Cross country wants Pistol Creek paths to stay By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen
During its Dec. 4 meeting, Town Council designated the Pistol Creek property, on Spruce Brook Road, to be used principally for recreational and open space uses. Paul Griswold, head coach for the McGee Middle School cross country team, and his students attended the meeting to voice their opinions
about the development of Pistol Creek. Griswold said there are lots of benefits to leaving the property as a casual recreational area because, “it’s just a beautiful area where residents can enjoy the natural wildlife” that inhabits the land. He said cross country used to train and host meets at Sage Park, but safety became an issue when other athletic

groups held practices at the same time. Since the town acquired the Pistol Creek property, cross country uses its cart paths. “Now we have a safe haven,” he said. “At Sage, we had to dodge cars that were coming in for kids’ soccer practices. We were ignored, even though we had parents with signs that read ‘slow down.’ They actually pulled onto the grass of the park as meets were going on. I saw this as a very dangerous situation and I don’t want that to happen with Pistol Creek.” A plan for a playing field complex for Pistol Creek, developed by the Berlin youth soccer and lacrosse organizations, was brought to council for approval at its November meeting. Mayor Adam Salina said he recognizes a need for more athletic fields in town for different groups including field hockey, soccer, baseball and lacrosse. Although the plan was not approved, Salina said it was a kick starter for near-future discussions and meeting to develop a master plan for the Pistol Creek property. Salina, along with other council members, said they would like to see a plan that incorporates the needs of different athletic groups, while also keeping the rural characteristics and cart paths for cross country and public use. Over the years, the town has acquired different properties that are not being used due to land contamination issues, such as the property in front of Sage Park. Salina said the town is currently working to fix the problems. “What I think we want to start doing is have that long See Property, page 8

Biscuit, adopted by Berlin resident Barbara Ritchie 10 years ago, was provided with a doggie wheelchair when she developed nerve damage in her back legs.
Calendar features local disabled dog By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen Many dogs around the world with unique stories are featured in the 365 Dogs 2013 calendar, but one dog showcased in particular is Biscuit, a rescued dog from town. When Berlin resident Barbara Ritchie, 52, adopted Biscuit from a shelter, the golden retriever/border collie mix was severely underweight. Animal control found her on the streets without a home. “At the time I was working at a dog boarding facility that also housed the Hartford Animal Control dogs,” she said. “I wasn’t really looking for a dog, but there was something about Biscuit that called to me, so I adopted her on the spot and brought her home.” Biscuit was 3-years-old
at the time of adoption and gained a healthy weight in the care of Ritchie and her husband. But years later, Ritchie noticed Biscuit was having trouble with her back legs and a veterinarian said Biscuit had irreversible neurological damage. “She was really dragging her back legs and couldn’t really walk that much anymore,” Ritchie said. “We had to carry her outside and help stand her up to go to the bathroom.” Searching for solutions to help Biscuit’s quality of life, Ritchie and her husband found Eddie’s Wheels in Massachusetts, a company that makes custom wheelchairs for animals with disabilities. “We got her a wheelchair and as soon as we strapped her into that thing, we See Dog, page 6

Legacy of retired Berlin fire chief remembered By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen
Retired Berlin Volunteer Fire Department Chief Edward Haber, 88, passed away at his home, Nov. 30, after a long battle with heart disease. Edward Haber met Jane Ross Goodrich, who would later be his wife, in seventh grade. They wed in 1946 and were married for 66 years. “The family came first — his wife and his two daughters (Patricia and Pamala) and the rest of the family,” Chester Haber said. “Him and I worked hard together. He helped me and I helped him. It was a brotherhood that can never be forgotten or replaced. I miss him.” Chester Haber said his brother leaves behind a legacy in the town and state. He was a founder of the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department in 1942, where he was a volunteer member for 68 years and fire chief and fire Marshall for 33 years. The Berlin firehouse was dedicated to him in 1999.

