bermuda haha It was back in March, 1994... BY ROGER CROMBIE

Her Majesty the Queen turned 90 this spring. She visited Bermuda on several occasions. I was present when she and Prince Phillip stopped in for two days in March, 1994. Newish at the reporting lark, I was invigorated by the preparations for the grand visit. They gave me a badge. Came the big day, I was at the airport to cover Her Majesty’s arrival. Rather than roping us off, the Police drew a chalk line on the tarmac, behind which we hacks were to remain at all times. Everyone would follow the Royal entourage wherever it went. Everything would be comprehensively reported. My approach was to find the story no one else could get. My job, as I saw it, was to add colour, look for the human interest. I was hoping for the front page, and possibly a knighthood. The plane landed and trundled up to the arrivals area. A red carpet was unfurled by army types, including a pal of mine, who would tell me nothing of the carpet itself. My first story idea thus went down the drain. With the carpet in place, some doors near the back of the plane opened and a howling mob of drunken maniacs poured out. This was the international press corps, flying in the back of the bus. This rabid horde roamed wherever it pleased. I was tempted to join them, but you can’t just ignore a chalk line, can you? Out came the Queen and Prince Philip, and a bunch of attendants and hangerson. The Royal couple was introduced to Bermuda’s best, in descending order of importance. It was fascinating to see a system of precedence we all understood made flesh. In fact, Her Majesty could have met all 60,000 Bermuda residents in descending order; that’s how the class system works. I was number 59,701, being foreign and odd and all like that. The only people less important than me were hopeless ne’erdo-wells, junkies, or newspaper editors. The whole shooting match of Royals, locals, press, airport personnel and some hapless passing tourists then took off for St. George’s in what I recall as a huge cloud of dust. I alone remained at the airport, sole witness to whatever might happen next. I sidled up to the back of the plane, where the Royal baggage was being disgorged, 110 pieces in all. One long wooden box drew my attention. I was told that it contained the Sceptre, a symbolic ornamental staff held in the hand by the ruling monarch. “Pass us that box,” said a royal attendant, since I was standing closest to it by the belt. And yes, for a moment, I held the royal sceptre in my hand and was King of England. King! It was odd, because I’m only 64,210,822nd in line for the Throne in the UK. I handed over the box, abdicated and nipped off for lunch. My story ran on page 17 and I had to give the badge back. How the mighty are fallen.

fresh & fruity The Water Collection BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Is it hot enough for you yet? Scorch season has only just begun, and those familiar with Bermudian summers know that you can hide from the sun but will still feel its sweltering heat. Of course, you want to stay fresh and more importantly always smell delicious. Just try one of the unisex fragrances in Lili Bermuda’s Water Collection, particulary if you find that body sprays don’t last yet shy away from the intensity of traditional perfume. The whole collection is unmistakably inspired by island living, intended to be “modern, casual and easy to wear”, says the Perfumer, Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone. The trio of Eau de Colognes, blend the scent of the ocean with your favourite summer fruits and citrus flavors (and even their names sound like exotic elixirs infused with tropical mystique.)

FRESH WATER When asked to create a fragrance exclusively for Tucker’s Point Resort, back in 2009, the Perfumer was inspired by the concept of an ‘Eau Fraiche’- a diluted perfume with a lower concentration of essential oils - and so they came up with this energizing fragrance. Boasting top notes of clementine, grapefruit and lemon, it’s the most unisex in the collection, and extremely versatile. “We found that our younger, more modern customers like to have fragrances that are a little less gendered, and a little more refreshing and easy” says Isabelle. “It fits perfectly with Tucker’s Point because you could wear it from the Golf Club to the Beach Club!”

BERMUDA . June 2016

fresh & fruity the water collection

“Perfume is meant to be intense, but these fragrances are not. The waters are light and refreshing, meant for misting over yourself after a shower...” -Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone, Perfumer

SOUTH WATER The collection’s best-seller tips more to the feminine side of the scale with a sweet muskiness and notes of guava, coconut milk and sea salt. Dubbed by Isabelle as “the beach side of the collection”, the smell instantly transports you to the South Shore, as you daydream of flirty cocktails and tie-dye sunsets. “South Water is the fruitiest of the waters, you can almost taste pina colada, it’s really, really nice and sexy too” she adds. Created in 2011, the fragrance became an instant hit and it’s the only scent in the collection that also comes as a candle.

