Time to take your medicine The Phoenix Stores discusses the benefits of “reminder” packaging that helps you know when to take your prescription drugs Q: What is an MDS blister pack? A: A monitored dosage system [MDS] is a method of dispensing tablet and capsule medications that helps manage the days and times when they should be taken. An MDS blister pack contains medications for the week organised in clear pods by the day and time of day you should take them whether at breakfast, lunch, supper, or bedtime. Q: Who can benefit from using an MDS blister pack? A: If you are required to take one or more medications daily, you can make use of an MDS blister pack; also, those who find it difficult to organise or remember to take their medication at the correct time each day can benefit from the use of an MDS blister pack. Caregivers and nursing homes often find the blister packs useful.

A: Should an order change after an MDS blister pack is dispensed, just return any unopened packs to the distributing pharmacy along with your new prescription to have your MDS blister packs dispensed per your new medication requirements. Q: Can I obtain an MDS blister pack as a walk-in customer? A: As a walk-in customer, please be prepared to collect your MDS blister pack later that day or within 24 hours.

What eye exams say about your overall health

During a routine eye examination, the optometrist checks your eyeglass prescription and the health of your eyes inside and out. Great attention is given to the condition of your eyes as it relates to the health of your whole body. Many people don’t realise that some disease processes can first be detected in the eye. Signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol can present themselves in the retina and can first be seen by an eye doctor during a dilated exam. Bleeding, cholesterol deposits, and changes in blood vessels may be early signs of something greater going on that, if detected early enough, can be dealt with before things get out of hand. Eye examinations are especially important if you are a contact lens wearer. Did you know that a contact lens is a medical device that needs to be fit properly on the eye? The optometrist needs to make sure enough oxygen is getting to the front of your eyes and that there aren’t any scratches or preventable issues going on due to an ill-fitting or outdated lens. There are many different materials, sizes, and modalities that can be used to make sure you are seeing your best and staying healthy at the same time. Contact lenses can also be used to change the color of the eye or in some cases is the best option for getting optimal vision due to certain eye diseases. Atlantic Vision Care will customise the most appropriate lenses to suit your needs and also give your eyes and your overall health that all-important check-up. www.atlanticvisioncare.bm

Q: How is the MDS blister pack filled? A: A qualified pharmacist fills each MDS blister pack per the doctor’s prescription[s]; each pack is sealed and labelled with dosage instruction. Q: Suppose I get a month supply of MDS blister packs, but my prescription Health & Beauty 2018

his procedure offers great advantages for those who suffer from arthritis, hand tremors, or M.S. and have also made a tremendous Vey fine brow

difference to chemotherapy patients or those that have lost their brows due to a thyroid imbalance or just the thinning process that sometimes occurs with age. This procedure means you no longer have to struggle with the daily application of eyebrows, plus you enjoy the freedom to swim and other physical activities without the fear of your brows disappearing. The treatment can last indefinitely if topped up annually. If you decide you no longer require top ups, they will fade away over a three-to-five-year period, depending on how your skin has absorbed the pigment. WELLNESS

Improving your health, wellness, and fitness By Elwood Fox, D.O., board-certified physiatrist and medical director of Rehabilitation, Sport, and Lifestyle Medicine at Bermuda Wellness and Outreach Center

T

here is a healthcare crisis in Bermuda. With healthcare expenditures at $700 million annually and a population of less than 70,000, we’re spending more than $10,000 per person per year – an amount that surely is unsustainable. The impact of chronic diseases is literally crippling all aspects of our community. Government and charities are receiving more cries for help than ever before. The number of people being treated for diabetes, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and cancer are growing and growing. We now know that lifestyle has a greater impact on the development of chronic diseases than genetics – and that true wellness can be gained by addressing issues pertaining to our lifestyle. To improve our health, we need to focus on three pillars: diet, physical activity, and stress management. This isn’t easy. The human condition is complex and influenced by many factors related to our interactions with our environment. This is all perceived through our brains, which, in turn, generate thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The ultimate goal is to help each individual design and implement his or her own personal wellness plan and guide that individual toward obtaining optimal health. The mission of Bermuda Wellness and Outreach Centre (BWOC) is to improve the overall health, well-being, and quality of life of our community. BWOC was created by a family physician and a health educator who are committed to helping people live healthier lives. At BWOC, an environment exists to provide services to help people manage chronic diseases through lifestyle changes. This multipronged attack is offered

It also networks with

other specialists to provide you with every opportunity to make a meaningful change in your lifestyle and health. HEALTH NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center at 525 E 68th St.

