A time for reflection
By Hannah Jackson Special to The Citizen
On May 3 the Town Council approved the mill rate increase of .85 for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The taxpayers of Berlin voted for a .97 increase during the April 26 budget referendum. Why the difference? What does this mean for you? What is the mill rate, anyway? The mill rate is a property tax cal-

Ride-along: On patrol with the Berlin police By Daniel Jackson Special to The Citizen (The Berlin Police Department is currently running a Citizens Police Academy, a program to give residents insight into police operations. The department has run these several times and the current class is full. This second installment of The Citizen’s ride-along stories, as well as the citizens’ police academy, are part of police efforts to enhance communication with the community.) BHS principal moving on after one ‘eventful year’ By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen After just one academic year on the job, Berlin High School Principal Matthew Harnett is moving on. Harnnett informed BHS students May 3 of his decision. In a message posted on the high school website, Harnett wrote: “Thank you to all of you for your support and time in helping me at the high school. I have enjoyed my time here in Berlin immensely and am very grateful that I was given this opportunity to work with this community. I wish you all good luck in the coming school year.” Harnett’s next job will be as principal of Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, which is much closer to his home in Torrington than is Berlin.
Berlin’s Superintendent of School’s David Erwin and Board of Education President Gary Brochu were aware that Harnett had interviewed for the Valley Regional job. “We cerHarnett tainly wish Matt well. We are grateful to his commitment to the high school while he was here,” said Brochu, speaking on behalf of the board. Brochu believes Harnett’s tenure at BHS was a successful one. “This was a very eventful year for the high school,” the Board of Education president said, pointing out the school building project which passed in a refer-

(Today’s story is the first of several features about reading The Citizen plans to run over the summer months. If you have a special summer reading photo or story send it to news@theberlincitizen.com.) Henry is an Australian shepard and he helps kids read, not by helping them sound out words, but by being a patient, supportive listener. Henry works with his owner Janet Lamontagne, who has been the reading consultant at McGee Middle School for four years. Henry, just a year and a half old, has been coming to class with Lamontagne during the last year. “He comes to school with me every day and ‘listens’ to students read. He is quite a celebrity here,” Lamontagne said. Henry recently visited with first grade students at Willard Elementary School. Lamontagne said she first brought Henry to school
Henry. Lamontagne said her approach is similar to the Paws to Read programs some schools and libraries use. Paws to Read explains that dogs do not judge or tease, they just listen. Lamontagne said students understand that if they do not stay on task with their work that Henry will not return. Now Lamontagne plans to offer private summer “read with Henry” groups for local students. The three-week program will help students with their summer reading requirements by reading one book for each of the weeks. (The program has no affiliation with the school district.) The small group setting of about six students will give students a boost to their skills, Lamontagne said. A

ly, police officers patrolling Berlin can face anything at any time. Soneson jokes with the four officers for a few minutes then hands out yellow Tasers. I rode with Berlin’s police officers during a recent patrol. Instead of finding myself in an episode of “CSI,” I
experienced the reality of police work: documentation and report writing followed by moments of pure adrenaline. At 3 p.m., Officer Shawn Solek, the officer I’m paired with, starts his police cruiser and drives to Edgewood Road to finish documenting a burglary discovered there the day before. A person kicked in the door of a home but left much of the house intact.

Berlin police investigated yesterday, but Solek still needs to photograph the damage. He meets the homeowner’s carpenter and the homeowner’s cousin. As Solek snaps photos of the door, the cousin comments on the burglary. “God, it’s like they came in here, polished the furniture and left.” Next, Solek drives to the center of town and parks in an empty parking lot on Farmington Avenue to type the burglary report on the cruiser’s computer. He turns on 1410 AM sports talk while he writes. The police radio is quiet when Solek finishes his report at 5 p.m. so he sets up a speed trap. “Motor vehicle enforcement is what we do when we don’t have any calls,” he said. The speed limit on the road is 45 miles per hour. “I usually look for people going over 60,” he said. The radar beeps, sputters and whines to account for each cars. The faster the car is going, the higher the whine. When a motorist sees the police See Police, page 7

The musical “John & Jen” ended its five-week run at Connecticut Cabaret Theatre in Berlin this past weekend. The musical takes a look at the complex relationships between sisters and brothers and parents and children, set against the backdrop of a changing America between 1950 and 1990. Pictured: “Jen” and “John” — Anne Robichaud Collin and Matthew Collin Marrero — perform April 30 before a packed house in Berlin. The actors received a rousing standing ovation at the conclusion of the show. The writer of the musical, Tom Greenwald, was on-hand for the performance.

