Fairy village features 20 whimsical houses By Barbara Helming Special to The Citizen

The Veterans Commission will hold an outdoor concert at the end of the month to celebrate the completion of phase two of work at Veterans Memorial Park. “We want to make it known to people,” said Peter Galgano, the town’s veteran contact person and a member of the commission. “We really have to get the word out.” The park’s newest feature called “America’s Wars Walkway” was completed last year as part of phase two of the park project along with a bridge connecting memorials. The gloomy skies over Fiddlehead Fern Fairy Village Sunday morning, Sept. 18 did not dampen the enthusiasm of those present. Volunteer Park, located at 1041 Farmington Ave., has been transformed into a fairy village for the month of September. More than 20 fairy houses, nestled into the plants and landscape of the tiny park, were created by both children and adults from Berlin. This is the first fairy village in town and the event is hosted by Scraptivity, a creative arts re-use store in Berlin. The unifying theme of all the fairy houses is that they each include a touch of nature. Under the gazebo, Scraptivity teacher Peggy Loehr, was helping the Blair sisters make clay fairies from Model Magic. Aimee Blair offered face painting while her 10-year-old daughter, Chloe, adorned her arms with artistic designs. Meanwhile, 5-year-old Brooklyn Duquette and her mother ar-

Amber Figueroa and her mom also stopped by to admire the fairy houses. The fairy village will remain in the park for public viewing, through the end of September. Sunday morning, Sept. 25, Peggy will be back in the gazebo to help children make fairy cards.

Redcoats march to victory over Rockville By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen

Days are getting shorter. Nights are getting cooler. School is back in session. And so is Redcoats football. Following a turbulent 2015 campaign and a discouraging loss in the season opener, new head coach Joe Aresimowicz marched his Berlin Redcoats on to Scalise Field for their home opener against the Rockville Rams on a cool Friday evening, Sept. 16 and the locals rolled, 50-14.

This game, however, was special for another reason. The Redcoats were not only playing against Rockville, they were doing their part to fight cancer. Dedicated to the memory of Nick Zuk, the team wanted to turn in a performance that would honor the memory of a teammate and friend lost to cancer. And they did not disappoint. “I think [the team’s performance] was amazing, both as young men and football players,” said Aresimowicz, commending his troops for

rising to the challenge of performing on a night “when we were remembering a dear, close friend.” From the start, the Redcoats played with great passion and scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Not showing any signs of slowing down, Berlin went on to score three more touchdowns and a two-point

conversion by the end of the second frame, and the score stood at 36-7 at the half. BHS freshman Larry St. Pierre featured prominently in the first half, manufacturing two rushing touchdowns. The Redcoats charged onto the field with unshaken determination in the second half. Late in the third quarter, St.

Pierre rushed the Rockville defense for his third touchdown of the game and fellow freshman Zach Hrubiec ran in his second two-point conversion, putting the Redcoats up 44-7. In the closing period, Berlin captain and senior Mitch Maslowski was on the receiving end of another See Game, A16

Program sheds light on Social Security More than two dozen people gathered at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library Wednesday, Sept. 7 for a presentation on the recent changes to Social Security benefits. David Weyner, Senior Associate, at U.S.A. Financial

and Tax Services in Hartford, presented the educational workshop. Social Security is a federal income-security program established in 1935 as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal. It was intended to be a foundation of economic security for millions of American retirees,

disabled citizens and survivors. Social Security currently has three programs. The retirement benefit comprises 72 percent of the program, survivor benefits 10 percent and disability benefits 15 percent. Social Security currently makes up 39 percent of the income of retirees. One of the questions currently being debated is whether or not Social Security benefits for people currently in the workforce will be available when they reach retirement age. Weyner stated that Social Security will not totally run out of money even if the key trust fund is exhausted as is predicted to occur in 2034. Tax income alone would be sufficient to pay about 72 percent of the scheduled benefits through 2087. Even with current trends, Social Security will be able to provide reduced benefits if no changes are made to the program. Weyner indicated, however, that it is not politically likely that the Social Security program will remain unchanged in the coming years. Social Security provides incentives to delay filing for retirement benefits. Between age 66, which is currently full retirement age (FRA), and age 70, monthly benefits increase for each month that a person delays filing. There is no further incentive to delay filing after age 70. Weyner gave an example of Madame X. At her FRA of 66, she would receive 100 percent of her benefit, which equals $2,000 per month. If Madame X retired at the age of 62 (prior to her FRA), she would receive only 75 percent of her benefit, which would equal $1,500 per month. If she delayed retirement until age 70, Madame X would receive 132 percent of her FRA benefit equivalent to $2,640 a month.

