FROM THE PREMIER

A good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity – it is a prerequisite Bermuda is brighter because our island is blessed to have smart, talented, and socially and community-minded future leaders like you

I was speaking with one of our senior citizens recently and having a good laugh at the changes that have taken place in Bermuda – from horse and buggy to now electric Twizy cars moving around the Island. Things have changed – and not just in the area of transportation. In the workplace, the demands for a skilled and trained workforce are rapidly transitioning around the world. Bermuda, like many other countries, has the opportunity to take the lead in new business and commercial ventures by ensuring that our students are equipped and ready to meet and even surpass the expected global standard. I am reminded of a quote by US President Barak Obama, who stated, “In a global economy where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity – it is a prerequisite.” This government understands the importance of a good education coupled with experience. Our commitment is to build a better and fairer Bermuda by putting Bermudians first and ensuring that public education is our top priority. We understand that a solid education and a supportive community are the keys for you to succeed as tomorrow’s leaders. Whatever you decide for your career, it is our intent to assist you in achieving your goals. Throughout our schools, students have many opportunities to advance and excel. I encourage you to take advantage of what is being offered in class, after school, and through volunteer service. By getting involved, studying, and assisting with community service, you will develop skills, knowledge, and education that will provide a solid foundation for you now and in the future. Don’t let opportunities pass you by, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. A large part of getting a good education is being willing to ask questions, think critically, and, when in doubt, seek guidance. We believe in you. Indeed, the future of Bermuda is brighter because our island is blessed to have smart, talented, and socially and community-minded future leaders like you. Wherever your career leads you, we hope that the path will bring you back to our beloved island so you can help Bermuda to succeed in these ever-changing times. The Hon. E. David Burt, JP. MP Premier

FROM THE MINISTER

Experience is the best teacher I encourage you to take advantage of new experiences when they are presented to you

8

The great Roman leader Julius Caesar recorded the earliest known version of the proverb, “Experience is the teacher of all things.” This is an old quote, but it remains timeless and relevant even today. Experiences enable us to determine what is favourable or unfavourable in our lives. We learn what is significant to us and how we can improve or change certain outcomes. As a student, I encourage you to take advantage of new experiences when they are presented to you. Recently, I read an article about Khaleel Daley, one of the winners of the Bermuda Hospital Auxiliary of Bermuda Proficiency award. Khaleel is a candy striper and one of only a few young men who volunteer in the programme. He says people are often surprised when they find out he is a volunteer, but he has been singled out for being a good role model for other candy stripers. He started volunteering because he was interested in medicine, and now he is enrolled in the dual enrollment programme at Bermuda College, undertaking college-level courses, while completing his high school diploma at the Berkeley Institute. Speaking of his volunteer experience, Khaleel says that volunteering helped him to decide what future career path he would pursue. Khaleel now realises that his educational pursuit has steered a career path for him in actuarial science – and this experience he does not regret. He says, “It’s a rewarding experience. I would recommend it, especially if you are interested in medicine.” Khaleel’s experience, as with all our experiences in life, serves as a guidepost and teachable moment for us to make choices. Without a doubt, our experiences are the best teachers. Like many Berkeley Institute and Cedarbridge Academy students, Khaleel is enrolled in the Department of Education and the Bermuda College dualenrollment programme for senior school students. It’s a challenging and demanding academic programme, but students in the end always reflect back on their study experiences and recognise how much they have been taught and learnt to position them for greater opportunities. If you are interested in the dual enrollment (associates degree) and certificate of applied technology programs at Bermuda College, I encourage you to speak with your school guidance counsellors. Don’t forget that “experience is the best teacher.” My hope is that this year is a successful and productive one for each of you. The Hon. Diallo V. Rabain, JP, MP Minister of Education and Workforce Development

HOSPITALITY Maya Richardson, Hamilton Princess & Beach Club colleague of the year, 2017

Never a dull

moment for Maya Meet the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club concierge selected as colleague of the year ut of more than 400 talented employees at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, one was first among equals – Maya Richardson, who was selected as colleague of the year in 2017. Maya is a concierge at this stunning, newly renovated urban resort and says her day is all about talking with people and working with local product and service providers to enhance the guest experience. “I do talk to a lot people every day, all day, about a variety of different things, or sometimes I might

O

Your Future 2018

have the same question asked three times in a row. So patience is key, and definitely I have to multitask,” she says. But, above all, Maya keeps this important philosophy in mind: “I try to make each person feel like an individual. When I’m talking to someone, I hope to make them feel as if they’re the most important person I am talking to that day. And I try to replicate that experience throughout the entire day. “I’m responsible for everything the guest asks for – from booking dinners

to arranging jet skis and boat rentals. When there’s a guest who’s celebrating a birthday, one of his or her family members might want to have balloons and a cake, and I will order the cake and pick up the balloons and sneak them into the hotel so that the birthday guest doesn’t see them. I get all sorts of requests and every day is different.” Maya strives to go above and beyond for every guest every time. “I really, really try to make each person’s stay memorable,” she says, “showing them that I am genuinely interested in their life and making their vacation special.” Surprisingly, for someone who seems a natural for the hospitality industry, Maya’s first career choice was to become a veterinarian. “I was homeschooled in Bermuda, then I did a semester at a community college, followed by a semester at the University of Montana. I was pursuing biology, with the goal of becoming a vet,” she explains. “But after my first semester, I decided I didn’t want to study biology anymore. I felt I wanted to shift gears and do something different. I returned to Bermuda, where a friend showed me the job opening at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. Becoming a concierge wasn’t something I had thought about, but when I went for the job interview, I felt really good about the work environment, and everyone I met was so friendly and welcoming. I just thought this could be a really, really good opportunity for me. My application was successful, and I started work here early in 2017.” When Maya first joined the hotel, the multimillion-dollar renovation was just being completed. Now Maya says the “Pink Palace” is an incredible environment in which to work. “It’s absolutely gorgeous with all of the original art pieces.” “Another reason I like working here is they do really, really try and give you a foot up when it comes to promotions. If you want to move into a different department, they’re really good about training and helping you reach those next steps. I am so glad to have been given this incredible opportunity.” 11

This spring, the nonprofit is introducing a new pilot programme for S2 students, which will provide an

Cartwright explains. “The curriculum for this new programme is awesome — we are really excited about offering this.” “We are trying to change the perspective of what people think of the hospitality industry, to help people understand the diversity available within the sector,” says Mrs. Cartwright. “Yes, it’s the visible roles like housekeeping, front desk, and food and beverage services, but there is a lot more. There are opportunities in engineering, accounting, sales and marketing, and so many other areas. No matter where your interests or passions lie, chances are you can use that to enhance the Island’s tourism industry.” For more information or to book an appointment with the BHI, call 295-5049.

