part of it,” said Cheshire’s Ciara Haensel. “Years from now I’ll realize that helping all these people helps better our community. [Ryan’s death] was so sad, but it’s amazing that something like this can come out of it.” M i k e D e Fe o p l a y e d the same two sports at Southington. “At Southington, we chase excellence all the time and this is something that’s a big part of it,” he said. “Leadership is about being a role model, someone everybody looks up to and appreciates. Everyone has to respect someone and it’s a big role. People have to be able to put

He noted that a zero increase would have been welcomed. Laura Niemczycki, a resident of Berlin for three years, was also not in agreement with the budget increase. “I am concerned about the high school budget, because in the November election I talked to some of the Town Council candidates and they stated that ‘we are on budget, no problem,’” she said. “We’re only on budget because they got money from the state. But did we get any extra value for that money or is it going to cover over-runs and costs?” Niemczycki wasn’t the only one wondering about the state’s role in the local budget. Kaczynski cautioned that with Connecticut’s ongoing financial crisis that this may not be the end of budget talks. “Hopefully it’s not bittersweet, and we will see what happens, but somehow I don’t think this is the final budget,” the mayor stated. Though nothing is final-

ized, Gov. Dannel Malloy proposed, at the beginning of April, cutting the Education Cost Sharing grant in Berlin by approximately $320,000. He also made further recommendations to cut the revenue sharing fund by nearly $1 million. “My fear is for the next couple years based on the state,” Kaczynski said, Opinions on Berlin’s budget were not all negative as one resident told this reporter she was pleased with the current number. “I was glad that they went back and brought it down,” said Pamela DiMatteo, “because everybody is sacrificing and it’s a quality of life issue.” DiMatteo, like many residents at the polls who expressed worry over the high school project, said that those school renovations needed to finish up soon. Kaczynski stated that the budget process for the next fiscal year will start earlier, and once the high school is complete, the council might

Berlin residents had mixed reactions to the budget, but it passed April 26 with well over half the vote.

Drivers Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division grant, got underway at the beginning of April, there have been 401 drivers caught talking on their phones and an additional 186 pulled over for texting. The checkpoints were conducted on three weekdays during the morning into the afternoon, and then again during the afternoon into the evening hours. “A lot of these people are commuters going to work and coming from work,” Gosselin said. The largest number of

both cellphone and texting violations came from first time offenders. For second offenders, there were 21 for cell phone talking and ten for texting. Third offenders were in the single digits. The price for being pulled over for the violations is steep. Drivers who are first offenders have to pay $150, second offenders pay $300, and third offenders hand over $500. However, even with the hefty costs, Gosselin has seen second and third offenders pulled over only a few weeks prior for the same violation. “The problem is getting worse and worse,” he said.

The area has had the highest number of crashes in town and continues to be dangerous, as stated in the grant application for the 2016 check points. In 2015 there were 45 reported motor vehicle crashes that occurred on the turnpike at Deming Road. This was 10 crashes more than the 2014 report from the same location. Last Wednesday, Griffin spotted a female driver talking on her phone at the beginning of the afternoon shift. She reported the position of the phone in relation to the steering wheel, and even recalled the license plate number. Ciuci wrote it down in a log book. Griffin radioed it in to the officers, “chasers,” parked down the road. One of the chasers turned his siren lights on and was inching closer to the road. As soon as the driver passed, the police car followed her and pulled her over. “Eventually we should see a change in that behavior

ported in 2015 compared to only 16 from the previous year. “We are making a greater impact, I feel, by using the same two southbound lanes and making that our sole effort,” Gosselin noted. He’s not the only one that sees the turnpike as a major problem. People on social media voiced their concern about drivers around them on their phones nearly causing accidents. The grant cites 60 percent of accidents as being caused by “following too close” which Gosselin stated can be caused by distracted drivers. Berlin officers did not only catch drivers on their cell phones last month. During the crack-down, nine suspended licenses were discovered, two drug arrests were made, and a fugitive was caught. Also, drivers were cited with some 30 motor vehicle violations. Spotters Griffin and Ciuci further observed drivers making left hand turns into heavy traffic when the light was red. Thanks to the grant, Berlin police will continue their distracted driving crack-down in August. “The highest crashes are here,” Gosselin said, “and we are trying to stop as many of those crashes, injuries, and deaths from occurring as we can.”

