Children read ‘Tails of Joy’ to therapy dog By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen Volunteer Kerry Lurate and her dog Jesse, a black labrador, sat on a fleece blanket surrounded by children’s books about dogs in the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library playroom. “You can sit as close to Jesse as you want,” Lurate said to 10-year-old Tyler Fushino. “Don’t worry she’s used to it.” Tyler sat down as Jesse sniffed and gave him kisses. He began to read “Wacky Wednesday” by Dr. Seuss, a book he picked out from the library’s collection, as Jesse listened next to his lap. When Tyler finished, he smiled at the dog. The library hosted a Tails See Read, page 6

A structure that allows fish to swim around a dam in East Berlin has been in the making for 20 years, according to Steve Gephard, supervising fisheries biologist for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The structure is finally complete and is called The StanChem Dam Fishway, since it is located on the company’s property. “We like to remove dams if possible,” Gephard said. “That is best for the river and for the fish, but often dam owners need the dams and won’t agree to removal. This is the case for StanChem since the company

additional habitat, which is huge by our standards,” Gephard said. “More habitat means more young fish, and more young fish means more adult fish back to the river in three to five years. They spend that time in the ocean maturing.”

The start of a golf season — always a busy time for a head professional — was even more hectic for Timberlin’s Marc Bayram this time around. March 5, three weeks before the local course opened for the year, Bayram and his lady, Kat Marie, welcomed a son into the world, Marc Warren. “So needless to say, the start of the 2013 golf season has been a busy one,” the proud father said. One would think the winter months in Bayram’s Timberlin office would be lonely, quiet ones for the head pro. But that is not the case. “The great thing about my off-seasons at Timberlin is that no matter what, when I go in, I always get visitors,” Bayram said. “Whether it is Remzi (Asani) from the restaurant, my Golf Shop staff, or customers just stopping in to say hello, I never seem to get lonely when I go in to get work done in the offseason.”

uses the river water behind the dam for fire protection.” The StanChem Dam Fishway is the only fish-passage structure in the Mattabesset River watershed, but it is one of over 60 in Connecticut. This is part of a statewide effort to restore fish runs in Connecticut streams. “It has been planned, designed, and built by the Connecticut River Watershed Council, The Nature Conservancy, and my program with DEEP,” he said. “Of course, all with the cooperation of StanChem, which will own the fishway.” The fishway is not yet opened since it is too early for fish to migrate, according to Gephard. Sally Harold, Con-

servancy Connecticut director of Migratory Fish Projects, has scheduled a dedication/opening for May 9. It will be operated until late June or early July, when the fish runs end, and it will be shut down until next year. Although StanChem’s President Jack Waller owns it, Gephard said, his staff will monitor and operate the fishway and compile data on fish that use it. The Mattabesset River has runs of migratory fish — American shad, alewife, blueback herring, sea lamprey and eels, to name a few — but the dam on StanChem’s property stops them. “By installing this fishway, we will provide these fish with access to more than 50 miles of

Town establishes non-lapsing BOE account to help fund proposed full-day K By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen

In 2010, the Connecticut legislator adopted a statue that permits towns to establish a non-lapsing account and to deposit unexpended funds from the prior year’s education budget into the account. The statue allows the Board of Education, with approval of Town Council, to carry over unspent funds from its operating budget to a non-lapsing account to be used for education-related expenditures. During a recent meeting, Town Council voted to establish a non-lapsing BOE account. Town Manager Denise McNair said the amount that can be deposited cannot exceed 1-percent of the prior year’s education budget “This would be done instead of returning unspent

funds to the General Fund balance,” McNair said. “The account may or may not be funded on a yearly basis.” BOE President Gary Brochu requested for Town Council to establish the account in order for the board to fund the one-time expense of renovating kindergarten classrooms for full-day K, if the proposed program goes through. Administrators of the Berlin public school system are anticipating the implementation of the all-day program for the start of the next school year in September. According to Director of Business Operations Roman Czuchta, the BOE has an estimate of $323,000 to transfer into the non-lapsing account. Every year, the BOE receives financial support from the Open Choice Program for funding Hartford students that attend Berlin

public schools. The BOE anticipated a total of 74 students for the current school year. At a reimbursement of $4,000 per student, plus a bonus, it would have given the school district a total of $311,000, according to Czuchta. “By the time the school year came about and its official enrollment data was available, we actually had 91 students enrolled in the Choice program,” Czuchta said. “That did put us over the 3-percent threshold, which then increased the amount we received for each student from $4,000 to $6,000. The net of that would give us a total Choice Grant for this year, and it’s still anticipated because we don’t have the money in hand yet, of approximately $573,000 and we had committed about $250,000 for various expenditures, leaving us with a bal-

the account. “One of the issues with retrofitting the classrooms is that it has to happen in the summer and, as of now, the Board of Education can’t carry any of its operational funds from year-to-year, nor

