The police department removed an article blaming the Black Lives Matter movement for increased crime from its Facebook page after the post drew criticism from some residents, a town councilor and the NAACP. The article titled “The Danger of the Black Lives Matter Movement” was taken down late Wednesday, July 13. Police also issued the following statement: “The intent to post the ... article was to show crime numbers (murder) in urban areas that are not widely published elsewhere and to show the difficulties police face in reducing crime. No support for a political position or insensitivity was intended.”
“Out of a tragedy we’ve seen so much love and support,” said Lynn Labbadia. “It’s really been amazing.”
The Labbadias recently set up a memorial scholarship fund with the recipients exemplifying “qualities that Chris lived his life by: Love, Acceptance, Loyalty, Passion and Laughter.”

Parishioners from the Berlin Congregational and Kensington Congregational churches are pictured following a recent meeting of the Family Promise of Central Connecticut project – a venture in which the two churches are collaborating. The organization, which relies on places of worship offering space to “host” homeless children and their families for week-long overnight stays on a periodic basis, is now in the formation stage and is expected to become fully operational later this year. Berlin Congregational has been designated as a host congregation where individuals will stay, while Kensington Congregational will serve as a support congregation. Letters to the Editor Growth takes times To the editor: Mr. Richter, with all due respect to your opinion regarding the Kensington Main Street improvements that are taking place, I have to ask myself how someone can be so negative about efforts to improve and promote growth opportunities here in the town of Berlin. I agree that Berlin is not your typical colonial town with center greens, etc. However, state and local officials are looking for long term, proven methods, to stimulate growth and opportunities. There are many challenges to be met in a small town with demographics that cannot be compared to other surrounding towns. As a citizen of Berlin, I am excited by the potential growth that will come from the development surrounding the train station improvements, including my support for the new police station. Growth takes time to understand and support, it involves a bigger picture for the future. In closing Mr. Richter, narrow opinions and negative sarcasm are not the tools of quality journalism. John F. Bergman Kensington
We look forward to the annual tournament next year. Golfers, mark your calendars for June 16. Again, we thank the Berlin community, friends and family for their continued support. The Manzi Family
People over politics To the editor: I am writing this in support of Sharon Beloin-Saavedra’s campaign to be the next State Senator for the 6th district. As an in-state college student at UConn, and a Berlin resident, Sharon’s stances on education and politics is why I am backing her candidacy. Her positions on education, funding and college affordability are timely and appealing. Further, Sharon believes that when citizens become involved in the political process, change for the better is inevitable. Please join me in voting for a candidate that has put people first and will legislate accordingly. Megan Leavenworth Berlin

Aresimowicz is recognized for patient advocacy efforts House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin/Southington) was honored by the Radiological Society of Connecticut for his advocacy of legislation that will enable policymakers to closely track the access of patients to needed imaging and radiology services. The legislation, Special Act 16-17/ Senate Bill 295, An Act Concerning Radiological and Imaging Services, requires the Commissioner of Social Services to provide data on utilization trends in radiological and imaging services in the Medicaid program to the Council on Medical Assistance Program Oversight. The Radiological Society of Connecticut also cited Aresimowicz for his support of legislation that will improve breast cancer detection.

Planning and Zoning Commission, the addition of a Board of Finance, and budget referendums. The overall goal of the charter revision, which was brought up on July 12 before the hearing, was to improve transparency and accountability as well as providing checks and balances with separation of powers. “These charter changes presented today help make the taxpayers’ voices and votes matter,” said Kari Drost, secretary for the commission. Former Board of Education President Gary Brochu questioned why changes that had been spoken out about last time, like the partisan board, were still part of the current draft. “I have to confess, I’m at a loss,” he said. “What problem are we solving?” Steve Anderson, a resident, also questioned what issues the commission was trying to solve. “There’s nothing fundamentally flawed with our present 21st century form of government,” he said. “I would suggest that if it isn’t broken

Health News Volunteers needed The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program is looking for volunteer drivers throughout Connecticut to transport cancer patients to and from treatments. Some treatments will not allow cancer patients to operate machinery, including a motor vehicle. Other patients do not have family members they can rely on for support, or their family may simply not be able to take time away from work. Volunteers should be available once a month or once a week, be age 18 to 85, have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with insurance. For information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

The former Keene State University student was studying Occupational Safety and Health at the time of his death. His father says the goal of the memorial fund and latest tribute is to remind people be safe and happy. Tom Coccomo, of Coccomo Brothers home builders in Berlin, pitched the idea to name the new subdivision’s street after the Berlin High School alum. “When Tommy called me and asked me if it would be okay to name a street after your son, (I said) ‘yes, that would be fantastic,’” said Christopher’s father, Rocco Labbadia. “I broke down in tears, I was overjoyed.”
Friends, family, and former classmates then walked up the hill to where Labbadia is buried, at South End Burying Ground, to say a prayer and have a moment of silence. His father tearfully told the crowd that it has been a tough year, but he was grateful for everyone’s support. “What a great turnout, it’s amazing,” Coccomo said at the July 15 ceremony. “It’s a great indication of what a special person Christopher was. I’m very impressed.” Nearly 200 people gathered at the new subdivision off Southington Road in memory of the teen.

