Along the Coast Spend the day in the Royal Naval Dockyard, enjoying the coastal views, historic sites, charming shops, and lively pubs. Inside the Keep, the largest stone fortress ever built in Bermuda, is the award-winning National Museum of Bermuda, as well as an ocean water safe haven for the dolphins of Dolphin Quest. The humane mammal conservation programme lets you swim with these magnificent creatures, while supporting vital marine studies. (Contact 441 234 4464 or dolphinquestbermuda.com to learn more.)

Visit to see the beauty of these glittering limestone caves, and you’ll also learn about their history and formation on a guided tour. As you stroll along the floating pontoon walkway, your senses will be calmed by the echoing sounds of water droplets, falling from stalactites into the aquamarine pool below. Harbourside Hamilton Harbour comes alive with local vendors and entertainers each Wednesday night from 7-10pm at Harbour Nights - the Island’s signature summer event, bringing guests and locals together in an open and exciting environment. This family-friendly festival has been running for 25 years along Front Street, where you’ll experience Bermudian culture at its best. Inspired by Bermuda’s Beauty Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Who is Alexandra Mosher, you ask? She’s commonly known as ‘Bermuda’s Pink Sand Jeweller’, but simply put, ‘Artist’ is the title that Alexandra most identifies with. She describes her creative process as finding any means necessary to “get the vision out of my head through my hands”. From crafting as a child, to painting and sculpting as a Visual Arts Major in University - she’s never been afraid to switch artistic mediums over the years - eventually taking up jewellery making while living in New York, postgraduation. But she never dreamed she’d become a household name on her own island. “Basically I wanted to create my own version of a Bermuda Gem,” she says, reflecting on the early pink-sand-filled designs that launched her career. Fourteen years after her humble start-up, she’s an award-winning entrepreneur, with a cult following on social media, and a brand new store on the chic west end of Front Street where you can explore her evolving collections. In her studio/office workshop, I’m treated to a look behind the scenes. “Imagine a trio of pale blue, purple and soft pink stones clustered in here,” she says excitedly, showing me a new ring setting that she’s created. Using the ancient technique of lost-wax casting, she explains how she can carve out master models like this one that will allow her to cluster gemstones together “like a miniature flower arrangement.” She admits to being almost as captivated by her garden these days as by what’s under the sea, but it’s just as much the pink sand as it is “that handmade feeling” that’s her trademark. “I like to make pieces with a unique perspective, for people who want something a bit more personal,” says Alexandra who thrives off of the relationships she has with her clients. “I’m driven both by what people are looking for and what speaks to them, but also what speaks to me. It’s a symbiotic design process, and it’s so exciting!” Her work reflects the raw and organic elements found in nature - be it boiler reefs and sea shells along the coast, the delicate petals of a flower, or the wood grain texture of a palm tree. “I’m really happy to be working with a rainbow of color again”, she says, as the conversation turns to new projects. Her aesthetic has favoured a neutral palette up until now, with most of her sculptural pieces set in brilliant silver contrasted with cabochons of pink-sand, but in future, she assures me that we’ll be seeing a lot more gold pieces and colourful gemstones in her work. In her showroom you’ll find her popular coastal-inspired collections alongside newer designs that reflect other aspects of Bermuda. “I also have a case full of

one-of-a kind pieces that I’ve made in gold,” says Alexandra, adding that while everything is available for purchase on her website at AlexandraMosher.com, the store is the “sanctuary” in which to discover it all. She even won an Interior Design Award for her beautifully designed store and studio; boasting soft, powdery colours, high ceilings, and large windows framed by delicate linen drapes. Vintage display cases add a sense of luxury to the jewellery, and overall there’s a really great energy throughout. “The new space has been a game changer,” says Alexandra. Many customers are shocked when they learn that every single piece of jewellery is made on site. “Here we can really show people our process, and that’s the best part,” she continues. Her studio lies just beyond the showroom, and her team offers behind the scenes tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To learn how she transitioned from a onewoman-show, who once created and sold all of her jewellery single-handedly at pop-up shops and craft markets across the island, to have come this far in just over a decade proves that with passion and perseverance (and the help of a few pinksand fairies), dreams really do come true. Visit Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery’s Flagship Store & Studio at 5 Front Street in Hamilton, and be inspired too! It’s a delight to explore and you can find your own handmade treasure to serve as a reminder of your time in paradise. Call 441-236-9009 or email hello@alexandramosher.com. Cooper’s Island

