Late Berlin High student honored
9/11 heroes remembered
By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Nick Zuk was known as a fighter on and off the football field. He died in June after a battle with leukemia and his “Redcoats” family is making sure No. 53 lives on. “We’re a tight-knit community, we come together when needed,” said Mitch Maslowski, a senior captain of the football team. Zuk would have also been a senior at Berlin High School this year. A plaque in his honor will be dedicated at a home game on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Scalise Field, Sage Park.

Red, white and blue-clad sixth graders applauded for local first responders at McGee Middle School on Friday morning, Sept. 9. “These are brave souls that must leave their families and friends to safely race and respond to a scene whether it’s a fire, or car accident,” said McGee Principal Salvatore Urso.
“He dedicated so much time to football,” said Jack Hamel, another senior captain.
The first responders attended the school’s annual tribute to the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001. Students were shown a video in the auditorium, followed by a “peace walk” down to the high school track.
The plaque will be displayed on a bronze football helmet. The players will touch the helmet as they

The first ballot question asks voters if they want a Board of Finance and up to two budget referendums. Some councilors were concerned about having two charter changes in one question. “Somebody may want half and not the other half,” said Councilor Kristin Campanelli, a Democrat. The other questions will focus on the revisions of an automatic referendum, a partisan Board of Education, a separately elected mayor, and general provisions to the charter.
1. Shall the proposal to establish a Board of Finance and authorize up to two budget referenda be adopted? 2. Shall the proposal to authorize an automatic referendum for bonding ordinances over $5 million be adopted? 3. Shall the proposal to establish a partisan Board of Education be adopted? 4. Shall the proposal to directly elect the Mayor as part of a seven member Town Council be adopted? 5. Shall the proposed general revisions to the Town Charter be adopted?

The award has been given out to local families in the New Britain/Berlin area since 2013, recognizing those making a difference in the community. Russell J. Van Dorn HONOLULU, Hawaii — Russell J. Van Dorn passes away after a long illness. He was the son of the late Horace B. Van Dorn and Eleanor J. Va n D o r n formerly of Kensington. If you have traveled through Farmington on Route 4 over the past year you may have noticed the construction of a quintessential New England building. Later this month this beautiful building will be completed and citizens of Berlin, and others, will have the rare opportunity to tour the Hartford Connecticut Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 2 Central Way (1125 Farmington Ave.). Before it is dedicated in November, the temple will be open to the public, including children of all ages. Everybony is invited to attend an open house tour Friday, Sept. 30 through
Saturday, Oct. 22. Admission is free. Reservations (templeopenhouse.lds. org or call 855-537-2000) and modest attire are requested. Many friends in the building and engineering industry have expressed interest in this new temple due to its unique and quality construction. Some are curious, and still others are interested in the value it could potentially bring to our community. The tours are not for proselyting, although you are welcome to ask for further information there or through Mormon. org. This temple is comparable to biblical times, where Moses had his tabernacle, albeit a traveling one,
and Solomon built a temple which was one of his greatest accomplishments. During His life, Jesus Christ spent a lot of time in the temple; helping, healing, and teaching, which is still what happens in temples today. Inside the different rooms people make covenants with God; promises to keep His commandments, to be good husbands and wives, and to share what we have to take care of each other. Marriages are also performed there to last forever so families, including our ancestors, can always be together. Unlike other meeting houses of the Church, which serve a local area, this building serves a
larger region that encompasses Connecticut, Rhode Island, and portions of New York and Massachusetts. The two closest temples, prior to this one being built, were in Boston and Manhattan. The temple will be used Tuesday through Saturday. Regular meetinghouses are used on Sunday’s for worship and throughout the week for scouting, youth, and other activities. When you tour the temple I hope you can appreciate its beauty, both inside and outside. But it is my deeper hope that you will feel the peace that is available inside this special building and the blessing it will bring to the people in our communities.

