New officer graduates top of the class By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
A new addition to the Berlin Police Department, Officer Scott Schreiner, recently graduated first in his class at the New Britain Police Academy. Schreiner earned an academic average of 97.62 percent and was given the Samuel Luciano Award
for Excellence, joining the ranks of four other Berlin Police Department officers who have received this award. “It’s a very prestigious award,” said Deputy Police Chief John Klett. The award is only given to the top officer in each academy’s graduating class. Schreiner, a Berlin native, is following in the footsteps

of his father and his uncle, who are both police officers. “We don’t have a lot of father and son teams in this department,” said Klett, who explained that Schreiner is the son of long time Berlin officer Richard Schreiner, who has been with the department for 37 years. See Officer / Page 26

Bring a non-perishable food item to this year’s Berlin Fair and you could help your school win a competition. The Berlin Lion’s Club is asking that fair-goers who come to the fairgrounds this weekend, Oct. 3-5, bring a donation of a canned good or other non-perishable food item. Lion Tammy Campanelli explained that the Lions have prepared boxes for the elementary schools, McGee Middle School, and Berlin High School, and that fair attendees who donate food will have a chance to help their own school (or their children’s school) win the food drive competition. A trophy and a $100 prize, thanks to contributions from Lions Club members, will go to the school that brings in the most food. According to Campanelli, who manages part of the Lion’s budget that includes funds for charitable causes,
members of the club have been very supportive of efforts to help out the food bank. Campanelli approached the club after hearing about the escalating need at the food bank. “The need has been overwhelming… The Lions heard about our need and responded very positively,” according to Director of Social Services Doug Truitt, who said that requests for food assistance has risen sharply in the past year, in addition to a steady increase following the economic downturn of 2009. The food pantry now serves more than 60 families, and due to storage limitations, it is important to keep a steady stream of donations flowing in in order to make sure there is enough stock to feed the population that is being served. Truitt added that the holidays are approaching, and that even more families will be given donated food at that time.

and other issues need to be addressed.” According to discussion by board members, the Certificate of Occupancy for the high school was granted very near to the opening of the school. “We need better coordination,” Brochu said. The superintendent said he was in contact with construction officials as well as the mayor and town manager “to try to really hammer home… that some of these things are unacceptable… You don’t want to seem ungrateful, but it is frustrating for students,” he said. “You can’t cry over spilled milk,” Erwin said, suggesting that the board should work closely with other officials to ensure that next year’s school re-opening proceeds more smoothly. Board member Jeffery Cugno said that next year’s equipment can be ordered earlier and stored until it is ready to be installed. “We had more disruptive work going on last year,” Brochu said, but this year construction is more visible because it is “occurring at the front of the school.” During the meeting Brochu said that Steve Horton of the Ohio School Boards Association “referred to (the Berlin board member handbook) on more than one occasion” and used it as a guide in writing the association’s handbook. Brochu said the Berlin school board’s handbook has “served as a model of board governance around the country.”

