Residents may have to wait a little longer to visit a vineyard in town.

Currently, it is unknown if those plans have progressed.

According to town officials, a site plan has not been submitted for a winery. Regulations to allow a winery operation in various sections of town went into effect late March. The process kicked off after resident Bradford Kelley approached Economic Development with the idea. He planned for a vineyard on

Once again, Berlin out-paces the competition For the third time, the Town of Berlin has won the Central Connecticut Health District’s Walking Competition, beating out Newington, Wethersfield and Rocky Hill in the month-long event. The winning town was announced Thursday, July

7, at the summer concert series held at the Amphitheater in Rocky Hill’s Elm Ridge Park. This was the first year that town residents joined in the competition. In previous years, only town employees participated.

The goal of the competition is for each person to get up to 10,000 steps a day, close to five miles. Other activities that can’t be tracked with a pedometer, like swimming or rowing, can be recorded for a cap of 30 minutes a day per activity.

Participants log their pedometer miles on WalkingWorks.com from Blue Cross

who confirmed its bones remained solid after 240 years. That was the endorsement he needed to make an offer. Having family and friends here to help with the work made the home’s transformation possible. They went to work getting the roof re-shingled. Next, they hand dug the dirt basement floor, and removed the mold with gallons of bleach. A concrete floor was poured and the HVAC systems updated. Floors were refinished, old windows restored, walls and paneling painted. Vintage features were preserved, in-

cluding the old, but efficient, cast iron radiators. While over the years the building has seen alterations, the wavy, hand blown glass, 6 over 6 panes, wood windows remain, as does much of the original clapboard, some secured with hand wrought nails. The overhanging second story is a unique feature as are the brownstone steps. Cut in a style know as a “curtain entry with volute,” the lower stone step has a carved swirl on either side. Divided side lights frame the front entry door, no longer hidden by overgrown shrubs. 944 Worthington Ridge back in the day. Recently, Rice replaced wood clapboards on the upper front story, as the old ones were too fragile to scrape and sand for painting. Another unique feature is that the width of the wood clapboards differs on each side of the building.

Loveland Tavern even had an upstairs ballroom. When Elijah Loveland died in 1826, his son, George, took over the business. Census records from 1850 show a mix of families living in the building, including Loveland’s grown son and daughter, a North family of four, and two women, Lucy Pease and Sarah Stone. The ladies ran a women’s apparel shop there called “Pease and Stone.” Later, the 1880 census records the Roys family as the occupants of the building. Franklin Roys, an inventor, held patents for improved metal roofing and corrugated metal. He became a partner in Peck, Stow, Wilcox, manufacturer of tinsmith tools and metal roofing in East Berlin, the epicenter of the tin industry at that time. Sarah Roys, one of the three daughters, ran a private school in the house, eponymously known as Miss Roys’ School, from the 1880s until the early 20th century.

Rice lives in California and works for a fine arts museum in San Francisco. He has no immediate plans to move back to Berlin, so the house he restored is currently being rented. He does admit to having an eye open for other restoration opportunities in his hometown. It’s unfortunate Warren and Elsie Kingsbury did not live to see their former home restored, but one of their daughters recently visited from Florida and gave Rice a grateful “thumbs up.” – The writer is Vice-Chair of Berlin’s Historic District Commission.

Bringing back this old house has been a passionate journey for Rice and his family. They continue to study historic homes, ever tweaking their work. Replacing the newer storm door, repairing a vintage door bell, and adding a period-appropriate fence on the corner are on their to-do list.

A gaggle of geese hold up traffic along Farmington Avenue recently.

Letters to the Editor Supporting Gerratana To the editor: On Aug. 9, we have an important primary for the Democratic State Senate seat in New Britain, Berlin and Farmington. I would like to encourage voters to support Terry Gerratana. During the time that I served on the Berlin Board of Education, from 2004-2013, as well as in my professional career of working with individuals with intellectual disabilities at a local community non-profit provider, I became well acquainted with Sen. Gerratana. From my personal experiences, she is a champion for education and for people with intellectual disabilities. What makes Sen. Gerratana stand out is that she listens carefully, cares about the issues, uses common sense and seeks information and knowledge. She has a passion to serve her communities. Sen. Gerratana has the character we all seek in a candidate: someone who puts the well-being of her community above any personal agenda. She has a commitment to hold herself accountable to the voters by being accessible and keeping her actions transparent. I appreciate the fact that Sen. Gerratana is hard-working and a proven leader. She is currently chair of the Public Health Committee and vice-chair of the Government Administration and Elections Committee. She is a member of the Appropriations Committee and the Judiciary Committee. Her tenure goes back to 1993 when Sen. Gerratana first served in the Connecticut General Assembly as a member of the state House of Representatives for 10 years. Then, in 2011, she was elected in a special election to represent the citizens of the 6th District as State Senator. In 2014, Sen. Gerratana was elected again by her constituents. She has been endorsed by the Democrats for the 6th District State Senate seat. Terry has served

the 6th District voters well over the years and has earned my support. Julie Erickson Berlin

