Golfers not happy about early end for season passes By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Season pass holders at Timberlin are not happy that their season is being cut short this year. Passes expire at the end of the month, while in previous years the pass was valid for as long as the course stayed open. “The season pass holders will not pay to play at Timberlin after our passes expire. We will travel to other local courses,” said Ken Asal, secretary of the Timberlin Men’s Club and a board member of the Saturday golf group. See Passes, A14 | Kate Liburdi, submitted
Twins prefer giving on birthday By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Instead of playing with birthday presents, Willard Elementary School students Ariel and Dario Liburdi donated $405 to the Red Cross. “I was really proud of them,” said their mother, Kate Liburdi. “It’s a real privilege to be in a situation where you are able to donate to others.”
Family and friends who attended the 7-year-old twins’ birthday party in September brought monetary donations as well as canned food for the local food pantry. The concept of not asking for birthday gifts is a family tradition, said Kate Liburdi. After doing some research, the family decided to request donations for the Red Cross Baton Rouge Relief Fund. In August, devastating floods hit the Baton Rouge area.
On Nov. 8, the twins brought their donation to the local Red Cross. “We can’t thank Ariel and Dario enough for their generous donation to the Red Cross,” said Mario Bruno, CEO American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region. “What an amazing way to give back to their community in honor of their birthday. Town fire departments keep tree lighting going By Ashley Kus Citizen staff
Residents will get to see Santa light the tree in Veterans Memorial Park again this year thanks to the Berlin fire departments. “Traditions around here are important,” said Andy Hrubiec, assistant chief of the South Kensington department and chair of the event committee. “They’re hard to sustain with everyone’s busy schedules.”

The annual tree lighting almost didn’t happen this year after local group Raising Berlin could not commit to the event. The committee of Berlin mothers had been getting the community together to light the tree since 2009.

While this year will be similar to Raising Berlin’s past tree lighting events, Simons said changes could be coming in the future. “We plan on making it bigger,” he said. The fire departments are looking at adding a torch parade with Christmas-themed floats and decorated fire trucks. He said torch parades are held at tree lighting events by the shore.

Under Raising Berlin, the event grew every year. The fire departments are hoping it continues to expand. Several members of Raising Berlin will still be on hand to assist. There will be a toy drive and a “Fill the Boot,” where monetary donations will be given to Berlin veterans. The tree lighting kicks off Saturday, Nov. 26, at 4:30 p.m. Santa will light the tree at 5 p.m. Kids can then meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. “The kids need this, we need this,” said Simons. “We need something this good in our lives.”

Obituaries James E. Marzi KENSINGTON — James E. Marzi, 78, of Kensington, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, was ca r r ie d b y angels on Tuesday, N o v. 15, 2016, after a courageous battle. He married the love of his life, the late Sheila Bentz Marzi, on Oct. 11, 1958, in Manchester. Born on July 22, 1938, in New Britain, to the late Elsie (Lenzi) Marzi and Louis Marzi, he resided in New Britain, and Newington for many years before moving to Kensington. He will be joining his wife in Heaven for a movie on Point O’ Woods Beach, just as they did when they first met 63 years ago. The traditions of summers spent at the beach and winters in St. Maarten with their friends who became family, are memories that will last forever. He graduated from New Britain High School class of 1956, and went on to graduate from the University of Hartford. He was
Connie Colangelo devoted to Marzi Florist, a family owned and operated business for over 86 years, where he spent much of his life creating beautiful flower arrangements for every occasion. In his free time, he could be found relaxing and watching sports in his recliner, enjoying a Capitol Lunch hot dog or doubling-down at the casino. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Lori and her husband, Brian H. Bosco, of Essex; and his cherished son, James W. Marzi, of Kensington. He has become an angel to his three grandchildren, Kathryn Psarofagis, and her husband, Demetrios, of Trumbull, Sarah Elizabeth Phillips, and her fiancé, Conor Sullivan, of Middletown, and James N. Marzi, of Kensington. He is also survived by his brother, Louis Marzi, Jr., of East Berlin; Charles Phillips, the father of his granddaughters; Jill Xiarhos, the mother of his grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his in-laws, William and Catherine Bentz; his sister, Lorraine Firetto; and his sis-
ters-in-law, Lois Marzi and Kathleen Fay. The Marzi family would like to thank the entire staff of Hartford Hospital, especially Patricia Veronneau, and the staff of the Jefferson House for the care and compassion shown to him during his stays there. Funeral services took place on Monday, Nov. 21, at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Paul Church, Kensington. He was laid to rest beside his wife in Point O’ Woods Cemetery, Connecticut Road, South Lyme. Jim was a florist who took pride in his work and flowers are most welcomed and encouraged. To share a message of sympathy with his family, please visit us at www.newingtonmemorial. com.

