Spiders go to space in Halloween display By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
There are no ghosts, goblins or ghouls in Dan Valuk’s Halloween display this year, just lots of flying spiders. “It just came to me one day,” the Berlin resident said. “I wanted to do something unusual for Halloween.”
Valuk, a retired McGee Middle School teacher, decided to create an entire space scene with spiders wearing mini jet packs in his front yard on Carriage Drive. The project was completed last week, and it’s getting plenty of attention. “It’s amazing,” said his neighbor Norm Dickinson. “He does something different See Spiders, A13

Berlin students prep for annual cabaret By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Berlin High School chorus students are dancing and singing their way to this weekend’s cabaret.
Unlike that big musical, the cabaret allows students to choose their own songs to perform from a variety of popular musicals. “What’s great about this is they get a choice in it,” said
will be their first cabaret experience.
“A lot of people are able to do their own song from different musicals,” said Anna Woodin, a junior. “It’s a chance to be a lead.”
“I like it so far,” said Nathaniel Hansen, a freshman.
This is Woodin’s third year participating in the cabaret. This year she will be singing a solo from the musical, “She Loves Me.” “It’s such a variety,” she said. Maya Wolanin, a senior, said she has met new friends and bonded with old ones through the cabaret. “It’s like a family,” she said. “We all get to sing together.” Some of the songs featured will be from musicals like “Rent,” “Wicked,” “Spelling Bee,” and “Grease.” For some students, this
style,” the BHS senior said.
Hansen’s musical talent runs in the family. His brother Ethan was the lead in the school’s production of “The Music Man” last year. “It’s really fun,” the freshman said. He’s even planning on following in his brother’s footsteps by being part of the school’s spring performance. The title of that show will be revealed at the end of the cabaret. This year, the cabaret will conclude with the number “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” from the musical “Annie Get Your Gun.”
Last year the cabaret drew an audience of nearly 200.

“We would have had their input before that time,” he said. The change of venue was initiated at the beginning of the month when Principal Francis Kennedy suggested that graduation be moved to the high school gym. The Board of Education then voted to approve the recommendation. The time of graduation was also changed, to 6 p.m., later than in recent years. The ceremony is planned to be held on the last day of school, rather than a Sunday. Recently, the board adopted a policy to allow one junior and one senior student to sit on the board as representatives of Berlin High School. Oakes said much of what the school board considers impacts current students.
“We’re here for the students,” he said. School Superintendent Dave Erwin said he agreed that student representation may have created a different outcome regarding the decision to change the graduation venue. “I think if students knew what to expect we would have gotten good input,” he said. Senior class Vice President Evan Hilbie was among the group of students who attended the Oct. 11 meeting in protest of the graduation decision. “I think it was wrong that the decision to have the graduation in the gym, a pretty big decision, was made without asking the opinion of anyone in our class,” Hilbie said.
tions. “No one’s intent was to turn a happy event into one that is upsetting people,” he said. Board member Julia Motte echoed Erwin’s thoughts that night as she addressed the students and parents. “We truly thought this is how you wanted to show off the new facility,” she said. “Obviously, we were clearly wrong.” Several people in attendance said they thought parents should have been kept in the loop. “The will of the students was missed in the process,” said
resident Jon Leary.
verse the decision, Erwin said, a committee of students, parents and administration may form to discuss future graduations.
A junior and senior will be appointed to the board in November following the election. New representatives will be chosen every year.
“We would like to hear possibilities,” the superintendent said. “We appreciate people speaking and putting forth their thoughts.”
The board will continue to discuss the graduation change with parents, students and administration.
The board is scheduled to meet next on Monday, Oct. 24.
Erwin said the venue is usually booked in October. It is possible for the board to look into other options, like Sage Park, he noted.

The materials for the spiders range from old wiring, to metal wine bottle holders.
every year.” Valuk said his six grandchildren are also fans of the decorations. Nearly 90 percent of the set up is handmade. Valuk uses household and recycled items. He often reuses past display pieces. For more than a few years now, Valuk has created lawn decorations for Christmas and Halloween. One year he made an entire winter carousel, complete with a Santa ‘moose,’ out of recycled materials. The Halloween display this year is no different. A flying saucer sits in the middle of his yard made out of everything from patio tables to an old Tiffany’s lamp.
“I reuse things,” he said. “I like to create with stuff that I find.” Every year he picks a theme for his displays. This fall, alliteration played into his decision with “Spiders in Space.” The display includes a massive spider’s web made out of old tubing strung with wire. While some spiders look harmless, others are larger-than-life and hover above the smaller spiders in the lawn. Everything lights up with a combination of solar lights and old Christmas lights.
“Diversity,” he said. “Everything comes in all shapes and colors, even spiders.”