HEALTHCARE

Investing in mental health Thanks to the BHB and BHCT, two mental health nurses are being helped to achieve their potential he Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) is responding to the growing need for mental health nursing on the Island with the addition of two new scholarships specifically geared to this profession. “BHB wants to encourage both young and mature Bermudian students interested in mental health nursing to pursue careers in this field,” says Kendra-Lee Pearman, BHB human resources senior advisor. As specialty training requires individuals to complete a bachelor of nursing overseas, it can be financially challenging. BHB collaborated with its charity arm – The Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust (BHCT) – to develop the awards and encourage local candidates into the area. “We were pleased to be able to assist and provide these scholarships,” says BHCT spokeswoman Lisa Sheppard. “It’s an important investment not only in educating Bermudians, but it also helps ensure that we as a community are suitably qualified to care for those of us with mental illness well into the future.” Two scholarships of $40,000 each are available annually to qualified Bermudian graduates of the Bermuda College Nursing Programme. The candidates will be enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Mental Health Nursing Programme at Northampton University in the United Kingdom. The course is two years long and has two 12-week clinical placements each year. Students must complete 2,500 hours of theory and 2,500 hours of practical experience by the end of the two years. At the end of the programme, the students will hold an RN – Mental Health designation.

healthcare and customer service. The Nursing Programme at Bermuda College was the right fit for her, and in May she graduated with an associate’s degree in nursing. Janai is currently a community support worker for Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI). Working with the learning disabled in group homes, she said she enjoys her job. “My real interest is working with persons requiring psychiatric support,” she says. “Anyone who knows me will tell you this.” Given her passion, she said she cried with excitement when she learned she was awarded the scholarship. “I’m looking forward to March (when the Northampton course starts) and anxious for the opportunity ahead of me. Some of my learning disability clients also have psychosis. I’m keen to see how the UK manages such cases – which of their practices are similar to ours at MWI and what things are done differently.” Building on her qualifications, Janai has also applied to sit the US board exams (NCLEX) in New York state to obtain her nursing licensure. “It’s a lengthy process, but I’m eager to do it,” she adds. “I’m truly grateful to BHB and BHCT for the scholarship, which is allowing me to pursue my dream.”

Waleed Lightbourne

Thirty-five-year-old Waleed Lightbourne also received a mental health scholarship and says he is “elated” with the achievement. A 2015 graduate of the Bermuda College nursing programme, Waleed is currently in BHB’s nursing intern programme. He works on Ascendant Partner Re Ward in the Acute Care Wing at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He also works as a security guard at MWI. “Although I’m not at MWI in a clinical role, I have gained understanding about mental illness and know this is the area I want to focus my attention on,” he says. Keen to break down the stigma of mental illness and to help educate not only patients but families and the wider community about mental health, Waleed says he’s eager to start the programme at Northampton. He says that getting the scholarship has enabled him to pursue his goal in a way he would not have been able to otherwise afford. “The Northampton programme is known to be one of the best mental health programs in the UK,” says Waleed. “With the support of BHB and the BHCT I will be able to provide the standard of care that is necessary and required for Bermuda’s mental health population.” Your Future 2018

Create your future with an apprenticeship An apprenticeship provides real experience, real qualifications, and real job prospects any local employers are willing to train Bermudians and give them valuable experience through apprenticeship programmes, which benefits young Bermudians looking to gain a foothold in a career as well as local businesses. A spokesperson for the Department of Workforce Development stresses, “Classroom learning does not fully simulate the reality of the workplace. Apprenticeships and other hands-on post-secondary programmes serve the industry by providing an optimum balance between theory and hands-on experience. Some traditional

M

classroom programmes often fail to teach the specific skills and techniques required for the job. Employers can provide about 90% of apprenticeship training in the workplace. This is complemented with classroom instruction on the theory. This combination of training creates a highly skilled workforce tailored to the needs of Bermuda’s economy.” Like the rest of the world, Bermuda is faced with an ageing Baby Boomer population, which is preparing to retire over the next five to 10 years. The Workforce Development spokesperson says, “It is estimated that a large

percentage of current tradespeople will need to be replaced. This is expected to create many opportunities for young people to enter the trades. Unlike some other careers, job security and earning potential are relatively high in skilled trades and technology fields. Skilled trade workers are in high demand in Bermuda’s ever-changing workforce. With rising tuition in colleges and universities, the concept of hands-on learning and ‘earning while learning’ is very attractive to many young Bermudians.” AIRCARE knows firsthand the need to get young Bermudians into the HVACR (heating, ventilation, airconditioning, refrigeration) field. A spokesperson for the company says, “Our industry is challenged by it. There is a lack of suitably qualified technicians who are Bermudian.” The spokesperson also says the sales and administration side of the

On becoming a headmaster Ciara Muat knows she would not be the stylist she is today without the help of an apprenticeship programme. Ciara works at Salon Pink, which prides itself as being an educational and training salon. “I’ve learned the ins-and-outs of how things are done behind the scenes at Salon Pink,” she says, “and that has helped me develop a greater understanding for all of the work that goes into making a hairdressing salon so successful.” Ciara undertook a hairdressing programme overseas before returning to Bermuda and was then immediately accepted by Salon Pink. She began as an assistant, being trained by the owner, Kidist “Pinky” Emery. “Having Pinky do the training means a lot to me,” says Ciara, “because she is taking time out of her busy schedule to help me develop as a hairdresser. I liked that she takes the extra time to mentor me. She spends extra time helping me with the styles I don’t feel comfortable with and teaches me new techniques and colour formulas.” Ciara says that one of the most important lessons she has learned through the hands-on training is to be patient. “Not every client is going to be nice to their stylist, and not everyone is going to like how I do something, so I have to be patient through the process. I feel as though I am growing as a person, as I move from starting as an apprentice to being on the floor cutting and styling.”