Readers’ Poll Here are The Berlin Citizen poll results from last week. We asked: How do you feel about the proposed town budget for fiscal year 2013-2014? I think it’s reasonable; the town was able to keep all services. 20% I think the $3.36 million increase is ridiculous. Some services and/or personnel are not needed in town. 60% It’s fair. Gov. Malloy’s proposed budget is hitting all towns hard. 20% It’s not really a concern for me. 0%

Nicholas Vincent Zoccoli, a member of Berlin Boy Scout Troop 44, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouting. He is the son of Nick and Karen Zoccoli. Zoccoli’s Eagle project entailed clearing and blazing a 1/2 mile hiking trail at Timberlin Golf Course, serving as a connector trail for the Metacomet Loop. More than 300 man-hours were required to clear the trail and build corduroy bridges necessary to navigate the numerous wetland sections. The man-hours included site visits with town officials and the Connecticut Forest and Park Association. Zoccoli joined Troop 44 in March of 2006, crossing over from Cub Scout Pack 13 at Hubbard Elementary School where he earned his Arrow of Light Award. His troop leadership positions included senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, scribe, and troop guide. He was elected to the Order of the Arrow, and has received both Roman Catholic religious awards - Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII - and also earned the BSA 100 Nights and Days National Camping Award, as well as 69 Merit Badges. His scouting experiences included summer camp at Camp Yawgoog Hammonassett, Block Island biking, a 50-Mile Delaware River canoe trip, Lake George, Salem, Mass, West Point, Gettysburg, Medicine Mountain in South Dakota, and a high adventure 70-mile backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Zoccoli is a senior at Xavier High School where he has participated in Cross Country, Ultimate Frisbee, Ryken Service Society, Photography Club, Stewards of Creation, Ski Club, Math Team, and serves as a Big Falcon mentor. He participated in Xavier’s Senior Leadership Institute and is an active member of the National Honor Society, National French Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society). He was selected as one of two recipients from his high school to receive an Engineering Math and Science Award in 2012. He participated in a week long service project traveling with fellow students and teachers to Copey, Costa Rica, and is currently involved in a senior service project, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in its Cromwell store. Community reaches out to help local stroke survivor By Amanda Webster Special to The Citizen A fundraiser was held recently in Meriden for Berlin resident Terry Grant, who suffered a stroke last year. Now he is on his way to making a full recovery. Grant suffered from a stroke on Oct. 15 last year

when a torn blood vessel created a blood clot in the back of his brain. Since then, Grant has been making a recovery but with some restrictions still preventing him from going back to work. With Grant out of work, medical expenses have accumulated over the past several months.

“Financially it’s tough, but we keep making it by,” Grant’s wife Robin said. Robin has been staying home in order to take care of her husband and help him with different types of therapies that are helping him make a recovery. “It’s a great thing that I’ve been home to take care of

Earth Day is a time to reflect on the environment and celebrate Mother Earth by helping to keep it clean and thriving for the future of today’s generation. Come out and volunteer for the Berlin Litter Committee’s annual “Spring Litter Clean-up Day.” When the snow begins to melt and the sun begins to shine, take some time to look around the sides of the roads; litter is everywhere. Volunteers are needed, and it only requires a couple of hours out of the weekend to make a difference in the community. The Berlin Litter Committee is seeking ambitious volunteers, local organizations, church groups, boy scouts, girl scouts, and residents to come out and give us a hand. Last year at this time the committee had 61 volunteers, and collected 73 bags of trash, eight tires, and various other items. One person can make a difference. The only requirement is to show up. Bags, gloves, and reflective vests will be provided. We will meet in the front parking lot of the Ocean State plaza on Webster Square Road. The event will take place on April 20 (raindate April 21), from 9 a.m. to noon. It is recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants to avoid poison ivy. The areas to be covered are: Webster Square Road, Spruce Brook Road, Middletown Road, Christian Lane, Deming Road, Farmington Avenue, Four Rod Road, Kensington Avenue, Beckley Road, Berlin Street, and other areas. The couple is active members in their church, Victory Christian Church, and the members of the congregation have been “incredible” in helping since his stroke, according to Grant “The church has been very supportive, right from the pastor down,” Grant said. “Your perspective really changes with a life-altering event,” Robin said. “You realize where your priorities really are.”

