Amco employees hit big jackpot in pool By Charles Kreutzkamp
The Berlin Citizen
A sudden windfall hit 26 employees at Amco Precision Tool Inc. on Farmington Avenue last week. A group of coworkers who have been playing the lottery for five years struck the Powerball jackpot, claiming the $1 mil-
lion second prize. The winning ticket was sold May 6, but none of the group realized they had it until two weeks later. The holder of the winning ticket, Mike Sokolowski, was excited, to say the least. “Are you kidding me? I couldn’t stop shaking,” he said. “ I checked it once and didn’t be-
lieve what I saw. I put it back through again and the clerk said the machine must be all messed up.” Sokolowski realized he had the winning ticket the Friday before Memorial Day. He barely slept that weekend. “Every couple of hours I was See Lotto / Page 7

Nemeth and his family lived at the Hawthorne Inn for three months as they moved from Meriden. The Grelak family treated him, his wife, and his three children “like family,” he said, and naturally his family later chose the Hawthorne as the location for his daughters’ three bat mitzvahs. Edge said that Economic Development is eager to work with prospective tenants interested in running the restaurant and bar at The Hawthorne. Siddiqui said that Hawthorne Elite plans to reopen the restaurant when the right person is found.

The culinary history of The Hawthorne is also to be preserved. One of the Hawthorne Elite owners, Shaik Ali, said they have asked a member of the Salerno family, who was a chef at the then-Hawthorne Inn in the 1960’s, to return to train the culinary staff, bringing back the same skills and recipes that put the location on the map. Catch Muppets flick at Sage Park Saturday Raising Berlin’s annual free movie night has been scheduled for this Saturday at Sage Park. The movie shown will be “Muppets Most Wanted.” The gates to the field will open at 7:15 p.m. This is the fifth year for the annual movie, and last year’s turnout was the best ever with some 300 people, orga-
nizers said; the crowd arriving well before showtime. “It was an excellent turnout and we hadn’t even started,” Ally Riedel, secretary of Raising Berlin said last year. Raising Berlin is a nonprofit started by Berlin mothers in 2009 with a stated goal of teaching youngsters about being a positive part of the
community and building lasting memories for families. The group meets once a month at the Kensington Fire House. In addition to the movie night, Raising Berlin also participates in the annual tree lighting and the scarecrow festival. — Charles Kreutzkamp

Dog Zeusz died from cancer in February of 2014. His police career began in 2007. His many accomplishments include apprehending robbery suspects, finding key pieces of evidence, and rescuing hikers. One of Zeusz’s rescues at Ragged Mountain found two hikers who were lost after
sunset. “He took off after dark without a flashlight,” Gosselin said. Early in his career, Zeusz was called in to a case in Enfield, where he and Chase apprehended a suspected burglar who “had been plaguing the Enfield business district for some time,” Gosselin said. Zeusz tracked the suspect for a quarter mile, found him in a briar, and, personally,
brought him out. Zeusz became known throughout the area, solving another robbery in Wethersfield. In that case, the dog tracked the suspect over half a mile right to “the individual’s back yard. The dog signaled he had evidence.” Police found a large amount of drugs and a handgun under a tarp. The most famous local
case was when Zeusz found a mask with DNA evidence that solved the Webster Bank robbery, putting an end to a spree of bank robberies by three suspects. The evening of the robbery, “a person who was watching the TV news at night learned of the robbery,” and recalled noticing a car parked on the overpass of Route 9 near the bank, Gosselin recalled. Zeusz was called in and “immediately took a track and went up to the highway.” There, $5,000 in cash was found along the embankment along with the mask. Less well known but equally impressive was when Zeusz solved a robbery at Morande Ford, tracking through heavy brush to find a glove containing more key DNA evidence. Gosselin said to Officer Brandon Lagueux “you’ve got GOT

a lot of work ahead of you,” to live up to Zeusz’s legacy. Lagueux is the handler for the department’s new police dog, Bane, the third police dog since the canine program was revived in 2006. Police approached the Budney family, staunch supporters of the D.A.R.E. program and the police dive team, for a donation. To their surprise, Judy Budney insisted on funding the entire canine unit, continuing to this day. Kevin Budney picked up the reins after Judy Budney died in 2007. At the June 11 ceremony, Zeusz’s ashes were spread near a dogwood tree, with a plaque placed underneath naming him “Judy’s dog.” The chosen location was outside the window of Judy Budney’s former office. When asked what drives him to give so much financial support to the program, Kevin Budney said, simply, “This is my way of giving back … this is what I can do.” He said that hearing the stories of what these donations have done feels “pretty good. Something I’m helping with is making our town safer.” Kevin Budney praised the department and the D.A.R.E program. Budney Aerospace has manufactured parts for aircraft for more than 50 years.

