Morelli to leave Town Council By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen
Deputy Mayor Steve Morelli, Democrat, will sit for the last time in a Town Council meeting as a councilmember July 24. He will resign the council, close his law practice and take a position in state government. Morelli was appointed by Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy to sit on the Worker’s Compensation Commission, a quasi-judicial commission which handles the compensation law in the state. “Stephen Morelli was appointed to the Workers’ Compensation Commission due to his extensive experience

to ensure that workers injured on the job receive prompt and fair payment of their lost wages and related medical expenses, and I believe that Mr. Morelli will be a valued member of the commission.” The 16 person commission seeks to ensure injured workers receive the payments of lost work time benefits and attendant medical expenses, according to the commission’s website. Commission-members hold hearings and mediate disputes between employees and their employers. Mayor Adam Salina has worked with Morelli for See Morelli, page 16
After 15 years, cabaret theater has regional draw By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen
On a Wednesday night in July, the cast from the Connecticut Cabaret Theater
gathered to practice their upcoming production, All Shook Up. The rock musical, featuring music of Elvis Presley, is part of the theater’s 15 anniversary season.

Matthew Marrero sings with the rest of the Connecticut Cabaret Theater troup in a recent practace.
“We’re known as the best little secret in central Connecticut,” said Kris McMurray, artistic director and owner of the theater. For 15 years, the theater has performed musicals and plays in a cabaret setting at its 33 Webster Square Road location. After warming up, the actors dressed in black start running through musical numbers. The piano and drums start in. The actors broke into a Broadway version of Elvis’ song All Shook Up. Pawel Jura, the music director for the troupe, sat at the piano and deftly tapped out the rock beat. He holds a master’s degree from Julliard Music School. “A well I bless my soul,” they sing, “What’s wrong with me? I’m itching like a man on a fuzzy tree. Skateboarders want a park like East Haddam’s, shown above and currently under construction. Modern skate parks can look beautiful, they said.
Skateboarders share vision for skate park By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen Five skateboard park supporters slipped into the Town Council meeting July 10. While they sat and listened, military veterans from the American Legion and the VFW spoke. The Town Council held a discussion at its last meeting about the proposed skate park on Massirio Drive. The veterans were against a park because they think a skate park is inappropriate with a veteran’s memorial close by. While the skaters did not speak at the meeting, they see big potential for the site If done right, a skate park could draw extreme-sport athletes from across the state and the nation, they said speaking to The Berlin Citizen after the meeting. Skateboarders said the problems the town anticipates—graffiti, for example—would never arise if the town builds the park
right. A proper skate park these days, according to Adam Valedaserra, who works at the Cutting Edge in Berlin, is “one that flows.” “They’re usually works of art,” he said. “If you were telling me they were building Newington (skate park), I’d vote ‘no.’” The Newington skate park is a pre-cast park. The half-pipes and ramps were molded off site and then simply dropped into place. It’s not the ideal place to skate, the skaters said. If Berlin built another Newington-style skate park, “I wouldn’t even go,” skater Rocco Toce said. Modern parks are things of beauty, Valedaserra said. The park would be cast in concrete in one piece and the builders would finish the surfaces by hand. Some parks have tile inlaid into the surface. He offered that the park could be designed to someSee Skate, page 7