“The dog doesn’t pressure a child to read at a level they are not at yet, which helps the child develop fluency at their own pace,” Lurate said. “It’s relaxing because it’s not a school setting. They aren’t taking a test or being judged or graded on. It just brings a sense of joy and accomplishment to a child when they read to a dog.” Jamie Lamb and Jennifer Scheer said they come to most of the children programs with their sons as a group. “The kids look forward to them, especially when animals are involved,” said Lamb, who attended the program with her 7-year-old Kyle. “It helps motivate them to read and their reading skills really have improved.” With every children program at the library, Scheer said, there are books connected with the activity. At the Tails of Joy event, the three boys read books about dogs to a dog. “Programs like (the Tails of Joy R.E.A.D. event) helps the boys’ self-esteem and it gives them more confidence at school because they interact with other children, and sometimes animals, at the library in a fun environment,” said Scheer, who attended Tails of Joy with her sons

In a recent editorial The Berlin Citizen published by Ryan Frogard, state director for The Nature Conservancy in Connecticut, he said, “the fishway is fitted with wooden baffles to slow the water flow, and the turns in the U-shape were designed to accommodate finicky American shad, which don’t like tight switchbacks.” Fish will be able to swim the Mattabesset River, all the way to the dams in Kensington and along many tributaries. “There is a natural barrier in Kensington by the Sherwood Industries old mill that stopped all fish historically,” Gephard said. “Therefore, we have no plans to build fishways at these dams.” There are many types of fishways. The one on the StanChem complex is called a Denil - named after a French engineer - and Gephard said the structure is a good choice for this dam and fish. “There is an underground counting house with a window in the side of the fishway,” he said. “Our cameras will be able to detect the fish that swim past the window on their way up the

Timberlin Continued from page 1

Still, there’s nothing like opening day. “The start of the season is a very exciting time every year,” Bayram said. Timberlin golfers will notice some changes at the course. For one, rates rose from one to three percent, across the board, from 2012. However, Bayram is quick to point out that prices remain modest. “In my opinion, Timberlin is the best value a customer

will get in the area,” he said. “From start to finish customers get a great golfing experience.” In a change players will be pleased to see, Timberlin cart paths are in the process of being renovated. “There were some areas that needed a bit of a makeover, and also some areas that needed a cart path that did not have it in the past,” Bayram said. “These renovations will give the customer a much smoother ride around the course and also decrease the wear and tear on our golf cart fleet.”

Bayram’s former assistant, Scott Szymanoski, has switched careers, and was replaced by Ryan Leahey. “Ryan is a great player and instructor, not to mention he has very good interpersonal skills,” Bayram said. “Having him on board will undoubtedly help our golf operation experience another successful season.” Just 29 years old, this is Bayram’s third year at Timberlin’s helm. “My experience at Timberlin has been phenomenal,” the pro said. “When I arrived, nobody really knew who I was. Berlin Historical Society to host spring open house By Lorraine Stub

An annual rite of spring, the Historical Society Museum’s reopening takes place on Saturday, April 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Located in the old Peck Library at 305 Main St., Kensington, the museum is packed with antiques and memorabilia representing Berlin’s history. The Spring Open House is an opportunity for the community to gather in an historic building and exchange stories that have identified our community for generations. Admission and refreshments are free, and visitors have a chance to win a DVD of the recent Daniel Day-Lewis

movie, “Lincoln.” Along that theme, we will be serving slices of Abe Lincoln’s favorite cake and other treats. During the off season, we have been working on expanding existing displays, especially those related to Berlin Iron Bridge and to Simeon North’s Mill. The Berlin Iron Bridge Company, with roots back to 1878, was famous for building lenticular truss bridges. Located on the site of what became StanChem on Berlin Street, the company employed hundreds of workers populating the East Berlin section of town. The restoration of these unique bridges often

becomes a community project. To see an example, one need travel only to neighboring Meriden where The Little Red Bridge built in 1891 became the gateway to the Quinnipiac River Trail. There are at least a dozen enduring examples in Connecticut with many others throughout the country often listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum has a collection of bridge plaques, photos and pictures that may well inspire you to visit these bridges in your travels. Berlin Iron Bridge was also known for constructing See Host, next page