The group has been excitedly discussing what they will do with their winnings – paying off car loans, putting a down payment on a house, putting it toward the college education of their children. “It’s a nice windfall,” Sokolowski said. “Some pocket change,” he quipped. When he informed the rest of the Amco Precision Tool Inc. group on Tuesday, news spread like wildfire. “Everyone was hollering and screaming and going nuts,” Sokolowski said. The winning ticket was purchased at C&C Package Store, 1207 Farmington Ave., in Berlin. Opinion Letters to the Editor Dream on To the editor: So the Berlin High kids got Monday, June 1 off ... no... not a special event or holiday, it’s just the delayed construction on our multi-million dollar high school repairs to create a high school as-new not only is running late, but totally falling apart! Ceiling collapses, flooded roof – way to go, Town of Berlin! And you want a new multi-million dollar police station? Keep dreaming! You can’t get the high school done, and in budget, let alone fortify it as a constructionally sound building and we should up our taxes for a police station? Will it be designed and built by the same people that are at the high school? Yikes! Suzanne Helm Berlin
Who’s doing the spinning? To the editor: Scott Veley’s letter (Berlin Citizen, June 11) accusing Deputy Mayor Bill Rasmussen of “spinning” information is a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Who can spin facts better than Veley? Whether Rasmussen has the November elections on his mind is pure speculation, and to suggest that he is spinning facts is,
itself, an example of an insulting spin. When a municipality establishes that a referendum is binding, the town officials are bound by the results. They have no choice. But if a referendum is not binding – as is the case in Berlin – then the town is not “disregarding” (a word Mr. Veley loves to use) the will of the people. It, and the voters, understand that the town officials are only obliged to consider the referendum results, not honor them rigidly, in arriving at their decisions. It would be helpful if Veley could provide a list of the towns to which our residents are fleeing – towns that do not increase their mill rates as the cost of everything involved in government is going up and up and up. Jay R. Worsham Berlin
Town has it wrong To the editor: If this town is so keen on keeping up it’s high society, why doesn’t it do a better job with its blighted areas? Also, why doesn’t this town have a pay-twice tax so more people would be able to afford living here rather than throw all the money down at once and leave their bank accounts low? Jay Ritter Berlin

Time to change Berlin’s future By Anne Reilly The Democrat Town Council members believe spending town and state dollars is the solution for economic woes and development. What they seem to forget is that either way this is your tax dollars. In the past 13 years, the Democrat-majority party made decisions with little concern for the taxpayers or their votes. Town residents vote down the budget during the referendum process and the vote results are ignored. People wonder why they even vote in budget referendums (and you can see the turnout has been historically low) when Democrats have refused to make changes to budgets and/or routinely cut such a small amount it is considered an insult to the voters. In a commentary published in the May 28 Berlin Citizen, Mr. Salina and Mr. Powers talk about a Town Center, Stop & Shop and the development of Veterans Park adjacent Stop & Shop. But looking back on the Stop & Shop project, the Democrats did not support the project and the Democrats on Town Council supported the building of a skateboard park right where Veterans Park is located. Only because of a push by local Republicans was the Stop & Shop complex built and with the veterans, the Veterans Park skateboard proposal was defeated. Berlin economic development is still lagging way behind comparable towns in the Hartford area. Berlin has a vacancy rate of 21.4 percent, second to only East Hartford, and New Britain is third at 20.6 percent. But our area suburbs are thriving – Wethersfield 6.8 percent vacancy, Newington 5.8 percent and Rocky Hill is at 4.7 percent vacancy. And with this high vacancy rate continuing
year after year, the burden to homeowners grows as our town continues to spend. We have had 10 tax increases in the past 12 years. Our town budget has grown from $51,080,378 12 years ago to over $80,500,000. A 58 percent increase in just over 10 years. That does not include the projects that have been bonded, like the high school project. Each bond project increases the town spending and your taxes without it showing the full effect on the town budget. The problem is, when a bond expires, we never see that money returned to us, the current Democrat-majority absorbs that additional amount of money into the town budget and it is another way our town budget grows each year. The Democrat Town Council members should be changing their “tax and spend” policies of the past 12 years. Berlin is taking a page from Governor Malloy. Connecticut continues to lose population, the budget keeps growing, yet state GDP only grew .96 percent (10th worst in U.S.), and is the worst state job creator since 2008. Yet at town meetings, the Democrats push spending, stating “projects will only get more expensive,” “bond rates are low right now;” and when a Republican questions costs, they are told that the town officials know better. Citizens are tired of “it’s only a cup of coffee.” Or how about, “well, that cut isn’t a lot of money,” and so they choose not to consider a cost saving because a Republican offered the suggestion. Lastly, this month you will receive your property tax bill; please review it. Contact the Town Hall and get the history of your taxes. You will see the first increase for the high school project in this See Reilly / Page 14

