Ida (Mangan) Ragazzi, the first mayor, when a new form of town government came into Berlin 20 years ago, died Wednesday, Dec. 7. She was 90. “She provided the leadership that was needed at that time,” said Fred Jortner, chair of the Democratic Town Committee. Jortner served on the first Town Council in Berlin alongside Ragazzi in 1995. Ragazzi became the first woman mayor, and first mayor of the new town government, when she was ap-

She went on to serve as deputy mayor from 1999 to 2001 and again in 2003 to 2005 “We thought she would be the perfect person to lead the town into the new era,” said Paul Argazzi, former councilor. The Republican was part of the minority party at the time but said Ragazzi was respected by all. Her husband Jack was mayor more than a decade earlier when the town operated under the Board of Selectmen and Town Meeting form of government. The popular Santa Express program wrapped up its 10th year Sunday. For a donation of $10, families register their children to receive a gift from Santa Claus, who shows up at their home on a firetruck. This year, the program was sold out within a couple hours of the first day of registration, leading to nearly 300 visits by St. Nick. The Santa Express fire truck is decked out in Christmas lights and plays Christmas music as it completes its stops. “It’s grown so much,” said coordinator Amy Pajor. | Photo by Lee Roski

Bees seeking host families

PETS OF THE WEEK

The New Britain Bees baseball team is seeking host families for Bees players for the 2017 baseball season. Hosting a Bee team member provides families with the chance to get to know a professional athlete. Host families also receive exclusive benefits not available to the general public during the 2017 season. Becoming a Bees host family is easy. The only requirements for host families to provide are a private bedroom for the player and use of a bathroom and kitchen. Any other amenities that families are willing and able to offer are appreciated by the player and team. For a complete list of frequently asked questions, as well as additional information about the Bees’ host family program, visit http://nbbees.com/community/host-families/ or contact Allison Farrell at 860-826-BEES (2337) or email afarrell@nbbees.com.

Tommy is a wonderful, personable three year old boy. He is easygoing and gets along well with all people and other animals. Tommy has the holiday spirit all year long and will add joy to your family. Buttons is a gentle, colorful little girl. She is six month old and still very much a kitten. Buttons needs a little nurturing as she is just a little shy. She will gain confidence in a loving home. Cooking up apple pie bites When thinking about a dessert to top off a big holiday meals, I kept in mind that often family members are too full from the main courses to eat dessert. So I decided to look for a recipe that wouldn’t be too filling. While browsing Pinterest, a recipe for apple pie bites caught my attention. I started by slicing two apples and placing them in

top of that and an apple slice on the broad side of the roll. Starting with the apple slice end, I rolled up the crescents, making sure to tuck in any corners. The rolls were spaced out on the parchment paper and a light coating of the melted butter went on top. They were baked at 375 degrees for about ten minutes, or until golden brown. Apple pie bites are perfect for this holiday. While the first batch was baking my coworkers slowly filtered through, attracted by the smell. Once the treats cooled enough to be eaten, they were gone!

who earned less than 50 percent of the median income — roughly $40,000 for a family of three, including a single parent of two children. During the forum, parents and child care providers said the program helps parents who can’t afford to send their children to daycare centers. As a result, parents warned that they may have to work less, or stop altogether, to ensure their children have care, while daycare providers said they will lose revenue. Acting Commissioner Lisa Goodman said in a November statement announcing the eligibility change that cost drivers include an extension in the eligibility period from eight months to 12 months and increased subsidies during a three-month

job search period. There has also been an increase in the number of families enrolled in the program, she said. Rep. Melissa Ziobron, R-East Haddam suggested other factors, including cost increases built into contracts, have played a factor in the deficit. “If we’re going to talk about this, then I think we need to talk about all of the different issues and I think in order to solve the problem, everything has to be on the table,” she said. Shadae Evans works at a New Haven daycare center but said she can’t afford child care for her own young son, and expressed concern that his development is affected by a lack of access to preschool instruction. “It just hurts my heart to know that he could be delayed because he’s just going from house to house. I know the quality care that a kid needs to survive — he’s not learning the basic needs,” she said. A handful of providers, meanwhile, said the Care 4 Kids program makes up a sizeable portion of their revenue, including larger daycare centers, and that reducing or eliminating benefits means they could have to shut down. Stanley McMillen, a professor of economics at Trinity, said a 2004 study found that licensed daycare centers employed roughly 15,000 people at that time, paying approximately $324 million in wages. He also said the study found those centers spent $460 million on goods and services from suppliers. msavino@record-journal.com 203-317-2266 Twitter: @reporter_savino

Volunteer drivers needed for seniors Senior Transportation Services, Inc., a nonprofit transportation service for citizens age 55 and older, is in need of volunteer drivers.