Are you a senior citizen looking for a fun activity where you can also make new friends? Check out the ceramics class held Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Senior Center. There is a core group of about 11 participants and many of them have done ceramics for years. Instructor Cathy Baram has led the group for more than 20 years. She said the class has many different skill levels and beginners are welcome. Class runs all year, and grandchildren often participate during summer and school vacations. The clay and paints used are non-toxic and made in the United States. Many of the items made are given as “gifts that are memories handed down to friends and families”. Some of the pieces currently underway are vases, figurines, birdhouses, garden stones and birdbaths. Ginny Steele has been coming for seven years. Her
13-year old grandson, Jim Steele, sometimes accompanies his grandmother and was working on a stepping stone for her garden. Ginny Steele was in the process of dry-brushing the pedestal portion of a birdbath. “The kids enjoy coming and Cathy helps them out,” she said. “Other people bring their grandkids too and they are well-behaved”. Steele’s long-term project is to finish a Nativity set for each of her six grandchildren, four are completed. Betty Moore has been coming to the class for about 10

However, Berlin was informed that it would receive zero funds for the grant. The state budget was changed, once again, and the governor’s office budgeted $260,000 to the town. Jim Wren, finance director, explains, “What that means is that $260,000 that originally had to come from

Music lover Leah Rozanski, a fifth grade student at Hubbard Elementary School displays the trophy and award certificate she received for her winning essay “What Music Means To Me”. The essay contest was sponsored by the New Britain Symphony in conjunction with its Young People’s Concert performance in April. Each year, fifth grade students from Berlin, New Britain and Plainville attend a performance by the New Britain Symphony. The annual performance provides students an opportunity to hear classical music. taxes now comes from the state grant instead. So what the council voted on was to put that $260,000 in additional grant funds back into the budget, which lowered the mill rate increase needed from .97 to .85. Then the council set the new mill rate effective July 1 at 24.50,” which is the current mill rate of 23.65 plus .85. Wren added: “Because the current state budget proposal relies on receiving substantial state union conces-
sions it is possible that, if those concessions are not received, the state may again reduce this funding. So we put $435,000 of the $646,000 back in. At the same time, the original budget included $175,000 in revenue from an increase in the conveyance tax on real estate, which the state took out of the budget. So we took out the $175,000, as we will no longer receive that. So, in summary, we added back $435,000 for the Manufacturers Machinery
and Equipment grant and took out $175,000 for the conveyance tax, for a net increase of $260,000.” The .85 mill rate increase, opposed to the .97 mill rate increase, will ultimately change the tax rates. Residents will now pay less in taxes than was proposed in the original budget approved April 26. “This is great news,” said Mayor Adam Salina. “However, the numbers are always changing.”

He pushes the cruiser in gear, hits the lights and surges after the car. It’s a short chase, just long enough for the silver PT Cruiser to drift to the side of the highway. The driver says he was visiting his sister who is in Hartford Hospital. Being upset, he forgot how fast he was driving. Solek decides to write a warning. At 6:30 p.m. I switch and ride with Officer Mike Silverio. Our first response is to a disabled vehicle in a busy intersection. As the tow truck is taking awhile, Silverio stays. “They’ve got little kids
in the car, so I don’t want to leave them.” Afterwards, Silverio drives around the portion of town he’s patrolling. The cruiser is new —bought only a few months before. It already has 20,000 miles on it. The radio crackles. It’s assault — across town. We are the only available cruiser and also the furthest away. With the lights and sirens on, Silvero pushes 75 mph up the Chamberlain Highway, the

We’re fighting gynecological cancers with robotics The Hospital of Central Connecticut is using advanced robotic surgery to evaluate and treat cancers of the female reproductive system, including uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers. Our highly experienced surgeons are also using robotics to treat non-cancerous gynecologic conditions. The robot’s tiny little tools allow our surgeons to make the smallest possible incisions, and to more easily access difficult-to-reach areas. Patients may recover faster, have fewer side effects, and experience less pain and scarring. For more information, visit www.thocc.org/robotics. For a physician referral, call 800-321-6244.