“He was well liked by everybody because he was a true, honest and hardworking man. He treated the firemen equal and he was well liked by everybody because he was upfront about everything,” Chester Haber said. “They all showed up the day of the funeral. There was a beautiful standoff tribute to him by the fire service in town, especially the Berlin Fire Department.” Haber helped start the Hartford County Fire School where he served as an instructor, served on the committee for the CT Fire Academy and was active in establishing the CT Firemen’s Memorial. He held officer positions in many state organizations including the Hartford County Emergency Plan, Commissioner of Fire Prevention and Control, CT Fire Marshals Association, CT Fire Chiefs Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, New England Association of Fire Chiefs, and the National Fire Protection Association. Town offers tax reduction to ‘sit down’ restaurants
Berlin has a tax abatement policy, last updated in 2004, that allows specific economic development projects a percentage reduction for a fixed amount of years, at the discretion of the town. The program’s purpose is to help encourage continued growth in the community. Under the town policy, projects must involve real property improvements for at least one of the following: office use; manufacturing use; warehouse, storage or distribution use; information technology; and for redevelopment of existing retail properties that involve substantial renovations or restoration of building exte-

During its Dec. 4 meeting, Town Council approved a modification proposed by the economic development committee to add “sit down” restaurants (not fast food establishments) and new retail developments to the tax abatement policy. weren’t even finished buckling her in when she took off,” Ritchie said laughing and smiling as she recalled the memory. “She was like ‘Oh my God, I can walk again.’” Pets are chosen by the uniqueness of their story and/or photo, such as a dog dressed in costume. There is a waiting list. Biscuit is just now being featured, three years after Ritchie submitted a request. No doubt, Biscuit’s story is a heart-warming one. Biscuit is featured on Friday, Sept. 20. John Duggan, of Workman Publishing in New York, said people submit their pets through a form that comes with each calendar. There are five different calendars: 365 Dogs, 365 Cats, 365 Kittens-A-Year, 365 Puppies-AYear, Bad Cats and Bad Dogs.
The 365 Dogs calendar can be purchased anywhere calendars are sold, such as the local Barnes and Noble bookstore or online at Amazon.com. Biscuit proved that disabled dogs can lead happy lives. Ritchie said for a few years Biscuit was able to go for walks, chase the cat around the house and play fetch. Sadly, Biscuit passed away a couple years ago. The neurological damage had spread to her front legs to the point Biscuit could not get up anymore. “I had to wake up in the middle of the night and flip her over, so she didn’t get sores. We had a doggie diaper on her, too, because she started to leak,” Ritchie said. “You know, we don’t want to put her down because her mind’s still there, she was still our dog, but the quality of life wasn’t good and we didn’t want her to suffer. We had to let her go.”

But Ritchie and her husband provided Biscuit with an active and happy life as long as they could. “She loved that wheelchair. That was one of the best things I had ever bought in my life. She was just so happy just walking down the street,” she said. “People would stop and talk to us about it. I would say ‘Well we do it for people, why not dogs?’” Ritchie has now adopted a new dog, a Pomeranian named Molly, from the Humane Society. “There are thousands, millions of dogs out there that need a home and the majority of them are perfectly good dogs,” Ritchie said, adding that she would rather go to a shelter to find a dog than go to a breeder. “These are the ones that really need a home or are specialty dogs that are missing a limb or an eye,” she said. “Most people would pass by these dogs, but I’m a sucker; they have so much love to give.”

range vision for how we want to utilize the properties and where we want to grow. It may be that soccer and lacrosse fields would be better off on one of the other properties in town.” Margaret Morelli, council member, said the town will take into consideration the needs of cross country and wildlife. “I don’t think lacrosse and soccer came to us necessarily saying we want to develop Pistol Creek in this way definitely,” she said. “They were saying, ‘we need more fields, here’s a piece of land that works.’” According to Economic Development Director James Mahoney, the property is 78 acres with three sections. The main area is 63 acres, which is north of Spruce Brook Road where cross country uses the paths. Mahoney said there are restraints when it comes time for development. “There are significant wetland constraints, which is a
main factor in the portion of the property,” he said. “Also, some of the cart paths that run through Pistol Creek are not on town property. The City of Middletown owns about 40 acres that were dedicated to them.” Council members were supposed to authorize Town Manager Denise McNair to initiate a process to select a consultant who can prepare a recreation master plan for the property. But after much discussion, Salina said the Parks and Recreation Commission, sport groups and the playing fields committee, which is a subcommittee of the council, need to first distinguish what locations would best suit the needs of everyone. “It would be better off if we can give a consultant a menu of what we would like to see on the property,” Salina said. “As of now, we just don’t know yet.” Salina said there are other factors that need to be discussed, such as maintenance and turf fields versus grass fields.

