Rochette is town’s new mayor By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen
Town Clerk Kate Wall instructed board and council members-elect to stand before the wall of honor and she would “swear at you nicely” at the town’s swearing-in ceremony Nov. 19. After hearing an invocation by the Rev. Edmund Nadolny, who prayed a prayer of St. Francis he adopted for the occasion, and listening to McGee Middle School choir “Sound Express” sing “Build a Bridge” written by local teacher Corinne Terlecky, the winners of the municipal election Nov. 5 raised their
right hands and took their oaths of office. After the ceremony, council members convened in the upstairs council chambers and elected Rachel Rochette mayor. After she took the center chair on the council dais, she appointed Kevin Murphy deputy mayor. In the time between the swearing-in ceremony ended and the town council meeting began, the newly-elected town officials and their supporters talked in groups and ate cake. Unlike what some may assume, the council member who received the most votes does not become mayor. If
that was the case, Republican freshman Brenden Luddy would lead the council. Instead, the town’s charter states the council will meet the second Tuesday after Election Day to chose one member as mayor. They decide by simple majority vote and the mayor then appoints his or her deputy mayor. Democratic To w n Co m m i tte e C h a i r Fre d Jortner expected Democrat leadership since the council majority was Democrat. “That’s politics 101,” he said. However, Ann Reilly, chair of the Republican Town See Rochette / Page 9

Despite challenges, the play must go on
Berlin High School students act out a scene from “Monty Python and The Holy Grail.” | (Submitted Photo)

Berlin High School drama club spun out its version of “Monty Python and The Holy Grail” on Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17. The play was notable for several reasons. Besides having one of the largest casts, the play was performed at McGee Middle School because of renovations in the high school. Matthew Recore, advisor for the drama club, said the production “definitely had its challenges,” because he worked with a large cast of over 30 actors and 15 stage crew members. “It was logistically difficult,” he said, adding that, “The students really brought it upon themselves to make this show what it was,” he said. The troupe held 15 rehearsals at the McGee stage, but they also rehearsed in Recore’s classroom and the “cafetenasium,” the high school’s gym, which is being used as a cafeteria while the renovation is going on.
Cast and crew traveled to the middle school after classes to practice, and the crew built the set from scratch, having lost access to the drama department’s old sets and costumes. In the shuffle of renovation, some of the contents of the prop closet were thrown out. Other items, such as tools, were stored at Willard Elementary School. The crew did not have access to their spare wood, paints. The school provided some funding and students pitched in, starting from square one to create costumes and props.
The stage crew pitched in, bringing their own materials and tools to build the sets. The approach was to create a minimalistic stage design and actors “broke the fourth wall,” taking the action down in the aisles, Recore said. Recore said the changes “helped to strengthen students’ resolve.” Becky Carriere, 16, said underclassmen walked to McGee for rehearsals, so the new location was somewhat harder to get to. junior worked as the stage manager for the production. Recore said the cast took the late bus that runs from the high school to McGee. Others walked or drove their cars. The cast started rehearsal later. The new space presented some problems because the McGee stage was a whole new environment. For example, the lighting was different. And a new building meant the troupe did not have keys to many of the doors. Gearing up for opening night was a challenge at first, said Dylan Stetson, 16. The junior played King Arthur in the production. McGee’s stage is different than the one at the high school and the cast had about a month less time to rehearse. However, everyone’s part fit and the ensemble’s competence began to build, Dylan said, until the cast could pull off the Monty Python quirky scenes. For instances, the scene of the Killer Rabbit where King Arthur simply tells his knights “We better not risk a frontal assault. That rabbit is dynamite.” In the future, the new high school auditorium will be larger. Now seating 450, the finished auditorium will grow to seat just under 700 audience members. But the new auditorium will not be ready for another three years. In the meantime, the high school drama club will stage most of their productions at McGee. The next play Recore has planned is a dinner theater murder mystery, to be held in the high school’s “cafetenasium.” “It’s a thing that hasn’t been done in any high school that I know of in a long time,” Recore said.