BOE vacancies
The Berlin Board of Education has four openings for candidates on the ballot in November. The positions available are three, three-year terms and a two-year term to fill the remainder of an appointed position. The Berlin Board of Education is a nine member, non-partisan board. Each member is elected to a three year term and the terms are staggered so that each year three positions are up for election. Candidates are not nominated by political parties. All Berlin voters are eligible to appear on the ballot, and candidates appear on the ballot without a political party designation. Potential candidates must obtain a petition form from the Town Clerk’s office, collect signatures of 131 Berlin voters, and return the completed petition by Sept. 5. Petition forms will be available Aug. 1. For more information, call the Town Clerk at (860) 8287035. Board of Education press release
Berlin man crashes motorcycle for second time, dies On July 14, Cardinale, 22, lost control of his Yamaha motorcycle and crashed into the metal guide rail on the left-hand side of Route I-84, according to the state police accident summary. Cardinale had traveled one fifth of a mile past exit 39A in Farmington when he lost control. Despite wearing a helmet, the collision killed Cardinale. His bike, a 2012 Yamaha YZFR1, was totaled. When David Cardinale lost control of his motorcycle for the second time, Carl Oberg was not there to save him. In 2011, Cardinale was in another motorcycle accident in which he lost his left leg. He totaled a Yamaha near Exit 28 on Route 9 in New Britian, according to the accident report. According to the News Times, a paper out of Danbury, Carl Oberg, witnessed Cardinale crash. Oberg stopped and applied a tourniquet to Cardinale’s heavily damaged left leg. The News Times reported if Oberg hadn’t stopped, Cardinale would have died in four minutes. Connecticut state police said if anyone saw Cardinale’s accident, please call State Police Troop H in Hartford at 860-534-1000.

The ballad of Depot Crossing By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen On Saturday, June 30, Depot Crossing changed hands in a foreclosure sale. No one—no developer, entrepreneur or builder— came and placed a bid on the property. Thus, the ownership of the building went
from local developer Ray Kavarsky to New England Capital Group, according to Michael Mingione, manager of the group. Was the foreclosure of this property—a property Mayor Adam Salina called “a cornerstone of the town’s Farmington Avenue revitalization effort” in 2008—a sign of the
economy in the town? “I’m not sure,” said Mingione. “It’s difficult to get financing for a commercial property with no tenants.” While town officials were sorry to see the building foreclosed and a local developer facing difficult times, they were relieved to see that work could start again on the Tyvek-wrapped building which sits across the street from the train station. “I think the clock is going to start again,” Salina said. The Berlin Citizen tried to reach former owner Ray Kavarsky for comment for
this story. Family members confirmed health reasons prevented Kavarsky from speaking to the paper. In 2008, Salina welcomed the new business and Kavarsky was optimistic about completing the space. “We hope to complete the building and have the first businesses move in by the end of the year,” Kavarsky told the Citizen then. “… we have commitments from a restaurant, a spa and an office and 4,000 square feet is still available.” But then the economy
dipped. The building went up but was not completed. It sat for about a year before The Citizen asked Kavarsky what was the matter. Rumors were circulating that the project went bankrupt, or he lost tenants or liens were placed on the property. While there was a delay in building and he lost one tenant, “We’re back in business,” Kavarsky told the Citizen. “We were sidetracked and in a holding pattern.”

Concert series aims to educate and entertain Photo by Nikki Sambitsky

A quartet composed of two violinists, a violist and cellist from the New Britain Symphony Orchestra rocked out—classical style—at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library July 11. They played arrangements of Beatles songs such as Hey Jude, Yesterday and A Hard Day’s Night. The concert was just one of the free concerts held in town this summer. For example, Farmington Savings Bank hosted a free concert featuring the band Simply Swing last June. It was the kick-off concert for the bank’s community concert series across the state. “We love to get people moving,” said Vivian LaRosa, Simply Swing’s vocalist. “Our summer audiences can’t sit still. symphonic concerts,” said Nancy Judd, president of the NBSO board. “It’s a big job applying for grants (to fund local performances) but we are keeping classical music alive, and that’s the important thing.” The NBSO’s mission is to present professionally conducted concerts in the hopes of educating, entertaining and enriching the lives of people of all ages and ethnicities in central Connecticut. Judd said the concerts,
which feature non-traditional symphonic music, are presented as a means to spark an interest in the symphony among families, children and senior residents in the towns of Berlin, New Britain and Plainville. During the event, which featured the talents of Steven Tieszen and Meredith Bryant on violin, Amy Jones-Gantkin on viola and Carolyn Engle on cello, the audience was not only treated to symphonic string renditions of some of the more popular Beatles songs, they also were educated on little known facts about the chart-toppers. Southington invites Berlin to drive-in By Julie Sopchak and Daniel Jackson The Citizens
Berlin residents will pay the Southington rate when they go to the Southington Drive-In on July 20. The drive-in, located at 935 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, Southington, has hosted “neighbor nights for area towns all throughout the summer and July 20 is Berlin’s turn. “Residents of the neighboring towns of Bristol, Plainville, New Britain, Berlin, Meriden, Cheshire and Wolcott will be offered admission at the Southing-
ton-resident rate of $10 per carload on their specific neighbor night, starting with Bristol on June 30, the drive-in’s website said. “Welcome neighbors! At sunset July 20, the drive-in will show the movie Free Willy. The family movie, released by Warner Brothers in 1993, tells the story of a boy’s relationship with an Orca whale and his efforts to release him from the aquarium where the owners want to kill the whale, according to imdb.com. The Southington drive-in theater first opened for business in 1953, according The Southington Citizen, but it
closed in 2002. Eight years later, a group of volunteers resurrected the drive-in with the idea of allowing local nonprofits to run the drivein in exchange for a share in the proceeds. Entering its third season, the Southington Drive-In is still on an upward swing as the volunteer organization continues to develop its evening show This year, Drive-In Committee Chairwoman Dawn Miceli said the drive-in will offer “so much more than ever with more of a focus on pre-show entertainment. Since gates open at 6 p.m. and shows don’t start until

