Assistant principal leaves Willard Elementary School

Day to honor our troops

Berlin held its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony May 27, to honor all those who have served, fought and sacrificed their lives for our country, and those who continue to serve. Residents, veterans, service men and women and parade goers lined the streets of the parade route. Families and children dressed in red, white and blue and waving American Flags cheered as the parade marched onward to Veterans Park. Sen. Richard Blumenthal was the keynote speaker at the post-parade ceremony in Veterans Memorial Park. See more photos on page 11.

Rockin’ 4 The Troops entertains parade goers By Maura Gaffney Special to The Citizen Playing loud rockin’ music before 9 a.m. has become a Memorial Day tradition for Tom Deschenes. His home is located along the parade route on Farmington Avenue, and every year before the parade begins, he turns up the volume for spectators to enjoy. Deschenes will be entertaining patriotic Americans next weekend as well, but on a much bigger scale. The local musician will be playing live with his band at “Rockin’ 4 The Troops.” Deschenes lives near the Subway restaurant on Farmington Avenue, and he’s been the unofficial early morning disc jockey for that section of road ever since Farmington Avenue was designated as the new parade route several years ago. Many parade goers have made it a tradition to park their chairs nearby, so they can listen to

the lively music as they wait for marchers. Deschenes turns off the speakers at 9 a.m. so spectators can enjoy the parade, but next weekend the music will last all afternoon and into the night to support the troops. Rockin’ 4 The Troops is a charity started by Tom and Laura Deschenes that sends care packages to U.S. servicemen and women overseas. The charity is supported primarily by a Rockin’ 4 The Troops concert put on by dozens of area musicians each June. Admission to the live show is an item that can be sent to those who are serving in harm’s way. Approved items include everything from toothpaste to trail mix. Donations to help pay shipping costs are accepted as well. “We just want to send some of the comforts of home to our troops,” Deschenes said. See Rockin’, page 35

The Berlin public schools system is currently searching for a new assistant principal for Willard Elementary School. “We have lots of applicants, over 150 to be exact, and we’re in the hunt right now and hope to have somebody named well before our next school year, hopefully by July 1,” Willard Principal Salvatore Urso said. Assistant Principal Lauren Feltz has given her letter of resignation to the Board of Education. She is leaving the Berlin public schools at the end of this school year to start her new position as principal of Middlebury Elementary School in Middlebury, beginning July 1. Feltz was assistant principal at Willard for three years. Before working for the Berlin public schools, she was a teacher for 13 years in Wilton. “I think the Berlin school system is an excellent school district,” Feltz said. “I think the community is extremely education oriented and the parents are a great support to the school. I think Berlin is a district that believes and acts on the belief that they want to do right by every student. I think they have a lot of respect for their students and a lot of respect for the importance of the educational process for each child and I learned a lot and I have really valued my time as being part of the team.” Feltz said she will miss the “incredibly dedicated staff,” of Willard school the most.

“They are tremendously hard working and they’re highly collaborative and I can only hope that my new staff will be of the same,” Feltz said. “They really are stellar folks.” Principal Salvatore Urso said staff and administrators congratulate Feltz on her new position and that “it’s certainly a step up from her assistant principal job here at Willard.” “We certainly wish Ms. Feltz well and she has made great contributions to Willard school. In the years that she has been here, she certainly contributed to the school in many ways,” Urso said. “She has a strong vision for excellent instruction, how to promote and sustain a climate for children in which that helps them best learn in. She has provided support for staff and technology applications.” Brian Benigni, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said a hiring committee, made up of two parents and eight district administrators and teachers, will begin interviewing applicants this week. “We are looking for an educational leader that possesses a strong structural

of that. Actions speak very loud and in this case, voting for the bill and rebuffing his contribution was exactly what my constituents and my conscious would expect me to do. Fortunately, you have people who think they can influence the (legislative) process either by actions or words. I think this one showed that in the end I did the right thing by voting to close this loop hole, but more importantly it passed the entire General Assembly and the bill was adopted. During the trial, jury and the public heard testimony that you allegedly said “Killing bills is easier than passing them,” during a fundraiser event in 2011 to a group of rollyour-own tobacco shop owners. Was that statement taken out of context during the trial and in media reports?

