“These are unbelievable sacrifices that these men and women have made,” the mayor said, “we have to remember them.” Those that attend the service will be able to read about the different wars from plaques at the park as part of the ‘American Wars Walkway.’ The walkway was officially dedicated this past Veterans Day and features several major American wars. Berlin students will be a big part of the day’s events. After they are done marching We in Deliver the parade, the Berlin High School band will play during the 20-minute service at the park. “It’s amazing how the town supports us,” Colaresi said. “It meant so much to me, and to my classmates, to have that thread through the community,” he said. Superintendent David Erwin announced the new director after searching through a small pool of candidates for the unique position. “We were looking for someone energetic and enthusiastic who knew the program,” he said.
“I always wanted to come back and teach,” he said.
“People know him and that will serve as a real plus for him and especially for the kids,” Erwin said. The position was available since the winter, which was the first time the position was ever open.
While Rudy hopes to put his own spin on the program, he is also planning on bringing back some original aspects. “I would like to get it back to working more with different schools in the district,” he said.
He is also looking forward to taking ideas from the upcoming senior class and students who want to make some changes.

One change he has heard suggested would be to make some housing adjustments. The different student-led houses in Upbeat have individual focuses for activities and community service projects. Rudy says it’s all about giving
Leslie Blaser Bajorski and Mary Gurrieri of The Blaser Selling Team are ready to help you this Spring in making a move! I enthusiastically recommend Mary and the RE/MAX team for any residential real estate needs in the Middletown area. My fiancé and I had a very short window of time to find housing and move to the area to start her residency at Middlesex Hospital and Mary was able to quickly set up showings and get us the information we needed to make important decisions about housing. A big challenge of moving to a new area was learning the market and neighborhoods, and Mary effectively gave us the lay of the land and an education on the local housing market. I most appreciate that Mary had our best intentions in mind the whole time and was really a trusted advisor, not just a saleswoman. -Evan Oleson
“Any change in leadership, there’s challenges that come across,” he said, “the challenge is getting everyone on board.” Rudy’s position will become effective July 1 and he will officially be announced as the new director at the annual
Upbeat picnic Thursday, May 26 (from 5 p.m.until 8 p.m. at the Berlin fairgrounds.) It will be the last picnic for Mitchell as director and Rudy says he has her backing with his ideas. “It’s a bit surreal to follow her,” he said. “It’s a lot of pressure, but I’m excited.” — Ashley Kus

Alice Mitchell became director when the program started nearly 30 years ago. She witnessed the growth and interest in Upbeat as more and more students joined.
He envisions a division of the program in each school from middle school to elementary school.

Before he officially takes over Upbeat however, Rudy will be reprising his role for the seventh year as the director of summer programming for Berlin Parks and Recreation. Erwin says it’s his involvement in Berlin that make him the best person to take over for Mitchell.
“I’m excited to see the new and innovative stuff that can be brought to the table,” Rudy said.

Rudy has kept his roots in Upbeat by attending and helping to facilitate Upbeat leadership weekends for several years. He has also stayed in touch with his town even while going to college and getting a teaching job in Maryland.
Rudy says that he wants to spread the ideas of Upbeat to younger kids.

BPD to show film on addiction June 8 By Ashley Kus The Berlin Citizen
As opiate addiction becomes more and more of a problem in the state and nationwide, the Berlin Police Department wants to make sure residents in town are staying proactive. “We wanted to make the film available to the public,” said Deputy Chief John Klett. Berlin PD, in collaboration with Community Mental Health Affiliates, Inc., out of New Britain, and Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, will be hosting a showing of “Chasing the Dragon: Up Close and Personal.” The event will be held in the community room at the library at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8. The documentary film, released by the FBI and DEA, focuses on the reality of addiction with firsthand accounts from addicts and their families. The film has already been shown in high school classes and now Berlin PD wants the public to experience the impact of the stories as well. “It’s powerful and it’s designed to get your attention,” Klett said.
Besides the film, a client from CMHA will be speaking to the residents who attend. Shirley, a recovering addict, says she is very passionate about her message and looks forward to answering questions from the audience at the event. “One bad decision can take your life,” said Shirley, who requested that her last name not be used in this article. Shirley says that addiction starts with trauma and wanting to dull the pain, and then moves into lethal drugs like heroin. “You don’t just wake up and say I want to be an addict,” she said, “you come to this from where you are now.” She says her time with CMHA has brought her a new perspective and she is grateful to have been given the chance to recover. However, she says, some addicts are not that fortunate and often get worse before they get better. “People are dying, every time you hear through family and friends,” she said, “someone’s been touched by this disease.” Berlin PD is hoping the message is
clear and that students and their families will watch the film together. Though Klett says the event is not in response to any current problems in town, he believes it’s crucial to have discussions before it becomes a crisis situation. “We want to provide the tools to residents before they make a mistake,” he said. “We’re getting the awareness out there.” The Berlin PD has been expanding its resources to deal with potential situations in town. This past winter officers were trained to assemble and administer Intranasal Naloxone, an anti-overdose medication known as Narcan. “The main goal is to reduce fatalities and morbidity which would be brain damage,” Lt. James Gosselin said during a training session. Currently several emergency personnel in nearby towns carry Narcan including firefighters in Meriden, Wallingford, and Southington. Klett says the upcoming event will draw more awareness toward the epidemic and educate the public. See Film, A11

