Bermuda haha Surviving Winter BY ROGER CROMBIE

With Bermuda’s often fierce humidity, salt matters. Constant sweating drains the system of precious bodily fluids, and we can’t have that. Licking sweaty people helps, but is not recommended. One winter, I caught the flu and went down like a French footballer in the penalty area. The experience led to a life lesson you may find useful. At first, it wasn’t too bad. A cough, a slightly sore throat. Then a persistent hacking set in, which made sleeping longer than half an hour impossible. I had to be seated straight up to sleep at all. If I did drop off, I’d wake not long after, dazed, sweaty and all a-splutter. It was no fun. One night, I woke abruptly after 90 minutes of glorious uninterrupted sleep, coughing like a man possessed. Sat upright as I was, a sharp cramp kicked in at the bottom of my stomach. I would have said ‘foot of my stomach’, but stomachs don’t have feet. Well, some do – armies march on their stomachs. Stumbling out of bed, I bent backwards to release the cramp. I’m good at bending backwards, after years of office work. On this occasion, I bent far enough to release the cramp, but in the process gave myself a hellish cramp in the back instead. Bending forward to ease the back cramp brought on the front cramp again. I twisted myself into a pretzel, like Thor immediately after releasing his magic hammer. It didn’t solve anything, but at least neither cramp got worse. The only cure I could think of was to drink a little salt water. That usually does the trick. Besides, there wasn’t anyone around to lick. Walking normally was out, so I lurched into the kitchen like the hunchback of Notre Dame. Did I mention that I was naked? I had become a twisted monstrosity, staggering fitfully towards the cupboard where the salt lives. It was in one of those little glass shakers that they give you with room service in hotels. Reaching down for it caused the renewed onset of the front cramp, so I leant sharply back and inadvertently threw the salt cellar over my shoulder. (It’s more traditional to spill salt first, before throwing some over your shoulder to blind the Devil.) The shaker crashed onto the tile floor and smashed into a large number of dangerous glass shards. I had nothing on my feet. Then came a moment, and it is of that moment that I write. I saw the hilarity of the situation, viewing things, as it were, from outside myself. The relaxation that followed eased the cramps and I was able to pick my way carefully out of the kitchen to the security of my slippers and a future of hope.

Lili Bermuda

Experience the Art of Perfumery BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

If you are one of the many visitors to marvel at Bermuda’s diversity of exotic flora, then a trip to the Bermuda Perfumery should top your list of must-see attractions. Each one of their exclusive fragrances is inspired by island-life and created with native botanicals, but in all honesty, a fondness for flowers isn’t required for you to enjoy some time at this iconic Perfume House. As one of the oldest remaining perfume houses in the world (est. 1928) a visit alone is said to be a rare cultural experience and fascinating history lesson. All of their sweet-smelling Lili Bermuda products are handcrafted and packaged on site, within Stewart Hall, a Bermuda National Trust owned property located in the heart of St. George’s. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over four centuries of incredible history, and while the legacy of this notable Perfume House is certainly longstanding, it continues to steadily evolve with the times, offering in addition to its collection of luxury fragrances a number of exciting and exclusive experiences for visitors as well. They welcome you to pop by for the free Tour of Operations, offered daily to anyone who may pass through their doors. The tour begins with a three-minute video introduction, followed by a presentation by the Master Perfumer. “We try to customize the tour to everyone’s levels of interest,” says Isabelle RamsayBrackstone. She is the third Perfumer to run the establishment since inception, and, eager to share her knowledge with other perfume enthusiasts, she offers a weekly Studio Workshop where you can create your very own signature scent. (The workshop is 4-hours long, $275 per person, and available until the end of the month by reservation only.) But for groups looking for perhaps a more a affordable and less time consuming option, a 50-minute Fragrance Seminar is offered for free on rainy days, during which participants will discover the world of olfaction and learn about essential oils and perfume making. Because they have such a passion for sharing the art of Perfumery with locals and visitors alike, the possibilities are endless when it comes to customizing a luxury experience for clients, Isabelle informs me. One such example is the Perfume & Champagne Pairing experience, a popular request for corporate clients or party planners hosting private events. “We work with a sommelier to create a threecourse tasting of champagnes and complementary fragrances” Isabelle proceeds to explain “Perfume is multi-sensorial. It triggers other senses so we can build an experience around that.” Traditional Afternoon High Tea is also offered by Sweet P every Wednesday and Saturday in the Bermuda Perfumery Garden, where again, luxury teas and finger food complement the fragrant atmosphere. Visit Lili Bermuda to learn more about their range of tours, luxury gifts and services: The Bermuda Perfumery, Stewart Hall, 5 Queen Street, St. George’s, +1 (441) 293-0627