Heart health How NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and CORE are helping Bermudians take better care of their hearts

W

hen navigating Bermuda’s complex healthcare landscape, it’s crucial for consumers to know they have a choice when it comes to their treatment options. Your health, after all, is your most important asset, and making a life-changing medical decision deserves the same amount of research and consideration that you would dedicate to a large-scale purchase like a car or a new home. In fact, it demands even moreso. When you start viewing yourself as a consumer purchasing healthcare as a “product” over which you have control, you begin to realise that quality matters and that average as the status quo is no longer an option. Your life may depend on where you choose to get treatment, and that’s why Bermuda’s CORE Heart Health Center has officially partnered with NewYorkPresbyterian Hospital (NYP) to bring an unprecedented standard of the quality care to Bermuda’s cardiac patients. NYP is the #1 hospital on the east coast of the U.S. for cardiology and heart surgery (as ranked by U.S. News & World Report)

18

and has been rated the #1 hospital in New York overall for the past 17 years running. Its partnership with the CORE Center – the world’s first primary prevention/secondary rehabilitation cardiac care center that is covered by major medical insurance – gives Bermuda residents with heart health issues access to world-class cardiologists without having to fly overseas. Twice per month on a rotating basis, cardiologists Dr. Christopher Irobunda and Dr. John Heitner visit the island on behalf of NYP to evaluate heart patients. These services come at zero co-pay to those who have major medical insurance, with Bermuda Heart Foundation absorbing the patient cost as part of its charitable remit to ensure access to affordable care whenever possible. “If people have preventable risk factors, CORE is a facility that offers a kick-start to a strong lifestyle modification initiative,” says Dr. Irobunda. “This allows us to focus on key aspects of cardiovascular health such as exercise, weight control, healthy eating, and stress reduction.” He also adds that, through partnering with

CORE, he is able to examine people who are already living a healthy lifestyle and see what other factors could be affecting their heart health. NYP has considerably raised its profile in Bermuda since the CORE partnership was reestablished in summer 2017, having sponsored The MarketPlace Santa Claus Parade in November and the Butterfield & Vallis 5k Run/Walk in January. It also held a well-received continuing medical education event at the Hamilton Princess Hotel on February 3, where local medical professionals could earn up to five international CME credits by attending multiple lectures from some of NYP’s top doctors. Topics discussed included the latest developments in cardiology and nephrology coming out of their two teaching hospitals (Weill Cornell Medical Center and Columbia University Medical Center). NYP and CORE’s commitment and dedication to the moral and ethical delivery of preventative care are rivaled only by their work to ensure that they are making a difference – not a profit. Remember, it’s your body, your health, and you deserve the best. The rankings speak for themselves. Telephone 232-2673 or email info@bdaheart.bm to find out more about how NYP is helping amazing things happen in Bermuda. Health & Beauty 2018

Numerous science-based studies have found that doing this type of exercise regularly produces significant effects on physiological well-being, body composition, and range of motion. Here’s the skinny on the main mind– body disciplines: Tai chi roots itself in the Chinese philosophy of qi (chi), yin, and yang. The qi is the energy force that flows through the body. Tai chi is said to unblock and encourage the proper flow of our qi/ life force. The yin and yang are the opposing elements thought to make up the universe that need to be kept in harmony. Tai chi is said to promote this harmonious balance. Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early twentieth century by Joseph Pilates. A system of exercises using special apparatus, it is designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and

posture and enhance mental awareness. According to Wikipedia, yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline utilising breath control, meditation, and specific body postures to gain better health, better relaxation, and better focus. Body flow (also known as body balance) combines the amazing benefits of all three of the above disciplines. Research teams from Les Mills and Penn State University looked at recent studies to find out exactly what physiological benefits can be gained from tai chi, yoga, and Pilates.