Bermuda’s parks and nature reserves are scattered around the island like a green necklace, providing quiet, tranquil areas to explore, picnic and bird watch. Pack a lunch, take your binoculars and camera and enjoy what has been carefully preserved: Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve (pictured above) is located at the eastern end of Bermuda, in St. David’s. The nature reserve is 12 acres of unspoiled natural beauty, now part of Bermuda’s national parks. Until 1995, the area was restricted and occupied by the US Military and used by NASA to house a tracking station. On its east is Cooper’s Island Road with a stretch of quiet beaches and on its west beautiful Castle Harbour. Clearwater Beach and Turtle Beach are two of the public beaches located next to the reserve and there is a seasonal beach house with rentals. You can find nature trails through a vast stretch of woodland area with introduced botanicals like Brazil pepper, casuarinas and allspice, there are patches plus native Bermuda cedars, palmettos and olive woods which are being reintroduced to the reserve. Spittal Pond, located in Smith’s Parish, is the largest and the most premium nature reserve and national park on the island, spreading over 64-acres. It is also a large bird sanctuary and one of the best bird watching locations in Bermuda. Most of the bird-life can be seen from the trail itself and you can visit the is a historic landmark, Portuguese Rock, where shipwreck survivors left their mark in the 1500’s. Hog Bay Park. Hog Bay Park is a quiet stretch of rural land featuring agricultural fields, woodlands and an old lime kiln. You won’t see any habitation, roads or hear any noise as you meander along the networks of trails that go around the park. Bird watchers should bring their binoculars as the park is a mecca for resident and migrant birds. The trails lead to the coast line and offer panoramic views to the east and west. To reach Hog Bay Park take bus route 7 or 8. The entrance and car park is on Middle Road, Southampton. visit bermuda.com or download our app for more infomation

Historic Forts

Gates Fort

Bermuda Forts are easy to find and in picturesque areas - you don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy them. Most have been restored, some are in parks, but all have gorgeous views. Bermuda boasts impressive fortifications built through out the past five centuries. By the end of the Second World War over 70 sites had been fortified through out the island. Forts are the oldest stone buildings in Bermuda and represent every stage of the island’s development from a small, isolated outpost settled by the Virginia Company in the 1600s, to what became the “Gibraltar of West” in the 1800s and beyond. Many of the earliest and most impressive forts are located in the east end, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bermuda’s location in the North Atlantic gives it an important strategic position between the European and North American continents. The island’s most feared enemies were first Spain, then France, then the United States of America (1781 to early 19th century), then France again and Germany during World Wars I & II. Fortifying Bermuda against enemies was a deliberate British policy from the earliest days and was successful as Bermuda was never attacked. Bermuda forts were built in stone, when in the rest of British North America at the time, as well as Spanish territories and French possessions, forts were wooden. The island boasts the best example of British masonry coastal defense through the centuries outside of Britain. Lack of scrap industries in Bermuda, and being far away from world and regional wars, meant that while fortifications, carriages, guns and other materials got melted down elsewhere for re-cycled use during various wars, those in Bermuda stayed and became artefacts of exceptional military interest. Good examples are the rifle muzzle loaded guns still on their original carriages and platforms at various local forts. visit bermuda.com or download our app for more infomation