200 to 300 kids in Berlin have bought BMX bikes from the store. Len Zielinski spoke in favor of the park. He remembers a park in New Britain honoring veterans, built while the veterans of World War I still lived, that had a wading pool with it, a “living memorial.” “We’ve got passive parks in the center of town. They get little use.” Dave Cyr, the chairman for the Planning and Zoning Commission said the town has developed its town center on the fly for the last 50 to 100 years. But now, he said, the town is using proper

During the meeting, both members of the American Legion and the VFW spoke out against the project. Skateboarding would dishonor the memory of veterans, the veterans said. A passive park would help in respecting that goal. “It’s a great place for our remembrance and reflection,” VFW Commander Brad Parsons, said. Councilmember Stevie Morelli said Veteran’s Park is not the quiet place the veterans say it is. It’s in the center of town, Stop & Shop is right there and a machine shop operates across the way. “This isn’t exactly Arlington Cemetery,” he said. But because the skatepark is controversial now, it will always remain controversial if built at that location, he said. If a skate park was installed in Veteran’s Park, it would be within walking distance of convenience stores and restaurants. “If I was a skateboarder, that site would be perfect,” said Councilmember Eric Bruendorf.
Zack Whitcomb, a skateboarder, said when he skates the park in Willimantic, he often buys as many as three drinks from the convenience store close by. If built well enough, the park could not only draw residents but people from all over the nation. The skaters said towns like Willimantic and East Haddam are gaining national attention because of their parks. Recently, Bristol’s skate park received attention, they said, because Bristol native Stevie Churchill is going to the Xgames for his BMX riding skills. According to skaters, said Churchill said the park in his town allowed him to practice his riding every day. Valedaserra said it’s not just skateboarders who would use this park, but BMX riders. The sales of bikes have matched the sale of skateboards at The Cutting Edge. He estimates that