Judge: Redesign state education In a 90-page decision that may well turn Connecticut’s traditional ways of funding and running its schools upside-down, Hartford Superior Court Judge Thomas Moukawsher declared on Wednesday, Sept. 7 that the state must clear up the “befuddled and misdirected” education policies that have shortchanged low-income students by “graduating them without the skills needed for higher education.” The present system, Moukawsher said, which “allows rich towns to raid money desperately needed by poor towns, makes a mockery of the state’s constitutional duty to provide adequate educational opportunities to all students.” Furthermore, the judge ordered the General Assembly to reinvent the way teachers are evaluated, change the “irrational” way special education is funded, and define “elementary” and “secondary” education — and to come up with a plan to accomplish all of this within 180 days. The state can appeal, of course, but as impossible as that timeline seems (the lawmakers for the next session won’t even be elected until November, and won’t convene until early February), this decision could be just the push Connecticut needs to do more about unequal school funding. There’s no question that the performance gap in this state — between affluent and poor students, between suburban and urban students, between white and minority students — is among the worst in the country. Yes, the state has long been making up for part of the budget shortfall in the poorer municipalities, mainly through Education
Cost Sharing grants. But the judge seemed particularly concerned that when money is tight, as it is this budget year, those grants can be cut. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy correctly points out that “the state has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in education” since he took office, “with an overwhelming share directed at supporting our students who need it the most.” The Meriden school system, for example, gets about 55 percent of its non-construction funding from the state (school construction brings an even higher compensation rate), while prosperous Greenwich gets only 3 percent of its budget from Hartford — and still manages to spend almost $6,000 more per pupil than Meriden, and nearly $4,000 more than the state average. (These are 2013-14 figures.) After 60 days of testimony, however — in a case filed 11 years ago by the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding, against then-Gov. M. Jodi Rell — Moukawsher remained unconvinced that this system works, or complies with the requirements of the state Constitution. Both teachers unions are already objecting to the judge’s remarks about the present teacher evaluation system. And what will it take to get a majority of lawmakers on the same page, if it means that those who represent the more affluent towns will have to vote to cut their own funding in order to send more to the inner-city schools? This court mandate promises to be one of the biggest issue at the Capitol next year. Is Connecticut still revolutionary? We’ll find out. – Originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal.

I was dismayed by the objections from the NAACP (I would welcome knowing exactly what objections were stated) and by the criticism from a town councilor who said that we should not be discussing Focus on fixing our roads, such a topic, but should making sure our students are prepared for college and instead be speaking words of “unity” and “peace.” Supcareer and make sure our pressing uncomfortable trash is picked up rather information will never lead than changing our town to resolution of a conflict, charter to fit your agenda. and neither will refusing Michael Baczewski to acknowledge or address Berlin that information.

Berlin Historical Society revisits area history By Lorraine Stub
If you were late to discover the Historical Society’s Story Share events and missed the Downtown Kensington’s Main Street and Farmington Avenue programs, another opportunity to participate is coming up on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1 to 3 p.m., at the Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive. We’ve had many requests to repeat the programs on downtown.
with something to say. While we cannot guarantee you will have the same experience the first group had, there are other stories we are likely to hear from a new group of eager participants. Don’t miss an opportunity to participate again. Our audiences never seem to tire of sharing what they remember. Even if you are newer to town, immersing yourself in our history is one of the best ways to join in the community.

Warmth can be created through color choices, lighting, and candles. “I love the lanterns with the candles in them,” said Martha Gargano, an owner of Motif, a design boutique for the kitchen, bath, and home on Meriden-Waterbury Road in Plantsville. “It’s such a hot trend.” The use of gold, or mixing silver and gold metals, is also trending and another way to add some warmth to the home, said Linda Sciascia, another owner of Motif.

color pops for fall include blues, a resurgence in navy and darker blues. Mirroring the fashion runways, the color that really pops is from the yellow family, such as spicy mustard. For design trends, we’re seeing larger, narrower tables, much like communal tables, upscale farmhouse. The large, but narrow tables project closeness. Just in time for fall, it’s cozy.

Berlin Fair, where & when
From A1
Fair President Lenny Tubbs was among many Lions Club members working at the fairgrounds Wednesday night, Sept. 7. He says the preparation has always been a community effort. “We do it with not just members, it’s the volunteers that come down,” he said. Hundreds of mums are brought in and planted a few weeks before the fair. The crew makes sure the look of the fair is just as important as how it all runs.
The Berlin Fair is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Berlin Fairgrounds, 430 Beckley Road. A fee is charged.
The Berlin Agricultural Lions Museum is also gearing up for the fair weekend. The barn, which holds over 40 antique tractors, will be filled with various displays.
“We have our Guida’s display down back, the Rock-A-Land Dairy display, a lot of stuff and memorabilia from Berlin,” he said. “A lot of it all came from Berlin.” The cart track, though quiet last Wednesday night, will be revving up during the fair weekend. Past Fair President Gary Bienkowski says the racing is a popular attraction. “People come down here, the carts are running and next thing you know this whole fence line and bleachers are packed,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
The Berlin Fair, and all the fun it brings, will take place Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. | Photo by Lee Roski
The 68th annual Berlin Lions Club event features a rodeo, live music, pig and dachshund races, juggling shoes, Wild World of Animals show, livestock, tractor and truck pulls, arts and crafts, contests, vendors, midway games and rides, food and more.
Steve Dubowsky also knows all about crowded fair entertainment. He is the superintendent of tractor and truck pulls scheduled throughout the weekend. “We have doodle bug pulls we have tractor pulls and we have modified truck pulls,” he said. Like many of his fellow crew members, Dubowsky has been a longtime volunteer with the fair.
The members and volunteers will continue to work at the fairgrounds nearly every night before the fair. Soon venCROSSWORD dors and carnival crews will be setting up their booths and entertainment on the grounds.