explore historic forts A FEW RECOMMENDATIONS: Scaur Hill Fort and Park This fort was built defend the Royal Naval Dockyard against the Americans during the war of 1812. Then in the 1940s, American guns defended the fort during WWII. While exploring, look for the deep gun pits and galleries which go deep into the hillside. The ramparts offer spectacular views of Ely’s Harbour and the Great Sound. To reach Fort Scaur take bus number 7 or 8. Both travel between Dockyard and Hamilton. Fort Hamilton Offers magnificent views over the City of Hamilton and its harbour. The upper levels and battlements have been landscaped with lawns, which make a fine place for a summer picnic. Entry is across a wooden bridge over the deep dry-moat and there are plenty of cannons and ramparts inside. Make your way down into the moat to visit the lovely gardens maintained by the Corporation of Hamilton. Gates Fort Gates Fort sits right on the edge of Town Cut, a channel created for ships to enter St. George Harbour. As you walk into Gates Fort, you will find two George III guns mounted and at the top of the fort, you will see the great advantage British soldiers had defending the entrance of the harbour. Gates Fort may be reached from the Town of St. George’s, at the end of Cut Road which goes along the coastline. Alexandra Battery The Battery sits next to Frobisher’s Building Bay, where the Deliverance was built in 1610 to take shipwreck survivors on to Virginia. It was completed in the 1860s and features a 9-Inch muzzle loader at the southern end. To reach the Battery, continue past Gates Fort along the coastline.

Pink Sand Beaches

Horseshoe Bay

John Smith’s Bay Off the beaten track in Smith’s parish, this popular locals’ beach is a little less crowded than the western south shore destinations, but still boasts soft sand and great swimming and snorkeling. The Harrington Hundreds grocery store is just a few minutes away by moped if you want to make your own picnic. Bus route 1. Warwick Long Bay To truly grasp the beauty of Bermuda’s south shore, walk the length of Warwick Long Bay and clamber across the rocks, or take a detour over the sand dunes to Jobson Cove and Chaplin Bay. On a quiet day in the spring and summer you will see more longtails than fellow tourists. Bus route 7. Shelly Bay A parent’s dream beach, Shelly Bay boasts warm, shallow water, a soft sandy bottom and backs on to a playground and sports field. A favourite for kids and novice swimmers – and close to the bus stop. Bus route 10 or 11. Church Bay Swim with shoals of brightly coloured parrot fish among the pristine coral reef that pierces the water just yards from shore at this small South Shore bay, widely revered as Bermuda’s best beach for snorkelers. Bus route 7. Clearwater Beach There is a choice of beautiful beaches to choose from on St. David’s Island in the east end: Clearwater Beach is next to a playground and has a seasonal beach house; Turtle Bay is a lovely cove which is great for snorkeling; and the nature reserve boasts stretches of soft sand at the end of every path. Bus 6 from St. George’s. Tobacco Bay Famous for its stunning limestone formations – natural sculptures that emerge from the glassy water, this picturesque, sheltered cove is also a snorkelers’ dream. The short walk from the old town of St. George is well worth it. There is a beach house for rentals, food and drink, in the summer months. Horseshoe Bay A crescent of soft, pink sand, lapped by clear blue water, fringed by sand dunes and bordered with sandstone cliffs, garnished with swaying palms – Horseshoe, in Southampton Parish, is the mecca of the island’s beaches and a must for every Bermuda visitor. The East End

