Mayor to help lobby for small towns
Berlin honors Veterans Day
By Monica Szakacs The Berlin Citizen

Above, members of the VFW and the American Legion perform the three-volley salute during the veterans ceremony. Below, members of the VFW salute the flag. On Veterans Day, America honors the brave men and women who have served this country and those who currently serve. On Nov. 11, members of the Berlin community, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion came together to recognize the dedication from all U.S. soldiers who perserve the freedom of this country. Mayor Adam Salina’s speech: Veterans’ Day is about the men and women who have served this country and those you have sacrificed their lives for this nation. But Berlin is also about community. We are one small town amidst thousands of others across this nation. Yet, since before we were even established, people in this
area fought for their country and some have died for it. Through the generations they have been our family members, our neighbors, our friends, our classmates. They sat next to us in church, we saw them at the supermarket or at the little league fields and we stood in line with them to vote. Those who have fought and those who have died have always been a part of our community. And when they are lost, we have lost someone important to us, and today on Veterans’ Day we remember them and what they have done and what they continue to do for all of us. See Speech, page 16
Mayor Adam Salina has been appointed to the board of directors of Connecticut Council of Small Towns. The purpose of the council Salina is to give a voice in the legislative process to small towns. For example, through the lobbying of the council several years ago, board members were able to implement the Small Town Economic Assistance Program through the legislator. Residents may have heard about the town receiving STEAP grants for the development of Veterans Park. Berlin also received funding for downtown revitalization programs. STEAP grants are only available for small towns. “As members of the board of directors, we would be called upon to testify before certain committees about pieces of legislation that would impact small towns,” Salina said. “So it can be anything from unfunded mandates to the municipal aid for the budget.”
There are two main organizations within the state of Connecticut that lobby for cities and towns: COST and the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities. CCM does not have a population limit in order for a town to belong to the organization. COST has a population limitation of 30,000 or less. Berlin belongs to both groups. Salina said representatives from the CCM council usually come from big cities, and the issues that are being lobbied do not have a direct impact on small towns. “That’s why COST was formed - to give a voice to the smaller communities that consist of a population of 30,000 and under,” he said. “Quite frankly, small towns are the majority of the state.” Salina said COST’s board of directors is made up of first selectmen and mayors from small municipalities that the council is representing because “they know their towns better than anyone.” “What we come up with are legislative initiatives,” he said. “We are an active lobby group on behalf of the small towns.” Salina was first elected as

She was quick to offer help to anyone who needed it, whatever the cause. She spent every single day putting everyone else’s needs before her own. She didn’t base her value on how much income she could attain, or how much credit she would receive or how others might perceive her. She did things for people because she believed that is what we are here for. The world is simply a poorer place today because of her loss. We will not forget the life lessons she taught us; and we will never forget the memory of her, the finest, most generous and compassionate care giver we ever knew. Services were held Nov. 10, 2012 at Wellspring Church, Kensington. Burial was private at West Lane cemetery in Kensington. Donations in Linda’s memory can be made to Wellspring Church after school programs, 222 Lincoln St. Kensington CT 06037. The Berlin Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Diane (Fiori) Martin. Linda was a registered nurse for over 30 years, a devoted mother and care giver to many. She loved animals, and helping others. Linda was a very special person who touched the lives of virtually every person she came in contact with. There was not a thing for anyone she would not do. People are often judged by how attractive, successful, or famous they are. She exceeded these accomplishments by how she touched other people’s lives. She thought of other people’s needs before her own.

Linda A. (Perretta) Fiori, 53, of Rocky Hill, the loving wife of James Fiori for 29 years, went home to be with her father and Savoir Jesus Christ on Nov. 7, 2012. She passed away at home with her family by her side after a courageous seven month battle with melanoma. She was a native of Berlin and the daughter of the late James Perretta. Linda loved all animals and always wanted to share her blessings with others, she volunteered at Birthright of Newington, The Kensington Vol. Fire Department, delivered Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to the elderly in Berlin, served meals to the homeless on holidays and every Christmas morning she would join others from Wellspring church visiting and handing out toys to children at The Hospital for special care. The presidential election was a close race in Berlin, 5,499 to 5,361 votes, with Obama taking the lead over Republican candidate Mitt Romney. But when it came down to the U.S. Senate race, Berlin residents voted in favor of the Republican Party with 5,467 votes for Linda McMahon and 5,064 votes for Murphy. State Senate for the 16th District is Democrat Terry Gerratana. Representative in Congress for the 1st Congressional District is Democrat John Larson. Democrat Catherine Abercrombie beat Republican opponent Pablo Soto for state representative for the 83rd House District and Democrat Joe Aresimowicz was re-

