Winzler returns to serve as interim principal at BHS
Assistant Principal Jim Sachs leaves for Waterford By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen
Mark L. Winzler appears to be Berlin’s goto guy when it comes to filling in top spot school vacancies. Last week, Superintendent of Schools David Erwin announced that Winzler will be interim principal at Berlin High School over the summer. Erwin said more than 20 individuals had expressed interest in the principal position and he anticipated that the search process, which will include parents and oth- Winzler er administrators, will result in finding a replacement by the start of the

new school year. Previously, Winzler filled-in for several months when former Superintendent Michael Cicchetti left in December 2009, after four years in Berlin, to take a job as superintendent of the Easton, Redding, and Region 9 school districts. Winzler will take over at BHS beginning July 1, and also spend a few days in June with current Principal Mark Harnett, as part of the transition. Harnett will be done at BHS June 30. He resigned the post, after one year, See Winzler, page 7

Memorial dedication The Memorial Day parade was cancelled due to rain, but Berlin’s veterans have not been forgotten. On Flag Day, June 14, at 6:30 p.m., the new Veterans Memorial will be dedicated. Berlin Veterans Commission Chairman Tom Chesery said permission has been obtained to rename the road leading into the monument (from Farmington Avenue and Massirio Drive) as Veterans Way. Flags for the military branches, as well as the American flag, will be hoisted at the site for the first time. The town’s oldest veterans will do the honors. Many state and local officials will attend and the public is invited. Check www.berlincitizen. com for more information.
Many runners found they couldn’t keep up with Berlin High School’s Catherine Voelpel at the Central Connecticut Conference South Division championship meet. The sophomore earned all-conference honors in two events. See page 20 for more.

Civil War diary of a Berlin farmer: ‘War is terrible’ (The following excerpts from Henry Sage’s Civil War diary, along with commentary, were compiled by Cathy Nelson, assistant director of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. This spring, Nelson has presented several talks about Berlin’s role in the Civil War as part of commemorative activities surrounding the 150th anniversary of the start of the “War of Rebellion.”) Henry Sage was a Berlin
farmer, about age 36, married with three children and related to the local Sages who owned the land where Sage Park is now located; the exact kinship is not known. He served, during the Civil War, in the 25th Regiment, posted in Louisiana. Henry left a diary with entries from January to August 1863. From the diaries, it appears Henry did a lot of picket duty – perhaps

When Stanley Works closed and he was out of a job, he decided to turn his part-time passion into a full-time endeavor. “If I were here just for the money, I wouldn’t last long.” Both men say the school’s continuous curriculum is unique in its ability to accommodate busy work and school schedules. Students can attend any evening and take as long as they need to complete the hours. Most students complete the course in one-and-a-half months. The Little League organization plans to place four, 60 foot poles at Petit 1, the field to the left of the sports complex situated behind the Senior Center. The 16 lights cost $90,000 to buy and install and will be funded by the National Little League organization along with the help from corporate sponsors. Some neighbors to the ball field have expressed concern that the lights will cause games to extend later and be disruptive. The review was delayed as representatives of Musco Lighting, a corporate sponsor of the town’s Little League, that has agreed to supply the lights, was not able to attend May 26. The transcripts were created by Elizabeth Bennet, of East Berlin, who continues to help in local history room, and the late Ann Borthwick, for whom the history room is dedicated. While Henry’s diary is a local treasure, in those days everyone kept diaries and letters, and so there are many examples of individual’s written accounts of the Civil War.
Excerpts from the 1863 diary of Henry Sage Wednesday, Jan. 14: We are called out now at halfpast five o’clock and stand in trench one hour in readiness for the evening. It is not pleasant business nor is any part of the soldier’s life that I have seen or much of it. Many things are disagreeable. Saturday, Jan. 17: About 10 o’clock returned from
picket. Had hardtack and coffee for breakfast. Fired our rifles as we came in. Some very good shots and some very wild ones. As soon as we got in we were ordered to get ready for inspection. Noon and no inspection yet and no breakfast. Hunger demands attention but don’t always get it. After dinner I went to bed and slept a short time. Stand down and no inspection. Such is life in camp. Monday, Jan. 19: Quite rainy and muddy. No drilling. A very lonely day. Such days pass slow and time hangs heavy unless we write, wash or do something to take our thoughts from home and pleasant scenes. Sunday, Feb. 1: Another month has begun and soon may we do our duty to our God, our country, and ourselves. We had preaching today by Chaplain. Text proverbs 32, chapter 16. Had another inspection today. I went out with knapsack, riddle, and other fixings. I long for the day when these things shall be laid aside and I shall