During trial, jury heard testimony from an FBI informant, Democratic Party insider Harry Raymond Soucy, of conversations and text messages he had with Aresimowicz about a bill

Now that the trial is over, Aresimowicz sat down with The Berlin Citizen to tell his side of the story. (See next page for story on the high-profile case) What was your initial reaction to seeing your name on the witness list for the Braddock trial? I think any time your name is mentioned in anything like that, there’s a certain amount of anxiety and embarrassment. But when the story came out it was very clear that I did absolutely as I should with not being involved with the scandal and doing the opposite, which is voting for the bill (in April) and saying no to any attempt to try and offer me anything of monetary value. In the end I was proud

public silence. “I stand here to confirm what I told you a year ago,” Donovan said. “My vote was never for sale and I was not involved in Ray Soucy’s conduit contribution scheme. That doesn’t mean I didn’t talk to Ray Soucy; I never denied that I did. ... I knew they were concerned about their small businesses and I care about small business. But there was no quid pro quo.” Donovan said what happened to him is a cautionary tale that all politicians should heed. “Somebody you know shakes your hand, talks about something at a fundraiser and plots to take you down,” Donovan said. “It can happen anywhere — it can happen to anyone.” FBI agents and staff mem-

ernment attorney Eric Glover told the jury. “At the very least Mr. Braddock didn’t want to know. You have to decide what he knew, or what he decided not to know about.” The government focused particularly on conversations Braddock had with Soucy. In one example, Soucy described the difficulties his friends had getting the “drunks, drug addicts, and losers” to write checks even when the men put the money in their hands. “Ah God,” Braddock said, laughing. “Hey it works.” Political experts said the scandal severely damaged Donovan’s chances of winning the 5th Congressional District seat. Donovan, the endorsed candidate, lost a three-way Democratic primary amid the scandal. His lawyer attended court daily throughout the trial. As the case was handed to the jury Tuesday afternoon, Donovan briefly addressed the media after a year of near

NEW HAVEN — A federal jury took less than three hours to find Robert Braddock Jr. guilty on charges of conspiracy, using false donors to write campaign checks and falsifying reports to the federal government. The 12-member panel convicted Braddock of helping the owners of roll-your-own cigarette shops hide the source of contributions to the congressional campaign of former House Speaker Christopher Donovan. The retailers hoped Donovan, a Meriden Democrat, could use his influence to kill legislation that would have harmed the roll-your-own business. U.S. District Court Judge Janet Bond Arterton scheduled sentencing for Aug. 13. Braddock, Donovan’s campaign finance director, faces a statutory maximum sentence of 12 years in prison. Braddock, 34, showed little emotion but held his chin in his hand as the jury foreman read the verdict, then quietly left the courtroom with his lawyer. Spanning over six days of trial, federal prosecutors played secretly recorded video and audio for the jury and presented witnesses who had made deals with the government to reduce their own sentences. Jurors also saw and heard recordings of Donovan and other politicians, including House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero, R-Norwalk, and

House Majority Leader Joseph Aresimowicz, DBerlin. The recordings were part of an FBI sting using an informant that targeted lawmakers, including Donovan, for illegal campaign contributions. Donovan and the other lawmakers were not indicted in the sting. But six other men, including Donovan campaign manager Joshua Nassi, were arrested and pleaded guilty. Braddock was the only one to go to trial. “There were days of this trial when I thought that Chris Donovan was sitting next to me, rather than Mr. Braddock,” said Braddock’s attorney, Frank Riccio II. “I do believe there was a spillover effect and I think that’s unfortunate.” In closing arguments, Riccio told jurors the case was based on the words of convicted felons and flimsy at best. He also said Nassi was “in it up to his neck” as opposed to Braddock, whose job was to collect campaign donations. The government played recorded conversations that showed Braddock was told the checks he was collecting from political operative Harry Raymond Soucy were from phony donors and an attempt to influence legislation. Government attorneys also testified that Braddock accepted and entered the checks into a database knowing it was used to generate federal election reports. “He had a professional interest in making sure the campaign met its goals,” gov-

