Siblings receive a room full of Christmas gifts By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen
Three Berlin siblings received a Christmas miracle which unfolded as they were mourning the loss of their grandfather. On Dec. 21, Mason, 9, Zoe, 5, and Hunter DiMauro, 5, walked into an office overflowing with Christmas gifts all addressed to them from Santa. Their grandfather, Joseph
Gwara, 57, had worked at UPS Freight in Wallingford. His cardiac arrest Dec. 5 came as a shock to his family, especially his stepdaughter Jennifer DiMauro. He was hospitalized and unconscious for 15 days before he died Dec. 20. “They all knew he was sick. But when I told my kids that he actually went to heaven, they just sat with saddened hearts very quietly,”
said DiMauro, mother of the three children. “They asked if they could go see him in heaven.” Dave Bartolucci was Gwara’s supervisor at UPS Freight. When Bartolucci found out Gwara was hospitalized, he organized a fundraiser to buy gifts for the grandchildren to make Christmas a little bit happier and easier for the family. DiMauro said “When I found out about the fundraiser from Dave, I told the kids right away that Grandpa Joe had asked Santa to make an extra stop for them at his job in Wallingford.” Bartolucci did not know how much money he would raise. He asked DiMauro to write a wish list for each kid, with as many gifts they could come up with. “He told me to make it extensive and said whatever he can, he will get,” DiMauro said. “A week goes by and he calls and said he raised so much money, that he was able to get every single item on each kid’s list.” See Siblings, page 4

Willard student and family to hold tribute for Newtown By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen Willard Elementary School student Jordan Spencer, 10, felt compelled to help Newtown heal from the tragedy that struck Dec 14. He came home from school after hearing about the shooting and asked his mother what he could do to show support for the grieving families. His mother Alysia Robinson said there were already foundations set up to help Newtown financially. So instead of a fundraiser, Spencer and Robinson made another plan. A “Light The Sky With Light And Love For Sandy Hook
Elementary Angels” tribute to be hosted in Newtown. The idea is to create an illuminaria lantern release for the victims’ families. This can help the healing process by saying “’I love you’ to their lost loved ones through personalized messages and letting the lanterns travel to heaven,” Robinson said. “It’s a way to remember and celebrate the lives of the victims.” Spencer and his mother are taking donations of lanterns, twine and tags. Their goal is to raise 1,500 lanterns in order to provide each Sandy Hook EleSee Tribute, page 3

For Corrine and Mike Colleen from green mountains, she comes down tonight, under stars and a honey moon she glows, handmaiden of the light. Take my hand and you’ll find the way straight to my heart, sings Colleen from green mountains who will make things all right. I will water your thirsty workhorses, she swayed, milk your pale white cow, and in the morning when you wake up there’ll be a fire on your hearth. Now it’s a good long time till morning when the night’s only just begun, and if you say that you love me, my true heart you have won.
If you say, dearest, I love you, she will love you every night, Colleen from green mountains, so fair she’d give a blindman back his sight. She’s a dream you wonder after, she’s an earthborn angel by your side, she’s the real-life lover you discover waking on the bright moonlit ride. Colleen from green mountains, you may love her forever these nights, fair girl from green mountains, her sweet love song calls out, invites.

after seeing evil make such an irreplaceable hole in the lives of a nation. I can’t speak for everyone, but for me I feel like we’ve all adopted these children and teach-
ers into our hearts as our own. To me, they’re like America’s children now. We cannot ever know what the families are going through, but we can certainly make a
promise to ourselves to never let them be forgotten. To let the legacy of their life overshadow their death. And to celebrate the light and love they graced the world with.

