The Meriden YMCA board of directors and the Berlin-New Britain YMCA board of directors voted last month to merge starting June 30.

Local 9/11 memorial takes shape Travelers along Farmington Avenue will notice that work has begun on the 9/11 Memorial located at the Kensington Fire-Rescue fire house. Even at this early stage, the power of the memorial is apparent, as two of the three pieces of the World Trade Center to be included at it clearly embody the WTC towers. While the final completion date has yet to be determined, Chief Mark Lewandowski hopes to have a majority of the memorial completed by the 15th anniversary of 9/11, this coming September 11. — Lee Roski, submitted

Classes for children, like “Little Chef,” will also be offered in the fall as well as art programs. “We are going to try to mix it up,” Fitzgerald said. In the meantime, Fitzgerald and Goodman are looking at ways to further expand options for current and prospective members. The football field at Sage Park was illuminated Wednesday night, June 29 as paper bags filled with candles formed a heart around Nick Zuk’s jersey number 53. “The strongest fighter there will ever be,” said Wendi Zuk, his aunt. The 17-year-old Berlin High School student and varsity football player died Saturday, June 25 after a battle with leukemia. His classmates, teammates, family and friends gathered to mourn and remember him. A soundtrack of country, hiphop, and ballads played from the field speakers as loved ones decorated paper bags with messages for Zuk and filled them with tea lights to illuminate the night. “It takes a community to raise a child,” said Theresa Lee. Friends of Lee’s son Ryan held a similar service when he died in 2011. Lee says she is now paying it forward to the Zuks. “To be together is important,” she said. One of Zuk’s doctors was in attendance and told the audience at the memorial how strong a fighter the teen had been. Those words were echoed by Brianna Zuk before she sang “Yellow” by Coldplay in memory of her cousin. “He was always so strong,”

she said. “I’m so proud of him.” It wasn’t just his family that honored the BHS football player, his former teammates took the field to pay tribute to number 53. More than 60 current and former players who had played with Zuk lined up on the sideline in front of the illuminated heart and bags that formed

OPINION

Experts strike again By Glenn Richter Record-Journal staff

“I think Berlin is a community on the move.” That was Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, three years ago, announcing that the town of Berlin would be getting a $259,000 grant to make “Downtown Kensington” more pedestrian friendly, and thereby to attract businesses to the area around the train depot. “Downtown Kensington”? Well, the quotation marks are there because it’s really a stretch to call it that. It’d be pretty hard to find anything that might be called a downtown in Berlin, but the Kensington section of town does have its own little oneblock strip of Main Street that — if you squint a bit, and the lighting’s just right — could qualify. Sort of. I seem to recall coming home to the Berlin depot from New York one time, years ago, and looking out the window — at the Dairy Queen (which may have been a Dairy Delite back then) and Uncle Miltie’s Kensington Pharmacy and the Grand Central Restaurant and Perretta’s Shoe Store and the Star Barber Shop — and thinking that maybe I should stay on the train.

that they’ve narrowed one end of the street quite a bit, which could make it easier to cross. But you have to wonder whether the new brick walkways will catch the edge of the snow plows; and whether the bricks will stand up to the heaps of salt, or whatever it is that they throw on our roads these days; and whether the plow drivers will be able to steer clear of the skinny new islands, with their spindly trees; and whether those trees can endure the salt; and, if they can, what will happen when they get bigger and start pushing up the granite curbs that hold them in. Another purpose was attracting business, but the new bump-outs eliminate several parking spaces. (Business people in downtown Meriden hated the bump-outs when the street-design experts installed them, some years back. We’ll see what happens this time.)

But only one or two storefronts in downtown Kensington look like they may be vacant. Otherwise, the number of buildings seems to be the same — minus the longago Kensington National Store, which is now a driveway for one of the banks. There was another small strip “What are they doing to Main of shops, if you went under Street?” the railroad overpass and around the corner, but they That was Berlin Town Manwere torn down some time ager Denise McNair, last ago, for reasons that were month, reporting on some of the phone calls she’s been less than obvious; maybe for the new police station that getting lately, now that the Main Street Investment Fund never got built. grant is finally bearing fruit And I’m concerned that and construction is underolder drivers (OK, that inway. One of the stated purposes of this little municipal makeover was pedestrian safety — even though there are no cross streets — but it’s true

But we’ll just have to see how it turns out. Reach Glenn Richter at grichter@record-journal.com.