Bill prohibits minors from using tanning beds By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen

Earlier this month, state Sen. Terry Gerratana (DBerlin/New Britain) led passage of a bill that bans the use of tanning booths by people under the age of 17. The bill, known as Senate Bill 872, passed the Senate on May 17, and the House of

cer Institute, exposure to UV radiation increases the risk of developing skin cancer. It is estimated that in 2013, 76,690 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed, with 9,480 deaths in the U.S., according to the NIC. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, reviewed 19 studies that were conducted over a 25-year span of indoor tanning equipment. In 2009, IARC categorized tanning bed equipment as “carcinogenic to humans,” the same designation given to cigarettes. IARC’s review found that the risk of melanoma increased by 75 percent when tanning bed use started before age 35. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “IARC recommended banning commercial indoor tanning for those younger than 18 years to protect them from the increased risk for melanoma and other skin cancers.” Earlier in the legislative session, Senate Bill 872 passed the Public Health Committee, where Gerratana is a co-chair. During a public hearing on this bill, medical professionals submitted testimony in support of banning minors from using tanning facilities. “We feel that the evergrowing body of evidence linking the use of indoor tanning facilities and the deadliest form of skin cancer requires us to take a firmer stance on how these services are used by minors in the State of Connecticut,” said Dr. Phillip Kerr, of the Connecticut Dermatology Society, in his testimony before the Public Health Committee. “In doing so, we hope and anticipate that lives will be saved.” Due to the studies that link skin cancer to indoor tanning, the World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Dermatology have all recommended young people not to use tanning parlors.

ber vote for me to be their leader and throughout, I guess partly because they know the process so well, they were all very supportive saying ‘those are things we say up here generally about legislation.’ They felt very sorry that my name was included, but they know the type of person I am. I work really hard up here. My word is my bond, and it showed through this particular case, but you had to get through the case to realize I had ab-

Although unfortunate to be involved in this type of incident, I think it very much proved exactly that I am above approach as it comes to my legislating up here. I am going to do what’s right for my district and the state of Connecticut When you and Ray Soucy began texting back

Given the type of personality that (Soucy) is, I would have never imagined that he would have any access or ability to be involved with a scandal. He’s just never been a man of means, or anyone of means, so I thought it was more bragging or bloviating rather than anything of substance.

Friendly firefighters To the editor: Monday evening my wife and I took our 21 ½ month old daughter out for our nightly walk through some of Berlin’s neighborhoods. We stopped at the train station to show her a train. But it never came. We then walked down Farmington Avenue and with Kahlan riding on my shoulders, we walked past the old Kensington Furniture building where the Kensington Fire Department had all of their trucks and Firefighters out there, I assume doing drills. They were all grouped at the entrance in their gear, I am guessing receiving instructions on what to do, when one of the firefighters waved at us. Then, one by

one, a firefighter looked at what he was waving at and started waving too. Soon, the entire Kensington Company was waving at us like the three of us were a parade. It was then that I looked up at my daughter and she had a huge smile and was waving full born at them. I want to say thank you to the Kensington Fire Department for making a little girls night. We took her to see a train, but she found something better. Matt J Zangari Berlin

Commentary From the Friends of the Worthington Meeting House

Decoration Day remembered By Sallie Caliandri The Friends of the Worthington Meeting House is dedicated to raising awareness and support for the Worthington Meeting House, a prerevolutionary treasure in need of preservation. We need your voices. The holiday we know as Memorial Day had its beginning around the time of the Civil War, when families and loved ones came to the cemetery to place flowers on the graves of those who had died in service to their country. The custom of decorating graves goes back to ancient times, but after the Civil War it took on new meaning, with observances at various cemeteries in town. The ceremonies took a good part of the day, starting around 10 a.m. and continuing until after 2 p.m. There was no parade at first; people gathered at each site and at the last place (often at one of the monuments) there was a speaker, prayers, and perhaps musical selections from a band or drum corps. By 1905, Decoration Day was still an all-day affair,