Lousy plan To the editor: Wow! Berlin got a state grant to improve Main Street, Kensington and they sure did, taking parking spaces away making a middle isle with trees to narrow the street more. I had a 9 a.m. appointment with Dr. Bannon recently, and there were no parking spaces available. How is that going to improve business for those already there? Maybe move? Sure is a lousy plan. Now I can’t wait for the first snow and watch the plows go up and down Main Street. Bet some bricks will go flying. Oh well, maybe the state will give us another grant to clean up. Mary Jane Mason Berlin

If it’s not broken ... To the editor:

We have a first-rate education system. Our trash is collected regularly in modern hygienic containers. The tax rate is stable. The town’s infrastructure is properly maintained. The public safety is assured by dedicated police officers. We have one of the finest fire departments in Connecticut. We enjoy excellent libraries and parks. New businesses have located here. The town’s credit rating is superior. The town’s boards and commissions function properly allowing the town to provide the necessary services that progressive communities offer. The high school is ready to serve future generations. The council and the manager have been a good team in providing direction and management of the town’s multi million-dollar operations. The town’s professional staff has been instrumental in getting the town’s business done right. The financial matters have been expertly managed and overseen by the town manager, finance director, with the council’s oversight. Now a further attempt is being made to revert to the old form of government. A partisan finance board is again proposed which would strip away the council’s financial duties. The Board of Education will become partisan. The members of these boards will be hand picked by the party bosses. A really bad idea! It appears that our finance director agrees. He has taken a job with another community. There is nothing fundamentally flawed with our present 21st century system of government. The proposed changes do nothing to improve how government works.

Nineteen years ago an attempt was made to change our charter by eliminating our council/ manager government and reestablish an executive board and a finance board. Fortunately, the voters Reverting to a 1900’s style of government would be a serious misstep. The voters will speak in soundly defeated that effort. November. Berlin has flourished under its professionally opStephen J. Anderson erated system of government. Berlin It is a great place live and work and raise a family.

Down for the count By Ken Lipshez Record-Journal staff

The National Federation of State High School Associations mandated Tuesday, July 12 that the CIAC and all state bodies that govern scholastic baseball must implement pitch counts by next season in an attempt to reduce the number of injuries that require surgery.

thrown on a given day to mandatory rest time. For example, 60 pitches thrown might dictate two days of rest, or 100 pitches could require four or five. “We’ll try and apply logic to do what’s best for Connecticut,” Balsamo said.

Some states have established the pitch limit at 125. Balsamo said Connecticut’s committee chose to rely on coaches’ common sense rather than establish a hard The CIAC Baseball Comand fast barrier. Who would mittee was well-prepared for the missive, according to officially count pitches at baseball tournament director each game, he said, requires further discussion. Fred Balsamo. “It gives the states autonomy to work it out. It’s very broadbased,” Balsamo said. “We expected something like this coming down. We’ve been looking at it for two years. We’ll have to finalize something in the fall.” Balsamo said the committee is expected to adhere to the NFHS directive by associating the number of pitches

“That’s the logistical thing we need to work through,” Balsamo said. “Who’s going to do the counting? How are we going to verify accuracy? There are people doing it unofficially now. Certainly we’re not going to have the umpires do it. We’re working through the administrative part. The implementation may be cumbersome, but I think the byproduct

Gary Costello, left, and Ben DeLaubell, of Cheshire, along with all high school pitchers in the nation, will be under pitch limits starting next season thanks to a mandate handed down by the National Federation of State High School Associations. The NFSHSA is requiring all states to draw up their own guidelines to meet the mandate. | Justin Weekes / For the Record-Journal

should be that pitching will improve.”

The CIAC previously used innings as a guideline. The rule in the 2016 tournament packet said that “the pitcher my not pitch more than 10 innings in any three consecutive calendar days,” which was much easier for coaches to monitor.

21 VINEYARD DRIVE, KENSINGTON • $279,000 Lovely well maintained and cared for colonial situated on half acre lot. Two car attached garage connects to cozy breezeway and connects to rear deck overlooking patio and stone fire pit for those pleasant summer nights. Interior boasts beautiful hardwood throughout entire home. Eat in kitchen, separate dining room, front to back living room with pellet stove, 3 bedrooms and 1 ½ baths. The lower level features a nicely done, fully finished walk out basement. Additional updates feature a 2008 architectural roof, 2013 new driveway.

Sheehan coach Matt Altieri said the official counting of pitches is likely to pose some clerical issues in dugouts across the state, but limiting pitches should not affect the Titans’ pitching efficiency.

133 HILLSIDE ROAD, KENSINGTON • $249,900 Location location! 1.38 acres of beauty and tranquility. Price reflects updates needed to this 2000+ square foot Cape (more of a ranch style as upstairs is a large studio/office, majority of square footage on main level). Great entertaining 16x33 foot family room with fireplace, room overlooking 21x12 foot sun room. Also offering 3 bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, eat in kitchen. The property alone will draw you in with your imagination waiting to recreate the interior of this home with your own ideas.

319 NEW BRITAIN ROAD, UNIT 224, KENSINGTON • $99,900

The Titans’ demanding SCC schedule and the need for pitching on the sub-varsity level have shaped his theories on developing pitchers. “I’m wondering if there will be a pitch registry?” Altieri said. “Who’s going to keep it? What happens if there’s a controversy? Are you going to keep track of the other team’s pitches, too? “It won’t have any effect on See Pitch, A17