One is in the fire prevention division, one in building control, and one in HVAC. “For whatever reason, there is a lack of awareness that there is a viable career path in Bermuda to go into this kind of work. We believe that there may be a marketing issue, which is why in the last year AIRCARE has been increasingly vocal and proactive about raising the profile of this issue.” She says the company has spread the word

through traditional media such as The Royal Gazette as well as Hamilton Rotary speeches and has also used social media, including Facebook and vlogs featuring the young people themselves. Another industry that suffers from a shortage of Bermudians is hairdressing. “There are not enough qualified Bermudians to fill these roles. There are two certification programmes that are offered, but for whatever reason, we don’t get the uptake,” says a spokesperson for the Bermuda College. Salon Pink owner Kidist “Pinky” Emery is a firm believer that the apprentice system offers benefits to everyone involved. This was a part of her guiding philosophy when she first opened her salon in 2011. “A lot of our girls go overseas for education, but when they come back, they can’t get jobs because they don’t have any experience. I felt that an apprenticeship programme was something that Bermuda needed to help them get this experience.”

Since 2011, Pinky has taken on six apprentices. She has worked with the National Training Board to help secure funding for a two of her stylists to go overseas for additional education opportunities. “We had two girls eligible for funding. The first girl received $5,000, and she went on a nine-month course at a traditional college, and the second set of funding was for up to $10,000.” She adds that having an apprentice system is helpful because “We get to be part of the solution as opposed to moaning about the problem all the time. Another advantage is that you build integrity and loyalty into these young people. It is also nice for them to be a part of a place that recognises growth as opposed to a place that is concerned about dollars and cents.” Pinky says the clients benefit as well as getting to see the growth in the stylists from shampooing their hair to watching them blossom and show their creativity behind the chair.

Just the ticket Sometimes getting hired in your chosen field is not as simple as going away to school then coming back to Bermuda and finding a job immediately. Former National Team cricketer Damali Bell found this out firsthand. He graduated with a degree in marine mechanics, but when he came back to Bermuda at age 22, he wasn’t able to find employment straight away. Damali says, “In the beginning, it was very frustrating because I was hoping to put my skills to use. In the meantime, I had to go get a job as a park ranger until I got a position as a mechanic.” “I applied to the public bus garage and was turned down twice,” he says. “But my persistence paid off, and eventually they hired me as an apprentice.” The Department of Transportation, who operates the public buses, then sent him to England for two years for additional training. “I appreciated the opportunity to go away to school while still being paid. It gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity to work in a garage in England at a MAN dealership — MAN because it is the brand of buses used in Bermuda. The experience I gained working in that field was vital and helped me become a better mechanic.” 22

TECHNOLOGY

Life as a First-Year Cybersecurity Student Caroline Caton, an intern at the Department of ICT Policy & Innovation shares some valuable advice on transitioning from high school to college. hey say that the first year of university is always the hardest, and I agree. It took me a while to get used to a new school, environment, and course load, but soon enough, I realised some simple truths that have made my university life richer and more fulfilling. Here are my tips to help make that first year just a little easier.

T

Study outside of the classroom Keep yourself up to date with new developments in the technology and security sphere, such as data breaches, crypto currency, and devices. Read news articles or books by subjectmatter experts and listen to podcasts.

Some professors like to relate the course content to current issues, so this will give you a leg up. Practice coding languages Depending on your study programme, you may or may not be expected to have coding experience. The more languages you know, the better. At the very least, develop basic skills in Python, JavaScript, and HTML and use online resources like Khan Academy, Coursera, and even YouTube. Learn from other subjects If possible, take some business courses as electives if they aren’t already built into your study programme.

Using Technology at Work

It s not a problem until it becomes a problem. We now have easy access to the Internet and Social Media: it s all at our fingertips!

Understanding how business works makes joining the workforce a lot easier, as you will have the skills and the knowledge to transition smoothly. Embrace group projects Even though working in groups can be challenging, it’s a fact of life – especially in IT. It’s not always idyllic, but it can prove to be helpful: remember people have different abilities; you just have to figure out how to best utilise everyone’s strengths. If you know how to effectively work in a group, life at university and building a career afterward will both become easier.

ACCOUNTANCY

A career in accounting just adds up! If you’re looking to enter the world of business or finance, the CPA professional accounting credential will open doors and enhance your prospects. hartered Professional Accountants Bermuda has helped many young Bermudians earn the important CPA designation and go on to well-paying careers. Their skills as CPAs have led them to become CEOs, board members, management consultants, and more. Bermuda’s public accounting firms are supportive of staff who are training to be accountants. In addition to onthe-job training, they send students overseas to take courses, give them time off to prepare for and take exams, and provide each student with a mentor. Annarita Marion, president and chief executive officer of CPA Bermuda, says “Some students think that to become an accountant you have to have a business degree or a maths degree, but in fact you do not. You just need to have the interest and a good degree, and then you work with a company, and the company will work with you to help you get the qualifications. Some young people know from an early age that they

want to become an accountant and so follow a course of studies accordingly. But it doesn’t always work like that.” “I went into accounting blind, really,” says Ian Bucci, a new CPA. “I went to university to study engineering, and then when that didn't work out, I fell into business. I just tried different things that I found were easier for me to study, and accounting turned out to be one of them. Then, after university, actually pursuing this designation, it no longer became something that was just intuitive. It was something I really had to work for, so it didn’t turn out quite so easy for me after all, but the journey was worth it.” Nicole Davis’ father and sister were both accountants, but she didn’t want to follow in their footsteps. “I had a marketing internship for a few years, and then suddenly the marketing internship was cut due to funding. I was in my second year at St. Francis Xavier University at the time, and I stood back and reflected on whether marketing

would offer me future job stability. I felt accounting would provide a more fixed career path, so I went on to get a bachelor in business with a major in accounting. From there I went into the CPA programme with EY.” Courtney Fisher says that she had no real interest in accounting until she started taking first-year courses in university. “I graduated from Warwick Academy and went to the University of Guelph in Ontario. I was taking a commerce programme and found that

the accounting courses were the ones I enjoyed the most, so I decided to specialise in accounting.” On the other hand, Sierra Petty knew that she wanted to become an accountant while she was still finishing high school at Mount St. Agnes. “I went to Dalhousie in Nova Scotia where I did a management degree with a focus in accounting,” she says. “I always knew that’s what I wanted to do.” “At Dalhousie, I was doing really well in the beginning accounting classes I