with a parade involving school children, the Daughters of the American Revolution, veterans and bands. Somewhere along the line, the custom of alternating parade sites between Berlin, East Berlin and Kensington began. Berlin’s parade would start on Worthington Ridge near Peter Parley Row, and went to the World War I monument near Farmington Avenue. East Berlin’s parade came down Main Street past the Civil War monument and went into Wilcox Cemetery. Kensington’s parade started at the American Paper Goods factory and went up to the Civil War monument at Kensington Congregational Church. I grew up hearing stories about the Civil War veterans riding in the parades, some wearing uniforms, and some sporting the long white beards that we might associate with Col. Sanders. The stories were interesting, but had no real personal meaning to me. When I started researching the Civil War, I found some things that See Decoration, next page

brought it home. The first Berlin soldier to die in battle, James L. Bailey, lived in a house that had been right next door to where I grew up. The house burned in the early 1900s, but in 1860 had belonged to an elderly widow Anner Elton Cole Gladden and her maiden sister Hulda Elton. This young man had lost his father as a child, and was working as a farm laborer. He enlisted in the 5th CT volunteer infantry in June of 1861. He was killed at Cedar Mountain, VA, Aug. 9, 1862. He was only 22 years old. The records of the Kensington Congregational Church note his passing. In the next few weeks, several more Kensington names were added to the casualty list. A movement began to collect funds for a monument to the fallen. This culminated in the building of the first monument dedicated to Civil War soldiers. Our last Civil War veteran, Henry J. Colby, died in Berlin Nov. 21, 1938. He is buried in Maple Cemetery. The first to die in the Civil War was August Brandt, who

died of dysentery Sept. 10, 1861, at the age of 31. Cathy Nelson, of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, has compiled a list of names of Berlin men who fought in the war. It numbers 209 people. It is available on the library’s website, along with information about other resources at the library. A sad detail: of the 209 men who served, 70 are known to have died, and others were never heard from again. A number of residents were prisoners of war at Andersonville or other prison camps. Some died; some survived, but were never the same again. PTSD is not a new condition. Memorial Day has evolved into a day of picnics and parades. It is the unofficial beginning of summer. Yes, it’s nice to have a long weekend, but don’t forget the ones who died so that we can celebrate. Try doing a little research. You may have a Civil War hero who lived in your backyard. We will be highlighting some of these heroes over the next few weeks. Sallie Caliandri is a board member of the Berlin Historical Society and a member of the Friends of the Worthington Meeting House. She is a guest columnist for The Berlin Citizen.

Read a book with your ears By Helen Aveline I’ve been a fan of audiobooks since the days when a book was a big bulky set of a dozen or so cassette tapes that I listened to, in my car, on my commute to work. Today, I think they’re an absolute necessity for anyone who wants to read a great many books but finds they never have enough time to get to all of them. Here’s why: 1. Listening to audiobooks can easily increase your overall book consumption by 50 percent to 100 percent because you’re using time that previously wasn’t available and turning it into valuable “reading” time. 2. You can checkout free downloadable audiobooks from the State Library or our Overdrive collection with your library card and

Open Book download them to your computer for transfer to mp3 players, iPads, and mobile devices. Or browse through our large collection of books on CDs and pop one into your car or home stereo. 3. You can listen while exercising; while walking or hiking; or while doing mundane tasks around the house or yard like folding laundry or doing dishes. If you do most of your listening while you drive, no worries — it is super easy to get your audiobook from your computer and into your car: — If your newer car features an auxiliary input,

then you can simply transfer the MP3 file to your smartphone, iPod or MP3 player, plug the device into the auxiliary input with an auxiliary cable and you’re good to go. — If your car doesn’t have an auxiliary input and/or you don’t own a smartphone, iPod or MP3 player, just burn the audiobook MP3 file onto a CD. You can burn CDs using iTunes on both the Mac and the PC or you can use Windows Media Player on the PC. 4. Even if you feel you don’t do well with audio processing of book content, you can try various kinds of books to see if some work better than others. Some people don’t like to listen to fiction in audio form because they can’t get immersed in the story, but find they can engage just fine with non-fiction.