This will allow the program to run year-round, instead of seasonally, and prevents interference from weather. and conservative fiscal policies are the way to make Berlin a strong and vibrant community. We are concerned with many businesses moving out of town, as this reduces our tax rolls and therefore increases your taxes. If we want economic development, we need to keep taxes low, which will encourage businesses to choose Berlin. Town spending needs to be under control. This fall give the Republicans a chance to show you what they can do to help Berlin prosper.

I hope when the November election is upon us, the Berlin residents will consider the role the town parties have had in the past 12 years of town politics and economic development. The Democrats have the majority, make no mistakes about it. The Democrats are in control for all of the choices made. The Democrats are hoping you will continue to vote them in as they continue to raise taxes and increase the town budget. We, the Republicans, believe economic development

Golf the two to finish tied for the third best performance on the day. Underwood’s finish was tied for 10th best. “Emma Atkinson played her best golf of the year, and on that course, that’s not easy,” Barnes said. “It was pretty tense at the beginning, and we won as a team and the scores came in and held up.” Atkinson was unable to participate in the 2014 state championship match due to a shoulder injury. But like every member of the team,
she bounced back to help the Redcoats win another title – their fourth in a five-year span. “If I had to use a word to describe all these girls, I think I’d use ‘gritty.’ There’s not a lot of fluff here; they get out and they work hard, they practice hard, and they’re all mentally tough,” Barnes said. “And you’ve got to be mentally tough to play this game, that’s one of the biggest keys to being a good golfer. You’re going to hit bad shots, and
how you handle that and how you rebound … again, ‘gritty’ is the word that comes to mind. “When they came into this season, they really didn’t want to leave without another state championship. Not only that, but they said to me, ‘Coach, our goal is to have a perfect season.’ And they did that. These girls set high goals for themselves and they gritted it out all season long.”

Barnes recalled. “We had four seniors on the team and this was their final golf match. And to cap it off by winning a state championship, it just couldn’t have been much better.” Berlin was led by its senior co-captains, Julia Kemmling and Ashley D’Attilio, who both shot 83 on the par-74 Orange Hills course. Senior Abbie Underwood was the team’s third best finisher as she concluded with an 87. Senior Emma Atkinson (93) and junior Alex Perrone (105) also fared well on a course soaked by heavy rain during the first 20 minutes of competition. The victory allowed the team to exorcise last year’s loss in the state championship match when strong play from Greenwich’s top golfer, Catherine McEvoy, sent Berlin home in second place. Berlin had to absorb McEvoy’s best efforts again this year, as she shot a championship-best, even-par 74. “We started to realize (we had a chance to win) was when they posted Ashley’s score. We had Julia’s score come in, and Julia was paired
with the number one player from Greenwich, who shot lights out. She’s a machine. Julia had a good round at 83, but that first number there, we had nine strokes to make up,” Barnes said. “Early on with those first two scores, we thought ‘Ok, this is going to be interesting.’ But then Ashley came in with a real excellent round, and she won her round by six or seven shots.” The strong rounds by Kemmling and D’Attilio allowed

Your own private oasis! Spend your summer relaxing and entertaining by the pool, on the expansive deck, which boasts a cabana area for eating and an outdoor fan to keep you cool on those hot, sunny days. This is a very unique ranch with an open floor plan and 4 bedrooms, including a master bedroom suite, which was added in the late 1980’s and includes a full bathroom and office. The walk out basement gives you an additional 1000 square feet of living space and leads to the pool area. This space had been used as an in law apartment and at one time the bathroom had a shower, which has been removed, but the plumbing is still intact. The home also has 4 heating zones and a wood stove with a fan that blows air into the upstairs hallway.

“Brandon is our best golfer. He’s solid. Ricky started on varsity right away and continues to play well. Will also found himself throughout the season. The young team’s solid finish at states was no fluke. The BHS boys recorded a regular season record of 22-4, falling only to Simsbury, Wethersfield and Glastonbury, which finished tied for second in the Division-I championship match. “It’s a mental game; finding out if you can play with the big boys, so to speak, Line said. “It’s easy to go out and beat a team you should beat, but when you have to play someone that’s as good as you are or better, it’s a hard thing to learn how to do. “And that’s what’s always nice about the state championship is that they’re playing against teams that are comparable to them, and they played well.