“We have the same amount of public grounds employees that we had for the last 15 years, even though we added space in town,” he said. Len Zielinski, Parks and Recreation chair, said the council “back pedaled” with hiring a consultant to develop a master plan for the property during the meeting. “Parks and Recreation will have to take a lead role on this by holding a hearing with all the groups in town. It’s going to be tough because we don’t have any staff to handle this right now. I have to talk to Debbie Dennis
(recreation assistant director) and we have to work something out.” Zielinski said he is not against the cart paths remaining in place for public and cross country use. “There has to be accommodations for everyone con-
cerned. One group shouldn’t really preclude another. As far as the open space goes, if you have walking trails and the rest of the other area is not maintained, pretty soon the open spaces is encroached upon and it’s not so open anymore.”

Holiday gifts for book lovers By Helen Aveline Special to The Citizen
Obviously, the greatest gift for any bibliophile is simply an amazing book. And whether they read the traditional way or have gone the electric route, Connecticut librarians, your local book experts, can suggest just the right title. The state’s Children’s/Teen librarians have compiled their annual list of ideas. The URLs of each of the 4 lists
can be found on our Facebook page. Haven’t liked us yet? There’s a link on the Berlin-Peck-Memorial Library homepage at berlinpeck.lib.ct.us. Many of the listed books are available in e-format as well. Members of the American Library Association division of RUSA publish a list of notable books for adults each year that should help locate a gift for your favorite adult reader. They also publish a Listen List for audio book titles. Perhaps you’re contemplating an eReader for someone this holiday season. Just a reminder that the library’s new eBook service, Freading, is compatible with all Barnes & Noble devices, Sony and Kobo readers, your PC or MAC, iPads/iPhones, and many popular tablets. The

Other interesting items include Bookworm Flipflops, a personalized protective Kindle sleeve and license plate frames with sayings such as, “I Brake for Libraries”; “Book-a-Holic”; and “A Good Book is the Best of Friends.” If you’re picking up a Nook HD from Barnes and Noble, check its website for Umbra’s Invisible Floating Bookshelf that magically “floats” books on

The flu, part I of a part II series:
Time to get a shot By Tanya Feke, MD Special to The Citizen
of disease to those around you who may have weaker immune systems.
Dr. Tanya Feke is a physician at Middlesex Hospital Primary Care .

All too common I hear the phrase “flu-like illness.” The words are tossed around as if they are inconsequential, even commonplace. In truth, influenza is a serious condition. It kills thousands of people in the U.S. every year, 90 percent of those deaths occurring in patients ages 65 and older. Now, it has reared its ugly head in Connecticut. According to the Center for Disease Control, influenza has been reported in 42 states and the District of Columbia. Since Sept. 30, there have been 1,575 confirmed cases in the U.S. Between Nov. 4 to Nov. 10, 7.5 percent (311 cases) of all specimen received by the CDC tested positive for influenza. This percentage is an increase for this time of year when compared to the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 influenza seasons. In Connecticut proper, there have been 39 influenza cases confirmed across five of the eight counties since Aug. 26. This includes 28 diagnoses in Fairfield, two in Hartford, one in Middletown, four in New Haven and four in New London counties. In addition, four of these individuals required hospitalization for severity of disease. However, these numbers do not necessarily reflect the true prevalence of disease. The accuracy of this data relies on practitioners actively screening for “flu-like illnesses” with respiratory samples and cultures. Many ambulatory practices do not offer in-office influenza screening, and for those that do, there may be a significant false negative rate. Many also do not swab for influenza until the season is confirmed in full swing. This makes detection of the first cases more challenging. Altogether, this suggests that the federal and state findings are likely underestimates of true influenza activity. Vaccines against influenza are an annual event. Un-
proactive and get your flu like other vaccinations that last years before a booster is shot. It not only protects you but also prevents the spread required, if at all, influenza vaccinations must be developed each and every year based on careful review of epidemiologic data. This is because influenza strains change constantly by a phenomenon known as antigenic drift. Simplified, there are two types of influenza, type A and type B. Of the strains identified this season alone, there have been 77 variants (one influenza A H1N1, 41 influenza A H3N2, and 35 influenza B). The vaccinations this year do provide coverage for the identified H1N1 and H2N3 strain, but for only 69 percent of influenza B strains. For individuals with confirmed influenza, there are prescription options available for treatment. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu ®) and zanamivir (Relenza ®) are proven effective this season so far. There is high resistance to amantadine (generic) and rimantadine (Flumadine ®) for type A viruses, and these should be reserved as a last resort. These latter medications are not effective for type B infections. There has been one pediatric death this season. The 122-Cities Mortality Reporting System attributed 6.4 percent of adult deaths to pneumonia and influenza during Nov. 4 to Nov. 10. Do not become a statistic. Be