The Berlin Citizen — Thursday, July 19, 2012
Ballad Continued from page 3
That was in April. By December, Kavarsky was served a summons to court. Court records show months of affidavits, motions for payments, motions for extension of time and court orders. In August 2011, The Citizen wrote a story about the 9/11 memorial in front of the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, the adjacent property to Depot Crossing. In 2010, the fire department traveled to New York City to collect some of the relics of the World Trade Center. They wanted to unveil a completed memorial to the 9/11 victims
by the 10 year anniversary of the attack. Fire Chief Mark Lewandowski told The Citizen then he was waiting for work on Depot Crossing to finish before he finished the memorial so it could look its best. A month before, the court sent a judicial notice setting a date for an appraisal and sale of the property. But Kavarsky was still interested in the property. He told The Citizen then he planned to start work that September and he received permission from the town to build another building on the property. Less than a half a year later, the property was in a different owner’s hands. “It’s difficult,” Salina said.
“I knew the previous owner. And when you look in the community, we’ve got a lot of local developers and local builders. So you never want to see anything happen to one of them that’s going to be a negative.” Mingione said New England Capital Group is just in the beginning stages of taking ownership of the property. It has met with town officials and is exploring what can be done with the property, different options, such as selling it or allowing one tenant partial ownership of the building. He said Depot Crossing could house needed businesses. For example, an urgent care facility could be move into that location. “It’s a prime piece of prop-
erty in a prime location. When it’s finished, it will add some life to the downtown. We really believe that.” While developers did not go to the sale to bid on the property, Town Planner Hellyn Riggins said developers were in her office, looking up the plans for the building. Mingione thinks the developers were trying to get “get a real low-ball price on the property.” Riggins does not think the building is any indication of the economic health of the downtown. “One building does not dictate an entire town,” she said.
Salina said the economic health of Berlin is better compared to the health of other towns. Even in the last six months, several businesses have relocated to Berlin. Khols has put its sign out on the Berlin Turnpike, Fosdick Fulfillment has come to town and Okay Industries, a manufacturing company which makes medical equipment, has recently located here. “All these areas have been vacant for a period of time and now all of a sudden in the last six months they’re being occupied,” Salina said.

fundraisers, especially being a new group,” Sirignano said. “And so this is just a really easy way to get both some awareness in the community about Junior Women’s and also make some money at the same time.” In addition, Southington recently installed a community pavilion at the drive-in, with facilities for concessions and restrooms as well as surround sound. Audience members can hang out there and still get a good view. Miceli said it is common for walk-ins to come and sit on a lawn chair rather than a vehicle. “There’s always a place for everyone,” she said. “No one ever need be turned away.” Gates at the drive-in open at 6 p.m., movie begins at sunset. a bug. I’m in love… I’m all shook up!” An actress shouted out “Slow it down!” but she was drowned out by the singing. As the song ended, the dance formation broke. “Whew!” a few actors said. “That was on speed!” McMurray asked, “How do you think that tempo was?” Jura steps from behind the piano. “The problem was when we started,” he said walking to the group, “The tempo was too slow and we sped it up too much.” The troupe progresses quickly through the numbers. It’s a near finished production. In a few days, the troupe will perform the musical for their subscribers and other theater-goers. Fifteen years ago, Connecticut Cabaret Theater opened its doors to 45 subscribers, people who pay a flat fee to see all five of a season’s productions. Every season, the number of subscribers rise, said McMurray. Currently, 650 people have

Skate park disrespectful
To the editor: The Town Council held an informational session on a skate park for the Berlin Veteran’s Memorial Park. The council will make the final decision since the Parks and Recreation Commission has failed to find a suitable location. The council and Parks and Recreation consider Berlin Veteran’s Memorial Park to be their best location. Unfortunately, this decision lacks the perspective of how Berlin’s veterans have trained, fought and some, sadly, gave with their lives for the freedoms enjoyed by all. Their sacrifice can be felt as you walk the
park and view the monuments. And there will be more monuments as time goes by. Our veterans know of this sacrifice firsthand and use the park to reflect. The skate park should be built elsewhere. It is disrespectful from a veteran’s perspective and diminishes the fine efforts of Berlin’s Economic Development Commission in developing the town green. Brad Parsons Cdr Berlin VFW Post 10732
Put park at Willard To the editor: My thoughts if Berlin must have a skateboard park why not adjacent to the handicapped playground next to Willard Elementary School since the kids from there will be walking distance from school and McGee Middle School? I find that a better spot than near the veterans park since the school already has a paved
lot so less need to make a new lot. This should save the town money and headaches. Jay Ritter Berlin
Veterans, vote no I’m a marine. Although I’m not hard of hearing, I just can’t believe some of the things I have heard. I have recently heard of the addition of a skate board enclosure to the Veterans Memorial Park Now, I’m almost certain the parents of skate board aged youngsters will say I am not about children. I am not against children. I was one once. Truth is, I have grandchildren still in school and a daughter that I supported in her quest to become a teacher. What I am against is having a skate board area put in the same area as a memorial park; one dedicated to veterans no less. It is a place of solitude and reflection. Many of our citizens are

