The Bermuda Sports Journal was established in part because many of the sporting organizations have not kept records of the achievements of their athletes whether it be in photographs, documented history, or statistics. As people grow older, memories fade and is forgotten, therefore, unrecorded information frequently become fables. The goal of the Bermuda Sports Journal is to interview people and document their stories to ensure preservation of all their stories. We aim to be as accurate as possible, whilst relying on people’s honesty and their re-collection of events, including correct dates and times, therefore, some information may be inaccurate.

Every governing body, association, and club, needs a president or leader with the will and ability to maintain and or advance the group’s current goals and objectives. Sometimes it is necessary for a leader to devise a new plan or direction. What is of utmost importance is that the focus is always on the betterment of the group, not the individual or personal interest. In the sports arena, leadership comes in many forms; presidents oversee the hold program of the group, under their leadership are coaches, team captains and assistants that with their knowledge, contribute to the progress of the group. Collectively, each one plays a key role in helping to bring the overall vision to reality. Each leader, regardless of their level of responsibility, must have a strategy, with psychological know-how and methods to redirect the strategy if the plan selected is not working.
One of my favorite quotes on leadership comes from H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I; “The art of leadership is in the ability to make people want to work for you, while they are really under no obligation to do so.” A good leader always inspires those who follow to greater achievements and opportunities.
Leadership is not about self-gratification, perks, and privileges, it is not about the position as leader. It is always about the betterment of the hold group and its achievements. A leader will kindle interest, teach, aid, and correct. Those whom he or she leads must work together for the good of the group. They must encourage each member to work together to reach the goals that render the group a success.
The beauty of good leadership is its ability to inspire and encourage others, especially the youth with skills; socially, vocationally, and academically that will improve their life in the communities and society at large.
As we strive to build better communities, we must look at what we can contribute, not what we can take. Leadership is more about the contribution of the whole, not the accolades of the leader, Sam Walton once said; “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.”

Benefits of exercise
Exercise has many benefits. Shedding a few pounds may be the one of the reasons you decide to start a new workout routine, but there are many physical and mental benefits that have very little to do with the numbers on your scale.
Knowledge is power and the more you know about the advantages of exercise, the more physical activity you’re likely to get.
So, next time you tie up your sneakers, forget about your calorie burn and focus on some of the reasons below
Improves Memory
Want to improve your memory? Start moving. Studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise such as walking, running or cycling boost the size of your hippocampus, the area of your brain responsible for verbal memory and learning. Working out for even a short ten
minute period of mild exertion can enhance cognitive benefits
Reduces Pain
If you have lower back pain or other conditions that cause chronic pain, exercising has been shown to help reduce the severity of pain, as well as improve physical function.
Confidence Boost
Completing a tough workout, especially when you’d much rather stay at home, can really boost your confidence. Sticking to your plan, especially when it requires some flexibility, like working out alone if your partner cancels. Nothing beats that post-workout high: You came, you saw, you conquered. Accomplishing a workout is definitely a reason to ‘pat’ yourself on the back Be proud!
Bermuda Sports Journal | 2023 18
Gives you a chance to wear something fun
Workout clothes can be loads of fun. You can pick bright colors, fun patterns, and comfortable fabric. You probably own lots of sportswear just waiting in a drawer. Take inventory of what you have and see how many new outfit possibilities you can come up with. Challenge yourself to mix colors and patterns. Push the black pants to the back and reach for some color.
Happy Feelings
Say yes to Endorphins. The link between happiness and exercise has been well studied and the results are very positive. Working out not only releases endorphins, but it can also help refocus your energy away from life’s stressful situations. One study found that just 20 minutes of exercise can boost your mood from between 8-12 hours. At least 30-60 minutes of cardio and strength training three to five days per week is optimal for mood benefits.
Show your body Love
Exercise helps you show your body love. Now that your focus is not just on weight-loss, you can truly exercise and realize that you are just being kind to your body and showing it love and respect. You only have one body, and your body does a lot for you! Why not treat our bodies the best way possible?