By now it’s safe to say that voters know Barack Obama, Democrat, was reelected as president and Christopher Murphy, Democrat, won the U.S. Senate seat in Connecticut. Berlin residents also might know the results of their local district elections, such as Board of Education,
state representative, state senator and representative in Congress. But here is a breakdown of how the town voted. The four Board of Education members elected by the public are incumbents Kristin Campanelli, Gary Brochu, Jeffery Cugno and new comer George Synnott. Berlin Registrars of Voters are Elizabeth Tedeschi, Republican, and Frederick Jortner, Democrat, who is taking the place of Charles Warner.

Obituaries
Mark Wood
Mark Aaron Wood, formerly David Aaron Swihart, of Au b u r n , Wash., passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in SeaTac, Wash. Mark was 37 yrs. old. Mark was born Oct. 28, 1974, in New Britain, Conn., to Gail Ann Craddock and Donald David Swihart, Jr. He was raised in Berlin, Kensington, and Meriden as well as Redmond, Wash. Mark attended several schools throughout his younger years including Redmond Junior High and Overlake School in Redmond. He went on to graduate from Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vt., as one of only four students in their graduating class who attended VA for their entire four years of upper school. Following high school Mark furthered his
education at Sterling College in Vermont and later at Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, Calif. In June of 1983, Mark moved to Redmond, Wash., upon the marriage of his mother to his future adoptive father, Steven R. Wood. Mark’s working career spanned a variety of fields including Kinko’s in Redmond, Wash.; San Marcos, Calif.; and Farmington, Conn. He has also worked as a jeweler, gemologist and sales person in the Fine Jewelry Department of Nordstrom in Farmington. In his leisure time, Mark enjoyed reading, helping others, fantasy roll playing games, reading some more, and collecting quotes for a book he someday wanted to publish. Mark’s mother will forever remember and cherish his hugs, which were like receiving a strong yet very loving embrace. Mark’s speech was very fast, which some people
thought must have come from his Irish ancestry. He had beautiful large hazel green eyes and hands that looked like baseball mitts from his mother’s side of the family, gestures and stances from his birth father, and ears that neither of his birth parents could figure out the origin of. Mark was absolutely wonderful with children because he was kind, funny, and could reach them at their own level. He was able to listen when they were sad, share in their laughter when they were happy yet he had very good boundaries and was a gentle yet firm disciplinarian when necessary. Mark loved to talk with people and was genuinely interested when meeting someone new. He could, however, be very black and white at times and because he chose to spend a great deal of time alone, he sometimes missed the importance of some of his opinions and perspectives.
The bottom line is Mark was a kind, gentle, loving, old fashioned, caring, funny, sad, courteous (he truly enjoyed knowing his social etiquette), highly intelligent, shy, generous, alone and sometimes lonely, and yet a very compassionate person to others, especially children and those who seemed to be lost. Survivors include his mother, Gail A. Craddock and her husband, Steven H. Fleming, of Redmond, Wash., and Co. Mayo, Ireland; adoptive father, Steve Wood, of Bellevue; birth father, D. David Swihart, Jr., of Grants Pass, Ore.; former fiancé, Valerie HuguesChabert, of Nimes, France; numerous aunts and uncles; his cousin, William R. Wood, of Las Vegas, Nev.; along with other cousins and extended family members. A period of adjustment is needed before arranging for a memorial service in remembrance of Mark at a time and location still to be
determined sometime in the future. Mark’s mother would like to thank everyone in Mark’s life for giving him their love, support, and commitment in the hope that he would someday find peace and happiness. And if anyone wants to do something in Mark’s memory, plant a hardwood tree that has beautiful autumn colors in your local park or make a donation to Evergreen Health Foundation of Kirkland, Wash. and earmark it for the Neonatal or Pediatric Departments. Family and friends are invited to view photos and share their memories on Mark’s online guest book at flintofts.com. Flintoft’s Funeral Home and Crematory, Issaquah, Wash., (425) 3926444.

elected as state representative for the 30th House District. Out of 13,583 eligible voters in Berlin, 11,056 voted in this year’s election, Nov. 6, which is an 81.3 percent voter turnout. Out of all five voting precincts, District 5 had the lowest turnout of 80.1 percent compared to 83.6 percent in District 1. Tedeschi said this is “strange” because District 5 has the most registered voters - 3,721 - and District 1 has the least amount of voters - 1,579. Five residents voted overseas, 758 voted through absentee ballots, 10,202 voted at the polls and 91 non-registered voters casted their ballots at Town Hall for the presidential election.