Brochu indicated that the process of finding Harnett’s
replacement will not be rushed, and that an interim principal may be brought in to “bridge the gap between Harnett’s departure and his successor’s first day on the job. “I know the board will be committed to doing a thorough search, getting various individuals involved in that process, and insistent that we get a principal who is capable of leading Berlin High School to where it needs to go, Brochu said.

St. Paul Rosary Makers break 1 million mark By Patricia LeVette and Robin Veronesi Special to The Citizen
1185120
The St. Paul Church Rosary Makers have strung more than 1 million rosaries since the ministry began in 1989. Approximately 120 of the prayer beads are given each May to boys and girls who make their First Communion. The black or white First Communion rosaries come in zippered pouches along with rosary instruction cards donated by the Knights of Columbus. Thank you cards from past years show how much the third graders appreciate the gift: “Thank you for the rosary. I will pray for you,”

Joseph R. Horanzy, 86, of New Britain, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on May 2, 2011. He was born on Nov. 30, 1924, in West Natrona, Pa., then moved to New Britain with his family where he attended local schools. He was the son of the late John and Helen (Ciborowski) Horanzy. He served in the 15th Air Force, 461st bomb group, based in Torretta, Italy during World War II. While in route to a bombing mission of Linz Austria his plane was shot down. Joe, a ball turret gunner, was classified as ‘missing in action’ having parachuted into Croatia. Out of the 10 crew members, Joe was one of four who was able to escape and evade capture for several weeks before returning safely to his base. Please visit www.ccsu.edu/ page.cfm?p=1015 to view his World War II documents and video prepared through the CCSU Veterans History Project and is recorded in the Library of Congress. After the war and returning to New Britain, Joe continued his education and obtained his Master’s Degree in education from Central Connecticut State University, and his 6th year certificate
School where he spent the majority of his years until his retirement in 1986. The school’s auditorium in named in his honor. He was a member of St. Maurice Church in New Britain for over 45 years. Joe will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 60 years, Irene (Dombkowski); his two loving daughters and their spouses Karen Hayes and husband Thomas of Berlin and Diane Brylle and husband Kenneth of Plainville; and his two sons and their spouses Joseph Horanzy and wife Sandy and Thomas Horanzy and wife Karen, both of Southington. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. Joe’s greatest joy was his closeness with his grandchildren, Trevor and Alyssa Hayes, Douglas and Matthew Brylle and Corrine and Mark Horanzy. Services were held May 7, 2011 at New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, New Britain followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maurice Church. Thanks from BHS Friends of Baseball
To the editor: On behalf of the BHS Friends of Baseball Booster Club, we would like to thank all the sponsors, donors and volunteers for their support of our 6th annual benefit golf tournament held May 1 at Timberlin Golf Course. It was a great day and enjoyed by all of our contestants. We would also like to thank the golf pro at Timberlin, Marc Bayram and his great staff and volunteers. They did an outstanding job in making the day a memorable one for all. A special thanks to Remzi and his staff for a great job with the conces-
sions and service they provided. With the help of our sponsors and participants we have been able to raise substantial funds to help provide additional equipment and programs for the successful baseball program headed by Coach Veleas. On behalf of the players, coaches and parents, we appreciate all the support shown and are extremely thankful to our generous Berlin community. The players would like to see you at an upcoming game at Sage Park to cheer them on in their quest to capture another state championship for Berlin. Friends of Baseball Berlin High School members
Clean it up To the editor: A while back when the campaign was on to renovate the high school, at a Town Council meeting, a number of well spoken students pa-
raded to the podium to speak in favor of the renovation and why not? Who better would know the condition of the high school than the students that attend it? But one thing that several of them said had nothing to do with the renovation. They said the lavatories were dirty. I repeat, dirty. So dirty that they said they were ashamed and embarrassed to show them to the students from other schools when they came to Berlin High School for different events. Of course, there is no excuse for this and there are only two reasons why this is happening. 1. There is not enough money in the Board of Education 38 million dollar budget to hire custodians or; 2. The custodians that we do have are not properly doing their job. Which is it, Mr. Brochu? You can write an op-ed as you sometimes do and explain it to the town or you can call me. I’m in the book and I will accept your call.