Special Events in July BY KRISTIN WHITE

Festivals, sporting matches, concerts … summer in Bermuda means there’s loads to do every week! And although much of the action is more centrally located, the East End still has its great line-up of fun events. If you’re lucky enough to be on island on any of these dates, be sure to find your way there. Portuguese Festival of the Holy Spirit, St. George’s Town Square Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1, 5-11pm both days Bermuda has a large Portuguese community and through food, music, religious processions, and floral displays, guests are able to experience and celebrate Portuguese culture. This is one of my favourite East End events. Do not miss the fresh, hot malasadas (donuts)! Cup Match Extravaganza St. George’s Town Square Friday, July 20, 6.30pm onwards Centred around a century-old cricket match between St. George’s and Somerset Cricket Clubs, Cup Match is Bermuda’s biggest summer holiday. Last year, the game was hosted in the East End, so for 2018 will head to Somerset, but the annual celebration in honour of the St. George’s team takes place as usual right on Town Square. Live music, food, and fun for the whole family – emceed by yours truly! Wear light blue and dark blue, the colours of the St. George’s team! I SUPPOSE if you must cheer for Somerset, put on red and blue instead. www.corpstgeorge.bm Groundswell Lionfish Tournament & Festival, Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences ***Postponed until September** Lionfish are a scourge on our oceans. This invasive fish has no natural predators, reproduces like crazy, and gobbles up all of the tiny sealife that keep our reefs healthy. During Groundswell’s annual tournament, teams of lionfish hunters head out to gather up as many as they can find, then bring them back to BIOS for an ‘Eat Em to Beat Em’ cookout and family-friendly festival. www.reefspect.com Eastern Counties Cricket, Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club Saturday, July 21, 11am onwards County cricket is another Bermuda tradition. And whether you go to watch the cricket, play crown and anchor, get some conch fritters, drink with friends or all of the above, it’s one of the best days out you can have in Bermuda. ABOUT KRISTIN & SHOSHANNA: Kristin has lived in St. George’s since 2003 and developed a love affair with the town. Her store, Long Story Short is on Water Street, and from there, she offers amazing tours, bicycle rentals, custom hula hoops and a curated collection of gifts and books. Shoshanna is her bicycle, perpetual companion, and the 2018 Best of Bermuda award winner for best Bermuda character.

The House on the Hill National Museum of Bermuda BY JANE DOWNING, REGISTRAR, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA

Top Left: Commissoner’s House Today Top Bottom: Royal Marines in residence c 1885 Right: The Hall of History Mural

The beautifully restored Commissioner’s House, with its wrap-around verandahs, dominates the skyline at Dockyard and commands sweeping views of the sea. Constructed of Bermuda stone, with an unusual prefabricated cast iron frame, the House was built between 1823 and 1827 by convicts, slaves and local labour. Designed around a central lightwell to maximise cooling air circulation, the enormous structure served as the residence of the Commissioner of the Dockyard and his family for only 10 years before conversion to a barracks for the Royal Marines. During the 20th century the House was taken over by the Royal Navy as a “stone frigate” or shore establishment, and formally commissioned as a ship—HMS Malabar. From 1939 to 1945 it was the Allied headquarters for North Atlantic submarine radio interception. After the war it fell into disrepair, to be rescued by the Museum in an award-winning restoration and re-opened to the public in 2000. Today, in addition to taking in the grand architecture and glorious views, you can browse exhibits on the diverse origins and experiences of Bermuda’s people and the rise of the tourism economy. The ground floor chronicles the history of Bermuda’s 90-odd fortifications over three centuries, from settlement in 1612 to the demise of coastal defence in 1957, and celebrates the men and women of Bermuda who served locally and abroad, including 115 who gave their lives in the two World Wars. The piece de resistance is a stunning floor-to-ceiling mural in the rear stairwell. Tracing the 500-year human history of Bermuda, local artist Graham Foster’s grand mural has captured the imagination of all ages, telling the island’s story with vibrant detail, irreverent humour and poignant observations. Other displays include Bermuda coins and currency, maritime art, ship models, Bermuda Race memorabilies and a dollhouse furnished with miniature replicas of Bermuda antiques. The Bookmart Review

New Release - Nicknames by Ras Mykkal BY MARTIN BUCKLEY, DEPARTMENT MANAGER AT THE BOOKMART AT BROWN & CO.

Welcome to Bermuda! While you’re here, if you walk into a bar, get onto a bus, stroll along a street or just sit and watch the world go by, chances are you’ll hear someone referred to by their nickname. Nicknames are as Bermudian as codfish and potatoes and the people of these Islands have a long and rich tradition of giving and using them. Now Bermuda based author Ras Mykkal has captured the essence of this very Bermudian phenomenon in his new book ‘Nicknames –

How You Got Your Nickname’.