It’s worth experimenting. 5. And don’t forget the kids! Studies show that children can listen to stories well beyond their independent reading levels and comprehend more complex literature. Audiobooks can also expand their vocabulary and demonstrate fluent reading and appropriate phrasing, intonation, and articulation. I’ve laughed out loud at Tina Fey’s “Bossypants;” had to pull to the side of the road because I was crying so hard at Adriana Trigiani’s “The Shoemaker’s Wife;” and sat in my garage 15 minutes after I got home because I just had to find out what happened next in “Room” by Emma Donoghue. If you haven’t embraced audiobooks yet, I highly recommend you give them a try!

house between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., on Saturday. The Berlin Historical Society will be having a tag sale on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the museum, on Peck Street. The museum will open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A limited supply of trails maps for Berlin’s conservation areas are being made available through a grant from CCHD and will be handed out at the events. “The Town of Berlin has wonderful open spaces and recreational opportunities,” said Jennifer Benner, CFPA’s Connecticut Trails Day coordinator. “They have been great CT Trails Day Weekend supporters over the years, offering fantastic events for all to enjoy. Their enthusiasm for this celebration is a great model for other communities to help get their residents outdoors and enjoying nature.” For details on the Trails Day Weekend hikes and walks, use the link on the Town of Berlin website at www.town.berlin.ct.us, or look for booklets at the BerlinPeck Memorial Library and at the Town Planning office, Town Hall room 7. The Ragged Mountain hike was added after the Trails Day booklet was published. Information can be found on the Connecticut Forest and Park Association website, ctwoodlands.org/CT-TrailsDayWeekend2013, under “view additional events and updates.” For more information, contact Economic Development Director Jim Mahoney at (860) 828-7005.

LAX men fall short of tourney but end with win By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

BURLINGTON – The end of the Berlin High boys’ lacrosse season came like that final day of vacation. The Redcoats know a long winter awaits with the constant reminder that they were unable to qualify for the Class M tournament, but the sweet smell of a late May victory will serve as a refreshing finish, as well as a building block for campaigns ahead. The program continues to surge forward under the guidance of coach Scott Rossi, who has worked hard for a decade to gain Berlin a foothold among the growing number of lacrosse towns in central Connecticut. He envisions a positive future after the Redcoats concluded their campaign with a scintillating 13-12 victory over tournament-bound

Lewis Mills, at Malerbo Field, that ended with a hard swallow and a wipe of the brow. “We’re taking steps in the right direction,” Rossi said. “I think now what we really need to do is improve these kids’ lacrosse IQ and that it’s not an individual game with just a lot of dodging and good stickwork. To win at the varsity level it has to be a complete team effort.” The seniors went out on a high note, led by jitterbugging attackman Nick Mangiafico, who tallied five goals and assisted on another. Greg Buck, headed for a college career at Albertus Magnus, notched a goal and an assist. Long-stick midfielder Tyler Bouchard made some key defensive plays. Wojtek Zak, Jordan Kinney, Mason Paul and Jey Soucy also finished out their scholastic careers. Replacing the scoring

Berlin senior attackman Nick Mangiafico. punch that the lightning-andthunder combination of Mangiafico and Buck provided will be the primary concern as the program advances. Juniors Jordan Kradas (3 goals, 3 assists), goalie Matt Cote (8 saves), attackman Ben Tomascak (3 goals, assist), midfielder Luc

Bolduc and defenders Anthony Duong and Sean Pollack will form the core for 2014. “We’re definitely looking for some guys who can step up and finish for us,” Rossi said. “We have some guys on this team who have the potential. They just lack the confidence and experience right now.” Bolduc is expected to be among the leaders. “We’ve taken a good step forward,” Bolduc said, after the win over Mills. “This is only our second year. We had four wins last year. Now we have six (6-10). We have a lot of juniors coming back and I think we’re going to do good.” The Redcoats rode a dominating third quarter to gain the necessary edge against Lewis Mills, which cruised through the Western Connecticut Lacrosse League unscathed in 10 games, but went 1-5 against outside chal-

lenges. Trailing by two at the half, Berlin used three goals by Mangiafico and two by Kradas to take a 10-8 lead heading into the fourth quarter. “[Kradas has] really developed,” Rossi said. “He came on late to the varsity program last year. He’s been a starter all season. He’s still developing as an aggressive attacker and goal-scorer, but there’s no one better as a setup man for us.” Buck’s goal with 8:30 remaining gave the Redcoats an 11-8 lead but the Spartans, in need of a win to gain a home-field advantage in the first round of the Class S tournament, knotted the game at 12 with 2:16 to go. Bouchard nimbly picked up a ball at midfield to ignite the game-winning attack. A centering pass from Kradas