Customer ‘care’ center at CL&P needs a candy dish By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen Recently I needed some help with an electric bill problem and had to call CL&P a few times. Maybe you’ve had a similar ordeal. After punching in my account information, the voice said the wait would be 20 minutes (first time), 30 minutes (second time) and 40 minutes (third time). Maybe they have caller ID and I was being punished. OK, by the third time, I knew the drill. Put the phone on speaker, make a sandwich, do the dishes, fold the laundry, feed the cat…40 minutes is a long time. Take a nap, do some email, give myself a pedicure. Meanwhile, the power company’s recorded message is cheerfully educating me

with helpful hints about how to reduce my energy use. A 40 minute wait time is too darn long. So is 20 or 30. My doctor does better than that. The power company makes enough money to afford a couple of extra customer representatives instead of wasting my precious time. CL&P is up there on the hill, with its checkerboard lawn, and I’m way down here in my hovel replacing light bulbs with those ugly squiggly things, trying to do my part, trying to save the power company the expense and inconvenience of building a bigger grid. I pay these guys a bundle each year and hardly ever ask for anything. Is it too much to expect not to wait a half hour to talk about my bill? Berlin folks might be interested to know that CL&P offers a Customer Care Center at its Northeast Utilities campus on Seldon Street. It opened in September 2007. There are only two customer care centers in Connecticut and you’re lucky enough to live in a town that offers one (the other is in Hartford.) I decided to give it a try. My problem was complicated. Maybe a face-to-face meeting would make it easier to explain. Here’s what happened. I get to the door for the Customer Care Center which leads to a desk with two guards; one barks my arrival into an intercom. “Customer.” See CL&P, next page

Leatherman controversy brews over DNA test
peace, but she also sees that a DNA study “would let us find out more and give us so much information.” The Berlin Historical Society had not taken a stand on the discussion. The Ossining Historical Society, in Ossining, N.Y., has jurisdiction over the matter of the Leatherman’s grave. The issue is expected to be decided soon. There is the possibility of: not moving the grave; moving the grave and not testing the remains; or
moving the grave and testing the remains. Stub and Caliandri said there is a great deal of curiosity about the Leatherman and his origins. DNA could help uncover his nationality and also if he suffered from any disorders. Stub said at one time people believed the Leatherman was from Lyon, France and that his name was Jules Bourglay. That’s the inscription on his gravestone. However, Stub said that story has since been debunked as Bourglay was a character in fiction well before the Leatherman’s time. The Leatherman is buried in Sparta Cemetary in Scarborough, N.Y. near Route 9, and in a high traffic area of the cemetary. Since his grave attracts a lot of visitors, concerns have come up about protecting the site. Born in 1858, the Leatherman was found dead in a hovel, in March 1889, near Scarborough. Ray Bendici, on his blog “Damned Connecticut,” offers extensive background and discussion on the matter. It links to another website, Leavetheleathermanalone.com.

When the center opened, the CL&P president said it was important for customers to be able to speak with a representative faceto-face. So take advantage of your local Customer Care Center, it beats waiting on the phone and the view from the hill is pretty. Maybe if enough folks from Berlin walk-in, CL&P will put out a welcome mat and a bowl of mints. In the meantime, a few more phone lines and a lot less wait time would really show they cared.