Pet retailer to move into Berlin Turnpike space By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen

PetSmart will be moving into vacant space in Brickyard Plaza on the Berlin Turnpike, according to Berlin Economic Development Director Chris Edge. “There are a lot of people in town who own pets and this fits in nicely,” Edge said. The space was formerly a discount clothing store next to Michaels art supplies, but has been empty for more than a year. The plaza, at 259 Berlin Turnpike, also includes a Kohl’s and Home Depot. PetSmart is slated to open

in the fall adding to its more than 1,400 locations in North America. The retailer will offer pet services in addition to supplies and will occasionally host pet adoption days on site. “We are thrilled that PetSmart will be bringing its wide selection of products and services to the residents of Berlin,” Mayor Mark Kaczynski said. “I look forward to another great pet food retailer joining our business community.” A.S. Labieniec Feed and Grain Store on Farmington Avenue also offers a selection of pet supplies.

Casner memorial set for May 18 The Berlin Police Department Honor Guard plan to lay a wreath on the grave of Officer Jeffery Casner to commemorate the 31st anniversary of his death in the line of duty. Officer Casner was struck and killed by a drunk driver who went off the roadway on the Berlin Turnpike on Feb. 2, 1985. This ceremony is held annually to pay respects, police say, “to our fallen brother and his family.”

Opinion Berlin Historical Society schedules seventh installment of Story Share The Berlin Historical Society will present another slide show of vintage photos on Wednesday, May 18, 1 to 3 p.m., at the Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive. The program is the seventh in a series of Story Shares highlighting the history of neighborhoods and communities of Berlin. The focus of this session will be the northern Chamberlain Highway and adjacent neighborhoods of Turkey Hill, Percival Avenue, High Road over to West Lane, Ragged Mountain and Mooreland Hill. To register for this free event, call 860-828-7006. Before the Story Share covering South Kensington, someone commented there would be little to say about that part of town. “It’s just farms, isn’t it?” Well, that slide show and the story-telling from the audience was the most detailed yet. Over 125 enthusiastic residents attended. We are finding there is so much to say,

when you look back in time, no matter what part of town we focus on. The next Story Share program covers territory associated with Kensington’s own Nelson Augustus Moore (1824-1902) who was born on Sheldon Street and lived his adult life on High Road. Moore saw beauty close to home, creating pastoral scenes of dam ponds, apple orchards, fields and hills. Views of Turkey Hill were a particular favorite. In the mid 20th century, the western side was developed, while the eastern side has, so far, remained untouched. We’ll talk about the history of this hill. Some say it was a burial site for native Americans. It’s certain N.A. Moore felt reverence for it. Atop a sister landmark, Mooreland Hill, it was still possible to attend Easter Sunrise Services in the 1960s and not be standing in someone’s yard. The verdant view extended five miles to the Hanging

Painting by Nelson Augustus Moore. Hills of Meriden. We’ll also talk about the brilliant and eccentric state geologist and poet, James Gates Percival, whose family home, a mustard colored saltbox, stands on the street that bears his name. This is a neighborhood with curb appeal, having mature trees, charming homes of varied styles, one of our two original meeting houses, the first permanent Civil War Monument, Paper Goods Pond, the old Hart’s Donut Bakery house, and the first Kensington Town Hall, adaptively reused as the first Percival

School, and now a house. This part of Kensington was the home of Ferndale Dairy, the dairy taking its name from the area known as “Ferndale.” We’ll talk about the dairy bar, and about the Horbal and Berger farms, and community oriented businesses like Kensington Garden Center, Brierley Johnson Florist, Roger’s Marketplace, and others concentrated in Ferndale. Anticipation is high for the new Ferndale Market Fresh, another family-owned grocery opening soon in Roger’s spot. We