Letters to the Editor Advocating for us To the editor: Joe Aresimowicz has been an asset to our community. He is more than our state representative. He is a father, coach, veteran and leader who understands what’s important to his community – public safety, education, and state funding for vital infrastructure projects. During my time as mayor, Joe was a great advocate on the Town Council and a valued partner in Hartford as our state representative. Throughout his years of service, Joe has always been a dedicated public servant who is proud to represent all who reside in his district. On Nov. 8, please join me in supporting my friend Joe. Adam Salina Former Berlin mayor
Vote ‘no’ To the editor: Berlin Republicans have spent over $10,000 to promote charter changes. They have used rhetoric that this will be good for Berlin. It will not. It will create an education system managed by politics, not by citizens. It will create a Town Council that will be powerless and a nonelected Finance Board that will control what we do. Why does one party want to see this done? In 2003, this same group tried to cut the budget so deeply that arts and sports were on the verge of elimination in our schools. In 2004, we removed them from office. Vote “no”! Dave Erickson Kensington
A true ‘champion’ To the editor: I am writing in support of Rep. Cathy Abercrombie, who has tirelessly served the
83rd District of Meriden, Berlin and Kensington for more than a decade. She is a strong supporter and advocate of social service programs, she stands up for children and families and she is strong on educational issues. It is no surprise that in 2013 she was honored as a children’s champion by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance. We need someone like Cathy looking out for our children because they are our most critical resource. I urge my fellow voters to support her on Nov. 8. Esperanza Lesmes Berlin
Empty promises To the editor: Signs from the Berlin Republicans supporting the proposed changes to the Town Charter say that a “yes” vote will mean “better schools.” No explanation, just the blanket statement that the revised charter will create better schools.
had the opportunity to be coached by Joe. I have witnessed firsthand Joe’s unmatched work ethic. He has been a tremendous mentor and a role model, and I know he will continue to be a great state representative for this town.
a member of the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut Department of Veterans’ Affairs, I know firsthand of Joe’s commitment to veterans and I will be voting for Joe on Nov. 8.

Let’s get it right Compassionate advocate To the editor: I confidently recommend Catherine Abercrombie’s re-election to the position of State Representative in the Connecticut General Assembly for the 83rd House District of Meriden, Berlin and Kensington. During her tenure in the General Assembly, Rep. To the editor: I am supporting Joe Aresimowicz for reelection to the House of Representatives. To the editor: I had the privilege of working with a dedicated group of commissioners who spent many hours of discussion, debate and compromise in a sincere effort to improve the town charter. There are good ideas in the proposed revisions, but as we have now heard, there may be flaws in the design and this is causing a heated division in town. A town charter is what ultimately should bring a community together, not tear it apart. So I would encourage voters to vote “no” and encourage the council to continue the dialogue. Let’s take some more time to get it right. Maggie Morelli Charter Revision Commission member
More transparency, accountability To the editor: During last November’s town election, the Republican candidates pledged to create a Charter Revision Commission to review areas of our Town Charter, including greater input on town budgets and a reformed Board of Education. I am thankful to the commission members. I find it sad that Democrats who appointed their members to the commission now reject every proposal which their own members passed. The commission made its best effort to be fair and nonpartisan as it grappled with key issues. It is telling that
nearly all their key issues received unanimous support. Many residents feel these changes will make the town more accountable and more transparent to the residents. Why is this needed? Did you know that the Berlin Board of Education has spent almost $100,000 on legal fees to keep secret a report concerning intimidation charges made by a coach against former BOE Chairman Gary Brochu? Why has the board supported Mr. Brochu when the coach was trying to do his job? Did you know that the superintendent and other administrators donate to the Berlin Democratic Town Committee even though he doesn’t live in town? Isn’t the BOE supposed to be nonpartisan? Many former and current BOE members are also members of the Democrat Town Committee. Why does the BOE feel it is necessary to have discussions in private and the votes in public? Why are all votes 9-0? Why do they not allow other opinions to be voiced publicly? This does not sound like a school system that supports and teaches respect and diversity. With the charter amendments, there will be a healthy debate of the issues decided in open session. Neither party can have a “super-majority” on Town Council. This will lead to compromise and communication across party lines. Please vote “yes” on the five questions for transparency and accountability. Anne Reilly Berlin

