Board of Education budget intact By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

“It’s just been amazing … it just makes you feel good, as a military mom,” said Karen Cote, president of Hero Boxes, which she says has sent over 600 boxes to soldiers like her son. Cote began sending boxes overseas every Thanksgiving after her son was deployed to Kuwait in 2015, with the shipments arriving just in time for him to distribute among his unit for Christmas. Last year’s event, which took place at the New Britain Veterans of Foreign Wars, brought out approximately 400 volunteers. The community wrapped more than 200 care packages Thanksgiving night 2017 at the New Britain VFW, an event organized by a Berlin resident.

polling numbers as he prepares to leave office at the end of the year, teasing critics in the room that he looked forward to “coming to your districts and campaigning for you.” For Malloy, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek a third term, Last week’s light-hearted approach to his final address contrasted with his often businesslike and sometimes critical demeanor toward lawmakers. While he’s been able to work with the General Assembly to pass measures like the bipartisan gun control bill following the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, he also has clashed at times with lawmakers over how best to handle the state’s long-running budget problems, which are expected to continue after he leaves office in January. “It’s very hard to change his mind when he thinks he’s right. But he does care deeply,” said Democratic House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, of Berlin, who said it was “important that (Malloy) closes out his career, talking to us in the Legislature.” Aresimowicz credited Malloy with making structural changes to state government, noting how none were “all that politically popular” See Malloy, A7

The revised budget stands at $44.6 million, as opposed to the $45.6 million budget rejected by referendum last month. but will put the state on better fiscal footing in the future. “Having that job is not easy for anybody, regardless of their political party and what they tried to do,” Aresimowicz said. Malloy’s final session-closing address comes days before Republicans and Democrats meet to endorse candidates who might replace him in January. It also comes as GOP contenders already have begun referencing Malloy in campaign advertising and speeches, capitalizing on his low public approval ratings.
Lomaglio said to make further cuts to the education budget, “what they have to do is they lay off teachers, they lay off administrators and they cut classes. Obituaries Genevieve T. (Zaniewski) Stachelek NEW BRITAIN — With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Genevieve Theresa (Zaniewski) Stachelek, 86, of Kensington. The dearly loved wife of the late Chester Stanley Stachelek for 59 ½ years, Genevieve passed peacefully from this life to Our Lord after a brief illness on May 12, 2018 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain, with her loving family surrounding her in her final days. Genevieve was born in New Britain, the daughter of the late Wladyslaw and Stasia (Koncewicz) Zaniewski. A former parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and Holy Cross Church, she graduated from Sacred Heart School and New Britain High School. She worked in bookkeeping/accounting at area businesses, banks, and the CT State Police Payroll Dept. “Jennie” lived in New Britain-Kensington her entire life and was a parishioner of St. Paul Church where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. Deeply devoted to her love Chet and her family, she enjoyed polka dancing, gardening, creating beautiful floral arrangements, and giving gifts creatively decorated. Later in life she loved coloring, watching Villanova basketball and happy movies, and visiting with friends and family at her favorite Bella’s Ristorante. Genevieve will be deeply missed by her daughter, Deborah (Stachelek) Sanders and husband, Douglas; her son, Stephen Stachelek and wife, Donna; her treasured grand-
children and great-grandchild: Jonathan Stachelek, his wife Elyse and their son Brayden Paul; James Stachelek; Lauren (Sanders) Rivera-Myers and her husband, Timothy; and Melissa Sanders and her fiancé Ryan Amspacher. She also leaves her sister Helen Grady, many nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was predeceased by family Stanislaw and Rozalja (Sokolowski) Stachelek, William Grady, Helen and Sylvio Beaulieu, and Stanley and Marjorie Koncewicz. BRICK BY BRICK
Ben Schulz of Boy Scout Troop 24, in Kensington, completed his Eagle Project on Sunday, May 6. Schulz directed a team of scouts and parents to recover brick pavers from the Kensington Congregational Parish Hall construction project. The scouts cleared the path to the outdoor chapel, spread 24 ton of stone dust for improved accessibility and built a brick stage area in
front of the communion table using the repurposed brick from the demolition zone. With over 120 hours of service, the project enhanced the access and appearance of the Kensington Congregational Church’s Chapel in the Woods for many years to come.

COMMENTARY
Facing the book of life Through the miracle of Facebook, I just found out that a total of 38 of my high school classmates (Berlin High School, class of 1966) have now expired. The latest to go was Henry P., who was killed when his Harley-Davidson ran off the road earlier this
month, in Hawai’i. In another era — B.F.: Before Facebook — I might never have found out about this, but today there are websites and Facebook sites for everything, and the folks who are really true to their school, the
ones who organize reunions and otherwise keep the homeroom fires burning, have ways of finding things out. (Ironic, perhaps, that we now use this state-of-theart technology to exchange information about a place and a time when everything was done the oldfashioned way — pen on paper, in rooms where sometimes the sweet, intoxicating smell of mimeograph fluid filled the air — and the highest-tech feature was the system that allowed someone in the Main Office to control the big, round IBM clocks in every classroom.)
Anyway, having known of a few others who are no longer with us — i n cl u d i ng Jon B. and Bob B. and Pete F. and Rhona M. and Carole P. and Glen T. and, of course, Charlotte W. — I had occasionally wondered how many from that group of 165 seniors might be gone (I suppose I could’ve spent a week digging through dusty closets for my old yearbook in order to count heads, but I went to the online version instead, natch), and I thought maybe the toll would be in the single digits, certainly no more than a dozen. Foolish me.
But 38? Eddie A. and Kenny D. and Scott G. and Doug L. and Ginny L. and Peggy J. and Sue N. and Sandy O. and Dave T., all gone now? So I expressed, again on Facebook, the idea that 38 dead out of 165 seemed shockingly high — that ’s 23 percent! — but I was immediately corrected when Garret C. (who’s not from my school but is very smart) had the nerve to post a chart from some university showing that the average life expectancy for people born in 1948 (which should cover most of my classmates) is 69.9 years for women and 64.6 years for men. And then I thought, “Land o’ G oshen! I’m already five years past my sell-by date!” I don’t often say “Land o’ G oshen!” for any reason, but that chart shows that I’m just so @#$&% old, which is not really what I wanted to hear.