Practice safety when dealing with snow StatePoint – Keeping your property maintained during and after a snowfall is crucial. But handle snow and ice safely, as some of the risk involved comes from the removal process itself – manually shoveling after a heavy snowfall can be dangerously
strenuous. Opting for a snowblower can help you avoid risk, as well as get the job done faster. If you have a larger area to clear, you’ll especially want to consider motorizing your snow removal efforts. To help ensure a safe win-

ter for you, your family and your guests, here are some considerations to make when dealing with snow: • Prevent: An ounce of prevention goes a long way. So if you’re expecting a major snowfall, consider salting before the first flake falls. • Don’t wait: Keep up with the snowfall. Most of the time, it’s easier and faster to clear six inches of snow twice than 12 inches of snow once. • Use the Right Gear: Not all snowblowers are the same, so purchase a machine that’s ideal for your property. Factors such as the type of surface and size of the space you’re clearing, as well as how much and what type of snow you’re expecting all should be considered. For a
free online tool that can help you identify the right snowblower for you, visit www. Toro.com. • Make it Painless: Don’t fight the wind. Whenever possible, point a snow blower’s chute downwind so that the wind helps you blow the snow. It’s usually easier to move up and down the length of a driveway, not perpendicular. In strong crosswinds, start on the upwind side and then work downwind. • Think ahead: Throw snow as far into your yard as possible. Throwing snow only to the edge of a driveway or walkway will lead to high snow banks and make it more difficult to remove snow during the next See Snow / Page 14

Scheyd Agency celebrates 50 years of selling homes Joseph Scheyd works in his office. | (Daniel Jackson/
By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen
Berlin Citizen)
After selling homes and working as the assessor for the town of Berlin for 20 years, Joesph Scheyd feels like he has been inside every home in town. This year, Scheyd’s real estate business, Scheyd Agency, turns 50. The agency has sold homes in town from the time when many of the “houses” were only one to two acre plots. Scheyd attributes his success to the way he has treated customers, always being ready to show someone a house, even if it meant going out on the last evening of a four-day holiday. “We’ve always treated people honestly and fairly,” he said. These days, Scheyd is “pretty much out of the business.” He’s not going out to chase customers, but he still keeps a desk at the agency, a corner office overlooking the intersection of Kensington Road and Main Street. Scheyd started selling homes after he left the gasoline business. He managed five station, but it wore him out. “It was 365 days a year,” he said. He took a few courses, took a test and earned his appraiser license, however the paperwork and the demands of the job didn’t quite suit him. “Most people wanted appraisals done yesterday,” he said. He kept the appraisal license, but he also had a
him about homes. He liked selling homes because it’s a people business. When Scheyd first started selling homes in town, much of the town was open land that lacked sewer or water availability. “It was kind of hard for a young person to buy a house,” Scheyd said. Homes back then went for $15,000 to $20,000, Scheyd said. Today, houses go for $250,000. The agency expanded and started selling homes in the surrounding towns. Before the housing bubble popped in 2008, Scheyd watched as people would buy two or three family houses in New Britain for $60,000. Six months later, the same people would sell but the house would go for $80,000. “The escalation was so rampant,” Scheyd said. “It was crazy.” Over the years, Scheyd has seen some memorable homes. Residents have kept chickens in their basement. Houses may have servant staircases. “You can’t always tell the house form the street. You have to go inside,” he said. Scheyd’s daughter, Sheila Rittman works at the agency. She grew up around the business before deciding to work in the business. “When you’re a kid, you’re paid to clean,” she

Kennedy’s 1963 Thanksgiving message John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963, an event that occurred 50 years ago this month. By the time this national tragedy unfolded, Kennedy had already penned his Thanksgiving Day address. The proclamation was dated Nov. 4, 1963 and released to public domain Nov. 5, 1963, by Secretary of State Dean Rusk. The new president, Lydon Johnson, asked that the late president’s address be made widely available to the public, urging churches, and others conducting public ceremonies, to use Kennedy’s words when commemorating Thanksgiving Day. Here is an excerpts from

