Ground broken for six-building project By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

The foundation has been laid for the first building at the new Stick Village. Berlin-based construction company Wicklund Builders broke ground on the project July 24. Stick Village is located on Webster Square Road adja-

cent to the Schaller dealership. The complex is planned for six stand-alone office and retail buildings, which will vary from 2,500 to 4,200 square feet for a total of 23,000 square feet for the full project. A press release explains that “Each building will have its own identity, but each will have similar exterior

materials” to create a “village-feel” with a U-shaped layout. So far one of the planned buildings has been leased and the first tenant will be ProNatural Physicians Group, an alternative medicine clinic featuring naturopaths, acupuncturists, and massage therapists. Founder Ann Aresco told The

Citizen that what distinguishes naturopathic medicine from traditional medicine is that naturopaths are trained to use the least invasive treatments first before resorting to pharmaceuticals or surgery. These solutions can include botanicals, See Project / Page A3

Those driving on the Chamberlain Highway last week may have caught an interesting sight as master wood carver and sculptor Kris Connors created a custom piece for a homeowner out of a dead tree in the resident’s front yard. The carved eagle standing atop a globe was coming together, with the eagle nearly finished on a hot Friday, July 31. The heat didn’t prevent numerous individuals from stopping by to see the artist at work as The Citizen interviewed him. A couple passers-by remarked at Connors’ skill and how difficult the task looked. Connors has been creating three dimensional works of art for some 14 years. The Clinton-based artist said he was always drawn to creating 3D art, but he didn’t know how to weld or bronze cast. See Sculptor / Page A4

An internationally famous band is coming to the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. The Kenn Morr band will bring their acoustic, folk, rock, and Americana stylings to an outdoor concert Monday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m. with the concert to be moved indoors in the event of inclement weather. “This man writes songs with deep content,” wrote a reviewer for Folk Words in the United Kingdom, as quoted on KennMorr.com. “Songs of force, Songs that stick with you. His richly toned voice hovers across a laid back relaxed delivery that makes you listen to lyrics that reflect life’s experiences in a way we can all share.” Morr told The Citizen that, as the

The Kenn Morr Band. Kenn Morr album, “After Image,” which features 28 of the band’s most popular songs, some transformed with acoustic renderings. “We sat in a circle in the studio and did all these songs live, together, facing each other,” Morr said. The concert will feature 10 to 12 songs for an hour-long performance. One song sure to be featured, Morr said, is “My Friend,” a song Morr wrote while mourning the death of his golden retriever in 2010. “I was really sad when I wrote the song, but it’s one of my favorites to sing,” Morr said, and one of the band’s most popular tracks. “People often come up to me after the show and say that they lost a dog,” and were touched by the song, he said. Morr often transforms personal pain into beautiful music. Not long after writing “My Friend,” his mother and a best friend also died. Out of this immensely difficult

time came the song “Trade Winds,” that likely will be featured at the concert. He said this song came out of “this fantasy I had of jumping on a sailing ship and just taking off for a while,” he said. “The Kenn Morr Band came highly recommended by two other public libraries in the state,” said Carrie Tyszka, head of Adult Services. “Since we’ve had such great response to previous musical performances from the New Britain Symphony Orchestra, I thought it would be fun to offer a different type of music. I hope to start offering musical programs on a more regular basis.” The Berlin-Peck show will be a “three piece act,” as the band’s fiddle player will be out of town. “It’s going to be a fun one,” Morr said. For more information about the band and to listen to some of their music visit KennMorr.com.

The performer enjoys the more quiet and intimate setting where people come just for the music. The New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park, 191 Farmington Ave., has scheduled summer classes for preschool children through grade 5. The preschool POPSICLES classes for children ages 2 to 5 have three ses-

three-dimensional signs. Ninety percent of the carving is done with a chainsaw, with smaller power tools like a sander, grinder, drill, and wood-burning torch for fine detail work. Many people picture an artist with a hammer and chisel, but more advanced tools are far more effective, Connors explained. He has created a number of other works in the area, including a 10-foot tall wood carving, in the front lawn of Miss Porter’s School, of the schools’ three mascots standing on top of each other. You might spot his work in Middletown, where he has carved a large hawk standing on top of rocks, or in Hartford,

where he has carved an elephant and an abstract piece composed of shell-like forms. Connors does most of his work through the internet via his website, customwoodcarvings.com. Often clients have a vision for a piece, but with surprising frequency they simply have a piece of wood they would like to see transformed into a work of art. Connors sketches designs out on graph paper prior to beginning a project to make sure the design fits with the wood being used. “When it’s graphed, I can transfer the graph onto the wood,” drawing grid lines to match shapes, he explained.