Change tax payment date To the editor: Each year I respectfully ask the Town of Berlin to consider changing the “annual” tax payment date to either semiannual or quarterly. I’m sure there are many tax payers in Berlin who find it a hardship to pay their real estate taxes in a single payment for 12 months in advance. The argument that the Town of Berlin invests nearly $60 million of prepaid taxes to reduce the mill rate is somewhat valid, however, it’s our money advanced to the town that earns this income. With interest rates at a new ridiculous low, it is the time to change the system and give the taxpayers of Berlin some respite and respect. William Wixon Berlin

Technology a distraction in school? By Kyle Swartz Special to The Citizen Handheld technology in school offers much for students and staff both. But there is a downside in this increasingly common practice. At a certain point, kids can become so distracted with computerized devices that they lose attention of teachers, and lessons at hand. Area academic districts have rightly begun implementation of various programs which permit youths to bring iPads, laptops and/or smartphones into classrooms. Computer technology has thoroughly proliferated everyday life in recent years. Its beneficial inclusion in schools is only natural. Positives are numerous. Carrying electronic tablets that seemingly contain a library’s worth of written works, kids no longer have to lug around bulky textbooks. For teachers who can weave tech into curriculum, hands-on learning possibilities with these devices are practically endless. In math class, pupils can calculate logarithms and graphs on an

iPad’s calculator function, and then next period in art can finger-paint on the touchscreen. All of information is now but several keyboard clicks away. But abundant capabilities of digital devices also cause their problems in schools. Any teacher is familiar with this next scenario. Presenting a subject to pupils, they recognize some kids as clearly not following along, because these students are engaged with smartphone texting or browsing Twitter on an iPad. Even students who attempt to multitask with handheld technology during class do not give learning their full attention and miss out. Important, then, is for teachers to direct technology usage in classrooms based on personal preferences. There should be parts of lessons in which instructors talk to students and students talk back. Engaging, mentally stimulating discussions become dampened when pupils are preoccupied with digital hardware. Of course, in many inSee Technology, next page

buildings, roofs and jail cells. The company evolved into Berlin Steel, located next to the historic Berlin train station. Meanwhile, we have noted many visitors looking for information about Berlin’s most famous innovator, Simeon North. One of these was Rob Dornfried, a teacher studying at Wesleyan University. After reading articles appearing in The Berlin Citizen last year, he was inspired to learn more about activities at the North Mill and its operations on Spruce Brook from 1790-1812. Rob did extensive research on Simeon North and his contracts with the United States government. Known as the first official provider of U.S. military pistols, North utilized technology he developed for producing interchangeable parts. One of Rob’s goals is to have a plaque placed at the Spruce Brook Bridge to honor Simeon North. It’s something that could well be incorporated into the upgrade design the town is working on for that bridge. We are honored he will join us at the Spring Open House to informally talk about his research. Another expanded exhibit celebrates Mildrum Jewel Co., an East Berlin company famous for making fishing rod mountings, tips and guides. The museum is fortunate to have a collection of

any given day is a matter of teacher discretion. During school there’s a time for tech. But there also arise numerous occasions when staff and students gain by putting away these devices and commence engaging one another academically without digital distraction. Mildrum guides made from rings of polished agate stone and metal. Even if you’ve never cast a line in a stream, you can appreciate the artistry of these guides. The iconic name continued under Benson family ownership and many town residents were employed there during its long history. Yet another new exhibit is a memory case of vintage lunch boxes assembled from a member’s collection. The Historical Society Museum for 20 years has served the community as a place where families and businesses donate artifacts contributing to the collective story of where we came from and how this town has evolved over more than 325 years. Much as a family researches and cherishes its genealogy, discovering the stories of what happened in our town throughout generations fosters a sense of belonging to something more than this moment in time. People feel a deeper connection to the community when they know what happened, when and why. Members of the Historical Society welcome you to be a part of the story. If you are unable to attend the open house, you can visit us most Saturdays, 1 to 4 p.m., April through December, or call us at (860) 828-5114 to learn how to get involved. Lorraine Stub is secretary of the Berlin Historical Society.