Maybe you remember West Lane in the days when it was a favorite spot to “park.” Maybe you remember seeing mysterious gravestones or an abandoned road east of Turkey Hill, or you’ve hiked to the old cement mill dam. Who knows what we will hear when people raise their hands. The public is invited to bring memories and photos to share. — By Lorraine Stub of the Berlin Historical Society

lieve that if we can learn from our experiences of the past, we can forge a better future. I explained to Shannon that I have spent many hours of my leisure time over the last 20 years watching old movies and documentaries that provide me a glimpse into the past. Sure, you know what you learned in school, and reading up on the past certainly is essential in developing a keen analytical mind. But they’re not enough. Among our great contemporary documentarians is Ken Burns. I’m awestruck that so few youngsters — people in general — know who he is. If you’re among the uninformed, Burns launched his portrayal of America with “The Civil War.” He brilliantly used still photos, scintillating camera techniques and wonderful narrators to make up for the lack of footage not available from those days. “Baseball” followed, then “Jazz” and “World War II,” which followed the experiences of four families from different parts of the nation, including the Ciarlos of Waterbury. Burns did one on “Prohibition,” “The Dust Bowl,” “Mark Twain,” “The National Parks: America’s Best

Idea,” “The Roosevelts” and most recently a more honest portrayal of “Jackie Robinson” than the movies about him revealed. Each of Burns’ films should be the foundation of social studies curricula in our schools if they’re not already. Burns’ work added to my previous conception of life during bygone era that I continue to glean through watching classic movies. You try to look beyond the Hollywood dramatics to absorb how life was before the automobile, modern medicine, electricity, television and radio. You get a glimpse at the American West, the world of the pirates (Errol Flynn, not Johnny Depp), the Europe that Charles Dickens knew, etc. I love to share these things with youngsters who’ll listen because I’d like them to be able to shape their future on knowledge of the past like I’ve done. I’m here to report through interaction with Shannon and Platt golfer Drew Siebert and my interpretation of Thursday’s event that failure isn’t as imminent as I once thought it was. Some of the so-called millennials are willing to listen to what fossils like we baby boomers have to say, and ever moreso to the wonderful guests Cheshire coach

and teacher Dan Lee brought in to work with the kids, Kevin Nathan of NBC Connecticut Sports, legendary UConn point guard Jennifer Rizzotti and Yale football coach Tony Reno. Through the expertise of Rizzotti, Reno, Nathan and Geno Auriemma, who regaled this very conference two years ago, I can see how some of our great high school coaches in attendance — Don and Kristine Drust (Cheshire football and softball, respectively), Dave and Steve Yanosy (Southington boys and Berlin girls soccer, respectively), Joe Lombardo (Hartford High baseball), Sheila King (Berlin girls basketball), Stan Glowiak (New Britain boys basketball retired), Mike Drury (Southington football) — built their philosophical foundations. That enables me to write more insightful stories for our readers. Please allow me to end this discussion with the way I probably should have started it. Dan Lee and his family suffered through the most painful experience a living being can possibly endure, the loss of a child. Ryan was 19. He was intelligent, he was athletic, he was compassionate. He was a great student, a fabulous athlete and the kind of best friend anybody would love to have. I know others who have lost chil-

dren who can’t shake the torment. I’m sure I’d be among them if I was so tragically affected. But the Lees went through their time of grief, talked with those who knew Ryan best and from the ashes of despair rose a phoenix that so artfully painted the picture I saw in that window to the future Thursday. The Lees, the Foundation’s Board of Directors and all those who support the many endeavors that the Foundation promotes are pillars of contemporary society. It’s easy to build an opinion based on those decapitating innocent people in the Middle East, the deranged few who inflict violence in schools, the mindless adults who influence the former by violently protesting at Trump rallies and despots who satisfy their own perverted needs at the expense of their innocent subjects. For every one among the foolish, the ignorant and the evil, we have the insightful, the visionaries and the good who outnumber them, but do so in relative obscurity. We are all in debt to the Ryan T. Lee Foundation, and not just the people who benefit directly from its benevolence. All of us benefit because it shapes our culture. – Published originally in the Meriden Record-Journal.