Veterans Commission member Charles Colaresi’s speech: In 1954, Congress amended the holiday to be known as Veterans Day to honor all veterans. Today on this 11th hour, on this 11th day, of the 11th month, we pause to honor America’s veterans and celebrate their contributions to our way of life. Generation after generation, from Bunker Hill and Bennington to Bagdad and Abbottabad, they have protected, defended and preserved the principals and ideals that define our democracy. Across every remarkable sweep of history, today’s America was shaped at Lexington and Concord, Antietam and Gettysburg. Just one week after Hurricane Sandy hit the state, causing power outages in Berlin and across New England and leaving a path of devastation along the shoreline, Nor’easter Athena covered Connecticut with snow Nov. 7. In Berlin, five inches fell causing cars to loss traction and spinout on the roads, especially on the Chamberlin Highway.

Even with early tournament exit, coach gives team, season high marks By Ken Lipshez Special to The Citizen
Berlin High girls volleyball coach Bob Tarigo couldn’t be any more proud of his players if they had won a state championship. The Redcoats’ season ended at home Friday night in the first round of the Class M tournament with a cliffhanging 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 16-25, 2514, 16-14) loss to Lauralton Hall-Milg ford. The Redcoats had a 2-games-to-1 lead, stumbled in the fourth game and were on the verge of losing big in the decisive fifth when they battled back from the precipice of elimination before falling. Thus ended Tarigo’s 31st year on the job, but his deep love for the program, the players and his two assistants have him ready to embark on number 32. The theme of his post-
season address revealed the ultimate philosophy that he hopes will become part of his players’ foundation for life. “I told them, we lost but the sun will come up tomorrow morning and you will be alive and healthy,” he said. “There are more important things than wins and losses. Do I want to win? Of course, but it’s a process. Overall we had a very successful season.” The Redcoats finished 12-7, marking the 12th straight year that Tarigo has led them into the states, but the legacy the team leaves is about people rather than numbers. Tarigo was introduced to senior Italian exchange student Giorgia Rossetto two days before tryouts. When he saw her play, he knew he had a rare talent, one that could carry Berlin to an exceptional campaign. She dominated play at the net. “Giorgia made a big difference,” Tarigo said. “Hopefully we can re-
group, but we’re not going to have a player like her. If she’s not the best player we’ve ever had at Berlin, she’s one of them.” With Rossetto joining the team in September, Tarigo had to convince girls who may have seen themselves as the team’s top players to accept a role in support of the Redcoats’ new superstar. One of the seniors who helped Rossetto make a seamless transition was senior Kristina Hagmeier. “She was the unsung hero [against Lauralton Hall],” Tarigo said. “She’ll always give you 110 percent. She fell on her knee early but didn’t come out. Sure she had a bone bruise, but played the rest of the game and played great. I thank her every day for being there.” He paid tribute to the other graduating seniors – hitter Kailene Rampone, service specialist Emily Hamel, versatile Dominika Wejda and Gabrielle St. Jarre, determined
to contribute as she battled back from a knee injury. Berlin’s future rest in the hands of improving setter Alicia Maule, top server Olivia Dellaquila, hitter Abbie Underwood and defensive specialists Alyssa Germano and Amanda Patterson. Tarigo said Berlin relinquished too many free balls to Lauralton. The serving was solid and the hitting efficient, as his numbers indicate. “We served as well as we served all year (90 percent success rate),” he said. “Giorgia had 24 kills in 47 kill attempts. We were 45-for-102, which is better than normal. Kailene was 9for-20, which was better than most of the year, and Abbie was 6-for-17. It wasn’t for the lack of kills.” The Redcoats trailed 10-3 in the fifth game, but with Tarigo urging them to fight for one point at a time, they stormed back. Even with the