The book dives into the stories behind the interesting ways Bermudians have had a substitute name ‘pinned’ on them and how they often become better known by this than by whatever happens to be written on their birth certificate. Ras Mykkal photographed and interviewed all the Bermudians featured in the book and former Member of Parliament, Educator and Author, Dale Butler wrote the foreword. Mr Butler is also the author of a previously published book on Bermuda nicknames. The book includes a brief history on forenames, surnames and common nicknames, but at the real heart of it are the stories behind how Bermudians earned their nickname. All Bermuda is represented in the book; from Somerset to St. George’s, male and female, some famous public figures and the ‘ordinary’ guy in the street, as well as a few of the infamous. The stories behind the nicknames are varied, often very funny and always unique to each person. Some bring back memories of old TV shows, cartoons and iconic characters from yester-years whilst others are so complicated and obscure as to almost defy explanation. Arguably no other place in the world produces and uses nicknames so widely in this fashion. With the passing of time and the loss of Bermudian icons like Allan “Forty” Rego, Ernest “Country Wild Rabbit” Holman and William “Cheese” Ray, this book is sure to become a collector’s item cataloging as it does a unique part of Bermuda’s culture. ‘Nicknames – How You Got Your Nickname’ is one of a huge range of Bermuda published books available from The Bookmart at Brown & Co. The Bookmart at Brown & Co., 35 Front Street, Hamilton. www.bookmart.bm Open Monday-Saturday: 8:30am- 6pm, Sundays: 1-5pm

Do You Know

...About Nathaniel North – Bermudian Pirate and Rajah in Madagascar? BY HORST AUGUSTINOVIC

Nathaniel North from Tucker’s Town, left Bermuda in 1689 at the age of seventeen to work as a cook on a Bermuda sloop. On reaching Barbados he was impressed for a man-of-war of King William’s navy, but managed to make a quick escape by jumping overboard and swimming ashore. He spent the next few years smuggling and privateering, eventually capturing the 18-gun Brigantine Pelican with some shipmates. Having obtained a commission to attack French shipping near West Africa, they instead sailed to the Indian Ocean where they captured a Madagascar chief whom they managed to ransom for $1,000. Having been elected quartermaster of the ‘Pelican’ by her crew, Nathaniel North, with two other pirate ships captured the Great Mohammed with a large booty of gold coins. Having apparently not fully joined the battle, the Pelican did not share in the booty and pursued her fortunes along the Malabar

coast of India. There they captured three ships of which they kept one and renamed her Dolphin. During a hurricane the ‘Dolphin’ was badly damaged and Nathaniel North and his fellow pirates returned to Madagascar where they repaired the Dolphin and split their booty, with each pirate receiving around £700. Becoming quartermaster of the Dolphin in 1699, they plundered a large Danish ship and sailed to St. Mary’s Island to divide their loot. When four British warships arrived, they decided not to surrender, but rather burn the Dolphin. While some of the pirates accepted a pardon, Nathaniel North did not trust the British and decided to flee in a small boat to Madagascar. Having overturned in a storm, he had to swim twelve miles to shore, losing everything he owned. Nathaniel North then served on the Defiant and became its captain in 1704 and after a period of pirating, became the ruler of a pirate colony in Ambonavoula. In 1707 he sailed again as quartermaster of the Charles, capturing two British ships. When becoming captain of the Charles, he had the misfortune of wrecking her on a reef. A wealthy man, Nathaniel North then settled in Madagascar in 1709, living with the King of Maratan and finally acquiring an estate and ‘several wives and children’. At some point during a native conflict, Nathaniel North was captured by the opposing natives and killed. It is also claimed, however, that he was murdered by the family of one of his young wives ‘for his poor treatment of her’. Either way it seems a predictable ending to the extraordinary life of this young man from Tucker’s Town. About Horst: Horst is a passionate philatelist, history buff, collector and author who has published several books on Bermuda’s history, including the series ‘What You May Not Know About Bermuda’, and ‘The Golden Age of Bermuda’s Postcards’. Treasures of the Sea Atlantic Jewellery Studio BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau Inside of the Washington Mall is a store with ocean blue walls, whimsical marine décor in the windows, and unique handmade jewellery displayed from wall to wall. As you step inside, you get the feeling of being below deck on an elegant pirate ship filled with prized jewels of the Atlantic. And the treasures you will find there are endless. Bermuda Medallions, Historic Hog Penny replicas, a myriad of stackable rings, necklaces created with mystical gems and Bermuda’s iconic pink sand and sea glass… “We do a lot of nautical and ocean themed pieces, but I don’t like to limit myself either” says the shop owner, Jacquie Lohan. With over 20 years experience, you could say she is one of Bermuda’s more accomplished jewellers. She loves working with precious metals and gemstones, but she’s also a passionate surfer whose infatuation with the ocean reveals itself in Atlantic Jewellery Studio’s collections. Since establishing the business, she’s won numerous awards and even had her Jewellery featured on a Bermuda postage stamp. But she’s not one to hog the spotlight and has consistently celebrated the work of others. There’s ‘something for everyone’ in her showroom, where you’ll find not only her designs on display, but also designs made by fellow artist-friends and most importantly her apprentice, Jocelyn Powell. “Jocelyn has been with me for over 12 years. She is so talented and makes a lot of the pieces here,” Jacquie says. Jocelyn crafts many lovely designs out of Bermuda elements such as pink sand, cedar, and the store’s extensive collection of gemstones and pearls. She also collaborates with Jacquie to design one of the studio’s most popular creations - ‘The Bermuda Medallion’. The silver-sculpted pendants are truly unique pieces fit for any aspiring mermaid. They contain rare pieces of our coloured sea-glass, pink sand, replicas of tiny sea-shells cast in silver, and resemble the little tide-pools left on the rocks by the waves. “I think they really capture the essence of Bermuda” says Jocelyn. The medallions are wonderful keepsakes that let you cherish the Island forever.