When do I get my flu vaccine? The “Influenza Season” is not found on yearly calendars simply because the beginning and end of the flu season varies somewhat from year to year. Historically, flu vaccines have become available between August and October, and you should get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine becomes available. Remember, it takes a two or three weeks before you have protective antibodies. To learn more about availability of the flu vaccine in your area, speak to your primary healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Is the flu vaccine a guarantee I will not get the flu? The flu vaccine is not a guarantee against getting the flu. However, by getting vaccinated, you reduce the chances that you will get the flu and increase the chances that it will be a milder illness if you do get it. And, the more people who are vaccinated, the less likely that we will have a flu epidemic affecting large numbers of people.

How quickly after getting the vaccine am I protected? Generally speaking, it takes about two weeks following vaccination for your body to develop protective antibodies.

Berlin hangs tough, but comes up short Strong second half propels Hillhouse to Class M title By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen It was a tale of two halves. Berlin controlled the first half, evidenced in its 44 to 11 advantage in total offensive plays, the 19 minutes it held possession of the ball, and the six-point advantage it carried into the break. The second half was a different story, however, as Hillhouse’s offense came alive, while Berlin’s sputtered. No. 4 Hillhouse generated four touchdowns after halftime – including three in the fourth quarter – as the Academics ran away from the No. 2 seed Redcoats 34-12 in the CIAC Class M state finals Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The game began to turn in Hillhouse’s favor when the Academics stopped Berlin on a 4th-and-inches play from the Redcoat 23 with just under five minutes remaining in the third. Berlin led 12-6 at the time. Hillhouse would take advantage of the short field. The Academics punched in a TD with 2:43 to go in the period and never trailed again. Berlin coach John Capodice explained his reasoning for gambling on fourth-and-short. “When you’re in this situation, and you’re a significant underdog, you’ve got to try to pull out all the tricks,” he said. Capodice knew the less time Hillhouse had the ball, the better. “We ran 44 plays in the first half, so we were right on point with our scheme,” he said. “The kids did a great job executing it.” Although seeded lower than Berlin (11-2), Hillhouse (11-2), as Capodice indicated, was the odds-on favorite. The only losses the Academics suffered this fall came to the state’s top teams – Class L champion Daniel Hand and LL kingpin Xavier. Still, Hillhouse coach Tom Dyer expected a battle from Berlin. “We knew we had to bring our A game,” he said. “Any time you win a state championship there’s ups and downs,” said Dyer. “It’s never all up. There’s highs and lows. We had a lot of stuff (happen) for us, and I’m real happy the way the kids responded.” Hillhouse quarterback Je’Vaughn Moore rushed for 109 yards and a