was taking as part of my management degree,” says another recent CPA graduate, Chelsea Soares. “I said to myself, ‘I’m really good at this, and I should become a CPA,’ but then it got a lot harder. It was a challenge to earn the CPA credentials, but I am so glad I followed this path.” Another student who went to Canada to study business is Milton Stephens. “I went to Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, where I was doing a degree in business administration,” he says. “When you’re there, you do a little bit of everything, and then in your third year, you pick a specialised course, and I chose accounting.” Nicole Nelson went to the University of The West in the UK to study business management and economics. Like Chelsea, she found she enjoyed and was good at the entry-level accounting courses she had to take as part of the degree course. “It just seemed like a natural progression to follow a career into accounting,” she says. Although you don’t have to work with a public accounting firm to study toward

becoming a CPA (many private companies, as well as government also support students following this career path), all of the students we talked with were recruited by one of the “big four” — Deloitte, EY, KMPG, and PWC. Nicole Nelson started as an intern in the compliance department at KPMG. Milton did a summer internship programme with Deloitte and was then hired full-time; Chelsea was recruited by Deloitte during a campus visit its HR staff made to Halifax. She says, “I feel like all the firms are really interested in Bermuda students who are interested in accounting. So there’s a lot options out there.” A typical working day for these new accountants is varied. Much of their time is spent working in the offices of their firm’s clients, and the future offers all sorts of possibilities. For Nicole Nelson, that means a move to London. “I am moving to London with my firm shortly, and I will work there for one or two years. With that international experience, it will help me progress within the firm to a higher management 25

ACCOUNTANCY position.” Milton says he plans to stay with Deloitte for several years but eventually plans to branch out into industry. “I like the job mobility a CPA provides,” he says. One of the benefits of gaining the CPA is that it offers so many possibilities, and it’s not always necessary to plan a fixed career path because so many new opportunities will arise along the way. “I don’t know where I see myself in five years,” says Chelsea. “I remember that a few years ago a friend of mine had just got his CPA, and he’s like, “I don’t know what to do with it.” And I was like, “What do you mean? You just got qualified. What do you mean you don’t know what to do with it?” Now that I’m in that position I also feel the same way. So, I know what I don’t want to do, and I do know that I have lots of options to consider. When I first started, I didn’t realise how global audit firms are. The world’s your oyster. I know that sounds cliché, but it’s true.” Sierra stresses the same point: “I feel I have tremendous job security and stability. I am enjoying what I am doing now, and I know that lots of doors will open for me in the future.” Nicole Davis agrees: “It’s going to be super easy to always get a job anywhere. Accountants are always in demand.” Ian Bucci says, “One of the best things about being in public accounting is that you’re almost guaranteed to progress through your career a lot quicker than you may in any industry job. Promotions are pretty much guaranteed every few years or so. You

might not get that somewhere else. Another thing that I really benefit from in public accounting is it really develops your interpersonal skills. You’re on a team of people that you have to see all day, everyday. If you don’t like them, you have to deal with it. And it’s not only dealing with your team, it’s also dealing with the clients. There’s a lot of client interaction. It really develops your interpersonal skills.” Another attraction for these young Bermudians is the social aspect of working in the accounting field. “The majority of the people in the office are around my age,” says Milton. “So, it’s not like being in an office with a bunch of people in their 40s or 50s. Everyone is mid- to late 20s. We play volleyball, soccer, we have a golf day – there’s a social committee that organises lots of fun activities outside the office.” So, what advice do these newly qualified accountants give to other young people who may be considering a similar career? “I would suggest that if they are dedicated to work hard, and they aren’t sure what they wanted to do, then the accountant route is a good one,” says Nicole Davis. “Not just anyone can do it, though. Courtney and I started together with a group of 10 other students, and we’re the only two that went the whole course. Some of them failed exams and dropped out. Others didn’t even get past the first four weeks. So you do have to be dedicated. Not everyone can do it. It’s not easy. It’s really difficult. It’s a lot of hours. It’s a lot of study. But the benefits and well worth it.”

Milton agrees. “Be ready to work hard, you’ll see some long nights. You’ve got to make some sacrifices, but in the end it will be worth it.” “I was studying in the summers for six straight years,” says Chelsea. “Three years while at college and three years after I graduated. These were summer courses that I had to take to get the credit in order to qualify to start the CPA program. So it’s a big commitment. It’s a rewarding career. But I would make it clear that you have to be dedicated. There was a saying in my university, ‘There’s three things to do, but you can only ever have two: social life, study hard, and sleep.’ Well, to get your CPA you have to add a fourth, and that is work really hard for your firm. It’s difficult to balance all of them.” Ian concurred, “It was very challenging, trying to juggle various things. You’re constantly wondering whether you’re actually going to have a life – you’re always working or studying. But from where I’m standing now, I’m always going to say it was worth it because I finally passed the CPA exams.” “Sometimes accounting has a negative connotation about it,” says Nicole Davis. “People just think you’re a number-cruncher. It’s so, so, so much more than that. I think that it is a very solid career path. If you have the motivation, it’s not impossible to pass the CPA exams. The world will always need accountants, and I think Bermuda always needs accountants, and it opens up so many doors and provides opportunities that you might not even think possible for you.”

began full-time employment with EY in 2014 after graduating from St. Francis Xavier University in Canada. “I started studying for the CPA (chartered professional accountant) about three months into my career at EY,” says Nicole. “That included working the long hours auditors do, as well as studying and getting assignments completed on time. It was definitely challenging, and I just put my mind to it and kept going.” Now that Nicole is qualified, there are many options available to her. “Some newly qualified CPAs choose to leave public accounting, and there are many opportunities for them,” she says. “Others look to transfer within EY to one of its offices abroad. Others choose, as I have done, to pursue a career with EY in Bermuda. I’m in the insurance sector, and I get to see so many different aspects of insurance, from small captives to big public