BHS softball squad overcomes Plainville By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

PLAINVILLE – The Berlin and Plainville softball teams hit the tournament trail with their footprints coming from vastly different places. The Redcoats, challengers for the pennant in the ultracompetitive CCC South, had the makeup and talent of a state title contender. The Blue Devils, thinner on talent, also had to cope with inseason reconstruction work due to personnel issues. But when it came down to the final game of the regular season – Plainville’s Senior Night – the resilient Devils gave Berlin a scare before bowing, 6-4, before a nice crowd at the PHS softball diamond. Berlin (17-3) earned the sixth seed in Class L and a home date with No. 27 Branford, which was slated for Tuesday night, May 21. Plainville (9-11) was seeded

Berlin’s Brittany Sullivan is tagged out trying to steal second by Plainville’s Dani Angelillo in the first inning. 27th and last in Class M, and thus was scheduled for road game at No. 6 East Haven Tuesday afternoon, May 21. After Katy Dressel opened the second inning with a single, Plainville took advantage of two outfield errors to take a 2-0 lead. Dressel scored

on a groundout by Nicole Basile. Rachel Lancaster reached first on an error, stole second and scored on the second miscue. Berlin struck back for one in the third when hits by Amanda Patterson and Brittany Sullivan paved the way

for Megan Wicander’s basesloaded walk. The Redcoats surged ahead with three in the fifth. Callie Veach started with a triple and scored on Patterson’s single. Infield hits by Sullivan and Wicander were responsible for the go-ahead runs, which scored on a wild pitch and catcher’s error. But Plainville wasn’t finished. Arielle Lozefski and Dani Angelillo had singles and the Devils took advantage of two more Berlin errors to tie the score. The Devils’ resilience was testament to the work turned in this season by coach Jen Micowski. “We definitely gave them a good fight. We went over there the first time around and it was 13-8 (May 3) and 64 is definitely a step in the right direction,” Micowski said. “This is the type of game we needed to lead into the state tournament.” Berlin coach Jason Pires

focused on his own club’s resilience for turning back a determined host. “We didn’t have our ‘A’ game – the kids know that and we know that – but we were able to overcome and persevere,” Berlin coach Jason Pires said. “We played poorly, especially in the middle of the game, but it was 44. I told them, ‘No matter what’s happened so far, you’re not even losing the game. It’s a two-inning game. Let’s go play like we can play.’ “We cleaned it up and we did the little things. We had a couple plays that didn’t go our way but at the end of the day, they did everything they could.” The Redcoats scored the winning run in the sixth. Pitcher Makayla Harris lashed a single to left and courtesy runner Tess Rapaci took second on a single to center by Kelsie Anderson.

Williams’ hit gives Redcoats sweep of Plainville By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

BERLIN – Gritty. When Berlin and Plainville renew one of Connecticut’s premier baseball rivalries, the result is usually two groups of baseballsavvy kids slugging it out on their knees as the dust kicks up at home plate. The Redcoats had their way in the first installment of the Route 372 Skirmish, but Plainville was determined not to let the second one get away. The contest had all the trimmings of a great rivalry renewal. Neither Berlin senior starter Connor Bennett nor Plainville sophomore Brett Snowden – both lefthanders – are going to bring out scouts toting radar guns,

but both managed their games well. No batter managed an extra-base hit. No crookednumber rallies here. And when the game’s determining factor emerged, it was a walk and stolen base. Daren Grabowski worked a free pass leading off the home seventh, stole second and Mitch Williams brought the curtain down with a stinging single as Berlin locked up a first-round home Class L tournament game with a 2-1 win over the Blue Devils, May 20, at Zipadelli Field, Sage Park. “It’s a battle, always a battle,” Berlin coach Leo Veleas said. “The competition is good.” The Redcoats (13-7, 9-5) finished third to Bristol Central and Maloney in the CCC

