Rosso replaces new judge Murphy By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
Deputy Mayor Kevin Murphy resigned from the Town Council April 1 to prepare for his new position as a superior court judge. Murphy’s nomination for the position was announced by Gov. Dannel Malloy’s office March 14. “It is an honor to be nominated by Governor Malloy to serve the people of Connecticut as a Superior Court Judge,” Murphy said at the time. Murphy was congratulated by all six other members of the council. Councilor William Rasmussen said that the state would be getting a great judge. As the Town Charter specifies, when a position of elected office is vacated, the council must appoint a replacement of the same political party. Murphy’s appointed replacement, Peter Rosso, is also of the Democratic Party, which will leave the political party representation on the council unchanged.
Mayor Rachel Rochette appointed Democrat William Rasmussen to replace Murphy as Deputy Mayor. Rosso was approved unanimously by the council. “When the mayor called me about the position, it took me about 12 seconds to say yes,” said Rosso, who is eager to return to public service. Rosso is a lifelong Berlin resident. The veteran lawmaker previously served on several boards and commissions, and was Berlin’s state representative in the Connecticut State legislature, where he served on the transportation committee. Rosso’s legislative duties, for example, included debating legislature regarding drivers’ license regulations concerning eye exams in 1985. The Town Council also voted unanimously to authorize Town Manager Denise McNair to enter into an agreement to purchase 71 acres of land as Open Space, spending money obtained through an Open See Rosso / Page 6

Malloy also emphasized the importance of investing in STEM fields to graduate more engineers from Connecticut colleges. Malloy said that Pfizer has hired two hundred more people in the last year, and credited Connecticut’s skilled labor force with the multinational pharmaceutical corporation’s continuing business operation in Connecticut. “Engineering degrees are so important in our state. In the last few years, we have retired engineers more quickly than we have graduated engineers. That’s a disaster,” Malloy said. He argued STEM education is important because Connecticut is competing not only with Texas and California for jobs, but also labor forces overseas. “I’m happy to receive this award and it is shared with the legislators I have the pleasure of working with,” Malloy said.

community. “One of the guys at Central Pizza still remembers when he was in fifth grade and his D.A.R.E. instructor was Lt. [Jim] Goslin,” Detective Doug Bartolomeo of the Berlin P.D. said. Years later, kids still remember and reach out to the officers that taught their classes. “It’s a solid relationship,” said Bartolomeo, a veteran D.A.R.E officer. “Even some of those kids who end up in a bit of hot water down the road, they always remember their D.A.R.E instructor. It’s always a good thing for the kids, and it’s great for the officers in town as well.” All five elementary schools in town – including two private schools – do the full 10-week D.A.R.E. course. Although D.A.R.E is most known for its efforts in drug prevention, the program also seeks to help kids build relationships with local police officers and to learn “skills to make all the tough decisions
to lead their lives… to help them lead a happy, productive life without violence, drugs, or anything else along those lines,” Bartolomeo said. The program, started by Los Angeles police officers in 1983, gives kids frank discussion of how to deal with stress and peer pressure, seeking to address some of the underlying issues that can lead to substance abuse. The curriculum is developed with the help of educational, scientific, youth, and law enforcement advisory boards. Officers volunteer to become D.A.R.E. instructors, Bartolomeo said. “We wouldn’t have the D.A.R.E program without the Budney family,” he added. The support the Berlin P.D. receives makes it possible to give T-shirts and awards to graduating students, and to hold a yearly essay contest where students write about decision-making skills and what the program has taught them. “We see kids wearing the shirts years later,” Bartolomeo said.