Inspired by Bermuda

Bermudian artist Alexandra Mosher draws from the island’s natural beauty to create inspired, sculptural jewellery. “I create expressive and original pieces; they’re certainly conversation starters,” she explains. “There is nothing more fascinating than taking art as we know it and giving it a whole new context on the body. I make sculptures to be worn.” Considering Alexandra’s background as an artist, it is no wonder her intricately sculpted jewellery designs have been influenced by her studies in fine art. “I developed a love for craft at a very young age, and was often creating little presents for my parents out of assembled found objects,” she told us. “My family still has a collection of pretty little things I made them.” Alexandra studied Studio Art at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and later, Jewellery Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She launched her line of jewellery in 2005 and since that time has won several prestigious awards for her collections. Her process involves the ancient technique of lost wax casting; she first hand carves her designs in wax and then casts them in silver and gold in limited numbers. “I remember

reading an art critic’s review of my work and feeling like I was on the right path when he said he was surprised at how I could create such original pieces at such an affordable price.” Although her work is highly coveted, she has something for every level of collector. Alexandra is perhaps best known for her Bermuda Reef Collection in which she incorporates Bermuda’s famous pink sand into sterling silver and gold to create captivating pieces of wearable art. “‘Is it a gemstone?’ people ask me, and I just love watching their reaction when I explain how I’ve set our beautiful sand into each unique piece.” She told us that visitors often go on to say their daughter, sister or friend would never forgive them if they didn’t bring a little something from her pink sand collection back home as a gift. “It warms my heart to hear that,” she beams. Finding a little piece of your own is a delightful experience. Visit Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery’s Flagship Store & Studio at 5 Front Street in Hamilton. A selection of her jewellery also is available at A.S. Cooper & Sons stores island wide, at RESORT inside Hamilton Princess & Beach Club and at Regali Boutique at Rosewood Tucker’s Point. 10 ways

To Enjoy Springtime in Bermuda BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Warmer weather, longer days and pretty flowers are just a few reasons to be exited about the return of spring in Bermuda. Here are ten ways to celebrate:

1

Go whale watching

Humpback whales are a symbol of spring in Bermuda. As they make their annual migratory route this time of year, they pass through our waters and there are a number of tours bookable on Bermuda.com that allow you to watch them from a safe distance. (Read the Cover Story on pg. 37 to learn about local whale researcher Andrew Stevenson)

Explore the wild outdoors

When the early settlers first came to Bermuda they were astonished by the abundance of edible resources growing wildly across the island. Learn the folk tales and medicinal properties associated with native plants and herbs on a foraging tour. Wild Herbs & Plants of Bermuda tours take visitors for a walk on the wild side, followed by lunch prepared from your harvest.

3

Ride & dine in the East End

Cycling has become an increasingly popular mode of exploring the island, and there’s a new tour that lets you balance your calorie consumption with this healthy exercise. East End Eats Bicycle Tours is offered in the town of St. George’s, led by Kristin White- a self-proclaimed ‘foodie’ and East End Ambassador- she will take you to sample popular dishes at the best eateries in the area. (Tickets available on ptix.bm, info: 441-705-1838)

4

Visit the gardens

Plenty of sunshine all-year-round allows for a diverse range of flora to thrive in Bermuda, and there are many famous gardens across the island that are open to the public. See roses of every shade and class at the historic Waterville Estate, or tread down the hibiscus trails and smell the frangipani at the Botanical Gardens in Paget. At Palmgrove in Devonshire, water lilies float on a magnificent Bermuda-shaped pond.