This Is No April Fool’s Joke DON’T LET CONNECTICUT OFFICIALS REMOVE YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW FROM THE NEWSPAPER. KEEP PUBLIC NOTICES IN YOUR NEWSPAPER! Pending legislation may remove your right to read public notices in newspapers, moving them from the public domain to government controlled web sites. We’re concerned. And you should be, too. Public notices are an important tool in assuring an informed citizenry. They have helped develop America into a participatory democracy for hundreds of years and where it counts the most: how your tax dollars are spent, how policy is made and how our futures are charted. They are located in easy-to-find sections of your newspaper. And they are fully accessible to everyone - unlike the internet, which is not accessible to everyone.

Less than 10% of the U.S. population views a local, state or federal government website daily, according to the May 2009 release of U.S. Census Bureau, Annual Estimates of Resident Population. This means more than nine out of ten people may never see a given notice. This compares dramatically to the fact that 83% of adults read a community newspaper every week, according to the National Newspaper Association. Furthermore, a public notice printed in the newspaper produces a permanent record. The internet does not, nor does it assure timeliness. And a newspaper is archived for years; not subject to computer crashes and hackers. Newspapers are easily verifiable, fully transparent and represent a secure third party who has nothing to gain from any notice.

Connecticut’s recent ethical lapses shed a glaring light on the full meaning of this problem. It’s like putting the fox in charge of the hen house. Every public notice, which runs in a Connecticut daily newspaper, is automatically uploaded to that newspaper’s web site and CTPublicNotices.org. Newspapers are your watchdogs. Don’t let that role be changed now. Voice your opinion. BASEBALL: As always, expectations are high

SOFTBALL: Locals are young, but determined

By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

BERLIN — Leo Veleas has had a hand in the Berlin High baseball fortunes for 28 seasons and shows no signs of hanging up the cleats He heads into his 26th campaign as head coach with high expectations and a noble perspective – to help the town’s best ballplayers achieve at higher levels. “Sometimes I have a real bad day at work,” he said. “There are storm clouds overhead. I was feeling that way a couple years ago as I was driving to Zipadelli Field and it dawned on me. I said, ‘What could be so bad? I’m going to coach baseball.’ “The biggest kick is when we teach and coach, they understand and it shows. They continue on, some to college baseball and some sign pro contracts. That’s what makes me proud.” Thus Veleas, whose grandson Zach is a candidate for the team and will likely play junior varsity ball this year, has plenty of motivation for moving forward. Last year’s 11-11 season was not one of Berlin’s finest. Veleas has guided the Redcoats to five state titles and 10 appearances in the finals. But last year served a very crucial purpose, one that shines a light on the prospects for 2013. “Last year when the team got beat in the second round, we had one senior out there,” Veleas said. “The rest were all sophomores and juniors. This year, I don’t consider the kids we have coming back to be young because they had a lot of experience on the field. It’s all a matter of execution. We just want to go out there, play fundamental baseball and let the chips fall where they may.” Four seniors anchor this year’s squad. Outfielder Mike Baroni, first baseman Jeff Sylvester, pitcher/outfielder Connor Bennett and catcher Jordan Zima will be the backbone. But junior infielder/pitcher Kyle Naples was the Redcoats’ leading hitter last year. Another junior, center fielder Daren Grabowski, is entrenched in the leadoff slot. Veleas sees Mitch Williams as a valuable asset and a top pitcher, particularly if Zima emerges as the every-day catcher.