be home in peace. Monday, Feb. 2: Our division is building a large bridge across the bayou of large logs cut and hauled from the woods just north of our encampment. A great many of our men are not fit for duty, guard or picket. It seems to be quite a bad muster for them at this time. Saturday. Feb. 7: On guard with Risley (Note: another Berlin soldier). Another mail I received two letters in from wife and one from Mary Atwater. All well. Oh, how much pleasure it gives a poor soldier to have good news. Saturday, Feb. 28: Our new bridge across bayou has been down for about two weeks. It is a strong substantial one. Saturday March 7: For breakfast grilled cakes, molasses, coffee cake. Cold beef for dinner. Beef, potatoes, cold rice, coffee, peach sauce, and bread. We have had cleaning up in kitchen today. Preparations they say – made ready to attack Port Hudson. Tuesday, March 10: 5 o’clock a.m. forward march is the order to go as skirmishes very bad getting through the woods and swamps. Monday, March 16: Yesterday about 3 p.m. ordered to forward march again and we marched back about five miles in an awful rain storm with thunder and lightning. When we halted I was wet through and through and put on guard through the night. It was a terrible storm and I set up all night by the side of a very large log. I slept well and dreamt of home and our dear friends. Boats were passing through the night and baggage wagons moving. War is terrible, but we have not seen the worst of it I fear.

He served for three years as dean of students at McGee and the past three years as assistant principal at BHS. “I enjoyed every second.” BHS has one other assistant principal, Janet Parlato. St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 68 Main St., East Berlin, will hold a Festival Service of Rededication, Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. The main sanctuary of the historic church has been undergoing a major renovation over the past year with nearly the entire interior rebuilt. The Right Reverand Laura Ahrens, Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, will help the congregation to celebrate and she will also preach the sermon. Invitations to the event have been sent to all Berlin churches and local officials. The public is welcome to attend. The service will be followed by a tea reception on the lawn.

The annual townwide Upbeat picnic took place under fair skies at Berlin High School May 26. As these photos show, a good crowd turned out for the event. Manning the hot dog costume is Michael Lisitano, collecting donations for UpBeat. On stage are Marc DelValle, a student at Central Connecticut State University and Tim Brzezinski, math teacher. Top chefs tend the hot dog grill.

Not impressed
To the editor: The endless nights of tossing and turning are over now that Mayor Salina and other courageous Democrats have taken a stand and announced their support for a career politician in the making,
Chris Murphy. Not only do I now know who to vote for, but hopefully a majority of Connecticut voters will be sagacious enough to do likewise so as to ensure that we have two tax-and-spend liberal senators in Washington fighting to rubber-stamp each and every Obama initiative. I cannot wait for these guys to announce — after much thought and soul-searching no doubt — whom they intend to support for President in 2012. Dennis F. McCarthy Kensington
What’s your story? Does your club, civic organization, charitable cause, youth group, or church have a story it would like to share with our readers? Did your organization host an event, have an adventure, travel, do a good deed, celebrate a milestone? Here’s a chance to turn the spotlight on what’s going on in your corner of Berlin. All you have to do is tell us about your group’s activities, in 500 words or less, and send it along with a photo to news@theberlincitizen.com.
Dear editor — what comes next? “I want to write a Letter to the Editor, how do I do that?” That’s a question we often hear from readers, so here’s The Citizen’s letter policy — the expanded version. These quidelines are used by our parent company, The Record-Journal, and we attempt to adhere to these as closely as possible. A few of these policies have been revised, so make note! We encourage letter-writers to submit letters on topics of general interest to our readership. Published letters appear in the opinions section of the editorial pages. We allow one letter per writer per calendar month (the date of publication determines the month, not the date on the letter document or when it was received by us). Letters must not exceed 300 words. During a political season or a referendum vote, letters will be limited to 100 words. This lets us include as many opinions as possible. Sept. 1 generally begins what we consider the “political season”. We will also announce, well in advance, when the cut-off is for political letters (this includes elections of individuals as well as referendum items.) The cut-off allows one edition before the vote, without related letters. Writers must include their complete name (not “J. Doe”) and an address and day-

‘Hunger is for the Birds!’
New principal named at St. Paul School St. Paul School has named a new principal. The announcement was made May 23, that Laurie M. Piecewicz, will take over July 1. She replaces Robert Biancamano who came in as principal in July of 2007. Father Robert and the Principal Search Committee made the announcement. A welcome reception for Piecewicz is scheduled for Sunday, June 5, at 6 p.m. in the church hall. Piecewicz lives in Wethersfield with her husband and two sons. She received a bachelor of arts in English and secondary education from Saint Joseph College and a master of arts in American studies from Wesleyan University. She also holds teacher and administrative certifications in Connecticut, having completed further coursework in educational leadership at Sacred Heart University. Since 1994, Piecewicz has held teaching and administrative positions in Connecticut school districts. She is presently employed as a reading and language arts teacher leader at Sage Park Middle School in Windsor where she also serves as the facilitator of school improvement and professional development. She also has served as a faith formation teacher for both elementary and middle school classes at the Church of the Incarnation in Wethersfield.
Celebrating 15 Years Of Local History Friends of the Friendship Center auxiliary members have planted a smorgasbord of herbs and spices from which kitchen director and staff of the community kitchen can pick and choose. The kitchen herb garden is part of the auxiliary’s new “Hunger is for the Birds!” project which they kicked off earlier this month with a $1,000 donation to the Friendship Service Center’s walk team in the Foodshare’s Walk Against Hunger. Pictured, auxiliary members Betty Carlson, left, and Evelyn Anderson, both of Berlin, point out the various plants in the new herb garden to Gerry Waldo, kitchen director.
From The Citizen archives: The first week of June June 4, 1997 It’s like a member of the family died — The tears started flowing before the last day had even officially begun. Employees at MidConn Bank greeted each other with hugs and tears as they prepared for their last day of work under the MidConn banner. After months of preparation, Eagle Bank has acquired the 124 year-old MidConn Bank on Main Street. Local wrestlers prepare for trip to national tourney in Fargo N.D. — “This is the largest wrestling tournament in the world,” said Jim Day, Berlin High School wrestling coach.