One study measured the effects of doing body flow three times a week for 12 weeks. Participants saw reductions in anxiety and significant increases in core strength and hip mobility. Regular body balance practice can provide greater mental focus, stronger core muscles, and better range of motion for the hips. You can try body flow right here in Bermuda through Studio One. Seniors: Tips for healthy living Fluid fitness A gentle swim or water aerobics is a great way to maintain physical strength, flexibility, and joint mobility as you age. The National Sports Centre offers swimming lessons as well as low-impact aerobics classes, which are suitable for anyone of any age and any fitness level. the brain active, and also promotes physical activity.

Brain games To maintain cognitive health, you need to keep the brain active. Whether through reading, doing puzzles, playing a musical instrument, and hobbies – or why not teach or take a class? The Government’s Community Education Programme offers many possibilities: www.gov.bm/ community-education.

Walk Walking at a brisk pace will not only improve your health but also increase endorphins and stave off depression. You will get the greatest benefit by moving at a pace that gets your heart rate up. Walk the Railway Trail, walk the beaches, or join the Walking Club of Bermuda: www.walk.free.bm.

Volunteer Many studies show that seniors who volunteer their time and energy to support their community have lower disability and higher levels of wellbeing, compared with those who do not volunteer. It makes you feel good, prevents isolation and depression, keeps Health & Beauty 2018

Maintain a healthy weight Extra weight increases your risk for many health problems, e.g., high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Eat nutritious foods in the right amounts to help you stay healthy. Because of the heat and humidity, in Bermuda we tend to drink a lot of our calories and often far more than we need. Stay away from sugary drinks – and not just colas. Many iced teas and sports drinks have upward of 10 teaspoons of sugar. Water should be your primary beverage.

Stay up to date on medical screenings Don’t put off that doctor visit; get an annual

check-up. Woman should get regular (as recommended by your physician) screenings for breast cancer. Men should be checked for prostate cancer. Get regular dental, vision, and hearing checkups.

Prevent skin cancer Protect your skin from the sun at all times – not just when you go to the beach. Your skin gets thinner as you age, and UV light from the sun destroys collagen and elastin, which keeps the skin firm. Skin also becomes more fragile and easily bruised as you age. Exposure to sunlight is the main culprit in aging skin. So stay out of the sun, cover up, wear a hat, and use sunscreen. Look for a brand of sunscreen that does not contain chemicals that are harmful to our reefs.

Manage Stress Spending time with family and friends has been shown to help reduce stress. Meditation and yoga are both ideal stress relievers for seniors. They can be practiced without any special equipment or special ability. Pets can offer soothing comfort for their owners. If you don’t want to keep a cat or dog of your own, cuddle a neighbours cat, or offer to take a friend’s dog for a walk. 21

id you know some medicines are potentially inappropriate in older adults because of ineffectiveness and high risk of side effects? You may have taken these medicines for years without a problem. However, due to changes in the function and make-up of your body as you age, some medicines can cause problems. This is not only true of prescription drugs; over-the-counter medicines pose risks as well. Over-the-counter antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) and diphenhydramine (Tylenol PM and Benadryl) can cause confusion, blurred vision, constipation, urination problems, and dry mouth. Sometimes these side effects may be attributed to conditions commonly seen in older adults such as dementia and incontinence rather than to the antihistamine itself. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or paracetamol (Panadol) should

be limited to 3000 milligrams a day to prevent harm to the liver in older adults. Many cold and flu products and sleep aids contain acetaminophen, so the amount a person takes each day can easily add up. It’s always a good idea to review your prescription and over-the-counter medicines with your doctor or pharmacist.

Check Your Chakras Everything is energy, and when we have a lot of stress in our lives, our energy is low and our chakras become sluggish. From a physical perspective, you may go for a massage or facial, which is fine, but there is much more to our overall health. Fear of Falling?