The service provides transportation to out-of-town medical appointments and services residents of Berlin, New Britain, Meriden, Southington and Wallingford. Mileage is reimbursed.

Later, then-board president, Timothy Oakes, said the decision may have been different had there been student representation available.

For more information, call 860-224-7117 or seniortransportationservices@yahoo.com.

“We would have had their input before that time,” he said. The graduation location ended up not changing after parents and students protested the decision.

“I think it could have been avoided,” said Nappi about the controversy. “They might not be looking from our perspective.” The junior and senior will not be voting members of the board, however they will be able to give their input during meetings. They will also report on matters concerning students. “It definitely demands a lot of leadership,” Bordonaro said. Obituaries John lived his life like one big party, and to the fullest everyday. He enjoyed in his leisure, camping, snowmobiling, sunsets, Mexico, California, Vermont, Seal Beach, fast cars and anything and everything that was better than anyone else’s. He was the king of stories. From childhood memories of shining shoes and subway rides to Coney Island to very tall tales. John gave all of us lifelong protection and direction. Our hearts are deeply sadness with his passing. Those left to cherish his memory are his son, John J. Condelles, III and his beautiful daughter, Callie Grace; his daughter, Tricia Condelles and fiancé, Mark Carson and their son, Luca Luciano; his inseparable and heartbroken siblings and their spouses; his loyal and goofy lifelong friends; his many nieces and nephews; his hard working employees who he considered his family; loving friends and business colleagues; and his loving loyal admirer and companion, Mugs. A note of special thanks to the many doctors and nurses for their excellent care and kindness of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle, boss and friend. Per John’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the Condelles family invites you to a celebration of life for John to be held Monday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m. at Zingarellas Restaurant, 243 West. Main St., Plantsville. Immediately followed by the famous Acme Xmas party.

Allowing them to play through Don’t get between golfers and their clubs, especially here in the Northeast where the sport is not a year-round thing, and time on the links is precious. Berlin officials discovered this recently, with the season winding down at the town’s municipal golf course. With their Timberlin Golf Club season passes set to expire on Nov. 30, golfers pressed the Berlin Town Council and Parks & Recreation Commission to extend the passes right up until the New Year, which is usually the case. Addressing the situation in a press release, Parks & Recreation Commissioner Len Zielinski stated, “While other courses in the area continue to have their passes run through the end of the year,

the P&R Commission didn’t feel constrained to follow the same path and felt the need to try something new to help achieve the balance of our taxpaying golfers and the net operating cost to Berlin.” The November cut-off was implemented with a new fee schedule at the beginning of the year. Only recently, however, with winter setting in, did Timberlin season pass holders put up a fight. Aggravated golfers said they felt cheated, and if the passes were not extended, they would wrap up 2016 playing elsewhere. “I bought a season pass in good faith,” said Jim Norton, a Berlin golfer. “This is very shortsighted what you’re doing.” “We’re all committed that

we’re not going to pay to play after Nov. 30,” said Gerry Paradis, a member of the Timberlin Men’s Club. The Parks & Recreation Commission pushed back a bit against such comments, pointing out that season pass applications plainly stated the Nov. 30 expiration date. Still, on Monday, Nov. 28 the commission agreed to honor passes as long as Timberlin remained open for the season, per usual. In the end, Timberlin season pass holders earned themselves just one extra week of play. Citing a wintry weather forecast, the course closed for the year on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

To the editor:

Around 8:10 a.m., I see the elementary school bus coming to pick up children. The bus makes five stops to pick up students. On three of the stops, the children have to cross the road. After school, the bus goes the same route in reverse, so at three of the stops, children still have to cross the road. Kindergarten students attend a full day now so there are probably kindergarten children crossing New Britain Road. I don’t think elementary school children should have to cross a major road for the bus. Now that bad weather is coming, it makes it even more dangerous. It’s an accident waiting to happen. Desserts spelled backwards is ‘stressed’

Too dangerous My morning walk takes me down New Britain Road. I see cars with some drivers on their cell phone, some with their coffee and some their breakfast sandwiches.