June 6, 2001 The name game: Mattabesset or Sebethe? — The town of Berlin is committed to cleaning up the Mattabesset River Watershed; now it needs to clean up some confusion about the name of the town’s river. “I think we have to take action at some point to determine what the official name of the river is,” said Mayor Thomas Veronesi. Park won’t be named after Doc McIntosh — The name of Dr. John P. McIntosh will no longer be attached to Volunteer Park and no one is more pleased than Dr. John P. McIntosh.
June 4, 2003 Resources ‘pooled’: Lions pool to become community center — The town has apparently found a permanent home for a community center. CCC track: BHS girls third, boys seventh By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
Powered by five all-conference-worthy performances, the Berlin High School girls track and field team generated 107 points and finished a strong third at the Central Connecticut Conference

Berlin High School’s Kate Piotrowicz finished second in discus at the CCC South meet. Her throw of 102-feet 3-inches was a career-best, and just two inches shy of the school record.
The Berlin High School baseball team (16-4) earned the No. 3 seed in the CIAC Class L state tournament
South Division championship meet, held last week at Platt-Meriden. Earning all-conference recognition were the Lady Redcoats’ Alex Carbonell (800), Catherine Voelpel (200, 400), Kate Piotrowicz (discus) and Dawn Grabowski (pole vault). “Overall, a great day,” BHS coach Steve Soucy said. “We didn’t really go after team points and chose to only run the kids in their main events, as if we were at the state meet. A few weeks ago we said that once we lowered the kids’ workload during training, their times would significantly come down. That certainly did prove to be the case with a few kids coming really close to setting school records.” Only a sophomore, Voelpel bested the CCC South field in the 400 with a time of 58.14. That’s just four-one-hundredths of a second off the school record. Voelpel nearly set a school mark in the 200 as well, where she finished second. Also, Voelpel played a part in two successful relay performances at the CCC South meet. She helped both the 4x400 and 4x800 teams to runnerup finishes. Joining Voelpel in both relays was Carbonell, Kaylene Sylvain and Stef Parillo. Carbonell was second in the 800. In the field, Piotrowicz threw a career best 102-3 in discus and placed second. That mark is two inches shy of the school record. Grabowski was second in pole vault and sixth in javelin. In other action, Berlin’s Jacqueline Carlson finished third in javelin, Carla Mangiafico was third in high jump, and Nicole Johnson qualified for the state meet in discus. See Track, next page

Coats’ Notes and was slated to face the winner of Platt-Darien Tuesday. Berlin High School garnered the No. 9 seed in the CIAC Class L softball state tournament. The Lady Redcoats (15-5) had a first-round date with No. 24 Bristol Eastern Tuesday. In girls tennis, Berlin High School (13-1) was scheduled to take on Bacon Academy in the opening round of the CIAC Class M state tournament Tuesday.
For tournament updates, check out The Citizen website and Facebook page. Medalist Jeremy Desimone had three birdies and finished with a 35 to lead the Berlin High School boys golf team past Granby, 149164, and Cromwell, 149-183, at the Tournament Players Club at River Highlands last week. Rounding out Berlin’s scoring slate was Kevin Jud (36), Connor Bowen (39) and Pat Bostrom (39).
The Redcoats went on to put up a 150 at Wethersfield Country Club as they bested Glastonbury (154), Wethers-
field (162) and Manchester (194).

west Catholic at Timberlin last week. Despite windy conditions, Berlin’s Alyssa Scheyd managed to card a match-best 41 that afternoon. Scheyd was supported by Victoria Fagan (43), Emily Stickel (43) and Emily Deutsch (49). The Lady Redcoats have put up a score below 180 eight times this spring. “Truly a remarkable accomplishment by these girls,” said BHS coach Jim Barnes. “These scores really speak
to the balance we have on our team. It’s not just one or two girls. Everyone is contributing.” On Friday, Berlin bumped its record to 14-0 with a 177242 victory over Hall at Timberlin.