Mitch Williams completed eight passes for 77 yards and one touchdown for the Redcoats, a strike to Kevin Main. Scott McLeod generated 154 allpurpose yards for the locals. Berlin elected to receive the opening kickoff and went again and again to the run on its first drive – a 10-play, 69-yard jaunt. The Redcoats capped the journey with a passing touchdown, an 18yard bullet from Williams to Main with 7:30 to go in the quarter. Hillhouse evened things at 6-6 on its first drive, and the tally remained deadlocked until the 5:49 mark of the second when Wojtus Zak bulled into the end zone from the 1 to put Berlin ahead 12-6. This drive was a thing of beauty. The Redcoats went 80 yards and ate nearly 10 minutes off the game clock. A clutch moment during the 21-play drive came when Berlin went for it
on fourth-and-short from its own 41 and got the first down. The Redcoat defense saw to it that the six-point margin held up for the remainder on the first half. With Hillhouse driving, Mike Tiri-
zoni took down Andre Anderson for a seven-yard loss. Dante Vasi then forced a fumble which teammate Dan McLeod recovered on the Berlin 19 at the 3:22 mark of the second quarter. Tirinzoni, Dan McLeod and teammate Tyler Bouchard were in on seven tackles apiece on the day. The Redcoats made their way to the Hillhouse 7 on the ensuing drive, but Pat Lomaglio’s field goal attempt from 25 yards fell short as time expired. Hillhouse appeared poised to tie things up early in the third. Berlin hung tough, however, and stopped the Academics on 4th and goal from the 1. That set up the play of the game. Facing a fourth-and-inches situation from their own 23, the Redcoats handed off to Scott McLeod, who was brought down short of the first down. From there, it was all Hillhouse. Cap’s call the most controversial of the weekend By Jim Bransfield Special to The Citizen It’s a second-guessers’ field day. Berlin coach John Capodice decided to go for a first down on fourthand-one from his own 23 with less than five minutes to play in the third quarter and leading 12-6. Scott McLeod was stopped cold and Hillhouse took over just 23 yards from paydirt and the lead. Five plays later Hillhouse star Harold Cooper (9 carries, 90 yards) scored from the three-yard line, Je’Vaughn Moore added the point and Hillhouse had a 13-12 lead. The Academics took off from there with 21 more unanswered points and Hillhouse won 34-12, handing Berlin its sixth loss in seven championship game appearances. It was the most controversial call of the championship weekend, it turned the game around and paved the way for the Hillhouse champi-
onship. “When you’re a significant underdog, you’ve got to pull out all the tricks,” Capodice said. Capodice’s game plan was to hold on to the ball and Berlin did exactly that until the fateful decision. Hillhouse had just the one score and Berlin’s ground game, which held a huge 142-42 advantage at the half, had used up huge chunks of the clock and produced the lead. In the first half, Berlin ran 44 plays to Hillhouse’s 11. That control continued in the third quarter as Berlin stopped Hillhouse’s opening drive with a goal line stand that stopped the Academics inside the one. From there, the Redcoats moved out to the 23. The drive stalled and Capodice made the call that turned the game around. Had Berlin punted in that spot, assuming that Berlin would get its

While some teams eye titles, others look to rebuild By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen
The winter sports season is now in full-swing. The following takes a look at the 2012-13 Berlin High School boys basketball, wrestling, indoor track and ice hockey teams. The boys swim preview will appear next week.
Wrestling Coach: Jim Day (28th year, 450-150-2). Assistants: Mitch Egarzarian, Jon Fiorillo. Last year: The young Redcoats had a disappointing – 5-18 – regular season, but turned in some good work in the postseason. The locals finished seventh at
the CIAC Class M state tournament with 104 points. Key loss: Stephanie Cohen. This year: Berlin returns a stacked lineup, which includes State Open qualifiers, seniors Rick Mullins and Jordan Zima, and juniors Jake Eliades, Ethan Greider and Rich Schlichting. Last winter, Eliades generated 27 wins and claimed the Class M state championship at 138 pounds. Also generating a lot of points for the Redcoats at the Class M competition were Mullins (third, 152), Greider (third, 113), Zima (fourth, 160) and Schlichting (fifth, 152). Mullins compiled 33 victories last year. Greider (28), Schlichting (27) and Zima
(22) rolled up a lot of wins as well. Riley Greider, Jeremy Eliades, Ryan Ogden, Kevin Pirruccio, Billy Conticello and Bao Le add to the Redcoats’ experienced roster, which is rounded out by Angie Davil-
la, Emily Thibeault, Laura Cohen, Zach Veleas, Andrew Mals, Bobby Andreana, Anthony Scacca, Alex Chandler, Jake Harris, Vinny Biscoglio, Jared Zima, Geoffrey Damato, Dan Terrer, Jakob Nowak, Dan Perez,