Obituaries Allen D. Watrous, Sr. Dolores moved to Florida Teresa M. (Bober) where they lived an active Soliwoda KENSINGTON life in The Mainlands, where — Allen D. “Doug” Watrous, Sr., of Kensington, and Pinellas Park, Fla., passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, in Florida. He was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Middletown, to Earle D. and Ada (Burckel) Watrous. He joined the U.S. Army after high school in New Britain, and was in basic training in Brooklyn, N.Y., when he met his future bride, Dolores. He served in Korea during the war as a tank retriever and mechanic. Returning home, he worked at B.W. Brown as a teamster. After marriage, Doug and Dolores moved to Kensington. Soon after, daughter Beth arrived, and then son, Doug, Jr. He loved camping with his family and friends all over our beautiful country, square dancing, sharing “garage beer” with Bernard Road buddies, the UCONN men’s and women’s basketball teams, and restoring old cars, especially a 1930 Ford Model A with Doug, Jr. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Paul Church in Kensington, was Scout Master for Troop 24 there, and worked for the parish school for a few years after retiring. Doug was also a member of the VFW and American Legion; the Breath-Takers at Hospital for Special Care, New Britain; and Sacred Heart Church, Pinellas Park, Fla. After retiring, Doug and
Doug served as president of the Men’s Club, and from where they were able to continue their travels, especially on cruises with family and friends. Doug loved his home looking out on the golf course. He felt blessed that God had given him 85 wonderful years, and that he was able to have his 60 year marriage blessed by the bishop at St. Jude’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg. A wonderful and loving husband, dad, and “Papa”, Doug is survived by his wife, Dolores; daughter, Beth; and son, Doug, Jr. and his wife, Robyn. His great joy was his granddaughter, Amanda, with whom he shared a birthday; from teaching her to ride her bike without training wheels, to watching her compete in local and state swim meets, and spending extra time with her this year on weekend breaks from her studies at the University of Tampa. A funeral Mass with full military honors was held on Friday, March 28, at Sacred Heart Church, Pinellas Park, Fla. Memorial donations may be sent to Special Care Breath-Takers, Hospital for Special Care, 2150 Corbin Ave., New Britain, CT 06053, Attn: Janet Bowen, or Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 5771 Roosevelt Boulevard, Clearwater, FL 33760 – or give online at: www.thehospice.org/Donate. Mark Buckley Michelle was a true scholar-athlete, excelling in both volleyball and softball. In volleyball, Michelle was a Northwest Conference All-Star on two separate occasions. However, it was on the softball diamond where Michelle really stood out. Upon the graduation of 20-game winner Anne Regan, Bedard Pascetta took over the top spot in the pitching rotation and helped lead the team to back-to-back state championships. In the team’s 1987 Class M state semifinal win over North Branford, Coach Parciak was forced to call upon Bedard Pascetta –his “ace in the hole,” as he commonly referred to her –when the starter allowed five straight batters to reach base in the crucial sixth inning. The game went into extra innings, with Michelle retiring the last 13 batters she faced as Berlin came out on top 7-4. “Michelle made one of the gutsiest performances I’ve ever seen,” Parciak said. The win enabled the team to move on in the tournament, where it defeated Stonington
for the state championship. Michelle was recognized for her achievements, as she was named to the Northwest Conference All-Star team, and was twice named to the Hartford Courant/CHSCA All-State team. In 1987, she was a CHSCA All-Star, the Redcoat Award winner for softball, and a CASS/CIAC scholar-athlete. Michelle went to Central Connecticut State University, where she played softball for three years under Ronald Pringle, who was inducted into the Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame in 1992. Bedard Pascetta resides in Glastonbury with her husband, Michael, and two children, Daniel and Nicole. She is employed at Church Homes, Inc. Congregational in Hartford as the director of budgeting and reimbursement. The Hall of Fame induction dinner and ceremony will be held April 27 at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. Throughout history, public health has made tremendous strides in food safety, occupational safety, motor vehicle safety, control of infectious diseases, vaccination, fluorination of water, infant and maternal health, and modifying behavior to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In recognition of the importance of public health, Mayor Rachel Rochette of Berlin, Mayor Stephen Woods of Newington, Mayor Henry Vasel of Rocky Hill and Mayor Paul Montinieri of Wethersfield have signed proclamations to declare National P ublic Health Week. To increase the public’s awareness of the importance of public health, April 7 through 13 is designated as National Public Health Week, according to the American Public Health Association. The theme “Public Health: Start Here” focuses on the role of public health and prevention in the new world of health care delivery. The public health system that keeps communities healthy and safe is changing as technologies advance, public attitudes toward health shift and more health and safety options become more available through policy changes, such as the Affordable Care Act. Public health works to protect and improve the health of communities around the nation through preventative medicine, health education, control of communicable diseases, emergency preparedness coordination, application of sanitary measures and monitoring of environmental hazards.