South. Defending Class M champion Plainville, which secured a tournament berth May 13 with a 5-2 win at Bristol Eastern, ended the regular season at 8-12, its 7-7 division record good for a fourth-place tie with the Lancers. Berlin has won three straight and eight of the last 10 in the series, but this one was very much in question as the first inning unfolded. A baserunning mistake – one of three that would haunt Plainville – blew up the Devils’ first. Berlin used successive singles by Grabowski, Williams and a sharp RBI hit by Dante Vasi to take a 1-0 lead. Jordan Zima’s sacrifice put two in

scoring position, but Snowden induced successive groundballs to limit the damage. Veleas had seen his club struggle to deliver in the clutch before. “We get opportunities but we don’t capitalize,” he said. “We’ve played in 11 one-run games out of 20. We have to capitalize on the mistakes the other teams make or when we put guys in scoring position, somebody has to come up with a hit. Thankfully in the last inning, Mitch hit the ball and that was the name of the game.” Plainville experienced the same problem in the second inning. Hits by Tyler Favreau and

Matt Sauvron and a walk to Brian Dostaler filled the bases with two out but Bennett retired Dean DeMartinis on a fly to left. “We had plenty of chances to drive in chances and we didn’t,” Plainville coach Lou Mandeville said. “They did, too, but I expect to hold them.” The Devils tied the game in the fourth when Tyler Pina singled, took second on a fielder’s choice and scored on a two-out hit by Sauvron. Sauvron, who advanced to second on the throw home, tried to score on a single by Dostaler but was called out at the plate on a throw from Grabowski in medium center.

grounder to the right side. Berlin added an insurance tally in the seventh when a dropped fly ball off the bat of Courtney Silvia and a single by Kaitlyn Guild was followed by Katherine Burek’s sacrifice fly.

Harris allowed just four infield hits and all the runs she yielded were unearned. “The pitching’s been outstanding all year but she was not on her ‘A’ game,” Pires said. “She’s good at hitting her spots and she wasn’t right. She has high expectations for herself and that makes her a great pitcher.” The Berlin defense was charged with four errors but a sterling play by Sullivan at shortstop ended Plainville’s upset bid when she turned a game-ending double play. Micowski was undeterred by the loss, confident that her program is showing signs of turning the corner. What she saw as aloofness in the loss to St. Paul the night before was reversed after a heartfelt speech. “I was unhappy with the way we took the field so we talked a lot about what their jersey needs to mean to them,” Micowski said. Every time you put it on, you have to take pride in what you represent. “I asked them, when people ask you where you’re from, do you say Plainville like you’re proud of it or do you say Plainville like you have to define where it is. There’s a huge difference when you’re representing your team. I think they took it to heart. They represented Plainville and I’m hoping we can do that in the state tournament.”

Voelpel, Grieco win individual titles at CCC South meet By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

“We had to drop her from the 4x800 and the open 800,” Berlin coach Steve Soucy said. “She did run her 400 and was able to pull out the victory. It may not have been her fastest time, but she toughed it out and came away with the victory.” The foursome of Nicole Grieco, Michelle Grieco, Kristen Madeia and Jody DiCicco took the relay in a time of 10:11.16. Michelle Grieco, a freshman, was the Redcoats’ other individual champion, winning the 3200 in 12:25.27. “She went into the race planning on sitting in second place for the first six laps and then make her move at that point,” Soucy said. “Her race went perfectly to plan and she was able to get the win. “It is great to see a freshman understand the difference between running for time and racing. She came into the season wanting to constantly improve her time and over the year she has shown a lot of growth in learning how to manage a race and conserve energy.” For Plainville, junior sprinter Shea Echols blazed to victory in the 100-meter dash and finished second in the 200 meters. Six Berlin girls earned AllCCC status. In addition to Voelpel, Michelle Grieco, Madeia, Taylor Lupini,

