“We are making a clear path to get into school,” he said. The doors students will use to enter the school in the morning will change to the Gibney Gymnasium. Only tardy students, students who need accessibility, and visitors will be allowed in the main entrance at the start of the day. Officers continued spot checks in the area to observe the traffic. “We worry about pedestrians crossing the street in that area,” Deputy Chief John Klett said last spring. A team of officers came up with a plan to make sure parents no longer drop off students in the street. Now, students will be dropped off near the gym and use the crosswalk to get to the entrance safely. Speed bumps and stop signs have been implemented in the parking lot. “This allows pedestrian students to make it across safely,” said Lt. James Gosselin.

In March, the Berlin PD witnessed vehicles driving the wrong way on Patterson Way to pass other drivers while dropping off students. Several parents stopped at the top of the hill to let students out in the middle of the road.

“We’ve had near misses and minor accidents in the past,” Gosselin said.

Kennedy said the new entrance will allow parents to drop off students close to the school without clogging up the driveway the buses use. “We shared equal concerns with the police department,” he said.

About half a dozen officers will be on hand during the first few weeks of school to get students and parents acclimated to the changes.

Both Swanson and Gosselin said that texting can be harder to catch compared to people talking on their phone, both because of the visibility of the phone, and because and people may be more aware of law enforcement. Local craft store to display fairy village Her teacher, Marla Veilleux, also expressed excitement for the event. “It’s just a nice thing to bring people together, considering there are so many serious things going on in the world,” she said. “Hopefully it inspires some people.”

Some new residents will be taking up real estate in Volunteer Park as part of Scraptivity’s month-long event.

The business will hold workshops throughout September so that residents can learn to make their own fairy houses complete with fairies, fairy swings, and whimsical doors.

“It’s a really fun way for the community to come together,” said Trish Gibson, owner of the craft store. The Farmington Avenue store will display a variety of handmade fairy houses all around nearby Volunteer Park starting the first weekend in September. The houses can be made out of any materials, can be any size, but must incorporate an element of nature. The creations will make up ‘Fiddlehead Fern Fairy Village,’ which people can visit any time. Gibson has been to similar fairy villages in other towns where the houses were made by artists. The upcoming display in Berlin is open to all. Since opening a year ago, Scraptivity has held art classes and workshops all with the intention of reusing and recycling supplies. The store runs

Some houses are already scattered throughout the store, ready to be placed in the park. A two-story house made to look like a tree has been worked on by Gibson and Scraptivity teachers. Numbered Popsicle sticks will mark assigned spots in the park for houses and accessories.

EDITORIAL

GUEST COMMENTARY

Countering a trend in sports In sports, specialization is an increasing trend. That’s been the case for a long time now at the professional level. While at one time there were professional football players who played both offense and defense, those days are long gone. Today, there are players specialized for individual situations, individual plays. In baseball, pitching a complete game was once quite common. Today, it’s extremely rare; pitchers tend to specialize for sections of a game, as in mid-relievers and closers. And in baseball’s American League, there is the designated hitter, a specialization if there ever was one. The trend is also evident in youth sports, with young athletes specializing at increasingly younger ages in one sport and excluding others. There is some indication that this might not be healthy, both physically because of repetitive strain, and psychologically because of stress that contributes to burnout and dropping out of sports. There is the assumption that specializing is required in order to reach an elite level of play, but the vast majority of young people are never going to reach that level, and the risk of injury and psychological stress is the greater concern. Bob McKee, the new athletic director

at Meriden’s Maloney High School, is no stranger to success at a young age. He was on the Southington High School 1994 state championship baseball team. That’s an experienced position from which to deliver an important message, which is that young athletes are better served by exploring a variety of options. He would like to see more three-sport athletes at Maloney. There is a lot of room for improvement. Just 2 percent of male athletes at the high school played three sports, and just 3 percent of female athletes, last year. About three-quarters of the school’s athletes played just one sport. McKee is trying to emphasize that the benefits of participating outweigh winning. While not an easy message to deliver, it’s an important one. “Everyone likes to win, but the big picture is that lots of life’s lessons come from being a part of something, like dealing with adversity and how to be competitive,” he told the Record-Journal recently. We agree. By urging student athletes to broaden their experience and learning, McKee is pursuing a fundamental goal of education. This editorial was originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal.