Financial advisor explains the intricacies of Medicare By Barbara Helming Special to The Citizen
ing. There is a seven-month initial enrollment interval to sign up for Medicare beginning three months before your 65th birthday month and extending three months after the month of your birthday.
Peter Leppones, Financial Adviser at Apella Capital, presented a seminar on Medicare enrollment and coverage to an audience of several people at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Leppones reported that, as people approach retirement, they need both a financial plan and a sense that they will be okay after they retire. Leppones reviewed the components of Medicare, which has been our national health insurance since 1965. Medicare is administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Leppones explained that Medicare covers 100 percent of hospitalizations for up to 60 days. Medical services are covered at 80 percent of the Medicare-approved amount. Preventative care is covered 100 percent. Medicare Parts A and B are administered by the government. Part A provides coverage for hospitalizations. There is no premium for Part A. Medicare Part B covers physicians visits, lab work and other medical services. A premium is paid for Part B.

Parts C and D are provided by a private insurer that contracts with Medicare. Part C is the Medicare Advantage Plan and serves as an HMO or PPO covering hospitalizations, physician visits and medications.
tion drug coverage provided by private insurance companies. You choose the best plan for your circumstances (considering coverage needs and premium costs) during open enrollment. People should enroll in Part D at the same time they enroll in Parts A and B.
In other words, Part C combines Parts A, B and usually D. A premium is paid for As part of his presentation, Part C and members must choose in-network providers. Leppones discussed the five common mistakes people Medicare Part D is prescrip-
make as they prepare for retirement. First, if you don’t enroll in Medicare during your initial enrollment period you will pay a penalty. That penalty is not a onetime payment but rather an ongoing monthly penalty. Anyone receiving Social Security at age 65 will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. A person may decline Part B if they wish to continue work-
Medicare coverage starts the first of the month in which one turns 65. Those that sign up in the months after their birthday, however, will likely have a gap in coverage. Anyone who has not enrolled in Medicare during his enrollment interval may enroll during the general enrollment interval Jan. 1 to March 31 each year for coverage beginning July 1 of that year. In addition, there is a eightmonth Special Enrollment option, typically without penalty, for people to enroll in Medicare the month after their employment ends or their group health insurance coverage ceases. The second mistake is not opting for the right private insurance to complement Medicare coverage resulting in paying a premium that is too high or having excessive out-of-pocket medical costs. Third, if increased health costs in retirement are not anticipated, people could run out of money or be unable to afford the care they need. Once a person is no See Medicare, A19

longer covered by an employer’s group health plan, dental and vision coverage ceases. In addition, retirees need to pay out of pocket for long term care expenses, hearing aids, cosmetic surgery, acupuncture or other alternative therapies, costs above the Medicare approved rate and medical expenses not covered by co-insurance.
Leppones strongly encouraged anyone interested in retitling their assets (as in giving the house to children) to work with a lawyer. There are many scenarios to consider before doing this. Included on the list are what happens if a child divorces or becomes named in a lawsuit. The final mistake that people make is failing to understand the emotional and mental stress that illness would have on family members. Long term care policies are a means to protect the family from the burden of caring for a loved one. Such coverage also allows one to choose the type and location of care desired. Having long term care will likely prevent or delay the need to do a spend down for Medicaid.
Volunteers needed The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program is looking for volunteer drivers throughout Connecticut to transport cancer patients to and from treatments. Some treatments will not allow cancer patients to operate machinery, including a motor vehicle. Other patients do not have family members they can rely on for support, or their family may simply not be able to take time away from work. Volunteers should be available once a month or once a week, be age 18 to 85, have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with insurance. For information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.
Resource guide Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging is offering the free Dementia Caregiver Resource Guide to assist families and
caregivers in managing the dementia disease process. Topics include an overview of dementia, understanding behaviors, good communication, safety issues, structuring a day with activities, handling legal and financial matters, and taking care of the caregiver. The guide also offers resources including related books and websites. The resource guide was made possible through a $2.1 million grant awarded by the state Department of Social Services and funded by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in 2014. The guide is available at Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging locations or at cthealthyaging.org. Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging is located at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, Bradley Memorial and New Britain General campuses, MidState Medical Center, and Windham Hospital. The fourth mistake is waiting until one becomes sick or incapacitated to start the planning process. Leppones reviewed how important it is to put one’s wishes in writing, which assures that those wishes are known. In addition, stress on the family is reduced because they know what that person wanted.

In addition, Medicare does not cover medical care outside of the country. Monthly premiums must also be paid (for example Part B will be $121.80 per month). Medicare deductibles must also be considered including $1,288 per illness for hospitalizations, $166 per year for Part B and $360 per year for Part D. Medicare Part D has a “donut hole.” Once $3,300 in prescription coverage per year is reached, retirees must pay out of pocket until total annual drug costs reach $4,800.