I too was upset about the change of venue for the graduation ceremony and came to hear the reasons why and support my fellow parents. What I heard at the meeting was disturbing. The BOE did not tell the parents the truth. BOE President Tim Oakes indicated that the BOE had not made a decision. But according to the Sept. 26 meeting minutes, all nine BOE members, including Tim Oakes, voted to approve BHS Principal Kennedy’s recommendation of moving the location from CCSU’s Welte Hall to the BHS gym. Sounds and reads like a decision to me. Was this spring training? Was this vote just practice? It is my opinion that this decision was in the making for a long time, was not sudden, and was railroaded through without any discussion with the graduating seniors or

Time for new ideas To the editor:
Eleven former members of the Board of Education are giving the impression the BOE is a politics-free zone. Yet, they urge you to vote “no” on all questions, including electing the Mayor, votes on large projects, even the grammatical changes. They are clearly espousing the Democrats’ view on charter change. It’s no surprise; nine of the 11 signatories are Democrats. In fact, since 2005, 82 percent of the members on the BOE were Democrats, and six of those years, eight or more members were Democrats. The reality is, the BOE has been a Democrat stronghold for years. It’s time to introduce new ideas. Vote “yes” for charter revision. Andra Lou Millerd
parents, students, and others at the BOE meeting on Oct 11. It represented a grassroots response to very real surprise and anger that could have so easily been managed better. While I applauded a marked improvement in BHS administration and teacher communication under the leadership of Principal Kennedy, I was dismayed that he would not have considered this “project” important enough to solicit feedback from the stakeholders. The BOE voted for the change on Sept. 26, with only an administration proposal and no apparent public participation. On Oct. 11, after a robust audience of citizens, the BOE committed to reconsider the issue on Oct. 24. I hope the other board members will come to agree with member Motte when she said “obviously, we were clearly wrong.”

More choices To the editor: Those who are trying to convince us to vote against charter reform are running a dishonest campaign. Both the proposed Board of Finance and the Town Council will be elected by the people, and, in fact, we voters will have more choices than we do now. Vote for more transparency To the editor: Last year the Republican candidates for Town Council ran on a platform of change, and the revision of the Town Charter addresses changes that many citizens brought to the attention of the BRTC members who were obtaining signatures for several referendums that were pulled by the BRTC over the past year which gave the citizens a voice. The citizens also had to sign petitions in order to have the Charter Commission formed. When the Town Council had a Democratic majority, they budgeted for the charter revision. What changed their mind? The only difference between last year and today is they no longer have a majority or control. Aren’t the Democrats the party of “transparency”? Citizens should educate themselves on the changes and vote “yes” if they want more of a say and transparency in how the town is run. Sandra Coppola Vice Chair, Berlin Republican Town Committee

An open-space push in Berlin The town of Berlin takes great pride in its country setting. Local scenes of lush woods, mountains, and a pond, surrounded by green grass, are featured on the homepage of its municipal website.
Each fall, thousands turn out for Berlin’s agricultural fair and barns and farms still dot the landscape. Also, the town boasts some 2,200 acres of undeveloped land and 50 miles of trails.
Just below those idyllic small-town images is a brief description of how Berlin — the geographic center of Connecticut — came to be.
Berlin has been taking a long-term view in regard to preserving open space. Since the early 2000’s, when the town first began acquiring land, the municipality has purchased 1,200 acres.
The story goes that, in 1659, Sergeant Richard Beckley purchased 300 acres from Chief Tarramuggus and built a home for his family, becoming the town’s first settler. Fast-forward nearly 400 years and present day Berlin is home to some 20,000 residents and a robust business community, including the Berlin Turnpike. While Berlin cannot accurately be described as a sleepy town these days, Sergeant Beckley likely would be pleased to see that most of his former stomping grounds have not lost their bucolic charm.
Jim Mahoney, town coordinator for economic development, is proud to see so much real estate available for residents to enjoy. “I think we’re making great strides,” he told the Record-Journal. Kensington Orchards and the Chotkowski family property are Berlin’s latest acquisitions. Now, the town is looking to integrate the two areas to complete the connection of hundreds of acres of open space, which includes the Hatchery Brook Conservation Area and Bicentennial Park. – Originally published in the Meriden Record-Journal