ary 2, 2016 who is eligible for benefits both as a retired worker and as a spouse (or a divorced spouse) must apply for both benefits at the same time. This is referred to as “deemed filing” because when someone applies for one benefit, that person is “deemed” to have also applied for the other. The spouse receives the higher of the two benefits whether that is her own earnings or her spousal benefit. There is no longer an option to receive a spousal benefit at full retirement age while delaying, until the age of 70, the use of one’s own retirement benefit thereby allowing it to grow in value. Deemed filing applies to retirement benefits only. It does not apply to survivor’s benefits. The second loophole addressed by the Bipartisan Budget Act is the voluntary suspension of benefits, also referred to as “file and suspend.” Retirees may still voluntarily suspend benefits at full retirement age in order to earn higher benefits through delayed filing. Effective April 30, 2016, when retiree benefits are voluntarily suspended, spousal benefits are also suspended. This change preserves the fairness of the incentive to delay filing so that couples cannot simultaneously receive a benefit

while receiving a bonus for delayed filing for another benefit. Under the new law, anyone who has already filed and suspended their benefit is grandfathered in. The changes to file and suspend apply to married spouses only. A divorced spouse can continue receiving spousal benefits if their ex-spouse voluntarily suspends their retirement benefits. No changes were made under the Bipartisan Budget Act to the widow benefits under Social Security. In conclusion, Weyner reviewed the characteristics of Social Security that make it a valuable asset. Social Security is essentially unaffected by market changes. It is adjusted for inflation, serves as a tax advantage income and is backed by the government. And, perhaps most importantly, it provides lifetime income for retirees, the disabled and survivors. Weyner indicated his company is not endorsed or sanctioned by the Social Security Administration or any other government agency. In addition, he clarified that the purpose of his presentation was not to provide tax advice but rather to inform people about the changes to the Social Security benefit and filing process that went into effect earlier this year.

COMMENTARY

Veterans Parade Essay Contest accepting entries

The definition of ‘team’ The typical raucous football night feel at Sage Park in Berlin was tempered a bit Sept. 16 as the community came together to honor Nick Zuk, a local teenager who succumbed to leukemia in June.

“This is just incredible,” Zuk’s mother said. “Football was his whole world.”

A gritty football player, Zuk would have been a senior this year.

Zuk was diagnosed with cancer during his sophomore year. The disease went into remission, however, and Zuk, always the fighter, began rebuilding his strength, hoping to return to football for his senior campaign.

At Berlin’s first home game of the season, a monument memorializing the teen was unveiled. The powerful, stone-wrapped display features a plaque and a bronze helmet. Zuk’s Redcoats pass directly by the structure when entering and exiting Scalise Field, and it’s expected that, going forward, Berlin players will lay a hand on the monument as they head into battle. What a beautiful tribute.

“He never gave up, he was a fighter,” said Berlin football player Nick Lojko, a senior.

Sadly, that plan was not to be. The cancer came roaring back. Zuk died June 25, and three days later hundreds of people came out to Sage Park to mourn the 17-year-old. Paper bags filled with tea light candles were laid out on the football field to form a heart and Zuk’s jersey number, 53, as his friends, family and teammates

consoled one another. That night, Zuk’s aunt, Wendi Zuk, said her nephew is “The strongest fighter there will ever be.” Brianna Zuk, the young man’s cousin, echoed that. “He was always so strong,” she said. “I’m so proud of him.” In memory of their fallen brother, this season, the Redcoats will line up one starter short for their first offensive play each game. Zuk is the missing lineman. Now, that is the definition of “team.” Good luck this year, Berlin. A lot of people will be pulling for you guys. – Originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal.

Connecticut middle school students may enter the “Connecticut Veterans Parade Essay Contest” by writing what the heroism and commitment of U.S. veterans means to them. COMMENTARY

Real reforms needed to keep government clean Recently, my campaign completed the process of receiving a contribution from 150 different people within Berlin and Southington and raising a total of $5,000 in small donations. This meets the goal required to receive a grant of $28,000 from the State of Connecticut to fund the rest of my campaign, a grant I have decided not to apply for.

has been cut, or that hard working people are being laid off, while still millions of taxpayer dollars are spent to enable politicians to lob insults at each other. None of this is right, and I know it. I am funding my campaign only through small donations, and I feel that other candidates should follow suit.

Some may say that this program is in place in order to protect our taxpayers from This would be one grant of political corruption. I once the many that are given to felt that this may be the case, state legislature candidates but now realize that this is in Connecticut, grants that far from the truth. The state legislature from donating to political decided against cutting this campaigns, nor does it have program in the spring. A misstrict enough controls for take, in my view. I think that how candidates can spend spending millions of dollars the taxpayer money they reof taxpayer money to subsiceive. Not only that, do we dize political campaigns is really think that with public wrong and that this program financing our legislators are should be ended. not beholden to the special I recognize that my decision interests that can offer them a high paying job when they leaves me with more than finally leave the government, a 5 to 1 funding disadvanor even worse, can legally tage against my opponent and I recognize that this may employ them while they still work for the government? make it far more difficult to win this election.