Journeying through historic Nantucket By Barbara Helming

On a recent trip to Nantucket, I enjoyed the 12th annual historic house and kitchen tour on July 21. Sponsored by the Nantucket Preservation Trust, the tour is one of that non-profit organization’s programs supporting its goal of preserving Nantucket’s architectural heritage for present and future generations to enjoy. The tour originated as a simple kitchen tour. In recent years, however, it evolved into a house tour to educate people about the significance

Letters to the Editor Elevator needs funds To the editor: I urge all library patrons to attend the Sept. 6 Town Council meeting. With a cost of $250,000, we are only $10,000 away from a desperately needed elevator, thanks to the diligence of the library director in securing a grant and the generosity of caring people. Anyone with difficulty walking knows how impossible it is to get from the top level to the bottom level of that building. How can we as a town, in good conscience, allow this $125,000 grant to slip through our hands and be given back to the state so towns other than Ber-

lin can benefit. Surely our Town Council can find $10,000 to make our library compliant and accessible to all.

of Nantucket’s historic homes along with the possibilities that exist in both designing new and retaining historic kitchens in old homes.

This year’s tour included eight homes along a section of Centre Street. In centuries past, Centre Street had been an important road connecting the old settlement at Sherburne and the Great Harbor. While the Great Fire of 1846 destroyed homes along the southern portion of Centre Street, See Helming, A13

the homes on the tour survived as prime examples of 18th and 19th century architecture. One stop on the tour was the First Congregational Church. Constructed in 1834, it sits atop what is now called Academy Hill and serves as a local landmark due to its visibility from a great distance. After touring the church, visitors were allowed access to the church’s bell tower. Ninety-four steps up the tower offer a bird’s-eye view of both the town and the

harbor. Although the tower is currently being renovated, the slightly obstructed views were worth the climb. On a clear day, Martha’s Vineyard is visible from the bell tower. The home at 68 Centre St. was built in the early 19th century in a style identified with Quaker simplicity. Features include three fireplaces per floor and a four-bay-wide facade with a ridge chimney. The elegant home at 64 Centre St. currently serves as the First Congregational Church’s parish house. Built around 1789, it was de-

scribed in a 1791 deed as being a “mansion house.” The pastor’s wife was home during the tour and allowed visitors to skip the requisite surgical booties donned to reduce the dirt tracked into the houses. The pastor’s wife said visitors on the tour could not possibly track in more dirt than her children and dogs do. The home at 51 Centre St. is known as the Peter Folger house. Five generations of the Folger family lived in this home since it was built in 1790. The home is unusual

in that it is set back from the street much further than the neighboring houses. It also is a story taller than most Nantucket dwellings of that time. Venturing off Centre Street, the tour continued at 7 Academy Lane. On approaching the house, only the garage is visible, leaving visitors surprised by the enormity of the house once they enter. Built in 1806 at the top of Academy Hill, this home has evolved over time. In the 1820s it was embellished with Federal details. Currently the home includes an arched entryway and each end of the facade is

decorated with quoins constructed to resemble stone blocks. One memorable item in this kitchen was a massive ornate picture frame containing a cork board with numerous family photos displayed on it with pins. Tour participants were treated to free food samples at the Nantucket Culinary Center as well as a discounted lunch at the Corner Table Cafe. Both The culinary center and the cafe are located in a circa 1872 home at 22 Federal St. This home was See Helming, A15

>> Letters Charter change support To the editor: Not sure where the disconnect exists. After reading Councilor Campanelli’s assessment of the special Town Council meeting held on Aug 11, you would have thought that total calamity and mayhem had laid siege to our Berlin Town Hall. In fact there were a handful of citizens in attendance. There were no boos, hissing, yelling, sighing, gestures, name calling or gnashing of teeth to be heard. In fact, those present sat quietly and respectfully.

the pros and cons and make the best decision to bring our town into a fiscally responsible, citizen responsive, form of government.

