Though docile, beavers can wreak havoc By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

As the beaver population in Connecticut continues to increase, some homeowners are seeing firsthand the impressive changes in local geography America’s largest rodent is capable of causing. Berlin’s Animal Control Officer Jan Lund said that there are “occasional calls here and there” about beavers in Berlin. If the call concerns a sick beaver, Animal Control takes the animal to a veterinarian. If they are building dams or felling trees in a way that causes property

destruction, callers are referred to DEEP. “Beaver/human conflicts have been increasing in recent years,” according to DEEP, due to humans moving into wildlife habitat as well as the recovery of the beaver population. Beavers were extirpated in Connecticut in the mid 1800’s, but since reintroduction efforts that began in 1914, the population has recovered to the point where regulated trapping has been allowed since 1961. DEEP receives hundreds of complaints about beavers

annually. Beavers are normally docile, but may slap the water with their tail to warn people and other animals away from getting too close to their lodge. “In many circumstances, people experience relatively insignificant beaver damage,” DEEP says, “tolerating

be valued at anywhere between $18 and $28. Beavers are also prized by many for their succulent meat. The value of the fur can help cover the cost of traps and equipment, but Perrault said that he and the other volunteers do it “out of love for the sport, 100 percent.” Perrault said he finds the task very rewarding, that’s why he and other volunteers help trap beavers year-round. The fur is far less valuable outside of the trapping season in the fall and winter. Timely removal of beavers can prevent headaches for landowners, and in some cases may even save small farming operations that would be threatened by flooding. Alternatives to trapping, like water level control devices, can cost as much as $1,000. “That can be lot of money to a local farmer,” Perrault said. There are no known effective beaver repellents, and harassment is rarely effective in getting them to abandon a site, according to DEEP.

their activity is part of co-existing with wildlife.” However, DEEP also notes that beavers may cause problems, including millions of dollars of property damage from flooding and falling trees nationwide. For property owners with beavers on their property, there may also be concerns about increasing mosquito populations because of the increase in stagnant water, or a temporary but unpleasant smell of rotten eggs caused by flood-related decomposition. Giardia, a micro-organism that thrives in stagnant water and causes intestinal infections in humans and other animals, may also be a concern. When property owners want to remove beavers from their property, DEEP refers them to volunteers like Jules Perrault of Wallingford. “We have about 120 volunteers in the area,” Perrault said. “We have a special permit from the state to trap beavers in the off-season.” Trappers like Perrault benefit from the fur, which can

Autism event gets support from local business

ACS seeks drivers The American Cancer Society believes cancer patients in Hartford County may be at risk of missing medical care. There is currently a need in this area for drivers for the ACS’s Road to Recovery program. The program offers transportation to and from treatment for people who have cancer and do not have a ride or are unable to drive. Residents who are interested in volunteering or know of someone who may benefit from this free service are asked to call the American Cancer Society at (800) 227-2345.

Rios said. “It’s a huge relief for these families to get assistance. We have immediate family and close family friends who deal with this issue, and being able to support them is huge.” Autism, or “autism spectrum disorder” is a general term for a range of complex conditions relating to brain development. Autistic individuals differ from “neurotypical” individuals in varying ways. In some cases, affected individuals may need significant help with speech, social skills, or fine motor skills. Sometimes, individuals may also manifest “savant” traits, such as the ability to quickly calculate the day of the week based on the calendar date. According to the Innovative

Autism Network, based in Plainville, autism is “on the rise.” IAN works with families to provide various services, including diagnosis, consultations, speech therapy, social skill therapy with peer models, and occupational therapies. The organization was

April is Autism Awareness month and Berlin Lunchbox owners Jamie Lovejoy and Ramon Rios are seeking to raise awareness of this often misunderstood spectrum of conditions. “Having an autistic kid isn’t cheap,” Lovejoy said. Lovejoy and Rios have been wearing ribbon pins in support of Autism Awareness and are supporting a fundraiser at City Steam Brewery Café

and Restaurant in Hartford Sunday, April 27. Lovejoy, a culinary school graduate with a specialty in baking, is donating a custom cake big enough to serve more than 100 people at the event. “I love kids, so anything I can do to help autistic kids is a huge honor,” Lovejoy said. Ron’s Automotive celebrates business milestone By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

928 Farmington Avenue has provided Berlinites with motor vehicle services since the days of Henry Ford, and Ron’s Automotive, housed at the location, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The original sales room now holds a 1914 Ford Model T, on display along with a 1952 replica MG. Gaetgens took over the business in 2000, when his father retired, and credits the continued success of the business, in part, to a focus on giving customers what they need. Ron’s Automotive has changed with the times, and “The whole automotive industry has changed immensely in the past years,” Gaetgens said. The past five years have been the best ever, repair work-wise, for Ron’s Automotive, but the used car market has changed such that Gaetgens said he is much See Ron’s / Page 5