Stairlift installed on a staircase with divided flights

Tinee Furbert, clinical consultant and occupational therapist at Medical House, provides tips for seniors to evaluate and prevent injuries

A

ccording to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three adults 65 years and older fall each year, and 80 percent of those falls occur in the bathroom. Of those who fall, 20 to 30 percent suffer moderate to severe injuries. Many falls are preventable

with the proper equipment and home setup.

Entryways Handrails along steps or a hallway and a well-lit entrance or walkway are helpful. Welcome mats or rugs can be pretty, but they can also be a hazard. Lever-style door

handles are a good option over rounded hand doorknobs. Place a stable chair inside the door, on which to take a break or remove shoes.

Floors If a home has carpet, watch for carpet strings, which may cause a tripping hazard. Wooden floors and tile can be slippery surfaces.

Stairs A stairlift can make stairs to the bedroom easily accessible.

Basic Maintenance Many falls occur due to an individual reaching for something; long-handled reachers or a sturdy step bench to get you closer to the item is a solution.

Electrical Do not run cords across hallways; tack them around the edge or up walls. Make sure hallways and doorways have adequate lighting and light switches that are easy to access.

Kitchen Because reaching for items can lead to falls, front controls on appliances are a safe 24

option. Kitchen counters should be the right height for daily tasks. Keep most used items in convenient areas to avoid too much lifting or carrying.

Bathroom Make sure there are ample gripping surfaces. Most falls in the bathroom are related to bathing, so make stepping into the tub extra safe. Bathmats must be nonslip – and grab bars are the best items to have throughout the bathroom. Bath benches, shower chairs, and raised toilet seats can also make your bathroom safer.

Monitoring There are many choices in motion-sensor devices, call bells, bed or chair pads, and alarms to detect movement. Alert or tracking devices are also available.

Communication It is important to discuss accessibility issues with the family. Many seniors don’t want to talk about the effects of aging or ask for help. It is important to emphasise that solutions will increase an aging parent’s safety, so the fear of falling is reduced. Health & Beauty 2018

Clients at the K. Margaret Carter Centre

The Government Department of Health celebrates the K. Margaret Carter Centre

T

he K. Margaret Carter Centre (KMCC) (formerly known as the Opportunity Workshop and Orange Valley programmes) is a governmentmanaged centre that provides training opportunities for adults with learning and physical disabilities. Its clients range in age from the early 20s to over 60, and it has clients across the disability spectrum. At KMCC, clients participate in activities such as gardening, art, yoga, cooking, crafts, and various onsite and offsite activities. Seniors participate in recreational activities with other clients. For example, before Good Friday, all clients went to the Devonshire Recreational Field to fly kites before

returning for a fish cake lunch. Many clients, including its seniors, produced baked goods, candy, and plants for the agricultural exhibition. Giving back to the community has also been a focus at KMCC. Some of its service users have volunteered in rest homes, helping to engage those residents in activities; further, seniors have been involved in tagging for one of the nursing homes with whom KMCC partners. These opportunities have provided a means for service users to enhance their communication, functional

and recreational skill sets. Socialising with other seniors is an important way to develop peer relationships and greater community integration. Older service users at KMCC have participated in craft classes at Admiralty House, island-wide socials, nursing home sports day events, and the CedarBridge Invitational Sport’s Day. Also, some seniors enjoy their involvement with the Golden Miler’s Club. KMCC recognises that there are still accessibility challenges within our community, further complicated by having an ageing population. According to the United Nations, a country is “aged” if more than 7% of a country’s population is 65 years of age or older. Bermuda has a very “aged” population of 20%. The World Health Organisation also says that, as the population ages and chronic health conditions escalate, there is an increase in disability rates. Ageing and disability issues affect everyone, and the Department of Health encourages all of us to do our part to embrace those who are vulnerable and help them stay fully integrated into the life of our community.