insurance companies; my work gives me a lot of exposure and experience in the industry. With an audit, you see everything from top to bottom, left to right.” “Another thing I really like about EY is that I am working with people from all over the world. I am dealing with EY offices in London, Australia, throughout the United States, the list goes on. I talk to our New York office constantly; they are part of our team. I am gaining valuable international experience. Plus, at EY the social aspect of working here is great. The average age is very young, and everyone is on the same wavelength. You make a lot of good friends.” After attending Francis Patton Primary School, Clearwater Middle School, and The Berkeley Institute, Terrin Smith won a football and academic scholarship to attend The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut. From there, he went to Stetson University to study computer science. In his second year at university, he changed his major to accounting. “I found that the IT courses required a lot of coding knowledge. Coding wasn’t a module I enjoyed, so I decided to study something else that was just as challenging, that I could excel in, which was accounting,” explains Terrin. “I joined EY in 2013 as an intern and was working with the firm during my Christmas and summer breaks from university. That same year, EY gave me a three-year, $30,000 scholarship to help with my college fees. After I received the scholarship and completed the first few internship periods, EY offered me the opportunity to continue to work for them until I graduated and started fulltime in May 2016.” “EY has done so much for me. I plan on staying for a long time and hope to progress through the ranks. I enjoy working here mainly because of the people and the culture within the firm. Everyone that I have met has been kind and helpful whenever I have any questions or simply just need advice. My colleagues and my engagement team provide great support and guidance. That has helped me grow as an individual, as I strive to excel in everything I do.” 27

and commitment are the key skill sets a person needs to develop to help build his or her career. “It’s important to learn the small things, even outside of your job description, as they will one day be important when you are seeing the bigger picture. You will be given numerous opportunities, but the onus is on you to make the most of the opportunities.” “There are plenty of opportunities for young Bermudians,” she adds. “They may not be flashy, but they are there. So take advantage of every opportunity given to you: Find good mentors, travel to the overseas office, observe those you work with and for in different situations, take professional development courses, and work toward a professional designation.” Richard advises young Bermudians to obtain a position within a company that offers exposure to various industries or business functions. “This allows the individual to gain exposure to numerous roles,” he says, “which could change their career path, while remaining with the employer. Being able to build relationships is key as you proceed through your career.” Richard says that if he had one piece of advice for young professionals, it would be this: “Set your personal targets and continually assess and adjust throughout your career, as your personal goals will change as life progresses. Phillip: There have been challenges; however, I never became overwhelmed. This is due to working on such a diverse client base while in Bermuda. The experience equipped me with a broad skill set and the confidence to bring innovative ideas to my teams in Boston. What have you been most proud of since you joined the PwC firm? INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Is a career in insurance right for you? Bermuda is home to one of the largest and most important international insurance and reinsurance centers in the world, providing many challenging and rewarding career opportunities. Here are three good reasons why a career in insurance might be right for you. It makes a difference and delivers social good Everyone knows insurance provides financial coverage after injury or loss. But, on another level, it’s more. In fact, the world would be unimaginable without the magic it performs by separating and preserving value in the face of disaster and loss. Air travel, sea travel, and home owners who live in abhorrent-weather conditions all rely on insurance to maintain the economic value of their property when disaster strikes. Insurance not only provides the security of economic recovery but also encouragement to explore, expand, and innovate. It can drive positive social change around the world. By helping communities recover and rebuild after disasters, the industry kick-starts new economic growth that would not otherwise be possible, along with entrepreneurship and wide-open opportunities . From another perspective, isn’t the reason we experience catastrophic impacts in countries like Haiti so differently, in almost exclusively Your Future 2018

humanitarian terms, exactly because, with low insurance penetration, the loss there is almost total? One of the global goals of the insurance industry is to increase insurance penetration or the number of policyholders in places with traditionally low insurance coverage, i.e., the developing world. In this way, good business coincides perfectly with the social good. Its workplaces are becoming more diverse and inclusive Insurance may have a reputation for being traditional and conservative, but that’s changing fast. Today’s companies have recognised the need for diverse young talent from a range of backgrounds. Now the industry is challenging itself to focus on inclusivity, teamwork, and fresh ways of doing things. The Bermuda insurance industry is a leading participant in the Global Dive In Festival for Diversity and Inclusion in Insurance. This Bermuda festival has tackled race, LGBT, multigeneration, and other topics in creative and honest ways and is open to any interested person.

Today’s local workforce of international insurers is mostly Bermudian – which is more than twothirds in surveys conducted by the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR). Nearly every member of ABIR offers multiple internships or places recent graduates in training programs. These are good early-career opportunities, which are available every year. GET INTO SPORTS A career in sports is where you can use boundless energy and creativity and where every day is different here really is no career quite like sports. You may have dreamt of sinking the winning putt at the Masters or taking gold in the Olympic 100 metres – and perhaps you’ve asked yourself, “Why not me?” But if realistically you cannot make it to the professional ranks as a sports person, you can still stay in the field that you love. After all, someone has to coach that world-class athlete, provide his or her nutrition plan and keep the athlete fit. Or you could write about his or her winning achievements as a sports journalist. The range of careers in sports is endless. And there’s no better time to get into sports. Although it remains a competitive field, there is a growing trend toward health, and with it the opportunities and prospects in sports are expanding. We sought out five Bermudians who are at the top of their game to provide tips and helpful advice on how you, too, can make a successful career in sports.

Daniel Johnson Assistant Product and Development Manager of Sports, BTA Convincing people to come to Bermuda is something Daniel Johnson has always enjoyed; the fact that he’s bringing them here to play sports is even better. Daniel is the assistant product and development manager of sports for the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA), a role that sees him attracting overseas sporting organisations to Bermuda for training camps and other events and competitions. “I’ve always been a ‘Bermuda boy,’” he explains. “I love to talk about Bermuda when I travel and get people here to show my island off. I did an internship with Department of Tourism in 2007 and I told myself, this is where I want to be once I graduate from university.” Recent examples of teams that have 34

come to Bermuda through the BTA’s sports marketing initiative include the New York Cosmos Soccer Team, the Danish National Swim Team, and the University of Western Ontario Track and Field Team. “The most important skill to have with my current position is being genuine,” Daniel says. “It’s important because most coaches or sports companies I speak to are attracted to my personality and passion about Bermuda and sports. It is equally important to be knowledgeable about the product (Bermuda) and the sports. You have to know key specifics when

you communicate with them because they want to know dimensions, seating capacities, lengths, widths – and the list goes on. It’s a turn-key operation if you are equipped with those tools when selling Bermuda.” Daniel, a graduate of Berkeley Institute and Niagara University, where he earned a bachelor’s of science in destination management, says sport has always been an important part of his life. He played everything from football and cricket to badminton and volleyball in school, and today he plays goalkeeper for the BAA football club. “I enjoy being around my Your Future 2018

SPORTS teammates and the atmosphere of a team” he says. “Also, I love to compete.” Bermuda is lucky to have Daniel on its side.