The Berlin Citizen Thursday, July 19, 2012 veterans; World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, the war on terror and the list goes on and on. We have a walkway with engraved bricks leading to the circle of flags. In the middle of the service flags is our national standard for which we fought and many veterans died for. This idea of allowing skate boards in this almost holy area just takes my breath away. I am asking the veterans of Berlin, for that matter any veteran to let it be known that we do not want a skate board park within this Memorial Park. It will sure-
ly bring an element of noise, graffiti and trash not to mention that the skate boarders , not all but certainly some, will certainly rumble across the engraved bricks. In the recent past, a scant few veterans voted against my request to name Papergoods Park as Marine Corps Park. I do hope those same veterans along with The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will act to keeping the Veterans Memorial Park as such. Richard Rampone, Marine Veteran Kensington

As temperatures rise and the days grow longer, the Central Connecticut Health District reminds residents to be mindful of safe practices during summer fun. Safety in and around water is key, as families begin to travel to pools and beaches to escape the heat. When swimming, an adult should always supervise children in or near water. Drowning can occur in minutes and in just a few inches of water. Whenever an infant or toddler is in or near water an adult should always be within an arm’s length providing “touch” supervision. When boating, everyone should wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket. Consider taking a boating safety course, and re-

eight years on the town council. Through that time, the two men got to know each other. Salina called Morelli a “loyal friend.” The task of sitting on council, doing “the work of the people,” is a serious task but Morelli was able to keep the task of running the town light with his humor, Salina said. “Steve is defiantly a unique personality on the council,” he said. “He’s very thought-provoking while adding humor and having a legal background is always helpful.” While Salina said the change is happening quickly and many things need to be talked about in regards to the change, the council is headed toward their August break, which will give the council time to adjust. Councilmember Rachel Rochette will be named deputy mayor in Morelli’s place, Salina said. Because the change is hap-
pening mid-year, someone will be appointed to fill her councilmember position. Morelli first sought this position last election when he met with Malloy and expressed his interest in the sitting on the Worker’s Compensation Commission. He discussed his qualifications and skills with the governor. “At that time, there were no openings that were perceived coming up in the near future,” Morelli said. But a seat on the council opened and Morelli was confirmed at a hearing July 10. He was waiting until he knew he had the position before he started to close down his law practice. When he takes his oath of office, he will have to resign from Town Council. For the past 20 years, Morelli has specialized in employment law. “This will kind of be an extension of that. And there are certainly some other aspects of it; I’ll have a little bit of a learning curve.” There are two moments Morelli remembers while working on the council. He
fondly remembers working with former-councilmember Bob Dacy. “He had so much energy and enthusiasm,” he said. The second was the town’s process in acquiring Pistol Creek. The developer was looking on changing the property’s zoning from conservation land to something else, said Morelli. Salina couldn’t go to Hartford to testify before the committee there, so Morelli went. He convinced the committee not to make the change. Pistol Creek was going to be turned into a 792 unit development. The school system would never have absorbed the additional students, Morelli said. “We’ve done a very good balancing act in moving Berlin forward without breaking the bank,” Morelli said. He thanked Salina and Berlin for the time he had serving on the council. “It’s another opportunity to learn something new and recharge my battery,” he said. While 16 members hear