Longtime volleyball coach Tarigo calls it a career By Jim Bransfield Special to The Citizen
Bob Tarigo is going to Brazil. No, he’s not skipping the country, but now that he’s retired after coaching the Berlin High girls volleyball team for 34 years, he and his wife Pat will have time to visit his son and his wife in Brazil to see their new grandson, Connor, all of two months old. He’ll also have time to visit his other grandchild, Kayla, who lives in Maryland. She plays — what else? — volleyball at the middle school level. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do other than see my grandchildren more often,” said Tarigo, a Southington resident. “I just thought that after 34 years, it was time, especially when I was coaching children of kids I coached.” It’s been quite a run. Tarigo started coaching volleyball at Berlin High in 1992 and kind of fell into the job. “I was fortunate to get the job,” he said. “I didn’t teach in Berlin, I taught in New Britain for 35 years. But I played volleyball with a friend who knew the position was open and he encouraged me to apply. I did and have been there 34 years.” Over those 34 years, Tarigo compiled a career record of 453-224. “I would always tell the girls that they deserved the wins and I deserved the losses,” said Tarigo. His teams won 13 Northwest Conference championships and in the 1990s, won eight NWC crowns.
Former Berlin High School volleyball players and coaches came out to a recent match to show their support for retiring coach Bob Tarigo.
was memorable, but there were intangible things that were most important. “It is so gratifying to see the girls go on and have successful lives,” he said. “I always thought of the gymnasium as a classroom. I might have 28 kids in my sixth grade class in New Britain, then I would have a volleyball class of 30 or more after that at Berlin.” There were just 15 girls in the entire program when Tarigo started.
“But as the years went by, we’d have 55 or 60 come out. We built the program so that now, for the last five or six “He is so dedicated, so hard-working and so commit- years, we’ve had a freshmen team,” said Tarigo. “That was ted to his kids,” said assistant coach Nancy DeBlasio, a Ber- something I always wanted and former AD Jim Day made lin High alumna and former it happen. player for Tarigo. “He never missed a practice or a game “I enjoyed the school system in 34 years.” and even though I wasn’t a Tarigo said the championships were highlights and his team’s run to the state Class S championship game in 1984
teacher in Berlin, they accepted me. I also had a great relationship with every AD I worked for. I enjoyed everything about it, but I especially
enjoyed the kids. They are what I enjoyed the most.” DeBlasio, only his fifth assistant in those 34 years, said, “His ability to make kids grow, to foster relationships with the kids so that kids keep in touch for many years is just amazing. He’s so knowledgeable about the game and his competitive nature make him special. “To coach alongside of him, to coach with the man I played for, was a great experience. His people skills are excellent and he was one of my best coaches.” Tarigo has piled up honors along the way. He was selected to coach the Connecticut High School All-Star team in 1993 and 2012, named the Gatorade Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1998, named Connecticut High School Coach of the Year in 2004, selected a National Coach of the Year Finalist in 2011, was inducted in to the New Britain Sports
Hall of Fame in 2015, was also inducted into the Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame this year and on Tuesday, Nov. 22, was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Volleyball Hall of Fame at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. Tarigo said that over the years his coaching style has changed. “I was maybe a little bit aggressive early,” he said. “But over time I became, I don’t know, maybe a bit more subdued.” There used to be a rule in volleyball that coaches had to remain seated, apparently a rule that chafed a bit early on. “One year the kids bought me one of those camp chairs, you know, one of those chairs it’s harder to get out of,” he said. “I don’t know if that was their intent, but it was harder to get out of that chair.” Tarigo very much wanted to name his ADs – George Hall, Day, Dan Scavone and the
current AD, Jeff Mauri. “It’s very important to have a good relationship with your AD,” he said. “And I think I did.” He also listed his assistants — Donna Lidestran, Pat Gaedeke, Josh Richards, Caitlyn Riley and DeBlasio. “Riley and DeBlasio were former players,” he said. “It’s always nice when players come back.” The team and coaches threw Tarigo a surprise party at Berlin’s final home match. Those that attended included former players and former assistant coaches. “We were happy to do that,” said DeBlasio. “It was a great night.” So the coaching time that spanned the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, is over. Time to go to Brazil.

Young professionals, entrepreneurs sought The Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce has formed a “Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs” group in the Central Connecticut region. The goals of this group are to educate and motivate the next generation of business leaders to start and grow
businesses across our region and state; provide networking and social opportunities for these new leaders to meet and form lasting business relationships and gain a stronger voice in setting policy and priorities to affect and improve economic and community development across the state and region.
It is envisioned that this group will hold a series of feedback sessions for businesses, non profit and community projects and entities; provide social and business networking gatherings at local venues; and host various civic, service, and professional education events and activities with leading ex-
perts in business and leaders in community development. The group will also maintain an active web and social media presence. Membership in the group is not limited to Chamber members, but is open to any young professional, entre-
preneur, or student (age 40 and under) pursuing a career in business. For more information, contact Mark Walerysiak, Jr. at the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce at mark@centralctchambers. org or 860-584-4718.
