“Tim did a fine job,” said Superintendent of Schools David Erwin. “Certainly I think Matt will too.” The board unanimously

elected Kari Sassu to take over Tencza’s former position as school board secretary.

Tencza and Jaymee Miller were both re-elected to the board on Nov. 8. Also at the Nov. 28 meeting, newly-elected member Jake Fisher began his term. He replaces William Rasmussen, who recently stepped down.

Berlin High School students Jasmine Nappi, a junior, and Steven Bordonaro, a senior, became the first student representatives on the board. “I think they’ll add a nice dimension,” Erwin said. New BHS representatives will be chosen by a school election each school year. — Ashley Kus

Timberlin closes after bonus week of golf Timberlin season pass holders carded a small victory recently when the Parks & Recreation Commission voted to honor their passes for as long as the municipal golf course stayed open for the year. Nov. 30 had been the original end date on season passes, but golfers pushed back and town officials relented. As it turned out, however, the Parks & Recreation Commission’s decision only bought Timberlin season pass holders one extra week on the links. Timberlin closed for the season on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

“Due to the potential for a wintery mix on Tuesday evening, and the cold temperatures that are forecasted for the end of this week, we will be closing the course for the season at the end of the day on Tuesday, December 6, 2016,” Jonathan Zuk, director of golf operations at Timberlin, wrote in an email message. “From The staff at Timberlin, Head Golf Professional Marc Bayram, and myself, we would like to wish you and your family Happy Holidays.” With their season passes set to expire at the end of November, Timberlin golfers

pressed the Town Council and Parks & Recreation Commission to extend the passes right up until the New Year, which is usually the case. Addressing the matter in a press release, Parks & Recreation Commissioner Len Zielinski stated, “While other courses in the area continue to have their passes run through the end of the year, the P&R Commission didn’t feel constrained to follow the same path and felt the need to try something new to help achieve the balance of our taxpaying golfers and the net operating cost to Berlin.”

The November cut-off was implemented with a new fee schedule at the beginning of the year. Only recently, however, with winter setting in, did Timberlin season pass holders put up a fight. Aggravated golfers said they felt cheated, and if the passes were not extended, they would wrap up 2016 playing elsewhere. “I bought a season pass in good faith,” said Jim Norton, a Berlin golfer. “This is very shortsighted what you’re doing.”

after Nov. 30,” said Gerry Paradis, a member of the Timberlin Men’s Club. The Parks & Recreation Commission pushed back a bit against such comments, pointing out that season pass applications plainly stated the Nov. 30 expiration date. Still, on Monday, Nov. 28, the commission agreed to honor passes as long as Timberlin remained open for the season, per usual. – Nick Carroll Premium Landscape & Construction Materials • High Quality Organic Topsoil

Tips for selecting your Christmas tree been sold and where trees are shaded. Ask the retailer whether his trees are delivered once at the beginning of the season or are they delivered at different times during the selling season.

Selecting and setting up a Christmas tree is all part of the seasonal fun, but as the centerpiece of holiday decorations for many homes a little extra preparation can help you make the most of your unique display.

Freshness matters

Where to buy

Choose a fresh tree. A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree. It is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off.

Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. Place the tree clear of doors.

Available space Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car.

Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go six to eight hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don’t bruise the cut surface or get it dirty.

Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed.

Use of lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, will reduce drying of the tree.

If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water.

Keep trees away from major sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day.

To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide one quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are

The only requirements for host families to provide are a private bed-

room for the player and use of a bathroom and kitchen. Any other amenities that families are willing and able to offer are appreciated by the player and team. Team vs. Time offers customers an ‘escape’ A rotary phone and a full-size suit of armor greet customers in the lobby of Team vs. Time on New Britain Road in Berlin. Beyond the lobby are several rooms where players must solve clues within an hour in order to escape. “It’s a very unique experience,” said Josh Becker, an event specialist at Team vs. Time and a town resident. The new business is one of an increasing number of local escape rooms such as “Escape Room New Haven” in New Haven and “Quandary” in Wallingford. Team vs. Time currently features “Gangster’s Gamble” and “The Lost Book of Spells.” There is no actual timer to let players know when time is up. Letters to the Editor Support local business To the editor: I was happy to read Dr. Ann Aresco’s letter in The Citizen on Dec. 1. She wrote about the need for a grocery store that offers more healthy choices and applauded efforts by the owner of Ferndale Market Fresh on Chamberlain Highway to fill that need so we do not have to travel out of town.

local businesses. I recently attended a planning meeting on how to make our town more appealing. One factor raised by the consultants was that businesses do not want to move to Berlin unless they feel confident there is a market for their services and they can make a profit. We are a key to this commerce chain.