Board of Education President Gary Brochu said 85 percent of the BOE budget is teachers, administrators, and other personnel. Brochu said this is the highest driver of the budget, and

that in the last four budget years, every employee group has received salary freezes at some point, and that in the past year, administrators, including union workers, received salary freezes. Insurance costs are increasing, and the board reduced these increases by renegotiating with BlueShield as well as increasing employee premiums. A large driver of the budget was also tuition, which includes students who require special education services the town cannot provide. This cost can be as much as six figures per student, Brochu said, and the other increase was in magnet school tuition, which Berlin cannot negotiate and is contractually obligated to pay when a student elects to attend a magnet school. cuts would occur in personnel,” said Brochu, who continued that a zero increase budget would result in cuts of additional personnel or programs. Members of the public spoke both for and against cutting the budget further. Former mayor Arthur Powers spoke against a zero increase budget, saying that further cuts would hurt the town and the schools. Some citizens argued that further cuts would amount to the equivalent of a cup of coffee every week. Others said that the budget has consistently grown every year and that the town government needs to stop growing. Some speaking for further cuts argued that the economy is in poor shape and that wages in Connecticut have been stagnant as cost of living has increased. Several members of the Berlin High School junior class spoke against further cuts. Corey Whiteside spoke on behalf of the Berlin Property Owner’s Association and argued for a change to the town charter that would give more binding power to the annual budget referendum.

Opinion Letters to the editor Feel the burn?

A good budget for Berlin

PET OF THE WEEK

To the editor: Ten years ago, first-term mayor Adam Salina (D) proposed his first of 10 yearly tax increases on the citizens of Berlin. He justified it by explaining to the press, “It’s just a cup of coffee a day.” Fast-forward to the April 8 budget hearing where former councilman Bob Dacey (D) lectured the same scheme, kicking off Mayor Rachel Rochette’s (D) first term. Funny how the liberal majority conveniently forget to mention the other 10 “cup of coffee a day” yearly tax increases. So what are we paying now? It’s not just the extra dollar a day, it now adds up to thousands more per year since 2004. Like a frog in a slowly heated pot, the liberals once again are turning the heat up hoping you won’t feel the burn. Don’t let Rochette and cohorts reset the tax baseline. Vote no on the budget referendum April 29. Joan Veley Former Town Councilor

To the editor: I would like to thank everyone who attended, and everyone who spoke, at the Budget Hearing on April 8. Sports ’Coats Notes

Hall of Fame: Wenzel, Clifford

Week 1 brought many positive results By Nate Brown The Berlin Citizen

Girls golf The BHS girls golf team began its title defense with a 191-219 victory over Farmington at Timberlin Golf Course. The team was led by junior Ashley D’Attilio, who medaled with a score of 43. Fellow juniors Julia Kemmling (44), Emma Atkinson (51) and Abbie Underwood (53) all had strong rounds to help the locals outlast the Indians, as the girls battled through winds up to 35 miles per hour to start the season off on the right foot. Boys golf The BHS boys golf team wasn’t as fortunate as their female counterparts, falling to Northwest Catholic by a slim margin, 166-171, in their season opener. Yet while the outcome wasn’t ideal, the season is young, and a team featuring All-State senior Austin Forauer, as well as seniors Brian Bostrom and Chris Samiotis should soon see the wins start to pile up. Girls tennis The Lady Redcoats began their season with a 1-1 week following a 5-2 home win against Rocky Hill and a tough 5-2 loss to East Catholic on the road. The girls’ next match won’t be until April 21, a home matchup against Simsbury, which should give the team plenty of time to continue to jell as a team, including the newly refined doubles teams. Boys tennis After falling to a difficult Conard team 7-2 to open the season, the BHS boys responded by capturing a 4-3 victory against Brookfield before falling 6-1 in their home opener against East

Catholic. The boys came away with the “W” over Brookfield after all four singles players won their individual matches, with sophomore Jordan Chyra winning a difficult three-set match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Senior captain Dan Rombola won all three of his matches last week. Track and field The BHS boys and girls teams started the season strong with wins by both squads over Bulkeley. The boys walked away with a convincing win, 9823, while the girls ran away with an even more convincing victory, 112-33. After only finishing 4-4 in the difficult CCC South last year, the boys got off to a hot start thanks to a collective effort of athletes, including James Dwyer and Ryan Verlund. As for the girls, the victory is a strong start for what was thought to be a rebuilding season. Boys lacrosse The Redcoats got off to a hot start for the season, winning 15-5 in their season-opener against Watertown, yet fell back to .500 with a tough 10-7 loss to Farmington. In the victory, the team was led by a bevy of hat trick performances from four different individuals: seniors Ben Tomascak and Jordan Kradas, junior Cam Criniti, and sophomore Garrett Guite. Senior Nick Waznia (two goals) and junior Kevin Rulka also found the back of the net for the Redcoats. Senior Matt Cote recorded 10 saves to come away with his first win in net. Scot Wenzel Scot Wenzel, Class of 1989 Scot had an outstanding career in both football and basketball. In football, he was a threeyear starter with a team career record of 25-6. He was a two-time All-Northwest Conference selection as a defensive back and once as a quarterback. He was the last player to be selected All-NWC on both sides of the ball. As a senior, Scot was a AllState selection as a defensive back. As a quarterback, he set the school record for touchdown passes in a season, and also set the school record for interceptions as a defensive back. The 1987 BHS football team, Scot’s sophomore year, was the state runner up. In basketball, Scot was a four-year letterman. He was a captain his senior year and an All-Northwest Conference selection, leading the team in 3-pointers. He averaged 15.4 points per game as a senior, dropping a career-high 30 points that season. Scot received both the Redcoat and the Bill Gibney awards his senior year. Scot went on to Southern Connecticut State University where he played football as a free safety. After graduation, Scot began his coaching career. He was a head basketball coach for 14 years with 164