PETS OF THE WEEK
Food fight for food bank
Zack is an delightful, five-month-old brown tabby. He is at the perfect age where his personality is visible. While eight-week-old kittens get adopted quickly, they still need nurturing to develop confidence and social skills. If you work full time or have a busy schedule, an older kitten with a developed personality is a better choice. However, if you do have time to nurture and would like to help a kitten that was not so fortunate, Vincent might be the one for you. He is sweet and melts in your arms but he is in need of confidence. For more information, call (860) 828-5287. View all of the adoptable pets at www.fobac.org. BERLIN — Lucille (Belanger) Soucie, 96, formerly of Berlin, widow of Edmond T h o m a s Soucie, died Sunday evening, Sept. 21, 2014, at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Born in Caribou, Maine, daughter of the late Vital and the late Alma (Thibodeau) Belanger, she was a member of St. Paul’s Church. She is survived by three sons, Roger J. Soucie, of Plainville, Lee B. Soucie, of Kensington, and Ronald P. Soucie, of Glastonbury; one daughter, Mary Ann Soucie, of Wolcott; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Doreen S. Martin. Lucille was a wonderful loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who always put her children first. Her hobbies were making beautiful afghans and delicious banana breads. A funeral liturgy will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, at St. Paul’s Church, 467 Alling St., Kensington section of Berlin. Burial was followed in Maple Cemetery, Berlin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Connecticut Chapter, 2075 Silas Deane Highway, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067. Her family wants to thank Glastonbury Health Care for their kindness and compassion during the last 10 months that she was a resident, and also the nurses and CNAs, too numerous to mention, who were all wonderful to her. Opinion KGS: Thanks for the memories By Sallie Caliandri Special to The Citizen
The recent demolition of Kensington Grammar School stirred up reminiscences for many of us — times from our childhoods, when things were simpler. The demise of the town’s first high school, once known as the Jean E. Hooker School, is cause to pause and give thanks for the many experiences students and the town as a whole enjoyed there. This building had an impact on three to four generations of residents over the course of 90 years. The Berlin Historical Society sponsored a program, Sept. 28, at St. Paul Church hall regarding the history of the school, with time to share memories and stories. Starting out as an elementary school, Kensington Grammar School acquired accessories such as the “chicken coop” — Berlin’s first foray into portable classrooms in the 1920s. The town was headed for its own high school with a new, state of the art addition in 1931. The idea of Berlin having its own high school had been bandied about since the turn of the century. In prior years, students wishing to go beyond the ninth grade went to surrounding towns, most often New Britain, Me-
riden or Middletown. Berlin paid for tuition and in some cases, transportation. When KGS was built in 1910, the location was thought to be perfect for future expansion because of the proximity of the railroad station and also the trolley line which connected Worthington Ridge with Farmington Avenue and New Britain Road (Upson’s Corner). Students from East Berlin and Beckley Quarter could take the train to Kensington (train tracks ran from Kensington to Middletown). Others could take the trolley down Farmington Avenue and stop at Upson’s Corner. Throughout the 1920s the town continued to grow, and in 1922 Berlin made an unsuccessful attempt to start a high school. The school board found it was cheaper to keep students in town instead of paying tuition and transportation for out-oftown schools. The issue of building a new school was hotly debated for several years. In 1931, before the Hooker addition (named after a school board member at the time, Jean E. Hooker) became a reality and was considered to be the best of modern design. When the facility opened in January 1932 it marked the first time the school had indoor lavatories. The addition
also boasted a music room and a piano donated by Miss Marjorie Moore. Additional embellishments included a nurse’s office and a dental clinic. Inside and out were art deco features consistent with designs of the times. The auditorium became home to community groups and sporting events. September 1932 marked the addition of a 10th grade, and in the following years another grade was added, until in the fall of 1935 a senior class was in place. This group of 50 students set a standard for subsequent classes and began traditions which continue to this day. In June 1936, the class made history as the first to graduate from Berlin High School. However, the town was still growing. There were already signs that the new building would soon be too small. But plans for expansion soon would be put on the back burner due to more pressing concerns - the start of World War II. By the war’s end, the town began to grow again and the Baby Boom began. Plans for a new high school were revisited and, this time, became a reality in the fall of 1953. The original high school became a part of the elementary school and now there was See Memories / Page 10

Letters to the Editor Support for Abercrombie To the editor: I write in support of Cathy Abercrombie for state representative. Cathy is a strong voice for Berlin in Hartford. She is a champion for education. In her past terms, Cathy worked hard to secure state funding to renovate Berlin High School. Cathy also advocates for children and families affected by autism, by sponsoring the annual Autism Advocacy Day, which raises awareness for autism spectrum disorders. Cathy works hard for us, so I hope you will all join me in voting for Cathy Abercrombie for state representative on Nov. 4. Kristin Campanelli Berlin Throwing money away To the editor: How can this town waste
money rather than have the old police station repaired which would cost the town less money and headaches? The town already has started on the new location and the voters haven’t even thrown their support toward it. It seems like this government is trying to throw away money they don’t even have yet, and throwing the bills on their offspring. Jay Ritter Berlin Vote ‘yes’ To the editor: On Nov. 4, voters will be asked to vote “yes” or “no” on a referendum question concerning construction of a new Berlin Police Department. For too long, the Berlin police force has had to cope with an inadequate work space. The question we face on See Letters / Page 10