The charter revisions being proposed deserve everyone’s undivided attention. The proposed changes and adjustments were mutually arrived at by a well-represented committee. Let’s take the time, over the next few months to consider each of the changes proposed. Weigh

I urge everyone to support all the proposed changes to the town charter. Vote yes in November. Let’s join together and put our government back to work for us. Joan Veley Berlin

“The bill that passed requires screening be done for ALD. Republican and Democratic legislators were behind the bill when it came out and we saved lives by getting it passed,” Fasano said. “The governor and lieutenant governor supported it from Day 1. And I want to say how hard these families fought to get ALD legislation passed.” The Kellys not only inspired the legislation, they have devoted themselves to advancing the cause of ALD screening.

“We don’t want another child to face the challenge Brian has faced for 21 years,” Jean Kelly said. “Screening is important because ALD is a sneaky disease and the key to the health of the child is in early detection. Screening gives children a chance at life.” ALD can cause a degeneration of the nervous system beginning at age 2, but commonly occurs in boys between 4 and 10 years old. Symptoms range from vision problems and hearing loss to difficulty reading, writing and understanding speech. The father of a boy who tested positive for ALD after the legislation took effect spoke about his family’s ordeal. Jeremy (who declined to provide his last name) said, “ALD screening impacted my life and changed it forever. My second child (Brody) tested positive and I thank Connecticut for its screening program. Other states should step on board.” Connecticut is only the second state that screens for ALD. It is part of the state’s newborn screening program that tests every newborn child for certain harmful or potentially fatal disorders

Ted Kennedy, Jr. (D-Branford) also was at the Branford Fire Department. “Early identification of ALD means early treatment and fewer consequences for children with the condition and their families,” Kennedy said. “Today is a very good day for the State of Connecticut. This new screening program is going to change lives by ensuring that children with ALD are given the treatment they need so that they do not suffer from the most serious consequences of this disease. I am proud to have the chance to stand beside the Kelley Family as we launch this program. Without their tireless advocacy we would not be here today.”

Eversource warns of ‘discounted power’ pitches filiated with Eversource and are most likely either scammers or third-party suppliers choosing to use deceptive marketing tactics. “If you’re receiving phone calls from someone saying they’re a ‘representative’ of Eversource and offering to sell you discounted power, this is not us. We are a reg-

ulated delivery company and don’t market electricity supply to our customers,” said Penni Conner, Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at Eversource. “Though electricity customers in Connecticut do have the option of choosing a competitive energy supplier, and most competitive suppliers do follow the rules, we urge customers to do their due diligence and check the validity of any company or offer being made.” Eversource rarely makes unsolicited phone calls and would never solicit door-todoor on behalf of a competitive supplier. All Eversource employees carry company-issued identification, and any electrical contractors working with the company carry documentation explaining the nature and loca-

tion of their work. Customers can always call Eversource to verify this information. Customers considering a switch to a third-party supplier are urged to evaluate factors such as the length and terms of a contract with a supplier, cancellation fees or other related information before providing any financial or account information. The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority licenses competitive suppliers in the state and maintains a list of current offers available from suppliers. Reminders: - Never provide a copy of your utility bill or account information to any unsolicited person on the phone, at the door, or online, particularly if you question their

legitimacy. - Customers can verify they are speaking with an Eversource representative by asking for some basic information about their account like the name on the account, the account address, and the exact balance due. - If you don’t feel comfortable, close the door or hang up the phone. Eversource urges anyone who believes they are the target of improper solicitation to call 1-800-286-2000. The company tracks these types of customer concerns and reports them to state regulators. Eversource.com provides more information on how to protect personal information and avoid becoming a victim of utility scams. — Press Release