CALYPSO The newest edition to the collection is probably the most masculine of the three scents. Bermuda sea grass and neroli give the scent a bit of spice, while the essence of juicy loquats also distinguishes Calypso as the most Bermudian of the waters (ingredient wise). Created in 2013, Calypso is said to “capture the summer energy of Bermuda’s emancipation celebrations and the lively rythms of the Island’s music and lifestyle.” As well as colognes, all of the fragrances in the Water Collection are available as a shower gel, soap on a rope and silky body lotions. Can’t decide on just one? Then try the ‘Discover Lili Bermuda Gift Set’, available for him or her, you receive a Fragrance Library containing vials of all their fragrances and a gift certificate for a 100ml bottle of cologne or perfume, that you can redeem once you’ve chosen your favourite scent.

bermuda dreaming An Instagram Initiative

Bermudian photographer, Amanda Temple has recruited a passionate team of artists, designers, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, photographers and island enthusiasts to use Instagram to show the world the beautiful island they’re proud to call home. Sadly, the #bermuda feed is often flooded with unrelated imagery and it urged Amanda to strive to create a more “honest” representation of the island. Many travellers are now using Instagram in place of Google or Trip Advisor, when planning their next vacation, looking for that honesty. Unlike Google, an often faceless and vast resource, Instagram’s success is hinged on a human connection. “The power of this lies in the medium,” she insists. “I really felt it was important to put faces to this project, to inspire people to come and visit and provide a happy place to share Bermuda experiences and memories.” Research has shown that vacationing has taken on a new shape since the advent of social media. Dreaming is the first stage in trip planning, followed by researching, booking, the experience itself and, finally, sharing. It was with this in mind that @bermudadreaming was born. “This isn’t exactly a novel idea,” Amanda maintains, humbly. “Many people are already sharing their images on Instagram. I am just hoping we can all share more! We’d like to encourage collaboration. Tag posts with #bermuda, and #bermudadreaming for a chance to be featured on Bermuda Dreaming. Please share your Bermuda stories with us.” Visit www.bermudadreaming.com for more details.

rising with the tide

Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

She’s at it again! Bermuda’s original pink sand jeweler, Alexandra Mosher, has been busy as a bee since we last interviewed her in December. For those unfamiliar with the local celeb, Mosher is famous for creating wearable handmade sculptures inspired by Bermuda’s environment. Nearly a decade ago, she found her niche in the market by merging art with fashion, and has been steadily growing her brand ever since. From the land to the sea, her designs always reference the island in unique and whimsical ways. Just visit her store in the Washington Mall to find a tangible piece of ‘Bermy magic’ to take back home with you; she has some gorgeous new designs in store for the season... What’s been going on since we last met? I’ve been working on a lot of new pieces. I’m really excited about my new sand pieces; I’ve designed a little seahorse, turtles, and dolphins. And I’ve also expanded my highly coveted Caviar Collection. Which do you prefer to make, the abstract pieces or the shapes? In the beginning I only designed abstract shapes, but over the years so many people have asked me for specific shapes that I just had to carve them! Someone suggested

recently that I design a crab and an elephant, and I always thank them for their ideas! I just love it when people get exited and want to be a part of the design evolution of my pieces. But I really enjoy what happens when I make the abstract pieces. They just kind of grow... it’s a very different process and it makes my heart sing. With the sand collection pieces I start with a little block of wax and carve down into a refined shape. For the abstract pieces like my Melt and Caviar Collections, I build up the design in an additive process. Both are based in wax, but each technique requires a different mindset. With the abstract work I’m growing a piece rather than finding a shape within a chunk of wax - it’s more free-flowing. What do you have planned for this summer? Wedding season is upon us in Bermuda, and I am really exited and proud of the bridal collection I’ve created out of Bermuda textures. Each style has just enough of the textures to be really interesting - each one is abstract and organic, a signature of my work. With this series I’m literally pulling textures directly from nature and embedding them in the surface of the metal. This collection is so pretty, I’m thrilled to be adorning the left hands of couples who love Bermuda! I bet you do a lot of bridal pieces... We do. I’ve always done them by request, but now I have a whole cohesive collection. The men’s wedding bands have been out for about a year. The engagement rings and women’s textured bands have been out for just a few weeks. I’ve been developing them quietly all winter and just launched them. And everything is handmade here in Bermuda? We have a team of Bermudian artisans, which I lovingly call my “sand fairies,” because, well, why have a regular boring job description when we have this much fun? (laughs). I’m still a big kid at heart. You’re a Certified Tourism Ambassador, how does that tie in with your work as a jeweller? We aim to delight visitors in every way, whether it’s helping someone find just the right jewellery treasure, or finding the best place to have lunch. Our staff are pretty awesome and very conversational, so when you come in, you’re really going to get to know us and we want to help you find that little piece which really represents your Bermuda experience. We also try to inspire our overseas friends via social media we were just named one of Experience Bermuda’s 10 Instagram Accounts to Watch, and we try to share our Bermuda love stories at every opportunity. Our new window will be a “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a collection of stunning natural objects that I reference in my jewellery - all the tiny wonders of Bermuda’s beauty. Find Alexandra’s boutique inside the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton. For infomation or to shop online call 441 236 9009 or visit alexandramosher.com.