Bartolucci and his staff from UPS Freight raised $1,200 for gifts. “It’s a Christmas miracle what they did for my kids,” DiMauro said. “They truly are all angels at UPS and I’m so grateful. They bought toys for the kids that I could never afford.” Bartolucci and his wife went shopping every evening the week of Dec 10. “I know Dave was in one toy store and his wife was in another just trying to find all the different gifts on the wish list,” DiMauro said. “They wanted to do something special for the people
who meant the most to Joe.” The night Gwara died, employees volunteered to help wrap over 100 gifts. As the children walked into the office, they all said in unison “Oh my God.” Zoe DiMauro said her heart felt like it was going to pop from excitement. “I miss grandpa so much,” she said. The children thanked Santa, UPS and their grandfather in memory. “Don’t worry everybody, grandpa Joe is in our hearts,” Hunter DiMauro said. Gwara was in DiMauro’s life for 32 years and had raised her since she was a child. “I was his daughter and my kids were his grandchildren,” she said. DiMauro said her stepfa-
ther and the kids were always together, especially on the weekends. During the summer, Gwara and the family would go fishing, swimming and spend time at the park and beach. “He was at every baseball game, every soccer game and dance recitals cheering for the kids. He was just a big part of our lives,” DiMauro said. “He was the one who would always be holding one of the kids.” Children in the neighborhood called him “Christmas Joe” because he decorated his house like a winter wonderland, DiMauro said. “He will truly be missed for all the joy he brought to this family,” she said.

Ten motorists were cited for operating an unregistered vehicle. One motorist was cited for failure to carry a registration or insurance card. Stacey Lyn Dastoli, 27, of Ke n s i n g t o n , unexpectedly passed away on Dec. 16, 2012. Stacey was born on July 21, 1985, in New Britain, to parents Foca F. Dastoli and Rae Janise Dastoli. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Connecticut earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a focus in Spanish, while also studying abroad at the University of Granada in Spain. Stacey was employed by the State of Massachusetts - Department of Children and Families in Springfield, Mass., where she was recently honored the distinct DCF Commissioner’s Award for her exemplary work with children and families. Stacey’s biggest fault was that she loved too much. Her true passion was caring for children and had a unique ability to always put others before herself. Stacey felt it was her personal responsibility to protect, shelter, and care for those children who could not do it for themselves. She poured her heart and soul into the caring of children, believing that each one deserved to be given warmth and love. She was a member of St. Paul Church in Kensington, and was active in her community volunteering, including the United Way Toys for Tots and recently coordinated efforts for hurricane Sandy victims. She is survived by her mother Rae Janise Dastoli and father Foca F. Dastoli, of Kensington; brother Vincent A. Dastoli, of Kensington, his girlfriend Alexandra
Marinelli, of Southington, sister Amy J. Soto, husband Edwin Soto Jr. and pride and joy, nephew and godson, Andrew Nicolas Soto, of West Hartford; grandmother Sandra Distasio, of Englewood, Fla.; grandmother Barbara Dastoli, of Kensington; aunt Laura and husband Dino Bonelli, of Cromwell; aunt Anna and husband Frank Caruso, uncle Frank and wife Josephine Dastoli, uncle Joseph Dastoli, uncle John Dastoli, uncle Mario and wife Sally Dastoli and uncle Vincent and Cynthia Dastoli, all of Berlin; aunt Dacia and husband Richard Jondron, of McKinney, Texas, uncle David and wife Sandra Distasio, of Wallingford, uncle Henry and wife Ann Sweeney, of Connecticut, uncle Kenneth Distasio, of North Haven, aunt Karen and Al Acampora, of West Haven, and many close cousins, special friends and co-workers. Stacey is predeceased by her grandfathers Vincenzo Dastoli and Andrew DiStasio. Stacey will always be remembered for her infectious smile that would light up any room and her great sense of humor. She loved spending time with her family and friends, shopping, going to the beach, listening to music and enjoyed living life to the fullest. She lived every day by the words “you only live once.” May she rest in peace. She will be forever missed. Services were held Dec. 21, 2012, at St. Paul Church. Memorial donations can be made in Stacey’s memory to “DCF Kids Funds,” sent to Department of Children and Families c/o Linda Narcisse, 140 High St., Springfield, MA, 01105. New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home assisted the family.