Coach Continued from page 17 night’s average punt of 37 yards, Hillhouse would have had to begin from its own 40, trailing 12-6. Up to that point, Hillhouse had scored on one 62-yard pass and had not successfully driven the ball against Berlin all night. But given the gift card of the ball on the 23, Hillhouse cashed it in. “Berlin had momentum,” said Hillhouse coach Tom Dyer. “It wasn’t stupid to go for it; it wasn’t a dumb call.” After the Hillhouse stop, all the momentum shifted to the Academics and they ran with it all the way back to New Haven with the championship plaque in tow.
Crowds The Friday night crowd for the Xavier vs. NFA game was 4,576. The paid crowd for all day Saturday was 5,189. The best draws in order were Xavier, NFA, Hand, Windsor, Berlin and North Branford. Hillhouse and Ansonia drew very small crowds. One man’s view How’s this for the Top 10? 1. Hand 2. Xavier 3. Hillhouse 4. Ansonia 5. Windsor 6. NFA 7. Staples 8. Glastonbury 9. Southington 10. And they did that today.”
Mike Davilla, Zach Pampuro, Alec Berger, Antonino Marino and Bill Sasso. Outlook: Coach Day has high hopes for his team, and rightfully so. “We will be very competitive this year,” the veteran head man stated. Day is a big believer in taking on the toughest competition around, and that is evidenced in Berlin’s 2012-13 schedule. The slate includes matches against the New England runner-up, the Maine runner-up, Connecticut’s Class L, M and S state champs, and perennial state power Danbury. “Our schedule will provide an opportunity to test ourselves on a weekly basis,” said Day, adding: “The coaching staff is looking forward to aiding the team in reaching its potential.”
Boys basketball Coach: Mike Veneziano (fourth year, 46-23). Assistant: Joe Serfass. Last year: The Redcoats earned the No. 12 seed in the CIAC Class L state tournament, and bested Naugatuck, 62-57, in the opening round. The locals would fall to Bran-
game. Gilbert, a 5-7 guard, averaged seven points-pergame. Berlin also win lean on seniors Nick Tara (5-10 guard), Blake Haskins (5-11 forward) and Jeff Sylvester (6-foot forward), and sophomores Brenden Vessichio (63 forward), Dom Nuzzo (6-6

The SCC There is no doubt the Southern Connecticut Conference is the state’s best. Three of the four titles were won by SCC teams, Xavier in LL, Hand in L and Hillhouse in Class M. Hand capped its undefeated season and clinched its overall No. 1 ranking with a 23-6 win over Windsor. Xavier continued its second half surge with a blowout 4814 win over Norwich Free Academy. Only Ansonia of the Naugatuck Valley League broke the SCC’s stranglehold on state football and finished 14-0 with its 59-26 romp over North Branford.
Ansonia’s Arkeel Newsome (28, 234) turned in the top running back performances on championship weekend. Hillhouse’s Je’Vaughn Moore (eight carries, 109 yards and a touchdown, 2-for3 passing for 90 yards and a TD), North Branford’s Brandan Basil (22-for-43, 398 yards and four TDs) and Hand’s Brendan Bilchik (92 yards running, 141 passing) were the quarterback stars. Xavier’s Tim Boyle, arguably the best pure quarterback in the field, had a quiet night going 2-for-5 for 109 yards against NFA. But then, Xavier ran for 408 yards so why throw? Just for fun, he did throw a 94-yard TD to James Sullivan.

which an incentive would not be a determining factor in whether a franchise will open in town. “They are coming in if they want to come in because they have done national studies and demographics