drop-in program for teens, a Halloween haunted house and a senior center. These uses continued until 1999 when the building was sold to a developer for potential senior housing, a plan that did not come to fruition. The facility lay vacant for the next 15 years, becoming victim to vandalism and eventually posing a safety hazard. When St. Paul Church purchased the property in 2013, this brought together many ties from the past. The school had been brand new when the church moved, in 1913, from its original site on Main Street near the American Paper Goods factory. For decades the KGS parking lot was used by those attending Mass. Children stayed after school for religious instruction. When St. Paul’s school first opened, its students used the KGS cafeteria services until the church added facilities to its own school. The property will now be used, in part, as a parking lot and a portion of it will be set aside for a meditation park. Hopefully, that space will become a place of prayer and contemplation for all. a brand new building, with the construction of the Kaminsky building now complete. One of this year’s new acts is Disc-Connected K9s, a world famous Frisbee dog show. Fans of fair food have a special reason to rejoice this year, as many community organization booths, including the Lion’s Club itself, have updated their menus, Bienkowski said. One of the new

Much has changed, 132 years later as well as a tug-of-war and a baseball game. First prize for a vegetable would get you around 50 cents, and for certain categories of animals, as much as two dollars – the equivalent of about $50 in modern currency, according to Oregon State University’s inflation calculator. In the early 1900’s, the Berlin became the site of the State Agricultural Fair, held annually until 1919. The fair had an entrance fee of one dollar (a bit over $25 dollars today) in 1901 and was a two day event, featuring a variety of exhibits, games, and other entertainment. According to the historical society, 1919 was the last year for the fair, leading to a long

The Berlin Fair has a rich history going all the way back to the Kensington Congregational Harvest Festival in 1882. According to information obtained from the Berlin Historical Society, the fair began as a squash festival. In 1882, an Armenian minister from the Divinity School at Yale visited Kensington Congregational Church and gave squash seeds to children as part of a sermon. After a bountiful harvest, church children sold squash, other vegetables, and squash pie to benefit Armenia. The event was so successful, the story goes, the entire congregation got involved the following year, and the festival slowly evolved into a townwide fair, with the Berlin Agricultural Society incorporated in 1886 with agriculture fairs held annually at Brandegee Hall on Worth-

Fair-goers will have a chance to see the Nerveless Nocks perform death-defying stunts, including riding motorcycles in an enclosed Globe of Death at this year’s Berlin Fair. “It will be a lot of fun,” Michaelangelo Nock said. Nock is the current President of the Nerveless Nocks, a family business. According to Nock, members of his family have been performing incredible feats for generations. The Nock Family traces their circus history all the way back to 1700s Switzerland, and the family formed the first legally recognized circus in Switzerland, which was officially established in 1840. “When you’re a European family that’s not such a long time,” Nock laughed. As the story goes, the Nocks were given the nickname “nerveless” by no less
of the newer ones, as it involves motorcycles. For the Globe of Death – sometimes also known as the Globe of Thunder – men on motorcycles race around in a steel sphere, narrowly missing each other at high speeds, even going upside-down. “We’re doing a great show at the Berlin fair,” Nock said. The Nerveless Nocks are scheduled to perform three shows daily behind the Horse Ring.

than Queen Elizabeth of England, in 1954. Nock said that his family performed with John and Henry Ringling North for the Greatest Show on Earth in 1954, during which they performed, among other tricks, the Sway Poles, a stunt Nock said his father invented. The
Sway Poles was a trick conceived based on skills the family obtained in climbing poles to set up circus tents. Nock’s father also appeared on an episode of the Ed Sullivan show. The Sway Poles, Nock said, is like watching someone climb the mast on a pi-