Sides have been formed on a controversy centered around a wanderer called the Leatherman. The vagabond traveled throughout Connecticut, including Berlin, and also the New York region. Some claim his grave is in danger and his remains should be moved. Some ask, if that happens why not test his DNA? But there is strong opposition to delving into the Leatherman’s genetic material and the rallying call is “Leave the Leatherman alone”. This side contends that would be an invasion of privacy for a man who spent most of his life trying to obscure his identity. Lorraine Stub, secretary of the Berlin Historical Society, said recent news stories and other documents regarding this new chapter in the leatherman’s legacy are available at the historical society. Sally Caliandri, also of the Berlin Historical Society, said the discussion is “interesting.” She understands those who feel the Leatherman should be left to rest in

non-profit organization founded in 1949 by Br. Sylvan Mattingly, C.F.X. “Brother had a burning desire to do something special for Mary, the Mother of God,” as reported in Our Lady’s Messenger, the bi-monthly newsletter for the organization. “He was a humble, holy man who shared his talent of rosary making with others.” Over 17,000 members, in all
50 states and many foreign countries, make and distribute roughly seven million cord and chain rosaries annually for the missions, according to the group’s website www.olrm.org “It’s very therapeutic,” Fecteau said. She and Terry Jambard are the only two original members. Some of the 40 members meet biweekly for conversation, coffee and a common calling. Others create the prayer beads at home while watching television.

his Confirmation service hours. The many colored beads are obtained from a Cheshire woman who continues her father’s bead supply ministry. Fecteau’s son Tom delivers beads to members who make the rosaries at home and to area facilities for distribution. The Rosary Makers also create Continental Rosaries for a children’s program developed by the Archdiocese of Hartford. Each of the five decades is a different color (red, yellow, blue, green and white) representing the five continents. In addition to parishioners and Archdiocesan programs, other recipients include: local health care facilities such as Ledgecrest, prisons, hospitals, nurses working in hospice and military service men and women. “The years fly by. We’ve met some wonderful people,” Fecteau said. The annual Rosary Makers’ picnic in June is an opportunity to do just that. “It’s a time for people to come together and see that they’re part of a much larger family.” The Rosary Makers gather every other Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. in the St. Paul Church Hall for a few hours. New members are always welcome. For information on membership or obtaining rosaries, call Phyllis Fecteau at (860) 828-4934.

them. “I go out to lunch with a couple of the ladies every Wednesday after class, and we shop sometimes”, she said. However, on this day, it was lunch at the Senior Center because there was a special lunch for volunteers. Steele said when she started attending the class, a couple of the women there became her friends, so she loves to continue the tradition with others. If meeting these charming ladies isn’t enough to get you to class, consider these facts. Brushes and paints are supplied, though members pay for their pieces. Some have their own brushes so they can work on things at home. They contribute pieces for the center’s spring raffle. A couple of the grandchildren have entered pieces in the Berlin Fair and won first place. The whole group goes out a couple of times a year, and Senior Center director Tina Doyle hosts a party at the end of the summer for the grandchildren. If you are a senior gentleman, the odds are definitely in your favor. There are currently no men taking the class, but Betty Moore is sure that if one man joins, more will follow. So head on over to the Senior Center and sign up for fun and friendship.

Coats’ Notes
It was quite a week for the Berlin High School girls tennis team. The Lady Redcoats won all four of their matches during the stretch. Berlin’s fourth win was a 5-2 decision over RHAM. Winning for the Lady Redcoats that afternoon was Eva Rybka and April Regan, and the doubles teams of Kristen Cavaliere and Kelly Josephson, Kelly Byrnes and Sam Cooper, and Megan Pitkin and Emma Johnson. One of Berlin’s victims last week was Plainville. Lady Blue Devil coach Chuck Radda was impressed with the Lady Redcoats, who beat his team, 7-0. “I thought they were as strong top to bottom as any team we’ve played,” Radda said. The good times continued
for Berlin this week. The Lady Redcoats downed Bristol Central, 6-1, Monday to improve to 8-1. Alex Chyra and the team of Adam Salwocki and Mike Voelpel were victorious, but Berlin High School was unable to scratch out any other wins against RHAM last week in boys tennis. The Redcoats soon got back to their winning ways, however. Berlin downed Bristol Central, 5-2, Monday to improve to 4-4. Chyra and Dan Rombola prevailed in singles play. The Redcoats’ Salwocki and Voelpel, David Balfore and Kevin Stritch, and Ethan Cope and Jaydip Patel swept in doubles action.