Boutique Finds Airy Heights Design BY BRIGITTA WOHLMUTH

Left: A cast Bermuda Cedar Branch closely resembles bird legs and talons holding a pair of Herkimer Diamonds Center: Opal triangle handset in oxidised Sterling, plays on the Bermuda Triangle Theme. Right: Slim band rings hand cast from a Bermuda Cedar Branch.

“If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” Vincent van Gogh The above quote is basically Elisa Stubbs’ whole philosophy on life. But turning raw elements like fish bones, sea shells, oleander leaves, and cedar branches into luxurious, wearable jewellery is no small feat. “Hand crafted or made by hand, it’s always such a hard line” reflects the artist behind Airy Heights Design, regretting the ‘hobbyist’ connotation associated with those adjectives that describe her process. Inspired by nature, her sketches are then carved in wax and individually cast, or worked directly in metal by local Goldsmith, Lynn Morrell - whom she credits for helping “translate her designs” into fine jewellery with a modern, bohemian feel. You may have seen her collections before on display at select boutiques within the Hamilton Princess Hotel, Fairmont Southampton Hotel, and Rosewood Tuckers Point Resort - but there’s even more to explore online at airyheights.com. For those who favour a more intimate shopping experience, a private viewing can be arranged at her home studio. Hypnotised by a rainbow of crystals, gemstones and geodes before me, on my visit I find myself gravitating towards nearly every Herkimer Diamond on her table. “It must mean something on a deeper level,” she tells me, testifying to the metaphysical properties of different stones and colours. She particularly enjoys these not-seen-but-felt aspects of working with the materials, all of which she sources personally. Through a decidedly minimalist design approach, her work allows the materials to speak for themselves - and those stones were practically singing to my soul on this occasion. The former psychology major began studying more holistic schools of thought around the same time that she started making jewellery. “Friends of mine were training to become kinesiologists and I got into that too,” she tells me, she began to create prescribed pieces for friends and family “based on their needs” and today, a library full of books on essential oils, crystals and colour therapy is in her home, guiding her design process. ‘Wear in good health’ is the motto on her website, and due to the emphasis on the materials chosen, most pieces are truly one-of-a-kind, intended to serve as a personal talisman or good luck charm for the wearer. With each purchase you receive a card stating the inspiration behind the piece and the associated metaphysical properties, just for fun, she says “Whether they believe it or not, it can’t hurt, and if it makes you feel good that’s all that matters.” To see more jewellery, call 441-333-1230 to arrange a viewing, or visit airyheights.com Follow on Instagram @airyheightsdesign