“I always thought it was something I could never do until I was at a fair and I saw someone chainsaw carving,” Connors told The Citizen. He bought a chainsaw and a carving set for his birthday, and a decade-and-a-half long passion was born. Now, he also works with ceramics, resin and even bronze. He also creates furniture, and much of his business is in creating

Police had asked her to assist with giving CPR to a fall victim shortly after officers arrived at the scene of an accident. Officer Ted Fuini and Peterson kept the fall victim breathing until Hunter’s Ambulance arrived. The injured person was resuscitated and arrived at the hospital with a pulse. The Berlin Police Department honored a five-year-old boy with a COIN award July 22 in recognition of his honesty and help in the case of a lost wallet. Berlin Police have awarded several of the department’s new Community Officer Investment Network coins since minting the program earlier this year. Michelle Nowik said her son Henry was playing at the Little People’s Playground near the library and municipal complex when he found a wallet. Henry brought the wallet to his mother and accompanied her to the police department to return it, whereupon Sgt. Mark Soneson presented him with the COIN, a coin embla-

zoned with a shield and the town seal for helping the wallet find its way to its rightful owner. “We could use a few more citizens like Henry. Nice job buddy!” Berlin police wrote on their Facebook page. The story didn’t end there. “I was shocked when he was on the three o’ clock news, I was completely floored,” Nowik said. “He thought it was really cool,” she said, adding that Henry was excited that his friends would see him on Eyewitness News. The local news station aired a segment with the photo police had taken of him and posted to their Facebook page. “It was just cute. He really likes the recognition of it,” the boy’s mother said, but it feels “a bit weird,” for

Opinion Heat and cars, and keeping children safe This is the time of year when heart-breaking stories of children succumbing to the extreme heat inside parked cars are most likely to the make headlines. In the United States, on average, 38 children meet their end in this brutal way each year. While this certainly does not reach the level of an epidemic, who would disagree that even one such death is too many? How do these gut-wrenching incidents happen? The reasons are many. In some cases, youngsters accidentally lock themselves in a vehicle. In others, parents or caregivers forget the child. And in some horrific – albeit rare – instances, the little ones are intentionally trapped. While it’s easy to

chastise adults for forgetting a child in a car, or allowing them to play around one, these tragedies do in fact happen to fine people. We live in a fast-paced society. We’re juggling many things at once. Anyone’s mind can drift for a bit amid the hustle and bustle, and — as the statistics indicate — the consequences can be disastrous. According to Janette Fennell, president and founder of KidsAndCars.org, “far too many wonderful parents and caregivers believe that this would never happen to them or their family. Nobody is immune.” It doesn’t take long at all for a vehicle to become dangerously hot, especially for children, whose body tem-

perature can rise up to five times faster than that of an adult. Even when the weather is mild, say in the 60s, the temperature inside a car can soar to more than 110 degrees. And a car can heat up 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. So far this year, 10 children have died due to vehicular heat stroke, and the hottest days of summer are now upon us. Please scan the inside of your vehicle and lock the doors before walking away from it. With a little practice, this can become as second nature as pocketing your cell phone before heading out. And the effort could spare us all another terrible headline. This editorial originally appeared in the Meriden Record-Journal.