“come play with us!” Bermuda Heroes Weekend

With our pastel-coloured houses, abundance of palm trees, and picturesque beaches, it’s easy to forgive those who mistake Bermuda as part of the Caribbean. “Whenever I travel and tell people that I’m from Bermuda, the first thing they ask me is, when is your Carnival?” says Jason Sukdeo, the President of Bermuda Heroes Weekend Ltd. He’s an avid lover of soca music who has attended many carnivals around the world. In travelling, he recognized the need for a similar event in Bermuda, and through much research, planning and marketing was able to organize the first ever Caribbean-style Carnival, to happen on our shores. Bermuda Heroes Weekend was a massive three-day celebration of WestIndian culture, with a lively parade, vibrant costumes, dancing in the streets and performances by international soca stars. It was also the beginning of a new tradition and this month it’s all happening again. BHW will start off in typical carnival format, with a stage-show “Fête” on Friday, June 17th. Starting from 6pm at National Stadium in Hamilton, local and international soca stars like Kes the Band, Ricardo Due, Lyrikal and King Bubba FM, will energize the crowd with fast-paced tunes. Followed by a “glow-themed” J’ouvert (frenchpatois term for party at “dawn-break”) to take place on Saturday morning from 3-8am at the Bernard’s Park, Softball stadium. “We don’t want to do a direct copy of carnival in other countries, which is why we don’t call it Bermuda Carnival, instead it’s Bermuda Heroes Weekend,” says Jason, explaining how BHW will differ from popular Carnivals in Trinidad, Toronto, Bahamas and Brazil. This year the parade will finish at Clearwater Beach in St. David’s, where the crowd will have the option to strip down to their bathing suits and jump in the water when it’s all done. “Typically Carnival runs through cities with a backdrop of buildings on either side, but we wanted to take advantage of the beauty of Bermuda and finish up at the Beach” he says. The parade will start at 2pm on Saturday, June 18th. “Of course the biggest difference will be the raft-up. They don’t do that anywhere else, attached to a Carnival,” he concludes. The weekend’s celebrations will culminate on Monday, June 20th, in a huge party on the Great Sound, with booze, music and flotation devices of all shapes and sizes. “This year we are going to try and see if we can get Bermuda in the Guiness Book of World Records for the biggest raft-up in the world!” To find out more about the events or purchase tickets. ten ways to keep the kids happy BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Vacation can easily become hard work when you have to think about accomodating everyone’s interests. But these family friendly activities should silence the whining....

1

Splash around at Dolphin Quest These friendly animals love to show off. Catch a free show with your admission into the Keep in Dockyard. Or, book a special encounter sure to give your child the memory of a lifetime. Children as young as 3 years old can interact with the dolphins, by feeding and touching. While older kids can swim with the dolphins as well. But whether or not you get in the water, just watching them swim, jump and splash around will entertain the whole family. dolphinquest.com

Snorkeling & Mini Golf At Snorkel Park in Dockyard, adults can have drinks at their cabana bar while the kids play in the sand. Or they can rent a snorkel and mask to explore the beach below sea-level. After that, why not cap off the afternoon with a round of mini golf? Directly adjacent to Snorkel Park is the Bermuda Fun Golf course, where the whole family can play 18 challenging holes with the beautiful blue ocean in the background. snorkelparkbeach.com, fungolf.bm

ten ways to keep the kids happy Explore the new Playhouse at Bermuda’s Martime Museum The National Museum of Bermuda recently opened their new Playhouse, featuring 15 interactive exhibits for little ones. The Playhouse was designed by local dads, who wanted to create a unique museum exhibit that would be exiting and engaging for young children. The playhouse chronicles Bermuda’s history in a colorful, imaginitive, and screenless way. nmb.bm