Letters to the Editor For the veterans To the editor: Thank you. I could say that in several languages but I feel this is the best for all concerned. The thank you is to the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Greylish Council 3675 for its annual veterans clothing drive. This was held in conjunction with the VFW and turned out to be a great success. Many local businesses as well as townspeople contributed, not only money, but items of need to veterans. These donated items were turned over to me as president of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together and for the faith which united them with their God. So too when the colonies achieved their independence, our first President in the first year of his first Administration proclaimed November 26, 1789, as “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God” and called upon the people of the new republic to “beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions... to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue . . . and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.” And so too, in the midst of America’s tragic civil war, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day to renew our gratitude for America’s “fruitful fields,” See Message / Page 20

this Republic and guide my every labor. All of us have lived through seven days that none of us will ever forget. We are not given the divine wisdom to answer why this has been, but we are given the human duty of determining what is to be, what is to be for America, for the world, for the cause we lead, for all the hopes that live in our hearts. A great leader is dead; a great Nation must move on. Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or to lose. I am resolved that we shall win the tomorrows before us. So I ask you to join me in that resolve, determined that from this midnight of tragedy, we shall move toward a new American greatness. More than any generation before us, we have cause to be thankful, so thankful, on this Thanksgiving Day. Our harvests are bountiful, our factories flourish, our homes are safe, our defenses are secure. We live in peace. The good will of the world pours out for us. But more than these blessings, we know tonight that our system is strong. President Kennedy’s Thanksgiving message: Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia

Travel with baby made easier Special to The Citizen
Many families will be traveling for the holidays, and after multiple cross country trips with my kids, I have a handful of tips to share on air travel with small children. Today, we discuss flying with babies, from birth to 12 months. Save money by flying with your child as a lap baby. Any child over two is required to have a purchased seat, but before two, kids can fly free. My kids were lap babies as long as possible. If you are traveling with a lap baby, see if the gate attendant can put you next to an empty seat. I’ve had quite a bit of success with this request. If you do purchase a seat, bring the car seat. If your
child has a purchased set, the FAA recommends infants are placed in a rear-facing, airplane approved child restraint system. Babies usually like to sleep in their car seats, both at the airport and on the plane. Car seats can be gate checked if your child is lap baby. Wear your infant. Using a child carrier, your hands will be free and your child will be snug. On the plane, some flight crews don’t allow babies to be in the carrier for takeoff and landing, but some do. Be prepared for either scenario. Bring a stroller that folds up easily. Make sure any layovers are long enough to retrieve the stroller and still make it to your next gate. Pre-board. Passengers traveling with little ones are given the opportunity to pre-
Writer’s block By Daniel Jackson The Berlin Citizen
Editor’s Note: Weeklies staff writer Daniel Jackson is trying to write a novel, or 50,000 words of fiction, during the month of November. He isn’t doing this feat alone, but Jackson participating with now 230,000 other writers locally and around t h e w o r l d i n Na t i o n a l Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short. The f irst week of NaNoWriMo was fun. There I was, writing my novel, ticking up the word count. Every day, I’d fire up this old laptop with the keys worn over years of use, open the word processing document and let the story pour forth. I wrote earlier in the month that it felt like “pure creation.” Fast forward to the present day, and I’ll tell you writing a novel in a month is hard work. The problems with the novel I did not see when I planned came out of the woodwork two weeks ago.
My characters are flat, the dialogue is dull, I flip-flop on how I tell the story and the novel seems like a series of random events. I know, I know, that’s why people rewrite. Still, when you spend days on a project that you know has critical errors, writer’s block sets in. When I sit down to write, I would much rather watch YouTube videos, eat junk food or organize my space. It’s procrastination at its finest. When I do eventually open the word document, I’m checking word count every few hundred words. That’s why, I have learned to negotiate with myself. Just the other day, I resorted to bribery. I told myself I’d go out to eat and work at Starbucks, but I had to write. I agreed, and I wrote 2,500 words that night. Tonight seems like it will be just another night of writing: it goes slower than I like, See Writer’s / Page 20
board. Getting your baby settled before takeoff can be great. If you are on a flight that doesn’t have assigned seats, pre-boarding makes for a great seat selection. Sit in the back, unless you have a tight connection. The back of the plane is less crowded, close to bathrooms, and the loud white noise helps babies sleep. The back often provides convenient access to flight attendants and the galley. Don’t put your carry-on in the overhead compartment. Put it under the seat, where you can reach it. I recommend a backpack instead of a diaper bag. With a backpack,
you have both hands free, and if you are wearing your baby, the backpack balances the weight. No bag smacking your leg or sliding down your shoulder. Pack the right stuff. Bring fewer toys than you think you’ll need, and more diapers, wipes, food or formula, and spare clothes. Pacifiers, bottles or sippy cups, comfort items, and a book or two should be included, too. These toys and books are even more interesting to kiddos if they are new. Bring a small first aid kid, and some children’s pain reliever in case of ear pain. Do not forget extra clothes for yourself.
Keep baby eating or drinking during takeoff and landing to minimize ear pain, but skip the lollipops, and all their sugary mess. Don’t be a hero. People are generally very kind to parents traveling with babies, and you will probably have strangers offering assistance. Don’t be afraid to take it, particularly if you are the only adult in your party, as I often am. Infants are usually fantastic travelers. They sleep, they are easily comforted, and they are small and portable. Best of all, they fly free! Next time, we’ll talk toddlers!