And then my brother, another oldie from 1965, chimed in with the idea that his class isn’t necessarily healthier, just more virtuous. Right. And then I heard from my cousin Jan M., nee Jan R., who can do no wrong, that I’m not so @#$&% old after all. And she should know, because she’ll always be several hours older than me.

Local businesses lean into Memorial Day with promotion By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
on its bracelets for $5.26. “It’s our way of saying thank you.”
Dozens of businesses are getting involved in this year’s Memorial Day celebrations, offering $5.26 or $52.60 discounts for two weeks starting on the holiday to better welcome the public into their shops.
“We would take part in anything the town does, because we support this town. We feel that they support us in our mission and we want to support them,” Faucher said. “I think it’s very nice of the town to put something together that would give back to their citizens.”
“We want to give back to our customers who are constantly coming and shopping,” said Sharon Faucher, store manager of Good Cause Gifts, which will be offering a sale
“The idea really is to get people on the street,” said Economic Development Director Christopher Edge. He said he
hopes to see residents not only get some deals, but also to “get people out talking to each other.” Edge also would like to see businesses foster stronger community relationships between residents and other local companies they can partner with. “Many people in business, they’re working hard to keep the doors open. Maybe this will get them thinking more creatively,” he said. As an example, Edge said
health food stores could learn about gyms they could sell their wares at, which could attract more customers to work out there. “They’re very pleased, a number of them love the idea,” Edge said of the 31 businesses which have gotten involved as of Friday, May 11. “It’s a really nice economic circle of life that’s been growing in Berlin.” dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

Singers performing the National Anthem and America the Beautiful, and a rifle volley from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. The Air Force will also be making a return, with a flyover from a C-130, a fourpropeller transport plane which will cruise over Farmington Avenue.
“We try to make sure all our veterans will never be forgotten,” he said. “I’m pretty proud being here in Berlin.”
“It’s going to actually be one of the largest parades,” said Peter Galgano, secretary for the town’s Veterans’ Commission. He said after years of rain outs, businesses and civic groups were excited to
The parade will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church on Peck Strett, turning right onto Farmington Avenue and proceeding to Massirio Drive, where it will end at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park. Mayor Mark Kaczynski and Thomas J. Saadi, commissioner of the state Department of Veterans Affairs, will speak at a ceremony held at
the park, beginning at approximately 10 a.m. Saadi also serves as a major in the Army Reserves, which he has been a member of since 2005, and was previously the state’s assistant attorney general. The parade is important for remembering all that veterans have sacrificed, Colaresi said. He hopes to reinforce the distinction between Memorial Day, where fallen veterans are remembered, and Veterans Day, which thanks living veterans for their service.
The ceremony will be followed by the fire department’s annual Autorama Car Show at Sage Park, where half of the proceeds will be donated to the commission for veterans. The cancellations the town has been forced to make in past years was also behind the decision to move the parade to the Saturday before Memorial Day, with Monday, May 28, serving as a backup in case of inclement weather. dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

“It’s heartwarming, because everyday their lives are on the line,” said Christine Gagliardi, whose son Anthony Gagliardi serves in Iraq. “To get all these donations means the world to them.”
If you’ve ever tuned into the A&E television program Hoarders, it doesn’t take a genius to quickly realize, it’s going to take more than a bottle of Windex to clean up all the garbage, moldy food, and rotting animal poop that’s been accumulating in those houses for years and years and years… But some people accumulate health problems the same way, and unrealistically believe it will take just a visit or two at the Chiropractor’s to fix all their issues. From years of neglect, bad advice and denial, constant use of medication to mask their symptoms, their chronic illnesses pile up until they can no longer recognize the healthy state their body used to be in. By the time they decide to see a Chiropractor, they’ve got a real ‘disease hoarding’ problem and unfortunately a couple of adjustments isn’t enough to clean up the squalor. The goal of chiropractic isn’t to temporarily sweep your symptoms under a rug to make things look good on the surface, but to actually roll our sleeves up and get rid of the underlying clutter once and for all. Sure it might take a little more time and a bit more elbow grease to transform your health our natural way, but in the end your human house will be clean, pristine and habitable again.

After speaking with other military mothers after Thanksgiving, she decided to send a second shipment in April and create a nonprofit to raise money to help pay the costs of shipping, their biggest expense.
The boxes, each of which cost around $60 to fill and send, provide protein bars, water-flavoring packets and sunscreen.

n How
resilient is our child?
Children move all the time. And not just because their parents have divorced. They move so their parents can take new jobs, for a better climate, or, sadly, because the mortgage is being foreclosed. Children, generally are resilient. Consider how your particular child does with change? And how much you and your child’s other parent can help your child adjust to the change rather than resist it? These guidelines offer a starting point for divorcing parents wrestling with the often difficult question – What should we do about our
house? (Thank you to Howard Krieger, PhD, Connecticut Resource Group, Waterbury, for his assistance writing this column.