4

Discover the exhibits at the BUEI The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute in Devonshire parish is a great place to stimulate the minds of budding Jacque Cousteaus. There, kids can dive into the depths of the sea and live to tell the tale of being attacked by sharks and a giant squid! Their newest exhibit ‘The America’s Cup Endeavor’ even allows kids to practice sailing a foiling catamaran on the Great Sound in a virtual simulator. buei.bm

Spend some time at BAMZ You’ll want to reserve at least 2 hours to fully experience all that Bermuda’s Aquarium, Museum and Zoo has to offer. This all-in-one complex promises a fun, exiting, and educational experience for the whole family. There are surprises at every corner, with more than 200 species of marine life and over 300 varieties of birds, reptiles and mammals on display. Many of the exhibits have free-flight immersion areas that allow you to see the animals roaming freely as they would in nature. bamz.org

Plan a picnic at Shelly Bay Low tide beaches like this one in Hamilton Parish are great for small children. Shelly Bay has shallow crystal clear waters that extend for nearly half a mile before getting deep, perfect for little ones who are still learning how to swim. There’s also a large playground and park right behind the beach with some nice shaded areas provided by trees. Plan for a picnic here after visiting BAMZ. Tobacco Bay in St. George’s is another nice shallow beach with many facilities. BERMUDA . June 2016

ten ways to keep the kids happy Pizza, Ice Cream & Snowballs Pit stops are essential to keep the kiddos smiling. On your way to and from site-seeing, stop for a slice of everyone’s favourite finger-food at Pizza House in St. Davids, Hamilton Parish or Southhampton. In Hamilton Parish you can also take the kids to Bailey’s Ice Cream Parlour for delicious home-made ice cream. Or, next time you’re in the City try a Snowy’s snowball from their stand in front of the City Hall Car Park.

8

Check out Harbour Nights There’s much more to Harbour Nights than dancing Gombeys and vendors selling their crafts. Zip-lining, assorted fun-castles, face-painting, and mini donuts are just a few of the highlights in store for kids at this weekly street festival on Hamilton’s Front Street. It happens every Wednesday evening, and while you watch the kids enjoy themselves you can sip on a Dark & Stormy and soak up the positive vibes all around.

Go Exploring In reality, kids just wanna play and all that’s needed to keep them content is nature and their imagination. Visit one of our historic forts (Fort St. Catherine in St. George’s or Fort Hamilton in Pembroke) and let them pretend to be pirates or naval soldiers. Or, spend sometime exploring the island’s lush parks and nature reserves (we reccommend Botanical Gardens, Spital Pond or Tom Moore’s Jungle) where they can run, jump and scaur the grounds for trinkets and treasures.

inspired by bermuda Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art.

BERMUDA . June 2016

Inspired by bermuda alexandra mosher studio jewellery

“‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams.

Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. You can find the lovely pink Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery Boutique in the Washington Mall at #7 Reid Street in Hamilton or some of her collections at A.S. Cooper & Son’s stores islandwide. buy bermuda Sparkling Turquoise BY REBECCA SINGLETON (HANSON) DESIGNER OF TABS (THE AUTHENTIC BERMUDA SHORTS)

What inspires me most about Bermuda are the colours. Every one of my shorts (TABS) is colour matched to something you will find on the island, and there is no shortage of inspiration. One of the things Bermuda is most famous for (besides Bermuda shorts!) is the turquoise colour of our waters. This month I visited a number of local designers to see how they incorporate this Bermudiful shade into their work. Amanda Temple is well know for her whimsical wedding photography and portraits, but recently she has been capturing the textures and tones of the island in collectable fine art pieces. I love the idea of collecting eight or so smaller pieces and hanging them together. You can view her work on her website www.amandatemple.com

I am the designer behind TABS (The Authentic Bermuda Shorts) and have also been inspired by the colour turquoise. For me, I colour matched the shorts to the queen parrotfish, which are plentiful in our waters. This colour is going to remind you of Bermuda every time you put them on! Available in men’s, women’s and swim shorts from www.tabsbermuda.com and A.S. Cooper’s & Sons.

buy bermuda sparkling turquoise I recently found Laura Smith’s AMAZING glass work on Instagram and have been obsessed with her work ever since. It’s stunning and perfectly captures our waters. You have to see her work at Masterworks Gallery (which is also a must see) or on www.laurasmithglass.com. Is it too early to ask for a Christmas present?

golf Port Royal - A field of dreams BY KIM SWAN, J.P. TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