How to age well No matter what your age now, smart choices can slow the decline that comes along with aging

A

simple fact of life is that time will not be denied. It can, however, be influenced, and this is perhaps the best reason to stay fit as we age. Fitness allows us to continue enjoying activities that we benefit from. In Bermuda, a wide array of fitness options is available through local gyms, personal trainers, and community classes, offering everything from weight training and zumba dancing to Pilates and tai chi. As we get older, our fitness routines and goals tend to shift with a great focus on overall well-being. “When we are younger, the focus is often on aesthetics,” says Betty Doyling, a personal trainer who says the majority of her clients are over the age of 38. “As we get older exercise, becomes more a matter of functionality, staying safe and pain-free.”

Two-time Olympian Ruberry

Being able to kick a ball with your kids or grandkids, enjoy a skiing vacation, or learn a whole new sport or activity are important aspects of appreciating life in the later years. “My reality is not in a gym,” says Victor Ruberry, a two-time Olympic swimmer who runs Swim Fit Bermuda as a way of sharing his passion for the benefits of swimming. “My reality is outdoors, lobster diving, spearfishing, that type of thing. But I know I have to stay in shape to do those things.” Staying in shape as we age has a lot in common with staying in shape when we are younger, it’s just that the type and level of exercise we need changes. Muscle mass, flexibility, and bone density decrease, while recovery times, susceptibility to injury, and general aches and pains are on the rise. To adjust to this, fitness experts say that routines can be less gruelling, but Health & Beauty 2018

SENIORS commitment and ambition need to remain strong. “Exercise shouldn’t be punishment,” says Caitlin Curtis, a Level 3 Mat Pilates teacher who runs courses for the Life Long Learning Centre at the Bermuda College as well as private and group sessions. “I tell my clients to be kind to themselves, a little muscle fatigue is okay, but there is no need to overdo it. “I am honestly in better shape now than I was when I was 30. I’ve stopped doing things that were hurting me; I eat better, and I try all sorts of new things like surfing and most recently horseback riding.” As with any fitness regimen, it remains important to balance strength training with flexibility and cardiovascular exercise. Betty says, even for her older clients, training with weights is still important: “We lose muscle tone as we age, so I recommend working with weights at least two times a week. “I start with lighter weights, say three to five pounds, and people, if they workout regularly, get stronger quite quickly.” She also says that, while some soreness can be expected, people should be aware of sharp pains or pain that lasts more than three or four days. She also recommends working on flexibility through practices like yoga and Pilates as part of a regular programme. Adding to this, Caitlin says Pilates not

only helps with flexibility and strength, but many people also find it relaxing. “It is mindful movement,” she explains. “You are focused on moving your body correctly, so that takes your mind off of everything

else going on in your life. This focus also helps with coordination, so you get better at whatever other activities you enjoy.” Making sure there is variety in those activities is a common recommendation for people as they get older. “I’m a big proponent of doing things that make you happy,” Caitlin says. “At the same time, try not to get too specific. I know people who play a lot of golf or run all the time, and this can take a toll. Muscles work in pairs, so you could be using one set of muscles but at the expense of others.” Swimming is another exercise that uses all the muscles in the body. It also provides an excellent cardio workout while being low impact on the body. “Swimming is easy on the joints because you are suspended in the water,” says Victor. “You are also contracting your muscles in one motion and stretching them out with another motion, so you are using all your muscle groups in various ways.” More recently, the water is being used for exercise routines other than swimming laps. “Aqua-size” classes are offered locally, with the water providing both support of the body and resistance for strengthening. “It depends on your level of fitness and comfort with swimming,” says Victor. “When I grew up (in Somerset), we all used to go down to the bay in the evening for a swim. The kids would play in the water, the adults would socialise, then we would walk up the hill to go home. So the water is just a great outdoor activity.” For people who are looking to start exercising at a later age, fitness experts recognise a few common pitfalls and have recommendations to help navigate them. “Make a commitment, either by signing up for a class or paying for multiple sessions,” says Betty. “You have to stick with it to get the benefits and making that commitment will help.” Caitlin agrees, while also recognising that some people may feel self-conscious joining a group if they haven’t exercised in a while. “There are a couple of things people can do to help,” she says. “You can find a friend and go with them to a class. It is also important to start slowly, don’t try and do too much. There are all different levels of classes, if you join one that is at your level you’ll feel better about joining in.” And as for squeezing into a bathing suit for the first time in years? “It’s not a fashion show,” laughs Victor. “We’re too old for that. Plus everyone is too busy laughing and having a good time.” Health & Beauty 2018