Another key is that often a space remains vacant because the rent is overpriced The previous owners put a for our town, yet some ownlot of time, effort and money ers put high profits over into transforming the old investment in the commuRoger’s Market into a fresh nity. Fortunately, a new owner Lorraine Stub was at hand, one with a Berlin network of Connecticut groceries. Berlinites often complain about a lack of shopping options in town, but if we truly care about that, we have a responsibility to patronize

Positive presence in town To the editor: Three cheers to Dr. Ann

Aresco for her remarks regarding the need for quality food locally available, and the opportunity to see Ferndale Market Fresh as a positive presence on the community scene [Letter to the Editor, Dec. 1]. Today it has become vital that “organic, non-GMO, locally grown and wild caught” foods take their place alongside the many conventional offerings available at a food market. Making them part of our diets can materially improve our personal health and vitality. Shopping for them near to our homes and businesses strengthens the local economy and reduces the time and energy needed to drive long distances. So requesting healthy foods from Edwin at Ferndale Market Fresh is something we can easily do to improve our family’s well-being while we improve the economic and environmental health of our community and the region.

Support animal shelters To the editor: May I make a plea to those of you who are incredibly kind and generous during the holiday season? If you are looking to make donations, please consider your local shelter or one of the many rescue organizations. If you are not familiar with any of our local rescues you can find information regarding them online, and many advertise animals for adoption in the local papers, or you may want to ask your Animal Control Officer who they work with. In most cases monetary donations are their first choice since many of these animals require medical care, but they usually have many additional items on their wish

list such as towels, blankets, beds, leashes, toys, food, cleaning supplies or possibly over-the-counter medial supplies. If you have time to give, there are dogs needing to be walked and cages needing to be cleaned. There also is a great need for fosters for both dogs and cats which can be so rewarding, especially when you see them go to their forever homes. Lastly, please do not forget our feral cat population. Many of the rescue organizations will give you instructions on how to help build shelters, feed them or possibly become involved with the TNR (trap/neuter/return) programs. Whatever you decide, I guarantee the shelters, rescues and animals will be forever grateful. Barbara Rudnick Berlin

There were snags, but Election Day turnout was impressive By Jeffery Kurz Editorial Page Editor

The power of social media that at least in part helped fuel Donald Trump’s phenomenal victory also played a remarkable role when it came to voter registration in Connecticut. About 200,000 registered online in 2016, including 15,000 who registered in just one day thanks to a Facebook link. People are used to getting things done with a click and there’s no reason registering to vote should be an exception. “It’s a tremendous tool,” Secretary of the State Denise Merrill observed during a recent visit to the Record-Journal. Also remarkable was the 40,000 who registered to vote through the Department of Motor Vehicles since August. If you were like me, you likely had doubts about turning over voter registration to an operation having famous difficulties getting your car registered or driver’s license renewed, but this worked out. Other pluses included 30,000 taking advantage of Election Day registration.

percentage of voters to those registered that year. It’s also more than those who voted in the 2012 presidential election year. There were snags. Election Day registration strained operations in New Haven (where Election Day resembled an episode of the Keystone Kops, the New Haven Independent observed), and, notably, Meriden, where there were long lines ahead of the 8 p.m. deadline. Merrill said extending the deadline would have meant delaying the reporting of election results. Though Election Day registration has been in place in Connecticut since 2013, this was the first presidential election, and Meriden should have been better prepared and properly staffed. There were dozens

In any case, while it’s your call whether or not you’re happy about the results of the election, what should be generally agreed upon is that it’s an impressive sign when more people are registering to vote and then voting. of people waiting to register in a long line at City Hall who weren’t able to cast their votes. Merrill said she’s often asked about early voting. Thirty-six states and Washington, D.C., offer some form of early voting that doesn’t require an excuse. Merrill would like to see Connecticut join those ranks. “I think the public is demanding it,” she said, “and when I see long lines it’s robbing people of the right to vote.”

Connecticut voter turnout was encouraging, at just under 77 percent, according to unofficial numbers sent over by Merrill’s office, with about 1,675,934 voting. That’s more than the 1,644,845 who voted in 2008 (the year of President Barack Obama’s first election), but just shy of the

It was not an encouraging election season at the national level when it came to voter confidence, what with a major party presidential contender (now president-elect) issuing warnings about a “rigged” process before the election and just recently claiming, without substantiation, he would have won the popular vote if it hadn’t been for “millions of people who voted illegally.” We’re going to have to get used to a president who tweets from the hip, I suppose, but it’s also going to take a lot of getting used to.

limits voting to Election Day, with early voting only by absentee ballots available to those who meet excuse requirements. So establishing early voting requires amending the constitution, which, as the Record-Journal’s Mike Savino wrote recently, “must get support of a two-thirds majority of each legislative chamber or simple majorities of consecutive sessions of the General Assembly before it can appear on the ballots in an even-year election.” That might seem like a tall challenge, particularly when you consider what might

Operation Fuel and its statewide network of fuel banks is accepting energy assistance applications from Connecticut households that are in danger of having their utility services terminated.

Flurry is an outgoing and comical boy. He was surrendered with his best buddy, Whiff, when a new baby was found to be allergic to pets. The pair should stay together. They lived with other cats, dogs and children. Flurry, black and white, is very socialable and funny, while Whiff, all black, is more reserved and keeps more to himself. Together they make a fun pair of cats to bring into your home. Online application is available at www.fobac.org