BERLIN — A solid group of achievers have moved on but Berlin softball coach Jason Pires believes the Redcoats can successfully reload and have something to say about who wins the CCC South. Eight lettermen – six of them starters – have graduated, but the town’s productive youth system continues to pump vitality into the program. “The Little League is doing a very good job of keeping us at a very competitive level,” Pires said. “We’re in a one-year lull with only two seniors, but it’s an aberration. I know there’s a huge athletic group in eighth grade.” The team lacks varsity experience and may be short on power, but Pires has a hunch that the Redcoats can compete for a division crown and do well in the postseason. His reasoning ranges beyond strikeouts, home runs and fielding grounders. “We have a really intelligent group, not experienced, but many are in in the top 10 of their class,” he said. “We teach a concept, they pick it up quickly, so I have high hopes. A lot of coaches in the league think we’ll fall off, but I’m hoping it will be a little less than that.” The most important factor for any softball squad is to have a competent young lady windmilling fastballs and Pires has that in junior Makayla Harris. Harris, who maintained an ERA around 2.00 last year, studies under the legendary pitching authority Roy Early, a Berlin native who has tutored pitchers in the region for generations. “He’s done a lot for us and we recognize him whenever we could,” Pires said. Third baseman Kaitlyn Guild, who started last year as a freshman but missed the postseason due to a concussion, is also a gifted hurler. “She’s my 1-A pitcher. She’s too good to be number two,” Pires said. “She was our clean-up hitter by the

The 2013 BHS baseball team expects good things from Mitch Williams, pictured. “[Williams] pitched six innings last year, can play the infield, has a good arm and he’s versatile,” Veleas said. “We’ll find a spot for him somewhere.” Veleas said he doesn’t like when a player has to catch one day and pitch the next. “It’s kind of tough. Catching is a tough position, so I hope Jordan can get the job done,” he said. Other pitching candidates include Mike Veronesi, who gained some postseason experience last May. Bennett has the most varsity innings under his belt. Kevin Cowperthwaite, Jared Gallagher and David Condon will also vie for innings. As far as other particulars that will define the 2013 season, Veleas needs to see his team play a game or two before he can make final personnel decisions and assign definite positions. He hopes to have scrimmages against Terryville, Wethersfield and Windsor in the books before starting the season at home against RHAM. Looking down the 2013 ledger, Veleas sees all games he can win. “My wife says to me that I can’t expect to win every game,” he said. “I said, ‘How come?’”

end of the year. We really missed her in the tournament.” The 12th seeded Redcoats were one strike away from a 2-0 secondround win over No. 5 Brookfield when the roof caved in. Brookfield tied the game and won it in the eighth inning. “We’ve talked about that game and we’ll keep talking about it,” Pires said. “For those who were active in it, it leaves a really bad taste in their mouth. Our motto this year is to finish.” Harris’ batterymate Amanda Patterson also returns. Patterson is second among Redcoat returnees in batting (.355) and all-important onbase percentage (.459). Guild hit .417 and reached base at a 48 percent clip. Katherine Burek – senior captain and first baseman – is likely Berlin’s primary power source after batting .323, swatting a pair of homers and driving in 15 runs last year. “Defensively we rely on her heavily,” Pires said. “She’s one of the few we have with lots of experience. She’s an incredible captain who takes her leadership role very seriously. She will stabilize the team. She hit two homers in our scrimmage (a 16-1 thrashing of Newington) so that’s a good start.” Pires said having a seasoned battery, good contact hitting and solid defense loom as Berlin strengths. Gaining experience for first-year starters and power hitting are high on his to-do list as the 2013 opener against Tolland drew near. Co-captain Kristina Hagmeier and Courtney Sylvia, both outfielders, provide added experience. Brittany Sullivan will play shortstop, with Alyssa Germano and Annie Asal vying for time at second base. Pires cites Bristol Eastern, Bristol Central and Maloney as the teams to beat in the ultra-competitive CCC South. “All three bring back veteran players and have a great nucleus to compete with the best in the state,” he said.

GIRLS LACROSSE: New coach takes the reins By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

BERLIN — Danielle Tammaro takes over the reins as the third coach in three years for the Berlin High girls lacrosse team with thoughts of reducing the gap between the Redcoats and the stronger clubs in the CCC. “I think we’ll be able to compete more effectively,” she said. “We have a big group of senior leaders who should help make that possible.” Tammaro is impressed with the girls’ basic athletic skills, but said they’ll have to get their stick-handling skills to a more competitive level if they’re to vie with the top teams like defending Class S champion Northwest Catholic for CCC South supremacy. The Goodwin sisters Cassidy and Erin look to establish a bond of familiarity between the midfield and attack zone. Cassidy was Berlin’s lone representative on the All-CCC South team. Tammaro has had precious little time to work with the girls but im-