The Berlin High School band is a creative outlet and opportunity unlike any other in the school or town. To be able to sit down with your peers and make music is something special. We are all united under the passion of the art, and the band is what brings us together. The BHS band has had many great opportunities to perform the music we have spent a great deal of time diligently practicing and perfecting. We have performed in various competitions both in Virginia Beach and Disney World the last couple of years. We will also be performing at our spring concert where the entire music department puts on a series of short programs to display their talent and hard work. Also within the BHS mu-

sic department is the Berlin High School Jazz Band which consists of the elite musicians of the high school. To hold a spot in the jazz band students must go through a rigorous audition process. The jazz band practices regularly and gives those students that are willing to truly dedicate themselves a special chance to make music. The Berlin High School Jazz Band not only performs and competes in all the events that the concert band performs in, but also has extra opportunities. This year alone we were fortunate enough to be able to perform at Infinity Hall in Norfolk. On top of that, the Jazz Combo traveled to Boston to compete in the Berklee Jazz Festival, a national jazz competition, where it placed fourth in its division. Both the Berlin High School Concert Band and Jazz Band will be performing at the annual Jazz with Pizazz

fundraiser on Saturday, May 21 at 6 p.m. in the new BHS B Gym. Throughout the evening guests not only have the opportunity to hear many jazz classics played by the high school musicians while enjoying gourmet desserts and beverages, but also will hear many professional musicians give an amazing performance of exciting jazz standards and funk classics. While appreciating the music, guests will also have the chance to bid on silent auction items ranging from musical instruments to gift cards for restaurants and local businesses, to park passes to Disney World. Tickets are available by contacting kc.rich@sbcglobal.net or 860-829-0418. A fee is charged for tickets. Limited tickets may also be available at the door at a slightly higher price. The writer is a Berlin High School senior.

Berlin Athletic Hall of Fame inducts Class of 2016 The Berlin Citizen

Friends and family gathered in large numbers Sunday, April 24 to acknowledge those who’ve helped make Berlin athletics stand out. The BHS Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony – held at the Aqua Turf in Southington – honored 10 individuals and four teams for their successes in sport, marking the Hall’s seventh class. “From the standpoint of having all the sports represented, and having some of the older and younger high school athletes that graduated in 2000 and 2001, I think it’s a nice cross section that we have,” Hall of Fame president Bart Bovee said. “Our committee does a great job of finding the information and they do a great job of selecting the applicants that come in.”

The honorees inducted were Enso Bighinatti (Class of 1940), Jim Capodice (’72), Tara Tonina Profitt (’83), Ann Regan Oliver (’85), Dave Stefanowicz (’93), Scott Meyer (’95), Rebecca Collis Dimauro (’00), Nate Tarsi (’01), Bob Tarigo (coach) and Joe Suranna (contributor). The golf teams of 1987, ’88, ’89 and ’90 were also inducted. The Hall now holds 84 total honorees and nine teams. “I was absolutely honored to be included with a number of athletes that have been inducted before,” said Stefanowicz, who played baseball and basketball in his time at Berlin High. “It was a real pleasant surprise for me to be included, especially with some of the guys that played baseball.” Not every member of the Class of 2016 took the same path towards being inducted. While nearly every honoree began leaving their athletic

mark while still in the confines of Berlin High, Profitt’s mark came after her days at BHS had come to a conclusion. Following a diving accident that left her paralyzed, Profitt wasn’t able to make her athletic presence known the traditional way. Instead, she became renowned for her accomplishments in a sport she was first introduced to as a Redcoat. “If you would have told me that after being exposed to table tennis to fulfill a physical education requirement to graduate from high school that I would go on to represent the United States as a US Paralympian twice and a member of several United States Paralympic teams, I would not have believed it,” Profitt said. The Hall of Fame event allowed all the athletes presSee HOF / Page A25

ent to reflect upon times of great accomplishments as members of the Berlin High community. It also gave incoming inductees a chance to look back on memories that weren’t made on a court or field of any kind, including Tarigo – who has 30-plus years of coaching experience with the girls volleyball team. “At one time, I was a coach that always stood up on the sidelines. And at the time, we weren’t allowed to stand up. So the girls one year bought me this chair – this camping chair,” Tarigo recalled. “They bought it for me, and that was where I sat. It was hard for me to get out of it, so they bought it for me to keep me seated.

“Matter of fact, they bought one for me and one for my assistant. We brought them to matches with us, put them next to the bench and we sat in them.” The opportunity to reconnect and revel in the rich history of Berlin athletics wasn’t taken lightly, as former teammates and coaches enjoyed each other’s company throughout the evening, recalling stories of yesteryear and celebrating the accomplishments of many. “It’s like a reunion here every year. You get different people coming in and then they get to meet and talk with everybody,” Bovee said. “You get to see different people and different classes. I think that’s what makes it special.”