SUGAR TAX

A tax that could save your life Bermuda joins a growing number of other countries as sugar taxes continue to gain momentum

B

y any country’s standards they are shocking figures – more than a third of Bermuda’s adults have diabetes and around three-quarters of men and women are obese or overweight. As a result, the costs are extraordinary. Last year alone spending on people with diabetes amounted to $77.8 million or 10 percent of Bermuda total health spending. So, it was against that backdrop that the government proposed the idea of a sugar tax in its Throne Speech – which sets out its legislative agenda – and embarked on consultation to gauge the public’s opinion. “We have an epidemic with respect to our population being either overweight or obese,” says Health Minister Kim Wilson. “The government is committed to addressing the high incidence of noncommunicable diseases, which are largely related to diet. So, we found that other jurisdictions have had success via the implementation of a sugar tax. “California and Mexico were two of the jurisdictions that we identified,” Wilson continues. “There was a decrease in the consumption of items that were affected by the sugar tax. I just read an article about Philadelphia, where, following the implementation of a sugar tax, they saw a remarkable decrease in the consumption of soda.” The consultation results showed support for a sugar tax, although it was not overwhelmingly conclusive: 52 percent were in favour, but a significant number – 44 percent – were against. Other findings showed • 100-percent fruit juice should not be 32

included at this time: 63 percent agreed, and 29 percent disagreed; • Milk-based items should not be included at this time: 51 percent agreed, and 37 percent disagreed; • Dilutables should be taxed: 47 percent agreed, and 38 percent opposed; • Candy should be taxed: 60 percent agreed, and 31 percent opposed. The level of taxation is still being debated, but 43 percent of people who responded to the consultation said they would support a levy of 75 percent or higher. Indeed, the consultation question talked about a tax of as much as 150 percent. What goods will be included are also

to be finalised, although the consultation document listed a raft of items such as sugar in solid forms, not syrups or other liquids, but including brown sugar, white sugar, powdered sugar, and icing sugar. Marshmallows, yogurt-covered raisins, caramel candy, fondant, nougat, white chocolate, dilutables, crystals/powders, and flavoured-sugar syrups, sodas, energy drinks, fruit juices with added sugar, and sweetened teas were also included in the consultation document. “A high percentage of individuals were saying ‘let’s add more things,’ so, in addition to saying having a sugar tax, they were looking at other items. There’s a consensus out there to grow it and to add

a number of other items that are deemed as unhealthy. There’s an appetite, for want of a better word,” the minister says, laughing. Asked whether other similar taxes could be added, the minister adds: “At the end of the day we’ve spent an enormous amount on health care and it’s unsustainable. And, again, going back to the issue of our obesity and our terrible statistics, if this is an avenue that can be utilised, where it’s been found successful in other jurisdictions to reduce the intake of these types of items, then we have to try it.” There has been opposition to the

sugar tax from some wholesalers, and Bruce Barritt, general manager at John Barritt & Son Ltd, says the tax has been presented as a health initiative to combat obesity and is designed to increase the retail prices for a select group of food and beverage items in the hope of altering purchase and consumption patterns. He says, “This selective tax ignores the fact that a balanced diet and physical activity are needed for good health, and that all calories count no matter what food or beverage they come from. There are also glaring omissions in the list of foods and beverages that could be taxed. Why not include imported cookies, cakes, pies, and ice cream?” In response, the minister says that some of the revenue from the tax will go toward supporting new health initiatives, as prevention is far cheaper than a cure. “We want to encourage Bermudians to live healthy lifestyles and to consume alternative things such as water. “We are looking forward to being able to utilise some of the funds raised to

health initiatives, although we are still working through the dynamics of that. We recognise that it’s important to try to address the issues of healthy lifestyles with our children, so that not only can they begin to make healthy lifestyle choices, they can also go home and teach that to their parents. “We have programmes going on within the ministry, and we’re going to continue to devote time and resources to those programmes. Unfortunately, many of us in Bermuda still live a sedentary lifestyle. We’re encouraging businesses to perhaps sell things that are healthier, that have less sugar content, to use alternatives.” Asked if the idea at the end of the day was to take sugary drinks off the shelves and replace them with something healthy, the minister says simply: “Yes.”