Berlin improves to 11-2 with extra-innings win By Jim Bransfield Special to The Citizen Everything is normal in the world of Berlin High baseball. The Redcoats were a gaudy 11-2 going into Tuesday’s game with Middletown, their ace pitcher Austin Barnes was 6-0 with an earned-run average

you couldn’t see with microscope, and coach Leo Veleas was not satisfied. Normal season. The Redcoats won a beauty on Monday, too. They trailed Central Connecticut Conference South Division foe Maloney of Meriden 4-0 on the road in the sixth inning. Berlin scored what looked to be a meaningless run in the sixth, then struck for three in the seventh to tie, then scored three more in the ninth after two were out to win 7-4. Bobby Mozzicato’s RBI triple in the ninth broke the 4-4 tie, but that big hit wouldn’t have been possible without the seventh inning heroics. In that inning, Will Matuszak drove home a run, then Brendan Germano slammed a two-run single to tie. Barnes picked up the win with one and two-thirds innings of shutout relief. However — “We struggled today for six innings,” said Veleas, the master of finding a cloud attached to every silver lining. “They helped us out by making some errors, too. Are we playing real good baseball? Probably not.” He listed the reasons. “We missed signals. We had a situation in which a pitcher didn’t cover first and we dropped a fly ball,” said the coach. “The See Baseball, page 23
Softball coach expects good times to continue in second half By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen At midseason, the Berlin High School softball team owned a sparkling record of 8-2, and Coach Jason Pires was not surprised. “So far I think we have met the expectations we had for ourselves this season,” he said. “We have a lot of starters who were starters last year, so being a veteran team, I thought we would come out strong.” Pires indicated there are no attitude issues in his dugout. “This year we really have come together as a team,” he said. “Every single person on the team, regardless of position, has a unified goal and a desire to achieve it. It has been a pleasure to coach these girls this season, and I think that we are going to be a tough team to beat in the second half of the season.” Makayla Harris, Kelly Walsh and Monique St. Jarre have been the Lady Redcoats’
most pleasant surprises this spring. Harris, a freshman, starts at first base and has proven she belongs at the varsity level. “If she continues to work hard, she really can be a special player for this high school,” said Pires, whose team was 9-3 at press time. Walsh broke into the starting lineup for the first time this year. The junior helps man the outfield, a new spot for her. “Her focus and intensity has been a pleasant surprise,” said Pires. In a win over Plainville last week, Walsh went 3-for-3 at the plate, with two triples, and drove in three runs. A veteran pitcher, St. Jarre was expected to have a solid year on the mound, but few expected her to be as dominant as she has been. “I knew she would be a huge part of our team, but I am even surprised at how effective she has been, even with

Piotrowicz, Voelpel shine at invitational
Members of the Berlin High School girls track and field team competed in a pair of meets over the weekend: The Middletown Invitational and the Lindy Remigino Invitational. The BHS 4x800 relay team of Alex Carbonell, Stef Parillo, Catherine Voelpel and Kaylene Sylvain qualified for the talent-packed Remigino Invitational. The foursome had a qualifying time of 10:25, and clocked a 10:10 at the meet. “The girls have been work-
ing hard on their pace and on some of the technical aspects of the relay, like handoffs, during practice to maximize their potential,” Berlin coach Steve Soucy said. “When meet day came they were ready and went all out. They are slowly creeping up on the school record of 10:01. Each one of them ran really hard and paced themselves like we have been working on in training.” Voelpel and Carbonell also competed as individuals. Voelpel finished 10th in the