Port Royal Golf Course for the past 47 years has been my field of dreams first as a golfer - today is no different - there remains that natural ‘mystic in the air’, as I coach golf persons of all ages and skills levels both locally and from around the world. I am sure that it is obvious, as I can’t say enough about what it means to me to have grown up playing a world class public golf course like Port Royal in the 1970’s. For me as a young boy in the early 70’s, the transition from football and cricket did not come easy - in all honesty the passion for the great game of golf came first - the excitement of experiencing some awesome shots together with the inability to conquer this sport immediately captivated me beyond compare. World Class Local Knowledge I am deeply indebted to the foundation given to me in golf from homegrown experts here in Bermuda - mainly from my uncle Golf Professional Herman ‘Tucci’ Bascome - but there were others who played a part in my early development during my formative years in Bermuda. Of course, there was Walter King, Rogers Outerbridge, Alex Crofton and a host of others along the journey, but it was the golf foundation laid by Pro Herman ‘Tucci’ Bascome that nurtured my passion - a solid base which took my talents to a level which allowed me to compete at the highest level internationally as an amateur and professional golfer - punctuated by wins at collegiate level for Troy University in Alabama and Louisiana, 3 Bermuda Open Titles before the age of 30 along with numerous creditable performances in international professional events - including making history by being the first Bermudian to qualify and participate regularly on the PGA European Tour in the early 1980’s and with Keith Smith having Bermuda win the Americas Zone qualifying and be represented for the first time at the World Cup of Golf in 1984. Drills Teach Skills The past 4 years have been spent plying my trade as Teaching Golf Professional at Port Royal Golf Course - coaching and/or teaching golf daily. Next to my days regularly playing golf - it is the closest a person can get to the game of golf. It is important for golfers to appreciate, that to LEARN to play golf at a creditable level, takes time and proper application of proper methods and techniques - practice, patience and persistence are key for success. Today as a coach, I am blessed to have had some great teachers and players share their knowledge with me, for me now, it is a blessing to impart my knowledge to a player - often it is A pleasant reminder of a fond memory. Especially when it’s a player with the hunger & thirst to improve their game. Following the example of my earliest teacher - Golf Pro Herman ‘Tucci’ Bascome - I use drills to train my students. Drills, when applied consistently will train a golfer. If a golfer accepts and sticks with the drill their skill will evolve and improve - drills are meant to be repeated in training, a player must commit to stick with them. When drills are respected and consistently applied, they can become a lifelong golf coach and a companion to a player. Personally, just sharing this knowledge reminds me fondly of the many drills I have learned and the great golfers I learned them from. Lean not unto your own understanding To often we see golfers of all levels, when they are having difficulty - trying to analyze their golf problems or that of a friend or family member - well meaning but not always beneficial. A famous scripture reads, “lean not unto thy own understanding...” is most applicable to golf coaching. • rarely does a proper grip feel comfortable or • seldom do golfers appreciate the importance of proper posture/stance /ball positioning or quite often golfers arms are tense and fail to properly hinge their elbow &/or make an effective turn around a stable lower body on the backswing. These and other swing mechanism are necessary to make a consistent golf swing but cannot be developed in short order. We encourage golfers of all levels to engage a PGA Golf Professional to learn how to enjoy playing this great game of golf. Make time to join us at Port Royal Golf Course, play our newly upgraded world class golf course and relax on our patio at Bella Vista Grill.

treasures of the sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

Bermuda Biennial 2016: It’s About Now-Memories of the Present By Lisa Howie, Director, Bermuda National Gallery