Sports Let the games begin: BHS spring sports preview By Nate Brown
The Berlin Citizen
Baseball Coach: Leo Veleas (27th season). Assistants: Frank Naples, Nick Pepe, John Jacko (statistician). Last season: After finishing the regular season 13-7, the boys lost to Waterford, 7-2, in the Class L quarterfinals. Key losses: Connor Bennett, the team’s number one pitcher, graduated. This season: Senior co-captains Mitch Williams and Kyle Naples will lead a senior-laden team. Senior Greg Konowski will look to hold down the fort at first base, while seniors Dave Condon and Daren Grabowski will patrol the outfield. Outlook: Veleas has
the
plenty more talent at his disposal, yet simply hasn’t found the ideal lineup or positioning for all of his athletes. Seniors Dan McLeod, Dante Vasi and Mike Veronesi will all play a major part in Berlin’s success this year, wherever they stand in the field. Analysis: The team has plenty of talent, regardless of what lineup Veleas puts on the field. It may take a couple of games to find a groove, but a performance similar to last season’s output is very attainable, while the team could make just as much noise in the playoffs, if not more. Softball Coach: Jason Pires (11th season). Assistants: Joy Cooper, Johnathan Guerrero (JV coach), Rocco Labbadia. Last season: The girls fin-
New
of
ished a fantastic 17-3 in the regular season, making it all the way to the Class L semifinals before falling to eventual-champion Masuk, 2-1. Key loss: First baseman Katherine Burek. This season: Two returning All-State players, seniors Makayla Harris (pitcher) and Courtney Silvia (centerfield), will look to lead an almost identical squad to greater heights. Other standouts for the team include seniors Brittany Sullivan (shortstop), Megan Wicander (leftfield), and three-year starter Amanda Patterson (catcher), while junior Katie Gould (third base) will look to help fill the “power bat” void left by Burek. Outlook: While a state title would be ideal, the team’s first and biggest goal is to win the CCC South Division,
having placed second the past few seasons. Analysis: One would be hard-pressed to find a more experienced team in the area, which bodes well for the girls. Success in the CCC South Division and state tournament appears inevitable. Girls golf Coach: Jim Barnes. Assistant: Mitch Egarzarian. Last season: The girls won their third straight state championship, powering past their opponents with a score of 358, 12 strokes better than runners-up Staples and Greenwich. Key losses: Senior standouts and co-captains Caroline D’Attilio and EmilyAnne Deustch. This season: Conference and state medalist Julia Kemmling returns for only
her junior season. Fellow junior Ashley D’Attilio joins her, and the two will lead a squad with plenty of depth. Outlook: Without a single senior on the roster, this young team will look to make it four in a row. Juniors Abby Underwood and Emma Atkinson will look to step up into the other top two scoring positions for the squad, while several other up-and-coming golfers –junior Theo Tomasitis, and sophomores Angie Perrone, Alex Perrone, Megan Pskowski, and Carolyn Stickel –will battle for the fifth spot. Analysis: This brigade of juniors will look to turn this team into their own: a strong, cohesive unit that can play with the best of them. Talk of a fourth straight See Preview / Page 18

championship will follow these girls all season long, and rightfully so. Boys golf Coach: John Line (7th season). Last season: The Redcoats walked away with the school’s first CCC Tournament championship. They were also the first team outside of the CCC West Division to win the crown. Key losses: Three key cogs to the team’s success left via graduation: Nick Martino, Geoff Magisano and Ryan Marquis. This season: Austin Forauer is a returning AllState athlete, and is joined by fellow seniors Brian Bostrom and Chris Samiotis, who provide great leadership. Outlook: The three seniors will be looked to to keep the team on track as it strives to win the CCC South. While there aren’t any sophomores with varsity experience, it could be a nice breakthrough year for William Friday and Brandon Funari, two of Berlin’s seven
underclassmen. Analysis: Forauer seems due for another fantastic season, which should help to set the tone for the next generation of Berlin golfers, regardless of what the team’s record shows. Boys track and field Coach: Rick Hanbury (21st season). Assistant: Connor Green. Last season: Berlin finished with a 4-4 regular season record, and placed 27th at the Class MM championships with three points. Key losses: Top sprinters Matt Kall and Michael Pomian graduated from the 4x100 meter relay team that scored all of Berlin’s points at states. This season: The Redcoats will look to a trio of seniors, James Dwyer (distance), Karol Nowaleniec (high jump) and Ryan Verlund (high jump/long jump), to lead. Outlook: Competing in a tough CCC South Division, last year’s 4-4 record could have easily been a 6-3 mark in just about any other division.

