of a list of items deemed “agriculturally related” after lengthy deliberations by the commissioners.
“I appreciate the commission and Hellyn Riggins efforts, thank you,” After months of uncertainty, Kensington Garden Center was approved garden center owner Alan Ellison said. Teacher is taking on Ironman race
By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
A Berlin teen whose life was cut short this past January will be memorialized when a street is named after him this summer. “I think it’s really special,” Rocco Labbadia said.
By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Labbadia’s 19-year-old son Christopher died tragically in a single car crash in January. Since then his family has been working to keep the teen’s memory alive.
On a recent day after teaching sixth grade math at McGee Middle School, Cindy Botticello rode her bike around Cromwell and then went for a run. The day before, she completed a five-hour bike workout.
The Labbadias recently set up a memorial scholarship fund with the recipients exemplifying “qualities that Chris lived his life by: Love, Acceptance, Loyalty, Passion and Laughter.”
“It’s a huge commitment, I’m giving up my free time,” Botticello said. She is training for the Ironman triathlon. Botticello will compete in the 140-mile event next month at Lake Placid, New York.
Now a new subdivision in Berlin near the Timberlin Golf Club on Southington Road will bear the Berlin High School alum’s name. Tom Coccomo of Coccomo

>> Street Coccomo had been involved with the naming of another street in Berlin, Lavery Lane, after Newington police officer Peter Lavery who was killed in the line of duty in 2004.
Brothers home builders in Berlin pitched the idea to the Labbadias about a month ago. “The young man did some summer work for us in the past,” Coccomo said. “It all came together.”
The teen went on to Keene State University where he was studying Occupational Safety and Health before his death. His family says

that this latest tribute to him means a lot.
Christopher Way will be officially dedicated Friday, July 15, at 4 p.m. A priest from Saint Paul Church, as well as the Labbadia family, and friends will be in attendance.

The commission went over items one at a time such as Christmas trees real and faux, tree ornaments, flags, flag stands, outside garden stools and benches, potpourri, and other such products. “It’s unfortunately because of the previous owners and lawsuits,” said Commissioner Kevin Murphy, standing in as chairman for Bruce Moore. Counsel Robert Weber. One of the options provided to the Ellisons was to proceed with a zone change which Pentore had stated was too drastic of a step. Riggins, the Development Services Director, went over the final list with the commission, which agreed to strike the terms “decorations” and “accessories,” as they believed them to be too ambiguous. The list was finalized with a little more than 20 items, not including nine items already approved.

Labbadia says his son’s experience working with Coccomo Brothers helped him learn real world skills.
The new street will be named Christopher Way. Coccomo says it is fitting since the location is near where the teen is buried.
“I think it’s great for people to get something positive out of this,” Labbadia said, “it reminds them to stay happy, healthy, and safe.”

Group works to rescue cats in central Connecticut By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
A group of local volunteers has organized to rescue cats in the central Connecticut area. The newly-formed nonprofit, Hearts United Cat Rescue, is working to save cats in Plainville, Berlin, Bristol, Southington, and Rocky Hill. Hearts United President Lynn Frigault, of Bristol, leads a team of a dozen or so dedicated animal lovers helping homeless and neglected cats. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 3.4 million cats enter shelters nationwide every year. About 37 percent are adopted, while 41 percent are euthanized. Hearts United aims to save cats that would otherwise

Lobster rolls, 5K contribute to festival’s success By Scott Hayes Special to the Record-Journal
The Kensington Congregational Church Festival on the Hill added a 5K road race Saturday to its popular food fare of lobster rolls and strawberry shortcake for its third annual event. The result was a steady flow of visitors along Percival Avenue, from the morning race that attracted 120 runners and many locals who treated themselves to fresh-made lobster rolls and homemade shortcake and strawberries topped with whipped cream. The festival, nestled among Kensington neighborhoods not far from the town’s Senior Center, Little League complex and Paper Goods Pond, attracted diverse vendors selling their wares and provided music throughout the day. “We’ve had a pretty steady crowd in spite of the rain, and I’m pleasantly surprised the rain didn’t do more to dampen our day,” festival co-chair Gwen McCann said as late afternoon sunshine dried church grounds after midday rain.

Brandon Therrien of Berlin was attending his first Kensington festival with his wife, Terri-Ann and their two children. Therrien was just finishing the festival’s main attraction, a lobster roll, at the food tent. “It was good, and the pulled pork’s pretty good, too,” Therrien said.

A selfless act With the country in the grip of an opioid epidemic, tragically, more and more young faces are showing up in newspaper obituaries. While guilt, embarrassment — shame, perhaps — prevent some families from mentioning drug addiction in death notices, others elect to lay out the whole truth for all to see. This a brave decision, and an important one. “This is part of a trend toward a greater degree of acceptance and destigmatization about issues pertaining to mental illness, including addiction,” said Dr. Jeffrey A. Lieberman, chairman of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He added, “If a family chooses to do this, they can have a cathartic experience that facilitates the grieving process. When the person was alive, they may have been enabling, and they couldn’t acknowledge it. But this allows them to begin that process of coming to terms with the fallibility of the family member and their own limitations in not having been able to deal with it while the person was alive.” One such obituary — that of 22-year-old Lisa Marie Andreana — recently appeared in The Berlin Citizen. In it, the young woman’s family wrote that she “entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, due to a heroin overdose after a long and courageous battle with addiction. While we are deeply saddened to see her go, we are relieved that her struggle has ended and she is now at peace.” The obituary concludes with “It is the family’s hope that the cruel disease of addiction will trend toward a broader degree of acceptance and destigmatization and a sense of urgency will be brought to this brutal health crisis affecting so many families. Lisa was a strong willed young lady who tried to fight addiction her way but ultimately lost the battle. We will love and miss her for the rest of our lives.” Detailing their daughter’s difficult journey in such a public manner was a selfless act on the part of the Andreana family. Their candor likely has sparked many difficult conversations about drugs and addiction, and may even save a life. — This editorial originally appeared in the Meriden Record-Journal.