mediately noticed the athleticism of midfielders Olivia Martino and Bianca Jacques. She was also impressed by Kelly Shea and Morgan Imossi. Brittany Nemphos is viewed as the anchor on defense. Nicole Damboise returns as the starting goalie with Kas Colasanti waiting in the wings. The Redcoats played Tammaro’s former team Pomperaug in a scrimmage that provided favorable first impressions. “It gave me an opportunity to see them in possible roles and where they could fit in,” she said. “While it wasn’t a good result numerically, they showed we have a lot of promise.” In order for Berlin to move its young program forward, coaching stability and fortification of the youth program are essential. Tammaro is beginning to execute her strategy along those lines. “I spoke with the guys in charge of the youth program,” she said. “They probably don’t have enough coaches so I’m going to run a youth coaching clinic to give them some skills they can use.”

GIRLS GOLF: Redcoats eyeing three-peat By Ken Lipshez Special to The Citizen

BERLIN — The 2012 state champion Berlin High girls golf team heads into the new campaign expecting no less than a third straight title. The two primary reasons are because sophomores Julia Kemmling and Ashley D’Attilio make beautiful music every time they drive a fairway, chip onto a green or sink a putt. Kemmling finished second in the state championship June 5 at Orange Hills Country Club as a freshman by carding an 80, two strokes back of Farmington’s Kelly Whaley. She gained a measure of satisfaction in early September when she closed out the Connecticut PGA Junior Tour by shooting a 1-over-par 72 at the Jack Kelly Tournament of Champions in Groton, four strokes better than the third-place Whaley. “We arguably have the best player in the state in Julia Kemmling,”

Berlin coach Jim Barnes said. “Our number two player, Ashley D’Attilio, is one of the 10 best players in the state and is getting better.” Kemmling maintains a 2.4 scoring differential. She earned AllState status, along with All-CCC and All-CCC Tournament accolades. She notched a hole-in-one last year in the match against Simsbury. She tied for fifth in the New England Tournament with a 76. “She’s a budding star,” Barnes said. D’Attilio has a 7.8 scoring differential. She, too, was All-CCC and qualified for the New England Tournament. She finished seventh in the Connecticut PGA championship. “She’s talented and is getting better fast,” Barnes said. “She has AllState potential.” Senior captains Emily Deutsch and Caroline D’Attilio round out See Girls, next page

BOYS LACROSSE: Berlin looking to gain respect By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen BERLIN — The road to respectability in high school lacrosse is a time-consuming trek that requires patience and commitment. In central Connecticut, the sale of lacrosse equipment in West Hartford, Simsbury, South Windsor and Glastonbury has become a cottage industry. Youth leagues have been operating for years and players are well aware of the game’s nuances. Then there’s Fairfield County, where the argument that lacrosse has supplanted baseball as the leading male spring sport is legitimate. When the state championship medals get distributed, they’re almost exclusively headed in that direction. In Berlin, coach Scott Rossi guides the Redcoats into their second year beyond a successful stint as a club team (29-8). He worked hard in the background for almost a decade with a great assist from the leaders of the town’s youth program to bring the team to varsity status. The transition, as expected, was difficult. Rossi said the 4-12 mark the Redcoats accrued last year doesn’t come as a great surprise, and in fact was a bit misleading. The Redcoats dropped six of their first seven games, some of which might have gone the other way had they been played later in the season. “That doesn’t really reflect how good we actually were,” Rossi said.

“We lost [4] games by one or two goals. Once we made the jump to varsity, the boys had to really tighten up their skills and work much harder to possess the ball. With a year under our belts, the boys will come out of the blocks with more confidence.” Offensively, the Redcoats look to senior attacker Nick Mangiafico to finish. If Tyler Bouchard was imposing as a 6’5, 220-pound tight end for the football team, he’s at least that as a long-stick middie. He joins Greg Buck to give Berlin strength in the midfield. Jordan Kradas and Ben Tomascak flank Mangiafico up front. Cam Criniti starts in the midfield. The defense is anchored by Anthony Duong, Alex Ott and Wojtek Zak. Matt Cole starts in goal. “This season we’ll be faster and far more proficient with the ball,” Rossi said. “The boys have been working hard during the off-season to get stronger and faster and it shows. Many of them are now playing with club teams during the offseason as well. This has helped tremendously with their confidence and style of play. Taking more reps and keeping their sticks in their hands has really made a difference.” Rossi sees defending CCC East champion Farmington and an upand-coming RHAM squad as the teams to beat. “If we want to qualify for the state tournament and compete at that level, we have to be able to beat the better teams in our own conference,” Rossi said.

