Train From A1 Depression, You Might Not Know You’re Feeling Down
Work on the new train station has been completed.
crease from six to 17 per day from New Haven to Hartford and six to 12 per day between Hartford and Springfield.
We all experience highs and lows. But when the lows become increasingly often and begin to interfere with the functions of daily living, then it’s a cause for concern.
The new station in Berlin is 20 feet away from the site of the old 19th-century station that was destroyed by a fire in December 2016. A year later, fire officials said the cause remains “undetermined.”
Depression affects twice as many women as men and most people don’t seek the help they need. Those that do, usually receive some type of drug therapy to mask the issues. The Biggest Concern? You may not realize you’re actually feeling depressed until after you’ve overcome it or someone mentions it to you. Often we think it’s just a bad day, but what happens is it becomes bad day, after bad day until it begins to affect your life, family and livelihood negatively.
“We are so very pleased that the Berlin station will officially be open,” said Chris Edge, town director of economic development. “The Town of Berlin hopes to see additional development in the train station area in the coming years.”
Common Symptoms of Depression • Chronic fatigue • Sleep problems • Overwhelming sadness • Hyper-irritability • Poor concentration • Changes in appetite • Withdrawal • Chronic physical symptoms • Thoughts of suicide

Not Just in Your Head, A Whole Body Experience Since your mind affects your body, and your body affects your mind, changing your physiology can change your psychology.
Hot hitting stretch for BHS alumnus Grabowski
Depression is really a whole body condition that affects body, mind, emotions and spirit. It’s not something to be ashamed of, nor is it something you can simply wish away. You can’t just “snap out of it” or put on a happy face and think it away. So, it’s time to do something about it, naturally if possible.

A recent study conducted by Duke University Medical Center, compared exercise with the use of a popular antidepressant. Those taking the drug saw a 38% relapse in their symptoms. In the exercise-only group, only 8% of participants experienced a relapse.
Along with being selected East Coast Conference Player of the Week recently, University of Bridgeport senior Daren Grabowski, of Berlin, was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers AssoGrabowski ciation of America East Region Hitter of the Week.

Grabowski hit in all seven games during a recent stretch (including five multihit games) to extend his hitting streak to nine contests, as he went 15-of-32 at the plate, which translates to a .469 batting average. He also blasted two home runs and drove in five as he posted a .750 slugging percentage and a .528 on base percentage from his lead-off spot in the Purple Knights' order. He also scored a whopping 14 runs and stole two bases. Grabowski graduated from Berlin High School in 2014 and was an All-State and allconference player.

Student-athletes solidify college plans By Ashley Kus The Citizen
Seniors athletes at Berlin High School signed onto their futures in Division I and Division II college sports Thursday morning, April 4 as part of national signing day. “It’s been a pleasure to watch you guys excel,” said Jeff Mauri, Berlin’s director of athletics. The student-athletes signed letters of intent to play college soccer and track. Julia Sisti will play D-2 soccer at Stonehill College and Noah Silverman will play D1 soccer at Central Connecticut State University. “He tied a school record for most goals in a game,” said Sal Parafati, boys soccer coach, about Silverman. Girls coach Katie Amenta praised Sisti for her accomplishments throughout her high school career.

“Everyday; pre-season, during season, postseason and the interstate tournament, she was ready to go,” Amenta said. Alexa Kavarsky and Nikki Xiarhos signed on to compete in Division I track at Sacred Heart University and Bryant University, respectively.
Steve Soucy, track coach, cited the parents as the biggest supporters of the athletes. “There’s lots of reasons why you guys are here and one of the big reasons that doesn’t always get recognized are sitting in front of you — the parents,” he said. “The amount of travel that we’ve done with track, all over New England.”

Soucy also thanked Mauri, in his second year as athletic director, for formally recognizing signing day. “This wasn’t always done,” Soucy said. Last year seven athletes signed onto college teams.

EDITORIAL
Obituary
Drive now, text later Roughly three-quarters of Americans own a smartphone. And the prevalence of these and other handheld devices has led to some problems, notably, distracted driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,450 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2016. Some more scary numbers from the NHTSA: At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, and five seconds is the average time one's eyes are off the road while texting. When traveling at 55 miles per hour, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field.
A lot of damage can be done in that short span. For that reason, during April — Distracted Driving Awareness Month — police departments across the state are doing their part to keep people focused behind the wheel. “It’s becoming a big issue,” Plainville Police Sgt. John Quilter told the Record-Journal. Last April, Plainville officers issued 123 tickets for cell phone violations. This month, Plainville cops are back at it. “During this enforcement period, officers will be ticketing anyone who is texting or on their phone while behind the wheel,” Quilter said. “The bottom line is if you text and drive, you will pay.” Connecticut law prohibits the use of any handheld mobile device while operating a
Robert Neil Brown Sr.
vehicle, and drivers age 16 or 17 cannot use mobile devices at any time, even hands-free, while driving. If safety isn't a good enough reason to leave hand-held devices alone while driving, police hope that the fear of getting hit in the pocketbook will do it. In Connecticut, fees for distracted driving offenses are some of the highest in the nation. Under the state's cell phone and texting law, violations involve heavy fines, ranging from $150 for a first offense, to $300 for a second violation, and $500 for each subsequent violation. The message from law enforcement is simple and important: When driving, that’s all we should be doing. Certainly that text can wait. — Originally published in the Record-Journal

Peter Oakley, lead cobbler at Old Sturbridge Village Museum, and Richard Eckert, lead tinsmith, visited Berlin Historical Society Museum recently. Eckert contacted the museum with a research request that prompted a visit to view the museum's extensive collection of tinware and tinsmith tools. Berlin is considered the epicenter of the tin industry. The Irish immigrant Pattison brothers arrived in town in 1838 and soon introduced
the lightweight, shiny material to a populace who only knew heavy pewter, iron, wood and earthenware. The Pattisons created pots, cups, plates, boxes, candle holders and trays that became so popular, many other tin shops sprang up in town. The tin industry's sudden growth led to its marketing by the first “Yankee Peddler,” an 18th century traveling salesman, who eventually became the town's symbol. — Berlin Historical Society

with a feasibility and needs assessment.
The church, which has about 300 active members, is in the process of updating and enlarging the parish hall and adding parking and accessibility.
Hall said people outside the parish have contributed to the project with former members donating from as far as Texas. “It’s gotten a very positive response,” he said.
Built in 1774, the church hasn’t seen any major changes since the dedication of the parish hall in 1954. The house next door was built in the 1950s and purchased by the church several years ago after the owners, the Mangan family, died.
The church has been part of the community for hundreds of years and existed when Berlin was part of Farmington. In order to obtain permits for the project, the church needed the original deed to the property which was eventually found in Farmington.
Until recently, the house has been used for youth group meetings and other church functions. As part of fundraising campaigns, parish members were allowed to retrieve items from the house before demolition in exchange for a contribution to the project.
“They can offer more to the community now,” said Chris Edge, the town’s director of economic development. Edge said the church’s annual events like the summer Festival on the Hill and Winter Night in Bethlehem attract many local and out of town residents. “It’s a great sign they’re very embedded in the community,” he said.
So far the church has raised more than half of the budgeted $1.9 million expansion cost. The process started over a year and a half ago