last year. “I don’t return if it’s not good. They do a good job, and the food is great,” Pinto said. “I’ve already had the lobster and three strawberry shortcakes.” The inaugural Lobster Loop 5K started the day with favorable conditions for a race – cool temperatures and dry roads. Brody Secore of South Windsor finished first with a time of 17:02 on an uncertified course along Kensington’s rolling hills. Secore, 24, said he was looking for a road race as part of his triathlon training and learned of the Kensington race at his workout gym in Middletown. Secore, who ran collegiate track and cross country at Eastern Connecticut State University, finished 38 seconds ahead of runner-up Ray Martin. Mark Hughes of Second Wind Race Timing estimated the course to be short of 3.1 miles – 2.86 to be exact. Stacey Clark of Berlin finished first in the women’s division and seventh overall with a time of 19:20. “For a first-year race, I’m ecstatic,” race director Jennifer Calcagni said, noting that 70

Tips on how to make a tiny faerie door It’s no secret that here at Scraptivity we love faeries. Visit our shop and you will find houses, swings, gardens and much more devoted to our faeries. Oh! Did you see that? Over your shoulder just then? It was probably a tiny faerie looking for a little mischief!
We find the best way to live with them is to have plenty of things they like around within easy reach. Glitter, ribbons, flowers, shells, natural materials for building and garden creating. Line up eight Popsicle sticks. Take two more sticks and form the roof. Using a pencil, draw a line on an angle for the roof line. This is a bit tricky because you have not yet glued anything together and the sticks will want to move while you try to draw. An extra pair of hands here would be nice. Once lines are drawn, use your scissors or branch trimmers to snip the sticks to the right angle. Okay, hard part done. Line up your sticks in the correct order and glue one

*The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of 3.00% is variable based on the Prime Rate as published in The Wall Street Journal (3.50% as of 5/20/16) minus 0.25% plus an additional 0.25% rate discount when you arrange to have payments made automatically through ACH from your Farmington Bank personal checking account. If you cancel the auto pay during the life of the loan, the APR will revert back to Prime minus 0.25%. Without automatic payments from a Farmington Bank personal checking account, the APR would be 3.25% variable based on the Prime Rate minus 0.25% as stated above. The APR may vary and your minimum payment may increase or decrease. Offer applies to new Home Equity Lines of Credit on owner-occupied primary residences within the states of Connecticut and Massachusetts, is effective as of 5/20/16, and is subject to change at any time without notice. You can obtain credit advances for nine (9) years and ten (10) months during the “draw period” and make monthly interest payments (and principal if you wish). After the draw period ends, you will no longer be able to obtain credit advances and you must pay the outstanding balance, in monthly installments of principal and interest over the next twenty (20) years (the “repayment period”). The APR can never go below 0% with a maximum of 18%. A $50 annual fee applies. If you close (terminate) your Home Equity Line of Credit within 24 months of the original note date, an early termination fee will be imposed. The early termination fee will be the lesser of: Two (2) percent of the line amount or $500.00. There are no application fees on line amounts of $10,000 -$500,000. For amounts over $500,000, an appraisal is required and a fee applies. The minimum loan amount is $10,000. Maximum Combined Loan To Value (CLTV) is 80%. Property insurance and flood insurance, if applicable, are required to be maintained for the life of the loan. Loan is subject to credit approval. †Please consult your tax advisor regarding the deductibility of interest.

The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, recognizing young women who demonstrate a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Less than 6 percent of all eligible Girl Scouts earn this award yearly.
The Gold Award is given to Scouts who create and execute an intensive project that addresses a community need. To earn this honor, a Scout must use her organizational, leadership, project management and teamwork skills to complete a project that will have a sustainable impact in their communities and improve lives. The Gold Award requires a minimum of 80 hours of work and takes a year or longer to plan and implement.

HR Certification Scholarship awarded Berlin resident Andy Thiede, HR consultant at KardasLarson, presented her first HR Certification Scholarship to help an HR professional obtain Human Resource certification. During the May 2016 presentation ceremony at the Human Resource Association of Central Connecticut, the $500 scholarship was awarded to Turkessa Antrum.
a member of both organizations for more than 20 years. The board of advisors selected Antrum as the first recipient of the Andy Thiede HR Certification Scholarship. At the award ceremony, Thiede stated, “I couldn’t be more pleased with the team’s choice, and coincidentally, Turkessa and I have had similar paths. Like me, while working full-time, she attended college part-time to obtain a MS in HR Management, and an MBA. Turkessa also found time to volunteer with the Connecticut SHRM State Council as their membership director.”
With a passion for Human Resources, and a desire to give back to the profession, Thiede created this scholarship to help offset the expense of certification for an HR colleague. “I’m feeling ready for it,” Botticello said of the July 24 triathlon.
From A1
Her coach Kelli Montgomery is making sure the training is rigorous enough for Botticello to finish the triathlon. The Wallingford resident has trained many Ironman athletes over the past 20 years. “She’s not easily discouraged and she doesn’t give up,” Montgomery said of Botticello. “Not every athlete is like that.”
several in the U.S. Last summer Botticello finished her first half-Ironman and in January decided to give the whole challenge a try. She’s been training ever since, seven days a week for hours on end. The swimming, running, and biking will become even more intense as the event day draws closer.

Botticello said the Ironman is especially difficult because there is no way to recreate the race in practice. The event consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run. The support of her family and students and staff at McGee has helped.