Berlin golfers gathered at the Monday, Nov. 28 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting to protest the expiration date on Timberlin season passes. | Ashley Kus, The Berlin Citizen

By Jane Grant

Getting together with family and friends is something we do around the holidays. These gatherings typically include rich foods and lots of sweets. If you’re like most people, this excites and stresses you at the same time. It’s a time of year when many people “cheat” and go off their diets. Desserts spelled backwards is stressed. By making a few strategic changes now, you can stop the holiday weight gain before it happens. In fact, you can get through the holidays leaner and healthier without feeling deprived. Instead of trying to be “good” and not have any dessert and then feeling guilty afterwards when your willpower fails you, give yourself permission to eat dessert and enjoy every bite. Dessert can be part of your healthy

eating plan. The key is to put the emphasis on healthy. It’s not healthy to stuff yourself and then wallow in guilt. It is healthy to eat an amount of your favorite food (including sweets) that will leave you feeling satisfied and proud of the choices you made. In other words, eat mindfully. It’s so simple, and yet a little bit of thought and attention goes such a long way. Mindful eating can get you through the entire holiday season without gaining weight. You will eat less food and enjoy it more. • Plan ahead. Decide how you want to feel when you’re done eating. Stuffed and miserable? Or comfortable and content? Fill your plate or order your meal accordingly. • Be thankful. Before eating, take a moment to be truly thankful about where your food came from including all the people who invested their time, effort, and talent into getting it on your plate. This will increase the enjoyment and satisfaction of the meal and dessert.

• Eat only what you really want. Survey all the options and choose only your favorites. Use the “four reallys rule” when deciding what to eat. Take only what you really, really, really, really want. Don’t waste your appetite on anything else unless you really (x4) want it. • Pace yourself. Put one small bite of food in your mouth at a time, and then pause. Chew it slowly and let the flavors and experience linger before swallowing and taking another mouthful. The holiday season offers so many opportunities to practice these mindful eating tips. Instead of “dieting,” which typically backfires and results in overeating and weight gain, focus on wellness. Eat whatever you want, but do it in a way that supports your health – including a healthy weight. Appreciate, taste, and enjoy your food so you feel good about the choices you make. Roth Family Chiropractic expands By Chris Edge

Roth Family Chiropractic, formerly known as Kensington Naturopathic Medical Center, recently expanded at 355 New Britain Road. Starting in a small space within that practice, Dr. Justin Roth, owner and head chiropractor, has grown the business to take the entire space at that location. Licensed since 2008, Roth’s special focus is working with patients with multiple sclerosis and migraine headaches. He also provides care for neck, back and hip pain as well as sleep insomnia, high blood pressure and carpal tunnel. The state-of-the-art Roth Family Chiropractic office is described by patients as having a warm, family-oriented ambiance. According to one patient, “Dr. Roth doesn’t merely treat you, he takes the time to educate you so that you understand your treatment and so that you can advocate for yourself.”

While in Roth was still in college, his father, a practicing dentist, complained of neck pain and numbness and tingling in his hand. As no medical professionals were able to help him to alleviate the pain, he decided to see a chiropractor, though skeptical of what it could do to help him. After a small number of visits and targeted adjustments, he was pain free and back to practicing dentistry. Seeing his father’s recovery from chiropractic care led Roth to move in that direction. After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science in marketing, he attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa where he received a doctorate of chiropractic. Following his doctorate degree, he completed two more years of schooling specializing in upper cervical specific care. Upper cervical care is a rapidly-growing form of chiropractic that focuses on the

One of Roth’s passions is providing upper cervical specific healthcare to people around the world through health mission trips. He has traveled to many countries including Brazil, Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. He is a member of the International Chiropractic Association and the Connecticut Chiropractic Council and also is part of a group of doctors called the Wellness Champions. Through this organization, Roth speaks at schools, medical facilities, corporations and small businesses on topics such as stress, women’s health, how to live a youthful lifestyle, and alternative solutions to arthritis pain.