Josh Clifford career wins while coaching in Massachusetts and Connecticut. He was named the Massachusetts Coach of the Year and the Cape Cod Coach of the Year while coaching in Mashpee, Mass., taking a team comprised of only six players that had never made the state playoffs, to the State South Sectional finals two years in a row. S co t m ove d ba c k to Connecticut and became the head basketball coach at Newington High in 2003, winning the CCC South championship in 2005. Scot was selected to coach the Connecticut Senior AllStar team in 2009, and was named the New Britain Herald Head Coach of the Season in 2010. While at Newington, Scot’s teams made the playoffs in nine of his 10 seasons. Scot teaches at Plainville High School and resides in Berlin with his wife, Kelly, and three daughters, Ashley, Jenna, and Alyssa. Josh Clifford, Class of 1992 Josh excelled in football and wrestling while a member of the Redcoats. His football achievements included being named captain of the freshman team and earning a varsity letter that same year. In 1990, he was a second-team All-State selection and an All-Northwest Conference pick. In 1991, he

was again selected all-conference, and was named to the New Haven Register AllState team. Also, he was an Associated Press All-State selection, named to the coach’s poll All-State team, a USA Today All-American honorable mention, and the Atlantic Touchdown Club Lineman of the Year selection. He also received the Coach’s Award for football. In wrestling, Josh was a three-time Northwest Conference champion, a three-time Class M state champion, a State Open champion, and a threetime qualifier for the New England championship. In 1990, he was the New England freestyle champion at 275 pounds and a member of the Junior National team. During his senior year, he was a high school AllAmerican at 275 pounds, placed fourth at nationals and wrestled with Team USA against Cuba. Josh received a full scholarship to Boston University for football, and became a successful business owner following graduation. The Hall of Fame induction dinner is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. For ticket information, contact Diane Egazarian: (860) 402-1169; degazarian@sbcglobal.net. six off his touchdown, and three points for three separate carries of 10 yards or more. “Max is doing a great job. He keeps the ball moving,” said Diaco. “You know, what happens is if the backs like Max –like Max does –if the back can get another yard at the end of the run…so at the end of three runs, he’s gotten three yards. So if that’s a lock where a ball carrier can finish forward, then we’re really working off of first down and seven, not first down and 10. So we only have to design plays to get seven yards, because guys like Max will get us the other three.” DeLorenzo’s performance proved to be more dynamic than that of his backfield mate Lyle McCombs, last season’s top rusher, who only finished the day with 35 yards on 10 carries. He only recorded one point for the

that could have fans soon thinking of gridiron success to add to the school’s hardwood hardware. In a designed offense vs. defense slugfest, the White defensive team walked away with a 46-37 victory over the offensive Blue side. “It was a great, very productive spring. The players have now slathered on another coat of paint,” said head coach Bob Diaco in regards to the team’s effort throughout the contest. “We’re nowhere near what the final product is going to look like, but we have another coat of paint on, for sure.” Berlin’s Max DeLorenzo had the most dynamic day of all the local talent, finishing the day with 51 yards rushing and a touchdown on only seven carries. DeLorenzo also scored nine total points for the Blue offensive team:

Blue team on a 15-yard run late in the second quarter. Yet while the two back’s running styles vastly diffe r f ro m o n e a n o t h e r, DeLorenzo thinks that it’s the right combination to ultimately get the job done of winning football games. “I believe me and Lyle are a good one-two and we complement each other very nicely,” DeLorenzo said. “I think it puts a lot of pressure on the defense and gives them different looks.” Connecticut is expecting three more linebackers to join the squad, as well as three fresh new faces in the stable of backs, including Arkeel Newsome of Ansonia and Ron Johnson of Suffield Academy. “I’m going into my last two seasons. I’ve played, so obviously I feel like a veteran,” DeLorenzo said. “I’m always willing to help and mentor the younger kids, but at the same time, I’m trying to be that guy; I’m trying to play and contribute to the team. “I come every day wanting to get better, contribute to the team, and do what I did last year, plus more.”