PLAINVILLE – Plainville High senior Malik Gordon was the lone triple winner across the board May 21 in the CCC South track meet held for boys and girls, at Alumni Stadium. Gordon soared to 6’4 in the high jump, tying the school record set by Jason Davison in 1987. He also swept both hurdles events – the 110 meters in a personal best of 15.77 and the 300 meters in 43.82. “Malik was locked in,” Plainville coach Shaun Berard said. “He now has his eyes set on a great Class M performance (May 29).” Plainville’s sophomore miler Quentin Lux won both the 800- and 1600-meter races. He outpaced his teammate Ryan Acey in the 800, crossing in 2:06.07. Acey took second, just 33 hundredths behind him. “Quentin will run the 800 in Class M in an attempt to qualify for the State Open,” Berard said. Plainville finished third in the team scoring with 112 points, behind division champion Middletown and runner-up Bristol Central. Berlin was seventh with 39.5. Senior Andrew Rottier helped the Plainville cause with a second-place finish in

the 3200 meters, followed closely by sophomore Omar Abdelsame. Zeke Wells finished second in the pole vault with a 10’6 effort. “He has developed over the past four years into a tremendous athlete,” Berard said. “Pole vaulting over 10 feet takes strength, skill and guts. He has worked hard every practice for 4 years, been consistent all year and I’ve never had to worry about his head being in the right place. All of this paid off.” The best finish for the Berlin boys was a secondplace effort by the 4x100 relay unit – Matt Kall, Hiral Patel, Mike Pomian, Christian LaPierre – that fell just eight one-hundredths off the school record of 45.14. “We had lots of sixths and sevenths, which means we were basically a seventhplace team,” coach Rick Hanbury said. “Our strength all season was our depth and consistency across all the events. We were everywhere, but lacked star power. This made us a good dual-meet team, but an average championship-meet team.” Voelpel, Grieco golden: On the girls’ side, Berlin’s University of Marylandbound runner Catherine Voelpel won the 400 meters despite battling an illness that kept her from competing further.

The couple sends about nine shipments overseas each year. “Every six weeks or so, we send packages to whoever we have addresses for,” he said. “We’ve sent microwaves. We’ve sent Christmas trees complete with lights and ornaments. We’ve sent Girl Scout cookies. Anything that’s hard for troops to get overseas. When we send a box to a service member, we hope that he or she will share it with others in their unit.” Berlin resident John Harrington, Sr. said his son, John Harrington Jr., received care packages from Rockin’ 4 The Troops a few years ago when he was serving in Afghanistan with the National Guard. “He loved it,” Harrington said. “You should see the pictures of the service guys opening the packages. It was like Christmas. It’s incredi-

“I don’t think people realize how much it costs to send the packages,” he said adding that donations received at the concert help cover some of these shipping costs, but extra donations

are always needed. Deschenes said it became necessary to hold the event in two separate locations recently, because each year more and more musicians have offered their services to help the troops. Rockin’ 4 The Troops concerts will be held on June 1, from 1 to 8 p.m., at the St. Jean Baptiste Society, 209 Smalley Street, New Britain,

and at The Downtown Café, 118 Main St., Bristol. Tom Deschenes will be playing at the New Britain location with Green Label Band and UnCovered. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ Rockin4TheTroops. To find out about sending care packages to someone serving overseas, call (860) 906-6515.

to Tomascak restored the one-goal lead with 1:23 left. With 10 seconds left, Mills was in a desperate way. Possessing behind their own goal, the Spartans elected to go over the top with longstick midfielder Patrick Keegan supplying the shot. The ball one-hopped Cote and he deflected it safely away like a catcher blocking a pitch in the dirt. The ball kicked to the corner as time ran out. “The saves Matt comes up with are absolutely huge,” Rossi said. “Matt will make those save right on the crease, one-on-one. He never falls asleep on you and never gets caught out of position. This is a very steady goaltender.” David Borovsky was the primary source of offense for the Spartans with three goals and four assists. Griffin Hayes had three goals. “This game wraps up our season pretty good,” Bolduc said. “It’s a team we beat last year but they definitely improved. We improved, too, though. I think it’s a good win to end the season on and we should be proud of that.”