Solid stretch for Berlin prep baseball team On June 27, the Berlin Prep Division baseball team pounced on Wethersfield, winning 10-3. Matt Kozak started for Berlin and limited the opponent to three runs. The bats came alive for Berlin, with every player contributing a hit. Pat-
rick Lukens led the way with two hits, including a double.

the Tri-County team and emerged victorious, 8-3. Kozak pitched a complete game. Tim Stapell, Gileau, Caracoglia, Lukens and Folta powered the victors and Nate Orde worked hard stealing bases and drawing throws to advance multiple runners.
Challenger baseball team makes it to the big time By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
For one full day, Berlin Challenger baseball team athletes got to experience Fenway Park as more than just fans. “It was an unbelievable honor,” Challenger team coach Jessica Garrity said. “They treated us like royalty.” On Wednesday, July 6, 11 members of the Berlin team
spent the day at the iconic stadium, practicing with the Boston Red Sox batting coaches, eating lunch in the dugout, and, later, watching a game from special stadium seats. The Challenger team, comprised of Berlin residents of all ages with disabilities, was one of eight New England teams to be chosen to spend the day at Fenway. Garrity applied to be part of the baseball camp experience and was excited when
her team was selected. The event was sponsored by CVS Health as part of the All Kids Can Clinic and the Red Sox. Each player was able to bring along a few family members to share the experience with. Simona Dhanraj was one of the local parents who attended. Her 6-year-old daughter joined the Berlin team this past year. “It brought the kids together,” See Challenger, A19

Committee seeks more competitive balance for hoops By Ken Lipshez Record-Journal staff
A CIAC boys basketball sub-committee has made a proposal for what it hopes will create a more equitable future by the changing the divisional parameters for the four tournaments. The proposal would scrap divisional structure based heavily on a school’s male population for one that weighs tournament success as a more decisive factor in an attempt to account for a system that most feel is tilted toward schools without borders, like parochial schools and magnet schools. The proposal has passed the committee stage, and reportedly has been approved by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association, but has more barriers to clear before it can be enacted on a one-year trial basis in 2016-17.
2015 decision to balance the four divisions.
A similar plan was put into effect by the committee in 2004 that lasted three seasons. The system was based on a strength-of-schedule based power-point system that weighed heavily on wins over quality opponents, but it couldn’t be computed until after the final regular-season game was over. Some coaches admitted off the record that they tanked games after qualifying for the postseason in order to slide down a division. “The big difference is See Hoops, A18

LIONS’ FISHING TOURNAMENTS
For the eighth year, the Berlin Lions Club held its annual fishing tournaments for visually impaired children and adults. This year, the junior tournament was held at Sage Park and the senior tournament was an off-shore excursion on a charter boat out of Niantic. Contestants from all over Connecticut enjoyed fishing and camaraderie, accompanied by their companions and Lions volunteers.

For the second time in 12 years, proponents seek to scrap the Class format (LL, L, M and S) for divisions labeled 1, 2, 3 and 4. The committee would augment the population demographics with an expanded analysis on school’s tournament success over the past 14 seasons.

“What I’m hoping is to put schools where we think they belong and make it an equitable tournament that gives everyone a shot,” said Cecchini, the athletic director at Suffield High from 1969 to 1984, the Connecticut AD of the Year in 1979 and a member of the National High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
“We’ve still got two more meetings to go,” said Bob Cecchini, the CIAC’s longtime tournament director. “It has to go the athletic directors and the CIAC Board of Control, so it still has a long way to go. I hope it’s this year, but who knows?” The athletic directors are slated to meet sometime in August. The Board of Control is also scheduled to convene just before the new school year begins.

schools will know exactly where they are prior to the tournament,” Cecchini said. “That’s what we wanted to do more than anything else. Now they can’t go up or down a division and they’ll know who they should scout.”

Sheehan boys coach Joe Gaetano has long been a proponent of a formula that would elicit parity between public schools and the schools without borders. The Titans won a Class M title in 2009-10. They lost to Torrington in the 2005-06 Class L semifinals and three times in the quarters over the last 14 seasons.

“I don’t know if there’s an answer. I just know it hasn’t been equitable.” Many coaches call for the schools without borders to have their own tournament, similar to New York, but Cecchini doesn’t see that ever happening.

“I don’t know what else CIAC can do but in all fairness, if you can draw from more than one district, that’s an advantage,” he said. “I just want the playing field to be level. If you have the right people on the committee, it could be a good thing.

“I don’t think so. There are not enough of those schools. There are 14 parochial schools and 18 magnet schools that run the [population] gamut from 75 on up,” Cecchini said. “I don’t think the Board of Control would go for that. New York State has gigantic populations to deal with.”