Don Vickers Assistant Technical Director, Bermuda Football Association Most young footballers watching the World Cup dream of being on the field one day, but Don Vickers envisioned himself walking the sideline. “I remember watching Brazil play at the 1994 World Cup, and I was fascinated by the way they played the game,” he recalls. “From there I knew I wanted to coach.” In the meantime, playing football helped Don earn a partial scholarship to Worcester State University. He subsequently earned a bachelor’s in marketing from Montclair State University and a master’s in social work from West Chester University. One of Don’s first projects after university was initiating the Paget Titans football programme, an afterschool activity for children in the Ord Road area of Paget. Today, Don holds a part-time position as the assistant technical director for the Bermuda Football Association (BFA). This role sees him evaluate and enhance the development of young footballers across the Island. Most recently that role has seen him involved in reigniting youth football for girls in Bermuda. “Last fall, in conjunction with the existing girls football teams, we ran an outreach programme to attract more girls into the game,” he says. “It’s coming along brilliantly. We held a series of open training sessions that attracted close to 200 players, and we’ve now expanded the league to include teams in four different age groups.” Don says the growth in girls’ football is actually an opportunity improve football across the board in Bermuda. “This process has been a great example of people working together toward a common goal: girls’ football,” he says. “If we do it right, it will have a positive influence on all forms of the game.” Your Future 2018

Collaborating with various organisations has allowed Don to use a skill that he feels is particularly valuable: the ability to listen. “I’ve been very conscious of not trying to control the process,” he says. “It’s about being humble enough to listen to other people’s point of view and realising that we are empowered when we work together.” These skills also come in handy for his full-time job as an educational therapist at Elliot Primary, where Don helps students with behavioral challenges to navigate school and maximise their learning potential. “I get a lot of fulfillment from helping people to develop,” he says. “That doesn’t necessarily mean winning more, it’s about learning and getting better.”

Panzy Olander Personal Trainer, Alchemy Fitness Studio Panzy Olander may have always been on a path to becoming a personal trainer, she just didn’t know it. “I actually stumbled into this career after taking a gap year,” she recalls. “My mother was a personal trainer and gym owner when she was younger. We were talking about what I was going to do for my future, and she simply asked, ‘Why don’t you become a personal trainer, like me?’ “That day I started researching, got in contact with a gym and started work shadowing and studying.” At the time, Panzy was “training hard” for a Muay Thai kickboxing match, so she was in the gym and the dojo all the time anyway. “I have never been the kind of person to sit still for very long; I always need something to do, so an office job was not an option,” she says. In school, Panzy took part in cross country, track and field, and netball. More recently, she has taken to Cross Fit training and competitions. “I think I caught the Cross Fit bug when I was introduced to weight lifting,” she explains. “It is very technical and requires and certain amount of discipline.” Today, Panzy, who earned a foundation diploma in art and design from Arts University Bournemouth, is an International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) certified personal trainer and working at Alchemy Fitness Studio. She says, despite the focus on fitness, the interpersonal side of her job is really important. “Being patient is probably the most important skill you need to have in this position,” she says. “I have found that 36

my job is 50 percent emotions and 50 percent physical ability. The personal in personal trainer is certainly true. But it is one of my favourite parts of my job.” The fitness industry is constantly evolving, so continuing her education is critical to Panzy’s career. She recently attained her Level 1 spinning certification and is constantly reading online training journals, watching blogs, and working one-on-one with other more qualified or experienced trainers. “I find it is extremely important to be open minded and ready to learn something new,” she says. “I hope to be able to grow my skills by taking a few more qualifications, traveling and working abroad before potentially creating my own business here in Bermuda.”

Rajae Woods Director, Visionary Sailing Academy For Rajae Woods, a career in sailing is as much a mission as it is a passion.

Throughout his school years he played all sports but says it was a summer sailing camp; at the age of nine, that really captured his imagination. “I started sailing at Sandy’s Boat Club,” he recalls. “The founder of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation saw potential in me and from there my racing career took off.” Rajae has competed in multiple sailing fleets and traveled to regattas around the world, including Florida, Texas, Ecuador, Canada, Spain, and Great Britain, with one of the highlights being the ISAF Volvo Youth Worlds in the Laser Class. His sailing career has also seen him involved with the Spirit of Bermuda, on training expeditions, and sailing from the US to Bermuda on board the replica ship Amistad. “I enjoy the feeling of freedom out on the water while at the same time trying to master a sailboat against Mother Nature’s elements,” he says. Today Rajae, who graduated from Cedarbridge Academy and received a certificate in leadership/management from the Bermuda College, is the director of the Visionary Sailing Academy, a sailing school that he started last summer and runs out of the West End Sailboat Club. He holds a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) dinghy and senior instructor certificate with specialty endorsements for racing, keelboats, and multihull hulls. “At the Visionary Sailing Academy, our primary goal is to offer quality sailing at an affordable cost to anyone who wants to take the challenge. And to produce future Olympians and international sailors.” Rajae says sailing requires both commitment and a wide range of skills that are useful in developing young people both on and off the water. “I enjoy the coaching aspect and working with school-age children,” he says. “I have developed a really good ability to motivate others to push past their limits and to see their potential. Without the push, some children will never try to excel and will accept the average.” In the future, Rajae says he hopes to Your Future 2018

She later earned a master’s degree Your Future 2018

Soccer Division 2 National Championship. “Sports have a way of teaching you life lessons that you may not experience in your everyday life,” she says. “In sports, you push yourself to limits that you didn’t even know were possible, and the camaraderie with your teammates create priceless moments in life.” As a teacher, Stacey says she has learned the value of earning the trust of her students and colleagues. “In these times, it is imperative that you are able to relate to your students. Most times, they need someone they can trust and who will be honest with them about what they will face in life and how to deal with the obstacles they will encounter,” she says. She also understands that the teachers, themselves, must never stop learning. “My long-term goals are to improve as a teacher by being more innovative and creative with my teaching style. VOLUNTEERING

The modern Royal Bermuda Regiment honours its 50-plus year history – but the Island’s only armed service isn’t resting on its laurels he RBR is gearing up for the future to make sure it still offers a rewarding and life-enhancing experience for volunteers – as well as a comprehensive insurance policy for Bermuda and the capability to deploy on mercy missions overseas. The end of conscription three years ago meant the regiment now relies on a volunteer-only force. But with top-notch training available – much of which is transferrable to civilian life – and high retention rates after soldiers complete their threeyear initial engagement, Regiment Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel David Curley says the service aimed to go from strength to strength. Col. Curley says, “It’s clear that many of those who volunteer to serve vote with their feet and choose to stay on. “And it’s not hard to see why – we offer adventure, overseas travel and good rates of pay. “The environment at Warwick Camp also fosters the development of life skills such as endurance, adaptability, discipline and self-confidence and these attributes are valued by civilian employers, too,” he goes on. “In addition, we give Bermuda’s young men and women the chance to make a difference, whether it’s security work at major events like the America’s Cup or hurricane recovery at home or overseas.”

