Council commits to restoration of meeting house

Town mourns for coach Jim Day

By Ashley Kus The Citizen

By Ashley Kus The Citizen

Plans to restore and reuse the historic Worthington Meeting House are moving forward after the Town Council recently agreed to endorse the project.

Berlin High School is mourning the loss of wrestling coach Jim Day, who died Thursday, Feb. 22 at the age of 64.

“The Meeting House is even more important since we lost the train station,” said Mayor Mark Kaczynski, referencing the 18th century structure that burnt down in Dec. 2016.

“It’s a devastating loss,” said Jeff Mauri, Berlin High School athletic director.

Built in 1774, the town-owned meeting house has been a landmark on Worthington Ridge, serving as a meeting place, library and a school until the building closed to the public in the 1970s.

Day began his tenure at Berlin High School as a special education teacher and became the head wrestling coach in 1981. Later, he also served as athletic director. From 1985 to 1994, Day’s See Day, A3

Social media post leads to extra police presence at schools By Ashley Kus The Citizen

Parents were notified Friday morning that police were at all the schools in the district due to a “concern on social media.”

Superintendent of Schools Brian Benigni said he was notified by Police Chief John Klett Friday morning that federal Homeland Security had found a “concerning post” with a Berlin internet protocol address — a unique number that can be used to

locate an internet user. “They found it was not a credible threat,” Benigni said. Classes at the high school and middle school were already in session

when a message went out to parents informing them of increased police forces at the schools. Several people on social media said See Post, A3

But in Berlin, that hard-work ethic, focus and passion — there were a group of people that believed in that. That's why it flourished. It very easily could have failed in another community."

News of Day’s death traveled quickly. “The amount of lives he’s touched is unmatched,” Mauri said.

Bruxism – This is more commonly known as teeth grinding. Patients who struggle with teeth grinding may, over time, cause hairline fractures to develop in their teeth, making them vulnerable to hot or cold stimuli. What’s more, teeth grinding can also wreak havoc on tooth enamel, resulting in erosion of this protective barrier.

Tooth Sensitivity and Your Smile One of the most common complaints Dr. Michalski hears from patients is about tooth sensitivity, a common oral health problem typically caused when the gums recede, exposing tooth roots. When hot or cold stimuli come into contact with these areas, a sensation is passed through the tubules in the roots directly to the nerve of the tooth, creating pain. But, you might be wondering, what causes the gums to recede in the first place? Here are four of them:

CRISP AIR

How Can I Protect My Teeth? If you have problems with sensitive teeth, here are a few tips from Dr. Michalski to keep in mind. First, try using a toothpaste brand that treats sensitivity. For many patients, this can bring the much-needed relief they’ve been looking for. Second, finish your hygiene routine by using a prescription product with bioavailable minerals such as MI Paste™ which draws important minerals to teeth, desensitizing them in the process. And lastly, visit your dentist. Through regular exams, recommendations can be made about how to maintain a healthy smile.

GET ENERGIZED. GET NOURISHED.

A Day in the Life of Your Children They wake from a sound sleep, startled by the sound of their alarm clocks or your voice calling (yelling) to them for the fourth or fifth time. Groggy and still half asleep, they shuffle from their beds to the bathroom, stubbing their toe on something they should have put away, forcing them to hop on one foot the remainder of the way. They then shower in water containing who knows what kind of chemicals. Now, late for the bus or their ride they go running full speed down the stairs, grab two Pop-tarts and with a 40-pound bag of books strapped across their backs, they make a mad dash out of the house. At school, they sit all day in uncomfortable, hard-as-rock chairs with their heads bent over their books (whether they are reading or sleeping). When they break from the 6+ hours of bending their necks over their books (which is in the opposite direction of their natural neck curve) they are in a constant state of stress. Are they going to pass all of their classes? When will their face clear up? Will they win their next football game or gymnastics meet? What if they don’t get into college? And this is a good-to-best-cases scenario. On top of all that, some children have other serious personal struggles with their identity, handicaps, and peer pressure. After school, they challenge themselves physically with sports of all sorts: football, soccer, tennis, golf, track, wrestling, basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc. Unfortunately, often times these activities are fueled solely by the one lousy piece of pizza they had for lunch, or maybe a cheeseburger and fries, or sometimes nothing at all! By the time they arrive back at home in the evening, they are often exhausted, not to mention cranky. Dinner often is fast-food or if it is homemade they fall asleep on the couch while it is being prepared with their bodies contorted in some unbelievable position. After dinner, it is homework time or probably more likely TV or computer time where they sit lifeless for another several hours. Or maybe they sit and talk on their cell phone for hours on end with their friends, again with their heads tilted down stressing their delicate neck musculature. Finally, you yell to them, “… it’s getting late, you better get ready for bed,” mostly because you’re exhausted at this point and you just don’t want to deal with it anymore. Well, with all the physical, chemical and emotional stress your children pack into the typical day, do you really think their spines are going unaffected? Spinal misalignments or subluxations are caused by STRESS! Physical, chemical mental and emotional stress can and does weaken the entire body including the spine and vice versa. It’s when the body is weakened, run down, and exhausted when the spine can no longer hold its position and becomes subluxated. Subluxations cause interference and dysfunction to the nervous system which now leads to altered state of behavioral patterns. The nervous system is responsible for organizing every system in the body, so when it dysfunctions it creates dis-organization within the body instead of organization. If you want your children to learn and grow and play and be all they can be, and should be, you simply must have their spines checked regularly. It’s that simple. Have your children checked for subluxations, if you haven’t done so already. That way they won’t have to live years or decades with their bodies and minds in a state of dis-organization. I encourage everyone to be adjusted very regularly for life. Because it just makes sense! It’s far easier to maintain a healthy spine through childhood than to repair a neglected one when you’re an adult. Make the time for you and your family to get checked. It’s vitally important for your life and theirs...