BOYS GOLF: New-look team poised to thrive By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen BERLIN – The Berlin High boys golf team that sashayed through the CCC South in 2012 with nary a blemish was wiped clean by graduation. While that may persuade some coaches to speak of rebuilding, John Line isn’t among them. When you’ve won better than 88 percent of your matches in a town with multiple golf courses and a program that keeps on giving, you just keep the line moving. Captains Ryan Marquis and Nick

Martino step up to the tee, representing a team that Line describes as having character, humility and is teamoriented. Geoff Magisano, Austin Forauer, Chris Samiotis and Brian Bostrom are also eager to contribute. “We are the team to beat in the CCC South and will contend for a Division II championship, but are not favorites by any stretch of the imagination,” Line said. “None of the players has played an entire slate of varsity golf.”

BOYS TRACK: Coach is cautiously optimistic By Ken Lipshez The Berlin Citizen

which prevented him from qualifying for states,” Hanbury said. “He looks poised for a successful season.” In Nathan Strain, Hanbury has a thrower he feels can rank among the league’s best in the discus. Tirinzoni and Kevin Main have shown promise and McClarty is experimenting with the javelin. “We’re hoping for a surprise or two in the javelin and shot put,” Hanbury said. “We have several good athletes who can perform in those events, and require only time and opportunity to develop their potential.” Hanbury describes Mike Pomian as a “gritty, allaround sprinter” and “a valuable relay team mem-

ber.” He runs the 400, 200 and both sprint relays. Pole vaulter Fazli Bozal is working hard toward state meet

qualification. In addition to throwing, Main will run the 1,600 and the 4x800 relay.

Girls

on Barnes’ preseason list is a No. 5 golfer, but candidates abound. A dozen or so underclassmen are competing for the slot. “We have some raw talent and seven new freshmen out for the team, but not much proven experience beyond our first four players,” Barnes said. Berlin shot a 348 as a team in the state championship, seven strokes better than rival Farmington.

Continued from page 25 Barnes’ top four. Deutsch has an 8.3 scoring differential and made the All-CCC Tournament team. “She has all the shots but needs to put everything together to reach full potential,” Barnes said. Caroline D’Attilio has a 10.6 scoring differential and was All-CCC in 2011. The only question mark

BERLIN – Strength in the sprints and the jumps should carry coach Richard Hanbury’s Berlin boys track team as it strives to improve on last year’s numbers. “In both areas we have quality athletes who can win their events against many teams,” said Hanbury, who guided the Redcoats to a 7-3 record. “I expect us to be a top-three team in the CCC South this season, but we have a lot of work to do.” Captain Matt Kall personifies the Redcoats’ potency. He qualified for the Class MM meet last year in the 100- and 200-meter dashes as well as the long jump, and

also ran with the 4x100 relay team. Mike Tirinzoni was the second-leading sprinter last year and will help out in throwing events. The Redcoats’ middle-distance suffered a big hit with the loss of Connor Hilbie to graduation. “He was a sure thing in the 1,600 and 3,200 at every meet,” Hanbury said. Brendan McClarty will do his best to fill Hilbie’s role with help from James Dwyer. Toby Hull will fill up the stat sheet if he can regain his health. Hanbury said he’s the team’s lone hurdler and will also compete in the triple jump. “He’s coming off an injury-plagued junior year,

Line said Marquis, Martino and Magisano possess varying degrees of steady play, confidence and improvement. “We look to [Marquis] for leadership and positive attitude,” the coach said. “[Martino] has improved every year. If that is true this year, he will be mentioned often in news stories. Geoff quietly posts a good number. Steady and confident, he takes care of business.” Line looks forward to Forauer’s play with great anticipation. “He has the most upside on the team. He might be AllState before he graduates, either this year, next year or both. He has the mental makeup and the drive,” Line said. Samiotis hits a long ball and Line looks forward to seeing how much his overall game has improved. Bostrom, he said, also has great mental approach to a game that requires such acuity. Above all, Line sees a splendid time for a group whose company he genuinely enjoys. “They are fun to be around and a coach’s dream as far as discipline is concerned. Gentlemen, all of them,” he said. “They encourage each other to do better and don’t put undue pressure on each other.”