The Bermuda National Gallery is closed until June 17 as we prepare for the opening of the Bermuda Biennial. My sincere apologies for the inconvenience. Please enjoy some of the sculpture from our permanent collection in the Queen Elizabeth Park behind Perot Post Office on Queen Street, Hamilton. We are excited to launch the 12th iteration of the Bermuda Biennial, thanks to the dedicated sponsorship of Bacardi Limited. This year’s theme is It’s About Now- Memories of the Present. Perhaps you can relate to the ideas behind this theme selection, which is that this moment, this ‘now’ emerges out of an era when information is constantly bombarding us. Now, more than ever, it feels that time is incessantly bounding ahead. (Which is ridiculous of course, as I can watch time turn on my archaic analog watch, spinning second by second as it always did.) The theme is borne out of this sense that we are saturated by hyper-connectivity and interactivity with technology and data and dialogue from so many directions simultaneously. What will be remembered about this moment? What type of visual expressions will communicate across generations? In what ways might visual artists place flag markers on what is important and meaningful of our time? Or does the theme itself present a paradox? If these types of questions are interesting to you, then you will enjoy the various ways in which local artists have addressed the theme. Expressions are in digital media, sculpture, photography, woodblock printing, and more. BNG Curator Sophie Cressall selected two respected international jurors to critically review the submissions of artwork: Holly Bynoe, Chief Curator at the National Art Gallery of Bahamas and Executive Director of ARC Magazine, and Valerie Cassel Oliver, Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Both jurors have extensive experience in the contemporary art arena. The artwork in the exhibition furthers the dialogue on contemporary art and quite possibly challenges perceptions about what type of art gets created on Islands. Innovative, diverse expressions that provoke versus placate can be expected. Adding to this and in a separate exhibition, Barbadian/ Canadian artist Joscelyn Gardner showcases Staging Mary Prince: in her own words; a multi-media installation that encompasses historical references, original screenplay, and layers of filmed performances. I encourage you to enjoy the beach, the golf, the diving and much more, and to take time to explore the variety of visual art experiences on Island. Please visit us soon in City Hall, Hamilton. art & culture ‘DR. SAVAGE’S BERMUDA’; DR. EDWARD HARRIS: This remarkable collection of paintings and sketches captures how these Islands appeared some 180 years ago in the 1830’s. Dr. Johnson Savage was a surgeon in the Royal Artillery who was posted to Bermuda’s British Army Garrison. He was also a talented artist with a wonderful eye for detail. The book also includes works by Savage’s son, Arthur, who painted whilst stationed here with the Royal Navy and an account of how the doctor’s grandson, another Arthur, used his cartographic skills to map the Islands in the last year of the 19th century. ‘IMAGEMAKING AND THE BERMUDIAN ARTIST’; DR. EDWIN M E SMITH: Dr. Smith is senior lecturer in art & design at Bermuda College. The images in his new book acknowledge, analyse and celebrate visual art created by other artists for whom Bermuda is, or has been, home. The collection features charcoal and acrylic compositions with imagery appropriated from one or more of these preexisting works and the supporting text provides context and an important insight into the work of the featured artists. ‘BERMUDA NATIONAL GALLERY, AN INTRODUCTION’; LISA HOWIE & SOPHIE CRESSALL: The collection at the Bermuda National Gallery is of international importance and features works from Africa, Europe and the America’s as well as from these Islands. Paintings, sculpture, textiles, photographs, furniture and silverware are all featured in this introduction, which was published to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the gallery’s opening.

historical stories House of Sand in the western North Atlantic BY DR. EDWARD CECIL HARRIS, MBE, JP, PHD, FSA

Harris Sand Dunes. In 1872, HMS Challenger visited Bermuda: its photographer recorded the ‘Travelling Sands’ of Paget Parish and all that was left of a buried house in a sand dune (Fay and Geoffrey Elliott Collection, National Museum).

In the nineteenth century, Bermuda was of interest to a new breed of scientists, being geologists who studied the formation of the Earth. A phenomenon (‘something that can be observed and studied and that typically is unusual or difficult to understand or explain fully’) that attracted the interest of such scholars visiting Bermuda at that period was the ‘travelling sands’ or ‘sand glaciers’ of the south shore. Of late, a wonderful pre-photography image of the mid-1830s by Dr. Johnson Savage MD has given us a vivid impression of one area of such dunes. In that view, the shifting sands have leapt over a boundary wall and are in the process of devouring a cedar forest. Other sand glaciers were recorded by photography, when HMS Challenger visited Bermuda in 1873. Now somewhat quiescent, the travelling sands were very active at times during the 1800s, and Bishop Inglis from Halifax observed the following on Monday, 25 May 1835: ‘Dr. Hunter took us in his boat, under a comfortable awning, first to Castle Island, between three and four miles, where we landed and went through the ruins of this ancient defence of Bermuda. The scenery is all-beautiful. We next rowed along the shore to Tucker’s Town, which legend says was once considerable, but now lies buried under Harris Sand Dunes. About 1835, Dr. Johnson Savage executed a painting of the travelling sands and in the lower 2014 picture by Mark Rowe, a part of the area thought to be depicted in the Savage image is found at the eastern end of Elbow Beach (Johnson Savage MD Collection, National Museum).

historical stories house of sand in the western north atlantic

Harris Sand Dunes. In this rock face, the trunk and some fronds of a buried palmetto palm were captured on camera in 2012 by Mark Rowe at Hungry Bay, Paget, preserved as a hole and impressions in the Bermuda limestone.