Class L soccer recap Berlin boys down Bunnell, Platt Tech By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen As the old saying goes, revenge is a dish best served cold. Two years after Bunnell-Stratford broke Berlin’s heart in the postseason, the Redcoats returned the favor. Brian Kennure and Steve Burns knocked in second-half goals Saturday night at Scalise Field as No. 14 Berlin downed No. 19 Bunnell, 2-0, in a CIAC Class L boys soccer firstround state tournament game. “It’s a little nice to get some payback,” said BHS coach Dave Francalangia, whose troops were bested by Bunnell in the Class L semifinals in 2010, a game decided on penalty kicks. “We’ve been peaking at the right time this year,” the coach contin-
ued. “We’re 6-0-2 in the last eight games.” The win over Bunnell bumped the Redcoats’ record to 10-4-3. Bunnell, the defending Class L state champ, rolled up a record of 56-6 this fall. “The first half we were playing timid, we were playing nervous,” said Francalangia, speaking of his team’s tournament opener. “We were playing as if we never played in a state tournament game before. For most of these guys, that was the case.” “It was a tale of two halves,” the coach continued. “We turned it on in the second half, and they could not touch us. We dominated play.” Along with the two goals the Redcoats tallied Saturday, the victors hit the post four times, and had a pair of goals taken away. See Boys, page 27
Lady Redcoats KO’d in Round 2 By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen Having rattled off four straight wins, and not suffering a loss since Oct. 9, the Berlin High School girls soccer team rode a wave of confidence into the CIAC Class L state tournament. The Lady Redcoats’ first-round opponent, Platt, on the other hand, entered the tournament fray not riding quite so high. The Panthers had dropped four of their last five and were without the services of a key player. In the end, the teams continued on their trajectory. But it was a tight contest. Taylor Budney scored on an assist from Erin Goodwin midway through the first half and that single goal proved enough to propel No. 6 Berlin past No. 27 Platt Saturday night at Scalise Field.
This was the third time the Central Connecticut Conference South Division foes faced off this fall. The Lady Redcoats swept the series, just barely. “They’re a competitive team, they work hard,” BHS coach Steve Yanosy said of Platt, which wrapped up its 2012 campaign with a record of 6-9-2. “Tonight, we hit the crossbar, they hit the crossbar. It was just one of those games.” “Survive and move on,” Yanosy added. Platt coach Bob Beale praised the Berlin girls, who owned a 12-4 shot advantage Saturday. “They’re good, they’re fast. They came in second in the league this year,” he said. “I thought we played extremely well tonight.” The Lady Redcoats (11-3-3) earned a second-round date with See Girls, page 27

Once again, BHS secures spot in playoffs By Jim Bransfield Special to The Citizen
It’s November. That means the weather is turning cold, winter is just around the corner and the Berlin High football team is heading to the playoffs. In eight of the last nine seasons, the Redcoats have been in the CIAC championship playoffs and win or lose their Thanksgiving Eve game with New Britain, Berlin will tee it up in the Class M playoffs on Nov. 27. “That’s always our goal, to be one of the eight teams in the playoffs and have a chance to play for a state
championship,” said Berlin coach John Capodice, who has a career record of 79-20. “That we have been there in eight of the last nine years, which means we’re winning 80 percent of our games, is a tribute to the assistant coaches, the players and our program.” This fall, the Redcoats (81) had one hiccup in yet another impressive regular season, losing to Class L Platt of Meriden 34-14. “I’ll tell you that’s done and forgotten,” said Capodice, who has been the head man at Berlin since 2004. “We prepare to go 1-0 each week. But it is hard to play well every week for 10 weeks. These are 16- and 17-