Local company tees up golf iPhone application By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
An idea hatched by a local businessman some three years ago has come to fruition: The CTGolfer mobile application, a one-stop destination for Connecticut golfers, was launched May 23. “As far as we know, there’s no other app that does this specifically for the state of Connecticut. There are apps out there that provide some type of golf course information, but they don’t do it to the scope and extent that we do,” said Robert Samek, owner of Netminder Communications, Inc., the Kensington media company behind CTGolfer.com, and its mobile
companion. Samek designed the application, while fellow Kensington resident, golf professional, Brent Paladino did the data base programming. Available on the iPhone for 99 cents, the application provides information and directions for all public and private golf courses in Connecticut, as well as driving ranges and golf retail shops. Course information includes details on tee times, course design, statistics, yardages, slope, rating, practice facilities, clubhouse amenities and staff – and the info is compiled the old-fashioned way. “You can’t just sit at your desk, make phone calls and expect to get people to coop-
erate,” said Samek, who brought CTGolfer.com online in the mid-90s.
So, once a year, for the past 16 years, Samek tours the state, making stop after stop, inquiry after inquiry. “I visit every golf course – public and private – and driving range around the state,” he said. “It takes about four or five weeks of driving and visiting with the pros and the owners.” Another feature of the CTGolfer website/mobile application is a comment section, where golfers may weigh in on courses they have played, or read what others had to say. In an attempt to keep criticism constructive, Samek does not allow vicious comments to be posted. Also, writers must stand behind their words.
“We treat comments just as a Letter to the Editor,” said Samek. “We feel that, especially when dealing with businesses whose reputations are at stake, people need to back up their comments with their name.” According to Samek, sales of the CTGolfer application have been steady, and he expects that trend to continue. Currently, Samek is seeking funding and investors to expand the application, and for the creation of a mobile golf game. “We’re going to keep adding features and keep growing this as we go,” he said. “It’s really exciting.”

Fifth annual GE/Petit race draws record crowd By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen The fifth annual General Electric 5K Road Race benefitting the Petit Family Foundation, held Sunday in Plainville, had a different feel than did the previous four installments; a more celebratory, lighter feel. Perhaps it was that the two men responsible for the deaths of Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela Petit now sit on death row. Or it may be that Dr. William Petit, the lone survivor of the Cheshire home invasion, has found love again, and is engaged to be married. For whatever reason, the vibe surrounding the 2012 GE/Petit race was a joyous one, and Dr. Petit had a spring in his step. Addressing the more than 3,000 runners and walkers before they set out on the 3.1-mile challenge July 15, Dr. Petit said: “I really just want to thank everyone for being here today. This is the biggest crowd ever. I want to let you know that you’re all

ing to give it a go. I don’t know when I’m going to finish, but for all the runners; I’ll see you at the finish line.” New London’s Stephen Pretak bested the field that hazy morning. He navigated the course in a record time of 15:27, out-doing the runner-up, Terryville’s Nico Greco, by six seconds. Jon Krell of Farmington rounded out the top three (15:56). Berlin was represented by a sizeable contingent. Paul Kusek (56th) was the first local to finish. He was followed closely by fellow resident James Dwyer (61st). Complete race results are posted at plattsys.com. Terry Putaski of Bristol has run the GE/Petit 5K every year. He said one thing brings him back: Dr. Petit. “It’s a tragic event that happened to him, and in a small way I wanted to show support every year, to let him know that he’s not forgotten,” Putaski said, adding: “I’m very happy
that he has found somebody. It looks like they’re going to get married this year, and I’ll tell you, I couldn’t be happier for him.” Sara Dill, of Glastonbury echoed that. “Good for him,” said Dill, who at seven months pregnant, walked the course. “There comes a point when you do have to move on. With an event like this, he’s always going to remember, but he needs to be happy.” Dill’s husband, Steve, ran the 5K. “It’s really encouraging to see everyone get together to support the cause,” he said. “It was touching a few years ago to see the event put together.” Ken Oberhausen of Avon has volunteered at the 5K since its inception. He mans a tent where water, orange juice and bananas are distributed. “It’s a great cause for a great family,” said Oberhausen, a GE employee. “Since its inaugural year it has really grown to be one