sand. All this may be doubted. Formerly there were more houses than at present exist in the neighbourhood, and many persons were injured by the accumulation of sand to the depth of 6, 8, and even 10 and 12 feet in some place, and probably this discouraged occupation in the neighbourhood.’ Bermudian hydrogeologist, Mark Rowe, has kindly commented on the travelling sands: ‘Notwithstanding their current state of relative stability, Bermuda’s coastal dunes exhibited pulses of mobility in the 19th century at several locations along the south shore. An example of such activity at Elbow Beach is depicted in Johnson Savage’s “Sand Hills” watercolour dating from 1833 to 1836. Reports, from about the same time, describe the burial of several houses by dunes at Tucker’s Town and of at least one house near Elbow Beach. At the latter location, dunes, which climbed to a height of 180 feet and advanced at rates of 10 to 20 feet per year, as documented by Lieut. Richard Nelson in 1837, were still active when visited, as an object of scientific curiosity, by British scientists of the Challenger Expedition in 1873. Later still, geologist Angelo Heilprin (1887) observed dunes at Elbow Beach and Tucker’s Town which he described as “great tongues of sand” and “sand glaciers…stealthily encroaching on hilltops of the interior and burying everything”.’ ‘These observations of “modern’, albeit relatively minor, dune activity provide a valuable insight into the formation of the Bermuda Islands, which are for the most part constituted of lithified (hardened) sand dunes. In fact, the geological term “eolianite”, meaning a rock created by the cementation of eolian (wind-blown) sands, was coined in Bermuda in 1931 by geologist Robert Sayles.’ Thus, Bermuda is but, geologically speaking, a house of sand in the vastness of the western North Atlantic. bermuda.com

do you know

About our Nine Parishes & who they are named after? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

Following the accidental settlement of Bermuda on July 28th 1609 by the survivors of the ‘Sea Venture’, the island was at one point occupied by only two, and later three, men. It wasn’t until 1612 with the arrival of ‘The Plough’ from England, that Bermuda was deliberately colonized and a Governor – Richard Moore – established. In 1616 Captain Daniel Tucker, after spending five years in Virginia, became Governor of Bermuda. An initial survey of Bermuda had began by Governor Moore, however, it was Governor Tucker who in 1616 called upon Richard Norwood to make a detailed survey and divide the island into eight Tribes, each sub-divided into fifty 25-acre plots. (The Bermuda Charter had specified that one quarter of the land was to be public land and this included St. George’s Island, St. David’s Island, Longbird Island, Smith’s Island, Cooper’s Island, Coney Island, Nonsuch Island, as well as a small portion at the eastern end of the Main Island). Richard Norwood had quite a task, calculating the exact size of the proposed eight Tribes from the remaining land, especially when considering that the island was covered in dense cedar forests, that there were no roads and that 120 islands were included! Still, he came up with eight Tribes of exactly the same size – 2.0355 square miles – each of which was divided into fifty 25-acre plots. Before sailing back to England with the data for his map in 1617, Richard Norwood became involved in what was known as the ‘overplus

This map of Bermuda engraved by Guijelm Blaeuw in 1630 shows the division of the island into eight Tribes and the subdivisions into 25-acre plots. If one person owned more that one plot, the total is shown as one plot and numbered accordingly.

do you know about our nine parishes... scandal’. Governor Tucker had been promised three shares of land by the Somers Island Company and Richard Norwood had made allowance for this ‘overplus’ in his calculations, however, as the survey was done from east to west, Governor Tucker’s ‘overplus’ would fall at the extreme west end of the island. As Richard Norwood approached the western end of the main island (now Southampton), he informed the Governor that he had seen a beautiful valley of ‘fatte and lustye soyle’. Delighted by this news, Governor Tucker abruptly ordered Norwood to continue the survey from the very western end of the island (now Sandys). The official reason for this change in plans was the fact that the western islands had not yet been invaded by rats and it would therefore be easier for Norwood to conduct his survey. Conveniently Governor Tucker’s ‘overplus’ now fell exactly into the area he wanted for himself. When he proceeded to build a large cedar house at public expense on his 200 acres of land, even the Somers Island Company in London was outraged and threatened to deprive him of his ‘overplus’ and the house he built at their expense. Fortunately he was able to send a huge consignment of tobacco to London which appeased the company and he was able to retain his now famous house, as well as almost half the property. The eight Tribes were eventually called Parishes and the eastern islands where Bermuda’s development started, became the ninth Parish – St. George’s. So who are they named after? In most cases they were Elizabethan aristocrats who considered themselves ‘Gentlemen Adventurers’ and who were the largest shareholders of their Tribe. From East to West, St. George’s is named after the Patron Saint of England, however, as Sir George Somers was the founder of Bermuda, many consider that St. George’s is named after him. Hamilton Parish is named after James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton; Smith’s Parish after Sir Thomas Smith; Devonshire after William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire; Pembroke after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke; Paget after William Paget, 4th Lord Paget; Warwick after Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick; Southampton after Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton and Sandys after Sir Edwin Sandys.