(8-1), Hillhouse (7-2) and perhaps New London (7-2). Just outside the field of eight with a chance to move in are Montville and St. Joseph. Clearly Class M will be no walk in the park for anyone. But before that happens, there is the small matter of New Britain to attend to on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. “That should be a competitive game,” said Capodice. “They run to the ball well, they have good speed and are led by a good quarterback. We expect a good, competitive game.” Last year’s game was called by the officials with a couple of minutes left as things got more than a bit chippy on the field. Both coaches engaged in a battle of words for the next week. Clearly, there is not a lot of 1229691

year old kids and to get them to pay attention every week for every game is hard. They, like the rest of us, have busy lives and a lot of things are going on with them. While we as adults might know that they have to stay focused all the time, in the end they are kids.” Berlin’s kids have a number of key wins this season, including 25-14 over Rocky Hill (8-1), 27-12 over Northwest Catholic (7-2) and most recently, a 27-18 win over Bloomfield (6-3). All, however, are Class S schools. But all any team can do is play the schedule the league, in this case the Central Connecticut Conference, hands it. In the postseason, Berlin is in Class M. love lost here. Capodice didn’t talk about that, but instead talked about the positives of his own team. “We have a great group of kids here,” he said. “They have done a terrific job of preparation week after week. I really believe it has been a total team effort than has gotten us to where we are [currently ranked No. 2 in Class M, with a shot at finishing as the top seed]. “Our offensive line and tight ends have been terrific and have allowed our backs

visitors at match point, they refused to go down quietly. “Going into our last serve rotation, we were down 1410,” he said. “They made it 1411, 12, 13 and then 14-14. We had a serve miscue and they got the next point [on a net violation], but the big factor was the girls never gave up.” Rossetto will cap the season with an appearance in the Senior All-Star Game slated for Plainville Nov. 19. She’s the first Berlin player to gain such recognition since Krystie Luczynski in 2009 and only the sixth in program history. Tarigo, who played basketball at CCSU for legendary coach Bill Detrick, has compiled a record of 419-181, but that’s the last thing that interests him. The girls’ determination to come back to the gym eager to move forward after experiencing defeat – a valuable lesson in life – pleases him most. “We have to make sure the kids enjoy what they’re doing,” he said. He never fails to praise the contributions of his two assistants – former BHS twosport star Nancy DeBlasio and his son Jeff Tarigo – whose ability to relate with the players on different levels remains tantamount to success. “It was really a group effort on everybody’s part,” he said.

Youth Sports Football A Division Berlin Bears 38, Durham 8: With the win, the fourth straight for Berlin, the Bears captured the Connecticut Youth Football League American Division championship and ended their regular season with a record of 6-2. Berlin scored four first-half touchdowns to take a commanding lead. Mitch Maslowski caught three TD passes from Jack Lynch, and Nick Zuk rushed for the other. After the break, Jack Hamel rushed for the Bears’ final touchdown. Ricky Nappi and Nathan Comstock ran and caught the ball well for the victors. J.J. Moss connected on all three of his extra point attempts. For the third straight game, Berlin’s defense gave up points only late in the fourth quarter. Danny Labbadia, Nick Lojko, Spencer Duke, Marc D’Amore, Steven Bienkowski, Quinn Burns and Matt Stapell anchored the defense. B1 Division Berlin Bears 24, Windsor 6 (CTYFL playoffs): Berlin started the scoring on a two-yard carry by Patrick Ladas, topped off with a Giancarlo Tufano point-after kick. Sam Capodice added to the Bears’ lead with a 30-yard strike to Connor Giudice. Tufano split the up rights to make it 16-0. After Windsor got on the board, Berlin completed its scoring on a three-yard dash by Ladas. Once again, Tufano knocked in the point-after. The victors’ stingy defense was anchored by James Mazzarella, Greg Carson, Malachi Burby, Ladas, Kevin Dunn, Kevin Stafstrom, Dominic Latarullo, Ryan Terlecky, Alex Halkias, Tyler Burek, Giudice, Tyler Cop, Tyler Dinkins and Matt Wojciechowski. The Bears’ offensive surge was pushed by linemen Mazzarella, Greg Carson, Tyler Tralli, Latarullo, Stafstrom and Terlecky.
health notes: Strep Throat by Alina Osnaga, MD I have a sore throat – does that mean I have strep throat? No. Not all sore throats are strep infections. Strep throat is a bacterial infection whereas many other sore throats are viral. How is strep throat transmitted? The strep bacteria can be passed from person to person during breathing, sneezing, and coughing. Tiny droplets carrying the bacteria are projected into the air and breathed in by others nearby. How will the doctor determine if you have strep throat? Your doctor will assess your symptoms and may conduct a simple rapid strep test. This test includes a swab of the throat and tonsils to collect possible bacteria. Results will be available in several minutes. If the test is positive treatment will be prescribed. If the rapid strep test is negative your doctor might order a throat culture which may take 48 hours to get results.