Letters to the Editor Not a perfect project To the editor: I’m sending this email regarding your coverage of the repaving project. I live on this road. While the newly-paved road is a big improvement, the whole length of the road has burned grass and large sections of brown leaves on most of the trees, on both sides of the street. It’s very unsightly, and I would not be surprised if homeowners along the street are going to contact the city. Hopefully this type of repaving is not as harmful to the next road as this one was. Gina Leo Meriden

A history of service To the editor: Constables in the State of Connecticut have a long history, reaching back to 1650. The origins of the Office of Constable can be traced back to England. Constables are authorized to serve and execute any and all civil processes outlined in state statute. However, historically, their primary role in society focused on the preservation of peace and tax collection. Constables in Berlin were established in 1916. At that time, constables played the role of both peace keepers and to handle unlawful activity in the Town of Berlin. In 1937, Berlin formed a police bureau, supervised by four Berlin constables. This bureau served as the only form of police protection in town. In 1955, the Connecticut legislature passed legislation authorizing the creation of a police department for the town. It also was a significant year, seeing the purchase of the town’s first police cruiser. The role of town constable has played an important part in the functioning or our towns and cities across the State of Connecticut, including Berlin, for the last several years. The Town of Berlin currently has seven active town constables, assisting the town in various capacities, such as

collecting delinquent taxes, as authorized under town charter and state statutes. Most notably, the town constables, holding true to tradition, stand in full support of the 42 professional police officers protecting the Town of Berlin. Joe Motta Berlin constable

Under attack To the editor: Berlin’s seven town constables are under attack by Denise McNair, Berlin town manager. McNair submitted a request to our Town Charter Revision Committee in May 2016 requesting the elimination of all seven of Berlin’s tax-paying constables or to limit the constables down to only two. McNair claimed there were two town offices involved. I surmise that the two offices involved are Denise McNair’s (town manager’s office) and our tax office (David Kluczwski.) Whose interest is Denise McNair and David Kluczwski looking out for? Not Berlin tax-payers or the seven Berlin tax-paying constables. Berlin constables have the authority under the Town Charter and state statues on collection of delinquent taxes owed to Berlin. Delinquent taxes outstanding as of Feb. 25, 2016 (information provided from McNair and Kluczwski) was $1,736,189.79 of unpaid taxes and $126,928.79 on the Berlin Tax Suspense list dating back to 2013. This starts back to 10-plus years ago with our other town government bringing in attorneys to collect taxes and eliminate the constables. To the mayor of Berlin and the Town Council, we need changes now. Save our seven Berlin tax-paying constables and let them serve Berlin well. In 1916, constables were the law enforcement and tax collectors. Save their heritage. John O’Brien Berlin constable

Town receives grant for property assessment By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

A $35,600 grant was awarded to the town by the state, Thursday, June 30, in order to continue the investigation of 73 Woodlawn Road. “We would love to see it back in productive use,” said Chris Edge, economic development director for Berlin. The Berlin Youth Theatre debuts with ‘Willy Wonka’ By Sebastian Gronback Special to The Citizen

After seven weeks of rehearsals, the Berlin Youth Theatre presented its first musical, “Willy Wonka Jr.” at McGee Middle School on June 25.

Based on the classic children’s novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl, the production was organized by the Berlin YMCA in conjunction with the Meriden Youth Theatre. The new Berlin program services youngsters from Berlin and Meriden in grades K-8. Amy Fitzgerald, program director for the Berlin YMCA, remarked on the growth of the theatre program in the area. “Seventy kids worked on this production, when 10 years ago it might have just been 10 kids,” she said. “It shows that they’ll go wherever they can to follow their passion.” The show was managed by nine young directors – teens and previous players – including Bryan Brazel, a former Meriden Youth Theatre performer now working with the staff.

Health News Volunteers needed The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program is looking for volunteer drivers throughout Connecticut to transport cancer patients to and from treatments. Some treatments will not allow cancer patients to operate machinery, including a motor vehicle. Other patients do

not have family members they can rely on for support, or their family may simply not be able to take time away from work. Volunteers should be available once a month or once a week, be age 18-85, have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with insurance. For information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

across the board, from the greedy contestants in Wonka’s factory to the kind Bucket family; especially the young Addison Whiteside as a joyous Charlie Bucket. When the chocolate factory was finally revealed – a colorful set created by the parents – it set the musical off on a magical trip through the factory. “It was so much fun, everyone was so nice and the Oompa Loompas were adorable,” Roche said after the show. “The cast was fantastic and I enjoyed every second of working with them.”

Personalized care in a comfortable environment

Although this year’s show for the Berlin Youth Theatre is over, the merger of the New Britain-Berlin YMCA and the Meriden YMCA on June 30 means that the door for future performances is open. The Meriden Youth Theatre will be running programs throughout the summer, including “High School Musical Jr.” and “The Wiz,” providing opportunities for kids who wish to experience theatre. “I’m usually a parent,” Fitzgerald said, “but working on the employee side, I’ve been impressed by how hard the kids work in the time that they have.”