trauma-informed care approach, is revolutionizing the way athletes approach their craft. Through his visionary leadership and compassionate guidance, he is shaping a new generation of athletes who understand that true success lies not only in physical prowess, but in the strength of the mind.
Can you describe/share more about the term “Performance Mindset”?
Performance mindset training is a type of mental training that helps athletes develop the right mindset to perform at their best. It involves learning and practicing a set of mental skills that can help athletes improve the biological, psychological, and social skills needed to achieve peak performance. By learning and practicing these skills like energy management, environmental control, self-talk, and visualization, athletes can develop a performance mindset that helps them perform at their best, even under pressure. This can be especially helpful in high-pressure situations like competitions, where athletes need to be able to stay calm, focused, and confident in order to perform at their best. The performance mindset is all about being proactive with utilization of mental skills and coaching. Too often, athletes are taught to utilize skills when times are tough, but our approach encourages athletes to practice their mental skills away from the challenges. Similar to physical skills training, athletes want to be practicing before it is gametime. Our performance mindset training teaches athletes how to turn mental skills into habits, so when times get tough, skills ae applied automatically. Why do you think it’s important that an athlete has a performance mindset component as part of their training regime?
Athletes are human beings with biological, psychological, and social barriers to performance that cannot be addressed simply through training harder physically. Every athlete has a nervous system that is wired to react intensely to challenges and threats. Athletes can have talent, a strong work ethic, and a strong coach, but all of it can be thrown away in an instance if an athlete has ignored mental training. Some of the top performers in the world have had to retire because they focused solely on physical training, and ignored mental skills training. As their perceived failures increased, so did their need to “fix” their mental state. However, at this time, it is often too late for individuals to get back to their peak form. Many of these stories could have be prevented if mental skills coaching was incorporated into their training throughout their lives. Again, our approach promotes a proactive and preventative style that teaches athletes that mental skills are not for “fixing” things, but rather, are needed skills to help them maintain consistent peak performance.
What are some of the barriers or resistance you see to incorporating performance mindset training into an athlete’s plan?
Lack of awareness of the benefits: Many athletes may not be aware of the benefits of mental skills training or may not realize that it is an important part of overall performance training.
Stigma: There may be a stigma or misconception that seeking mental training is a sign of weakness or a lack of mental toughness. Many feel that mental skills coaching is therapy rather than an added piece of training.
Over-emphasis on physical training: Many athletes prioritize physical training over mental training, believing that physical skills are more important for performance. Unfortunately, talent and a strong work ethic can crumble if an athlete does not know how to maintain a performance mindset in the face of adversity. Can you share one of your favorite success stories with us?
I had an 8-year-old baseball player with immense talent, but a very dysregulated nervous system. The individual would have panic attacks while on the pitcher’s mound and could not understand why pitching caused him to react in such a strong way. After teaching the athlete energy management skills to control his nerves, he began to notice what was going on in his head as he walked to the mound each inning. He realized how negative his thoughts were before each inning, which contributed to his body’s reactions. The athlete was taught a visualization skills to increase his concentration and confidence. The athletes father reached out after the athlete’s next game and reported that the player threw a no-hitter! The father also said that he could see the athlete breathing, and the athlete told him how much the visualization skills helped. The father described his son as a “whole new player.” It was great for the player to see the reward immediately after applying the mental skills in-game.
If you could recommend one book/podcast for an athlete who believes in developing their performance mindset, what would it be?
Please stay tuned to our content through our social media or our My360Mindset podcast on Spotify for young athletes! The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD is a good one for parents and coaches to understand the connection between the nervous system, mindset, and behavior.

Prior to 1976, women were not allowed to run more than 5 miles in Bermuda and in that year, Merenette Bean became the first woman to run and win the female class in the May 24th Derby. A 23-year-old, Edwina Arorash, motivated by Merernette’s accomplishment wanted to see if she could do it as well and in 1979, she ran her first 13.1-mile Derby, or half-marathon.
Edwina’s love for running has become a journey, a commitment to training had become a personal challenge, turning a hobby into a lifestyle. This year, at age 66, marks 40 years since she started running and she had progressed to running marathons locally and overseas, competed twice in the New York, Chicago, and Washington Marathons. She has also competed in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Paris, and Madrid.
In 1979 Edwina joined the Swan’s Running Club, and this race was an opportunity for the club to honor her 40 years of dedication to running and her commitment to the club. Proceeds from the event were presented to St. John’s Ambulance Brigade for their development and community service.
More than 150 runners and walkers came out for the Swan’s Charity event to honor Edwina Arorash’s four decades of running.

The Hannover Re Half Marathon starts on the Tucker Property (the big field opposite the South Entrance to the Botanical Gardens) and heads east along South Shore Road to Paynter’s Road before heading west on Harrington Sound Road to Devil’s Hole Hill. From Devil’s Hole Hill the course rejoints South Shore Road heading west and back to Tucker’s Property to the finish line.
It is the second-oldest half marathon (13.1-mile road race) in Bermuda, having been first staged in March 1972. The race is sponsored by Hannover Re and all proceeds, sign-up fees and additional donations go to the Bermuda National Athletics Association and Friends of Hospice.

Several American high school runners flew into Bermuda to compete in Bermuda’s National Cross-Country Championships as part of their cross-country Challenge Series. American high-school athletics coach Ted Leblow, who is the head of the cross-country program at Central High School in Grand Junction, Colorado, oversaw a team of 14 runners completing alongside Bermuda’s athletes at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday, December 3, 2022.
Coach LeBlow wanted his athletes to have a unique experience, unlike anything they have ever experienced, so they came to race, the experience of competing in a different country, meeting and interacting with the Bermudian people, is an experience they will never forget.