Guidelines for free or reduced-price meals Berlin Public Schools announced the policy for determining eligibility of children who may receive free or reduced price meals served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs or free milk served under the Special Milk Program. Local school officials have adopted the United States Department of Agriculture’s Income Eligibility Guidelines following family size and income criteria for determining eligibility. Income guidelines will be used in Connecticut from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016, for determining eligibility of participants for free and reduced price meals and free milk in the Child Nutrition Programs. Children from families whose income is at or below the levels are eligible for free or reduced price meals or free milk. Applications are available at Berlinschools. org. To apply for free or reduced price meals or free milk, households should fill out the application and return it to school. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office at each school and the Board of Education office. Only one application is required per household and an application for free or reduced price benefits cannot be approved unless it contains complete eligibility information as indicated on the application and instructions. The information provided on the application is confidential and will be used only for the purposes of determining eligibility and for administration and enforcement of the lunch and breakfast programs. The district may share your eligibility information with education, health, and nutrition programs to help them evaluate, fund, or determine benefits for their programs, auditors for program reviews, and law enforcement officials to help them look into violations of program rules. This information may also be verified at any time during the school year by school or other pro-

gram officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. For up to 30 operating days into the new school year, eligibility from the previous year will continue within the same LEA. When the carry-over period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children must pay full price for school meals and the school will not send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility. No application is required if the district directly certifies a child based on a household member receiving assistance from the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Family Assistance (TFA) program. All children in these households are eligible for free meal benefits. Households receiving assistance under the SNAP/TFA programs will be notified of their eligibility and their children will be provided free benefits unless the household notifies the determining official that it chooses to decline benefits. If any child(ren) was not listed on the eligibility notice, the household should contact the district or school to have free meal benefits extended to that child(ren). If any child was not listed on the eligibility notice, the household should contact the district or school to have free meal benefits extended to that child. Households receiving SNAP benefits or TFA for their children should only submit an application if they are not notified of their eligibility by Sept. 16. If a child is not directly certified, the household should complete a free and reduced price meal application form. The application for the SNAP or TFA households require the SNAP or TFA case number. The signature of an adult household member is also required. Children in households participating in WIC may See Meals / Page A11

Firefighters plan ‘bigger, better’ show this year By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

“It’s a great event to bring the family to,” according to Berlin Fire Chief Jim Simons— the Touch-a-Truck and Car Show is back for a second year. As with the resoundingly successful first year, the event will be free to attend with plenty of parking at Sage Park off of the Berlin Turnpike. A fee is charged to enter into the car show, with half of the entrance fees supporting veterans’ charities. The Berlin Volunteer Fire Departments are organizing the event and have scheduled it for Saturday, Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last year, the fire chief said that the event had a great turnout. “It’s great that so many townspeople came out to support their fire department,” Simons said at the time. This year, “we have a fire truck, a Hunter’s ambulance, a police cruiser, a mini-excavator, and some Army trucks,” planned for the touch-a-

truck, Simons said. “A lot of nice stuff for the kids to see and play on.” Members of the fire department will be barbecuing hot dogs and hamburgers and hawking ice cream “and all that good stuff,” the fire chief added. The car show is expected to draw some 200 entrants, featuring hot rods, custom cars, and even the autos of local racers including a dragster, a modified, and a few sprint cars. Simons said the firefighters are hoping the event will be bigger, better, and more organized than the first year. Parking will be more organized, and the festivities will be closer together, in the front of the park, rather than more spread out as they were last year. Simons said firefighters are working with the Lion’s Club to coordinate parking. With plenty of food, the touch-a-truck for the kids and the car show for the adults, “we’re going to have something for everyone there,” Simons said.

On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law with these words: “No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine. No longer will illness crush and destroy the savings that they have so carefully put away over a lifetime. For 50 years, the Medicare program has provided essential health care services for millions of people who are age 65 or older, disabled, or have debilitating diseases. Without Medicare, many people would not be able to pay for hospital care, doctor’s visits, medical tests, preventive services, or prescription drugs. Your Medicare card is the most important piece of identification you own as a Medicare beneficiary since medical providers will request it when you seek their services. If you need to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged Medicare card, you can do it online with a My Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Requesting a replacement

card through My Social Security is safe, convenient, and easy. Going online saves you a trip to your local Social Security office or unproductive time on the phone. Request your replacement Medicare card the easy and convenient way — online — and you’ll get it in the same amount of time as you would if you applied in an office or over the phone — in about 30 days. Fifty years ago, Medicare didn’t have as many options as it does today. As the largest public health program in the United States, Medicare includes four parts to keep you covered: Part A is insurance that covers inpatient hospital stays, outpatient care in nursing facilities, hospice, and home health care. Part B includes medical insurance for doctor’s services, medical supplies, outpatient care, and preventive services. Part C is a Medicare advantage plan that allows you to choose your health care coverage through a provider organization. You must have Part A and Part B to enroll in Part C. This plan usually includes Medicare prescrip-