Tough season comes to a close Fall ball sign-ups Aug. 3 By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
At press time, Berlin Post 68 had six games remaining on its schedule; but for all intents and purposes, the season was over for the local American Legion baseball team. With a Zone 3 record of 714, no matter how Berlin fared down the stretch, the young club will fall well short of qualifying for the upcoming state tournament play-in, making its final
games more like glorified practices. Post 68 was mathematically eliminated from postseason contention last week. “We’re kind of in playingit-out mode right now,” Berlin skipper Rob Manzo said Monday. “We’re taking a look at some of the
younger guys for next year. A couple of guys moved on from the team towards the end of the year, so we’re a limited group right now and just kind of playing it out and seeing what we have for next year.” Despite its youth, Post 68 was very much in the hunt for a state tournament spot until it dropped three straight to
Coming in August...
Middletown in early July. The locals had trouble regaining their footing after that. “It’s been an uphill battle the second half of the season,” Manzo lamented, adding that close games seldom went his team’s way this summer. “We’ve had some opportunities. We lost six zone games by one run. A lot of our games have been by two runs or less. It’s just been one of those years. A couple of hits here and there and it could have been a different story. It just didn’t happen.”
Berlin has missed out on the postseason before under Manzo’s watch, but never in his 15 years at the helm had Post 68 lost 14 zone games in a season. “It’s been a trying year,” Manzo said. “There’s been, unfortunately, a lot of losses. How do you deal with that? It’s been a learning experience with the players and with the coaching staff. You kind of see who’s really committed to the program moving forward.”

Brandon Ralph, pictured, right, became the first Berlin High School boys lacrosse player ever selected to compete in the Connecticut Senior All-Star Game. The CHSCA all-star games were played June 18 at Sheehan High School in Wallingford. ‘Brandon was selected to play in the North-South game as a long stick midfielder, but he really could have played well at any position,’ remarked BHS boys lacrosse coach Scott Rossi. Ralph turned in a solid effort that day. He scooped up two ground balls, dished out an assist, and recorded a shot on goal. This past season was the BHS boys lacrosse teams’ first as a varsity program, and Ralph played a major role in keeping the Redcoats competitive. Ralph will continue his career at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where he will play hockey and lacrosse. ‘Lyndon State is gaining a tremendous player in Brandon,’ said Rossi, ‘I know he will have an immediate impact for them on the field.’

They’re some Tough Mudders
Continued from page 18 To the players that toughed it out this summer, Manzo gives a tip of the hat. “The guys that are still there, it says a lot. It takes a lot of character for them to stick it out,” the veteran coach said. “They’re still playing every game hard when there’s really not much to play for now except for trying to improve your baseball skills. So that’s kind of a positive.”

All proceeds from the GE/Petit race go to the Petit Family Foundation, which honors the memories of the Petit women by benefiting causes close to their heart. “July 23 will be the fifth anniversary of a very tragic event when we lost Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela,” Dr. Petit said in his pre-race comments. “I know they’re looking down upon you and thankful for everything you all do.”
Madison Marolda of Berlin won her age division at the GE/Petit race. The 12year-old McGee Middle School student completed the course in a time of 26:20.

When the first iPhone was unveiled in 2007, Samek saw an opportunity to bolster the CTGolfer brand. “I became enamored with it,” he said of the smartphone. “I saw the vast potential of mobile apps, and kept in the back of my mind that this is something that would be nice to have CTGolfer be part of.” Before long, Samek teamed with Paladino, a former Connecticut State Golf Association Player of the Year, who had recently graduated from The College of William & Mary with a degree in computer science. Per Paladino’s suggestion, the information on CTGolfer.com was compiled into a data base. Samek said that move “opened up a whole realm of possibilities.” “Basically, that data base was what made the app ultimately possible,” he added.
“Brent did a great job of putting this all together.” Samek knows the idea may sound far-fetched, but he wonders if Berlin could one day become a leader in high tech. He said “wouldn’t it be great if the town could attract and nurture a community of app developers and mobile programmers”

Mayor Adam Salina said. “I’m interested in creating a park that’s interesting for everybody,” he said. At first, the park was simply named the Town Center Green but then its name was changed to Veteran’s Park, the mayor said. While the site may or may not be the future site for the skate park, the town has some other places in which to build the facility. Salina said the town recently acquired the Pistol Creek property and it could be a site for a future skate park.