Rodeo events have been a big part of the Berlin Fair over the years, and 2014 is no exception. This year, a bull riding performance will be put on by Painted Pony Rodeo, featuring a variety of cowboy events, including Dusty Barrett, the rodeo clown. “It’s great family entertainment,” Shana Graham said. Graham and her husband Shawn have owned the rodeo since 2002. Graham said her husband has always had a “love of the sport,” since he used to be a competitor. Following an injury, Shawn Graham took to running Painted Pony. Painted Pony runs a weekly
rodeo and barbecue dinner in New York as well as the touring show that is coming to this year’s fair. Shana Graham said Painted Pony is the oldest continuously-run weekly rodeo in the United States, having been in operation since 1953, when it was started by Wild Horse Don Baxter. In addition to bull riding and bull racing, the show will feature a cowgirl barrel racing event. In this event, the cowgirl performers ride horses around tight turns, weaving in and our of barrels, Graham explained. Those who attend the rodeo at this year’s fair are sure to have a good time, Graham said.

nated to the charities of the top three winners’ choices. “Our entertainment lineup is one of the best we’ve ever had,” Bienkowski said, with musical headliners including the Rick Derringer Band, the Cross Eyed Cats, the LoCash Cowboys, the Bus Drivers Band, and Vinyl Revolution. One of the biggest entertainment headliners of the year will be the Nerveless Nocks Thrill show, a dare-
devil performance from the Nocks family, who can trace their performance roots all the way back to the 1700’s in Switzerland. According to their website, the Nocks family was Switzerland’s first established circus in 1840, and were given the name “Nerveless” by Queen Elizabeth of England in 1954. A bull riding performance also comes back this year with Painted Pony Rodeo, replacing last year’s rodeo performers. Painted Pony, based
out of New York, claims fame with roots as one of the oldest weekly rodeos in the U.S. “To sum it up, there is something for everyone at this year’s Berlin Fair,” Bienkowski said. “I’ve only skimmed the surface.”

hiatus until the Lion’s Club brought the fair back to life about thirty years later and after the end of World War 2. In 1949, the modern fairgrounds on Beckley Road in East Berlin were purchased and the fair was held once

Football The Redcoats’ offense broke open in the team’s third game of the season, running all over Tolland en route to a 42-7 victory. Berlin jumped out to an early 14-0 lead after one quarter thanks to two touchdown runs by senior quarterback
and also notched off five kills on the afternoon.
Alec Norton of two and 10 yards respectively. The Redcoats scored to make it 20-0 early in the second quarter with a five yard run by senior running back Anthony Sisti. After Tolland’s first score of the game, Sisti hauled in a 34 yard pass from Norton for another score. A two-point conversion from junior Owen Tayler gave Berlin a 28-7 halftime advantage.

Owen Taylor takes off against Tolland in the team’s 42-7 win this past Friday. | Matt Leidemer / For the Citizen as they look to return to the playoffs. Berlin began its week with a difficult loss to Maloney, 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 26-24). Senior Abbie Underwood had a strong match, recording five kills and finishing a perfect 8-for-8 on serves. Senior Brooke Barney was also perfect on her serves, finishing 7-for-7 while adding four blocks on the defensive end. The girls were able to turn their week around when they defeated the Terriers of Rocky Hill, 3-0 (25-17, 2510, 25-19). Senior Nidhi Patel was a remarkable 23-of-24 on serves, which included seven aces on the afternoon. Patel also recorded nine assists. Junior Megan Pskowski had a strong day with eight kills and one block on defense. The Lady Coats wrapped up their week with a strong 3-0 victory over Middletown (25-23, 25-12, 25-19). Underwood recorded 11 kills in the Girls volleyball A strong 2-1 week from match. Fellow senior Alyssa the Lady Redcoats helped Germano went a perfect 12the girls to improve to .500 for-12 on serves (five aces) In the second half, it was another healthy dosage of Taylor who scored on a 26yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a five-yard run in the fourth to close out the scoring. Taylor accounted for 139 total yards in the contest, 126 of which came on the ground. Sisti also eclipsed the 100-yard mark, gaining 92 receiving yards and 27 yards rushing. Senior Jeremy Eliadas had quite the performance defensively, recording 15 tackles (three for loss, one sack) while senior Tyler Giangrave added 10. The defensive unit collectively recorded two forced fumbles, one blocked punt, one pass deflection and an interception. Berlin (3-0) will return home this Friday to take on the visiting Rams of Rockville (1-2).
Boys soccer The Redcoats’ week began on a rather frustrating note yet was able to end with a promising performance as the boys saw their record slip to 2-3-2. Berlin began its week against a tough Maloney team, falling by a final count of 4-0. Senior goalkeeper Wojciech Kajzer had a troublesome afternoon with the Spartans well balanced and impressive attack, giving up two goals to Marcos Bozi alone. Kajzer made three saves in the contest. The Coats ended their week with an impressive 0-0 tie against Middletown. Coming into the matchup undefeated, the Blue Dragons seemed like the obvious favorites. A strong defensive showing from the likes of senior Kevin Kennure, senior Devon Reilly, and junior Evan Cornwall –among others –proved to be too much for Berlin’s foes. Kajzer recorded three saves, while Berlin was able to place eight shots on goal. Girls soccer The Lady Redcoats continued their impressive season with a 1-0-1 week to improve to 5-1-1 on the year. Berlin toppled Maloney 3-0 to start their week on the right track. Senior Sarah Bosco recorded two goals while fellow senior Cara Johnson also found the back of the next for the Coats. The Spartans didn’t place a single shot on goal during the matchup. Looking to end their week on a high note, the Lady Coats ultimately settled for a 1-1 tie with the Blue Dragons of Middletown. Bosco once again found paydirt for Berlin as junior goalkeeper Michaela Dehm recorded eight saves in the highly competitive matchup. The tie also left both teams in a tie within the See Winning / Page 24