finished 6-9-1, making the Class M state tournament, where it was bounced from the qualifying round by Guilford, 18-6. Key losses: Berlin lost 14 players to graduation, including Carolyn Bernucca, Cassidy Goodwin, Bianca Jacques, Brittany Nemphos, Lauren Criniti and Lindsey Stefens. The team will also be without senior goalie Kas Colasanti, who is sidelined with an injury. This season: The squad will look to the seniors, Gabriella Bierwirth, Kelly Shea, Colleen Padykula, Jessica Halas and Deanna Sobilo, to provide leadership on the turf. Juniors Olivia Martino and Erin Goodwin form a dynamic one-two punch. Outlook: Sheehan is looking for a .500 season and getting to the first round of the state tournament, hoping to avoid the gauntlet of qualifying round games. Analysis: Losing 14 players will hurt. Losing the next starting goalie could hurt even more. Yet this is a team that put in the type of offseason effort that separates the almost-.500 teams from the above-.500 teams. Boys tennis Coach: Rex Smith. Last season: The team failed to qualify for states, finishing 8-10 on the season. Current senior Dan Rombola lost 6-0, 6-1 in the Class M singles tournament championship to Bradley Orban of Foran. Key losses: The Redcoats said goodbye to two seniors, Peter Hogan and Jaydip Patel. This season: Rombola returns, with a bevy of seniors by his side: nine in total, including Rich Schlicting, Brian Kennure, Andrew 1270581 60974R

Hanbury is shooting for a .500 record this spring. Analysis: The always-tough Middletown Blue Dragons and Bristol Central Rams aren’t surrendering the division’s top two spots anytime soon, leaving third place up for grabs year in and year out. With a Redcoat squad that features only nine seniors, it will take a total team effort to make a run at finishing strong. Girls track and field Coach: Steve Soucy. Assistant: Josh Rosek. Last season: The Lady Redcoats finished 13th at the Class MM championships with 26 points. Key loss: Mid-distance runner Catherine Voelpel, who helped the girls claim 16 points at states. This season: Senior Sam Carbonell will look to lead the team after a strong indoor season. She’ll be joined by standout sophomore Michelle Grieco, who also had an impressive indoor campaign. Outlook: The girls have an up-and-coming contingent of underclassmen, including Grieco, Lisa Grieco, Sarah Daddario, Taylor Budney and Sophia Morell. With only eight seniors on the squad, there will be plenty of opportunities for the underclassmen to prove themselves. Analysis: It may be difficult to finish as high as 13th again at this year’s state finals, but pay attention now; this team could be very dangerous with another year of seasoning. Girls lacrosse Coach: Bridget Sheehan (1st season). Assistant: Kristen Angeletti. Last season: The squad

Chyra and Eric Kemmling. Outlook: Finishing one win short of qualifying for states last season (a .500 record is needed) must have left a sting that lasted the whole winter. Berlin’s other seniors, Mike Gurrieri, Reid Hilbie, Kris Langevin and Zach Mayer, also won’t be quick to forget just how close they were as they battle through a scrappy CCC schedule in the hopes of making it to the postseason. Analysis: With Rombola leading the way, and eight other seniors returning to join him, this squad is laden with experience and drive. Look for the Redcoats to get to the state tournament.

That’s the future of Timberlin, and that’s the future of the game,” Bayram said. “We’ve hosted a tournament the past couple years for Ryan Lee, a junior tournament the last few years at the end of June, and we’re hosting it again as a two-day event this year, and we’ll get over 100 juniors from over the state to com1270340

Residents were glad to be back out on the links playing the game they love. “For us, it’s just the good weather and [being able to] golf again,” said Andy Biskup, a regular at Timberlin for more than 15 years. “It’s the finest public golf course in the state, without a doubt,” Jerry Pangakis, an70753R
Friday, April 4, Timberlin Golf Course opened to the public for the first time in 2014, ushering in a new season while saying goodbye to a cruel winter. “We’ve been ready to open the doors for awhile,” Timberlin head golf professional Marc Bayram said. “It’s been a very long winter, a very cold winter. Snow has been on the ground almost all winter. In my four seasons, this is definitely the latest we’ve opened, but it feels good to open the doors and it shows that the crowd is chomping at the bit to get out there.” Timberlin’s opening was delayed by a lengthy winter solstice that stretched into the first few weeks of spring. There was still snow on the course as recently as two days prior to opening day. “We’re very lucky that there was no ice damage to the greens because of the cold winter,” Bayram said. “Our staff here didn’t have the same amount of time as a normal winter where they can get out there, but they do a phenomenal job, especially with the limited staff they have. It is looking great.” The season officially began with Bayram’s ceremo-

That’s where most of our senior club members bring their grandchildren out for a special day of golf; there’s no competition, it’s really just about the camaraderie and the families being together.” Visit Timberlin online at www.timberlingolf.com.