children. Additionally, a foster child is categorically eligible for free meals and may be included as a member of the foster family if the foster family chooses to also apply for benefits. If the foster family is not eligible for free or reduced price benefits, it does not prevent a foster child from receiving free meal benefits. Note however, that a foster child’s free eligibility does not automatically extend to all students in the household. Application forms for all other households require a statement of total household income, household size and names of all household members. The last four digits of the social security number of an adult household member must be included or a statement that the household does not have one. The adult household member must also sign the application certifying that the information provided is correct. Under the provisions of the policy for determining eligibility for free and reduced price meals, the Food Service Director will review applications and determine eligibility. Sports Paladino captures 81st Connecticut Open By Nathan Brown

Special to The Citizen

Cody Paladino earned his first victory as a professional by capturing the 81st Connecticut Open in Fairfield on Wednesday, July 29. | Photo courtesy of Connecticut State Golf Association

Cody Paladino of Kensington held a one stroke lead heading into the final day and never looked back, posting a one under-par round of 70 for a two stroke victory at the 81st Connecticut Open Championship at The Patterson Club. The state’s most prestigious open championship was held July 27th – 29th at the 6,824 yard par-71 course in Fairfield, Connecticut. Conducted by the Connecticut State Golf Association, the Connecticut Open is the only CSGA Championship that is open to both amateurs and professionals. The tournament tests the state’s top golfers over three rounds of stroke play at the renowned The Patterson Club in Fairfield, Connecticut. The total purse for the

tournament is $50,000, with the professional champion capturing a winner’s check of $12,500. Paladino, the 2006 and 2013 CSGA Player of the Year, began the day with a one stroke lead over Pete Ballo of Woodway Country Club and amateur Nick Harrington of The Windham Club. But with a total of thirteen players within five shots of the lead, he knew he had to play well to have a chance at the title. Paladino opened his round with eight straight pars and standing in the fairway at the par-5 ninth, he held a two stroke victory over four-time Connecticut Open Champion Kyle Gallo of Tallwood Country Club. From there, he hit his approach to within a foot, good enough for a birdie and a three shot lead at the turn. “The birdie on 9 was a huge kick-start and really got the day going in the right direction,” said Paladino. “I made some great par saves on the fifth and sixth holes, and when I saw the leaderboard on the sixth green, I saw that no one was really making a big move. So I was totally fine starting out with eight straight pars. The pins were very difficult and it was hard to get the ball close to the hole.” After making the turn in one under-par and -7 for the championship, he tacked on another birdie the par-5 11th to get to -8. Standing on the twelfth tee, his lead was three – but he would not be without chasers. “I had a feeling if some-

one was going to shoot four or five under, it would have to be a really special round,” said Paladino. “So I just kept focusing on what I was doing and not get complacent out there.” Indeed, there would be a host of players who used the back nine to put together a special round and catapult up the leaderboard. Among them was amateur John Flaherty of TPC River Highlands, the first round co-leader who birdied #9, 11 and 14 to jump to six under-par for the championship, just two shots behind the lead. With a host of players chasing him, Paladino hit his tee shot on the par-3 12th hole into the greenside bunker. Knowing he needed to keep the momentum going, he rolled in a clutch par save to maintain his two shot advantage. Even when a pair of bogies on the 15th and 16th holes dropped his lead from three strokes to one, Paladino rebounded like a champion, hitting his approach on the par-4 17th to fifteen feet and calmly rolling in the birdie putt. After hitting it just long on the final hole, an up-anddown fifteen foot par save on the final hole sealed the two stroke victory for the 26 year-old from Kensington, Connecticut. “The 17th hole was a huge moment and the tournament was on the line. I made two sloppy bogies on No. 15 and 16, and knowing No. 17 and 18 were into the wind, I knew I had to play them well. I wasn’t hitting the short irons as well today but I putted extremely well, and the putt on #17 was the exclamation point.” For Paladino, the Connecticut Open marks his fifth CSGA major championship, having already won the Connecticut Public Links Championship (2006), Russell C. Palmer Cup (2013), Connecticut Amateur (2013) and Tournament of Champions See Golf / Page A17