“I think [the team’s performance] was amazing, both as young men and football players,” said Aresimowicz, commending his troops for rising to the challenge of performing on a night “when we were remembering a dear, close friend.” From the start, the Redcoats played with great passion and scored two touchdowns in the first quarter.

Local roots evident in BHS alum’s book conversation. “Professor, mentor, friend,” Clifford said about his former English professor. “It just kind of blows your mind to share the stage with the people you looked up to.”

By Ashley Kus Citizen staff

The setting of Joe Clifford’s new book “December Boys” may seem familiar to Berlin readers.

Clifford’s third novel, the second in a series, is a literary thriller about a man named Jay Porter who uncovers social injustice while investigating an accident claim. The character, Clifford said, is largely based on his halfbrother, who lives in New Hampshire. However, every so often Clifford has found Jay Porter creeping into himself.

The fictional town of Ashton, New Hampshire features several landscapes and names native to Berlin such as the ‘Ashton Redcoats.’ Ashton even has a Dairy Queen and includes Berlin roads such as, ‘Orchard Road’ and ‘Camel’s Back.’ “Where you grew up shapes who you are,” the author said. “My roots are here.” Now Clifford resides in the San Francisco Bay area with his family. In the late 80’s however, he was a Berlin High School student. Members of his graduating class of ‘88 gathered at the Berlin-Peck Memorial

For more information, contact Jack Rudy at jrudy@berlinschools.org.

Clifford’s realistic characters are not completely fictional. He said almost all his characters are real people with real names. Some characters are even based on his old Berlin classmates. “It helped me to picture them,” he said. “It helps me to think about real people.”

Screenings are performed, first come, first served, at the children’s ride area, on Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The testing is done with a camera-like device. The child sees and hears digital birds chirping while the camera takes accurate measurements of the eye in minutes. Parents are given a printed report of the screening.

Professor asks: ‘Does 9/11 matter?’ By Barbara Helming Special to The Citizen

Sept. 11 marked the 15th anniversary of the worst terror attack in American history. On Sept. 12, Dr. Matthew Warshauer, a professor of history at Central Connecticut State University, led a presentation at the college about how the history and memory of 9/11 will change over time as the generations that experienced that day gain more distance from it. Warshauer, a widely recognized and sought-after lecturer in the field of American political and constitutional history, initially asked the audience at CCSU, “Does 9/11 matter?” The audience answered resoundingly that it does. Warshauer then took attendees by surprise when he reported that this year’s high school freshman are the first of a generation born after 9/11. According to Warshauer, “It is virtually impossible for

one generation to touch another generation’s nationalism.” Nationalism refers to the emotion, patriotism, longing to be understood and the suffering that goes with the experiences of a generation. This year’s freshmen have no connection to the 9/11 tragedy and wonder why adults can not “get over it.” Currently, only one in 10 Americans remember Pearl Harbor and one in five Americans were born after 9/11. In addition, the nationalism experienced by those that witnessed 9/11 will fade over time, despite the proclamations that we will never forget.

Warshauer explained that millennials were just coming of age when 9/11 occurred. To millennial Americans, Osama bin Laden was the bogeyman, the monster in the closet. And it was almost exclusively those millennials that publicly celebrated bin Laden’s death.

Warshauer asserts that those born between 2001 and 2020 — known as Generation Z — should really be referred to as the 9/11 generation. Their world has been fundamentally shaped by 9/11 and bin Laden. In the last 15 years, they have experienced: The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, partisan gridlock in the face of foreign policy, economic and environmental crises, and the impending threat of world Islamic terrorism. Warshauer, the author of four books; two on Andrew Jackson and two on Connecticut and the Civil War, indicated that 9/11 is a cultural touchstone for Americans. The symbol of American capitalism, the Twin Towers, was destroyed in the attack. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the 102 minutes between the impact and the second tower collapse. Prior to 9/11, Americans believed that our two great oceans would protect us

from attack. In the past, major battles occurred between countries. The 9/11 attacks were carried out by individuals who were killed in the act of terrorism. Americans gained a new understanding of the sacrifices made by first responders as a result of the 9/11 EMS response and subsequent loss of responders’ lives. In contrast to previous hijacking incidents, 9/11 represented the first time that commercial airlines had been used as missiles. And prior to 9/11, steel frame skyscrapers were not expected to collapse in a fire. Some Americans refer to 9/11 as a 21st century Pearl Harbor. Warshauer disagrees with that comparison because he believes that the United States was headed towards involvement in World War II before Pearl Harbor. The U.S. was not, however, headed towards war with Iraq before 9/11.