HARTFORD • A new medical clinic staffed by local physicians has opened in Hartford recently specializing in only one unique, niche area–men’s sexual performance. The Physicians E.D. Center™ has an amazing offer - first 37 callers receive a free in-office medication dose. Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation have long been a problem for millions of men in spite of the popularity of Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. Many men either are not helped by these medications or cannot take them due to medical conditions and adverse side effects. According to The Physicians E.D. Center™ of Connecticut’s Medical Director, Dr. M. Sheldon Polsky, Board Certified Urologist and author of ‘Seven Secrets Doctors and Drug Companies Won’t Tell You About Erectile Dysfunction,’ “Our doctors offer a proven treatment with over two hundred doses of custom blended prescription medication that can help virtually all men regardless of their age or medical history, including men as young as twenty-one to well into their nineties, with diabetes, heart conditions, prostate cancer, and high blood pressure. All drugs
are FDA approved, no surgery is involved and patients will see a licensed Connecticut Physician” Referred to as “the gold standard,” by the International Journal of Impotence Research, “Our treatment allows our local doctors to adjust the dosage for a man’s performance to 45-minutes, an hour, even 90-minutes,” according to Dr. Polsky, “and patients see immediate results in the office. We offer a simple guarantee: ‘If you don’t respond to our medication on the first visit there’s no charge.” With that guarantee, local patients have nothing to lose. The Physicians E.D. proved to 4-0 last week with two more strong wins in the pool coming against the likes of East Hartford and Plainville. In the team’s first meet of the week, the Coats swam laps around East Hartford, winning easily 102-82. Senior Arian Silas qualified for states in the 100 meter butterfly and also dropped three off her time in the 100 backstroke from her earlier meets this season. In the girls’ final matchup of the week, they were able to come out on top over the Blue Devils 95-84. Sophomore Stephanie Humen qualified for states in the 200 individual medley while dropping another second off her time in the 100 freestyle. Junior Olivia DeGroff,
goodwill
already known to be a strong swimmer, swam very well in the 500 freestyle, an event she has rarely any experience with. Senior Kelsey Anderson had a strong day, as well, dropping seven seconds from her personal best in the 200 freestyle. Although Anderson wasn’t the first to touch the wall, the performance –along with many others against Plainville –help solidify scoring points in second, third, and fourth place to help the Lady Coats come out on top. “They’ve been training out of their minds and dealing with a different style of coaching,” said head coach Andy Ahlberg. “They have a goal in mind and know how to come in and get the job done.” Ahlberg also credited the divers –senior Kyra Daigle, junior Emily Dymczyk,
and sophomore Hannah Lavoie –for all performing with great consistency in the early stages of the season, as well as showing vast improvement throughout the first month of competition.