Preview Continued from page 20 forward Dan McLeod, sophomore defender Mitch Pitkin and sophomore goaltender Cam Criniti. The top returnees from Newington are senior defensemen Jeff Rossman and Justin Pratte, senior forwards Brendon Richard and Hunter Blaise, senior goalie Drew O’Leary, junior defender Mike Davies and sophomore forward Marco DiPaolo. Junior forward Matt Harackiewicz, sophomore defender Chris Salvio and freshman forward Luca DiPaola are promising newcomers. Rossman and O’Leary are team captains. Pratt and Blaise serve as assistant captains. Outlook: Newington-
Berlin has a sound defense and a top-notch goalie, but the team’s ability to generate goals is in question. Still, Coach Harackiewicz expects his guys to challenge for the CCC South title.
Indoor track Coach: Josh Rosek (ninth year). Assistant: Richard Rosek. Last year: The Berlin girls finished second in the Central Connecticut Conference South Division, while the BHS boys settled for fifth. Key losses: Alex Carbonell, Kaylene Sylvain, Connor Hilbie. This year: Leading the way for the BHS girls will be Catherine Voelpel. This past outdoor track season, Voelpel finished third in New England in the 400 and went on to compete in nationals.

The team’s top newcomers are Michelle Grieco (3,200) and Taylor Budney (55, relays). Sylvain and Parillo are team captains. On the boys side, Berlin will lean on the experience of Matt Kall (55), Toby Hull (55 hurdles), Brendan McLarty (800) and Darren Grabowski (300). Kevin Russell (55, relays) is a promising newcomer. Kall and Hull are team captains.
Outlook: While the BHS girls should be competitive in the CCC South, the Berlin boys, with a young and inexperienced crew, likely will have a tough time generating many
points this winter. “Both the boys and girls teams have worked hard in practice,” Josh Rosek said. “Very happy with the leadership from the captains and seniors.”

Obituaries Chester S. Stachelek With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, family member, and friend, Chester Stanley Stachelek, 82, of Kensington. The beloved husband of Genevieve Theresa (Zaniewski) Stachelek for 59 1/2 years, Chester went to Our Lord after a brief illness on Dec. 7, 2012, at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain, with his loving family by his side. Chester was born in New Britain, the son of Stanislaw and Rozalja (Sokolowski) Stachelek. A former parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and Holy Cross Church, he attended New Britain schools. He served in the U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict and later joined the New Britain Fire Department, retiring after 30 years as a Lieutenant. Also a self-employed house builder who built many New Britain and Berlin area homes, Chester loved working with
wood and built many beautiful pieces of furniture and décor for his family. An avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan, he especially loved cooking, history and politics, and dancing polkas in his younger years. Chester lived in the New Britain-Kensington area his entire life and was a member of St. Paul Church, Kensington for over 40 years. A man deeply devoted to his family, Chester is survived by his loving wife Genevieve (Zaniewski) Stachelek; his beloved daughter Deborah (Stachelek) Sanders and son-inlaw Douglas Sanders, and his beloved son Stephen Stachelek and daughter-in-law Donna Stachelek. He also leaves his four treasured grandchildren, the joys of his life, Jonathan Stachelek, Lauren Sanders and her fiancé Timothy Rivera-Myers, James Stachelek, and Melissa Sanders. He also leaves his sister Helen Beaulieu; his sisterin-law Helen Grady; his cousin Veronica Bielewicz, and so many beloved family members and good friends. Chester was predeceased by his father and mother Stanislaw and Rozalja (Sokolowski) Stachelek; his in-
fant brother Adam Stachelek; his two infant sisters Eve Stachelek and Pauline Stachelek; his brothers-in-law Sylvio Beaulieu and William Grady, and his aunt and uncle Marjorie and Stasiu Koncewicz. The family thanks the Hospital of Central Connecticut Critical Care Staff for their loving and kind medical treatment of Chester in his final weeks. Funeral services were held Dec. 13, 2012, from the Farrell Funeral Home, New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul Church, Kensington. Burial followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chester’s parish, St. Paul Church, 479 Alling Street, Kensington, CT 06037 or to his favorite charity that always supported the firefighters, the Salvation Army, 78 Franklin Square, New Britain, CT 06051. Because we wish to honor Chet with his favorite color, all are invited to wear something red to the wake and funeral. To light a candle or send a condolence, please visit FarrellFuneralHome.com.