5

Bermudiana Flowers

Join in the local traditions

Leading up to Easter, you can experience some of the customs we’ve inherited from Britain and adapted to our island lifestyle. Good Friday sees a colorful parade of traditional handmade paper kites grace the skies, and you can join in the annual celebration at Horseshoe Bay on the Southshore. Hot cross buns and codfishcakes are also a must-try, the Bermudian way is to eat them together like a sandwhich.

6

A Traditional Bermuda Kite

Catch an indie film

Hundreds of emerging film-makers from around the world have submitted to the Bermuda Shorts Competition, hosted by the Bermuda International Film Festival which will take place from March 17th to 25th. Film lovers will want to make their plans around this exiting week, which will see a bevy of events, workshops, and film screenings for film makers and film enthusiasts alike. 2017 brought plenty of stand-out makeup trends. Glitter freckles, squiggly brows and silicone sponges were all on the list. While we are not about to attempt to contour with a knife and fork and color our eyebrows bright blue we are still looking for Springs inspirational looks and trends that we actually don’t mind wearing on our weekly trip to the Grocery store.

A Pop of Color New York fashion week saw pops of color used in a nontraditional way. The ‘upside down eyeliner’ trend is a great way to incorporate color and is totally wearable. Use a colorful eyeliner or shadow such as Estee Lauder Double Wear Eye Pencil in Electric Cobalt or Clinique Lid pop shadow in Aqua Pop to line the bottom lash line, smoke it lower than the lash line for a softer look. Inner corner highlights are also opting for a more colorful approach. Try using something just as subtle but maybe with a hint of pink or gold such as the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks in Rose and Bronze.

Grown up Glitter

Hands up, who doesn’t love a bit of bling? While we’re not about to walk down the street with Unicorn glitter in our hair there’s no harm in slapping on a little adult glitter now and then. Keep it classy with Bobbi Browns Sparkle shadows. Apply as much as you like with your finger. Alone or as a topper, these shadows have just the right amount of subtle sparkle. My favorite shades? Sunlight and All Spice.

I Woke Up Like this Lips

While some occasions call for a bold lip with crisp lines, my comfort zone is a nourishing balm or gloss with a hint of color. So, imagine my excitement when I saw that the natural lip was one of 2018’s staple looks. Soft edges, a natural shine and a color close to your lip color is what it’s all about this spring. My go-to is Bobbi Brown’s Extra Lip tint in Popsicle, not only is it super nourishing but it gives the perfect amount of pink to keep my lips looking healthy. Not much of a pink girl? Try Clarins Instant Light Lip Balm Perfecter in Orange or Rosewood. For more Beauty advice, book a one-on-one with Lyndsey Scott-Furtado by calling 441-295-3961. A.S. The Big Day Plan Your Wedding in Bermuda BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

With the annual Wedding Expo happening this month on March 4th at Fairmont Southampton (see www.bermudaexpo.com) we thought we’d share some of our favourite services for planning a Bermuda-ful wedding.

It’s all about the dress! But unfortunatley, that means footwear is often an afterthought. Not to worry. Located on Queen Street in the City of Hamilton is Della Valle Handmade Sandals, a unique boutique where they offer all-Italian leather footwear, lovingly fashioned by sandalmaker Vincenzo Barbieri who as a young boy, trained with the masters in his hometown of Capri. In just a few hours, he can customize sandals for the whole Bridal Party to enjoy well beyond your wedding day! Everyone from the Bride to the Ringbearer can have a custom pair, (yes, he makes shoes for men and kids too) with styles that range from simple leather (available in 40 different colors) to dazzling crystals. Six heel heights and wide or narrow soles are also available, as is their boutique to host bridal party events and private bookings complete with espresso and/or champagne- for that extra special touch! (contact: dvsandals@gmail.com or 441-234-7263) When it comes to photography, Fiander Foto is quickly rising in popularity both locally and overseas having won the Couple’s Choice award this year on WeddingWire - a leading global online marketplace for the wedding and events industry. Melanie Fiander, the photographer, holds a Masters in Fine Art Photography and though originally from Washington DC, she has been based in Bermuda since 2013 after marrying Bermudian hubby Jim West. She specialises in Weddings and Family portraits and has undertaken a number of projects both on Island and overseas, but what she loves most about photographing in Bermuda is “it has a unique landscape and expression. It gives a home town vibe to a wedding” she told the Royal Gazette in an interview earlier this year. (contact: info@fianderfoto.com or fianderfoto.com) As for the ring, DavidRose in St. George’s has a reputation as one of Bermuda’s trendiest jewellery stores for bespoke luxury peices. The owners are husband and wife duo, David and Avrel Rose, who share a love of precious stones and metals, as well as helping other couples to create the ring of their dreams. The experience alone is said to be magical as they meet one-on-one with couples in their beautiful boutique on Water Street, overlooking the crystal blue waters of St. George’s harbour. And speaking of crystals, they carry a gorgeous selection of gems and stones including ethically sourced diamonds in a range of extraordinary colours. Treasures of the Sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