It’s a new ball game for coach Dan Lee By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
CHESHIRE — Dan Lee’s decade-long tenure on the Cheshire boys basketball sidelines came to an end on Thursday. Lee stepped down from his post to take an assistant principal’s position at the high school. Lee is also vacating his position as Cheshire’s boys golf coach. As with most schools, administrators at Cheshire can’t serve as coaches. Lee’s official appointment — and concommitant resignation — were made official at Thursday’s Cheshire Board of Education meeting.
“The job posted this spring and opportunities like this don’t come around very often and I applied,” Lee said. “I will bring lessons from the sidelines to my new position,” Lee added. “With my new position, I won’t be able to coach and that was the toughest decision in the whole process. I contemplated it, but this is a good move for me and my family.” Lee, 47, has spent 28 years in coaching. His first job was as the assistant boys basketball coach at Goodwin Tech in New Britain at age 19. “I wouldn’t be where I am right now if I didn’t have the opportunity to start coaching at Goodwin Tech,” Lee said. He was head coach of the New Britain tech school for three years before moving on to Cheshire, where took a job as a physical education teacher. He was an assis-

tant boys basketball coach under Nick Carparelli for six winters before taking over the head job 10 years ago. Carparelli was head coach at Cheshire for 25 seasons. Lee’s basketball teams went 107-105. They were particularly successful over the last three seasons, winning the SCC Housatonic championship in each. “I’m losing a valuable coach,” Cheshire athletic director Steve Trifone said Thursday morning. “He’s a good coach and a good person and he will do very well
as an administrator. “He’s such a mentor to our teams in so many ways other than basketball,” Trifone added. “But now he will be working with a whole new different group of kids.” Lee has established a leadership-building program at the school in memory of his late son, Ryan. He was named the Cheshire Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 2012. Lee, who lives in Berlin, said he would remain around Cheshire athletics in some capacity.
“Coaching will always be a part of my life,” Lee said. Lee will be missed not only by Cheshire, but also by his rivals. Sheehan boys hoop coach Joe Gaetano said Lee’s teams were always a challenge. “We’ve had some great games against them in his tenure,” Gaetano said. “His teams were always tough. They’ve had some great seasons under Dan and he’s a class act, a great guy and a good coach and did a great See Lee, A19

New technology tees off at Timberlin Golf Club By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Getting a lesson at Timberlin Golf Club just got a little more technical. John Vitale, the new director of instruction at the course, is comparing students to PGA players with the app ‘Hudl.’ “Seeing is believing,” he said. A Hawk’s Landing Head Golf Professional for years in Southington, Vitale recently made the switch to Timberlin to strictly teach the game. He’s been using video analysis for years during lessons and says it can be applied to all ages. On a recent Tuesday afternoon, Peter DeFazio, a golfer for 18 years and President of the Timberlin Men’s Golf Club, set out for his first lesson with Vitale. It was also DeFazio’s first time experiencing video analysis. Vitale observed DeFazio’s first few swings while recording him on an IPad Pro. DeFazio then came over to see the replay of his swings. Vitale used the app and

pulled a video up of former PGA Tour professional Andrew Putnam. He put it side by side with the video of DeFazio. “Your hands are pushed forward, and see with Andrew’s swing it continues back,” Vitale told DeFazio, “you need a little more shoulder turn.” Vitale drew lines on the touch screen comparing the posture and technique of the professional versus DeFazio. This happened a few times as Vitale went back and forth with DeFazio between his real-time practice and the
replays. To make the experience even more successful, Vitale was able to show DeFazio exactly what he was doing wrong, virtually, on the screen, and then physically back on the course. “What I want to see is the bottom of that swing to change. Practice is key,” Vitale said. The 2015 Connecticut PGA Teacher of the Year isn’t the only one utilizing technology to create stronger players. At Golf Quest in Southington, See Golf, A20