T

Col. Curley says that mercy missions – like last summer’s deployment to hurricane-devastated Turks and Caicos – strengthened Bermuda’s international image as a strong, stable jurisdiction and a good neighbour. “It’s hard to put a value on that,” he says, “but we are proud that we are seen as good ambassadors for the country in the Caribbean and further afield, and the goodwill that generates is priceless.” Lance Corporal Lee Ann Medeiros, who served as part of the hurricane relief detachment to the Turks and Caicos, says, “You really do get once-in-a-lifetime experiences and very rewarding ones. “People were very glad to see us in Turks and Caicos and very sad to see us leave.” She adds, “Some people do have that stereotype about people shouting at you all the time, which is the wrong mindset. “The regiment is a modern, forward-thinking employer. Our soldiers are

there because they want to be there.” Corporal Neville Vanderpool, 28, a member of the RBR diving team, says that last year he completed his dive-master training through the RBR and has also completed a police diving course. He says, “There are incredible opportunities available as well as the possibilities for career advancement and the money is good.” Col. Curley says that the RBR’s long-term plan was to give soldiers more opportunities in engineering as well as in their traditional role of light infantry. The change in focus means volunteers could learn to operate heavy equipment like bulldozers, excavators, and generators as part of the RBR experience. The Regiment’s Boat Troop is also scheduled to expand, with more full-time roles as it prepares to take over maritime security from the Bermuda Police Service. Other specialist roles

available include motor transport, logistics, catering, communications, and medic training, with the chance to advance to command positions as well. Col. Curley says, “We pride ourselves on giving recruits the chance to boost their academic and trades qualifications.” He adds the RBR paid for a dozen soldiers who signed up late last year to earn the high school diploma equivalent GED. And Col. Curley says closer links with Bermuda College were being considered with the possibility of free or discounted courses for serving soldiers. Col. Curley continues, “It’s never been a better time to join the RBR, and we’d encourage anyone interested in joining us to get in touch.” Soldiers commit to a twoweek camp and 40 drills a year from January until the end of May. Drill nights then resume in September and run until November. There are usually four weekend camps throughout the year – two in the spring and two in the fall. A regiment career offers recruits opportunities to travel, acquire skills useful in civilian life, test oneself to the limits, and earn competitive rates of pay as well as a $500 bounty for new volunteers. Building life skills through adventure aleigh Bermuda is a free personal development programme providing Bermudians aged 17 to 25 with the opportunity to change their lives. Using overseas expeditions, local training and continued coaching, Raleigh challenges young people to harness their full potential and develop skills for life. Jawonday Smith, who adventured with Raleigh Bermuda in 2012 and 2017, tells his story. “After three camps to prepare us with survival skills, team-building skills, and a sense of direction with our personal development, I was off to Costa Rica and Nicaragua for my first expedition in 2012. In Nicaragua, I participated in a grueling 350km trek through mountainous terrain, which tested my mental fortitude. Then I moved on to my community phase – living inside of the home of a local family and working on a water-gravity feed system project. I was also immersed in the culture and work that the villagers do daily. My final phase

R

Your Future 2018

was an environmental phase during which I helped clear trails to allow park rangers and tourists to access deeper parts of the jungle, and I also worked on a turtle hatchery project. “In 2014, I returned to the Raleigh Bermuda family and became a volunteer manager, helping to prepare that year’s venturers for their expedition overseas. I enjoyed working with Raleigh so much that I signed up for my second expedition to Malaysia Borneo last year. The expedition began with an environmental phase focused on building the first eco-toilet in the Tropical Rainforest Conservation Research Center (TRCRC), planting fruitbearing trees to hopefully reintroduce

animals that left the area and also learning about the history of our worksite and the environmental impacts that Borneo felt. The second phase was an 80km trek through the Malaysian jungle. The final phase was a community project to complete three toilets and to complete the building of two dams for another water-gravity feed system, which provided an entire village with running water. “In 2018, I will have been a part of Raleigh Bermuda for six years. This charity isn’t just an ‘in and out’ – it’s a journey. To the young person reading this, don’t be afraid to take a step into the unknown. You shape your own future, and for those of you who want to see a change in the world, you can be that change. You just have to get out there and really find out what you’re made of – with Raleigh.” Contact Tina Nash at 333-5678, info@raleigh.bm or find Raleigh Bermuda on Facebook and Twitter.

JOB SEARCH

Cover letter: What should it say? enerally, you should attach a cover letter to your résumé. Or, if you are applying for a job by email, you’ll want to write a short message with your CV. Here is a guide on how to write or email that cover letter. Never address a letter or email “To whom it may concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam.” If you don’t know the name of the person who will be reading your letter, call the firm and ask for the hiring manager’s name. Don’t assume the recipient knows why you are writing. Start by specifying the position you are applying for and how you heard about the opportunity. Then explain why you are interested in the job and joining this firm. Do some research. There is a good chance that

G

someone in your family or group of friends will know something about the company you are writing to, so ask. Then link your interest with the company. It may have a product or service that you or someone you know have used or enjoyed in the past. Perhaps it is a new company, and you want to grow with it. On the other hand, if the company has been around for many years, and you are looking for stability, then mention that. Find

common ground, something to connect you with the company. Next, sell your self. Explain what you can bring to the position. Highlight your strengths, experience, and skills and how these will benefit the company. Demonstrate how you can help move the company forward and help it to achieve any goals you believe it may have. The final paragraph should include a “thank you” to the reader for considering your application and a request for an interview. Tell the reader how much you are looking forward to meeting the team, and that you’ll be in contact with them in a week if you don’t hear back. Before you send, double-check your letter for grammar and spelling.