Cover Story

Meet the Photographer BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Andrew Stevenson always had a love of travel, photography and wildlife, but his passion for humpback whales was ignited the first time he saw one breach on a beach walk with his daughter one day. “Why do they do that?” she asked him, a question that would lead him to become one of the island’s most prolific whale researchers a few years later. That incident catapulted a decade of dedication to the study of these magnificent mammals, not only in Bermuda’s waters but also in oceans around the world. Each year Andrew tracks the whales on their annual migratory route from Bermuda to their Northern feeding grounds in Canada, and then back down to the Caribbean where they head to mate. He’s collected fascinating data comprised of both underwater and aerial video footage, as well as a photographic catalogue of whale flukes. Like a human fingerprint, each fluke tail has a unique pattern and markings, allowing Andrew to identify the same whales on several different occasions. In the last 10 years he has successfully identified 1,273 whales and his catalogue is likely one of the largest in the world captured by a single person. “The more I learn the more questions I have” he admits in humble reflection. Invited to present at a conference hosted by the Society of Marine Mammalogy in Canada last October, Andrew was honored to be one of the only speakers without a PHD, and yet his views were highly respected by those in the scientific community. “That’s because these people value the research that I’m doing. I don’t have the scientific background but I am getting thousands of hours out on the water in the Above: Aerial footage taken by Andrew Stevenson shows a middle of the ocean” he says, gam of humpback whales in Bermuda’s waters crediting Bermuda’s location to the value of his research. Andrew frequently visits Challenger Banks, a mid-ocean seamount about 12 miles south of the Island to meet the whales with his “flying tripod”. A commercial liscence to fly a drone issued by the Civil Aviation Authority and a permit from the Government’s Department of Environment has allowed him to capture stunning, aerial photography in recent years. But he’s not afraid to get in the water with his giant friends either, and with the extensive footage he’s filmed both above and below the whales he’s nearly finished creating the sequel to his multi-award-winning documentary ‘Where the Whales Sing’. The new film will reveal some of the harsher truths of Bermuda’s whaling history and also give insight into the social complexity of the animals. “It’s sort of a personal story, but I’m also showcasing the beauty of Bermuda and how we are in this ideal location to study the whales”, he tells me. His story will be told through the eyes of his daughters who will narrate the film, and he hopes to have it finished this summer. To learn more about Andrew’s work visit whales.bm, or to view/purchase his photography visit bermudaaerialography.com. The Bermuda.com App is a FREE Download

Do you know... About Juniperus BermudianaBermuda’s National Tree? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

Ever since Bermuda was colonized in 1609, Juniperus Bermudiana was used extensively as firewood and for constructing homes and ships. As early as 1622 legislation was passed to control the export of Bermuda cedar and although sixteen further acts were passed to restrict its use, ship-building denuded much of Bermuda by the 1830s. Fortunately this trend was reversed with the decline of ship-building and the use of cheaper imported timber by the construction industry and Bermuda cedar trees were again on their way to becoming the most dominant trees on the island, until the scale insects that is. Shortly after World War II, cedar scale insects Carulaspis minima and Lepidosaphesnewsteadi were accidentally introduced into Bermuda, resulting in the devastating loss of approximately 95% of Bermuda’s cedar trees. It was an ecological disaster that continues to affect us to this day. Several biological control species, including lady bird beetles, were imported to attack the cedar scale insects, but unfortunately to no avail. To reforest the island after the cedar blight, exotic trees like the casuarina, favoured for its rapid growth, were imported and they in turn created some of the invasive species problems we have today. An estimated 5% of Bermuda’s cedar trees were resistant to the scale and survived the insect attack of the 1940s. Using seeds from these scale-resistant trees is the basis of the effort to propagate and restore Bermuda cedar trees in gardens, parks and nature reserves throughout the island. The site should always be selected

carefully to allow enough room for the trees to grow to their approximately 50 feet height. It is estimated that there are now between 10,000 and 25,000 cedar trees in Bermuda, which is about 10% of the number of trees before the cedar blight of the 1940s. Today Bermuda cedar is still highly prized by craftsmen for making a variety of souvenirs.