At the Middletown Invitational, Berlin’s 4x100 relay team of Madison Tavarozzi, Jess Lavoie, Emily Ditmar and Gina Lapila broke into the Top 10. The Lady Redcoat distance runners put up best times in their respective
races at the event: Sylvain (1,600, 5:52), Nicole Sylvain (1,600/3,200, 6:06/13:24) and Carly Cohen (1,600, 6:32). In the field, Berlin’s Briana Cass matched her season-best in high jump and long jump. — Nick Carroll

and D’Attilio. “These girls are both just sophomores, and to post scores like they did today, on a course they had never seen before, is really special.” The Lady Redcoats went on to defeat previously unbeaten Avon, 186-201, at Timberlin. Scheyd paced the victors with a 44. Next in line was Emily Stickel with a 46. She was followed by Deutsch (47), D’Attilio (49) and Erika Park (49). Berlin improved to 8-0 with a 184-203 decision over Conard Monday at Rockledge. Scheyd and Fagan tied for medalist honors with 45s. Deutsch carded a 46. Stickel had a 48. Led by match medalist Jeremy Desimone’s 38, the Berlin High School boys golf team fired a 162 and defeated Conard (172) and Hall (175) Monday at Timberlin. “I’m happy for Jeremy. It was the first time he’s medaled this season. He has played well in spurts, but overall, has been improving,” BHS coach John Line said. Kevin Jud shot a 39 for Berlin Monday. Teammate Connor Bowen had a 41. The two victories bumped the Redcoats’ record to 12-2. Bianca Jacques and Shan-
non Murphy each tallied three scores as the Berlin High School girls lacrosse team edged Newington, 8-7, last week. Cassidy Goodwin added two scores for the victors. Berlin goalie Nicole Damboise made 18 saves. The Lady Redcoats went on to defeat West Haven, 8-3, behind another three-goal performance by Jacques. Also scoring for Berlin were Kira Eleveld (2), Goodwin, Morgan Imossi and Jen Straub. Kelly Kennedy made five saves for the Lady Redcoats. Jimmy Nolan had a big day, matching his pole vault record and notching a personal best in long jump, and Shaun Sullivan won the long jump and triple jump, but overall, the Berlin High School boys track and field team was no match for Bristol Central last week. Rounding out the Berlin scoring slate were Emily Deutsch (44), Caroline D’Attilio (45) and Victoria Fagan (46). “Alyssa had a great round today on a very tough golf course. about.” Veleas said that five of his team’s games that are wins could easily have been losses. “It comes down to this: I’m not sure who’s going to get off the bus,” he said. “When we do the right things — when we pitch, when we catch the ball and when we don’t make mistakes — we’re pretty good. But when we don’t do those things, we struggle and when we play a quality team and play like that, we will probably lose. Those five games in which we struggled and won could easily have been losses. I want us to eliminate the mental mistakes.”
But those five might-havebeen losses were wins. The old adage that says teams with winning traditions find ways to win works in Berlin. Veleas has five state titles to his credit and just about every year the Redcoats field a solid team. So it is this season. The Redcoats, who play Bristol Central at Muzzy Field in Bristol Friday, have won 11 of 13 and are probably going to pull down a highranking in the state tournament. And the coach is finding and worrying about all kinds of problems. Nothing new in Berlin.

dropped ball was foul, but it extended the at bat, and the kid got a single and drove in a run. That stuff drives me nuts. However, we hung in there and came back and those are real positives.” Among the other Berlin positives is the play of Germano, Barnes and Matuszak. Shortstop Germano was hitting .390 going into the Maloney game and he had three more hits. Matuszak was hitting .356 before that game and he got a couple of hits and Barnes was hitting right around .300. Besides Barnes, who plays the outfield when he doesn’t pitch, and whose ERA was 1.32 before his Monday relief stint, there’s Matuszak, a center field when he’s not pitching, who is 2-0. “Those are the guys who have been sharing the load,” said Veleas. The Redcoats were coming off a dreadful 11-9 loss to East Catholic Saturday. “We got 14 hits that day and we still lost,” said Veleas. “It’s pitching and defense; that’s what wins and that’s what I’m all