Video interviews: How to prepare ideo interviewing is being used more and more by employers. It’s especially useful for Bermudian firms that want to interview students who are studying overseas or for Bermudians who may be applying for post-graduate courses or other training overseas. Some employers also use it to screen applicants before deciding whom to invite for a faceto-face interview. Here are some tips to help you make a success of your video interview. If the video interview is going to be taking place over Skype or a similar messaging application, remember that your interviewer will see your user name, so make sure you choose something professional. Choose a professionallooking location for the interview — not your bedroom. Check the

V

40

background behind you, where your computer’s camera is pointing, to ensure there is nothing inappropriate or distracting in the shot. Check the lighting in your chosen location. You don’t want it to be too harsh on your face but not so dark so that you can’t be seen clearly. Choose to face a window if possible and not have light from a window shining in behind you.

Your computer’s camera should be at eye level so that you are looking straight into the lens. It won’t make a good impression if you are looking down or looking up when speaking. Make sure you are in a quiet place and that no one will disturb you. It will be distracting for both you and the interviewer if loud noises or other people interrupt the interview. Turn

off your cell phone of course. You know that occasionally technology isn’t always perfect, so ensure you are in a location with a reliable Internet connection. Test all the connections well in advance of the time of the interview. Dress appropriately, as if you were attending the firm’s office for a face-toface interview. If the company asks you to send it a pre-recorded video where you talk about yourself, ask a friend to act as the interviewer; he or she can also provide valuable feedback on what to say and how to say it. Last, practice. Set up a “mock” video interview, ideally with a mentor or experienced businessperson. You’ll be better prepared and be able to handle the real video interview with greater confidence. Entrepreneurship Is a Key to Success Jamillah Lodge, BEDC’s information, education, and communications officer, says that, instead of working for someone else, you can consider starting your own business doing what you are passionate about. ntrepreneurship by definition is the capacity and willingness to develop, organise, and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit (businessdictionary.com). This definition does not specify what type of business you can start, which means that, as you navigate the college experience, you also have time to figure out what your passion is and if you can take a chance at being your own boss. In short,

E

entrepreneurship is about possibilities. Who’s to say that, if you are interested in accounting, you can’t start your own accounting firm? Or what if law gets you excited, and you want open your own law firm? Major influencers such as Mark Zuckerburg, founder of Facebook, Oprah Winfrey, and Chancellor Bennett (a.k.a. Chance the Rapper) are entrepreneurs. Why not follow in their footsteps? Many colleges and universities have entrepreneurship

curriculums, and some even have incubators or accelerators, i.e., organisations that are designed to create and grow young businesses by providing them with necessary support, financial, and technical services. When you have graduated and are firmly set on taking over the world, keep in mind that there are organisations such as the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation that can help you navigate starting your own business in Bermuda. The BEDC offers free guidance and can provide financial support to help entrepreneurs start up and manage their businesses. For more information, check out the website at www.bedc.bm.

NETWORKING

Why you should use LinkedIn It may not be as cool as Instagram or Snapchat, but LinkedIn is vital for young professionals inkedIn has more than 500 million members across the globe, and its fastest-growing demographic groups are students and recent college graduates, which amount to 40 million users. According to Fortune magazine, more than 10 million jobs are advertised on LinkedIn on a daily basis. Many companies use LinkedIn’s information database to seek out people with the skill sets and experience that business needs. The social media site has a “Jobs” section that is searchable by company name, location, keyword, and job title. Also, many employment sites, like Indeed.com, allow job seekers to use their LinkedIn profile as a résumé, thus making the process much faster with one click of a button. To do that, it is critical to put as much time and effort into your profile as you would a CV to ensure there are no typos or glaring gaps in work experience. Also make sure your profile is public as the object is for employers and recruitment agencies to find you. One item that is often neglected but may tip the balance of a job in your favour is the “Causes” section. Employers may feel an added bond with you if, for example, they see you are concerned about animal welfare, which may be an issue that is near and dear to their heart as well. Your profile photo should be of a professional nature — in other words, don’t uploaded a picture of yourself in a Hallowe’en Batman costume. Along with this route, it is advisable that you seek out people to give you recommendations and post them on your profile. These recommendations can be college professors, if you are a recent graduate, or former work

L

Your Future 2018

colleagues and supervisors. It is also beneficial to ask people to recommend your skills you have listed in your profile, so potential employers can see you are an expert in various areas. You can choose the skills you want to receive recommendations. Setting up an email alert for jobs you may be interested in is another vital function that is available through the “Using the Jobs You May Be Interested

In” feature. If there are specific companies you would like to work for, it never hurts to follow them and stay informed as to what that business is doing. That may not help in getting your application noticed, but for interviews, you can use your fount of knowledge about the firm to help impress the person speaking with you about the position to give you an advantage.

THE NICHOLL SCHOLARSHIPS The Scholarships are awarded in honour of the late Albert E. Nicholl who was interested in the education of young Bermudians and gave much of his time and talent to education in Bermuda, particularly to Dellwood School. The funds for these scholarships were provided by the deceased in his Will for the higher education of young Bermudians at accredited universities in the British Commonwealth and the United States of America. Scholarships will be awarded in 2018 for either undergraduate or postgraduate study at a per annum value of $25,000 for the length of the course up to a maximum of 4 years (reviewed annually for performance). Applicants must demonstrate superior academics, strong character and leadership skills, community service and extra-curricular activities and skills at a high level including but not limited to sports, music, dance and art.

Humber College The workload and timelines to earn a bachelor’s of interior design at Humber College in Toronto are quite intense, but Erin Fleming finds the work satisfying and relevant to her future career plans. While still a student at Cedarbridge Academy, Erin determined that the community feel and practical nature of Humber’s Interior Design program was well-suited to her style of learning when compared with the more theoryfocused programs she was researching elsewhere. She first became interested in the field of interior design when her mom built a house when Erin was young; she was fascinated by the planning and the process. Based on personal experiences, she is focusing on a future design career related to medical spaces. Erin recognises the impact that the environment has on healing and emotional well-being and wants to create places that feel less sterile and comfortable. A favourite school project this year was planning a dental office, as it provides a direct link to her future plans.