Tuesday, after press time, at Wesleyan University. The Lady Redcoats were represented by nine swimmers in the postseason: Joanna Wojtun, Katherine Burek, Amanda Martino, Kelsey Kozikowski, Holly Chirico, Kayla Cervoni, Arian Silas, Emily DeVivo and Olivia DeGroff. Berlin’s Leah Pawelczyk qualified for the state meet in diving, and finished fifth while breaking the school record with a score of 294.60. The diving finals were held Friday at Plainville High School. At the swimming qualifier, Wojtun placed 17th (2:26.12) in the 200 individual medley. She swam the 100 breaststroke as well, and was 15th. Burek swam the 100 breaststroke and placed 16th. DeGroff placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:19.99) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.34). Both were best times.

Kozikowski swam the 50 freestyle and placed ninth (25.95). She was sixth in the 100 butterfly. Silas clocked a best time of 1:07.95 in the 100 butterfly and crossed the finish line in 19th place. Cervoni finished 19th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.67. DeVivo was 10th in the 100 backstroke, clocking a time of 1:05.44. Martino placed 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:05.46) and
15th in the 50 freestyle (26.91). Chirico clocked career bests in the 200 freestyle (2:11.10) and the 500 freestyle (6:00.34). Berlin also turned in solid work in relays. The 200 medley team of Martino, Burek, Kozikowski and DeGroff placed fourth, just missing out on the school record, and the 400 freestyle foursome of DeVivo, Wojtun, Silas and Chirico landed in 12th place.

No. 11 Pomperaug Monday afternoon at Scalise Field, and Yanosy expected a battle. “They’re a very, very good team,” the coach said of Pom-
Boys Continued from page 21 Meanwhile, Berlin’s defense was staunch, registering its fifth straight shutout. Francalangia praised the defensive efforts of Pat Veley, Matt Heimlich, Evan Hale and Kris Langevin, and keeper Brian Bostrom. “Bunnell had one legitimate shot tonight,” said the coach. “Our defense is going to take us far this year. I feel that.”
Football Continued from page 22 to do very well. Our defense has done a very good job, too.” Capodice listed his quartet of running backs — Justin Gombotz, Kevin Main, Wojtus Zak and Scott McLeod — as keys to his team’s success, and said that quarterback Mitch Williams has done a great job in leading the team. Berlin won the Class M
peraug, which headed into the matchup with the unusual record of 8-2-7. “Their seven ties and eight wins are against quality, quality teams. It’ll be a tough game.” Yanosy was right about that.
Berlin and Pomperaug battled through regulation and one overtime period with the game a scoreless tie. Midway through the second OT, Pomperaug broke the stalemate and drove away from Sage Park with a 1-0 victory.
The Redcoats earned a second-round date with No. 3 Platt Tech (13-2-1) Sunday afternoon at Jonathan Law High School in Milford. “That’s asking a lot,” Francalangia said of playing tournament games on consecutive days, “but these boys are ready. We haven’t played in two weeks, and they’re fired up; especially after tonight. Hopefully we’ll come back strong.” Francalangia’s troops didn’t disappoint.
Alex Bednarek netted two goals, and Brajan Cano and Ben Tencza each tallied one as Berlin downed Platt Tech, 4-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. The Redcoats were slated to face the winner of No. 6 Avon vs. No. 11 Bethel on the road Wednesday, after press time. Check out tournament updates at myrecordjournal.com/berli ncitizen, or on The Citizen Facebook page.
crown in 2009, blasting Bethel 46-6. It was the first time the Redcoats won a state title after losing their five previous appearances. Berlin lost title games to Daniel Hand of Madison 2016 in 1977, lost 3-0 to The Morgan School of Clinton in 1987, lost 35-22 to Darien in 1991, lost 36-18 to Middletown in 1992, and the one that rankles most, lost to Ledyard 2114 in 2007. It rankles because Berlin believes to this day — and with considerable justi-
fication — that it scored a touchdown late, but the officials ruled that the Berlin ballcarrier fumbled before he crossed the goal line, a view that perhaps only the officials held. But no matter, as Capodice said, the past is done and the goal is to go 1-0 each week. That means New Britain. Then Capodice hopes his team can go 1-0 three more times. Do that, and Berlin will own another state title.