Health
Holiday stress can affect your weight traffic, projects with impossible deadlines, troubles with kids, spouses or pets. According to Michael A. Smith, M.D. host of “Healthy Talk” on RadioMD.com and senior health scientist with the Life Extension Foundation in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this state of affairs is chronically elevating cortisol levels, which means blood sugar is constantly being mobilized for energy. “And when you don’t burn the sugar, it gets stored as body fat,” says Dr. Smith. “This is just one of the metabolic imbalances caused by too much cortisol. There are many other problems caused by chronic stress that can pack on the fat.” For example, too much cortisol, which results in a drop in serotonin, can drive sugar cravings and significantly increase appetite. Solutions New research shows that white kidney beans can suppress appetite. So if you’re craving a snack, have a serving of kidney beans instead of reaching for holiday leftovers or a bag of potato chips. Feeling tense? Try some stress reduction activities, like jogging, meditation or breathing exercises. Also, consider adaptogenic herbs, which See Weight / Page 23

During the holidays, it can be all too easy to overeat. But there’s more at play when it comes to packing on pounds this time of year. Another holiday tradition that can affect your weight is stress. Here are some important things to know about your body’s response to stress: Stress hormones We all have a built-in stress response. It’s a complicated set of physiological reactions that help keep you alive during dangerous situations. Here’s how it’s supposed to work: You experience an acute stressor. Thousands of years ago, this could have been a tiger trying to eat you. Today, it could be the in-laws coming to stay with you over the holidays. In response, adrenal glands release the stress hormone cortisol into your bloodstream, initiating an increase in blood sugar used for immediate energy to fight, run or slam on your car brakes. Once the stressor is dealt with, the cortisol leaves your system and things return to their normal metabolic state. But unfortunately today, many of us are constantly stressed, causing significant metabolic imbalances. Chronic stress From when we wake up to when we go to bed, the average person deals with hundreds of low-grade stressful events, like rush hour

The playoffs were out of reach, but the Berlin High School football team still had much to play for in its season finale against New Britain Nov. 27 at Veterans Stadium. With a victory that night, the Redcoats (5-5) would finish above .500 for the year. New Britain was hungry for a win as well. Kensington Auto Service, Ltd. was awarded the 2013 Family Business Award, recently, by the Greater New BritainBerlin Chamber of Commerce. Owner Lenny Tubbs began the auto mechanic service business in 1985, intending to run the business himself, with the help of his wife who kept the books. The business quickly grew too large for one person, and Tubbs added additional mechanics and moved to a larger location in town. With the addition of his son, Justin, Tubbs can now offer tires and custom wheels, as well as a line of auto and light truck customizing accessories and a detailing department. Lenny Tubbs is pictured with former Mayor Adam Salina.