Student voices:
Cycling across America for cancer victims By Casey Lupini Special to The Citizen
Casey Lupini is a Berlin resident and a student at Clarkson University, New York. During the summer of 2013, I will be cycling across Lupini the United States with 100 other college students from all over the country to benefit cancer patients. Split amongst four cross-country routes, we will all start in Baltimore and end in one of the four destinations: Portland, Seattle, San Diego, and San Francisco. My 70-day coastto-coast journey will begin in Baltimore and finish after
crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. The summer of 2013 marks the 12th year of 4K for Cancer. 4K for Cancer is a program of the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This program donates money raised directly to young adults who are fighting cancer to help support them with payments for treatments. People may wonder why I want to cycle across the country. It is a challenge that I am ready to attempt for not only personal reasons, but also in honor of those who have been, or are afflicted with cancer. After hearing about 4K for Cancer, I did some research and found that I really respected the principal idea and focus of the organization. It is a
wonderful way for cancer survivors to reach out and tell their stories on how they coped with having cancer and the impact it had on their lives. The awareness this riding challenge hopes to bring to people concerning cancer and its risks, along with cancer prevention, is great. We will be doing this by visiting cancer patients at hospitals, cancer centers, and hospices, as well as hosting cancer education programs in the towns along the way in our trek across the country. We will also promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how fitness can help reduce the risk of cancer and other disease. I would like to dedicate various sections of my journey to those you love; who are fighting, who have

Cooling cracks of Connecticut
Mountain top blueberries
Central Connecticut was the site where the Atlantic Ocean started to form millions of years ago. The ‘Hanging Hills’ seen around the state (such as the one pictured on a Berlin-Meriden mountain top) are old lava flows that ordinarily make up ocean crust. When the lava flows cooled, the molten rock contracted and formed concentric lines. Luckily for Connecticut, the ocean forming regions shifted eastward, sparing the state from being ripped in half.

Blueberries are native to New England and many wild shrubs can be found around the state. The berries are smaller and more tart compared to the store-bought fruit. Blueberries will grow in scrub areas, such as on this Berlin-Meriden basalt mountain top pictured.

“A lot of it is a dedication to the rigor of the practices and practice schedule. Also, I personally dislike losing, and love racing. Much of my success and improvement can be attributed to the fact that when there is someone next to me in the water, I will pull through until my hand hits the wall first at the end of a race. We have a large group of new swimmers this year, some new to the team, and some brand new to the sport. Our returning swimmers have been an excellent influence on the new swimmers, providing support, encouragement, and showing them by example the work ethic and approach that we need to get the gains we are

The Class of 2012 is Dan Roberts (Class of 1967), Joseph Simeone (1936), Lino “Chick” Girone (1936), Paul Kornichuk (1949), Tammi Borkowski (1989), Jennifer Baccaro (1991), Kyle Gallo (1993), Susan Church Zibell (1993) and Jesse Carlson (1999), coaches George Hall and Ken Parciak, and contributor Bob Peckrul. Also, the 1986 BHS wrestling team was honored ... Charles Bertagna, of Berlin, was named a Sportsman of Distinction at the Meriden Sports Reunion dinner ... After a 28-year absence, Tara Profitt, a BHS alumna, returned to the Paralympics as a member of the United States table tennis team. The 2012 Summer Paralympics were held in London.
This and that: Last winter, wrestlers hit the mat with new weight classes put in place by the National Federation of State High School Associations ... A National Federation of State High School Associations baseball rule adopted by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Association requires that all non-wood bats meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performance standard, which is used by the NCAA. Metal BBCOR bats have a smaller sweet spot and a reduced trampoline effect. The new rule went into effect last spring ... The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with U.S. District Judge Stefan Underhill, who found in 2010 that competitive cheerleading cannot – at least not yet – be considered a varsity sport under Title IX, the 1972 federal law that requires equal opportunities for men and women in academics.
2012 Continued from page 15 “You’re stepping into a program that’s been established. You’re stepping into a program with a proud tradition. That opportunity doesn’t always come up.” —New BHS athletic director Dan Scavone. “Coming out of college to professional baseball is such a reality check. It’s hard to process it all. But in two months here, I’ve probably learned more than I have in my last three or four years pitching combined. You just learn the mental grind, and what it takes.” —BHS alum Mark Bor-
donaro during his rookie season as a pro. “I’m just so proud of the kids, the program. The goal from December 3 last year was to get back to the semifinal game, advance, and get to Rentschler. Now the kids have put themselves in an outstanding position to compete for a state championship. That’s a special thing to do. If you look at the state of Connecticut, there’s 146 teams playing, and there’s only eight left. One hundred and thirty eight had to put the gear away.” —BHS football coach John Capodice after his team prevailed in the Class M semifinals.