The family crests of each ‘Gentleman Adventurer’ shown here were painted by William Harrington on the occasion of Bermuda’s 350th Anniversary for display at the Bermuda Airport. Comments: netlink@link.bm

burgerlicious Read Between the Buns BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Honestly though, who doesn’t love a good burger? Bermudians are crazy about them and you’ll find at least one listed on most menus across the island. But if you need a recommendation first then try one of these beefy beauties...

6OZ HOMEMADE BURGER FROM THE BURGER BAR AT FLANAGAN’S IRISH PUB Pairs perfectly with a pint of Stella Artois Pairing by April Gosling Naude

SPONSORED BY

Flanagan’s Irish Pub This traditional Irish pub is a local favourite and has been around since the late 80s. Situated high above Hamilton’s Front Street, it has a nice view of the Harbour, and if you wish, you can sit outside on their spacious patio to enjoy the beautiful weather in June. The food is awesome. Mostly pub style offerings, but they also have some local specials (they are popular for their Codfish and Potatoes breakfast on the weekends.) During the week it’s a nice spot for lunch or dinner. Lots of fish dishes, as well as pasta, curries, subs, salads and pot-pies make their menu pretty eclectic for a casual dining spot, and the burgers are delicious! Nothing beats a homemade burger, and these are char-grilled to perfection with all the right ingredients inside to make them extra flavorful and juicy. Flanagan’s also offers sliders, veggie burgers and a Caesar chicken burger - with romaine lettuce and caesar dressing on top. It’s a lively spot too with great beer, wine and cocktails. They have a stage where you will sometimes see local artists, bands or DJ’s providing musical entertainment. Many locals come here for “pre-drinks” as it’s conveniently located close to the other bars and clubs on Front Street, where you can dance off some calories post dinner. Wait, did I forget to mention that Flanagan’s is actually two bars under one roof? Sports fans can catch the game at the Outback Sports Bar - a separate area where you can eat, drink and enjoy major sporting events on large flat screen TVs. Guests of the Hamilton Princess or the Royal Palms can easily find their way to Robin Hood for a little change of scenery (and a cheaper meal than they would normally find.) As a Pub, Restaurant & Sports bar in one - it’s quite spacious with a large outdoor seating area that you can enjoy rain or shine. They have really yummy food and mouth-watering pizza. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner; they also boast an eclectic menu and have recently added some curry specials that are proving to be very popular says the Manager. The Hood Burger is super tasty and you can also order miniature burgers “by the shot”, if you wanted something lighter. They have two chicken burgers on their menu as well (one grilled the other breaded), a garden burger and a fish burger too. This is another fun place to watch the game and mingle with locals. They frequently host fun events like their popular Tuesday Pub Quiz Night. This month you can watch the NBA playoffs or the UEFO Euro 2016 championship games on their plasma screens displayed throughout. Sanzibar Tapas & Burger Bar at Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort and Spa This new restaurant is located on Harbour Road, and like most hotels in Bermuda you don’t have to stay over-night to enjoy the Restaurants on site as a guest. Beau Rivage, the resort’s French-themed restaurant, attracts guests looking for the ultimate fine dining experience. However, management wanted to provide a causal alternative, so in 2015 they opened this cozy-but-chic tapas and burgers bar just next door.

burgerlicious read between the buns Open daily from 5pm-11pm, Sanzibar is not a place you would go for lunch, rather the interior gives it more of a lounge like feel and it’s a great place to bring a date or group of friends for cocktails and lite bites. They started off with just Tapas, but found it wasn’t enough. Sanzibar’s menu now offers fourteen very interesting burgers that range greatly in price and flavour. Most impressive is certainly their deluxe Sanzibar Burger, made with Kobe beef, featuring a mouthwatering lump of foie gras in the middle. They also have on their menu a Morrocan Burger made with lamb, a Turkey burger and a Garden burger amongst many more beefy options including the two stunning numbers below. Just be sure to work up a good appetite before dinner, as these are NOT your ordinary burgers. They are massive! And you can be rest assured that you’re getting your money’s worth here. The manager was quick to assert that the dramatic presentation was not merely for our camera but that’s actually how they look every night! Beau Rivage Restaurant .