From Health & Beauty magazine

R

Why the government is right to declare war on sugary drinks and obesity

ight across the island, in the newspapers, on the radio, social media, and even on the back of our pink buses, you’ll find advertisements, posters, point-of-sale promotions, storefront signs, and sidewalk sandwich boards encouraging us to eat and drink. The advertising is sometimes cute, clever or humorous, and always tempting. But what’s being promoted is almost never good – fried chicken, donuts, frozen yogurt, pizza, burger, and fries. Walk into any supermarket or gas station, and you’ll see price-off promotions for soda drinks, the bigger the size, the more you’ll save. We even had a Hamilton fast food restaurant promote its business by holding an eating contest with children competing to see how many pounds of fries they could eat in five minutes. It’s like the food industry in Bermuda is urging us to eat and drink as much as we possibly can. Unfortunately, as consumers, we are the biggest losers, as it has become increasingly difficult to find healthy, nutritional meals, especially from takeouts. When was the last time you saw an advertisement or price promotion for spinach, broccoli, or carrots? In Bermuda, seven out of 10 people in our community are overweight, and one in three are obese. Officially, 13% of the population is reported to have diabetes, but experts say that number is likely to be much higher – closer to 25%. We have become an island limping toward an epidemic of amputations and other medical complications from diabetes and disorders caused by chronic diseases such as cancer, strokes, and heart attacks. If things don’t change, our health system will collapse under the costs of treating a population that is growing more and more unhealthy.

34

But it seems that collectively our restaurants, wholesalers, and retailers cannot, or chose not to, see the correlation between the unhealthy food products they are marketing and the damage being done to the health of our community. And it’s because of this lack of social responsibility within the food industry that the government is stepping in with the introduction of a sugar tax. Because if something isn’t done about the health of our nation now, we’ll have a much larger problem on our hands down the road. A major soda importer is asking “Why us? Why not tax everything that has sugar in it, such as cookies and ice cream?” The answer is that you have to start somewhere, and eliminating these sugary beverages from your diet is a great way to start if you want to improve your health. “That Coke or Tradewinds ice tea that you’re drinking is pure sugar,” says Kim Wilson, Minister of Health. “You might as well just open up a sugar container and

dump it down your mouth. If you were getting ready to drink a can of Coca-Cola, and someone put nine teaspoons of sugar in front of you and said that’s what you’re drinking, I bet you would think twice before drinking it.” Sugary drinks provide no nutritional value whatsoever, and evidence suggests that our brains don’t react to drinking a soda by letting us know we feel “full” – as it does with most foods. So we are tempted to drink more and more. Dr. Annabel Fountain, formerly of Chronic Disease Management Services at the Bermuda Hospitals Board and now Medical Director at Fountain Medical Group LLC, says, “You can consume so many more calories than you need a day if you drink your calories, and there are so many different ways that sugar is bad for our bodies.” Yes, what you put in your mouth is a personal choice, and many argue that we each have to take 100% responsibility for our own diets and health. But with Health & Beauty 2018

