Cedar trees were used as Christmas trees. (It was often

A spice leaf was put into hot cocoa. A sixpence or thrupence was put in Christmas pudding for good luck.

You always bought a case of mineral at Christmas. Mineral bottle caps were used to play jacks, as well as to decorate gombey costumes. Everyone grew their own cassava which they had to peel, grate and soak. (It dates back to before 1612 when the first settlers from England grew the cassava root for flour.)

Graphic Novel Roundup I By Keith Caesar
t’s the most wonderful part of the season. At least it is for me, especially when we get new Graphic novels on our shelves. For those who have never tried them. You will be blown away. Not because then are more “sophisticated” comic books. But simply because they present some of the best most outrageous stories you will ever read. We’ve just added a few to our collection. Clearly if you have not heard about the phenomenon that is The Walking Dead. Then you must be from another planet. For the past three years it has been one the highest rated shows on television. So much so that this seasons winter finale was one of the highest rated episodes on all of basic cable. With 15.2 million viewers. What does that mean? A lot of people were watching. The show returns in February, and while it is a different take on the graphic novels. The characters journeys are still very much the same. We’ve just added books 15 and 16 to our collection. If you read past issues you may know of my fondness for The Boys. Especially for Garth

If you stick around and focus in you learn that there is a lesson in the stories. I won’t go into detail you can check out site for past issues but we’ve just added books 8,9, and 10 to our collection. Stephen Kings’s famed The darktower series has also spawned a successful series that in turn have lead to rumors of a film that is in turnaround. I’d describe it as being a medieval story mixed in western motifs with a lot of other stuff going on. Finally we have the fifth edition of the Locke and Key series. I have not gotten into this particular series. It’s created by writer Joe Hill, who is the son of Stephen King. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the series. From the fan base around the library. It is getting more awesome as it continues. So when making your New Year’s resolution consider this. There is a new category of reading you’re missing out on. If you want something new, something outside the box. Take a chance on a graphic novel series. It may bring out the curiosity in you.

Dubbed The Black Christmas, Kwanzaa for many
is a
celebration less about giving gifts and more about the spirit of fostering better relationships with each other
and our communities.
We asked Nicole Stovell, a
frequent library patron if she could share some of her experiences with the holiday.
BNL: How’d you get involved with Kwanzaa? NS: I started celebrating Kwanzaa about 7-8 years ago. I had relinquished many of the traditions I was raised with and was beginning to embrace new celebrations that actually spoke to the person I’d become. I did some research and Kwanzaa was one of those that spoke to me. I absolutely LOVE it!
BNL: Tell us a little bit about the history of Kwanzaa? NS: Kwanzaa was started by Maulana Karenga during the Black Power
Movement. In short his goal was to provide Black people with a tradition that focused on the best of our story. Kwanzaa does exactly that! For more information head to www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org.
NS: The candles represent the Nguzo Saba (7 Principles). Umoja - Unity Kujichagulia - Self-Determination Ujima - Collective Work & Responsibility Ujamaa - Cooperative Economics Nia - Purpose Kuumba - Creativity Imani - Faith
BNL: What’s the lessons that can be learned for this brand/kind of holiday?
NS: There are many lessons to be learned from Kwanzaa. At its very core
BNL: How long have you been celebrating the holiday?
is a focus on truly loving ourselves (as Black people). As simple as this may sound most of us still don’t. That’s a fact the world over. We still have lots of work to do when it comes to fully accepting/loving ourselves!
NS: 7-8 years

Roasted Squash and Sweet Potato soup with Buttermilk – Blue Cheese swirl
In Debbie Macomber’s latest Angelic Intervention series, angels Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy have a new assignment: to tend to apprentice angel Will. On New Year’s Eve, Will spots two lonely souls in New York’s Times Square and shoves them together. But though they are just right for each other (she’s a chef, he’s a food critic), they are separated in the crowd, and the four angels decide to work a miracle the following holiday season by reuniting them.

Preheat the oven to 400F. Put the chopped onion, chopped butternut and sweet potato onto a cookie sheet.
and pour into the pan. You have now added 1 ½ quarts of liquid to the vegetables.
Drizzle the olive oil over them and sprinkle with the cinnamon and nutmeg, then roast in the oven for about 1 – 1 ¼ hours, by which time all should be tender. Remove from the oven.
On reheating to serve, add the marsala, and taste for seasoning. You may need to add up to another 2 cups of water if the soup’s too thick for your liking.
While the vegetables are still warm or at room temperature, liquidize them in a blender in 2 batches, adding 2 cups of vegetable broth to each batch.
As the soup warms up, liquidize the blue cheese and buttermilk in a clean blender and spoon into a jug or bowl.
Pour the blended vegetables into a saucepan. Swish another 2 cups of vegetable broth in the blender to get out all the remnants of the soup,
On serving, drizzle some of this mixture over each bowl. Leave the jug on the table for your guests to add more if they wish. DECEMBER/JANUARY