The Bookmart review Defenses of Bermuda, 1612-1995 BY MARTIN BUCKLEY, DEPARTMENT MANAGER, THE BOOKMART AT BROWN & CO.

A Unique Work on the British and American built Fortifications of Bermuda. Bermuda has played an important military role between America and Europe for almost 400 years due to its location in the Western North Atlantic some 635 miles off the Carolinas halfway between Halifax and Jamaica. Bermuda was a key naval base for the Royal Navy after the American Revolution in 1783, and ultimately as allies with the United States. Defending its coastline (64 miles) and ports has been vital, resulting in the construction of over ninety forts and batteries, even though its total land mass is only 20.6 square miles. This concentration of fortifications (4.4 forts per square mile), British possession, and its small size led to Bermuda gaining the informal title of the “Gibraltar of the West”. Today, the legacy of these defense works remains either as disused structures or parks scattered throughout Bermuda. This lavishly illustrated new book provides an overview of the design, features, and operational history of Bermuda’s fortifications from the settlement of the islands in 1612 to the closure of the last defense base in 1995, as well as an update on what has happened to these fortifications since that time. It also provides an insight into which are the best ones to visit today through meticulous research and stunning, specially commissioned, color artwork. About the Authors: Terrance McGovern has authored five books and numerous articles on fortifications. He has also been the editor of the Fortress Study Group annual journal, FORT, and is a director of the International Fortress Council and Council on America’s Military Past. Dr. Edward C. Harris, MBE, JP, FSA is a well-known Bermudian archaeologist. Dr. Harris recently retired as the executive director of the National Museum of Bermuda. He is a frequent contributor to the annual Bermuda Journal of Archaeology and Maritime History, and has served as its editor. Copies available from The Bookmart at Brown & Co., 35 Front Street, Hamilton. For more information call 441-279-5443 or e-mail mbuckley@psl.bm.

Exploring Shipwrecks on Land National Museum of Bermuda BY ELENA STRONG

Over five centuries, hundreds of vessels have come to grief on Bermuda’s encircling reefs due to pilot error, raging storms, inaccurate charts and the historical inability to accurately determine position at sea. These wrecks are more than a collection of fascinating and precious objects— they are material records of Bermuda’s interaction with the Atlantic World, offering insight into life on board ship and the technology, activities, craftsmanship and cultures of the past. Not everyone has the opportunity to explore Bermuda’s shipwrecks in their watery habitat so an exhibit at the National Museum of Bermuda, Shipwreck Island, Sunken Clues to Bermuda’s Past, brings the island’s earliest shipwrecks, as well as their artefacts, stores and histories to land.

Left: Swatow-ware plate, San Pedro, 1596, Center: Chevron trade bead, San Antonio, 1621, Right: Bronze mortar & pestle, San Pedro, 1596.

Shipwreck Island tells the story of Bermuda’s discovery, early settlement and history from 1505 to 1684 through the lens of a collection of 16th– and 17th– century shipwreck artefacts recovered from local waters. It features over 1,500 objects, including large cannon, rare New World indigenous weapons, intact olive jars, silver coins, gold ingots, colonial pottery, medical, navigation and ship tools and exotic trade goods from the New World and Asia. The exhibit explores life aboard ship, the people who discovered the shipwrecks, marine archaeology and the importance of protecting our underwater cultural heritage for future generations. Visit the exhibit at the National Museum of Bermuda | 1 The Keep, Royal Naval Dockyard. Open daily: 10am - 5pm (last admission 4pm) info@nmb.bm / 441-234-1333 / www.nmb.bm The Bermuda.com App is a FREE Download