70% of us in Bermuda being overweight, clearly something is fundamentally wrong with our culture in regards to food. And continuing with the present status quo is not an option given the financial realities of rising health insurance premiums and the hundreds of millions of dollars we are spending on health care. The Bermuda Health Council says, “A cultural and policy shift is needed to cut unsustainable healthcare costs,” as it recently reported that the healthcare system had reached “breaking point” with spending of more than $700 million per year. We spend $11,362 per year on health care for every man, woman, and child on the island. This is a problem we all have to face, and if the businesses that are eagerly pushing these unhealthy choices at us will not take heed, then who will? The government could widen the taxes not just on products with high sugar content but also on chips, pizza, French fries, and other junk foods. It could also seek to curb advertising of junk foods and sodas similar to the ban on tobacco advertising. Especially important would be restricting advertising to children. Another important initiative would be to get local doctors and other health practitioners to persuade their patients on the importance of eating healthily and to provide practical diet advice. After all, prevention is always better than the cure. But people power could be the strongest force for change, and you could vote with your wallet – or shopping trolley. There’s an axiom in business that nothing brings change faster than red numbers on the bottom line. By avoiding those establishments that sell junk foods, by not buying that soda, donut, or pizza, you will be encouraging businesses to adapt and evolve, to do their part in tackling the growing obesity crisis, to curb the consumption of unhealthy food items, and to offer and promote healthier alternatives. The high rate of obesity we see in Bermuda was not caused only by sugary drinks, of course. It’s the result of our culture and environment, which seems to encourage and embrace unhealthy food. And we can’t tax ourselves out of this problem. Let’s hope that the sugar tax is just the beginning of a policy and cultural shift aimed at changing the way we eat and drink. 35

ou’re seated at a restaurant, and a person at the table next to you starts choking. Will you be able to spring into action and help save his or her life? Emergencies happen all the time in Bermuda, and it often takes first responders many minutes before they can arrive on the scene to help. In most cases, a public citizen is already there and can provide valuable assistance before an ambulance, or an EMT vehicle shows up – if they have appropriate training. “An accident can happen in the blink of an eye,” says Veronica DeSilva, training officer for St. John Ambulance. “So you’ve got to be ready; you’ve got to have the

training.” She says that around 99% of the time, medical emergencies happen in the home during day-to-day activities or family gatherings. “Knowing a few medical life-saving skills can prevent a situation from becoming a disaster or tragedy,” says DeSilva. “At St. John Ambulance, we also teach accident prevention in the home. It helps make people aware that accidents happen, and often it’s not a stranger you’re coming to assist but someone in your own family.” She says that many people want these life-saving skills to be prepared. Others take the course as part of a job Health & Beauty 2018

EMERGENCY requirement. “You need to have CPR; you need to have first aid. Why? Someone could be standing next to you, and in a blink of an eye they collapse. I’ve had people tell me after taking the course how they used the skills they learned to help people at their work and to help their own family. Some have helped choking diners at restaurants. Others were able to perform CPR and sustain life, and prevent possible death, on heart attack victims until first responders arrived.” Bermuda is one of 40 countries in which St. John Ambulance is registered to operate. It is a nonprofit organisation that relies on volunteer support. About 95% of the budget that allows St. John Ambulance to operate locally is raised from the Bermuda community. In 2017, St. John Ambulance attended more than 250 community events. It is there to provide medical help at Cup Match, Bermuda Day activities, motor sports races, bicycle races, rugby matches, concerts, and many other events. Jeffery Borges, deputy commissioner for St. John Ambulance, says that those are the typical events at which it has a presence. “Bermuda Day and Cup Match are extremely busy times for us – especially with runners in the Bermuda Day half marathon, if it’s hot and humid

Health & Beauty 2018

and the athletes don’t hydrate properly. “During Cup Match, we run into the same sort of things – dehydration, alcohol poisoning, or intoxication. People are drinking too much and not hydrating themselves.” Mr. Borges says he would encourage everyone to do at least some basic first aid and CPR training. “The benefit is so that you know what to do or at least have some idea what you can do before more experienced help arrives. For example, if someone is bleeding, you will learn through the first aid course to apply

pressure to the wound. Without training, some people see blood and go ‘Oh no, what do I do here?’ but, with training, you will know what to do until help arrives. “Likewise, if someone passes out or has a heart attack, doing proper compressions can help save that person’s life. Being trained gives people the confidence to know what to do if something happens, and it can literally be life-saving.” To learn more about St. John Ambulance, to become a volunteer, or take one of its courses, visit www.sjabermuda.org
